Description: The International Cometary Explorer (ICE) encounter with Comet Giacobini-Zinner took place 7 years after the spacecraft's original launch on 12 August 1978 as the International Sun Earth Explorer 3 (ISEE-3), part of a three-spacecraft project to study the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere. Transfer to an interplanetary trajectory was performed via a 119-km-altitute, gravity-assist, lunar swingby on December 1983. Navigation support during interplanetary cruise and comet encounter was provided by orbit determination utilizing radio metric data from the DSN 64-meter antennas in Goldstone, California and Madrid, Spain. Orbit solutions yielding predictions of 50-km geocentric delivery accuracy in the target aim plane were achieved during interplanetary cruise and at comet encounter using 6-to-12-week data arcs between periodic attitude-change maneuvers. One-sigma two-way range and range rate residuals were consistently 40 meters and 0.2 mm/s or better, respectively. Non-gravitational forces affected the comet's motion during late August and early September 1985 and caused a 2300-km shift in the orbit of the comet relative to the spacecraft. This necessitated a final ICE orbit trim maneuver 3 days prior to encounter. Near-real-time assessment of two-way 2-GHz (S-band) Doppler pseudo-residuals during the June and July 1985 trajectory change maneuvers aided in calibration of the spacecraft's thrusters in preparation for this final critical maneuver. Post-flight analysis indicates tail centerline passage was achieved within 10 seconds of the predicted time and geocentric position uncertainty at encounter was less than 40 km.

Description: An Atlas of Comet Halley 1910 II photographs and spectra is being prepared. The major section consists of 838 photographic observations from fifteen observatories around the world. Multiple images of many photographs are reproduced to bring out detail in the near nucleus region, in the coma and in the tail. The Atlas contains a total of 1209 photographic images of the 1910 apparition. In addition there are sections showing drawings from 1935 and 1910. A short section compares 1910 drawings and photographs. The final two sections display digitally processed images from 1910 and 1910 spectra. A three part appendix contains diagrams of various data associated with the 1910 apparition, a set of tables of all 1910 images and a bibliography.

Description: Airborne Imaging Spectrometer data from Mono Lake, California, were studied in order to establish spectral radiance of test areas under solar illumination. The objective is to provide a method of atmospheric correction for major absorbers from the spectrometer data themselves. Crucial to the analysis is radiometric calibration of the instrument. Good agreement is found between calculated and measured radiances for uniform surface targets (beaches), but simulations of atmospheric properties with LOWTRAN lead to unreasonably low values of atmospheric precipitable water. Absorptions from carbon dioxide are not detected in the AIS data, but are strongly present in the LOWTRAN model. The apparent low contrast of all atmospheric absorption bands leads to a study of contamination from overlapping spectral orders in the AIS data. The suspected contamination is shown unambiguously to be present beyond approximately 1500 nm and consists of an extra radiance term including atmospheric bands from the delta/2 wavelength interval. A rigorous removal of the unwanted spectral contamination does not seem possible for any data taken in the rock mode. Rough estimates for tree-mode observations might be pieced together is a suitable after-the-fact radiometric claibration of the instrument can be formulated.

Description: Several processed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) samples were produced to date. The Raman spectra and D/H ratios of these samples will be studied in the near future. A manuscript was sent to Icarus which gives a detailed discussion of the possibility of using solar flare tracks in interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) to determine a cometary vs. asteroidal source of the IDPs. The technique looks promising and a program was started to measure the large number of IDP track density necessary to address the issue of the source(s) of the dust. The results could potentially tell a great deal about comets and/or asteroids.

Description: Over the past 3 years, a series was obtained of the CCD images of regions surrounding young stellar objects (YSO's) located in a variety of environments with the goal of providing a census of the properties of mass outflows associated these objects. A catalog describing the optical morphology and kinematics of 38 mass outflows associated with young stellar objects (YSOs) was completed. The direct detection was reported of disks surrounding HL Tau and LI551/IRS 5 -- both sources of optical jets and large-scale mass outflows. In each case, the disk dimensions are on the order of several hundred astronomical units and the disk dust masses approximately 10 to the -7th power solar masses. A program aimed at indirect detection of circumstellar disks associated with YSOs was started. The technique involves comparison of an observed bolometric luminosity (L(bol)) with an independent measure of the true luminosity (L(spec)) of a YSO which derives from the observed strengths of surface-gravity-sensitive spectral features.

Description: In order to provide observers with accurate cometary ephemerides, up-to-date astrometric positions must be used to update the existing orbit and ephemeris for each object. In addition, nongravitational forces must be taken into account; these forces are assumed due to the rocket effect of outgassing cometary ices. Once successfully modeled, the cometary nucleus spin direction, spin axis evolution, and the volatility of the nucleus ices can be inferred. The predicted ephemerides also become far more accurate.

Description: Stars are observed with a ground-based instrument designed to measure small changes in the line-of-sight velocities. The purpose of the observations is to detect large planets by the oscillatory reflex motion they induce on the stars they are orbiting. The instrument is an optical spectrometer for which wavelengths are first calibrated by transmission through a tunable Fabry-Perot etalon interferometer. Changes in the line-of-sight velocities are revealed by changes in the Doppler shift of the absorption-line spectra of stars. The scrambling of incident light by an optical fiber and the stability of wavelength calibration by a tilt-tunable Fabry-Perot etalon provide immunity to systematic errors that historically have effected more conventional radial velocity spectrographs. A cross-dispersed echelle spectrograph spatially separates the orders of constructive interference transmitted through the etalon. Selecting several echelle diffraction orders in the vicinity of 4250 to 4750 A, which are imaged on a CCD, about 350 points on the profile of the stellar spectrum are sampled by successive orders of interferometric transmission through the etalon.

Description: The Space Shuttle Challenger was observed spectroscopically in two passes over Maui during the Spacelab 2 mission. Through most of one of the passes strong bands centered at 1.52 and 1.69 microns, tentatively identified as OH bands, were detected. The average luminosity of the Shuttle in the 1.45 to 1.75 micron range was roughly equal to that of a star of magnitude +5.5. The luminosity was much lower during part of the pass. Spectra from 0.65 to 2.4 microns were obtained during the second pass. These showed that most of the nonthermal emission is in the 1.2 to 2.2 micron range as would be expected for vibrationally excited OH.

