    Description: From 12 radiolarian-rich claystone samples of the DSDP-Leg 25, Site 249, situated in the western Indian Ocean southwest of Madagascar 4 species of agglutinated and 38 species of calcareous benthonic foraminifera are described, 13 of them in open nomenclature. As a lot of Valanginian species and Gavelinella barremiana occur in the foraminiferal faunas described here a Valanginian-Hauterivian age is assigned to them. These microfaunas investigated here yield some index species characteristic in the Lower Cretaceous deposits of Northern Germany and also from the near-by Madagascar. Nodosariids dominate in a striking way with 36 species, especially of Astacolus, Citharina, Lenticulina, Lingulina, Marginulinopsis, Nodosaria, Saracenaria, and Vaginulina. Important Neocomian species well-known from other DSDP sites, namely Praedorothia ouachensis (SIGAL) and planktonic foraminifers, are missing. The microfaunas of Site 249 have to be derived from shelf areas.

    Description: The genus Hinia is divided in 4 subgenera; other subgenera are not represented in the area studied. It was possible to find criteria for a better discrimination of the highly variable species H. (Hinia) schlotheimi and H. (Hinia) turbinella. The species "fuchsi" has been placed in the synonymy of H. (Hinia) turbinella. The species H. (Hinia) schlotheimi (BEYRICH) and H. (Telasco) schroederi (KAUTSKY) have been united under the name H. (Hinia) schlotheimi. The easily distinguishable species H. (Tritonella) tenuistriata and H. (Hinia) sulcata belong to two different genera. H. (Tritonella) cimbrica andersoni of the Viol- and Katzheide-Beds (Reinbek-stage) is separable from the population found in the Hemmoor-stage, it turned out to be a valuable guide subspecies for the Reinbek-stage. The species H. (Tritonella) serraticosta, H. (Tritonella) catulli, H. (Hinia) holsatica, and H. (Telasco) syltensis are all similar in respect to shape and ornamentation. Criteria have been found for a better discrimination of these species. The species contabulata, effusa and seminodifera described by SPEYER (1864), turned out to be contogenetic stages of H. (Tritonella) pygmaea. H. (Tritonella) cavata, previously described from the Tertiary of the North sea area, was proven to be absent from the area investigated. The forms described under that name, belong to H. (Tritonella) woodwardi.

    Description: Deep sea manganese nodules from the Central Pacific Basin are mainly composed of 10Å manganite and d-MnO2 Two zones equivalent to the minerals are evidently distinguishable according to their optical properties. Microscopic and microprobe analyses revealed quite different chemical compositions and textnral characteristics of the two zones. These different feature of the two zones of nodules suggest the different conditions under which they were formed. Concentrations of 11 metal elements in the zones and inter-element relationships show that the 10Å manganite zone is a monomineralic oxide phase containing a large amount of manganese and minor amounts of useful metals, and that the d-MnO2 zone which is apparently homogeneous under the microscope is a mixture of three or more different minerals. The chemical characteristics of the two zones can explain the variation of bulk composition of deep sea manganese nodules and inter-element relationships previously reported, suggesting that the bulk compositions are attributable to the mixing of the 10Å manganite and d-MnO2 zones in various ratios. Characteristic morphology and surface structure of some types of nodules and their relationships to chemistry are also attribut able to the textural and chemical features of the above mentioned two phases. Synthesis of hydrated manganese oxides was carried out in terms of the formation of manganese minerals in the ocean. The primary product which is an equivalent to d-MnO2 was precipitated from Mn 2+ -bearing alkaline solution under oxigenated condition by air bubbling at one atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The primary product was converted to a l0Å manganite equivalent by contact with Ni 2+, Cu 2++ or CO2+ chloride solutions. This reaction caused the decrease of Ni2+, Cu2+ or CO2+ concentrations and the increase of Na+ concentration in the solution. The reaction also proceeded even in diluted solutions of nickel chloride and resulted in a complete removal of Ni2+ from the solution. Reaction products were exclusively 10Å manganite equivalents and their chemical compositions were very similar to those of 10Å manganite in manganese nodules. The maximum value of(Cu+Ni+Co)/Mn ratio of 10Å manganite zones in manganese nodules is 0.16, and the Ni/Mn ratio of synthetic 10Å manganite ranges from 0.15 to 0.18 with the average of 0.167.

