Beschreibung: Consciously repressed by the current dominating culture, in Italy and Europe in the late mediaeval and early modern age death was addressed with greater confidence and awareness, and sometimes even with serenity. The modes of dying and of conceiving death – and the varied and rich religious and civil rituals that accompanied it – reflected the values and the choices of rich and poor, of kings and peasants, merchants and soldiers, nobles and churchmen, men and women. Several decades after the major studies that opened the road to these strands of research in Italy too (Ariès, Tenenti), this book offers a series of penetrating and suggestive explorations of a fascinating and complex theme which no reader can consider extraneous.

Beschreibung: Ancient linguistic reflection in India was able to combine the analysis of Sanskrit with the awareness that the language through which this analysis is conducted (Sanskrit) is different from the object it examines. Although this language-tool finds its dimension in the artificial Sanskrit of the sütras - the aphorisms of Påñini's grammar - metalinguistic discourse is not restricted to specialized discourse: common speech abounds in metalinguistic notations. The present work focuses on the testimonies of the grammatical school of Pâininian origin, by trying to retrace the course by which metalanguage left the field of naive linguistics to become an object of the school.

Beschreibung: Winner of the World War One Historical Association’s 2021 Norman B. Tomlinson, Jr. Prize Global War, Global Catastrophe presents a history of the First World War as an all-consuming industrial war that forcibly reshaped the international environment and, with it, impacted the futures of all the world’s people. Narrated chronologically, and available open access, the authors identify key themes and moments that radicalized the war’s conduct and globalized its impact, affecting neutral and belligerent societies alike. These include Germany’s invasion of Belgium and Britain’s declaration of war in 1914, the expansion of economic warfare in 1915, anti-imperial resistance, the Russian revolutions of 1917 and the United States’ entry into the war. Each chapter explains how individuals, communities, nation-states and empires experienced, considered and behaved in relationship to the conflict as it evolved into a total global war. Above all, the book argues that only by integrating the history of neutral and subject communities can we fully understand what made the First World War such a globally transformative event. This book offers an accessible and readable overview of the major trajectories of the global history of the conflict. It offers an innovative history of the First World War and an important alternative to existing belligerent-centric studies. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.

Beschreibung: Deserts – vast, empty places where time appears to stand still. The very word conjures images of endless seas of sand, blistering heat and a virtual absence of life. However, deserts encompass a large variety of landscapes and life beyond our stereotypes. As well as magnificent Saharan dunes under blazing sun, the desert concept encompasses the intensely cold winters of the Gobi, the snow-covered expanse of Antarctica and the rock-strewn drylands of Pakistan. Deserts are environments in perpetual flux and home to peoples as diverse as their surroundings, peoples who grapple with a broad spectrum of cultural, political and environmental issues as they wrest livelihoods from marginal lands. The cultures, environments and histories of deserts, while fundamentally entangled, are rarely studied as part of a network. To bring different disciplines together, the 1st Oxford Interdisciplinary Deserts Conference in March 2010 brought together a wide range of researchers from backgrounds as varied as physics, history, archaeology anthropology, geology and geography. This volume draws on the diversity of papers presented to give an overview of current research in deserts and drylands. Readers are invited to explore the wide range of desert environments and peoples and the ever-evolving challenges they face.

Beschreibung: The present study analyzes the historical framework of contemporary Ethiopia. Particular attention is given to the economic and political events from the regime change in 1991 to the death of TPLF leader Meles Zenawi in 2012. In line with the Braudelian historical analysis three aspects will be taken into consideration: the Ethiopian Empire under Haile Selassie’s rule, the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974, with the rise to power of the Soviet-aligned Derg, and the ensuing civil war with the Maoist guerillas of the TPLF. In addition, the TPLF regime will be examined according to its three underlying concepts – revolutionary democracy, ethnic federalism, and developmental state – and defining theories – neo-patrimonialism, vanguard capitalism, and political marketplace.

Beschreibung: The fifteenth century is the century of hospital reforms, started in numerous Italian cities in order to overcome the inadequacies of traditional charitable practices of the Middle Ages and to face the social and health emergencies of that period with the help of different tools. Vicenza also participated in the reform process, restructuring the organisation of its care network, especially thanks to the intervention of the urban patriciate, which ruled the government of the major hospitals according to "managerial" criteria. In the fifteenth century the search for the bonum commune (common good) thus found expression in a new and rational way of understanding, financing and dispensing charity, conversing with public and private actors of the urban scene: a new but not so revolutionary way, in which ancient and recent feelings converged, such as Christian pietas, civic religiosity and protection of the social class’ status quo.

Beschreibung: The archeological site of Montcaret consists of the Pars urbana of a large Roman implantation. It is composed of two levels (Early and late roman Empires), themselves divided into several periods. The last period (5th century A.D.) offers the largest basilica room in the region, a triclinium, a pool and some very well preserved mosaics. The site is inhabited again in the Middle Ages, with a Romanesque church and a necropolis. The site has been studied in its diachronic and synchronic context and the Pars agraria close to the estate has deserved a special research. The artifacts found in the excavations (Roman and medieval coins, Roman and medieval, ceramics, architectural fragments, reliquary cross, sarcophagi, perinatal burials) have been the subject of specific studies, each of them carried out by specialists. They are presented in the museum space of the site which can be visited.

Beschreibung: This book presents the results of the survey conducted by the University of Florence, in the years 2008-2012, at the site and in the surrounding territory of Uşaklı Höyük on the central Anatolian plateau in Turkey. Geological, geomorphological, topographic and geophysical research have provided new information and data relating to the environment and the settlement landscape, as well as producing new maps of the area and indicating the presence of large buried buildings on the site. Analysis of the rich corpus of pottery collected from the surface indicates that the site and its territory were continuously settled from the late Early Bronze Age through the Iron Age and down to the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. A few fragments of cuneiform tablets with Hittite texts, a sealing with two impressions of a stamp seal, and pottery stamps illustrate the importance of Uşaklı Höyük and support the hypothesis of its identification with the town of Zippalanda, known from the Hittite sources as a seat of the cult of the Storm God.

Beschreibung: Botanist, zoologist, explorer and anthropologist: between the second half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth, Odoardo Beccari was all this and more. His fame continues to be linked primarily with the scientific expeditions to south-east Asia, and Borneo in particular, and his work on Palms, as well as his skill as a draughtsman and photographer. The material conserved in his personal archive is of fundamental importance for a reconstruction, not only of the his scientific career but also of his private life. This inventory finally provides us with the key to find our way around a very significant body of documents ranging from correspondence, notes and preparatory materials to manuscript drafts, travel journals, map sketches, drawings and photographs.

Beschreibung: While recent work has renewed our knowledge of execution sites and the internal layout of confinement places in the Middle Ages, the distribution of prison spaces and territories, and in particular the socio-spatial dynamics and logics of their location, have yet to be analyzed. These prison spaces are the subject of this book, written by historians, archaeologists and literary scholars. By prison space, we mean the space produced by one or more places of incarceration: the interior spaces of a prison in all their complexity and the exterior space, whether that of arrests, judicial executions or the immediate vicinity of the gaol. The fourteen essays deal with prison space at different scale (buildings, neighborhood, city or region) and use a wide variety of sources: judicial documents, urban regulations, prison rules, accounts, iconography, archaeological datas, literary texts, etc.

