    Notes: Measured Critical Oxygen Index values at 40°C for Opal polymethylmethacrylate (Perspex) sheet have been found to be remarkably dependent on the gas velocity within the column of the Hot Flammability Test Apparatus. Investigation of the atmosphere present in the column has indicated that the effect is almost solely attributable to varying quantities of ambient air entering the column as the flow rate is altered. A modification to the apparatus is proposed that successfully prevents this entrainment of air at normal testing flow rates.

    Notes: This paper reports a set of modeling studies that were undertaken to acquire a more detailed knowledge of combustion inhibition mechanisms. Mixtures of H2/O2/Ar reacting in the idealized perfectly stirred reactor were investigated. Three H2/O2 kinetic mechanisms were considered, differing from one another by the number of HO2 reactions included. Two physical inhibitors, Ar and N2, and one chemical inhibitor, HBr, were investigated. Additional parameters considered were pressure, equivalence ratio, inhibitor concentration and rate coefficient variation. The most effective inhibitor was HBr which acted chemically and caused substantial reduction in radical concentrations in the mixtures considered. The molecules Ar and N2 acted as physical diluents with N2, the more effective of the two due to its larger heat capacity.

    Notes: A test device consisting of an asbestos covered wooden cylinder was developed to study the burning behaviour of textiles relative to transmitted thermal energy and heat flux registered at 20 sensor points on the cylinder. In order to simulate a ‘line situation’ a reproducible procedure was used for igniting the fabrics at the hem edge by open flames. By linking known tolerance thresholds for second degree burn injuries in humans to the measured time patterns of transmitted thermal energy, the burning behaviour of a pure cotton twill, a 35/65% polyester-cotton twill and a 65/35% polyester-cotton twill was compared. All fabrics, which had no fire-retardant finishes, were also tested in combination with cotton underwear and in some of the experiments they were soaked with an inflammable solvent before ignited. In contrast to customary opinions it could be shown that in apparel burn accidents without inflammable solvents fabrics made from polyester-cotton blends are more advantageous with regard to the thermal energy transmitted to the skin of the wearer than fabrics made from cotton. Even when the burning clothes are soaked with an inflammable solvent, polyester-cotton blends are practically not more disadvantageous than 100% cotton fabrics.

    Notes: The characteristics of fire resistance test furnaces are examined. It is shown that the efficiency of a furnace, as measured in terms of the heat load it imposes on a test specimen, depends markedly on the size of the furnace and the nature of the furnace gas. Only with large furnaces heated by gases of high radiation potential (near-black gases) can the test results be regarded as meaningful and reproducible. Reling a defective furnace with a material of very low thermal inertia, though helpful, is unlikely to bring its performance up to the required level. Methods of determining the efficiency of test furnaces are outlined. The theorem of uniformity heat load is recognized as a succinct descriptor of fires with respect to their destructive potential. As such, it forms the basis for correlating real-world fires with standard test fires.

    Notes: This investigation examines the influence of sample dimensions on the Critical Oxygen Index, as determined on a Stanton Redcoft Hot Flammability Test Apparatus instrument. The materials used were polypropylene films in a range of thicknesses from 40 μm up to 300 μm and polymethylmethacrylate of 1600 μm thickness. Both the Critical Oxygen Index and the rate of spared of burn in the samples were determined. It is concluded that, for polypropylene, the sample dimensions were important in determining the Critical Oxygen Index and the rate of spread of burn and, further, that the ratio of the volume of material burned in unit time to the volume flow of oxygen in the same time remains constant, the value of the constant being 2.5 × 10 -4. For polymethlmethacrylate, in confirmation of the work of Fenimore and Jones, the sample dimensions were unimportant when investigating the Critical Oxygen Index, although the rate of burn by volume showed a significant increase with sample width. The volume ratio showed a corresponding increase.

    Notes: The thermal decomposition of a number of TDI- and MDI-based biscarbamates (model compounds for polyurethane foams) between 200°C and 1000°C showed that the urethane linkage undergoes an O-acyl fission at about 300°C to generate the free isocyanate and alcohol. In the case of the flexible foam analogues, the newly generated TDI reacts further to generate volatile polyureas, termed ‘yellow smoke’. The MDI residues generated in the decomposition of a rigid foams react to yield non-volatile polycarbodiimides. Both the yellow smokes and the polycarbodiimides decompose above 600°C to give a mixture of nitriles (including HCN) as well as a number of olefinic and aromatic compounds. The use of 13C labeling indicated that HCN and all the other nitriles generated during the high temperature decompositions originate in the thermal fission of the aromatic ring, the nitrile carbon being the 2-, 4- or 6- carbon of MDI.

