Description: ONERA's refractory DS composites were cited as materials required for use in advanced aircraft turbines, operating at high temperatures. These materials were found to be reliable in the construction of turbine blades. Requirements for a blade material in aircraft turbines operating at higher temperatures were compared with the actual performance as found in COTAC DS composite testing. The structure and properties of the more fully developed 74 and 741 types were specified. High temperature structural stability, impact of thermal and mechanical fatigue, oxidation resistance and coating capability were thoroughly evaluated. The problem of cooling passages in DS eutectic blades is also outlined.

Description: The problem of general protection of cooled blades of complex internal structure was solved by a method called SF technique which makes possible the protection of both external and internal surfaces, as well as those of the orifices of cooling air, whatever their diameter. The SF method is most often applied in the case of pack process, at controlled or high activity; it can be of use on previously uncoated parts, but also on pieces already coated by a thermochemical, chemical or PVD method. The respective thickness of external and internal coatings may be precisely predetermined, no parasitic particle being liable to remain inside the parts after application of the protecting treatment. Results obtained to date by application of this method are illustrated by the presentation and examination of a various selection of advanced turbo engines.

Description: Emissions and performance characteristics were determined for two full annulus modular combustors operated to near stoichiometric fuel air ratios. The tests were conducted to obtain stoichiometric data at inlet air temperatures from 756 to 894 K and to determine the effects of a flat plate circular flame stabilizer with upstream fuel injection and a contraswirl flame stabilizer with downstream fuel injection. Levels of unburned hydrocarbons were below 0.50 gram per kilogram of fuel for both combustors and thus there was no detectable difference in the two methods of fuel injection. The contraswirl flame stabilizer did not produce the level of mixing obtained with a flat plate circular flame stabilizer. It did produce higher levels of oxides of nitrogen, which peaked at a fuel air ratio of 0.037. For the flat plate circular flame stabilizer, oxides of nitrogen emission levels were still increasing with fuel air ratio to the maximum tested value of 0.045.

Description: Local blowing on the profile suction side of the turbine guide wheel blades can be effective in preventing the propagation of secondary flows that is, the transport of casing and hub boundary layers by pressure gradients. Some preliminary results on how the blowing should be accomplished in order to influence the secondary flows in the desired manner are given. The effectiveness of blowing is demonstrated. Blowing is also seen to be more effective than using boundary layer slots as far as diminishing losses in the rim zones is concerned.

Description: Some of the most dramatic increases in the performance of turbojet and turbofan aircraft engines have been obtained as a result of increased thermodynamic cycle temperatures made possible by the use of film cooling techniques. The realization of the potential performance gains, however, is only possible if the quantity of cooling air and the aerodynamic mixing losses resulting from the injection of coolant in the form of film on the flowpath surfaces are minimized. Such a minimization requires a more complete understanding of the relationship between cooling and aerodynamics. A review is conducted of tests which have been conducted to determine the effects of coolant injection on turbine performance. The results obtained in the tests are compared with an analytical technique developed for predicting coolant injection effects. Particular attention is given to the effects of turbine cooling on overall cycle thermodynamic efficiency, taking into account incremental changes in turbine thermodynamic efficiency for various incremental changes in coolant flow rate.

Description: The Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Signature Transformation (MLEST) algorithm is used to obtain maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) of affine transformation. The algorithm has been evaluated for three sets of data: simulated (training and recognition segment pairs), consecutive-day (data gathered from Landsat images), and geographical-extension (large-area crop inventory experiment) data sets. For each set, MLEST signature extension runs were made to determine MLE values and the affine-transformed training segment signatures were used to classify the recognition segments. The classification results were used to estimate wheat proportions at 0 and 1% threshold values.

Description: A technique has been developed for simulating the effects of haze, sun angle, and background reflectance in Landsat data and correcting for them. The atmospheric model assumes a two-layer atmosphere: a Rayleigh scattering molecular layer and a Mie scattering haze layer next to the earth's surface. Reflection and transmission matrices describe the reflection and transmission properties of the plane parallel scattering layers. The multispectral scanner response is computed for various values of the parameters under evaluation. This yields expressions for Landsat gray-scale levels used for determining the effect of changes in any parameter. The Atmospheric Correction computer program is used to determine the haze level from the data, to compute the reflectance, and to interpolate in order to find the correction coefficients necessary to make the desired correction.

