    Notes: Abstract A superlattice avalanche photodiode using III–V materials is expected to be used in long-distance fiberoptic communication systems in the 1.3 to 1.55 μm wavelength range. Theoretical studies have been made on the effective ionization rates of electrons and holes of the device, I–V characteristic and the frequency response characteristic of the Al x Ga1−x As/GaAs superlattice p+-i-n+ structure. It is observed that theα/β ratio of the device increases with the field and the bandwidth of the response curve increases with decrease in the dc multiplication gain.

    Notes: Abstract Secondary ion emission from Fe-Cr, Fe-Ni, Cr-Ni binary alloys and Fe-Cr-Ni ternary alloys (concentration range 10–90% of the alloying element) bombarded with 3 keV Xe+ ions has been investigated as a function of concentration of the studied element in the multicomponent system. The linear increase of the secondary ion intensity with concentration of the element in the sample was found only for a low-concentration region. There are pronounced nonlinearities in the medium and high-concentration regions. A possible explanation for such nonlinearities based on chemical and physical matrix effects is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract TheK α x-ray fluorescence (XRF) cross sections have been experimentally determined for elements in the range 42≦Z≦57 at excitation energy of 59.54keV associated with gamma rays of Am-241 radioisotope. In addition, measurements of XRF yields of theK shell (w k) for the same elements at the same excitation energy have also been carried out. Our measurements were shown to agree with theoretical calculations.

    Notes: Abstract Theoretical calculations are presented for the ionization rate of electrons in III–V ternary semiconductor compounds considering alloy scattering and carrier-carrier interaction, in addition to optical phonon scattering and ionization scattering. However, alloy scattering is found to be a weak interaction. Fairly good agreement is obtained for Ga1−x In x As withx=0.14 and 0.53 with the experimental results and for Ga0.5 Al0.5 As with the existing theoretical result which used an indirect method. The alloy scattering potential has been taken in the form of energy band-gap difference. The calculations can be used for any ternary semi-conductor.

    Notes: Abstract Because of its good depth resolution, the Auger electron depth profile analysis allows to investigate diffusion phenomena in thin films directly. Complicated calibration procedures, however, are needed to correct for the matrix effects inherent in the Auger method, particularly artefacts due to the sputtering process. In this paper, two types of thin-film systems are presented in order to determine diffusion coefficients from depth profiles: double-layer and periodic multi-layer film structures. Compared to the double-layer films, the multi-layer structure has the advantage of less stringent requirements on depth resolution and allows to detect smaller diffusion effects. Finally, it is shown how grain boundary and bulk diffusion data can be extracted separately from the composition profiles.

    Notes: Abstract XRF induced by PIXE (XRF-PIXE) using silver as a primary target was compared with a standard radioisotope XRF system using Cd-109 as a primary exciting source, for the analysis of single-element thin standards. The sensitivity of the two methods were determined for elements from Cl to Mo. XRF is found to be more sensitive for elements from Cl to Mn, whereas XRF-PIXE is found to be more suitable for elements from Fe to Mo. Both techniques can be considered as complementary to each other.

    Notes: Abstract Large signal characterisation of double heterostructure DDR Impatt diode has been carried out in the millimeter-wave range considering the MITATT mode of operation. The structure of the device is p+-p2-p1-n1-n2-n+ where impact ionisation and tunneling takes place in the p1-n1 region. In this study we have considered two well-known heterostructures, e.g., InP/GaInAs/InP and InP/InGaAsP/InP and one nonconventional structure GaAs/InP/GaAs. The theoretical results of the performances of these devices as regards of output power, efficiency, and negative conductance revealed that the structures are quite promising as the source of power in the millimeter-wave range. The analysis may be used for other mm wave DDR heterostructure Impatts.

    Notes: Abstract A calculation has been carried out for the drift velocity of electrons in the highfield region under the condition of impact ionization in III–V semiconductor compounds. The energy-balance equation of the one-electron model has been solved considering alloy scattering and carrier-carrier interaction, in addition to optical phonon and ionization scattering. Fairly good agreement is obtained for GaAs with the available experimental and Monte-Carlo results. Graphs for the high-field drift velocity has also been plotted for Ga1−x InxAs (x = 0.53) at different ratios of ionization mean-free path and optical phonon mean-free path. The plot of high-field drift velocity versus ionization rate reveals that the high-field drift velocity strongly depends on the ionization rate of carriers, and vice versa.

    Notes: Abstract We report on emission processes induced by particle-solid interaction involving ions with a large potential (i.e., high ion charge state) and low kinetic energy. After an introduction into existing neutralization models for ion scattering at a metal surface a detailed discussion on the electron emission processes is presented. The number of electrons emitted per incident ion is shown to be proportional to the potential energy only within a restricted parameter field involving charge state and ion velocity. The kinetic energy distribution of emitted electrons is dominated by low-energetic electrons (≦30 eV), while inner shell holes of the projectile ion can initiate high-energetic characteristic Auger electrons. The presence of inner shell holes is also of importance for the charge state of highly charged ions being scattered at surfaces whereas normally the charge state distribution of scattered ions depends on the impact parameter only. The influence of the primary ion charge state on the sputtering yield of insulating surfaces is seen for the charge state of sputtered particles, whereas the total sputtering yield seems to be insensitive. This question is still subject to controversy, however. Photon emission dependent on the charge state of the impinging ion has been observed up to now only for extremely highly charged ions as hydrogenlike Ar or Kr.

