    Notes: This note presents the closed form equations for the stiffness terms in the elastic-plastic stiffness matrix for axisymmetric finite elements. The element considered is a triangular ring element characterized by linear displacement relationships and an averaged state of stress. The physical law is modelled by the incremental theory of plasticity utilizing the Prandtl-Reuss flow rule and von-Mises Yield Criterion. Results are presented comparing stiffness terms as computed by numerical integration to those computed from the closed form equations. Significant errors in stiffness terms arising from numerical integration are observed for axisymmetric elements located near the line of axial symmetry as a result of the logarithmic nature of some of the stiffness terms.

    Notes: The compressible potential flow on a blade-to-blade surface of a turbomachine is analysed using the Thomas algorithm. The numerical properties of resulting non-linear simultaneous equations are studied with respect to grid aspect ratios and convergence.     Notes: This note describes improvements to the Suhara-Fukuda method for generating a triangular finite element network. These are based on the use of a node generation procedure which distributes nodes is a regular pattern across the network area and is sufficiently flexible to permit any variation in element density. Because of the regular node distribution, poorly shaped elements will not arise and so the procedure for connecting the nodes to form elements can be simplified. Examples of networks generaed in this way are given.

    Notes: In a recent paper, Dr. Frind has formulated a two-dimensional isoparametric finite element based upon the Hermite bicubic interpolation scheme. The present discussion focuses upon certain simplifications in the derivation which appear to have diminished the accuracy of the resulting element, and suggests a simpler approach to the element formulation. This author agrees strongly with Dr. Frind's recommendation of the Hermite parametric element as an efficient and useful tool for general field problems; the present comments are offered to point out that, in fact, the accuracy comparisons presented by Dr. Frind are biased against the Hermite finite element.

    Notes: A finite element formulation for large elasto-plastic deformation of polycrystalline materials is proposed in incremental form. The effect of rotation of crystal axes besides usual element rotaion is taken into account. Some numerical considerations on polycrystalline plasticity (i.e. stress-strain curves for several proportional loadings, effect of change of loading path on stress-strain curve, subsequent yield loci for uniaxial and equi-biaxial loadings and so forth) are given for the case of small deformation by using a plate model which consists of 121 square FCC crystals.

    Notes: A least squares method is presented for computing approximate solutions of indefinite partial differential equations of the mixed type such as those that arise in connection with transonic flutter analysis. The mehod retains the advantages of finite difference schemes namely simplicity and sparsity of the resulting matrix system. However, it offers some great advantages over finite difference schemes. First, the method is insensitive to the value of the forcing frequency i.e., the resulting matrix system is always symmetric and positive definite,. As a result, iterative methods may be successfully employed to solve the matrix system, thus taking full advantage of the sparsity. Furthermore, the method is insensitive to the type of the partial differential equation, i.e., the computational algorithm is the same in elliptic and hyperbolic regions. In this work the method is formulated and numerical results for model problems are presented. Some theoretical aspects of least squares approximations are also discussed.

    Notes: Fourier analysis of numerical accuracy has traditionally concentrated on the propagation behaviour of various methods. When systems of equations in more than one unknown are involved, analysis of propagation accuracy alone is shown to be incomplete. A distribution factor is introduced to complement the Fourier analysis in these cases, and application of the concept to two problems commonly encountered in the water resources field is demonstrated. The distribution factor is shown to provide important information which cannot be obtained from the customary analysis of propagation accuracy.

    Notes: An optimal steady-state control problem governed by an elliptic state equation is solved by several finite element methods. Finite element discretizations are applied to different variational formulations of the problem yielding accurate numerical results as compared with the given analytical solution. It is sated that, for minimum computational effort and high accuracy, ‘mixed’ finite elements requiring only C° continuity, and approximating the control and state functions simultaneously are better suited to similar ‘fourth order’ problems.