Description: This report describes the results of a study involving the use of computer-aided analysis techniques applied to Landsat MSS data for identification and area estimation of winter wheat in Kansas and corn and soybeans in Indiana. Key elements of the approach included use of aerial photography for classifier training, stratification of Landsat data and extension of training statistics to areas without training data, and classification of a systematic sample of pixels from each county. Major results and conclusions are: (1) Landsat data was adequate for accurate identification and area estimation of winter wheat in Kansas, but corn and soybean estimates for Indiana were less accurate; (2) computer-aided analysis techniques can be effectively used to extract crop identification information from Landsat MSS data, and (3) systematic sampling of entire counties made possible by computer classification methods resulted in very precise area estimates at county as well as district and state levels.

This technique employs manual, Landsat full frame-based wheat or cultivated land proportion estimates from a large number of segments comprising a first sample phase to optimally allocate a smaller phase two sample of computer or manually processed segments. Application to the Kansas Southwest CRD for 1974 produced a wheat acreage estimate for that CRD within 2.42 percent of the USDA SRS-based estimate using a lower CRD inventory budget than for a simulated reference LACIE system. Factor of 2 or greater cost or precision improvements relative to the reference system were obtained

Description: A description is presented of some of the recent advances in the technology of turbofan engine noise reduction, taking into account turbomachinery noise sources, new fans for low noise, fan and core noise suppression, and a new program for improving static noise testing of fans and engines. The problem of jet noise has been substantially reduced in connection with the lower jet velocities employed in the case of the high bypass turbofan engines. The dominant noise sources are now related to the turbomachinery with the fan stage, the compressor, and the turbine. Since the fan stage is the primary source of turbomachinery noise, it has been considered in a major part of the investigations designed to reduce turbofan engine noise.

Description: Atmospheric effects were taken into account in a study of the variation of energy reflected and energy emitted from a natural target under several conditions of temperature and emittance. For the study, atmospheric transmittance was represented through use of an empirical midlatitude summer model. Results showed that the ratio of energy emitted to energy reflected from a target is much less than unity at 3.5 microns, equal to unity at 4 microns, and much greater than unity at 4.6 microns (for high temperatures and emittances). These theoretical findings agreed closely with spectroradiometric data on soils.

Description: Aircraft overflights to obtain canopy temperatures of six differentially irrigated plots of durum wheat were made at Phoenix, Arizona on 1 and 29 April 1976. The data were acquired by a Texas Instruments model RS-25 infrared line scanner operating in the 8 to 14 micrometer bandpass region. Concurrently, plant water tension was measured on the ground with the Scholander pressure bomb technique. The results indicated that canopy temperatures acquired by aircraft about an hour and a half past solar noon correlated well with presunrise plant water tension - a parameter directly related to plant growth and development. The aircraft data also showed significant within-field canopy temperature variability, indicating the superiority of the synoptic view provided by aircraft over the more spotty view obtained by ground-operated infrared thermometers.

Description: Strip mines in the New River Drainage Basin of Tennessee were studied through use of Landsat-1 imagery and aircraft photography. A multilevel analysis, involving conventional photo interpretation techniques, densitometric methods, multispectral analysis and statistical testing was applied to the data. The Landsat imagery proved adequate for monitoring large-scale change resulting from active mining and land-reclamation projects. However, the spatial resolution of the satellite imagery rendered it inadequate for assessment of many smaller strip mines, in the region which may be as small as a few hectares.

Description: Theoretical and experimental determinations of the emittance of soils and leaves are reviewed, and an error analysis of emittance and spectral emittance measurements is developed as an aid to remote sensing applications. In particular, an equation for the upper bound of the absolute error in an emittance determination is derived. The absolute error is found to decrease with an increase in contact temperature and to increase with an increase in environmental integrated radiant flux density. The difference between temperature and band radiance temperature is plotted as a function of emittance for the wavelength intervals 4.5 to 5.5 microns, 8 to 13.5 microns and 10.2 to 12.5 microns.