Beschreibung: Let's try to imagine a world where scientific illiteracy is the exception rather than the rule. That is a world of subjects who are, in the vast majority, informed and aware of the main ongoing scientific debates, and who are capable of critically and independently thinking about them. A world in which everyone could dispose of the resources to develop a thoughtful opinion on cloning techniques, genetically modified organisms, new anti-cancer therapies or even on the origin of life on Earth and the final destiny of the universe. If this world were possible, what would it look like? The scepticism about the feasibility of such a scenario is justified, however it is equally undeniable that during the twentieth century there have been such profound transformations in the relationship between science and public opinion as to make the question at least legitimate and worthy of an answer.

Beschreibung: In order to truly understand the emergence, endurance, and legacy of autocracy, this volume of engaging essays explores how autocratic power is acquired, exercised, and transferred or abruptly ended through the careers and politics of influential figures in more than 20 countries and six regions. The book looks at both traditional "hard" dictators, such as Hitler, Stalin, and Mao, and more modern "soft" or populist autocrats, who are in the process of transforming once fully democratic countries into autocratic states, including Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey, Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro, Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines, Narendra Modi in India, and Viktor Orbán in Hungary. The authors touch on a wide range of autocratic and dictatorial figures in the past and present, including present-day autocrats, such as Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, military leaders, and democratic leaders with authoritarian aspirations. They analyze the transition of selected autocrats from democratic or benign semi-democratic systems to harsher forms of autocracy, with either quite disastrous or more successful outcomes. An ideal reader for students and scholars, as well as the general public, interested in international affairs, leadership studies, contemporary history and politics, global studies, security studies, economics, psychology, and behavioral studies.

Beschreibung: The contributions collected in this volume are the result of the seminars organized by the Laboratory of Modern History during its ten-year activity (from 2003 to 2013) within the Department of Historical and Geographical Studies (now called SAGAS Department) of the University of Florence. Thanks to the participation of Italian and international colleagues, as well as young scholars, this annual cycle of seminars, entitled Temi e problemi della storia moderna (“Themes and problems of Modern History”), aims at encouraging the scientific community to discuss and reflect critically on topics of great historical importance. The theme of otherness is central in the Modern Age as well as in in the contemporary world, and it has been the subject of several seminars. The essays reconstruct significant moments and aspects of the relationships with “the other” in modern Europe: political models and cultural paradigms, cities of refuge and institutes of conversion, attitudes showing integration and/or exclusion of the Jews, Muslims, heretics and foreigners have been analysed in the volume according to the Laboratory’s 'pluralistic spirit’.

Beschreibung: This work outlines the phenomenon of conversions to Catholicism which took place in Florence between the 17th and 18th century, and starts by reconstructing the history of the House of Catechumens. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to a noblewoman from Florence’s bequest, the Institute offered hospitality to "infidels" of all origins, and the number of conversions increased considerably. Such liberality ended up causing a serious economic crisis, which the Lorraine Grand Dukes tried to solve in the 18th century by restricting the field of action to Tuscan subjects only. However, there was no lack of abuse and interference by clergymen, especially towards Jews.

Beschreibung: 1938 in Italy is marked by the introduction of the racial laws which ejected Jews from schools and universities, preceding similar measures in Germany. The aim of the author is to illustrate the debates in parliament around the Day of Memory and on holocaust denial before dealing with the events of 1938, in order to underline their contemporary significance and to interpret them as linked and not separable. After showing the progress that has been made in terms of historical research and the difficulties that the political world has experienced in taking this work into account, the volume examines the losses in qualitative terms in Italian university teaching and the huge difficulties encountered by professors who had lost their posts and struggled to return to their former positions. The case of Florence is studied closely within the framework of the transformations to university institutions which took place during the Fascist period. The indifference or the silence of the intellectuals, including Gentile, is underlined.

Beschreibung: Photography, Truth and Reconciliation examines the special place of photographs in contexts of truth and reconciliation. The moral and political implications of viewing photographs of human suffering, especially from a political and geographic distance, informs much of this body of work. The importance of acknowledging these contextual specificities is why Photography, Truth and Reconciliation is structured around five discrete national case studies: Argentina, South Africa, Canada, Australia and Cambodia. Photography’s ability to lend itself to different forms of truth means that this medium has been eagerly adopted in contexts of truth and reconciliation. Reconciliation and its relationships to photography, truth and history are similarly variable and contextually determined. In studies of transitional justice, there is little consensus about what reconciliation means and how it can be achieved. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.

Beschreibung: Sexual exploitation was and is a critical feature of enslavement. Across many different societies, slaves were considered to own neither their bodies nor their children, even if many struggled to resist. At the same time, paradoxes abound: for example, in some societies to bear the children of a master was a potential route to manumission for some women. Sex, Power, and Slavery is the first history of slavery and bondage to take sexuality seriously. Twenty-six authors from diverse scholarly backgrounds look at the vexed, traumatic intersections of the histories of slavery and of sexuality. They argue that such intersections mattered profoundly and, indeed, that slavery cannot be understood without adequate attention to sexuality. Sex, Power, and Slavery brings into conversation historians of the slave trade, art historians, and scholars of childhood and contemporary sex trafficking. The book merges work on the Atlantic world and the Indian Ocean world and enables rich comparisons and parallels between these diverse areas.  Contributors: David Brion Davis, Martin Klein, Richard Hellie, Abdul Sheriff, Griet Vankeerberghen, E. Beschreibung: Drawing on different disciplinary and historiographic traditions, the volume offers a series of summaries and thematic insights, functional to contextualising the peculiar case of the episcopate of Bobbio, founded in 1014 in the Piacenza Apennines as a development of the famous monastery of San Colombano. The considerable documentary source available thanks to the recent reorganization of the diocesan archives, which made it possible to illustrate the cathedral library as well, required an overall presentation and specific attention to the constitutive acts of the new institution. The deepening of the historical context, within which the subsequent diocesan story unfolds, was conducted in relationship with the monastery and with a selection of the nearby cities. The analysis of the settlement dynamics of the Bobbian center and of the structural developments of the church and of the episcopal complex are counterpointed by both in-depth analyses aimed at the organization of the territory, captured in its civil, religious, welfare articulations, and treatments of cultural and liturgical components that animate this Church.