    Description: Twenty-four manganese nodules from the surface of the sea floor and fifteen buried nodules were studied. With three exceptions, the nodules were collected from the area covered by Valdivia Cruise VA 04 some 1200 nautical miles southeast of Hawaii. Age determinations were made using the ionium method. In order to get a true reproduction of the activity distribution in the nodules, they were cut in half and placed for one month on nuclear emulsion plates to determine the alpha-activity of the ionium and its daughter products. Special methods of counting the alpha-tracks resolution to depth intervals of 0.125 mm. For the first time it was possible to resolve zones of rapid growth (impulse growth) with growth rates, s 〉 50 mm/106 yr and interruptions in growth. With few exceptions the average rate of growth of all nodules was surprisingly uniform at 4-9 mm/10 yr. No growth could be recognized radioactively in the buried nodules. One exceptional nodule has had recent impulse growth and, in the material formed, the ionium is not yet in equilibrium with its daughter products. Individual layers in one nodule from the Indian Ocean could be dated and an average time interval of t = 2600±400 yr was necessary to form one layer. The alternation between iron and manganese-rich parts of the nodules was made visible by colour differences resulting from special treatment of cut surfaces with HCl vapour. The zones of slow growth of one nodule are relatively enriched in iron. Earlier attempts to find paleomagnetic reversals in manganese nodules have been continued. Despite considerable improvement in areal resolution, reversals were not detected in the nodules studied. Comparisons of the surface structure, microstructure in section and the radiometric dating show that there are erosion surfaces and growth surfaces on the outer surfaces of the manganese nodules. The formation of cracks in the nodules was studied in particular. The model of age-dependent nodule shrinkage and cracking surprisingly indicates that the nodules break after exceeding a certain age and/or size. Consequently, the breaking apart of manganese nodules is a continuous process not of catastrophic or discontinuous origin. The microstructure of the nodules exhibits differences in the mechanism of accretion and accretion rate of material, shortly referred to as accretion form. Thus non-directional growth inside the nodules as well as a directional growth may be observed. Those nodules with large accretion forms have grown faster than smaller ones. Consequently, parallel layers indicate slow growth. The upper surfaces of the nodules, protruding into the bottom water appear to be more prone to growth disturbances than the lower surfaces, immersed in the sediment. Features of some nodules show, that as they develop, they neither turned nor rolled. Yet unknown is the mechanism that keeps the nodules at the surface during continuous sedimentation. All in all, the nodules remain the objects of their own distinctive problems. The hope of using them as a kind of history book still seems to be very remote.

    Description: From a structural and morphological point of view, the continental margin of southwestern Africa is a middle-aged "pull-apart" or "passive-type" margin which was initially created during the breakup of the supercontinent of Gondwanaland in the Mesozoic. The most important objective of the Leg 40 expedition was the attainment of strata laid down when the newly formed ocean was very young and only a few hundred kilometers wide. Site 361 was drilled at the fall of continental platform into the Cape Basin, to a sub-sea floor depth of 1314 meters and yielded sediments that range in age from upper Eocene to lower Aptian and possibly slightly older.

    Description: he forty-first cruise of Glomar Challenger was devoted to the study of the evolution of the eastern basins of the North Atlantic, off the continental margin of West Africa.     Description: On cruises 10 and 15 of Academic Kurchatov (1971, 1973) at the Jan-Mayen Ridge, a large number of samples was obtained. Most of them contained sedimentary rocks. From their study, it is safe to assume that the rocks of the Jan-Mayen Ridge were, at first, subjected to subsidence to a considerable depth, and then uplifted to their contemporary position, by the ascending tectonic movements. Thus, the Jan-Mayen Ridge is in contrast to other Atlantic submarine ridges, not only in the sedimentary rock composition, but in the character of the tectonic movements.

    Description: The western part of the North Atlantic Ocean holds clues to some of the most intriguing questions in marine geology. But because the geologic problems are many and varied, the sites of Leg 44 were multipurpose in nature. In particular, some of the targets were : 1) the Blake Nose, a spur of the Blake Plateau, to determine the nature, age, and origin of reef-like structures recognized on seismic profiles and 2) the Blake Outer Ridge, a long low ridge of sediments that forms the eastern boundary of the Blake-Bahama Basin, where we hoped to study the stratigraphy and sample supposed clathrates.

    Description: Three ferromanganese nodules handpicked from the tops of 2500 cm**2 area box cores taken from the north equatorial Pacific have been analysed for their U-Th series nuclides. 230Thexc concentrations in the surface 1-2 mm of the top side of the nodules indicate growth rates of 1.8-4.6 mm/10**6 yr. In two of the nodules a significant discontinuity in the 230Th exc depth profile has been observed at ~0.3 m.y. ago, suggesting that the nodule growth has been episodic. The concentration profiles of 231Pa exc (measured via 227Th) yield growth rates similar to the 230Th exc data. The bottom sides of the nodules display exponential decrease of 230Th exc/232Th activity ratio with depth, yielding growth rates of 1.5-3.3 mm/10**6 yr. The 230Th exc and 231Pa exc concentrations in the outermost layer of the bottom face are significantly lower than in the outermost layer of the top face. Comparison of the extrapolated 230Thexc/232Th and 230Th exc/231Pa exc activity ratios for the top and bottom surfaces yields an "age" of (5-15) x 10**4 yr for the bottom relative to the top. This "age" most probably represents the time elapsed since the nodules have attained the present orientation. The 210Pb concentration in the surface ~0.1 mm of the top side is in large excess over its parent 226Ra. Elsewhere in the nodule, up to ~1 mm depth in both top and bottom sides, 210Pb is deficient relative to 226Ra, probably due to 222Rn loss. The absence of 210Pbexc below the outermost layer of the top face rules out the possibility of a sampling artifact as the cause of the observed exponentially decreasing 230Thexc and 231Paexc concentration profiles. The flux of 210Pbexc to the nodules ranges between 0.31 and 0.58 dpm/cm**2/yr. The exhalation rate of 222Rn, estimated from the 226Ra-210Pb disequilibrium is ~570 dpm/cm**2/yr from the top side and 〉2000 dpm/cm**2/yr from the bottom side. 226Ra is deficient in the top side relative to 230Th up to ~0.5-1 mm and is in large excess throughout the bottom. The data indicate a net gain of 226Ra into the nodule, corresponding to a flux of (24-46) x 10**-3 dpm/cm**2/yr. On a total area basis the gain of 226Ra into the nodules is 〈20% of the 226Ra escaping from the sediments. A similar gain of 228Ra into the bottom side of the nodules is reflected by the high 228Th/232Th activity ratios observed in the outermost layer in contact with sediments.