    Notes: The boundary-integral equation medthod is particularly well suited for solution of stress concentration and elastic fracture mechanics problems. The method was not previously applicable to anisotropic three dimensional problems because no efficient technique existed for calculation of the required point load solution for an infinite body. A technique has been developed to evaluate numerically the anisotropic point load soultions, and used to generate data bases for various materials. An intrpolation technique is used to evaluate the point load solutions efficiently within a higher order boundary-intgral equation code. The effectiveness of the technique is verified by solution of problems involving both uniaxial stress states and stress concentrations.

    Notes: A simple approximation by nonconforming finite elements is presented that passes the patch test of Irons and Strang but does not yield approximate solutions converging to the solution of the given boundary value problem. It is constructed from continuous piecewise linear functions perturbed by step functions.     Notes: The solution of incompressible, viscous flow problems using the primitive variable finite element approach is formulated in a coherent and physically reasoned exposition. In particular, it is shown that terms associated with changes in momentum caused by lack of mass conservation should logically be included in the governing equations. Previous formulations have not considered this possibility. Numerical results are presented to show the effect of inclusion of these extra terms; however, it is concluded from the numerical results for the specific case which was tested that there is no obvious benefit obtained by including these terms.

    Notes: A dual load method of truss analysis is presented that allows highly nonlinear member behaviour to be followed. In particular, a brittle type of strut behaviour is considered. The method assumes that the inelastic strut response is known and that piecewise linearization of the behaviour is acceptable. An example is given to illustrate the type of problem that can be handled. The example involves negative stiffness of the members and consequently attention must be given to the equation solving procedure for the structure. A comparison is made with some observed test results.

    Notes: A numerical Laplace transform inversion technique is described, which is a modification of the inversion method using an exponential series representation. By adding an auxiliary function and using Erdélyi's inversion formula, the proposed technique provides the inverse approximation with improved accuracy near t = 0. Numerical illustrations shows that this procedure also works in cases when the original method of schapery fails to give satisfactory results.

    Notes: Numerical convergence of first- and second-order plate-bending elements is investigated. Using iso-parametric formulation, general bilinear and biquadratic quadrilaterals, with the three moment components and the transverse deflection as dependent variables, are obtained. The same elements are also used as degenerate triangles by collapsing one side. A constant bending moment patch test, applied numerically to the elements, indicated poor performance for linear triangles, while the bilinear, quadratic and biquadratic elements behaved well, with exact results in uniform meshes. Further numerical examples showed the same general trend as the patch test. Although bilinear, quadratic and biquadratic elements were always able to yield the correct solutions with mesh refinements, the linear triangles were in general unable to do so.

    Notes: The complete two-dimensional partial differential equations for developing laminar flow in a circular tube have been treated by a finite difference analysis. Property variation with temperature, especially that of viscosity, is allowed for in a flexible manner. The continuity and momentum equations, and then the energy equations, are solved by direct elimination at each axial step, and marching procedure used in the axial direction. A new technique is that the stepwise energy balance is rigidly satisfied throughout by using it as a constituent equation in place of the ‘explicit’ wall thermal boundary condition normally used.The analysis predicts the complete developing hydrodynamic and thermal fields, together with friction factors and heat transfer coefficients. It has been tested for a range of fluid velocity and thermal boundary conditions and for various fluids, including high viscosity oils, water and air.Data for constant wall heat flux have already been published. 1,2 Predictions for constant wall temperature presented here are for forced and combined convection and are compared with experimental data of Test3 and Zeldin and Schmidt4.

    Notes: An approximate analysis method for calculating local and system geometric imperfection influences on the displacements, stresses and buckling load of imperfect truss structures, is developed. The structural response, as a function of the design variables, is expressed in this approximate analysis which is much faster and cheaper than the ‘accurate’ analysis. The accurate analysis for a particular design is used as a base for each approximate analysis which then gives the response information needed for other designs in the neighbourhood about the base point design. Comparison of the approximate behaviour predictions with accurate results based on the more refined analysis methods shows that the quality of the proposed approximate analysis procedure is adequate for guiding a structural design procedure. It is evident that the approximate analysis is capable of describing the nonlinear behaviour of the structure, but when nonlinearity increases, the quality of the approximate analysis tends to deteriorate.