Beschreibung: The reform agenda promoted by the late-nineteenth-century penal reformers variously described as advocates of ‘positivism’, ‘social defense’ or as members of the ‘modern’ or ‘sociological’ school of criminal law threatened to erode the boundary separating criminal justice from extra-judicial forms of social control. Focusing on the German case, this essay investigates the debates between Imperial Germany’s ‘modern’ and ‘classical’ schools of criminal law over two questions that posed particularly stark challenges to the dividing line between criminal justice and extra-judicial forms of state intervention: (1) the implications of determinism for the question of legal responsibility, and (2) the implications that making ‘dangerousness’ the key criterion for punishment had for the nature of criminal justice and the relationship of judicial and extra-judicial measures of intervention. After analyzing these debates, the essay examines the rapprochement between the modern and classical schools of criminal law around 1900, the emergence of compromise proposals at the biennial congresses (Juristentage) of German-speaking jurists from 1900 to 1906, and the draft codes produced by Imperial Germany’s official penal reform commissions from 1906 until 1914. The essay advances two central arguments. First, the classical school’s endorsement of the dual-track system for recidivists and post-prison detention in an asylum for mentally abnormal offenders demonstrates that the classical school had, in fact, accepted the modern school’s claim that mentally ‘habitual criminals’ as well as ‘mentally abnormal’ offenders posed serious threats to the social order that were not being sufficiently addressed by the existing legal system. Second, the conflict between the modern and classical schools was not about the question of whether measures based on an offender’s ‘dangerousness’ (rather than the offense committed) were warranted; the majority of the classical school agreed that such measures, including indefinite detention, were warranted. Instead, the conflict concerned the different, narrower question of whether such measures should be imposed as part of the criminal justice system or whether they should be imposed outside this system, as extra-judicial measures, that is, in the form of administrative, police, welfare or medical measures. Therefore, the debate between the two schools was mostly a debate over what form social defense measures should take. Whereas the modern school called for a broader vision of criminal justice in the service of protecting society against dangerous individuals, the classical school sought to keep criminal justice narrowly focused on offense-based retributive justice and therefore insisted that social-defense measures based on dangerousness be farmed out to non-judicial state agencies.

In order to facilitate the consultation, the work is organized into chapters and thematic sections, preceded by a brief explanatory note which gives an account of the criteria used to identify the listed works. The Introduction presents thoughts on the salient moments of the historiographical history at the heart of the contemporary discussion.

Only once in a while does a work emerge that takes the history of Trotskyism out of the realm of mythology and provides us with the elements we need to reconstruct the actual experience of Trotskyist militants in a given time and place. In this sense, this brief work has no other purpose than to provide a general overview of international experiences linked to Trotskyism in the second half of the 20th century in order to advance in a circumstantial understanding of its history and development.

Beschreibung: Ippolito II d’Este (1509-1572), cardinal and prince of Ferrara, played a crucial role in shaping the political and cultural connections between Italy and France. Seen by his contemporaries as staunchly ‘French’, his life rather followed a difficult balance between the political and spatial entities – Rome, Paris, and Ferrara – through which he continuously moved and from which he derived his power. Following his career as cardinal protector of the Valois crown, royal administrator of Siena on behalf of Henry II, and papal legate to France on the eve of the Wars of Religion, this book argues that Ippolito’s apparent diplomatic access ultimately weakened his family’s position in Italy and left it ill-equipped to compete in the changing politics of the peninsula.

On the twentieth anniversary of his death, Firenze University Press has decided to revive his lesson with a tribute that is not intended as a celebration, but rather as a pause for refection in which we can listen again to the words of this great writer, dissected and scrutinised the world over, generating germs of memory hopefully as universal as the mathematical and geometrical signs and the chemical formulas he so loved. Voci dal mondo per Primo Levi. Beschreibung: Rereading Travellers to the East aims to offer a new perspective on travel literature, the question of nation-building and the history of orientalism. Rereading Travellers focuses on the rereadings to which early modern travel literature about Asia has been subjected by different actors involved in the political, economic, cultural and intellectual life of post-unification Italy. The authors highlight how this literature has been reinterpreted and reused for political and ideological purposes in the context of the formation and reformation of collective identities, from the Risorgimento to the Fascist regime and the early republic. By showing the potential of the notion of rereading, the volume outlines a history of the political and cultural legacy of travel literature which goes well beyond Italy.

And what effect did their movement between languages, countries, religions and social spaces – whether enforced or voluntary – have on the ways in which people navigated questions of identity and belonging? Lives in Transit in Early Modern England is a work of interdisciplinary scholarship which examines how questions of mobility and transculturality were negotiated in practice in the early modern world. Its twenty-four case studies cover a wide range of figures from different walks of life and corners of the globe, ranging from ambassadors to Amazons, monarchs to missionaries, translators to theologians. Together, the essays in this volume provide an invaluable resource for people interested in questions of race, belonging, and human identity.

Beschreibung: This book is open access and available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by the European Research Council. Asking what does foreign occupation look like and how does occupation shape visual expression and cultures, this edited collection explores how the occupied and occupiers have responded to their circumstances through visual culture. Contributors study specific cases of foreign occupation from around the world and across the 20th century, discussing the similarities, links and points of contact which bring disparate examples of occupation into dialogue with one another. The intention is to illustrate how an emphasis on ‘the visual’ can help inform our understanding of occupation more broadly. Comprised of 12 core chapters and structured around 4 methodological and conceptual themes, this book adopts a consciously transcultural approach through which contributors examine the influence of specific cases, memories and legacies of occupation. Spanning Europe, Asia, the Middle East and elsewhere, the chapters also engage in a wider dialogue to reveal commonalities and points of comparison across political and temporal boundaries.

Beschreibung: The book analyses the history of the Jesuat congregation, highlighting the elements of connection and comparison with the social contexts, then describing the origin and the most ancient events of the female branch of the congregation, and the memory of the meeting between the "founder" of the Jesuats and the "foundress" of the Gesuate. The iconographic memory of the initiator of the congregation, Giovani Colombini, the collection of the lauds of the Jesuat Bianco da Siena, and the fortune of the 15th-century Life of Giovanni Colombini, written by Feo Belcari, are also investigated. Then the research reconstructs the constellation of groups, religious experiments and bearers of ideas and devotions that were linked to the Jesuats and, in particular, to the convents of Milan, Siena, Lucca, Venice and Rome and the sanctuaries managed by the congregation. The congregational sociability is analysed along its lines: the practice of work as pharmacists and the cultivation of spiritual friendships with prominent people such as the Countess of Guastalla, Lodovica Torelli. Finally, the erudite use of Colombini's Epistolario as a language text is studied. The volume closes with a documentary appendix on the Jesuat convent of Chiusi.

Beschreibung: The volume reconstructs the role of the "art objects" in the renewal of identity (social, political and cultural) of the Mannelli family, among the oldest families of the Florentine patriciate. During the 17th Century the main exponents adopted a lifestyle inspired by the Medici court, gradually dismantling, but at different times, the dress of the merchant. The analysis of the main town and countryside residences and of the displaying of the objects of art, conducted on a documentary basis and with the “display of art” critical tools, returns the fundamental stages of the renewal process and, together with numerous autonomous episodes of unpublished patronage and collecting, the emergence of common narrative strategies of historical and political identity through art objects.

Beschreibung: The volume is the result of the research project Claustra. Atlas of female spirituality. The book deals with the analysis of the religious landscape marked by the communities of the Poor Clares and Dominicans nuns. The investigation of the territorial structure of the various kingdoms takes place through five paths: knowledge of poorly studied areas in female monastic topography; understanding of foundational dynamics and the role of communities of religious mulieres; the dynamics of the urban layout and the processes of communication and action that created the monastic landscape; the importance of patronage and female sponsorship in foundational models and cultural promotion; the analysis of devotional practices and the material culture of communities in a functional, spatial and performative context.