    Notes: We have reformulated the general problem of internal flow in a modern, high speed gas centrifuge with sources and sinks in such a way as to obtain new, simple, rigorous closed form analytical solutions. Both symmetric and antisymmetric drives lead us to an ordinary differential equation in place of the usual inhomogeneous Onsager partial differential equation. Owing to the difficulties of exactly solving this sixth order, inhomogeneous, variable coefficient ordinary differential equation we appeal to the power of perturbation theory and techniques. Two extreme parameter regimes are identified, the so-called semi-long bowl approximation and a new short bowl approximation. Only the former class of problems is treated here. The long bowl solution for axial drive is the correct leading order term, just as for pure thermal drive. New O(1) results are derived for radial, drag and heat drives in two dimensions. Then regular asymptotic, even ordered power series expansions for the flow field are carried out on the computer to O(ε4) using MACSYMA. These approximations are valid for values of ε near unity. In the spirit of Van Dyke, one can carry out this expansion process, in theory, to apparently arbitrary order for arbitrary but finite decay length ratio. Curiously, the flows induced by axial and radial forces are proportional for asymptotically large source scale heights, x*. Corresponding isotope separation integral parameters will be given in a companion paper.

    Notes: Turbulence is essentially four-dimensional in character, and requires the corresponding treatment of the well-known Navier-Stokes equations. However, this has only been possible over the past twenty years and then by using the largest computers available. Interest is now turning from the initial, mainly smooth channel, simulations to geometries of eventual engineering significance. This paper reports a new code using the spectral methods of Orszag, but also incorporating a novel generalized co-ordinate transformation approach.Initial predictions for smooth channels agree well with published data. For distorted geometries, the initial velocity field has considerable influence on the success of the simulations. This is accommodated by gradual (step) changes towards the required distortion, so that the initial velocity field for the ‘new’ geometry is the final field from the previous step. Examples are given of different two-dimensional channel geometries achieved, and these include the successful prediction of recirculating flows.

    Notes: The problem of three-dimensional laminar natural convection in a vertical enclosure with an inner square rod is treated by a numerical method in boundary-fitted co-ordinates. The inner and outer cylinders are heated and cooled, respectively, to maintain different constant surface temperatures. The horizontal enclosure surfaces are maintained at adiabatic conditions. The Prandtl number is that of air, 0·703, and the Rayleigh numbers span the conduction, transition and boundary layer regimes of flow. The radius ratio is 1, and the aspect ratio (cylinder length divided by maximum annular gap) is 1. The results of the study provide data useful in the design and performance assessment of nuclear reactor spent fuel shipping casks.

    Notes: This paper investigates the application of the centre implicit method for the determination of the pressure transient in a pipeline, and compares the results with those obtained using the method of characteristics and an experimental investigation. The study shows that there are unique values for the stability criterion (ratio of the linear and time increments) and the artificial viscosity term (a damping factor) used in the numerical computation. The time step and the number of nodes required for the accuracy of the method have been considered. The centre implicit method can be readily adapted to transient flow with variable wave speed provided the established conditions are used.

    Notes: Numerical simulation of open water flow in natural courses seems to be doomed to one- or two-dimensional numerical simulations. Investigations of flow hydrodynamics through the application of three-dimensional models actually have very few appearances in the literature. This paper discusses the development and the initial implementation of a general three-dimensional and time-dependent finite volume approach to simulate the hydrodynamics of surface water flow in rivers and lakes. The slightly modified Navier-Stokes equations, together with the continuity and the water depth equations, form the theoretical basis of the model. A body-fitted time-dependent co-ordinate system has been used in the solution process, in order to accommodate the commonly complex and irregular boundary and bathymetry of natural water courses. The proposed adaptive technique allows the mesh to follow the movement of the water boundaries, including the unsteady free-water surface.The primitive variable equations are written in conservative form in the Cartesian co-ordinate system, and the computational procedure is executed in the moveable curvilinear co-ordinate system. Special stabilizing techniques are introduced in order to eliminate the oscillating behaviour associated with the finite volume formulation. Also, a new and comprehensive approximation for the pressure forces at the faces of a control volume is presented. Finally, results of several tests demonstrate the performance of the finite volume approach coupled with the adaptive technique employed in the three-dimensional time-dependent mesh system.

    Notes: This paper presents a numerical solution of the transport equation for heat and species in complex three-dimensional spaces. The solution domain of the equation is transformed into a cube, as also is the governing equation; the resultant equation is solved in the transformed space via a finite difference technique. The validity of the developed computer code is tested by predicting test cases for which either analytical or reliable experimental results exist. Results are also presented for the rate of convergence of the method and the computer storage requirements, from which the validity, the flexibility and the economy of the developed method are proved for flows in real three-dimensional complex terrains.