    Notes: A boundary-location method is developed for finite element simulation of steady, two-dimensional flows of Newtonian liquid with free boundaries. In the method, boundary shape and position and the velocity and pressure fields are determined simultaneously. Inertial, viscous, gravitational, and surface tension effects are included in the development. The complete set of nonlinear finite element equations is solved by a modified frontal method combined with Newton-Raphson iteration to speed convergence. The finite element used to illustrate the method approximates the pressure as a piecewise constant function and the velocity and free boundaries as piecewise linear functions. Example calculations for flow from a slit show that the method can be effective.

    Notes: The choice on an efficient direct integration procedure for linear structural dynamic equations of motion is discussed. It is suggested that as accuracy parameter the truncation error on the exponential terms contained in the modal contributions of the exact solution be assumed. This error does not always coincide with the local truncation error. These considerations were used to design an unconditionally stable one-step method whose accuracy is 0(h4). Numerical comparisons with some well-known integration schemes showed the efficiency of the proposed method.

    Notes: This paper presents a generalized method which generates linear, triangular, quadrilateral and pentahedral elements for the finite element method. Depending on geometrical and material variations, the region to be discretized is manually divided into blocks such as lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, pentahedrons and hexahedrons in several appropriate co-ordinate systems. However, no connectivity information of the adjacent blocks is required by the user as input. The continuity of the generated nodal co-ordinates and element configurations at the block interface are automatically maintained to describe the geometry of structures, no matter how these five types of blocks are connected. Furthermore, a mesh grading algorithm which generates reliable mesh grade distributions in the interior of the triangular and quadrilateral blocks is established corresponding to the arbitrarily defined subdivision numbers for each edge line of blocks. This algorithm is extended to the mesh grading in the interior of the hexahedral and pentahedral blocks. Element numbers are also renumbered in this scheme, in addition to node numbers, in order to increase the computational efficiency of the global matrix assembly. Additional facilities, i.e. loading data generation, boundary condition data generation and so on, are also discussed. An illustrative and a practical example are given to demonstrate the capabilities of this scheme.

    Notes: A diagonal lumped mas formulation with non-zero inertia terms is presented for Ahmad's general shell element. The effect of co-ordinate transformation of the mas matrix is demonstrated. Due to arbitray co-ordinate transformation on nodal variables, the diagonal lumped mas matrix becomes a banded matrix of half bandwidth three. It is shown that with some approximations this matrix can be made diagnoal without effecting the results appreciably. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the formulation.     Notes: A Procedure is presented for generating a class of conformal mappings useful in the formulation of finite-difference problems involving curved boundaries. The method provides a systematic approach that is capable, in principle, of reducing the geometry to a nearly-rectangular domain for a wide variety of partical problems. The introduction of sheared co-ordinates in this computational domain then provides for solution of the problem in a nearly-orthogonal (in fact, nearly-conformal) co-ordinate system, with its boundaries corresponding to co-ordinate lines. The method is based upon the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation and is quite simple to apply. Several examples illustrating the types of geometries which can be treated in this manner are presented.

    Notes: A hybrid-stress element is developed for the analysis of thin and moderately thick plates. The independent transverse displacement and rotations are interpolated by the 12-node cubic Serendipity shape functions. All components of stress are included and 36β stress assumption is used. The element stiffness possesses correct rank and numerical results indicate that the element does not lock in the thin-plate limit. Results obtained using the present element are compared with those obtained using a 12-node assumed-displacement based Mindlin plate element with reduced integration; the present hybrid-stress element is shown to yield superior accuracy for all cases considered. In addition, the accuracy of the present element is compared against that of analogous 4-node and 8-node hybrid-stress Mindlin plate elements.