Description: Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data were collected 30 August 1985 from a desert shrub community in central Oregon. Spectra from artificial targets placed on the test site and from bare soil, big sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata wyomingensis), silver sagebrush (Artemesia cana bolander), and exposed volcanic rocks were studied. Spectral data from grating position 3 (tree mode) were selected from 25 ground positions for analysis by Principal Factor Analysis (PFA). In this grating position, as many as six factors were identified as significant in contributing to spectral structure. Channels 74 through 84 (tree mode) best characterized between-class differences. Other channels were identified as nondiscriminating and as associated with such errors as excessive atmospheric absorption and grating positin changes. The test site was relatively simple with the two species (A. tridentata and A. cana) representing nearly 95% of biomass and with only two mineral backgrounds, a montmorillonitic soil and volcanic rocks. If, as in this study, six factors of spectral structure can be extracted from a single grating position from data acquired over a simple vegetation community, then AIS data must be considered rich in information-gathering potential.

Description: Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data were acquired over an area of freshwater wetlands in Central California on September 23, 1985. Plant samples were subsequently collected along the flight line with the goal of relating plant tissue chemistry to spectral reflectance in the near-infrared region. It was determined that a consistent relationship existed between spectral response and plant tissue chemistry. This was especially evident in the 1500 to 1700 nm region.

Description: Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data were acquired in 1985 over the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, Alaska for the analysis of canopy characteristics including biochemistry. Concurrent with AIS overflights, foliage from fifteen coniferous and deciduous forest stands were analyzed for a variety of biochemical constituents including nitrogen, lignin, protein, and chlorophyll. Preliminary analysis of AIS spectra indicates that the wavelength region between 1450 to 1800 namometers (nm) displays distinct differences in spectral response for some of the forest stands. A flat field subtraction (forest stand spectra - flat field spectra) of the AIS spectra assisted in the interpretation of features of the spectra that are related to biology.

Description: Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data were collected over the fossil hot spring deposit at Ivanhoe, Nevada in order to determine the surface distribution of NH4-bearing minerals. Laboratory studies show that NH4-bearing minerals have characteristic absorption features in the near-infrared (NIR). Ammonium-bearing feldspars and alunites were observed at the surface of Ivanhoe using a hand-held radiometer. However, first look analysis of the AIS images showed that the line was about 500 m east of its intended mark, and the vegetation cover was sufficiently dense to inhibit preliminary attempts at making relative reflectance images for detection of ammonium minerals.

Description: The Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) was flown over granitic, volcanic, and calc-silicate terrain around the Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine in Queensland, in a test of its mineralocial mapping capabilities. An analysis strategy and restoration and enhancement techniques were developed to process the 128 band AIS data. A preliminary analysis of one of three AIS flight lines shows that the data contains considerable spectral variation but that it is also contaminated by second-order leakage of radiation from the near-infrared region. This makes the recognition of expected spectral absorption shapes very difficult. The effect appears worst in terrains containing considerable vegetation. Techniques that try to predict this supplementary radiation coupled with the log residual analytical technique show that expected mineral absorption spectra can be derived. The techniques suggest that with additional refinement correction procedures, the Australian AIS data may be revised. Application of the log residual analysis method has proved very successful on the cuprite, Nevada data set, and for highlighting the alunite, linite, and SiOH mineralogy.

Description: The Singatse Range is composed of a series of 53 types of volcanic, plutonic, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. In addition the Jurassic plutonic rocks are also of economic interest for their copper mineralization which is contained in a porphyry dike swarm. The 1984 and 1985 flight results from the Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) instrument flown in the NASA/JPL C-130 aircraft are contrasted and compared. The 1984 data are less noisy than the 1985, in which many sets of vertical stripings from bad detectors can be seen. Significantly however, enough of the hydrothermal alteration patterns can be seen in each line at the mutual crossing points that one can say that the specific targets were detected in both year's flights. The spectra of both years are corrupted by the second-order effect from the grating, but 0-H bond absorption at essentially correct wavelengths for sericite and/or kaolinite can be seen.

Description: The surface mineralogy in and around Moses Rock diatreme, a kimberlite-bearing dike in SW Utah, was examined using internally calibrated Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data. Distinct near-infrared absorption characteristics of clays, gypsum, and serpentine (a key marker for kinberlite concentration) allowed the surface units containing these components to be identified spatially and the relative abundance of each component measured. Within the dike itself, channels and dispersed components of kimberlite and blocks of country rocks were accurately determined.

Description: Analysis of Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data acquired in Australia has revealed a number of operational problems. Horizontal striping in AIS imagery and spectral distortions due to order overlap were investigated. Horizontal striping, caused by grating position errors can be removed with little or no effect on spectral details. Order overlap remains a problem that seriously compromises identification of subtle mineral absorption features within AIS spectra. A spectrometric model of the AIS was developed to assist in identifying spurious spectral features, and will be used in efforts to restore the spectral integrity of the data.

Description: The study uses an emission line, differential imaging camera built by the Science Operations Branch. This instrument allows photometric data to be obtained over a large area of a comet in a large number of resolution elements. The detector is a 100x100 Reticon array which with interchangeable optics can give resolutions from 2" to 30" over a field of 1' to 15'. The camera through its controlling computer can simultaneously take images in on-line and continuum filters and through computer subtraction and calibration present a photometric image of the comet produced by only the emission of the molecule under study. Initial work has shown two significant problems. First the auxiliary equipment of the telescope has not allowed the unambiguous location of faint comets so that systematic observations could be made, and secondly initial data has not shown much molecular emission from the faint comets which were located. Work last year on a software and hardware display system and this year on additional guide motors on the 36-inch telescope has allowed the differential camera to act as its own finder and guide scope. Comet IRAS was observed in C2 and CO+, as well as an occultation by the comet of SAO029103. The perodic comet Giacobini-Zinner was also observed in C2.

Description: The physical properties of asteroids were studied by telescopic observations and laboratory and theoretical work. Spectrophotometry from 0.3 to 1.1 microns and 1.2, 1.6 and 2.2 micron photometry allow spectral-compositional classification of asteroids. Based on laboratory data and telescopic observations, it was found that infrared measurements at 1.2, 1.6 and 2.2 microns provide a relatively rapid and accurate method for the classification of minor planets and are important in comparing asteroids with meteorites. This technique was proven and employed in an expanded survey of Apollo-Amor-Aten and other unusual asteroids recently scanned by IRAS.

Observing techniques were developed which make it possible to observe as close as elongation 3 deg., and to find, track and measure comets at all wavelengths in full daylight. Comet Halley was measured on twenty four occasions between December 12, 1985 and March 25, 1986. Clear weather seems to come on holidays, and days on which are observed including Winter Solstice, Christmas, New Years, Valentines day, Super Bowl Sunday and the Vernal Equinox. Halley is observed within hours of perihelion passage.