    Notes: Numerical solutions are often inaccurate because conventional co-ordinate systems do not represent the complex physical boundaries accurately. In the present work, the numerical solution of linear shallow water wave equations has been obtained by transforming the physical domain into a rectangular computational domain using elliptic differential operators. This work is part of a programme to develop three-dimensional body-fit grid systems for environmental flows. Solutions have been obtained for a cylindrical container and also a parabolic container. The initial conditions chosen are the ones for which analytical solutions exist. The numerical solutions compare well with analytical solutions.

    Notes: In a previous work we solved numerically the steady-state motion of an ideal fluid that fills a moving cylindrical container with partitions, and were able to compute the equivalent moments of inertia.Here we extend this work in two steps. First we introduce time dependence and then free surfaces, and are able to compute the transient motion of the fluid not filling the container. The main body of the work has to do with the treatment of free surfaces. Our approach is an extention to three dimensions of the volume of fluid method of Hirt and Nichols. The solution algorithm is outlined, and two examples that demonstrate its capability are presented.

    Notes: A numerical procedure is described for the analysis of vertical deformation of smooth, rigid foundations of arbitrary shape on homogeneous and layered soil media. The contact area at the interface of the foundation and soil medium is approximated by square subdivisions. The response of the system is then obtained from the superposition of the influence of the individual subdivisions. The flexibility influence coefficients are based on equivalent smooth, rigid circular areas with the same contact area as the square subdivisions. For foundations on a homogeneous, isotropic elastic half-space, the flexibility coefficients are given analytically by the integrated forms of the Boussinesq's solution. For a layered soil medium, the flexibility coefficients are determined from an axisymmetric finite element analysis which is essentially two dimensional. Thus, there is no necessity for a full three-dimensional finite element analysis. Comparison with solutions obtained using the integral transform technique for smooth, rigid rectangular foundations on a homogeneous, isotropic elastic half-space shows good agreement. Parametric solutions are presented for the response of rectangular foundations on some ‘typical’ soil profiles. The use of a simplified method to estimate the settlement of rectangular foundations on a layered soil medium by superposing solutions for homogeneous, elastic strata is discussed.

    Notes: The complete solution is presented for the transient effects of pumping fluid from a point sink embedded in a saturated, porous elastic half-space. It is assumed that the medium is homogeneous and isotropic with respect to its elastic properties and homogeneous but anisotropic with respect to the flow of pore fluid. The soil skeleton is modelled as a linear elastic material obeying Hooke's law, while the pore fluid is assumed to be incompressible with its flow governed by Darcy's law. The solution has been evaluated for a particular value of Poisson's ratio of the solid skeleton, i.e. 0.25, and the results have been presented graphically in the form of isochrones of excess pore pressure and surface profile for the half-space. The solutions presented may have application in practical problems such as dewatering operations in compressible soil and rock masses.

    Notes: To facilitate the practical numerical analysis of tunnel structures by means of the finite element method in the case of viscoplastic properties of the rock mass and viscoelastic properties of the shotcrete, this method is coupled to boundary elements. In this way, the unchanged properties of the boundary element region provide enormous savings in computing time. In order to improve the numerical stability of such calculations, a variable time-step analysis was employed for each time step with an iterative correction method. Characteristic values are obtained from measured values by back-analysis.

    Notes: The heat extraction through a geothermal reservoir on an oblique fault plane in the earth's crust is considered. The fault could be modelled mechanically as a frictional contact interface of two elastic bodies. The heat is recovered by circulating fluid through the reservoir, and then the surface of the reservoir is cooled by the fluid. The analysis is based on the two-dimensional theory of quasi-static thermoelasticity. It is concluded from numerical calculations that a geothermal reservoir can be created on an oblique fault plane, and the opened region, i.e. the fluid-filled region, increases gradually with time during the heat extraction. Also discussed are the effects of the fluid pressure and the coefficient of friction on the behaviour of the reservoir.

    Notes: A finite element, variable mesh analysis of unconfined steady-state seepage problems is presented based on a nonlinear programming algorithm. It is shown that the minimization of an objective function which merely represents a measure of the total flux leaving or entering the mesh at the free surface nodes (except those that belong also to pervious boundaries) does not permit a unique definition of the free surface geometry. This problem, which is apparently related to the numerical instabilities often met when using variable mesh approaches, can be eliminated by adding to the objective function a term representing a sort of overall ‘regularity’ condition for the shape of the free surface. The modified solution procedure turns out to be stable and able to provide meaningful results for practical problems even when rather coarse meshes are adopted.

    Notes: Hydraulic and mechanical properties of rock masses are largely dependent upon the distribution and variation of fracture areas. Consequently, it is essential to develop good models for analysing the spatial geometric characteristics of fracture fields. The latter, however, may be ascertained only by measuring open cuts or boreholes. The most important factor from the analysis of areas is to be able to determine spatial networks. Without an exhaustive and expensive inventory, the classical methods involving measurements of dip and strike do not provide either a correct estimation of fracture orientations in space, or a good estimation of their distribution.At present, automatic analysis of linear traces on large plane areas is used by several authors1,2 and the field strike and dip measurements are applied only for verification purposes. This method of computing spatial networks is especially suitable because of the nature of data so obtained, since it permits various simulations on computed networks. It is based upon classical methods of vector geometry that involve a measurements data matrix and provide a means of solving a double system of equations. Results are the directional spatial fracture densities. The object of this paper is to define the geometric parameters of this problem and the computation method, to present an example and, finally, to conclude with critical comments supported by certain proposals for a variety of applications.