Description: Four-band multispectral aerial photography and a color additive viewer were employed to identify forest cover types in Northern Alabama. The multispectral photography utilized the blue, green, red and near-infrared spectral regions and was made with black and white infrared film. On the basis of color differences alone, a differentiation between conifers and hardwoods was possible; however, supplementary information related to forest ecology proved necessary for the differentiation of various species of pines and hardwoods.

Description: A scanning radiometer was used to determine the effect of airstream velocity on the mean drop diameter of water sprays produced by pressure atomizing and air atomizing fuel nozzles used in previous combustion studies. Increasing airstream velocity from 23 to 53.4 meters per second reduced the Sauter mean diameter by approximately 50 percent with both types of fuel nozzles. The use of a sonic cup attached to the tip of an air assist nozzle reduced the Sauter mean diameter by approximately 40 percent. Test conditions included airstream velocities of 23 to 53.4 meters per second at 293 K and atmospheric pressure.

Description: Methods for creating color thematic maps and land use tabulations, employing both Landsat imagery and computer image processing, are discussed. The system, the Multiple Input Land Use System (MILUS) has been tested in the metropolitan section of Dayton, Ohio. Training areas for land use were first digitized by coordinates and then transformed onto an image of white lines on a black background. This image was added to a Landsat image of the same area. Then multispectral classification was performed. A tape of digitized census tract boundaries was computer interfaced to yield an image of tract boundaries on a background registered to the thematic land-use map. Using a data management system, the data were then used to produce figures for the area and percent of land use in each tract. Future work is expected to convert most of the steps into interactive processing. This would greatly reduce the time needed to edit and register the data sets.

Description: Multidate Landsat imagery has been applied for crop identification purposes in Kern County, California. The county's arid climate provides complete sets of cloud-free imagery throughout the crop-growing season. Both manual and digital techniques are used to study the value of the data, and a semiautomated video system is used to extract densitometric data from Landsat transparencies. It is noted that temporal variations in single-date classification performance and increases in multidate performance are caused by the physiological and phenological differences between types of crops. These differences may be used to introduce crop calendar data into satellite crop surveys.

Description: A hemispherical inlet flow control device was tested on a 50.8 cm. (20-inch) diameter fan stage in the NASA-Lewis Anechoic Chamber. The control device used honeycomb and wire mesh to reduce turbulence intensities entering the fan. Far field acoustic power level results showed about a 5 dB reduction in blade passing tone and about 10 dB reduction in multiple pure tone sound power at 90% design fan speed with the inlet device in place. Hot film cross probes were inserted in the inlet to obtain data for two components of the turbulence at 65 and 90% design fan speed. Without the flow control device the axial intensities were below 1.0%, while the circumferential intensities were almost twice this value. The inflow control device significantly reduced the circumferential turbulence intensities and also reduced the axial length scale.

Description: Combustor internal fluctuating pressure and far-field noise generated in a YF-102 turbofan engine are investigated; combustor internal measurements are also made in a duct-component test facility operating over a range of conditions encompassing those characteristic of the aircraft engine. Although directly measured spectra for the engine and the duct-component test facility show discrepancies, the results of coherence function, transfer function and phase relationship comparisons suggest that the internal dynamics of the combustor as an acoustic source may be preserved in a component test facility.

Description: It is known that the noise generated by inverted-velocity-profile coaxial (without center plug) and coannular (with center plug) nozzles should be modeled as the combined contributions of various source regions and noise generation mechanisms. In this paper, an empirical noise-prediction model is described which considers the noise generated by two jet-mixing regions and two potential regions of shock/turbulence interaction. Results calculated from the empirical model are compared with model-scale experimental data for static and simulated flight conditions. These comparisons are made for cases where both streams are subsonic, where the outer stream is supersonic with the inner stream subsonic, and where both streams are supersonic. The cases considered cover a range of inner-to-outer-stream area ratios and include both coaxial and coannular nozzles. It is shown that the model gives reasonable predictions of absolute noise spectra and even better predictions of incremental changes.