Description: Near-infrared reflectance spectra 0.6 to 2.5 micrometer were acquired of asteroids 1627 Ivar (Amor), 43 Ariadne, 335 Roberta, 386 Siegena and 695 Bella (3:1 Kirkwood Gap) with the IRTF, Mauna Kea. CCD spectra 0.5-1.0 micrometer were acquired of 1866 Sisyphus (Apollo), 17 Thetis, 695 Bella, 797 Montana, and 877 Walkure (3:1 Kirkwood Gap) using facilities at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. An upper limit on the production rate of CN in asteroid 3200 Phaeton of 〈 4 x 10 to the 23rd power sec was determined based on photometric measurements at 3871A using facilities at Lowell Observatory. This value is in the range of the lowest production rate measured for a comet, however, it does not constitute a positive detection of CN in this asteroid. A first attempt of look for companion objects or evidence of dust debris associated with this asteroid was made with a CCD camera. Whereas the search extended to 19th magnitude (corresponding to 150m and 330m for albedos of 0.15 and 0.03 respectively), a look close enough to the asteroid was not attained to definitively eliminate the presence of coorbiting dust debris.

Description: Spectral characteristics of semi-arid shrub communities were examined using Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data collected in the tree mode on 23 May 1985. Mesic sites with relatively high vegetation density and distinct zonation patterns exhibited greater spectral signature variations than sites with more xeric shrub communities. Spectral signature patterns were not directly related to vegetation density or physiognomy, although spatial maps derived from an 8-channel maximum likelihood classification were supported by photo-interpreted surface features. In AIS data, the principal detected effect of shrub vegetation on the alluvial fans is to lower reflectance across the spectrum. These results are similar to those reported during a period of minimal physiological activity in autumn, indicating that shadows cast by vegetation canopies are an important element of soil-vegetation interaction under conditions of relatively low canopy cover.

The spectral region covered, 0.9 to 2.1 microns, was little used in vegetation studies. Calibration and normalization procedures must be refined to compensate for cloud cover, detector and other system noise, and possible second-order effects.

Description: Spectral reflectance properties of deciduous oak-hickory forests covering the eastern half of the Rolla Quadrangle were examined using Thematic Mapper (TM) data acquired in August and December, 1982 and Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data acquired in August, 1985. For the TM data distinctly high relative reflectance values (greater than 0.3) in the near infrared (Band 4, 0.73 to 0.94 micrometers) correspond to regions characterized by xeric (dry) forests that overlie soils with low water retention capacities. These soils are derived primarily from rhyolites. More mesic forests characterized by lower TM band 4 relative reflectances are associated with soils of higher retention capacities derived predominately from non-cherty carbonates. The major factors affecting canopy reflectance appear to be the leaf area index (LAI) and leaf optical properties. The Suits canopy reflectance model predicts the relative reflectance values for the xeric canopies. The mesic canopy reflectance is less well matched and incorporation of canopy shadowing caused by the irregular nature of the mesic canopy may be necessary. Preliminary examination of high spectral resolution AIS data acquired in August of 1985 reveals no more information than found in the broad band TM data.

Description: Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data, field and laboratory spectra and samples for X-ray diffraction analysis were collected in argillically altered Tertiary volcanic rocks in the Hot Creek Range, Nevada. From laboratory and field spectral measurements in the 2.0 to 2.4 micron range and using a spectroradiometer with a 4 nm sampling interval, the absorption band centers for kaolinite were loacted at 2.172 and 2.215 microns, for montmorillonite at 2.214 micron and for illite at 2.205. Based on these values and the criteria for resolution and separtion of spectral features, a spectral sampling interval of less than 4 nm is necessary to separate the clays. With an AIS spectral sampling interval of 9.3 nm, a spectral matching algorithm is more effective for separating kaolinite, montmorillonite, ad illite in Hot Creek Range than using the location of absorption minima alone.

The data were corrected for atmospheric effects by a flat-field method, and compared to library spectra of various alteration minerals using a spectral analysis program SPAM. Areas of strong clay alteration were identified on the AIS images that were mapped as kaolinitic, illitic, and sericitic alterations zones. Kaolinitic alteration is distinguishable in the 2.1 to 2.4 and 1.2 to 1.5 micrometer wavelength regions. Montmorillonite, illite, and sericite have absorption features similar to each other at 2.2 micrometer wavelength. Montnorillonite and illite also may be present in varying proportions within one Ground Instantaneous Field of View (GIFOV). In general AIS data is useful in identifying alteration zones that are associated with or lie above precious metal mineralization at Virginia City.

Description: Airborne Imaging Spectrometers (AIS) data collected in 1984 and 1985 showed pronounced striping in the vertical and horizontal directions. This striping reduced the signal to noise ratio so that features of the spectra of forest canopies were obscured or altered by noise. This noise was removed by application of a notch filter to the Fourier transform of the imagery in each waveband.

Description: Selective absorption of electromagnetic radiation by atmospheric gases and water vapor is an accepted fact in terrestrial remote sensing. Until recently, only a general knowledge of atmospheric effects was required for analysis of remote sensing data; however, with the advent of high spectral resolution imaging devices, detailed knowledge of atmospheric absorption bands has become increasingly important for accurate analysis. Detailed study of high spectral resolution aircraft data at the U.S. Geological Survey has disclosed narrow absorption features centered at approximately 2.17 and 2.20 micrometers not caused by surface mineralogy. Published atmospheric transmission spectra and atmospheric spectra derived using the LOWTRAN-5 computer model indicate that these absorption features are probably water vapor. Spectral modeling indicates that the effects of atmospheric absorption in this region are most pronounced in spectrally flat materials with only weak absorption bands. Without correction and detailed knowledge of the atmospheric effects, accurate mapping of surface mineralogy (particularly at low mineral concentrations) is not possible.

Description: The first field test of NASA's Global Positioning System (GPS) Geodetic Program took place in March of 1985. The principal objective of this test was the demonstration of the feasibility of the fiducial station approach to precise GPS-based geodesy and orbit determination. Other objectives included an assessment of the performance of the several GPS receiver types involved in these field tests and the testing of the GIPSY software for GPS data analysis. In this article, the GIPSY (GPS Inferred Positioning System) software system is described and baseline solutions are examined for consistency with independent measurements made using very long baseline interferometry.