    Notes: The constitutive model of sands is proposed to describe the characteristics of plastic behaviour for cyclic loadings. A non-associated flow rule is used and both yield function and plastic potential are generalized forms of the Modified Cam clay model. The hardening parameter is represented by the plastic work related to different portions of volumetric and deviatoric changes. The boundary surface is employed to describe the plastic strain within the yield surface. The directional independency of yield condition in triaxial compression and extension tests is extended to that in general stress states. Several drained and undrained cyclic tests are predicted and the comparison is made with experimental results. The proposed model is capable of representing the monotonic and cyclic behaviours of sands with reasonable accuracy. The simulation is performed for both included and excluded membrane penetration effects and it is suggested that the membrane penetration causes the significant influences on the results of undrained cyclic tests.

    Notes: A review of the literature indicates that the elastic behaviour of granular materials is isotropic and that Poissony's ratio is constant, whereas Young's Modulus, the bulk modulus and the shear modulus vary with the mean normal stress and the deviatoric stress. A nonlinear, isotropic model for the elastic behaviour is developed on the basis of theoretical considerations involving the principle of conservation of energy. Energy is therefore neither generated not dissipated in closed-loop stress paths or in closed-loop strain paths. The framework for the model consists of Hooke's law, in which Poission's ratio is constant and Young's modulus is expressed as a power function invlving the first invariat of the stress tensor and the second invariant of the deviatoric stress tensor. The characteristics of the model are described, and the accuracy is evaluated by comparison with experimental results from triaxial tests and three-dimensional cubical triaxial tests with a variety of stress paths. Parameter determination from unloading-reloading cycles in conventional triaxial compression tests is demonstrated, typical parameter values are given for granular materials and extension of the model to soils with effective cohesion is described.

    Notes: A numerical method of analysis based on elasticity theory is presented for the analysis of axially and laterally loaded pile groups embedded in nonhomogeneous soils. The problem is decomposed into two systems, namely the group piles acted upon by external applied loads and pile-soil interaction forces, and a layered soil continuum acted upon by a system of pile-soil interaction forces at the imaginary positions of the piles. The group piles are discretized into discrete elements while the nonhomogeneous soil behaviour is determined from an economically viable finite element procedure. The load-deformation relationship of the pile group system is then determined by considering the equilibrium of the pile-soil interaction forces, and the compatibility of the pile and soil displacements. The influence of soil nonlinearity can be studied by limiting the soil forces at the pile-soil interface, and redistributing the ‘excess forces’ by an ‘initial stress’ process popular in elasto-plastic finite element analysis. The solutions from this approach are compared with some available published solutions for single piles and pile groups in homogeneous and nonhomogeneous soils. A limited number of field tests on pile groups are studied, and show that, in general, the computed response compares favourably with the field measurements.

    Notes: The upper bound method of limit analysis of perfect plasticity is applied to stability problems of slopes with a general nonlinear failure criterion. Based on the upper bound method, a numerical procedure is suggested, which converts the complex system of differential equations to an initial value problem. Using this numerical procedure, an effective numerical method, called the inverse method, suitable for the solution of slope stability problems in soil mechanics with a general nonlinear failure criterion, is presented. A general nonlinear failure criterion for soils is also suggested, from which the effects of nonlinear failure parameters on the stability of slopes are discussed.

    Notes: A method is presented for obtaining the consolidation behaviour of a layered soil subjected to strip, circular, or rectangular surface loadings, or subjected to fluid withdrawal due to pumping. The solution method involves applying a Fourier or Hankel transform to the field quantities along with a Laplace transformation. The effect of the Fourier or Hankel transform is to reduce a two- or three-dimensional problem or one involving axial symmetry, to one involving only a single spatial dimension. In cases where the soil is horizontally layered, this has great advantages over conventional methods, such as finite element or finite difference methods, since very little computer storage and data preparation time is required. Solution of the time dependent problem is achieved by applying a Laplace transformation to the field variables, obtaining solutions in Laplace transform space, and then numerically inverting the transformed solutions to obtain the real time behaviour. This eliminates the need for ‘marching type’ schemes where a solution is found from one at a previous time. By direct inversion of the Laplace transform, a solution may be obtained directly at any given time.

    Notes: In this paper, liquefaction potential of loose sand deposit subjected to an earthquake loading is evaluated. The analysis is performed by using a finite element technique incorporating the equations of dynamics of saturated porous elastoplastic media. The soil response is modelled by an anisotropic hardening rule, similar to that as proposed by Poorooshasb and Pietruszczak.1 The concept is based on the theory of bounding surface plasticity incorporating a non-associated flow rule and the idea of reflected plastic potential. The present paper provides a modified formulation to that discussed in Reference 1. Modifications are aimed at simplifying the concept for numerical implementations.