Description: Future STOL aircraft may utilize engine-over-the-wing (OTW) installations in which the exhaust nozzles are located above and separated from the upper surface of the wing. An external jet-flow deflector can be used with such installations to provide flow attachment to the wing/flap surfaces for lift augmentation. In the present work, the deflector noise in the flyover plane measured with several model-scale nozzle/deflector/wing configurations is examined. The deflector-associated noise is correlated in terms of velocity and geometry parameters. The data also indicate that the effective overall sound pressure level of the deflector-associated noise peaks in the forward quadrant near 40 deg from the inlet axis.

Description: In this paper, a failure detection and correction strategy for turbofan engines is discussed. This strategy allows continuing control of the engines in the event of a sensor failure. An extended Kalman filter is used to provide the best estimate of the state of the engine based on currently available sensor outputs. Should a sensor failure occur the control is based on the best estimate rather than the sensor output. The extended Kalman filter consists of essentially two parts, a nonlinear model of the engine and up-date logic which causes the model to track the actual engine. Details on the model and up-date logic are presented. To allow implementation, approximations are made to the feedback gain matrix which result in a single feedback matrix which is suitable for use over the entire flight envelope. The effect of these approximations on stability and response is discussed. Results from a detailed nonlinear simulation indicate that good control can be maintained even under multiple failures.

Description: A multivariable control design procedure based on output feedback regulator (OFR) theory is applied to the F100 turbofan engine. Results for the OFR design are compared to a design based on linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory. This LQR design was obtained as part of the F100 Multivariable Control Synthesis (MVCS) program. In the MVCS program the LQR feedback control was designed in a reduced dimension state space and then applied to the original system. However, the OFR feedback control is designed in the full order state space and thus eliminates any need for model reduction techniques. Using the performance measure and control structure of the MVCS program LQR design, an equivalent OFR feedback control is obtained. The flexibility of the OFR as a control design procedure is demonstrated and differing feedback control structures are evaluated.

Description: Linear optimal control theory is applied to the control synthesis of a high bypass ratio, variable pitch, turbofan engine. The basic control philosophy is to use only a low order dynamic model of the plant coupled with the concept of integral-output states so as to maintain control simplicity yet guarantee integral control of thrust, turbine temperature and other important engine outputs. Linear simulation results indicate that the control system developed provides rapid control of small thrust perturbations and quickly eliminates the effect of unmodelled thrust and temperature disturbances. Large thrust accelerations are obtained in about one half second while the control maintains negligible overshoot in temperature and stall margins.

Description: The Routh approximation technique is applied in the frequency domain to a 16th order state variable turbofan engine model. The results obtained motivate the extension of the frequency domain formulation of the Routh method to the time domain to handle the state variable formulation directly. The time domain formulation is derived and a new characterization, which specifies all possible Routh similarity transformations, is given. This characterization is computed by the solution of two eigenvalue-eigenvector problems. The application of the time domain Routh technique to the state variable engine model is described and some results are given. Additional computational problems are discussed including an optimization procedure which can improve the approximation accuracy by taking advantage of the transformation characterization.

Description: Minimum-time accelerations of the F100 turbofan engine are presented. A piecewise-linear engine model, having three state variables and four control variables, is used to obtain the minimum-time solutions. The linear model which applies at a given time in the trajectory is determined by calculating a normalized 'distance' from the current state to the equilibrium state associated with each linear model. The linear model associated with the closest equilibrium point is then used. The control histories for the minimum-time solutions are used as input to a nonlinear simulation of the F100 engine to verify the accuracy of the piecewise-linear solutions.

Description: Following Rosenbrock's ideas regarding the advantages of dominance in linear multivariable control systems, a new graphical technique is used for the design of compensators that achieve dominance. The technique is illustrated with an application to the problem of designing compensators for a linear turbofan-engine model. The resulting design is put into perspective by examining it in the light of two other multivariable frequency-domain methods. One, MacFarlane's method of characteristic loci, is used to realize a final design for stability and low interaction. The other is a direct technique based upon the algebraic expansion of the determinant of the return difference in terms of it's elements. Results from simulations carried out on the NASA DYNGEN software are included.