    Description: The bulk chemical compositions of ferromanganese nodules recovered from 14 of 38 sediment cores collected from a 230 km2 area of abyssal hill topography in the northern equatorial Pacific (8° 20'N, 153° 0'W; regional depth 5000 m) vary nonrandomly between fairly wide limits. The nodules have Mn/Fe ratios ranging from 2.60 to 5.38 and all samples contain todorokite and delta-MnO2 . The variation in the Mn/Fe ratio is governed by the total Fe contents of the nodules; Mn varies to a much smaller extent. Cu and Ni contents average about 1% and vary independently of the Mn contents. The compositional variation in the nodules is related to two features of the associated sediments, which are siliceous pelagic clays. The total Fe contents correlate positively with the oxalate-soluble Fe contents of the surface (0-2 cm) sediments; and their Mn/Fe ratios correlate negatively with the accumulation rates of the sediments. It is suspected that the composition of the nodules is influenced to a considerable extent by diagenetic reactions in the sediments, the clearest manifestation of this being the transformation of oxyhydroxide Fe into an insoluble form, possibly by the formation of smectite. This in turn leads to the formation of relatively Fe-poor ferromanganese nodules. Such nodules occur on slowly accumulating sediments where relatively more diagenetic reaction in the sediments has taken place.

    Description: Excess 230Th dominates the alpha activity of the surface regions of manganese nodules and deep sea sediments. If uranium series eguilibrium is maintained, total alpha activity depth profiles should be as useful in determining sedimentation rates as are 230Th measurements. We have used cellulose nitrate alpha track recorders pressed against manganese nodule slabs to record high resolution alpha activity "maps' of a large number of nodules. Total alpha activity profiles have also been obtained for several sediment cores. From the approximately 90 nodule profiles measured to date, 73 show simple, approximately exponential depth dependence; about 2/3 of these have inferred deposition rates of 4-10 mm/10power6 yr. Ten profiles show statistically significant breaks in slope, suggesting growth rate changes. Within single dredge hauls there is little variation in growth rates, although different portions of the same nodule sometimes exhibit different growth rates. There is no correlation between depth and measured growth rate, except for a general tendency for the few Atlantic Ocean nodules we have measured to have slightly lower rates than Pacific or Indian Ocean samples. For a number of nodules and sediments the alpha track results have been compared with 230Th-based deposition rates measured by other workers. Two nodules have 230Th rates (W. S. Broecker et al., pers. comm.) identical within errors to the alpha track determinations. A third nodule (S. Krishnaswami, pers. comm. ) and two sediment cores previously measured by Goldberg and Koide (E. Sci. and Meteoritics, 1963, p. 90} all have much slower rates based on 230Th measurements compared with the alpha track results.

    Description: Fossil Mn nodules of Cretaceous age from western Timor exhibit chemical, structural and radioisotope compositions consistent with their being of deep-sea origin. These nodules show characteristics similar to nodules now found at depths of 3,500-5,000 m in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Slight differences in the fine structure and chemistry of these nodules and modern deep-sea nodules are attributed to diagenetic alteration after uplift of enclosing sediments.

    Description: Manganese nodules are considered to have accumulated in general very slowly: surface layers of nodules contain a large excess of 230Th, more than would be produced by uranium decay. The decrease of excess 230Th with depth within a nodule is generally interpreted to be due to the radioactive decay, and nodule accumulation rates were then estimated from this to be a few mm/Myr. How then do these nodules escape from burial by associated marine sediments which accumulate 3 orders of magnitude faster than the nodules? One possible explanation is that the radionuclides of interest were not incorporated in the nodule matrix during its growth but were adsorbed later. Subsequent inward diffusion of the radionuclides might result in an apparent radioactive decay. We have tested this hypothesis by measuring simultaneously two radionuclides of different half lives. If the gradients of the radionuclides are really due to the radioactive decay, then, assuming a constant growth rate for a nodule, we expect the profile of the shortlived nuclide to be steeper (because of its faster decay) than that of the longlived nuclide.

    Description: Chemical analyses of manganese nodules from the Central Pacific Basin show that their chemical composition varies regionally, although that of the associated sediments is markedly uniform throughout the basin. Mn content varies from 16 to 32% in average. Its higher value is generally found in nodules from siliceous clay and a few from deep-sea clay. Fe content tends to enrich in nodules from deep-sea clay area. Most manganese nodules, except those from deep-sea clay, are remarkably depleted in Fe compared with ones from the other Pacific regions. Mostly, Cu and Ni contents exceed 1% in nodules from siliceous clay, and decrease towards the northwest of the basin where deep-sea clay is distributed. The inter-element relationship between manganese nodules and associated sediments suggests that the mechanism of incorporation of major and minor elements in nodules is apparently different from that of the associated sediments. This finding seems to provide a new interpretation on the problem why manganese nodules having low accumulation rate are not buried by the associated sediments with greater sedimentation rate and then occur on sediment-seawater interface.