    Notes: Gas chromatography using a column with a molecular sieve was applied to the determination of carbon monoxide in thermal degradation of polymeric materials. Attention was paid to the variance of individual determinations and conclusions were drawn regarding reproducibility of the processes studies.     Notes: Ignitability, one of the new fire test methods for building materials developing within the International Standards Organization is compared with the national fire test methods in Austria, Britain, France, Germany and Scandinavia. Different commercial wood-based panels have been tested, including fire retardant treated panels. The International Standards Organization ignitability test measures the time to ignition at radiation intensities from 1 to 5 Wm -2; it seems to be able to distinguish between different materials in an intelligible way. An evaluation of the results of this ignitability test is discussed. One possibility which is proposed here is to calculate the mean time to ignition at different fixed radiation intensities; such a mean value simplifies the evaluation and takes into account all the test data. Agreement with the national fire test methods is rather low, since they partly measure other fire parameters; agreement with the Austrian Schlyter method, which also evaluated ignitability, is somewhat better and agreement between the national fire test methods is relatively good for wood-based panels. This is consistent with earlier experience, which has shown that mainly new types of materials behave differently according to different national test methods.

    Notes: The results of applying the tentative, high temperature, International Standards Organization test methods DP 5925 Part 3, which was developed to measure smoke leakage of door assemblies during the course of a standard fire endurance test, are reported. A critical analysis reveals that the basic objective of the test method is limited in its utility in that fire scenarios in high-rise buildings may not be adequately simulated. Independent of this limitation, the analysis then identifies certain theoretical problems with the test method and its procedures. These lead to a conclusion that the test method is not generally reliable. An alternative test concept which appears to remove this limitation and all of its problems is described, and its development is advocated.

    Notes: One of the main hazards associated with the use of hydraulic fluids is the accidental release of hydraulic fluid near to a source of ignition. Several tests simulating this hazard have been developed but, in the opinion of the authors, none fulfils all the scriterla required of a flammability test. A new form of test has been developed. A test chamber is ventilated by a smooth flow of air; the hydraulic fluid under test is sprayed into the test chamber and ignited. The temperature rise in the gases leaving the stack and the radiation from the flame are measured at a specified time and from these measurements the heat output of the flame is estimated. Different fluids are then compared on the basis of their heat output values and data are presented in the paper for a variety of fluids.

    Notes: The first part of the paper describes briefly the calculation of the rate of heat release required to cause flashover in a compartment. It is possible from theory to suggest that the thermal feedback which controls the supply of gaseous fuel from a given area of combustibles may be generally less important than that which controls the extension of the area, although eigher can cause the rapid transition of flashover in the absence of the other. In the second part of the paper some implications for the testing of products and linings are explored and some suggestions are made for the way in which test data can be used to predict the behaviour of fires in rooms.     Notes: The trap-door problem with dry sand is treated in a statical analysis based upon model test kinematics. Integration of the equilibrium conditions along horizontal slices and introducing the mean value for the vertical stresses yields a differential equation for the trap-door force. Concerning the constitutive response of sand a statical model of a moving shear band is proposed as an internal boundary.     Notes: A novel finite element method has been proposed in this paper for the solution of seepage problems economically and accurately. In this method the governing equation and the prescribed boundary conditions are transformed so that they refer to a suitable logarithmically condensed ‘image’ space; the physical problem domain is also mapped into the image space. The transformed equation is then solved in the image space using standard finite elements, subject to the transformed boundary conditions. Because physical space is logarithmically condensed in the image space, the proposed method is capable of dealing with large or very large aspect ratio seepage problems economically and accurately.The validity of the method has been demonstrated by means of a number of examples including anisotropy and non-linearity. In all cases an excellent degree of accuracy was achieved, efficiently and economically.

    Notes: This paper examines the problem of the interaction between a loaded rigid circular foundation located at the surface of an isotropic elastic halfspace and an inclined concentrated anchor load which is located at a finite depth along the axis of symmetry. Such inclined loads can be induced by, for example, anchor regions supporting earth retaining structures. The loaded rigid circular foundation resting in smooth contact with the elastic soil mass experiences a displacement and a tilt due to the action of the inclined anchor load. The magnitude of the rotational settlement is evaluated in exact closed form.