    Notes: A rational approach for dealing with uncertainties in geotechnical performance predictions is presented. First, sources of uncertainty are identified and treated stochastically. Then, the relative importance of each source is analysed and its influence in the decision-making process is evaluated. Strong inferences concerning the spatial structure of soils are drawn from field or laboratory measurements, while maintaining consistency with engineering knowledge and experimenal findings. Optimal estimates of soil properties are derived by a stochastic method which is mathematically meaningful and portrays adequately the real behaviour of the data. The method is powerful when the data exhibit homogeneous or non-homogeneous characteristics, and works well with any kind of data support. Its applicability is illustrated in a case study involving field vane data. Furthermore, contributions and benefits of the results obtained to the geotechnical decisions and design are discussed.

    Notes: Triaxial fracture tests with overburden pressures ranging from 0.69 to 136 MPa were performed to determine the material parameters involved in a cap model for limestone. Three material parameters A, B and C, were evaluated through Powell's optimization method and the remaining parameters through simulation-curve fitting procedure. The resulting cap model was tested against separate triaxial fracture and hydrostatic compression tests. Modification of the original hardening function, as proposed by DiMaggio and Sandler, provided an improved fit for the experimental data.

    Notes: This paper presents a study of the interaction between the foundations of a jack-up rig and the pile foundations of an adjacent steel offshore platform. Parametric solutions are presented to evaluate the effect of the rig footing load on the performance of the pile foundation. Homogeneous and non-homogeneous soil conditions have been considered. An example is used to illustrate the application of the solutions in a practical problem.

    Notes: This paper presents a study on the optimal estimation of initial in-situ stresses, in which the in-situ stresses may be constant or linearly changing along a co-ordinate axis, from a set of relative measurements between adjacent measuring points utilized for monitoring the stability of tunnels. Displacements occurring before installation of measuring devices can be taken into account. The approach may be used for a variety of models used to simulate the ground media through which the tunnels are being excavated and has the advantage of being easy to implement on the computer and having both good precision and calculation stability. Finally, an analysis is carried out on the stability of the algorithm and computational time for different numerical examples.

    Notes: Existing approaches for locating the critical slip surfaces are briefly reviewed. A number of techniques and strategies are proposed whereby the efficiency and robustness of some of the existing approaches can be enhanced. A new solution scheme is also developed for rapid calculation of the factor of safety. The new solution scheme requires only one level of iterations in contrast to the conventional solution scheme which invoives two levels of iterations. It is also applicable to a variety of stability models. A new compound iterative procedure is developed whereby the factor of safety can be calculated to a high accuracy within a few iterations. This reduces greatly the total computer time required for locating the critical slip surfaces.

    Notes: A survey is presented of some recent developments of the numerical techniques for back analysis in the field of geomechanics, with particular reference to tunnelling problems.     Notes: The effect of axial load on the torsional pile response and the effect of torque on the axial pile response are investigated. To perform this investigation, a computer program was developed which uses the transfer matrix method to analyse a pile supported by a series of coupled axial and torsional elasto-plastic springs. The study indicated that the ultimate torsional and axial pile capacities, as well as the axial displacements and rotations, are significantly affected by the combined load action.

    Notes: This paper presents plasticity formulation of the multi-laminate framework of soil models. Soil element is assumed to be an assemblage of perfectly fitting polyhedral blocks and irreversible deformations are assumed to occur due to sliding, separation/closing of the boundaries. Using an appropriate summation of mechanisms, the total plastic strains are obtained by evaluating contributions from an infinite number of randomly oriented planes in space.     Notes: High gas pressure gradients in coal seams play an important role in the occurrence of outbursts during underground coal mining. Excess stress resulting from body forces due to high pressure gradients contributes to the structural failure of coal. We present a one-dimensional model of a dry, rigid coal seam with a moving mine face and determine gas pressures by solving the nonlinear equation for gas flow in a porous medium. An implicit finite difference scheme is used. Since the structure of coal has a dual porosity nature, we consider flow through both the macropores and the micropores. We investigate the effect of changes in mining velocity, idle mining periods and coal properties on the pressure profile in the coal seam. When the yield zone behind the moving mine face is taken into account, the greatest body force occurs on the least competent section of the coal seam.

    Notes: A method is detailed for the plastic collapse analysis of long piles typical of offshore foundations, subjected to inclined loading. The method is based on the upper bound method of plasticity. It easily incorporates both axial and lateral variable soil resistance and variable pile cross section properties. The incorporation of plastic yield interaction between axial load and moment for the pile is a key feature of the method. The solution can itself be cast in the form of a curve representing axial and lateral load interaction and is amenable to incorporation in the analysis of foundation systems such as pile groups.

