Notes: We have examined the vibrational noise originating from 1.3 K pumped helium chambers (1 K pots) that are continuously filled from the 4.2 K bath through an impedance. The noise can be largely eliminated by either heating the pot or by heating the impedance directly. Noise in 1 K pots has detrimental consequences for the operation of audio frequency torsional oscillators and for high precision thermometry. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Two workshops on cryogenic techniques were held as part of SYQFAS-95, one dealing with dilution refrigeration and SQUIDS, the other focused on closed-cycle cooling systems. Each consisted of several presentations by companies working in the field, one or two contributions by individuals, and some useful discussion and comment from the audience. This report is a brief summary of the material discussed in these two sessions.

Notes: Abstract We present a review of our pulsed NMR experiments in the A and B phases of superfluid3He, at pressures of 23 and 27 bar. We have measured the dipole frequency in3He-A, spin susceptibility in3He-B, and tip-angle-dependent frequency shifts in both phases. In general, we find excellent agreement with results by other workers. In3He-B, complex spin motions were observed involving long-lived free induction decays with a time-dependent precession frequency. Spin relaxation measurements for both3He-A and3He-B are discussed and compared with those of other workers. After driving the magnetization far from equilibrium, anomalous frequency shifts were found to persist in the A phase. We discuss a soliton-texture model by Bruinsma and Maki which accounts for these resonances.

Notes: Abstract We have designed and built a demagnetization stage to operate between 1.8K and 0.5K, a somewhat unusual temperature range for adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration. The lower bound in temperature is dictated by the thermal performance of our 3 He gas heat switch, the upper by NASA specifications. We intend this demagnetization stage to be the fast stage of a proposed two-stage continuously operating adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) which will operate between 1.8K and 50 mK. Here we discuss thermal, mechanical, magnetic and chemical considerations which led to novel features in our salt pill design.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the temperature dependence of two of the four magnetic-field perturbed NQR lines in indium. Our results indicate that the sign of the internal electric field gradient (EFG) is positive, in accord with the recent heat capacity measurements of the ISSP group and one recent theoretical prediction. We also discuss the implications of the sign of the EFG on the use of indium as an absolute thermometer below 1 mK.

Notes: Abstract We present direct measurements of the thermal resistance between a saturated dilute3He-4He solution and sintered silver powder between 5 and 150mK. Measurements obtained using different sinter geometries allow us to distinguish the contribution due to the thermal boundary resistance from that of the size-limited thermal resistance of the3He-4He solution within the pores of the sinter. The thermal boundary resistance per inverse unit volume is found to vary as T−3 and is insensitive to the sinter particle size.

Notes: Abstract The persistent failure of a previous welded copper demagnetization stage to reach temperatures significantly below 100 microkelvin caused us to replace the original structure. The new stage has been machined from a single ingot of moderately high purity (4 9's) polycrystalline copper, with a much more rigid cross-section. Heat treatment increased the RRR of the copper to 4000. The cryostat is now capable of maintaining temperatures below 50 microkelvin for over a week. However there appear to be gradients between the thermometer and the copper nuclei in the main field, which may be a factor of 5 or more colder. Much of the improved performance comes from the identification and removal of an existing heat leak. The vibrational heating is dramatically smaller than that of the old stage, inferred from the magnetic field dependence of the heat leak.

Notes: Abstract We describe new torsional oscillator experiments on 3 He confined in 98.2% open aerogel. In one, we monitored the superfluid fraction of pure 3 He at T 〈〈 T c while we gradually changed the sample pressure. The resulting change in density alters ξ 0 of the superfluid 3 He relative to the distribution of the length scales (correlations) of silica in the aerogel. We observed a T = 0 normal-to-super fluid transition at a pressure of about 6.5 bar, in marked contrast to the bulk where liquid 3 He is superfluid at all pressures. In the second experiment, we measured the temperature dependence of the 3 He ρ s at a pressure of 21.6 bar with different amounts of 4 He present in the cell. Adding 2-3% 4 He slightly increases both T c and ρ s . We found that for 4 He concentrations between 2% and 34%, the 3 He T c increases by a very small amount. However, ρ s , which for pure 3 He in aerogel at 0.5T c is no more than 11%, falls by another factor of 7. This behavior (constant T c , reduced ρ s ) is similar to that observed in granular superconducting films where the long-range order is controlled by phase coherence between adjacent grains.

Notes: Abstract We describe experiments on 3 He- 4 He mixtures in 98% open aerogel grown by cold-deposition (T≤80mK) of 4 He followed by the deposition of 3 He or alternatively by cooling down a homogenous mixture. The two approaches led to different 4 He film morphologies. We will also describe the observation of migration of 4 He from or toward the cell below 100 mK. This migration can lead to the exclusion of 4 He (other than the localized surface layers) for 4 He concentrations between 4% and 11% in the cell.

Notes: We present the results of measurements on a single crystal sample of scandium metal at temperatures down to 100 ΜK using nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). We find two regimes in the relaxation curves: an initial fast relaxation, followed by a slower relaxation consistent with the three exponential recovery expected for an I = 7/2 system in zero external magnetic field. The Korringa constant for this longer time relaxation in our sample is 90 +- 9 msec K−1. By observing deviations in the ratio of the intensities of adjacent nuclear spin transitions at the lowest attainable temperatures, we have been able to make a determination of the sign of the total electric field gradient present in the crystal. We find that the lowest energy state of the nuclear spin system corresponds to m I = +-7/2. A combination of these deviations and pulse NQR allows us to use this system as an absolute thermometer in the ΜKelvin regime.