    Notes: The technique of fixed-interface modal synthesis used to solve large structural eigenvalue problems is extended to fluid-structure eigenvalue problems with a view to efficient solution of problems involving localized modifications. Three cases are considered: namely, those fluid or fluid-structure vibration problems directly analogous to the structural case; the modification of the fluid model of a structure enclosing a compressible fluid; and the modification of fluid and structural models of a structure enclosing an incompressible fluid. Examples of the three cases are given, as are estimates of the computation that can be saved when using the methods to avoid resolving modified eigenvalue problems. It is also shown that the hard-walled modes of a fluid enclosure can be used to modify the incompressible-fluid modes of the fluid-structure system to account for a degree of compressibility in the fluid. An example and computation estimates are given.

    Notes: The present paper describes a hybrid stress finite element formulation for geometrically non-linear analysis of thin shell structures. The element properties are derived from an incremental form of Hellinger-Reissner's variational principle in which all quantities are referred to the current configuration of the shell. From this multi-field variational principle, a hybrid stress finite element model is derived using standard matrix notation. Very simple flat triangular and quadrilateral elements are employed in the present study. The resulting non-linear equations are solved by applying the load in finite increments and restoring equilibrium by Newton-Raphson iteratioin. Numerical examples presented in the paper include complete snap-through buckling of cylindrical and spherical shells. It turns out that the present procedure is computationally efficient and accurate for non-linear shell problems of high complexity.

A hybrid-stress functional is defined by using a Mindlin-type displacement assumption and including all components of stress. The Euler equations and matrix formulation corresponding to this functional are examined to assess the effects of plate thickness, and a rationale is presented for the selection of stress assumptions so that locking is avoided in the thin plate limit. To illustrate these concepts, a series of linear displacement quadrilateral elements are derived and tested, and the best of these elements is identified for suggested implementation in general-purpose computer programs.

    Notes: A method is presented for solving field problems using a finite element formulation, to be executed with the aid of a micro-computer. In order to reduce the requirements regarding memory space, the coefficients of the matrix defining the system of equations are not stored, but calculated when they are needed, in a modification of the usual finite element procedure. The method is applicable to all problems for which Gauss-Seidel iteration converges, and can handle problems involving more than 100 degrees-of-freedom on a computer with 8,000 bytes memory. Computing time may run up to several minutes per cycle of iteration, but on a small, personal computer, this is still acceptable.

    Notes: A finite element formulation for the adhesive of a lap joint is presented. The element is based on the assumptions common to the theories of Goland and Reissner and Ojalvo and Eidinoff. Deficiencies of the lap joint theories of those workers and of a previous finite element formulation of the adhesive are pointed out and the covergence of the new formulation to their results is discussed. Experimentally determined extreme fibre strains in the adherends are compared with those determined numerically using the new finite element formulation.

    Notes: Finite elements with polynomial interpolation functions of a degree higher than 2 are used comparatively little on large FEM systems, except in shell elements. However, the author has had several years' experience in the use of the so-called ‘isoparametric, reduced Hermitian element’,4 Which has behaved excellently in an industrial as well as an educational environment. The reason for the interest in the Hermitian concept is that the overcompatibility of the element reduces the number of unknowns, the solution time and the discontinuities in stresses between elements.Explicit formulae for the family of interpolation polynomials of order q and degree p = 2q + 1 are given and hierarchical Hermite elements are introduced. The families of Hermite and serendipity elements are isomorphic and the latter may thus be extended to arbitrary high order.For some problems the equidistant node configuration in Lagrange elements of degree 3 and higher is not optimal with respect to smoothness, and a new type of element, the ‘Lobatto element’, is introduced.The methods consistently produce results of an accuracy which is above the requirements of usual engineering applications, but in graphics smoothness of curves is important for a convincing representation. The methods are of particular interest in industries working with structures composed of almost linear materials with well-known properties.