    Notes: This study deals with the geometrically nonlinear axisymmetric static and transient response of cylindrically orthotropic thin circular plates resting on Pasternak elastic foundations subjected to uniformly distributed loads. Clamped and simply-supported plates with radially movable and immovable edges have been considered. The von-Kármán type nonlinear governing equations have been solved using orthogonal point collocation method in the space domain and Newmark-β scheme in the time domain.     Notes: A linear boundary element (BE) model is proposed for the uncoupied simulation of land subsidence due to gas, oil and hot water production over three-dimensional (3-D) arbitrarily shaped reservoirs. The pore pressure decline is assumed to be specified in advance, e.g. via a numerical model of flow. Use is made of the fundamental solution derived in 1885 by Boussinesq for a vertical load acting upon the traction-free surface of a semi-infinite medium. A straightforward application of Betti's (1872) reciprocal theorem allows for the development of a boundary integral whose numerical execution yields directly the downward settlement over the point of interest.The new procedure is applied to assess land sinking caused by an uniform pore pressure decline occurring within fields of elliptical shape and to explore the influence of the assumption of small reservoir thickness which underlies the ‘tension center’ or ‘strain nucleus’ approach previously developed by Geertsma in 1966. The results emphasize the numerical efficiency of the solution and the promising features of the BE method for the evaluation of ground subsidence in 3-D problems.The present model is based on the theory of the linear poroelasticity and is implemented for a mechanically homogeneous and isotropic half-space. It allows for any arbitrary geometry of the reservoir and for a non-uniform distribution of the pore pressure decline. It may easily be extended to other physical settings for which a vertical surface point load solution is available.

    Notes: A finite element procedure is developed to accurately locate the free surface of unconfined seepage flow through porous media. The free surface is taken as the boundary between wet and dry soils, with flow in the saturated region characterized by Darcy's law.     Notes: The behaviour of single vertical piles subjected to lateral loading at the pile head was analysed. Based on the assumption of beam on elastic foundation, the analysis was made by using the method of direct analysis which is a numerical approach making direct use of governing physical laws without explicitly utilizing the differential equation of vibration. The analysis provides short-time pile response to pulse loadings. These results indicate, among others, that an interaction between the dilatation and shear waves results in a stress discontinuity of considerable magnitude which may deserve special attention in pile design.

    Notes: Two analytic closed form solutions for the one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation are presented. These solutions take account of changes in surface concentration with time as mass is transported into the soil. The first solution is developed for the case of rapid landfill construction. The second solution considers a time-dependent mass input to the landfill. The use of these solutions is illustrated by a number of examples and it is shown that consideration of the finite mass of contaminant within the landfill can significantly affect the concentration profiles beneath the landfill.

    Notes: An approach is presented for the prediction of linear and nonlinear load-deformation behaviour of laterally loaded pile groups. The individual pile response is obtained by the conventional p-y curve technique, while group interaction is modelled using the Mindlin's solution. Good agreement is observed when comparing the present method of analysis with the commonly used interaction factor approach for the computation of response of pile groups embedded in a homogenous, isotropic elastic half-space. The predicted pile group behaviour also compares favourably with existing field data on laterally loaded pile groups in soft clay.

    Notes: The stability and deformation of the seafloor in response to storm wave loading is an important consideration in the design of pipelines, anchors, and offshore structures such as gravity-and pile-supported platforms. Two quite different approaches have been proposed for investigating the effects of storm waves on seafloor sands. These approaches derive from quite different considerations of soil-water interaction.In one of these approaches (exemplified by Yamamoto and Madsen) the seafloor is visualized to be a porous elastic or Coulomb-damped porous nonlinear medium. In this approach, the response of the seafloor, i.e. the displacements, stresses and porewater pressures, are computed for a given wave. The response is transient and is, therefore, related to the largest wave in the storm wave group.On the other hand, in the approach proposed by Seed and Rahman, only the development of residual porewater pressures (for estimating liquefaction potential) due to the storm wave group are considered. The effects of transient porewater pressures and stresses on the seafloor sands are ignored. The residual porewater pressures are computed using properties based on initial effective stresses through a porewater generation-dissipation model.The application of these techniques to problems of offshore structures such as pile-supported platforms has led to considerable uncertainty and confusion. In this paper, both of these approaches are combined to investigate seafloor response to a storm wave group. For typical storm wave conditions that exist in the North Sea, it appears that the inclusion of damping, inertia and anisotropic permeabilities in the study is not important relative to ocean sands. Parametric studies show that, for a given wave, the thickness and the stiffness properties of the soil deposit dictate the response of the deposit. The displacements in the deposit are, therefore, affected by the generation of residual porewater pressures.

    Notes: Theoretical formulations to the problem of expansion of spherical and cylindrical cavities in a layered elastic system are presented. The medium surrounding the cavity is assumed to consist of several layers, and each is idealized as a linear elastic solid. The solutions are expressed in matrix forms and can be obtained using a programmable calculator. The developed solutions are of some importance in geomechanics. The spherical cavity solution can be used to compute the settlement of single axially loaded piles. The predicted settlement using the analysis outlined herein agrees reasonably well with one case of field measurements. The cylindrical cavity solution can be used to manifest the effect of disturbed mass at the cavity wall on the stress-strain and deformation characteristics of the intact mass.