Beschreibung: The German Chancery - since 1806 the Schleswig-Holstein Chancery, from 1816 on the Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburg Chancery - developed from the early 16th century, and acquired fixed institutional forms in the 17th century. Its territorial jurisdiction initially extended to the royal portions, from 1773 to the entire Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, and from 1816 additionally to the Duchy of Lauenburg. From 1667 to 1773, the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst were also part of the Chancellery's portfolio. As the highest and most important royal authority for the duchies with its seat in Copenhagen, the Chancellery had a comprehensive area of competence. It was responsible for the entire internal administration of the country, unless individual tasks were assigned to special administrative authorities, such as the Chamber of Pensions. In addition, the Chancellery was also responsible for the foreign affairs of the Danish kingdom until the Department of Foreign Affairs was established for this purpose in 1770. The records of the German Chancellery are of outstanding importance for research on both Schleswig-Holstein and Danish history. This special value of the Chancery Archives is the reason why they are divided between the Reich Archives in Copenhagen and the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives: Copenhagen holds the bulk of the older records before 1730, while the Landesarchiv holds the bulk of the records from 1730 onwards. The written records of the German Chancellery in the Landesarchiv presented in this finding aid are among the most important holdings from the period from the 16th to the mid-19th century that the Landesarchiv has available for research.

Beschreibung: What is the role of the humanities at the start of 21st century? In the last few decades, the various disciplines of the humanities (history, linguistics, literary studies, art history, media studies) have encountered a broad range of challenges, related to the future of print culture, to shifts in funding strategies, and to the changing contours of culture and society. Several publications have addressed these challenges as well as potential responses on a theoretical level. This coedited volume opts for a different strategy and presents accessible case studies that demonstrate what humanities scholars contribute to concrete and pressing social debates about topics including adoption, dementia, hacking, and conservation. These “engaged” forms of humanities research reveal the continued importance of thinking and rethinking the nature of art, culture, and public life.

Beschreibung: This work reconstructs the main national events in the time span between Silvio Berlusconi's arrival on the political scene in 1994 and the start of his second government in 2001. The aim of the volume is to answer some of the main questions which have characterized the public debate in Italy over the past twenty years. Did the transition from the First to the Second Republic really take place? What role did the leader of the party “Forza Italia” play in this process? Does the new political system represent an anomaly compared to Italy’s recent history? Answering these questions will make a clear reading of current political affairs easier.

Beschreibung: This groundbreaking collection explores the convergence of the spatial and digital turns through a suite of smartphone apps (Hidden Cities) that present research-led itineraries in early modern cities as public history. The Hidden Cities apps have expanded from an initial case example of Renaissance Florence to a further five historic European cities. This collection considers how the medium structures new methodologies for site-based historical research, while also providing a platform for public history experiences that go beyond typical heritage priorities. It also presents guidelines for user experience design that reconciles the interests of researchers and end users. A central section of the volume presents the underpinning original scholarship that shapes the locative app trails, illustrating how historical research can be translated into public-facing work. The final section examines how history, delivered in the format of geolocated apps, offers new opportunities for collaboration and innovation: from the creation of museums without walls, connecting objects in collections to their original settings, to informing decision-making in city tourism management. Hidden Cities is a valuable resource for upper-level undergraduates, postgraduates, and scholars across a variety of disciplines including urban history, public history, museum studies, art and architecture, and digital humanities.

Beschreibung: Yet another book on witches and witchcraft? Although numerous, studies on this phenomenon that had such a profound influence on the political, social and religious history of the late Middle Ages and the early modern age in Europe can never be enough. At this time the political regimes were actively involved in the witch hunts, not least the Catholic church which was intensely engaged in developing instruments of control aimed at governing and curbing dissent. The book is broken down into thematic sections – rules, treatises and trials, transmission /possession – which reflect the multiplicity of the scientific proposals that have emerged in recent years, and also represent a conscious preliminary orientation of possible readings. At centre stage of the witchcraft show are the witches and their judges, from the theologians and philosophers to the exorcists. As well as addressing actual events, the book also explores the nature of the beliefs and the way in which they were transmitted in the various social strata, and the phenomenon of diabolical possession which conveyed the message of the presence of the devil in the world.

Beschreibung: The purpose of this book is to explore the transformations in the functioning of power in the countryside of the kingdom of Italy over the fifty years at the turn of the 1100s, and more particularly the process of affirmation and crystallization of the rural lordship. The investigation develops through the reconstruction not only of the structures of power over men and space, and of the related social morphologies, but also of the political communication system at the local level. The outbreak of the civil wars connected with the “struggle for the Investitures", after 1080, translates into a clear reconfiguration of the socio-political matrix, transforming both the practices of local power, and the instruments of political communication and the related documentation. The Italian case offers in this sense a new perspective on the great and still open historiographic problem, of the "feudal revolution" in the European context.

Beschreibung: Other Orientalisms analyses various forms of knowledge about India through the circulation of people, ideas, knowledge, images and objects between Florence and Bombay. In the second half of the nineteenth century Florence became an important centre for studies on India, manifested in the organisation of exhibitions, museums, journals and international conferences. Inspired by the relationship between two Indianists – the Italian Angelo De Gubernatis, a teacher of Sanskrit in Florence and the Goan José Gerson da Cunha, a physician and historian in Bombay – this book discloses an India that emerged from different places, peopled by a multiplicity of voices. The institutional, intellectual and museum experience of Florentine orientalism, albeit peripheral, further enhances the debate on knowledge and colonial power that has engaged social and human sciences in recent decades.

Beschreibung: In a time, ours, in which historiography prefers to measure itself with witchcraft as a judicial phenomenon, or with the men who personally led the persecution, or even with the demonological treatises that greatly influenced witch hunters, this book focuses instead on the victims. Women accused of witchcraft are the protagonists of the trials initiated between the late Middle Ages and the early modern age: that was the time when the great witch hunt was unleashed in Europe. The profiles of the alleged witches, even if drawn by their judges, emerge from these pages in all their changeability and drama: women that are reluctant to plead guilty to unspoken crimes, marked by stubborn silence, surrendered to the full confession of every wickedness extorted by torture.

Beschreibung: Western democracy is currently under attack by a resurgent Russia, weaponizing new technologies and social media. How to respond? During the Cold War, the West fought off similar Soviet propaganda assaults with shortwave radio broadcasts. Founded in 1949, the US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty broadcast uncensored information to the Soviet republics in their own languages. About one-third of Soviet urban adults listened to Western radio. The broadcasts played a key role in ending the Cold War and eroding the communist empire. R. Eugene Parta was for many years the director of Soviet Area Audience Research at RFE/RL, charged among others with gathering listener feedback. In this book he relates a remarkable Cold War operation to assess the impact of Western radio broadcasts on Soviet listeners by using a novel survey research approach. Given the impossibility of interviewing Soviet citizens in their own country, it pioneered audacious interview methods in order to fly under the radar and talk to Soviets traveling abroad, ultimately creating a database of 51,000 interviews which offered unparalleled insights into the media habits and mindset of the Soviet public. By recounting how the “impossible” mission was carried out, Under the Radar also shows how the lessons of the past can help counter the threat from a once and current adversary.

Beschreibung: This is the second of two volumes examining some “original features” of late medieval Italy compared to the european reality of the time (the first volume of this collection was edited by Francesco Salvestrini). On this subject, two conferences have been held, whose proceedings have been published. The first conference, held in October 2000, tried to offer an account, in an introductory section, of the long-term environmental frameworks within which the path of Italian society is inscribed: the rural landscape and the framework of urban settlements, without forgetting, in one and in the another case, the legacy of the Roman world. The second conference, on the other hand - held in the autumn of 2002 - aimed to consider aspects of the history of culture and political ideologies, mentality, religious life, but also the history of techniques.