    Notes: A simple algorithm (PILLR) for obtaining by two-dimensional analysis thee essential results that would be obtained in an actual three-dimensional finite element analysis of stress about mine pillars in flat-laying stratified rock is presented. A series of comparisons between the distributions of the local factor of safety calculated from the results of three-dimensional analysis and that obtained in the PILLR two-dimensional analyses for pillars of length/width ratio ranging from 0.33 to 8.0 shows the algorithm to be quite effective. The average vertical stress over the horizontal mid-plane of the pillar in the PILLR two-dimensional analyses is always within 0.5 per cent of the exact average; the local safety factor distribution is always within 10 per cent of the three-dimensional result. The ratio of the computer core x time product for the 2D' to 3D analyses is approimately 1/150. Additional improvements ard possible, although with the current PILLR algorithm 3D analyses require less than 1 minute for execution. This fact makes technically sound 3D mine pillar design analyses economically feasible on a routine basis.

    Notes: A numerical approach is presented for the ‘identification’ (or back calculation) of the earth pressure acting on embedded or retaining structures. The procedure is applicable to structures of any shape and requires a set of in situ measurements that may include displacements of points on the structure, values of concentrated forces, values of distributed loads at some locations, etc. Possible limiting values of the unknown loads, non-linear structural behaviour, varying accuracies of the input data are accounted for in the problem formulation. Depending upon the type of problem, the solution is reached by means of the unconstrained or constrained minimization of a suitably defined error function. As an example, the proposed approach is applied to the identification of the earth pressure acting on some typical geotechnical engineering structures.

    Notes: The quasi-static development of the force, pore pressure and displacement is obtained in the system of a circular elastic pile partially embedded in a saturated porous elastic soil, and loaded axially on the top. The porous elastic soil is governed by Biot's theory. The problem is decomposed into two systems, namely, an extended porous elastic half-space in the absence of the pile characterized by the material constants of the medium, and a fictitious pile represented by a Young's modulus equal to the difference between the Young's moduli of the real pile and the medium. The problem is found to be governed by a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Laplace transforms are applied to time functions involved, and Hankel transforms to the radial coordinate of which the origin is at the centre of the pile. Numerical solutions are obtained for final and initial solutions for various practical values of the parameters involved.

    Notes: A mathematical model has been developed to represent the physical phenomena that occur during the desiccation and one-dimensional consolidation of successive layers of hydraulically transported sediments as they are periodically deposited in a containment area. The governing boundary value problem, defined in terms of pore water pressures, consists of two field equations (one for the saturated domain and one for the unsaturated domain), a drainage boundary condition, an evapotranspiration boundary condition and a series of continuity conditions at the interfaces between different layers. A number of simplifying assumptions were made to render the field equations tractable, and a step-by-step numerical procedure was used to solve the linearized boundary value problem; at the end of each step, the errors introduced by the simplifying assumptions were corrected. Based on a thorough study of the convergence and stability conditions associated with the numerical approximation employed, a system of automatic corrections was incorporated into the computer program to reduce the time increment if stability problems originate during the solution. Based on the results of a parameter study, it was found that, although drainage conditions at the bottom of the, layer do exert some influence on the consolidation rate during deposition of the dredgings, the evapotranspiration potential renders this effect almost negligible when desiccation takes place at the surface. In contrast, transpiration plays an important, role on the consolidation rate during the early stages of desiccation, but its effect is reduced considerably as the water table approaches an equilibrium position.

    Notes: Perhaps the most widely used non-linear elastic soil behaviour law uses the hyperbolic functions to define tangent modulus and Poisson's ratio versus strain.1,2 This paper presents the results of analytical studies with the hyperbolic elastic finite element technique for the prediction of static earth pressures against a 10-story basement wall. Carefully performed laboratory tests of the backfill material and measurements of earth pressures during backfilling provided the basis fora, refinement of the current hyperbolic elastic method.     Notes: A layer of fill deposited in a soft wet condition will consolidate under its own weight and will commonly undergo comparatively large strains in the process. Neither of these aspects of behaviour can be modelled by traditional consolidation theories. In this paper, a consolidation model is developed from the theory proposed by Gibson et al.5 and is applied here to soil consolidation during and after soil deposition. No restriction is made on the magnitude of strain, so that the boundaries are not taken as being fixed in space, but are allowed to move as required by the process of consolidation. However, perhaps the more important aspect is the consideration of self-weight, since in many instances, the surface loading applied to soft, soils is small, and the majority of the compression of the layer occurs while the effective stresses reach equilibrium with the weight of the soil. Although some idealizations have to be made in assuming relationships between soil parameters, it is shown that the self weight effects in consolidation can be significant, and fundamental to an understanding of soft soil behaviour.