Description: The carbon isotopic composition of individual organic compounds of meteoritic origin remains unknown, as most reported carbon isotopic ratios are for bulk carbon or solvent extractable fractions. The researchers managed to determine the carbon isotopic ratios for individual hydrocarbons and monocarboxylic acids isolated from a Murchison sample by a freeze-thaw-ultrasonication technique. The abundances of monocarboxylic acids and saturated hydrocarbons decreased with increasing carbon number and the acids are more abundant than the hydrocarbon with the same carbon number. For both classes of compounds, the C-13 to C-12 ratios decreased with increasing carbon number in a roughly parallel manner, and each carboxylic acid exhibits a higher isotopic number than the hydrocarbon containing the same number of carbon atoms. These trends are consistent with a kinetically controlled synthesis of higher homologues for lower ones.

Description: The Multispectral Atmospheric Mapping Sensor (MAMS) is an airborne scanner which collects imagery in eight visible and three IR bands, with ground resolution of 100 m at a nominal aircraft altitude of 20 km. The visible channels provide continuous spectral coverage from 0.42 to 1.05 microns, and the IR channels measure upwelling and reflected radiation at combinations of 3.7, 6.5, 11.1, and 12.5 microns. These include channels nearly identical to the Landsat TM channels 1-4, and similar to those on the VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) and AVHRR instruments. The high spatial resolution permits investigation of surface thermal and atmospheric water vapor structure at scales not available from current stabilities. Significant modifications have been made since engineering flights in 1985 to improve the radiometric performance. The increased data quality and recent multidisciplinary applications of this data are presented.

Description: In summer 1988 an intensive field experiment was conducted in the vicinity of the Pisgah lava flow in the Mojave Desert. Physical properties such as microtopography, composition, soil moisture, and dielectric constant were measured at five sites representing surfaces with rms heights varying from less than one centimeter to tens of centimeters. In addition, polarimetric radar images at P-band, L-band, and C-band were acquired at three different incidence angles with the NASA/JPL airborne imaging radar polarimeter. Using trihedral corner reflectors deployed in the area prior to imaging, the L- and C-band images were calibrated to provide sigma0 values for each resolution element in the scene. The results of inferring geophysical parameters such as rms surface height and correlation length of the measured surfaces by fitting the observed signatures with those predicted by the small-perturbation model are presented: for smoother surfaces, the rms height values inferred are in good agreement with in situ measurements.

Description: Radar modeling of mangal forest stands in the Sundarbans area of southern Bangladesh is discussed. The modeling uses radar system parameters with forest data on tree height, spacing, biomass, species combinations, and water content (including slightly conductive water) in leaves and trunks of the mangal. For Sundri and Gewa tropical mangal forests, six model components are proposed; the models are required to explain the contributions of various combinations of forest species in the attenuation and scattering of mangal-vegetated nonflooded or flooded surfaces. Statistical data of simulated images have been compared with those of SIR-B images both to refine the modeling procedures and to characterize the model output appropriately. The possibility of delineation of flooded or nonflooded boundaries is discussed.

Description: Surface-air temperature differences are commonly used in a bulk resistance equation for estimating sensible heat flux (H), which is inserted in the one-dimensional energy balance equation to solve for the latent heat flux (LE) as a residual. Serious discrepancies between estimated and measured LE have been observed for partial-canopy-cover conditions, which are mainly attributed to inappropriate estimates of H. To improve the estimates of H over sparse canopies, one- and two-layer resistance models that account for some of the factors causing poor agreement are developed. The utility of the two models is tested with remotely sensed and micrometeorological data for a furrowed cotton field with 20 percent cover and a dry soil surface. It is found that the one-layer model performs better than the two-layer model when a theoretical bluff-body correction for heat transfer is used instead of an empirical adjustment; otherwise, the two-layer model is better.

Description: Experimental treatments in a Douglas-fir forest in NE New Mexico were carried out to determine whether differences in forest canopy chemistry could be detected using data from the Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS-2). Experimental treatments consisted of nitrogen fertilizer additions, sawdust additions, and control plots. After AIS-2 data were collected, the digital number of a given pixel was extracted from each channel, yielding 128 values that were used to form a spectrum. Four spectra were extracted from each treatment plot. Multiple stepwise linear regressions between first and second difference transformations of AIS-2 spectra and the canopy characteristics of biomass, nitrogen concentration, and nitrogen content were performed. The results showed a coefficient of multiple determination of 0.71 between first-difference AIS-2 spectra and measured nitrogen concentration in foliage, indicating that it may be possible to predict nitrogen concentration in Douglas fir using AIS-2 spectra.

Description: The information content in polarimetric SAR images is examined, and the polarimetric image variables containing the information that is important to the classification of terrain features in the images are determined. It is concluded that accurate classification can be done when just over half of the image variables are retained. A reduction in image data dimensionality gives storage savings, and can lead to the improvement of classifier performance. In addition, it is shown that a simplified radar system with only phase-calibrated CO-POL or SINGLE TX channels can give classification performance which approaches that of a fully polarimetric radar.

Description: The spatial and phenological distribution of vegetation was examined in a remote sensing geobotanical study of the East Africa Rift region. Six normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) AVHRR (advanced very high resolution radiometer) scenes (February, June, and September of both 1984 and 1987) were used as a measure of vegetation presence. NOAA ETOPO-5 elevation and geographic coordinate data were coregistered with the multitemporal NDVI images. Univariate and multivariate statistics indicate that the NDVI values are significantly associated with elevation, latitude, and longitude. This supports the concept of quantifiable, regional gradients that affect large-scale geobotanical studies. A quadratic regression line was fitted to the NDVI, elevation, latitude, and longitudinal data. In this way a regional trend, as affected by elevation, was determined. The deviation of the actual data from this regional trend was displayed as an image, and shows the local climatic and geological influences.

Description: Theory and experiments have shown that passive microwave radiometers can be used to measure soil moisture. However, the presence of a vegetative cover alters the measurement that might be obtained under bare conditions. Deterministically accounting for the effect of vegetation and developing algorithms for extracting soil moisture from observations of a vegetable-soil complex present significant obstacles to the practical use of this approach. The presence of a vegetation canopy reduces the sensitivity of passive microwave instruments to soil moisture variations. The reduction in sensitivity, as compared to a bare-soil relationship, increases as microwave frequency increases, implying that the longest wavelength sensors should provide the most information. Sensitivity also decreases as the amount of vegetative wet biomass increases for a given type of vegetation.

Description: Spectral bidirectional reflectances were measured over three natural soil sites using a specially designed radiometer called the Parabola. Two of the sites were bare soils, and the third had a sparse cover of desert scrub. The reflectances were strongly non-Lambertian for all three surfaces, but with markedly different patterns. The measured data were fitted with a quasi-physical reflectance model in which the surface backscattering and forwardscattering are separately formulated. A soil reflectance characterization was obtained by assessing the contributions of the forward, backward, and Lambertian components. This three-parameter characterization produced a satisfactory fit to the measured reflectances and appears promising as a basis for soils categorization.