Beschreibung: This research focuses on the d’Este cardinals’ diplomatic and religious actions and on their role as mediators between Italy and France. The objective is to uncover the geopolitical foundations of their actions whilst highlighting the different scales thereof. The presence of Ippolito II and Luigi d’Este is studied both in terms of their material presence and their participation in the political stakes of the time. Finally, by examining their modus operandi on the international scene, this study argues that a Catholic identity is emerging which is not heterodox for which crossing the mountains leads to readjustments in manners of expressing and representing the Catholic faith.

Beschreibung: The historical experience of relations between Turkey and Russia has gone through different stages. The first attempts at diplomatic relations, which date back to the 15th century, have developed over time and have begun to determine the geopolitical balance of power in the region. At the same time, certain regions have gained importance in the context of Russia and Turkey relations (a context in which strategic interests have been an area of constant search for compromise solutions): Central Asia, the Balkan Peninsula, the Caucasus region and the Middle East. Along with this, the historical roots of Turkey lie in the Eurasian region among the Turkic peoples of Russia, and the confessional values of Orthodox culture originated in the Byzantine Empire. From this point of view, Russian-Turkish relations can be seen as are an intertwinement of a large number of sensitive issues and difficult compromise solutions. The regional mutual influence of Russia and Turkey seems to be a long process that developed during the period of the Ottoman and Russian Empires. At the stage of the formation of the Moscow state, Ivan the Third understood the importance of the participation of Russian merchants in the markets of Istanbul and sent a letter to the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid the Second on August 31, 1492, asking for free movement and trade. Having received a positive answer, Ivan the Third decided to send his ambassador to the Ottoman court in 1495, and thus diplomatic relations between İstanbul and Moscow began. Subsequently, the strengthening of the Russian Empire and its active participation in European politics led to a direct clash between the Ottoman Empire and Russia. Until the conflict of interest during the first World War, Russia and Turkey experienced the difficulties of a large multinational poly-confessional state in different ways, overflowing with ideas of constitutional reforms and democratic transformations. Following the end of First World War, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the change of state formation, i.e. the republic, once again pushed Soviet government and Turkey into a dialogue and consolidation efforts in the region: the Turkish War of Independence under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the straits questions, diplomatic friction with the West at the Lausanne Conference and the support of diplomats from Ankara by the Soviet delegation. The 20th century largely predetermined the foreign policy orientation of the Republic of Turkey. In 1952, Turkey and Greece became members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at the NATO Summit in Lisbon. As a result of the confrontation between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, Turkey and Russia been forced to build relations through the prism of the foreign policy agendas for a long time. The end of the 20th century and especially the beginning of the 21st century brought Russia to the level of the state and it began to build its foreign policy strategy based on national interest. As a result of V. V. Putin’s speech at the Munich conference on February 10, 2007, he set the task of creating a “multipolar world” as an objective. At the same time, Turkey continued to be an active participant in European politics, counting on fully-fledged integration into the European Union, but did not receive a specific answer and was forced to postpone the decision. In this regard, Turkey at a certain point made an independent decision to refuse to participate in the process of European integration and to develop its independent foreign policy strategy in the region. The catalyst for this decision was an unsuccessful coup attempt on July 15, 2016. Regional and global challenges caused by the Syrian crisis and confrontation of the international coalition in the Middle East have posed new challenges to Russian-Turkish relations. The attempts to consolidate the opinions and visions of specialists in various spheres of relations between Russia and Turkey relations have led the authors to highlight these aspects in regional interactions of various countries.

The episcopal contribution to the inclusion of the Lombard kingdom in the Carolingian social and political landscape is especially analyzed from the perspective of the cultural exchanges (of ideas, texts, and manuscripts) that bishops created or used to carry out their public and pastoral duties. Each paper focuses on a specific episcopal figure or area, reconstructing the scope and extent of the relationships of which they were the pivot. The aim is to provide as comprehensive a picture as possible of the cultural networks that crossed Carolingian Italy and the ways in which bishops shaped and made use of them.

Beschreibung: The feast represents the quintessence of time, distinguished from time in general by a potent intensity. The dynamics of secularisation have attenuated and blurred the boundaries between sacred and profane, to the point that we ask ourselves if it is still legitimate to distinguish between a religious and a profane feast, or whether it is not more proficuous to seek within the feast the sacred dimension of time. Modernity does not lead to the eclipse of the sacred, but rather to its transformation. This book addresses such issues, putting itself forward as a working tool for further study.

Beschreibung: What was the Roman Inquisition? How did inquisitors operate in the Italian society of the 16th and 17th century? In an attempt to answer these questions, the author analyses the inquisitors’ familia , the Court of Faith's large group of assistants. In the light of rich unpublished records, this research is the first to reconstruct the events around the Holy Office’s “staff”, which consisted of vicars, notaries, lawyers, consultants, policemen, bodyguards and many others. The publication deals with the issues related to these officers, their geographic distribution and the brotherhoods used for their classification. Following this, the analysis shifts to the privileges enjoyed by the members of these “families”, and the often heinous abuses they committed, demonstrating how the Inquisition became an element of social and moral disorder whenever its authority was questioned.

Beschreibung: During the Modern Age centuries, thousands of individuals were captured by pirates in the Mediterranean Sea and were enslaved in the land of the 'unfaithful: after being taken as prisoners, they were sold, forced to hard labour and rowing in the galleys or destined for redemption. Institutions, city judges and religious orders were involved in the redemption of Christians in the land of Islam, including the Mercedarians. This book reconstructs the history and activity of this Order and other protagonists of that activity in Italy and the Iberian Peninsula. After studying the books of redemption accounts sent to North Africa between the late 16th century and the early 18th century, the author shows how even religious men followed the orders of political power, and how that charitable activity ended up surrendering to economic and national interests.

Beschreibung: This publication concerns the history of the Tuscan Capuchin convents since their foundation in the 18th century, analysed through the transcription and critical edition of a manuscript written in 1704 by Filippo Bernardi da Firenze (1649-1721). It is a source of great interest both for considering the events happening in the convents, and more generally for the history of Tuscany itself. In fact, the manuscript collects numerous transcribed documents - dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century - whose originals are now partially lost. Through these testimonies it is possible to retrace the events of the Tuscan communities and obtain numerous information of a social, anthropological and cultural nature. The manuscript is preceded by a historical introduction to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and by the biography of Filippo da Firenze.

Beschreibung: The grand building complex in Tarraco known as the “Provincial Forum” is one of the most emblematic imperial-era monuments in the western Roman provinces. Based on the observation and detailed analysis of the archaeological evidence from an original perspective, this monograph proposes an investigation of the technical aspects and Roman building processes involved in the three main areas of the monument: the Worship Area, the Representation Square and the Circus. The construction of one of the key monuments in the Roman West was extensively influenced by local stone resources, in particular limestone, coming from the quarries near the colony. The use of this stone material have generated the search for architectural solutions, combination of material and technique, that have become the identifying characteristic not only of the monument, but also of the town’s image. The analysis of the construction process was key to understanding the ancient structures. It revealed the dynamic nature of their construction, the result of a plan that was constantly changing and adapting to external conditions or to the requirements of the construction site. It shows a process that reflects the existence of a plan in continuous evolution, a manifestation of the essence of the building site (cantiere di costruzione) and its architecture.