    Notes: Measurements are conducted with small samples in the laboratory and thus for all practical purposes the medium is macroscopically homogeneous. On the other hand, the uncertainties and the irregular changes in situ are macroscopic inhomogeneities. This work is an attempt to account for these stochastic changes in the elastic properties and density in a rational manner. The method used is that of Karal and Keller which is based on the use of the Green's function and neglect of third-order correlations. The resulting integral equations are solved by Laplace transform. The analysis indicates that the energy decay in the mean motion through random mode coupling introduces damping into even a purley'elastic medium and enhances the damping in a significant manner in a hysteretic viscoelastic medium. This consideration is important in relating the damping and dispersion characteristics of wave in situ to those measured in the laboratory. The formulation is extended to multilayer systems through transfer matrices and to arbitrary inputs by Fourier transform. Sample calculations are presented for single and multilayer systems to obtain response spectra and for the response to Gaussian and actual earthquake input motions.

    Notes: Elastic wave radiation from an equivalent cylindrical cavity due to an underground explosion is considered in detail. Both static and steady state dynamic finite element models are used to investigate the surface displacements due to the interaction of such wave radiation with both the free surface topography and stope formation. For a blast 430 m below the surface the models predict a negligible displacement effect due to the irregular topography but a significant effect due to the stope. A comparison between the models and a site experiment verified the cylindrical wave nature of the problem. Due to experimental uncertainties however it was difficult to clearly detect the surface displacement effect due to the large underground open stope.

    Notes: For non-linear dynamic problems, it has been recognized that an explicit time-integration method of approach is a very efficient way of solving the dynamic equations of motion. The numerical formulation and computation for such problems fall into the two general categories of finite elements and finite differences. Over the years, there have been many arguments between schools which adopt the finite element approach and those which adopt the finite difference approach. At one extreme, arguments areconcerned with the superiority of each approach and at the other end of the spectrum the arguments are about which approach is a subset of the other. The most common of these arguments are concerned with efficiency and accuracy. This publication addresses the accuracy issue with specific reference to explicit calculations in which the analysis domain is discretized into triangular or quadrilateral plane-strain elements. It concludes that if the same basic assumptions are made in the two approaches, they, will give identical answers for problems in this category.

    Notes: In this paper models are given for analysis and description of non-linear properties of joints, weak intercalations and interfaces in rock masses.Models for analysis consist of four parts, i.e. shear displacement model, normal deformation model, shear strength model and a relationship between unit shear stiffness and normal stress.The method of non-linear analysis given in this paper is based on an incremental procedure.The proposed method is available for different types of shear-displacement curves, and also adapted to the complicated process of loading-unloading-reloading.The results of computer simulation of an in-situ shear test obtained by this method gave a good fit to the measured data.The method of non-linear analysis of joint elements has been used in some practical rock engineering problems, and some interesting results and conclusions have been obtained.

    Notes: A five-step procedure involving mathematical formulation, identification and determination of parameters and verification is presented for development and selection of appropriate and reliable constitutive law(s) for geologic media. Comprehensive analyses are performed toward determination of an appropriate law for a (artificial) soil. The most suitable model is obtained by critical evaluation of four different plasticity models; here verification and comparisons of predictions with observations from laboratory tests, and with those from two boundary value problems are used as the basis of the selection. The model thus selected is found to be appropriate for applications to relevant practical problems.

An analytic solution using the theory of elasticity is developed for the settlement of the foundation and expressions for evaluating the moment and shear distributions across the foundation are given.     Notes: The theoretical aspects of mining in rock subject to tectonic stressing are still insufficiently clear. While rock mechanics uses Heim's rule and assumes the virgin stress to be generally lithostatic, earth science resorts to the folding theory and to different approaches in explaining geological phenomena.In this paper, a procedure is proposed for determining tectonic stresses in mining ground below a surface fold, the latter being assumed to originate through local buckling of the surface layer under tectonic action. For the purpose of this hypothesis, the concept of displacement along the interface of the layer and the surrounding incompetent rock is defined. In the case of elastic or viscous incompetent rock, the induced stress is obtainable by an integral equation approach.A numerical technique was developed accordingly for the zone of contact strain, and special attention is paid to interpretation of the singular integrals representing the boundary stress. Numerical results are presented as an illustration.