Description: A radiative-transfer model for the bidirectional reflectance-distribution function (BRDF) shows that snow is moderately anisotropic in the NIR wavelengths. Although the directional-hemispherical albedo of snow decreases as the grains become larger, the forward scattering also increases, with the result that the illumination and viewing geometry must be considered when interpreting physical properties of the surface layer of the snow pack from remote sensing data. Measurements of the BRDF and the transmittance for a variety of snow conditions were made throughout the winter and spring seasons with an SE-590 spectroradiometer, for wavelengths from 0.38 to 1.11 microns. Coincident with these, the surface grain properties were analyzed by stereological methods. A sphere with the same surface-to-volume ratio as the ice grains is used as the equivalent sphere.

The rotational upper limit is compared to the X-ray, TeV, and PeV fluxes reported by Chodil et al. (1967), North et al. (1984), and Protheroe et al. (1984), respectively. It was found that, under certain conditions, the upper limit determined here is not inconsistent with the reports of TeV and PeV emission.

Description: An attempt is made to survey the CO(2-1) emission toward the centers of 17 IR-luminous galaxies which have previously been detected in CO(1-0). These galaxies span a wide range of size and L(FIR)/L(B) ratio, many have multiple-wavelength studies establishing them as starbursts, and some bear a morphological resemblance to M 82. Nine galaxies are detected and useful upper limits are placed on the remaining eight. Using the CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratio of antenna temperature as a diagnostic of optical depth, it is found that all of the galaxies contain predominantly optically thick molecular gas. This implies that the phase of starburst during which the molecular gas is optically thin, currently witnessed in M 82, is either uncommon or short-lived.

Description: Remotely sensed data are being used to estimate foliar chemical content. This paper reviews how stepwise multiple regression and deconvolution have been used to extract chemical information from foliar spectra, and concludes that both methods are useful, but neither is ideal. It is recommended that the focus of research be modeling in the long term and experimentation in the short term. Long-term research should increase our understanding of the interaction between radiation and foliar chemistry so that the focus of research can move from leaf model to canopy model to field experiment. Short-term research should aim to design experiments in which remotely sensed data are used to generate unambiguous and accurate estimates of foliar chemical content.

Description: Multipolarization P-, L-, and C-band airborne SAR data sets were acquired over a coastal zone and a forested wetland of southern Louisiana. The data sets were used with field-collected surface-parameter data in order to determine the value of SAR systems in assessing and mapping coastal-zone surface features. The coastal-zone surface features in this study are sediments, sediment distribution, and the formation of new isles and banks. Results of the data analysis indicate that the P-band radar with 68-cm wavelength is capable of detecting the submerged sediment if the area is very shallow (i.e., a water depth of less than one meter). The penetration capability of P-band radar is also demonstrated in the forested wetland area. The composition and condition of the ground surface can be detected, as well as the standing water beneath dense tree leaves.

Description: Multiband radiometric data from an airborne imaging thermal scanner are being studied for use in finding buried gravel deposits. The techniques are based on measuring relative differences in the thermal properties between gravel-laden targets and the surrounding gravelless background. These properties are determined from modeling the spectral radiant emittance recorded over both types of surfaces in conjunction with ground measurements of the most significant heat flows above and below the surface. Thermodynamic properties of sampled materials from control sites are determined, and diurnal and annual subsurface heat waves are recorded. Thermal models that account for heat exchange at the surface, as well as varying levels of soil moisture, humidity, and vegetation, are needed for adaptation and modification to simulate the physical and radiative environments of this region.

Description: The advanced solid-state array spectroradiometer (ASAS) is an airborne, off-nadir pointing imaging spectroradiometer used to acquire bidirectional radiance data for terrestrial targets. As its platform aircraft flies over a target the sensor can image the target through a sequence of at least seven fore-to-aft view directions ranging up to 45 deg on either side of nadir. ASAS acquires data for 29 spectral bands in the visible and near-infrared portions of the spectrum with a resolution of 15 nm. ASAS data were recently acquired for a prairie ecosystem and a northern forest ecosystem. The data demonstrate the combined effects of reflectance anisotropy and increased atmospheric path length on off-nadir observations. One result of these effects is a variation in vegetation indices as a function of view direction. Normalized-difference-vegetation-indices for prairie grass, coniferous, and deciduous canopies varied up to 14 percent, 23 percent, and 6 percent, respectively, relative to nadir as a function of view zenith angle along the solar principal plane.

Description: During the First International Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Field Experiment (FIFE), 80 gigabytes of image data were generated from a variety of satellite and airborne sensors in a multidisciplinary attempt to study energy and mass exchange between the land surface and the atmosphere. To make these data readily available to researchers with a range of image data handling experience and capabilities, unique image-processing software was designed to perform a variety of nonstandard image-processing manipulations and to derive a set of standard-format image products. The nonconventional features of the software include: (1) adding new layers of geographic coordinates, and solar and viewing conditions to existing data; (2) providing image polygon extraction and calibration of data to at-sensor radiances; and, (3) generating standard-format derived image products that can be easily incorporated into radiometric or climatology models. The derived image products consist of easily handled ASCII descriptor files, byte image data files, and additional per-pixel integer data files (e.g., geographic coordinates, and sun and viewing conditions). Details of the solutions to the image-processing problems, the conventions adopted for handling a variety of satellite and aircraft image data, and the applicability of the output products to quantitative modeling are presented. They should be of general interest to future experiment and data-handling design considerations.

Description: A common problem in acquiring ground-truth data for use in microwave interaction modeling is the capture of surface roughness data that are both sampled at distances comparable to a fraction of the wavelength and extensive enough to represent the surface statistics in at least one resolution cell of the microwave remote sensor used. A technique has been developed for acquiring the necessary photogrammetric data using twin 70-mm film cameras mounted on a helicopter boom. The apparatus is described, and the accuracy with which ground surface roughness can be characterized using this device is estimated. Both standard and cross-correlation methods were used for data reduction. Stereogrammetry is compared with a completely automated image-matching technique. Dense disparity images were generated from the helicopter stereo pairs. Using interior orientation parameters supplied by the camera manufacturers, and assuming that exterior orientation parameters remain constant between control target and test field photography, an extremely dense DEM (digital elevation model) for a test field has been derived. Results are compared, and accuracy estimates are presented.