Beschreibung: In the nineteenth century, Latin America was home to the majority of the world's democratic republics. Many historians have dismissed these political experiments as corrupt pantomimes of governments of Western Europe and the United States. Challenging that perspective, James E. Sanders contends that Latin America in this period was a site of genuine political innovation and popular debate reflecting Latin Americans' visions of modernity. Drawing on archival sources in Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay, Sanders traces the circulation of political discourse and democratic practice among urban elites, rural peasants, European immigrants, slaves, and freed blacks to show how and why ideas of liberty, democracy, and universalism gained widespread purchase across the region, mobilizing political consciousness and solidarity among diverse constituencies. In doing so, Sanders reframes the locus and meaning of political and cultural modernity.

Beschreibung: Scarcity in the Modern World brings together world-renowned scholars to examine how concerns about the scarcity of environmental resources such as water, food, energy and materials have developed, and subsequently been managed, from the 18th to the 21st century. These multi-disciplinary contributions situate contemporary concerns about scarcity within their longer history, and address recent forecasts and debates surrounding the future scarcity of fossil fuels, renewable energy and water up to 2075. This book offers a fresh way of tackling the current challenge of meeting global needs in an increasingly resource-stressed environment. By bringing together scholars from a variety of academic disciplines, this volume provides an innovative multi-disciplinary perspective that corrects previous scholarship which has discussed scientific and cultural issues separately. In doing so, it recognizes that this challenge is complex and cannot be addressed by a single discipline, but requires a concerted effort to think about its political and social, as well as technical and economic dimensions. This volume is essential for all students and scholars of environmental and economic history.

Beschreibung: Twenty years after the colloquium at Châtillon-sur-Seine concerning the ephemeral Celtic principalities, which gave rise to lively discussions of the standard model applied to the princely seats of the 6th and 5th centuries BC, it is time to re-examine the question in light of the spectacular discoveries made since then. According to the then dominant opinion, the model proposed by Wolfgang Kimmig attributed too great a degree of political complexity to the princely communities and the contacts with the Greek and Etruscan city-states were considered too frequent and regular. The recent discoveries at Vix, the Heuneburg, Bourges, Ipf, or Lyon have led many researchers, sometimes the same, to overturn their initial critical stance and view the large princely seats as urban centres. Here, we attempt to review the information now available but too incompletely known, by cross-referencing the data at three levels of spatial and chronological resolution. These scales are, first, the microscopic level, which refers to the physical and chemical components of manufactured objects, and the biological elements of the animal and vegetal remains that have survived. Second, the mesoscopic scale, which applies to the sites in their local environment, just before, during, and after the social phenomenon under scrutiny. Finally, the macroscopic scale, which relates to the entire cultural phenomenon and to the surrounding communities with which relationships were established. This work provides the opportunity to examine the methods and theories applied to obtain, compare, and interpret the evidence, and to confront the arguments put forward.

Beschreibung: Propaganda has always played a key role in shaping attitudes during periods of conflict and the academic study of propaganda, commencing in earnest in 1915, has never really left us. We continue to want to understand propaganda’s inner-workings and, in doing so, to control and confine its influence. We remain anxious about pernicious information warfare campaigns, especially those that seemingly endanger liberal democracy or freedom of thought. What are the challenges, then, of studying propaganda studies in the twenty-first century? Much scholarship remains locked into the study of state-led campaigns, however an area of special concern in recent years has been the loss of official control over the basic instruments of mass communication. This has been seen in the rise of ‘fake news’ and the ability of non-state actors to influence political events. This volume presents the latest research in propaganda studies, featuring contributions from a range of leading scholars and covering the most cutting-edge scholarship in the study of propaganda from World War I to the present.

Beschreibung: The Maritime Silk Road foregrounds the numerous networks that have been woven across oceanic geographies, tying world regions together often far more extensively than land-based routes. On the strength of the new data which has emerged in the last two decades in the form of archaeological findings, as well as new techniques such as GIS modeling, the authors collectively demonstrate the existence of a very early global maritime trade. From architecture to cuisine, and language to clothing, evidence points to early connections both within Asia and between Asia and other continents—well before European explorations of the Global South. The human stories presented here offer insights into both the extent and limits of this global exchange, showing how goods and people traveled vast distances, how they were embedded in regional networks, and how local cultures were shaped as a result.

Beschreibung: Through the tales of a group of former activists of “Lotta continua”, an extra-parliamentary left-wing group, this work traces the cycle of mobilization which Italy went through during the Seventies, in search of the intersections between collective events and subjective experiences. The text focuses on two themes which are considered the tips of a controversial shared memory: political violence on one hand, and neo-feminism on the other. These two steps result fundamental in the process of subjectivation of individual men and women, and their effects can also be traced by observing the individual and collective outcomes of "demobilization".

Through repeated inspections and a long work of comparison, not only have the volumes kept at the institution of Kavála been catalogued, but the composition of the entire library has also been almost entirely reconstructed, identifying additional funds belonging to it. Furthermore, the research examines the implications useful for delineating both the cultural profile of the Institution and a particular historical phase for the methodological and content innovations introduced in the transmission of knowledge within the Islamic world.

Beschreibung: Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act of 1924 recodified the state’s long-standing racial hierarchy as a more rigid Black-white binary. Then, Virginia officials asserted that no Virginia Indians could be other than legally Black, given centuries of love and marriage across color lines. How indigenous peoples of Virginia resisted erasure and built their identities as Native Americans is the powerful story this book tells. Spanning a century of fraught history, Being Indigenous in Jim Crow Virginia describes the critical strategic work that tidewater Virginia Indians, descendants of the seventeenth-century Algonquian Powhatan chiefdom, undertook to sustain their Native identity in the face of deep racial hostility from segregationist officials, politicians, and institutions. Like other Southeastern Native groups living under Jim Crow regimes, tidewater Native groups and individuals fortified their communities by founding tribal organizations, churches, and schools; they displayed their Indianness in public performances; and they enlisted whites, including well-known ethnographers, to help them argue for their Native distinctness. Describing an arduous campaign marked by ingenuity, conviction, and perseverance, Laura J. Feller shows how these tidewater Native people drew on their shared histories as descendants of Powhatan peoples, and how they strengthened their bonds through living and marrying within clusters of Native Virginians, both on and off reservation lands. She also finds that, by at times excluding African Americans from Indian organizations and Native families, Virginian Indians themselves reinforced racial segregation while they built their own communities. Even as it paved the way to tribal recognition in Virginia, the tidewater Natives’ sustained efforts chronicled in this book demonstrate the fluidity, instability, and persistent destructive power of the construction of race in America.

Beschreibung: This open access book provides an analysis of human actors and their capacity to explore and conceptualise their own agency by being curious, gathering knowledge, and shaping identities in their travel reflections on Asia. Thus, the actors open windows across time to present a profound overview of diverse descriptions and constructions of Asia. It is demonstrated that international and transnational history contributes to and benefits from analyses of national and local contexts that in turn enrich our understanding of transcultural encounters and experiences across time. The book proposes an actor-centred contextual approach to travel writing to recount meaningful constructions of Asia’s physical, political and spiritual landscapes. It offers comparative reflections on the patterns of encounter across Eurasia, where from the late medieval period an idea of civilisation was transculturally shared yet also constantly questioned and reframed. Tailored for academic and public discussions alike, this volume will be invaluable for both scholars of Global History and interested audiences to stimulate further discussions on the nature of global encounters in Asia.