    Notes: The behaviour of an under-reamed anchor in a consolidating soil is examined by approximating the anchor as an impermeable circular plate embedded in a deep soil layer. Hankel and Laplace transforms are applied to the equations governing the consolidation process, and this greatly simplifies the equations, allowing a solution to be obtained for the transformed variables. Numerical inversion of both the Hankel and Laplace transforms is used to obtain the solution at any time.A particular feature of the solution method is that the unknown contact stress between the anchor and the soil and the unknown flows in the plane of the anchor are approximated as a series of simple functions with unknown coefficients. By determining the coefficients of the terms in the series, the complete solution may be found.Computations have been carried out using the method proposed, and results are presented for the time-settlement behaviour of an impermeable anchor. These results are compared with some published and some recomputed finite element data, and this highlights some of the difficulties encountered in using such numerical techniques.

    Notes: The stress solution in plasticity with an associated or a non-associated flow rule is considered. Upon fully implicit integration of the relevant constitutive relations the stress is obtained as the projection of the (fictitious) elastic stress onto the yield surface for given values of the hardening softening variables. This projection is defined, for a general non-associated flow rule, in adjusted complementary elastic energy, which becomes exactly the complementary energy when the flow rule is associated.Isotropic elasticity and mean-stress dependent isotropic yield criteria (pertinent to soil) are considered and the implications of a certain class of non-associated flow rules are evaluated. This class relates to dilatant (or contractant) materials and involves non-associated plastic volume change. The corresponding stress solutions are shown to be strongly influenced by Poisson's ratio and by the dilation angle.

    Notes: A physically motivated constitutive law for the behaviour of geologic discontinuities with dilatancy and contact surface degradation (damage) is presented. In the formulation of the law, the paper distinguishes between macroscopic and microscopic features of the contact surface. Through macroscope considerations. an incremental constitutive law is derived which is applicable to a large class of contact-friction problems. By idealizing the microstructure to consist of interlocking asperity surfaces, the constitutive equations are specialized for the description of rock joints including effects such as dilatancy, asperity surface degradation and bulking. Several examples are considered demonstrating the law's behaviour and agreement with experimental data. The incremental form of the equations that are derived are amenable to implementation in numerical procedures such as finite element and discrete element (rigid block) computer programs.

    Notes: Elastic/plastic deformations in frictional materials under moving surface loads are investigated. The static and kinematic shakedown theorems are used to obtain estimates of the critical shakedown load for plane strain deformations under trapezoidal surface load distributions and for three-dimensional deformations under loads distributed over circular areas. It is shown that the material can fail either by incremental collapse or in cyclic or alternating collapse modes.

    Notes: The elastostatic analysis of layered systems (such as a soil consisting of a set of L individually homogeneous strata) is tackled here on the basis of discretized boundary integral equations (boundary element method). By exploiting the peculiar chain-like pattern of the system, a recursive formula is obtained which generates economically a ‘stiffness matrix’ of the first n layers (from bottom) at the upper interface with the subsequent layer (n = 1…L). The ‘successive stiffness’ method proposed is shown to imply noteworthy advantages with respect to both the standard boundary element method by zones (or subregions) and another ad hoc, earlier method resting on a boundary element approach combined with the transfer matrix concept. This conclusion is corroborated by two-dimensional examples.

    Notes: The formulation of viscoelastic solutions from elastic equations using the ‘correspondence principle’ and an inverse Laplace transform has been discussed extensively in the literature. Because this method has been developed, many time-dependent solutions can be obtained from closed form elastic solutions and conditions have been delineated in which the ‘quasi-elastic’ approximation of the viscoelastic solution is within acceptable tolerance. This communication shows the feasibility of the application of these methods to formulate approximate nonlinear viscoelastic solutions with nonlinear stress-strain materials, and for want of a specific nonlinear model to demonstrate this, the hyperbolic model was selected. The ‘power law’ is used to model the relaxation modulus of the viscoelastic materials. There are five related development that are discussed here using a simple numerical example to illustrate each of them and they are: (1) a linear elastic solution, (2) a linear viscoelastic solution, (3) a nonlinear elastic solution, (4) a nonlinear viscoelastic solution and finally, (5) a ‘regression’ approximation of the nonlinear viscoelastic solution which is suggested by the series form of the elastic solution. All of these are related to one another and each provides an acceptably accurate solution of the problem it addresses. The latter is of particular practical interest since it can be used to provide answers to problems involving nonlinear viscoelastic materials while requiring only very small calculation times. The problem used as an example is the calculation of the displacement of a circular hole in an infinite plate made of a material with a nonlinear time-dependent stress-strain relationship. The nonlinear elastic form of the solution was developed by matching results from nonlinear finite element analysis.

    Notes: We study the transient motion of the solidification front during the growth of semiconductor crystals in the horizontal Bridgman geometry. The calculation is based on a two-dimensional flow. We use finite elements which deform with the motion of the interface. The energy equation is coupled with the isothermal constraint of the interface in an implicit transient algorithm. Several examples show the oscillatory motion of the interface caused by the periodic flow of the melt, and they reveal the importance of the growth rate on the shape of the interface.