Description: A model for the brightness temperature of a canopy which is based on the physical characteristics of the vegetation is being developed. This model uses the Peake model to relate the scattering coefficient of the vegetation to its radiometric brightness temperature and a discrete scattering model to computer the scattering coefficient. A distorted Born approximation is used to provide a tractable solution to the scattering problem. To verify the theory a comparison has been made with experiments. Radiometric measurements of brightness temperature were made at L- and C-bands over a crop of mature soybeans, along with ground truth measurements. All model input parameters were measured; there were no free parameters to adjust to obtain agreement with the measurements. Results showed that agreement between theory and measurements was reasonable for horizontal polarization at both L- and C-bands with dry underlying soil.

Description: During the spring of 1988, the NASA/JPL multifrequency, multipolarization SAR (synthetic aperture radar) flew in series of calibration experiments over the Goldstone dry lake bed. An array of calibration devices was deployed, including dihedral and trihedral corner reflectors, polarimetric active radar calibrators, passive receivers, and CW (continuous wave) tone generators. The aim of the campaign was to calibrate both amplitude and phase of the resulting SAR images, over long and short time scales. The results of the analysis of the calibration data collected in the spring of 1988 are presented. Trihedral corner reflector signatures and certain image background measures are used to externally calibrate relative amplitude and phase between polarizations at a given frequency, and to calibrate across frequencies. Assessments are made of the calibration accuracy as a function of image frame position for each frequency, and the stability of the radar calibration over long and short time-scales.

It is noted that, of the seven experiments that searched for high-energy signals since the discovery of SN 1987A, operating in both the TeV region (air Cerenkov arrays) and the 100-TeV region (air shower arrays), not one has reported a continuous signal from the supernova. The only signal reported so far that could be interpreted as a signal from the supernova remnant is from an air shower experiment YANZOS (Bond, 1988), in which a transient flux of photons above 3 TeV was observed. It is pointed out however, that, if a TeV signal is seen, the accompanying gamma-ray flux around 100 MeV should be well above threshold for detection by the EGRET detector on Gamma-Ray Observatory.

Description: Imagery collected on July 11, 1981 from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer aboard the NOAA-7 spacecraft was used in a four-channel (channels 1 to 4) classification study for forest, agriculture/grass, and urban categories. The class signatures composing these categories were compared using the transformed divergence algorithm. Separability in all instances was found to be dominated by emitted radiation more so by channel 3 (3.55 to 3.93 microns) than by channel 4 (10.5 to 11.3 microns). Laboratory spectra obtained for the 3.55 to 3.93-micron region showed that for leaves the transmission was virtually zero, and the reflectances on the leaves and soil investigated were about three percent. Thus, emitted radiation dominated reflected radiation as the mechanism responsible for class separability in this spectral region. The enhancement in the separability contributed by channel 3 over that of channel 4 resulted primarily from the temperature dependence of the Planck function, and to a lesser extent by the increased transmission within channel 3 relative to channel 4.

Description: A general theory based on the implicit mathematical determinacy, and a corresponding algorithm, are developed to derive topographic maps from radar images as photometric arrays. Starting from a control profile, the theory produces topography by an area integration of radar brightness, and the control profile is formed under the assumption that the terrain properties are locally cylindrical. The calibration curve for pixel brightness versus incidence-angle is also produced. In the operational algorithm, topography is produced as a set of independent line integrations down each of the parallel range lines of the image using the theory for control-profile formation. An adaptive technique was employed to process SEASAT images of sand dunes, and the present method is demonstrated with a Motorola image of Crazy Jug Point in the Grand Canyon.

Description: Equivalent width data from Copernicus and IUE appear to have an exponential, rather than a Gaussian distribution of errors. This is probably because there is one dominant source of error: the assignment of the background continuum shape. The maximum likelihood method of parameter estimation is presented for the case of exponential statistics, in enough generality for application to many problems. The method is applied to global fitting of Si II, Fe II, and Mn II oscillator strengths and interstellar gas parameters along many lines of sight. The new values agree in general with previous determinations but are usually much more tightly constrained. Finally, it is shown that care must be taken in deriving acceptable regions of parameter space because the probability contours are not generally ellipses whose axes are parallel to the coordinate axes.

Description: The 12 m telescope of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory has been used at the J = 2-1 transition of CO to increase the known list of giant and supergiant stars with observable circumstellar envelopes. The candidate objects were generally M-type giants and supergiants, chosen for their strong infrared luminosities. Of the 35 objects which were previously undetected, or only marginally detected, 10 were found to produce detectable CO emission. Physical parameters of the envelopes are derived by source modeling. Mass-loss rates vary from 10 to the -7th to 4 x 10 to the -5th solar mass/yr.

Description: Techniques are described for accounting for relativistic effects in the analysis of pulsar signals. Design features of instrumentation used to achieve millisecond accuracy in the signal measurements are discussed. The accuracy of the data permits modeling the pulsar physical characteristics from the natural glitches in the emissions. Relativistic corrections are defined for adjusting for differences between the pulsar motion in its spacetime coordinate system relative to the terrestrial coordinate system, the earth's motion, and the gravitational potentials of solar system bodies. Modifications of the model to allow for a binary pulsar system are outlined, including treatment of the system as a point mass. Finally, a quadrupole model is presented for gravitational radiation and techniques are defined for using pulsars in the search for gravitational waves.

Description: In a class of grand unified theories containing SO(10), cosmologically significant axion and neutrino energy densities are obtainable naturally. To obtain large scale structure, both components of dark matter are considered to exist with comparable energy densities. To obtain large scale structure, inflationary and non-inflationary scenarios are considered, as well as scenarios with and without vacuum strings. It is shown that inflation may be compatible with recent observations of the mass density within galaxy clusters and superclusters, especially if strings are present.

Description: The existence of global exponential instability leading to chaos in plane (nonrigid) motions of the three-body system is demonstrated. In the presence of Newtonian attracting forces the trajectories of the three-body system in the configuration space will no longer be geodesic, and their convergence will depend on the geodesic curvature in addition to the Gaussian curvature. It is noted that the global exponential instability occurs in the n-body problem for n greater than 3 if at least two angular coordinates are disturbed, and that the chaotic instability is not necessarily accompanied by an exponential increase of the distance between the mass-points, but is associated with the exponential divergence of trajectories in the configuration space.