This volume is part of the subseries Studia Russica Helsingiensia et Tartuensia, XIV, and unites scholars from Estonia, Finland, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and Canada who belong to the tradition of the Tartu Lotman school. This collective monograph explores the development of national myth on the basis of a variety of materials from Russian culture, beginning from the Late Middle Ages and finishing with the Soviet epoch. The main part of the study is devoted to the Imperial period — the epoch during which the notion of nation arises. Analyzing the mechanisms used to construct national ideology, the authors especially stress the participation of literature and art in nation building: the role of the press, theatre, writers and their works in their dependence upon historical matters and political conjuncture.

Beschreibung: In this original study, Siobhán McIlvanney examines the beginnings of the women’s press in France. Figurations of the Feminine is the first work in English to assess the most significant publications which make up this diverse, yet critically neglected, medium. It traces the evolving representations of womanhood that appear over the first ninety years of women’s journals in France. McIlvanney’s insightful readings demonstrate that these journals are often characterised by a remarkable degree of ‘feminist’ content. This refutes the general conception of the women’s press as an idealised, hyper-feminised space inhabited by the intellectually idle – whether in the form of readers or writers – disseminating and legitimating a limited range of patriarchal stereotypes and idées reçues. Through textual analyses of different ‘generic’ subsections, whether the literary journal, the fashion magazine, the domestic press or more explicitly politicised outputs, Figurations of the Feminine challenges the critical commonplaces which have been applied to the women’s press since its genesis, both in France and elsewhere. It demonstrates the political richness of this medium and the privileged perspectives it gives us on female self-expression and on the everyday lives of French women from across the class spectrum during this key historical period.

Beschreibung: Rural lordship is one of the classic medieval themes of recent decades, but its specific developments of the late Middle Ages have long been neglected by research, especially engaged in considering other processes in these centuries, such as the construction of regional states, the economic dynamics, the urban riots. This volume, as part of a large research project coordinated by Sandro Carocci, intends to help fill this gap by offering a wide sample of cases, relating to very different areas of the Italian peninsula. Local realities are investigated here from a very specific perspective, that is, in their strictly political dimension: while taking into account the broad contexts (economic, settlement and social) in which the rural lordships are located, the main questions of this volume focus on forms of the lordly domain and its relations with the subjects, with the regional states and with the other lordly powers.

Three prospects are hereby taken onto account, in a time span of seven centuries (XII-XVIII): the consilia of Jurists, the training paths in universities (texts, literary genres, doctrines, teaching and teachers) and the canonical science.

Beschreibung: This volume reconstructs Carlo Livi (1823-1877)’s biography, focusing on his medical and psychiatric work and on his path as a man and intellectual who lived during the Italian Risorgimento. Livi was a key figure in Italian psychiatry, halfway between the therapeutic optimism of the early 19th century and the pessimism of post-Darwinian psychiatry, both in the practical aspects and in the theoretical elaboration. The study highlights how, in this case, the moral treatment applied by 19th century psychiatry throughout Europe is linked to the events of the Italian Risorgimento. The moralizing and educational request, as well as the anthropological study of the human being, were aimed at the sick, the insane, at children, at criminals and the Italian people in order to carry out a national and secular project of social regeneration in Italy.

Beschreibung: The Creighton Century, 1907–2007 offers a selection of ten lectures from the first 100 years of the University of London’s prestigious Creighton Lecture series. Each of the chosen lectures, delivered between 1913 and 2004, is introduced and set in context by a historian of the modern-day University. The collection also includes, and is introduced by, Robert Evans’s 2007 centenary lecture, ‘The Creighton century: British historians and Europe, 1907–2007’. This volume provides a fascinating insight into the development of the discipline of history over the twentieth and early twenty-first century, revealing some significant changes in approach and emphasis as well as some surprising continuities. The Creighton Century is an invaluable guide to students of historiography, and a chance to revisit some of the great lectures from the series, including those by R. H. Tawney, Lucy Sutherland, Donald Coleman, Eric Hobsbawm and Keith Thomas, published here with commentaries by Virginia Berridge, Justin Champion, Julian Hoppit and Jinty Nelson among others. First published in 2009, The Creighton Century is now reissued as an open access edition by the University of London Press. This edition includes a new joint foreword by the volume’s editor, David Bates, and the current director of the Institute of Historical Research, Jo Fox.

Beschreibung: Historicizing both emotions and politics, this open access book argues that the historical work of emotion is most clearly understood in terms of the dynamics of institutionalization. This is shown in twelve case studies that focus on decisive moments in European and US history from 1800 until today. Each case study clarifies how emotions were central to people’s political engagement and its effects. The sources range from parliamentary buildings and social movements, to images and speeches of presidents, from fascist cemeteries to the International Criminal Court. Both the timeframe and the geographical focus have been chosen to highlight the increasingly participatory character of nineteenth- and twentieth-century politics, which is inconceivable without the work of emotions.

Beschreibung: Within Seneca’s prose, using a long-codified terminology, it is possible to identify a substratum which can be defined as diatribe. This volume aims at making up for the lack of a modern ensemble work on the cynical-stoic diatribe in Seneca’s philosophy, analysing its features, influences and mediations. In response to a previous, almost purely compilatory, though systematic critical approach, this work offers an updated examination and contextualization of the individual stylistic elements bearing a seal of alleged 'diatribism'. This volume reconstructs the relationship, which is here deemed as 'complex’, between the diatribe and Seneca’s prose, while pursuing a research ideal which could combine moralistic contents and stylistic forms, philosophical preaching and rhetorical construction. Not least, the work aims at taking into account the extent to which the chronology of Seneca’s works can be reconstructed. Among the fundamental mediations, it is possible to identify the teaching of Seneca’s masters (the School of the Sextii and Attalus), the preaching of the Cynic philosopher Demetrius and Horace’s poetry.

Beschreibung: The present book investigates the social and religious history of the Portuguese-Jewish community of Hamburg during what may have been the most important period of its history - the second half of the seventeenth century. The political and economic rise of this small but influential community of New Christian bankers and merchants is analysed against the backdrop of its institutional dynamics, in an overall perspective never before conceived. The political, religious, economic, legal, charitable and disciplinary history of the community is thus explored through the analysis of the protocol books of the Portuguese Nation of Hamburg, written between 1652 and 1682. This is the intimate and fascinating journey of their everyday lives, hopes and challenges, as brought to us by their leaders.

Beschreibung: The subject of this work is the morphosyntactic analysis of a corpus of Latin documentary papers which were written in the centre and the north of the Italian peninsula between the 7th and the 8th century. The study focuses on the competition, in the nominal phrase, between synthetic and analytical encoding of the dependent name, which is the result of the grammaticalization process of the phrase starting by the preposition “de”, which in the Romance phase replaced the genitive case. This change is interpreted on a semantic basis, making use of the functional domain of possession. The volume also analyses nominal morphology which, although characterized by polymorphism and inconsistency, manifests phenomena such as the levelling of random oppositions and the reconstruction of inflectional paradigms, two inverse processes which find their cause in the principle of animacy.