    Description: Ash layers from Deep Sea Drilling Project site 178 in the northeast Pacific Ocean have been dated by the 40Ar-39Ar stepwise heating technique to resolve published discrepancies concerning the length of time explosive volcanism has affected the eastern Aleutian arc and Alaskan Peninsula. The results of the investigation indicate that the record of ash-fall deposition at site 178 extends back at least 6.5 m.y. Assuming that 6.5 m.y. ago marks the onset of renewed calc-alkalic volcanism of the volcanic arc, proposed models of continuous and discontinuous motion between the Pacific and North American lithospheric plates can be evaluated. If appreciable time elapsed between the onset of subduction and the onset of arc volcanism, the 6.5-m.y. record of ash-fall deposition in the north-east Pacific is most compatible with models of continuous plate motion throughout late Cenozoic time.

    Description: Deep-sea sediment cores from Scripps Institution of Oceanography's ANTIPODE Expedition were described to identify visually distinct units based on color, texture, or other feature, sedimentary structures, lithology and abundance of component grains, and paleontology. Sixty-eight cores were examined, of which 34 are large diameter piston cores. Photographs and graphic lithology legs are included as PLATES 1-48. ANTIPODE Expedition recovered cores from: the Monterey-Ascension Fan, the Northeast Pacific, the Aleutians, the Northwest Pacific, the Philippine Sea, Indonesia, the Tonga Ridge, the Seychelles, Chagos Archipelago, the Mid-Indian Ridge, the Bay of Bengal, near Sumatra, and near the Cocos Island in the Indian Ocean. The purpose of this report is to present sufficient basic data on ANTIPODE cores for invesiigators to choose samples for their own research.

    Description: Chemical analyses of manganese nodules from the Central Pacific Basin show that their chemical composition varies regionally, although that of the associated sediments is markedly uniform throughout the basin. Mn content varies from 16 to 32% in average. Its higher value is generally found in nodules from siliceous clay and a few from deep-sea clay. Fe content tends to enrich in nodules from deep-sea clay area. Most manganese nodules, except those from deep-sea clay, are remarkably depleted in Fe compared with ones from the other Pacific regions. Mostly, Cu and Ni contents exceed 1% in nodules from siliceous clay, and decrease towards the northwest of the basin where deep-sea clay is distributed. The inter-element relationship between manganese nodules and associated sediments suggests that the mechanism of incorporation of major and minor elements in nodules is apparently different from that of the associated sediments. This finding seems to provide a new interpretation on the problem why manganese nodules having low accumulation rate are not buried by the associated sediments with greater sedimentation rate and then occur on sediment-seawater interface.

    Description: Copper porphyrins have been isolated from deep-sea sediments collected during six legs of the Deep Sea Drilling Project-International Program of Ocean Drilling. These pigments are present in depositional areas receiving high inputs of terrestrially derived oxidized organic matter. Such areas include the Black Sea, the Bay of Biscay, the Blake-Bahama Basin, and slumped Miocene deposits off Cape Bojador on the west coast of Africa.

    Description: A rapid procedure for Io (Th230) dating of sediments with accumulation rates in the range of several cm/1000 years is described. Studying of large sample populations with very small Io-excess activity is possible as the counting time (around 1500 min/sample) are 2 to 5 times shorter than with the standard Io-excess method. Improved sensitivity of the Io-excess measurement is achieved by: 1) extraction ( ~90 %) of the authigenic Io-excess with EDTA, with minor leaching ( ~30 %) of the allogenic Th232 and Io-supported, 2) processing samples as large as 10 g or more. The procedure was applied to sediments from the Caribbean (V 12-122) and from the Ionian Sea (M22_48 and M17_17). In the case of the standard core V 12-122 our results are in good agreement with previous time-consuming Io determinations. The resulting average accumulation rates of 2.0 ± 0.3 cm/1000 years for the Ionian Sea cores are close to the average derived from magnetic reversal studies of a nearby core.

    Description: Three main depositional sequences have been determined in the seismic records taken off West Spitsbergen (1) a Plio-Pleistocene sequence SPI-I with velocities of 1.7 to 2.8 km/sec; (2) a Pliocene allochthonous sequence SPI-II with velocities of 2.4 to 2.8 km/sec underlying unconformity U1; (3) a pre-Middle Oligocene sequence SPI-III with velocities of 2.9 to 4.8 km/sec underlying a distinct unconformity (U2) and deposited in front of the downfaulted Spitsbergen Platform indicating some opening of the Greenland Sea already before tbe time of magnetic anomaly 13 (36 m.y.b.p.). A marked change in the seismic configuration of the oceanic basement has been observed about 30 to 40 km east of the central Knipovich graben. The transition from the oceanic crust of the Knipovich Ridge to the strongly faulted, continental substratum of the Spitsbergen Platform occurs over a narrow zone and is associated with a pre-Middle Oligocene depocenter.

    Description: A large manganese nodule (manganese slab) was dredged from 2100 m on the Scott Plateau by R.V. Valdivia in 1977. It is an irregular ellipsoid, with a maximum dimension of 28 cm, parallel to the sea floor. Chemical analyses show that Mn and Fe proportions are comparable, and total Ni + Cu + Co content averages 0.7%. The nodule has a complex growth history which started with radial upward growth leading to coalescing into a continuous crust. The crust was coated with horizontal layers. After fracturing and infilling of cracks with calcareous sediment, further layers encased the nodule.