Description: The use of remote sensing to discriminate, measure, and map forest damage is evaluated. TM spectal coverage, a helicopter-mounted radiometer, and ground-based surveys were utilized to examine the responses of the spruces and firs of Camels Hump Mountain, Vermont to stresses, such as pollution and trace metals. The basic spectral properties of vegetation are described. Forest damage at the site was estimated as 11.8-76.0 percent for the spruces and 19-43.8 percent for the balsam firs. Shifts in the spectra of the conifers in particular in the near IR region are analyzed, and variations in the mesophyll cell anatomy and pigment content of the spruces and firs are investigated. The relations between canopy moisture and damage is studied. The TM data are compared to aircraft data and found to be well correlated.

Description: A method for calculating mean square velocity fluctuations, mean square temperature fluctuations, and convective flux for a turbulent rotating fluid with externally applied magnetic field is presented. A new spectral model of large scale turbulence is used which requires, as the sole ingredient, the growth rate of the instability generating the turbulence. Results are presented for the convective flux with rotation and magnetic field for a range of parameters of astrophysical interest. This new formula presented here can be viewed as an extension of the mixing length theory to include magnetic fields and rotation.

Here, the results of attempts to detect possible planetary nebula ejecta toward Sirius using data obtained by the IUE are presented. Based on these results and in the light of recent advances in understanding white-dwarf evolution, it is proposed that Sirius B underwent a recent thermonuclear runaway event triggered by a diffusion-induced CN reaction.

Description: It is shown here that an elevated rate of star formation may be responsible for burning out protogalaxies in the densest galaxy clusters, leading to the formation of candidate gravitational lenses and to an enhanced probability of close association of quasars in regions of apparently low galaxy density. Extreme tidal interactions occurring during the initial collapse of such clusters would stimulate the star formation and also could drive molecular clouds and stars onto radial orbits, fuelling massive black holes and leading to an enhanced frequency of occurrence of quasar pairs. It is argued that a fundamental bias exists against detecting luminous matter in the great galactic clusters.

Description: Conventional enhancements for the color display of multispectral images are based on independent contrast modifications or 'stretches' of three input images. This approach is not effective if the image channels are highly correlated or if the image histograms are strongly bimodal or more complex. Any of several procedures that tend to 'stretch' color saturation while leaving hue unchanged may better utilize the full range of colors for the display of image information. Two conceptually different enhancements are discussed: the 'decorrelation stretch', based on principal-component (PC) analysis, and the 'stretch' of 'hue' - 'saturation' - intensity (HSI) transformed data. The PC transformation in scene-dependent, but the HSI transformation is invariant. Examples of images enhanced by conventional linear stretches, decorrelation stretch, and by stretches of HSI transformed data are compared. Schematic variation diagrams or two- and three-dimensional histograms are used to illustrate the 'decorrelation stretch' method and the effect of the different enhancements.

Description: Normalized difference vegetation index data obtained from polar-orbiting meteorological satellites were used to compare the growing or rainy seasons of 1984 and 1985 for the Sahelian zone of Africa. A substantial difference was found between these two years, with 1985 generally having higher normalized difference vegetation index values indicating higher levels of primary production in 1985 than in 1984. 1 km data were compared for Senegal, Mali, Niger and Sudan, and 7 km data were compared for sub-Saharan Africa. The qualitative comparison of these data suggests the use of similar data to assist in centralized monitoring of rangeland conditions, to identify areas of deficiencies in primary production and provide synoptic information in support of regional drought monitoring.

Description: Red and near-infrared satellite data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer sensor have been processed over several days and combined to produce spatially continuous cloud-free imagery over large areas with sufficient temporal resolution to study green-vegetation dynamics. The technique minimizes cloud contamination, reduces directional reflectance and off-nadir viewing effects, minimizes sun-angle and shadow effects, and minimizes aerosol and water-vapor effects. The improvement is highly dependent on the state of the atmosphere, surface-cover type, and the viewing and illumination geometry of the sun, target and sensor. An example from southern Africa showed an increase of 40 percent from individual image values tothe final composite image. Limitations associated with the technique are discussed, and recommendations are given to improve this approach.

Description: Leaf structure and function are shown to result in distinctive variations in the absorption and reflection of solar radiation from plant canopies. The leaf properties that determine the radiation-interception characteristics of plant canopies are directly linked to photosynthesis, stomatal resistance and evapotranspiration and can be inferred from measurements of reflected solar energy. The effects of off-nadir viewing and atmospheric constituents, coupled with the need to measure changing surface conditions, emphasize the need for multitemporal measurements of reflected radiation if primary production is to be estimated.

Description: Of the four classical novae presently identified as having accurately known optical positions with counterparts in the IRAS Point Source Catalog, two correspond to events observed by IRAS within one year of their respective optical maxima; these are noted to be the first classical novae detected at IR wavelengths longer than 20 microns. The novae are Sgr 1982, Mus 1983, FH Ser (1970) and HR Del (1967), of which the latter two were also detected by IRAS. Mus 1983 is noted to have IR emission characteristics that are consistent with a free-free spectrum, as opposed to dust emission. The behavior of this and the Sgr 1982 nova is consistent with a previously suggested correlation between the inferred mass of heated dust and luminosity/speed class.

Description: Theoretical line profiles are presented that demonstrate why 100,000 spectral resolution and high S/N are needed to derive accurate column densities from spectral lines that lie close to the flat part of the curve of growth and may contain multiple velocity components. The aim of the Space Telescope high-resolution-spectrograph observing program is to obtain column densities in the hydrogen and deuterium Lyman alpha lines along a variety of lines of sight within and extending beyond the local cloudlet, in which the sun is located near an edge. The broad chromospheric Lyman alpha emission lines of late-type stars are used as background sources against which to measure the interstellar absorption features. Profiles of interstellar absorption features in Mg II and Fe II lines will be obtained to derive the broadening parameter and/or identify possible multiple velocity components in the lines of sight.

Description: Recent measurements in the IR of the energy emitted by Io suggest that if the observed emission is due to tidal dissipation in Io, then one should observe a very large secular acceleration of Io in its orbit. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the observational evidence which might be examined to verify that hypothesis. The authors have assembled the largest collection of eclipse observations extant and investigated the possibility of observing secular drifts in the period of Io. Preliminary results suggest that large tidal accelerations of Jupiter's satellites do not exist at the suggested magnitude and hence the heat flux measurements probably represent an episodic occurrence.