    Notes: An assessment of flat triangular plate bending elements with displacement degrees-of-freedom at the three corner nodes only is presented, with the purpose of identifying the most effective for thin plate analysis. Based on a review of currently available elements, specific attention is given to the theoretical and numerical evaluation of three triangular 9 degrees-of-freedom elements; namely, a discrete Kirchhoff theory (DKT) element, a hybrid stress model (HSM) element and a selective reduced integration (SRI) element. New and efficient formulations of these elements are discussed in detail and the results of several example analyses are given. It is concluded that the most efficient and reliable three-node plate bending elements are the DKT and HSM elements.

    Notes: Convection-diffusion equations are difficult to solve when the convection term dominates because most solution methods give solutions which oscillate in space. Previous criteria based on the one-dimensional convection-diffusion equation have shown that finite difference and Galerkin (linear or quadratic basis functions) will not give oscillatory solutions provided the Peclet number times the mesh size (Pe Δx) is below a critical value. These criteria are based on the solution at the nodes, and ensure that the nodal values are monotone. Similar criteria are developed here for other methods: quadratic Galerkin with upwind weighting, cubic Galerkin, orthogonal collocation on finite elements with quadratic, cubic or quartic polynomials using Lagrangian interpolation, cubic or quartic polynominals using Hermite interpolation, and the method of moments. The nodal values do not oscillate for collocation or moments methods with Hermite cubic polynomials regardless of the value of Pe Δx.A new criterion is developed for all methods based on the monotonicity of the solutions throughout the domain. This criterion is more restrictive than one based only on the nodal values. All methods that are second order (Δx2) or better in truncation error give oscillatory solutions (based on the entire domain) unless Pe Δx is below a critical value. This value ranges from 2 for finite difference methods to 4·6 for Hermite, quartic, collocation methods.

This example makes it easier to identify the cause of phase speed error, either due to linear or non-linear processes, and furthermore, to find a satisfactory scheme for time integration. The numerical schemes compared include: Arakawa Jacobian,1 Arakawa-Matsuno scheme, Galerkin finite element, Lax-Wendroff, leap-frog, and Crank-Nicholson. The effect of a variational adjustment (see Sasaki16) is also studied. Computational time, RMS errors in stream function and vorticity, and the conservation of the mean kinetic energy and enstrophy are compared at the end of 120 (one period) and 240 (two periods) time steps. The study indicates that the numerical scheme that employs finite elements in space (same as Arakawa Jacobian) and Crank-Nicholson in time is the most accurate among the schemes studied.

    Notes: A computational algorithm, based on the combined use of mixed finite elements and classical Rayleigh-Ritz approximation, is presented for predicting the nonlinear static response of structures; The fundamental unknowns consist of nodal displacements and forces (or stresses) and the governing nonlinear finite element equations consist of both the constitutive relations and equilibrium equations of the discretized structure. The vector of nodal displacements and forces (or stresses) is expressed as a linear combination of a small number of global approximation functions (or basis vectors), and a Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to approximate the finite element equations by a reduced system of nonlinear equations. The global approximation functions (or basis vectors) are chosen to be those commonly used in static perturbation technique; namely a nonlinear solution and a number of its path derivatives. These global functions are generated by using the finite element equations of the discretized structure.The potential of the global-local mixed approach and its advantages over global-local displacement finite element methods are discussed. Also, the high accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed approach are demonstrated by means of numerical examples.