    Description: The plateau is a foundered continental block, and lies at an average depth of 2000-3000 m. On the plateau the dominant fault direction is NW to WNW, an ancient strike direction on the Australian continent. The western margin probably formed as a series of NE-trending rifts and NW-trending transforms during Late Jurassic breakup. Canyons cut the western margin, and some of these appear to be fault-bounded. One such fault forms the northern margin of a major NW-trending feature, the Wilson Spur. This appears to be a transform fault and perhaps extends across the abyssal plain as far as the eastern end of the Java Trench. Seismic profiles suggest that, at the trench, it separates thrust-faulted continental crust to the east from oceanic crust to the west. This could explain the eastern termintion of the deep part of the trench. The bathymetric depression of the Roti Basin, which lies southeast of the Java Trench, links the trench to the Timor Trough. The Argo Abyssal Plain slopes gently southward, with water depths ranging from 5000 m near the Java Trench to 5730 m in the south. Oceanic basement varies from smooth to hummocky and irregular, and is overlain by about 4000 m of acoustically semi-transparent Late Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments, that is in turn unconformably overlain by 200 m of layered Tertiary sediment. Bottom samples from the outer Scott Plateau show that Callovian breakup was preceded by a period of basic volcanism and shallow marine sedimentation, that restricted shallow marine conditions followed in the Late Jurassic, and that bathyal carbonate sedimenation prevailed by the Late Cretaceous (Campanian). Quaternary marls cored on the northern Scott Plateau straddled the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary, and siliceous oozes cored on the southern slope of the Java Trench contain nannofossils which, below a few decimetres, are older than late Pleistocene. The Java Trench cores indicate that the calcite compensation depth was apparently between 5420 and 5700 m in the early or midel Pleistocene, and is above 4950 m now. The Scott Plateau cores indicate that the present calcite compensation depth in the region lies below 3290 m. On the Scott Plateau Holocene sedimentation rates are about 5 cm/1000 years, but in the Java Trench they are much lower. Manganese oxide crusts and nodules were recovered from the Scott Plateau, but their content of valuable metals was low.

    Description: Times of vein mineral deposition in the ocean crust have been determined both by Rb-Sr isochron ages of vein smectites and by comparison of 87Sr/86Sr ratios of vein calcites with the known variations of seawater 87Sr/86Sr ratio with time. Results from drilling sites 105, 332B and 418A, Atlantic Ocean, which have basement formation ages of 155 m.y., 3.5 m.y., and 110 m.y., respectively, show that vein deposition is essenrially complete within 5-10 m.y. after formation of the basaltic crust. This provids direct evidence that hydrothermal circulation of sea-water through the oceanic crust is an important process for only 5-10 m.y. after crust formation.

    Description: REE abundances in gabbros and peridotites from Site 334 of DSDP Leg 37 show that these rocks are cumulates produced by fractional crystallization of a primitive oceanic tholeiite magma. They may be part of a layered oceanic complex. The REE distributions in the residual liquids left after such a fractionation are similar to those of incompatible element-depleted oceanic tholeiites. The REE data indicate that the basalts which overlie the gabbro-peridotite complex, are not genetically related to plutonic rocks.

    Notes: In order to avoid some of the disadvantages associated with the desmearing methods, a procedure has been developed where the smeared, primary, intensity data can be evaluated directly without desmearing. The procedure consists of the following: first, a model depending on a vector of unknowns, x = (x1, ...., xn), is constructed; then, an iterative search is made for the vector x, and a scale factor s, which corresponds to a local minimum in the error square sum based on the primary, slit-smeared, intensity data. The main advantages with the present method are that the comparison between theory and experiment is made directly with the experimental quantity; thus the experimental errors can be considered in this comparison. Furthermore, some of the disadvantages associated with the desmearing methods are avoided; the method is numerically stable and no extrapolations outside the measured angular range are necessary. Several data sets measured at different concentrations and with different, completely arbitrary, primary-beam weighting functions can be considered in the same refinement. The interparticle scattering effect may also be included in the least-squares refinement. The method is general, so that different models can be tested simply by changing only one subroutine of the computer program. It may also be used to evaluate data impaired by other types of resolution errors; for example, effects due to polychromatic radiation or resolution errors in neutron scattering. Two constructed examples of the application of the method are given: (1) the calculation of the dimensions and the molecular weight of particles with a shape which can be approximated with an ellipsoid of revolution; (2) the calculation of the dimensions and electron-density distribution for spherical particles.

    Notes: A method is described for finding the peak limits of a Bragg reflection from an analysis of its profile. A `window' of ± 0.67σ[φ)(x)] is set up on each ordinate φ(x) in the tails of the profile and the pattern of the following ordinates is observed through the window. As the ordinate moves from the peak to the background the pattern changes and the limits of the peak may be recognized. Bragg reflections from three crystals have been analysed by this method and the limits found were generally wider than those determined by the method of Lehmann & Larsen [Acta Cryst. (1974), A30, 580–584] applied to the same data. The value of σ(I)/I was near the minimum and similar to the value from the corrected Lehmann–Larsen limits. The behaviour of the methods is also compared by representing the reflections by equivalent Gaussian profiles, and it is found that 〉99% of the Gaussian peak is within the limits found by the present method.