Description: Recent advances in infrared speckle interferometry reported by Ridgway, et al. (1986) have made possible the determination of the temperatures at the inner radius of certain dusty outflows. When combined with recent data on the thermal annealing and hydrous alteration rates of amorphous magnesium silicate grains, this information allows one to predict that grains heated to high temperatures around stars such as NML Cygnus will be more crystalline than will cooler grains around stars like IRC +10420. In 1985, Jura and Morris (1985) showed that water vapor can condense on previously nucleated refractory grains in some stellar outflows. Stochastic heating events might provide sufficient energy to produce hydrated silicates from orginally amorphous grains provided that the loss of water from such materials does not occur too rapidly. Observable consequences of both types of grain processing are discussed.

Description: Optical and near-infrared observations of comets are combined in a systematic study of the wavelength dependence of the scattering from cometary grains. The normalized rate of change of the reflectivity of cometary grains with respect to the wavelength of observations decreases as the wavelength increases. The observed wavelength dependence of the reflectivity gradient is consistent with an origin by scattering from micron-sized or larger, slightly absorbing spheres. The optically important comet grains are about an order of magnitude larger than the optically important interstellar grains. This size difference is a probable result of grain growth in the cloud from which the comets condensed. Grain properties differ so widely among the comets that any phase angle or heliocentric distance dependences of the continuum color are hidden.

Description: IRAS observations of the extreme hydrogen-deficient supergiant R CrB are presented and discussed. The star is surrounded by an enormous cool dust cloud which is tentatively identified as a fossil remnant of the hydrogen-rich envelope of the star. The angular extent of the emission corresponds to a linear extent of 8 pc, 20 times larger than the largest previously known shell around a late-type star. The radiating material is distributed very symmetrically over a wide range of radial distances from the star. The dust temperature is nearly constant throughout the extended shell. The total mass in the shell is about 0.3 solar mass. The ejection process appears to have occurred in a spherically symmetric fashion with a nearly constant mass loss rate and expansion velocity over a period of about 150,000 yr, terminating about 26,000 yr ago.

Description: The degree to which the GOES-VISSR infrared data can be used to infer area-averaged soil moisture is explored for a five-day case study period. Chosen variables are transformed and incorporated into a multiple linear regression. The actual observations, rather than a simplified model, are used to determine the relationship between soil moisture and GOES-IR radiance. It is shown that a depletion coefficient of 0.92 produces an index of ground truth which is best correlated with soil moisture as inferred from GOES thermal infrared data. When all individual daily soil estimates during the case study period are averaged at each point and compared to the average observed soil moisture, the data correlate at 0.85. This implies that the algorithm can distinguish at least four categories of soil moisture.

It is found that two-body resonances serve as a basis in the solution of the problem of the origin and evolution of the three-body Laplace resonance among the Galilean satellites of Jupiter. The unusual rotation state of Saturn's satellite Hyperion which is expected to tumble chaotically for an indefinite amount of time is discussed.

Description: Data from long-term pulse-timing observations of Cen X-3 are compiled and analyzed to determine the evolution of the orbital period, and the implications of the results for other massive X-ray binaries are discussed. Third-body effects, tidal effects, and mass-loss/transfer effects are considered as possible causes for the orbital-period decay observed in Cen X-3, and it is concluded that strong tidal coupling between the companion star and the orbital causes the period decay via orbital instability and/or mass loss. Applying these results to the Roche-lobe-overflow models of Savonije (1983), the evolutionary expansion rate of the Cen X-3 companion and the Roche-lobe shrinking rate are estimated as about 2 x 10 to the -7th/yr and about 1 x 10 to the -6th/yr, respectively, implying an X-ray lifetime of about 5000 yr. Estimates of the companion mass-change rate and period decay for Cen X-3 and four other objects are presented in a table.

Description: Thermal-infrared and visual images obtained simultaneously of comet Giacobini-Zinner on UT 1985 August 4.4 are presented. The 10.8-micron map, which spans several arc minutes with 8-arcsec resolution, is the first ground-based infrared image of a comet. Considerable spatial structure is evident in the map, including a curved dust tail consisting primarily of dust grains larger than 100 microns. The width of this large-grain tail implies that these grains depart the nucleus with velocities less than 3 m/s. The distribution of grain albedo is determined for the central 1 arcmin. It is speculated that an observed increase in the albedo by a factor of 2 with distance from the nucleus and prolonged radius vector results from the confinement to the orbital plane of large fluffy grains previously considered for GZ by others; the lower albedo of this dust could result from multiple internal scattering increasing the probability of absorption of incident light. It is estimated that dust was departing the nucleus at the rate of about 8 x 10 to the 5th g/s, comparable to that derived for many other comets.

Description: A number of type 1.8 and 1.9 Seyfert galaxies have been observed at the VLA in order to compare their properties with those of the other types of Seyfert galaxy. The observed types have radio luminosities in the range of 10 to the 39th-40.5th args/s, with the median near 10 to the 40th ergs/s. Most of these galaxies have radio sources with diameters of about 500 pc or less. The ratio of radio luminosity to featureless optical continuum luminosity in the Seyfert 1.8/12.9 galaxies and Seyfert 1.2/1.5 galaxies is intermediate between the values for Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies. The infrared-to-radio ratio decreases along the sequence from Seyfert 1 galaxies, through intermediate Seyfert galaxies, to Seyfert 2 galaxies. This systematic statistical difference in the ratio of two aspect-independent quantities implies that the differences among the Seyfert classes cannot be attributed solely to differences in viewing angle.

Description: The projections of leaf areas onto a horizontal plane and onto a vertical plane are examined for their utility in characterizing canopies for sunlight penetration (direct beam only) models. These projections exactly specify the penetration if the projections on the principal plane of the normals to the top surfaces of the leaves are in the same quadrant as the sun. Inferring the total leaf area from these projections (and therefore the penetration as a function of the total leaf area) is possible only with a large uncertainty (up to + or - 32 percent) because the projections are a specific measure of the total leaf area only if the leaf angle distribution is known. It is expected that this uncertainty could be reduced to more acceptable levels by making an approximate assessment of whether the zenith angle distribution is that of an extremophile canopy.

Description: Simultaneous co-located observations from two different orbits lead to several advantages (i.e., cross calibration of sensors and a wider range of solar-zenith and sensor look angles). The question was asked how many times per year (on the average) do the sub-satellite points of two satellites simultaneously come within D kilometers of each other? For the Space Station (altitude: 500 km, inclination: 28 deg) and a Sun synchronous satellite (altitude 705 km, inclination 98.21 deg) the answers are 16, 41 and 82 times per year for encounter distances D of 20, 50, and 100 km respectively. The relationship between encounters per year and distance D is linear. The answers were obtained in two ways: (1) a closed form statistical approach which led to a simple algebraic expression, and (2) a Monte Carlo type computer solution. The largest difference between the two solutions was less than 12 percent.