Description: Low-altitude aircraft scanner data were employed in simulating the spatial resolution, radiometric sensitivity and spectral bandwidth parameters of the proposed Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM). The 30 to 40 m resolution of the TM was found to provide significant improvement over current Landsat resolution (50 to 60 m) in crop mensuration, especially for Western Europe and India where field sizes average from one to four hectares. In terms of radiometric sensitivity, a noise equivalent reflectance value of 0.5% was held to be necessary for discrimination of spectrally similar data; in addition, all of the six proposed TM spectral bands were shown to be necessary for monitoring at some point during the growing season.

Description: A simulation of imagery from the upcoming Landsat-D Thematic Mapper was accomplished by using selected channels of aircraft 24-channel multispectral scanner data. The purpose was to simulate Thematic Mapper 30-meter resolution imagery, to compare its spectral quality with the original aircraft MSS data, and to determine changes in thematic classification accuracy for the simulated imagery. The original resolution of approximately 7.5 meters IFOV and simulated resolution of 15, 30, and 60 meters were used to indicate the trend of spectral quality and classification accuracy. The study was based in a 6.5 square kilometer area of urban Los Angeles having a diversity of land use. The original imagery was reduced in resolution by two related methods: pixel matrix averaging, and matrix smoothing with a unity box filter, followed by matrix averaging. Thematic land use classification using training sites and a Bayesian maximum-likelihood algorithm was performed at three levels of standard deviation - 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 sigma. Plots of relative standard deviation showed that for larger training sites with a normal distribution of data, as the resolution decreased, the distribution range of density values decreased. Also, the classification accuracies for three levels of standard deviation increased as resolution decreased. However, the indication is that a point of diminishing returns had been reached, and 30 meters IFOV should be the best for multispectral classification of urban scenes.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. This study has shown that subtle variations in fold axes, fold form, and stratigraphic thickness can be delineated. Many of the conclusions were based on extrapolation in similitude to different scales. A conceptual model was derived for the Tyrone-Mount Union lineament. In this model, the lineament the morphological expression of a zone of fracture concentrations which penetrated basement rocks and may have acted as a curtain to regional stresses or as a domain boundary between uncoupled adjacent crustal blocks.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Monitoring of excess humidity was possible at the Baragan test site. Qualitative improvements of 20-50% were obtained in regards to soil inventory in the eastern Danube Delta, comparing data with conventional maps. The pedological situation was observed after drainage in impounded enclosures. The appearance of stagnate water was surveyed due to difference in color shades on LANDSAT imagery. Areas with gluey soils, such as lake bottoms rich in CaCO3 and shell grist, were clearly represented. Sediment discharges into the sea at the Danube mouth and plumes over 100 km at sea could be easily distinguished on LANDSAT MSS 4 and 5.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Both LANDSAT imagery and digital data were studied for usefulness in surveying water conditions of Minnesota lakes. Initial consideration was given to analysis of LANDSAT image densities because of the low technologic and cost requirements. The techniques employed, however, yield inconsistent and unreliable results. A set of criteria are given for using LANDSAT data in identification of three categories of particulate contaminants in Lake Superior. A linear transformation giving the relationship between the residual LANDSAT intensities and concentrations of three contaminants was obtained from correlation of remote sensing data with insitu measurements. LANDSAT imagery was found useful in placing peat bogs and fens in their respective geologic settings. Artificial disturbances and drainageways in peatlands could be recognized and classified.