    Notes: Existing knowledge about Scherrer constants is reviewed and a summary is given of the interpretation of the broadening arising from small crystallites. Early work involving the half-width as a measure of breadth has been completed and Scherrer constants of simple regular shapes have been determined for all low-angle reflections (h2 + k2 + l2 ≤ 100) for four measures of breadth. The systematic variation of Scherrer constant with hkl is discussed and a convenient representation in the form of contour maps is applied to simple shapes. The relation between the `apparent' crystallite size, as determined by X-ray methods, and the `true' size is considered for crystallites having the same shape. If they are of the same size, then the normal Scherrer constant applies, but if there is a distribution of sizes, a modified Scherrer constant must be used.

    Notes: Spherical crystals of alloy phases too hard and brittle for grinding can be obtained by partial remelting and solidification of a powder sample. The alloy powder is blown through an argon-plasma jet melting the surface material of individual fragments, which solidify again as nearly perfect spheres. The yield is a mixture of different materials in which it is possible, however, after heat treatment to find good single crystals of the original composition. Spherical single crystals of Cu9Al4 have been produced by this method and used for a high-precision X-ray investigation described elsewhere.

    Notes: Completely transparent and colourless single crystals of PbGe3O7 were grown from a melt of composition PbO.2GeO2 at 1040 K by spontaneous crystallization. The compound melts incongruently at 1070 K. The unit cell is orthorhombic with lattice constants a = 5.270 (2), b = 14.088 (4), c = 16.054 (4) Å; D293 = 5.94 (4), Dx = 5.985 g cm−3 for Z = 8. The probable space group is Pcab (D152h). A reported phase of composition PbGe205 is shown to be a mixture of PbGe3O7 and α-PbGeO3. X-ray powder data are given.

    Notes: An X-ray diffraction study of CsDNA has been carried out with the use of synchrotron radiation of wavelength λ = 1.2 Å. The geometry corresponds to a cylindrical specimen brought into a cylindrical beam of the same diameter and the absorption factor and the primary-beam attenuation factor have been calculated as functions of specimen μR for this geometry. The optimum size of a specimen is here about 1.5 times greater than that in the case of a plane-parallel beam used in International Tables for X-ray Crystallography [Vol. II, (1967), 2nd ed., p. 295. Birmingham: Kynoch Press]. Experimental and calculated primary-beam attenuation factors have been compared and the experimental value of the linear absorption coefficient μ of CsDNA has been estimated for various humidities. The agreement between μc = 78.1 and μo = 78.2 ± 3.6 cm−1 (relative humidity 66–75%) indicates that the geometrical model used is suitable to describe polymer fibres in a cylindrical beam of nearly the same size. It is seen from the observed μ values that there is one caesium ion per nucleotide (monomer unit of DNA molecule) in the specimens used.

    Notes: The conformations of different IgG antibodies were studied before and after interaction with antigen (hapten). In every case a strong change of the conformation was observed. Binding of hapten caused a decrease of the radius of gyration by 2 to 8% and a decrease of the volume by 3 to 10%, depending on the degree of saturation with hapten. Two IgG antibodies (anti-poly-d-alanyl) were split by enzymes into fragments which contain one binding site (Fab′) and two binding sites (Fab′)2, respectively, for hapten. No changes of conformation were observed with these fragments upon the interaction with hapten. These findings lead to the conclusion that the conformation change does not take place within the area of the combining site but relatively far away, at the area of the hinge region and/or the Fc-fragment.

    Notes: A design study was made of a neutron small-angle scattering (SAS) instrument for use at Argonne National Laboratory's proposed Intense Pulsed Neutron Source, IPNS-II (Carpenter & Werner, 1976; Werner, 1977; Carpenter, 1977). The instrument design incorporates several features: a converging-slit collimator, wavelength band-limiting choppers, capacity for large samples, and a two-dimensional detector. Machine design-dependent parameters are considered in a Monte-Carlo code that produces estimates of the instrumental resolution function and available flux at the sample. It was found that the calculated flux on sample exceeds that at steady-state reactor instruments of comparable resolution.

    Notes: A comparative analysis of the sperm-whale myoglobin structure in the crystal and in solution has been carried out with the technique previously formulated by the authors which uses the large-angle X-ray diffuse scattering for investigating the protein structure in solution. A `modified cube method', correctly taking into account the cavities within the protein molecule accessible to the solvent, is proposed for an accurate estimate of the solvent influence and for calculation of the scattering intensities. A comparison of the theoretical myoglobin scattering curves with the experimental scattering curve of this protein obtained by Stuhrmann shows rather noticeable quantitative divergences, which can be eliminated by a small increase in the distance between the `hairpin' GH and the other part of the protein molecule. It is also shown that several other physically reasonable shifts of helices (or groups of helices) do not lead to an agreement between the experimental and theoretical scattering indicatrices.

    Notes: The density-contrast method, commonly used in X-ray (and neutron) small-angle scattering studies of macromolecules in solution, can yield a wealth of information if; (a) the solute is monodisperse and the solution is ideal: (b) each macromolecule in solution has a volume associated with it inside of which the density distribution is independent of the density of the solvent. More specifically it has been pointed out that in this case an expression of the molecular weight can be obtained which does not involve the partial specific volume, provided that the X-ray experiments are performed on an absolute scale. On the other hand, it is well known that X-ray scattering experiments on an ideal solution of identical macromolecules can yield the molecular weight for any composition of the solvent, provided solute, solvent and partial specific volumes are defined and measured at constant chemical potential. Therefore a combination of X-ray scattering and densimetry experiments allows one to verify to what extent condition (b) holds true. Such a set of experiments has been performed on Rhesus monkey low-density serum lipoproteins, the solvent being water containing variable amounts of NaBr. It is concluded that in this case condition (b) is fulfilled. Moreover several important aspects of the analysis of the X-ray scattering curves can be verified.