    Notes: This paper is devoted to a comparison of the relative accuracy of two-dimensional vs. three-dimensional finite element representations of contaminant dispersion in shallow lakes. Formulations of both types are developed, followed by numerical calculations of a hypothetical lake. The results indicate that for typical lakes a two-dimensional dispersion analysis can be employed in the absence of a significant advective contribution. With significant advection the two-dimensional approach is not sufficiently accurate.     Notes: Methods for solving the following data-fitting problems are discussed: given the data (xi, yi, fi),i = 1,…,N construct a smooth bivariate function S with the property that S(xi, yi) = fii = 1,…,N. Because the desire to fit this type of data is encountered frequently in many areas of scientific applications, an investigation of the available methods for solving this problem was undertaken. Several aspects, such as computational efficiency, fitting characteristics and ease of implementation, were analysed and compared. Within the context of a general-purpose method for large sets of data, two of these methods emerged as being generally superior to the others.     Notes: This paper describes a method for the automatic triangulation of arbitrary multilateral plane domains. In addition, the method can be used in connection with that suggested by Zienkiewicz and Phillips4 for the subdivision of curved-boundary domains. The method can be described as general fully automatic and computer oriented. A Fortran computer program has been prepared by the author. Output can be of interactive, graphical or alphanumerical form. The program has been applied to a number of cases. The resulting triangulations are always satisfactory, even when vigorous changes of mesh sizes are encountered.

    Notes: Recently, theoretical error analysis for alternating-direction methods using isoparametric elements has been done by the author. Here the implementation of these methods is described for nonlinear parabolic boundary-value problems, and numerical results using these methods are presented. With an alternating-direction method, multidimensional problems can be solved as a series of one-dimensional problems. This results in great savings of both computation time and storage compared to standard finite element techniques.

    Notes: This paper describes the use of a penalty method to enforce the constraint of incompressibility in nonlinear elasticity. As an example, a problem involving the use of the Newton-Raphson method in conjunction with incremental loading and a successive mesh refinement scheme is presented. It is shown that during the incremental loading phase and the Newton-Raphson refinement on a fixed mesh, all tangent stiffness matrices are positive definite for the chosen energy density and load increment. But when the mesh is refined and the solution is interpolated as a starting value on the new mesh, the tangent stiffness matrix is indefinite. A theoretical analysis of the associated mixed method and a new equivalence theorem are seen to lead to a way to retain positive definiteness. The key is the use of an equivalent tangent stiffness matrix which is the reduced Hessian matrix. The numerical example shows that both positive definiteness and the quadratic convergence rate of the Newton-Raphson method are obtained.

    Notes: The discretization procedure applied to the evolution equations of non-linear heat transfer is usually twofold; first, a semi-discretization in space is realized (by finite elements in the present case), leaving a set of first order non-linear differential equations and, second, the time integration of these equations is accomplished by a step-by-step procedure (e.g. by one-step implicit schemes), thus yielding a set of non-linear algebraic equations for each time-step considered.This paper discusses the two classes of methods one can resort to for solving these final non-linear algebraic systems: (1)Tangent methods derived from the Newton-Raphson (NR) or modified NR techniques, in which successive linearized systems based on the tangent Jacobian matrix are solved until coveragence is reached; owing to the second order accuracy of this method the required number of iterations per step is small, especially if the capacity heat flows are mildly non-linear; tangent methods applied to diffusion problems suffer, however, an important shortcoming; the Jacobian matrices are unsymmetrical and thus require extended core storage and special care in the organization of the solution procedure. Some economy may be realized by either the modified tangent method (the tangent matrix is kept constant for several iterates) or the restricted tangent method (a single iterate per time-step).(2)Secant methods obtained by direct linearization of the time-step equations, in which out-of-balance heat flows are computed at each iteration and serve to correct the solution until heat flow equilibrium is restored; in comparison with tangent methods, a greater number of iterations per step is expected for reasonable accuracy, but the system matrix is always built and inverted only once per time-step and, above all, is symmetrical. it is shown how the pseudo-force formulation with a few corrective loads updating enjoys nearly the same convergence properties as the modified tangent method without involving unsymmetrical system matrices. This constitutes the best suited method for mildly non-linear problems of heat transfer.Some simple numerical experiments are presented that show the relative advantages of the two methods on bench-mark problems.