Description: A number of prominent linears in basement terrane of the Peninsular Ranges appeared on Skylab images. In most cases, they were represented by straight or gently curved valleys; however, detailed field investigations have shown that several of these linears mark previously unmapped faults which form two distinct fault sets; one set trends northeast, the other west-northwest. No indications of recent movement were present on these faults which were truncated by seismically active, northwest trending fault zones such as the Elsinore and San Jacinto. Right-lateral separation is demonstrable on the northeast trending set.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Two thermal anomalies, A at 2740 m altitude on the north slope, and B between 2650 and 2750 m altitude on the southwest slope at the contact of the dacite summit dome of Mount St. Helens, Washington were confirmed by aerial infrared scanner surveys between 1971 and 1973. LANDSAT 1 data collection platform 6166, emplaced at site B anomaly, transmitted 482 sets of temperature values in 1973 and 1974, suitable for estimating the differential radiatin emission as 84 W/sq m, approximately equivalent to the Fourier conductive flux of 89 W/sq m in the upper 15 cm below the surface. The differential geothermal flux, including heat loss via evaporation and convection, was estimated at 376 W/sq m. Total energy yield of Mount St. Helens probably ranges between 0.1 and 0.4 x 10 to the 6th power W.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. A stratified random sample using LANDSAT band 5 and 7 panchromatic prints resulted in estimates of water in counties with sampling errors less than + or - 9% (67% probability level). A forest inventory using a four band LANDSAT color composite resulted in estimates of forest area by counties that were within + or - 6.7% and + or - 3.7% respectively (67% probability level). Estimates of forest area for counties by computer assisted techniques were within + or - 21% of operational forest survey figures and for all counties the difference was only one percent. Correlations of airborne terrain reflectance measurements with LANDSAT radiance verified a linear atmospheric model with an additive (path radiance) term and multiplicative (transmittance) term. Coefficients of determination for 28 of the 32 modeling attempts, not adverseley affected by rain shower occurring between the times of LANDSAT passage and aircraft overflights, exceeded 0.83.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. The wheat yield model was applied to the major wheat-growing areas of the US and India. In the US Great Plains, estimates from the winter and spring wheat models agreed closely with USDA-SRS values in years with the lowest yields, but underestimated in years with the highest yields. Application to the Eastern Plains and Northwest indicated the importance of cultural factors, as well as meteorological ones in the model. It also demonstrated that the model could be used, in conjunction with USDA-SRRS estimates, to estimate yield losses due to factors not included in the model, particularly diseases and freezes. A fixed crop calendar for India was built from a limited amount of available plot data from that country. Application of the yield model gave measurable evidence that yield variation from state to state was due to different mixes of levels of meteorological and cultural factors.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Visual interpretation of 1:125,000 color LANDSAT prints produced timely level 1 maps of accuracies in excess of 80% for agricultural land identification. Accurate classification of agricultural land via digital analysis of LANDSAT CCT's required precise timing of the date of data collection with mid to late June optimum for western South Dakota. The LANDSAT repetitive nine day cycle over the state allowed the surface areas of stockdams and small reservoir systems to be monitored to provide a timely approximation of surface water conditions on the range. Combined use of DIRS, K-class, and LANDSAT CCT's demonstrated the ability to produce aspen maps of greater detail and timeliness than was available using US Forest Service maps. Visual temporal analyses of LANDSAT imagery improved highway map drainage information and were used to prepare a seven county drainage network. An optimum map of flood-prone areas was developed, utilizing high altitude aerial photography and USGS maps.

Description: The ability of the Nimbus 5 ESMR to characterize the moisture condition of the uppermost portion of the soil was evaluated. In the absence of snow cover, ESMR-5 brightness temperatures were compared with computed upper soil zone moisture values from a soil moisture budgeting scheme. The study was conducted over the U.S. Great Plains for the late summer and early fall in 1974 and 1975. Favorable results were limited by the relatively high vegetative cover and infrequent substantial rainfalls at that time of year. Satisfactory characterization of the general moisture condition was deemed feasible in agricultural regions at times of the year when fields were nearly bare. An additional evaluation demonstrated that ESMR-6 data could delineate the active boundary of a snow pack.

Theoretical studies were made of the inverse scattering problem yielding some preliminary results concerning the determination of the dielectric constant of the snow layer. The experimental results lead to the following conclusions: (1) snow layering affects backscatter; (2) layer response was significant up to 45 degrees of incidence; (3) wetness modifies snow layer effects; and (4) frequency modulation masks the layer response.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. A linear regression between percent nonvegetative land and the time variable was completed for the two sample areas. Sample area no. 1 showed an average vegetation loss of 1.901% per year, while the loss for sample area no. 2 amounted to 5.889% per year. Two basic reasons for the difference were assumed to play a role: the difference in access potential and the amount of already fragmented vegetation complexes in existence during the first year of the comparative analysis - 1970. Sample area no. 2 was located closer to potential access points and was more fragmented initially.