    Notes: The use of the polymers tagged with heavy atoms in random positions along the chains (randomly tagged polymers) in small-angle X-ray scattering is proposed as a new method for measuring the chain conformations in concentrated solutions and in bulk polymers. The experimentally determined excess scattering from the tagged chains dispersed in the system is shown to be proportional to the scattering function of the hypothetical chains that have no tags but have the conformation of the tagged chains when the heavy atoms have sufficiently large scattering power. It has been experimentally verified that the effect of the tags on the chain conformation can be eliminated by the extrapolation of the apparent values, measured for a series of tagged polymers with various tag content, to zero tag content. The radii of gyration of the polystyrene chains (M = 1.1 × 105) in the bulk and in concentrated solutions in a good solvent and a θ-solvent have been determined. The chain dimension in a good solvent (toluene at 25°C) decreases rapidly first and then gradually approaches the unperturbed dimension with increasing polymer concentration. The dimension in a θ-solvent (trans-decalin at 21.2°C) is independent of the polymer concentration. The conformation of the polystyrene chains in the bulk was found to be a Gaussian coil.

    Notes: Small-angle X-ray scattering from oriented mats and random suspensions of polyethylene single crystals has been studied. A modification of the Guinier equation for platelets was derived to accommodate the two-phase nature of polymer lamellae. This modification also permitted the modelling of various degrees of interaction between lamellae and suspending media. Dried crystal mats show an increase in fold period on contact with potential solvents. Crystals which have never been dried show no evidence of penetration of the fold surface by the same liquids. Apparently the drying process causes a reorganization of the surface of the lamellae. Since the fold surfaces of crystals in suspension are unaffected by the liquids used, it is reasonable to assume a `tight' fold surface model. Crystallinities calculated with this model are in excellent agreement with recent differential scanning calorimetric data on crystals kept in suspension.

    Notes: The study of semi-dilute polyelectrolyte solutions by small-angle neutron scattering shows that the correlation function S(q) of all the chains presents a peak for a value q = qh of the scattering vector q. This is taken as evidence for some organization among the elongated polyions. This phenomenon has been observed for a fraction of polymethacrylic acid of very low molecular weight. The experiments show essentially: (1) the progressive vanishing of the peak with the addition of a neutral salt at constant polyelectrolyte concentration; (2) the variation of qh with the polyelectrolyte concentration c, qh ∝ c1/2; (3) the decrease of the peak intensity as the charge density of the chain increases. These results, which indicate the important role of the electrostatic interactions on this organization phenomenon, are discussed in terms of a lattice model and a recently proposed isotropic model.

    Notes: The concept of interface distribution functions [Ruland (1977). Colloid Polym. Sci. 255, 417–427] has been applied to the evaluation of the small-angle scattering of a series of polyethylene samples. The results indicate that the statistics of the lamellar stacking is not necessarily determined by next-neighbor interactions and that non-negligible volume fractions of amorphous domains outside the lamellar systems are observed in a number of samples.

    Notes: Crystallization of a linear polyethylene from the melt was followed in situ with the ORNL 10-meter SAXS camera [Hendricks (1978). J. Appl. Cryst. 11, 15–30]. Specimens were rapidly cooled in the X-ray beam in tandem birdcage furnaces from 1̃80°C to temperatures between 115 and 126°C, and scattering patterns were recorded for 30 s in 50 s intervals. Because of this relatively high-speed data acquisition rate, it was possible to obtain data in time periods which were short compared to the rate of change of the scattering patterns. The SAXS curves showed shapes which changed continuously during crystallization. The scattering curves are the superposition of a zero-angle peak and a Bragg maximum. Guinier plots of the zero-angle peak manifest scattering by lamellae of constant thickness. The thickness value is nearly that expected for crystallites at these crystallization temperatures. A model in which skeletal spherulites form and then later fill in is consistent with these results. Decreasing SAXS intensity and changing Bragg peak intensities indicate crystal thickening during cooling to room temperature.

    Notes: The microdomain structure of polystyrene-polyisoprene A-B type block copolymers was analysed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as an ideal model system for a pseudo two-phase solid structure. The structure was analysed in terms of spatial distribution, size, and the interracial structure of the dispersed domains of one component (A segments) in the matrix of the other (B segments). The SAXS analyses were performed with two collimating systems, a Rigaku Denki camera (essentially a four-slit system with the addition of Soller slits) and a Kratky camera, which had widely different slit-length and slit-width weighting functions and was used to investigate instrumental effects, especially the role of the Soller slits in the obtaining of reliable desmeared intensity data in the tail of the SAXS curve. Comparison of the results indicated that the Soller slits facilitate the accurate evaluation of the interfacial thickness from the desmeared intensity data in the tail. The accuracy of the infinite slit-height approximation and the effect of truncating the higher-order terms in Ih (the intensity associated with the interphase) on the estimated interfacial thickness are discussed. The infinite slit-height approximation leads to values 25–35% smaller than the exact value (23 Å), and the truncation also leads to a value of the interfacial thickness smaller (19 Å) than the value (23 Å) based on the full analysis. The value obtained is in good agreement with the values predicted from the statistical-mechanical theories of block copolymers in bulk.