    Notes: Many fluid flow problems of current interest occur in domains that are mappable to a rectangle or a box; conformal mappings are particularly useful in this regard. We are concerned here with the efficient solution of such problems using finite elements. The central issue is the element choice, and this issue is addressed in terms of operation counts, computer memory and I/0 requirements, and the extent to which code vectorization is possible. It is concluded that rectangular (box) elements generally lead to more efficient algorithms that triangular (tetrahedral) elements. A synthesis of algorithms, based on bilinear (trilinear) elements, is presented. The algorithms have the attributes of simplicity, accuracy, stability and straightforward incorporation of boundary conditions. For bilinear and trilinear elements, it is found that product and first-derivative terms are well-handled by the Galerkin FE method, but that it is advantageous to go outside of the Galerkin framework when treating second-derivative terms. It is particularly important to consider the form of the governing equations, vis-à-vis the choice of staggered, non-staggered and/or mixed-order elements, and to choose an appropriate time scheme. The described techniques have been successfully applied to a variety of problems in regular domains, including the solution of the three-dimensional time-dependent hydrostatic primitive equations; these are stiff and include first and second derivative terms, non-linearities and variable coefficients due to a conformal mapping.

    Notes: In general Stokes problems, no boundary conditions exist for the pressure. But pressure is an L2(Ω) function and can uniquely be represented as the divergence of a precisely defined vector field. In the 2-D case, this vector field can in turn be represented as the sum of a gradient (of a pressure-potential) and the curl of a second scalar potential. The latter potential is entirely determined by the first one. A variational equation is obtained for such pressure potential class, which exists and is uniquely characterized. This variational problem is well-posed. Finite element approximations can easily be realized and ensure high convergence rates for the L2(Ω) norm of the pressure.

    Notes: A system of reaction-diffusion equations which governs the propagation of an ozone decomposition laminar flame in Lagrangian co-ordinates is analysed by means of compact operators and modified equation methods. It is shown that the use of fourth-order accurate compact operators yields very accurate solutions if sufficient numbers of grid points are located at the flame front, where very steep gradients of temperature and species concentrations exist. Modified equation methods are shown to impose a restriction on the time step under certain conditions. The solutions obtained by means of compact operators and modified equation methods are compared with solutions obtained by other methods; good agreement is obtained.

    Notes: Linearized multidimensional flow in a gas centrifuge can be described away from the ends by Onsager's pancake equation. However a rotating annulus results in a slightly different set of boundary conditions from the usual symmetry at the axis of rotation. The problem on an annulus becomes ill-posed and requires some special attention. Herein we treat axially linear inner and outer rotor temperature distributions and velocity slip. An existence condition for a class of non-trivial, one-dimensional solutions is given. New exact solutions in the infinite bowl approximation have been derived containing terms that are important at finite gap width and non-vanishing velocity slip. The usual one-dimensional, axially symmetric solution is obtained as a limit. Our previously reported finite element algorithm has been extended to treat this new class of problems. Effects of gap width, temperature and slip conditions are illustrated. Lastly, we report on the compressible, finite length, circular Couette flow for the first time.

    Notes: An application and an extension (to complex variables) of the classical augmented Lagrangian method is performed. Finite element computations are realized in the two-dimensional case of an harmonic Navier-Stokes problem with periodic boundary conditions. A formulation (extended from the traditional Stokes problem) involving a simple Lagrangian, solved by the Uzawa algorithim, was previously used.1 This treatment proved unsatisfactory for large frequencies. The efficient and well-known augmented Lagrangian technique solved by the Uzawa algorithm is used to overcome these shortcomings. Other, better techniques could be used. Nevertheless the simple method used here is efficient. Moreover the numerical implementation needs little memory storage, which is an important factor in this particular case. The well-known conditioning technique employed is shown to be well-adapted in this case, a fact which emerges from the study of the non-symmetric problem involved. Finally, many tests, computations and experimental data are presented.

    Notes: The piecewise linear method (PLM) based on time operator splitting is used to solve the unsteady compressible Euler equations describing the two-dimensional flow around and through a straight wall inlet placed stationary in a rapidly rotating supersonic flow. The PLM scheme is formulated as a Lagrangian step followed by an Eulerian remap. The inhomogeneous terms in the Euler equations written in cylindrical coordinates are first removed by Sod's method and the resulting set of equations is further reduced to two sets of one-dimensional Lagrangian equations, using time operator splitting. The numerically generated flow fields are presented for different values of the back pressure imposed at the downstream exit of the inlet nozzle. An oblique shock wave is formed in front of the almost whole portion of the inlet entrance, the incoming streamlines being deflected towards the higher pressure side after passing through the oblique shock wave and then bending down to the lower pressure side. A reverse flow appears inside the inlet nozzle owing to the recovery pressure of the incoming streams being lower than the back pressure of the inlet nozzle.

    Notes: The splitting difference scheme is used to study flow separation. Flows behind a circular cylinder are computed as a model problem. In view of the nature of the flow, the variables are transformed. The boundary condition for the pressure is given from an intermediate velocity. The free-slip velocity boundary conditions on the rigid wall are given by interpolation. The multigrid algorithm is applied to the pressure iteration. We also choose better initial values for the model problem by means of the multigrid algorithm idea.