    Notes: A new finite element method is presented for the numerical solution of the Burgers' equation. The method is based on a weighted residual formulation in which the method of characteristics is incorporated by employing isoparametric space-time elements with the sides joining the nodes at subsequent time levels oriented along the characteristic lines of the hyperbolic partial differential equation associated with the Burgers' equation.This method is capable of solving the Burgers' equation accurately for values of viscosity ranging from very small to large. The utility and accuracy of the method are demonstrated by a number of examples and a comparison of the numerical results with the exact solution is presented in one case.

    Notes: The discretization of the media at all spatial co-ordinates but one is presented here. This partial discretization leads to continuous finite elements as opposed to fully discrete ones and the problem resolves, for the cases presented here, into a set of linear differential equations rather than algebraic equations. The general problem of first derivative functionals in elastostatics is considered and it is shown, in general, how the continuous finite elements required for the solution may be obtained. Plane states, axisymmetric and three-dimensional continuous elements are obtained to illustrate application to particular cases.Different methods of solution for the set of differential equations are discussed and it is shown that several existing and widely used finite element related techniques are particular cases of this local partial discretization. Three numerical examples are solved to demonstrate the good comparison obtained between the numerical and the exact solutions. The semi-infinite examples included also illustrate the treatment of these types of problems without the use of fictitious boundaries.

    Notes: For a wide calss of finite element matrices integrated numerically rather than exactly, a definable number of sampling points is found to be sufficient for keeping their theoretical properties unchanged. A systematic criterion limiting the number of possible point configurations for numerical quadrature formulas on triangles is established. Some new high order formulas are presented. Tables containing optional formulas with respect to minimum number of sampling points and required degrees of accuracy are given. They are arranged so as to assist with selection of suitable quadrature formulas for finite element computer programming.

    Notes: The approximation of normal derivatives along a curved boundary becomes a major difficulty in obtaining finite difference solutions for irregular regions. A number of authors (for-example, Allen,1 Fox,2 Greenspan3 and Parker and Ma4) have suggested various solutions to this problem. However, most of these suggested methods are fairly cumbersome to use since they require the use of different formulas for various combinations of mesh and boundary geometries. This note shows a different way to approximate a quite general boundary condition along curved boundaries. The method uses a uniformly spaced mesh, is simple, general, relatively easy to program and appears to give accurate results.

    Notes: In many systems it is known a priori, that some states are ony weakly coupled with others. If such systems are solved on parallel processor it is possible to partition the states in such a way that one set of states is assigned to one processor and the other set of weakly coupled states to another. Computations can then be done in parallel. Because of the weak coupling it may not be necessary for information from the two sets to be communicated to each other for many integration steps. This can result in significant cost savings. In this paper, a partitined Runge - Kutta scheme is formulated for use on weakly coupleld systems of ordinary differential equations. An error expression is derived which provides a means for predicting the number of step sizes over which the partitioned formulas can be used in terms of a prespecified error tolerance. Numerical examples are presented both to verify the error expressions and to compare solutions using partitioned and unpartitioned schemes.

    Notes: The diferential equations governing two-phase flow through a porous medium are derived and the space discretization is carried out by the Galerkin finite element method. An examination of the eigenvalues of the resulting system follows in order to decide on a suitable stability criterion to be satisfied by the time-stepping algorithm. A class of time-stepping schemes is introduced and their behaviour when applied to a specific problem is analyzed. The aim is to achieve an adequate modelling of the water-oil interface and to preserve reasonable values of the capillary pressure. A technique to clustering the mesh around the interface is used to improved the modelling, and a boundary condition based on the relative mobilities of the two fiuids is imposed to enable the program to calculate the water-oil ratio after breakthrough. The effect of lumping the mass matrix is then examined with a view to reducting the surge in the values obtained for the capillary pressure. Finally an optimum method is suggested for use as a starting algorithm for more sophisticated time-stepping schemes.