    Notes: Isothermal decomposition of a Au-60 at.% Pt alloy, quenched from the solid as well as the liquid state, has been studied with the D11 neutron small-angle scattering spectrometer at ILL, Grenoble. An incident neutron wavelength of 6.7 Å was used and measurements were carried out in the range of scattering vector [β = 4πsin θ/λ] from 2.8 × 10−2 to 21 × 10−2 Å−1. The preliminary results indicate that decomposition of this alloy at 550°C takes place by a spinodal mode, although deviations were observed from linear spinodal theory, even at very early times. Slower aging kinetics were observed in liquid-quenched alloy as compared with solid-quenched. Liquid quenching is more efficient in suppressing quench clustering than is solid quenching. However, liquid quenching yields an extremely fine-grained material, which thereby enhances discontinuous precipitation at grain boundaries, competing with decomposition in the bulk. A Rundman–Hilliard analysis was used for the early stages of the spinodal reaction to obtain an interdiffusion coefficient of the order of 10−16 cm2 s−1 at 550°C for the solid-quenched alloy.

    Notes: Two methods for performing small-angle electron scattering (SAES) experiments in transmission electron microscopes are described: the long-camera-length method and the selected-area-diffraction method. It is shown experimentally that angular resolutions of a few microradians and a few tenths of milliradians, respectively, are easily obtained by these two methods. A number of examples of the application of SAES to problems in materials science are presented. The use of new high-brightness electron sources is expected to produce significant increases in angular resolution, and the use of electron-energy analyzers will permit the separation of most of the inelastic contribution to the SAES intensity distribution.

    Notes: The creep properties in high-temperature alloys are dependent on the presence of second and higher phase components. In particular in the nimonic group of alloys the size distribution and concentration of the γ′ phase are crucial factors in the resistance to creep. A possible mechanism for degradation of creep resistance is the Ostwald ripening of the γ′ phase. A sample of Nimonic 105 (Trademark of Henry Wiggin and Co. Ltd) was subjected simultaneously to a stress of 500 MPa and a temperature of 800°C in situ in the beam using a specially developed cell on the small-angle scattering facility (D 11A) at the Institut Laue Langevin. Scattering patterns were taken continuously and spectra were recorded every ̃20 min; the macroscopic creep was also recorded. Measurements were taken up to the point of fracture. A peak in the intensity was observed at a scattering vector κ (= 4π sin θ/λ) of 0.005 Å−1 which is believed to be the lowest value at which such an effect has been observed in alloys. The observed variation in the scattering after treatment for multiple scattering and absorption corrections is discussed in terms of particle size and size distribution.

    Notes: A double-mirror monochromator in which one of the mirrors is considerably longer than conventionally employed has been used to collect diffraction data from crystalline tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) protein (unit cell: 224 × 228 × 174 Å). Considerable improvements in speed of data collection are observed over both customary focusing optics and pinhole collimation. Quantitative comparisons are made of the quality of data collected from TMV protein by this method and by the use of nickel-filtered radiation.

    Notes: Correlation between the symmetry of the two-dimensional flux-line lattice (FLL) and the real crystal lattice (CL) has been studied in a superconducting niobium sphere by means of small-angle neutron diffraction. A double-perfect-silicon-crystal diffractometer enabled precise determination of the three interfluxoid distances corresponding to the FLL basic cell. A systematic study of the anisotropic behavior was made as a function of temperature and magnetic field amplitude for fields parallel to a few high-symmetry CL axes in the (1{\bar 1}0) plane. In addition, at T = 4.30 K progressive deformation of the FLL was studied as the sample was rotated in the (1{\bar 1}0) and (100) planes. The FLL was found to be hexagonal only for fields parallel to the threefold CL axis. Twofold symmetry prevailed for other CL directions in these planes except near the fourfold axis, where either of two distorted triangular lattices existed, preserving the reflection symmetry in composite, but not individually. When compared to current models for fluxoid-CL interactions, the present results show that no theory predicts the observed behavior quantitatively under general conditions, but some models agree well for certain high-symmetry CL axes.

    Notes: The double-perfect-crystal small-angle diffraction technique enables measurement of scattering angles to within an accuracy of 0.3′′ of arc. At a wavelength of 2.55 Å, this provides a resolution of 3 × 10−6 Å−1 in the scattering vector. This technique has been used to study the anisotropic behavior of the critical parameters B0 and Hc1, characteristic of the first-order magnetic phase transition which occurs in low-κ type II superconductors. Magnetic fields were applied parallel to several crystal axes in the (1{\bar 1}0) and (100) planes of a large single-crystal sphere of pure niobium, resulting in well defined flux-line lattices (FLL). Measurement of the FLL cell area in the intermediate, mixed-state-field region gives the equilibrium flux density B0, which results from an attractive interaction between fluxoids. In addition, field variation of the scattered neutron intensity allows measurement of the transition field between the mixed state and intermediate mixed state. This transition field is related to the lower critical field Hc1 and enables its determination to a precision of 0.2%. Data at T = 4.3 K display a small anisotropic effect of about 2% in B0 and 1% in Hc1. Although orientation effects of this magnitude are difficult to resolve by bulk measurements, the neutron data are in accord with magnetization data. The temperature dependence of these parameters is found to be in qualitative but not quantitative agreement with current theoretical models.