    Notes: Evidence for threshold gradients is reviewed. The consolidation problem, with threshold gradient, is properly formulated and solved numerically. An approximate analytical solution is also developed. The influence of a threshold gradient on the time rate of settlement is examined, and it is shown that by modifying the definition of the degree of consolidation a good approximation to the threshold gradient problem can be obtained directly from the Terzaghi solution. It is also shown that threshold gradients will have no influence on odometer testing and their effect is, therefore, to reduce the primary compression below that predicted from standard tests.

    Notes: Fire test methods cited in Australian regulations codes and specifications and the authorities promulgating them are reviewed. The pertinent regulations are generally drafted and administered by departments of the seven State governments, in some cases in reference to model codes developed by committees supported by the federal government to promote uniformity. The test methods, specifications and codes of practice are standardized by the Standards Association of Australia, an independent body with no statutory powers: the standards become mandatory when called up in legislation.     Notes: Much has been learned about fire from laboratory studies on fire gases, but the idea of using a laboratory toxicity test to rank or rate materials with respect to fire safety has not proved to be a fruitful concept. ‘Toxicity’ standards or specifications are not an effective defense against the threat of toxic fumes in fire for reasons which are fundamental to the nature of fire itself. As a matter of public policy on materials standards, by far the best way of reducing the threat of toxic fumes and all other fire threats is by control and regulation of those materials properties or performance aspects which permit the elimination or moderation of fire. Some of the concepts discussed in this paper run counter to commonly held assumptions, and they are put forth for the purpose of stimulating open public discussion on alternative approaches to improved decision-making in fire safety.

    Notes: Characteristics of smoke particulates generated from a coal fire in a ventilated model tunnel were investigated by laser optical transmission and by electron microscopy. Average particle diameter and mass concentration of the smoke were determined as a function of the temperature and stoichimoetry of the coal tunnel fire. Smoke particle sizes ranged from 0.2 to 0.9 μm, with larger particle sizes associated with higher smoke concentrations. These coal smoke data are relevant to several aspects of underground mine safety including the development and location of smoke detection instruments, the understanding of the fire (toxic fume) hazard, and the development of new fire protection and control techniques.

    Notes: A comparative approach to the determination of smoke emission from burning polymers has been attempted, and a number of combustion conditions and detection devices have been tried to choose a test method for measuring the smoke proiduction of materials. The combustion apparatus adopted is a hot-air quartz furnace that permits the measured by dynamic method from combustion of PAN, PVC and PVC mixed with some metal oxiders, have been compared with those obtained by an accumulation mode. For PVC the intensity of the light scattered from the evolving smoke has been measured as an alternative to smoke density.

    Notes: Small-scale qualitative tests were used to screen 185 inorganic powders for flame and inhibiting effects upon cellulose. Nearly half of the compounds inhibited smoldering. These were limited to inorganic salts whose anions include boron, phosphorus, sulfur or halogen. Over half the compounds inhibited flaming, and about one-third inhibited both flaming and smoldering. Differences were found between the actions of the powders and of similar retardants used in other forms and conditions. An appendix is included reporting the effects of alkali metal halides on the pyrolysis of cellulose. Implications of the results to the inhibitors are discussed.

    Notes: Experimental results on the rate of lateral flame spread and time for piloted ignition under an externally imposed radiant flux were analyzed with a simple theroretical model. The data were developed from a radiant panel apparatus that considers a wall mounted sample with a flux distribution \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ (\dot q_{\rm e} ^{\prime \prime } ) $\end{document} of 5 W cm-2 at the ignited end to 0.2 W cm-2 at the other end. It is shown that after an appropriate preheating time (flux exposure time before sample is ignited) the rate of flame spread (Vf) results can be correlated by \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ V_{\rm f} - {\textstyle{1 \over 2}} = C\left( {\dot q''_{{\rm o,ig}} - \dot q_{\rm e} ^{\prime \prime } } \right) $\end{document} where C is a material ‘constant’ and \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \dot q''{\rm }_{{\rm o,ig}} $\end{document} is minimum flux for piloted ignition - also a material (and configuration) constant. An extension of this model demonstrates that Vf can also be expressed in terms of an ‘ignition temperature’ and the surface temperature of the material. Both correlations are derivable from a single flame spread experiment. Results are presented for a number of typical wood and plastic materials.