Beschreibung: Is the celebrated elegance of Cycladic marble figurines an effect their Early Bronze Age producers intended? Can one adequately appreciate an Assyrian regal statue described by a cuneiform inscription as beautiful? What to make of the apparent aesthetic richness of the traditional cultures of Melanesia, which, however, engage in virtually no recognizable aesthetic discourse? Questions such as these have been formulated and discussed by scholars of remote cultures against the backdrop of a general scepticism about the prospects of escaping the conditioning of one's own aesthetic culture and attuning to the norms of a remote one. This book makes a radical move: it treats the remote observers lack of aesthetic insight not as a hindrance to aesthetic analysis, but as a condition requiring an aesthetic theory that would make room for an aesthetic analysis independent of the model of competent aesthetic judgement or appreciation. Objects of Authority represents a rare effort at bringing together methods and concepts that are often addressed by separate disciplines. It will appeal to scholars and advanced students working on philosophical, art-historical, and anthropological theories of visual art and material culture.

Beschreibung: As in a journey back in time, the stages of the first tournées of Italian actors in Russia in the 18th Century are retraced. By studying the translations of comedies and musical interludes, staged in St. Petersburg from 1731 to 1738, the practices of the first Italians who trod the stages of Tsarina Anna Ioannovna are rediscovered. Through the translation of the repertoire that has come down to us, the author reconstructs the traces of the Commedia dell'Arte and of the life and works of a handful of interpreters ready to face dangerous journeys in order to obtain gains and honors. The research, conducted on printed documents and primary archival sources, also based on the previous studies of Starikova and Ferrazzi, devotes particular attention to the biographies of the interpreters.

Beschreibung: During the Ancient Greek and Roman eras, participation in political communities at the local level, and assertion of belonging to these communities, were among the fundamental principles and values on which societies would rely. For that reason, citizenship and democracy are generally considered as concepts typical of the political experience of Classical Antiquity. These concepts of citizenship and democracy are often seen as inconsistent with the political, social, and ideological context of the late and post-Roman world. As a result, scholarship has largely overlooked participation in local political communities when it comes to the period between the disintegration of the Classical model of local citizenship in the later Roman Empire and the emergence of ‘pre-communal’ entities in Northern Italy from the ninth century onwards. By reassessing the period c. 300-1000 ce through the concepts of civic identity and civic participation, this volume will address both the impact of Classical heritage with regard to civic identities in the political experiences of the late and post-Roman world, and the rephrasing of new forms of social and political partnership according to ethnic or religious criteria in the early Middle Ages. Starting from the earlier imperial background, the fourteen chapters examine the ways in which people shared identity and gave shape to their communal life, as well as the role played by the people in local government in the later Roman Empire, the Germanic kingdoms, Byzantium, the early Islamic world, and the early medieval West. By focusing on the post-Classical, late antique, and early medieval periods, this volume intends to be an innovative contribution to the general history of citizenship and democracy.

Beschreibung: The administration of customs and commercial affairs in Denmark and the Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and (since 1816) Lauenburg has been the responsibility of a number of authorities at the central administrative level: Chamber of Rents in Copenhagen (1660 to 1848), General Country Economics and Commerce College ("General-Landes-Ökonomie- und Kommerzkollegium") (from 1735), West Indo-Guinean Chamber of Rents and General Customs (from 1760), Directorate of Upper Tax in Copenhagen in 1762 (from 1778 Directorate of State Balance and Upper Tax), 1782), unification of the General Country Economics and Commerce College and the West Indo-Guinean Retirement and General Customs Chamber ("Rente- und Generalzollkammer") to the Generalzollkammer- und Kommerzkollegium (1816). With the introduction of the Ministerial Constitution in Denmark in 1848, the activities of the General Chamber of Customs and Commerce ceased. Its responsibility for customs was transferred to the newly established Ministry of Finance. Initially, however, this administrative restructuring only affected the Kingdom of Denmark. With the outbreak of the survey in March 1848, the duchies had their own customs offices under the respective survey authorities. After the end of the survey in 1851, the duchies in Denmark were also given their own ministries in accordance with the reform. However, their powers in customs were transferred to the Ministry of Finance as early as 1852 and finally changed to the newly established Ministry for the Common Internal Affairs of the Monarchy in 1856, only to be transferred back to the Ministry of Finance after its abolition in 1858. The latter, in turn, had the customs system administered by the Directorate General of Customs, set up in 1855 and subordinate to the Ministry. The present register of findings lists only a very small part of the tradition of the supreme customs and commercial authorities responsible for the Kingdom of Denmark and the duchies. The main body of the records of the authorities listed in the finding bookcan be found in the Danish Imperial Archives in Copenhagen

Beschreibung: Tens of thousands of Italian civilians perished in the Allied bombing raids of World War II. More of them died after the Armistice of September 1943 than before, when the air attacks were intended to induce Italy’s surrender. Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy, 1940–1945 addresses this seeming paradox, by examining the views of Allied political and military leaders, Allied air crews, and Italians on the ground. It tells the stories of a little-known diplomat (Myron Charles Taylor), military strategist (Solly Zuckerman), resistance fighter (Aldo Quaranta), and peace activist (Vera Brittain) – architects and opponents of the bombing strategies. It describes the fate of ordinary civilians, drawing on a wealth of local and digital archival sources, memoir accounts, novels, and films, including Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 and John Huston’s The Battle of San Pietro. The book will be of interest to readers concerned about the ethical, legal, and human dimensions of bombing and its effects on civilians, to students of military strategy and Italian history, and to World War II buffs. They will benefit from a people-focused history that draws on a range of eclectic and rarely used sources in English and Italian.

Beschreibung: Unfinished work or interrupted work… It is difficult to find a definition, to identify the theme, to distinguish chance from intentionality. Few 'genres' and / or variations express as the 'unfinished' the same need for what is external to the work and which somehow completes it, bringing the work in a privileged position to create a harmony with our restless modernity. No wonder that in literature, in addition to what has been brutally interrupted, the letters, the diaries, the chronicles of disease and suffering are naturally suspended works. No wonder either that incompleteness accompanies the writings referring to unsolved issues, hidden traumas, silent melancholy. Dictated by choice or by distinct degrees of incapacity, the temptation of the unfinished pursues, urges, deludes its author... The private writings, the sketches, the projects, the papers testify the path necessary for the work to develop and conquer its shape. This book is rich and suggestive and has been conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi. Like its very object, the work is drafted in the perspective of the unfinished and questions some of the many possible examples, along a diachronic arc that goes to literature at figurative arts, theatre, cinema: from Leonardo to Blake, from Ariosto to Stendhal, from Dossi to Gadda, from Kafka to Borges, from Sarraute to Morante, from unknown writers affected by 'cancroregina' to the last Pirandello staged by Tiezzi, up to Fellini of the impossible Mastorna ... At the centre of the volume the readers will find a section with the typescript pages and the unpublished notebooks of / for the work La scelta by Giuseppe Dessí. They lead to the limits of white space, where the chambre claire fixes what is hidden beyond the writing with few, rarefied signs.
