In:  Supplement to: Vinogradov, Mikhail E; Shushkina, Elvira A; Kukina, Irina N (1976): Functional characteristics of a planktonic community in an equatorial upwelling region. Oceanology, 16, 67-76
    Publication Date: 2023-07-09
Description: An analysis was made of composition and content of nutrients, salts, particulate and dissolved organic matter, and various plankton groups in a series of samples collected by a 140-liter sampling bottle to depth up to 150 m at 4 equatorial stations between 97° and 154°W. Large and small phytoplankton, bacteria (aggregated and dispersed), heterotrophic flagellates, infusorians, radiolarians, foraminifers, fine filter-feeders, small and large, mostly herbivorous copepods, cyclopoids, predatory calanoids, and other predators were investigated separately. Trophic relations between these elements are established from personal and published data, and rate of their metabolism and some other physiological parameters are determined. Such functional characteristics as extent of satisfaction of food requirements of organisms belonging to various trophic groups, intensity of trophic relations, balance between production and consumption by individual elements of the community, ecological efficiency, and net and specific production of the groups distinguished, of individual trophic levels, of total zooplankton, and of the community as a whole are calculated. Variations of these characteristics along the equator with decreasing upwelling intensity are examined and their possible causes and mechanisms are discussed.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-20
Description: The lipids and kerogens of 15 sediment samples from Site 547 (ranging from Pleistocene to Early Jurassic/Triassic) and 4 from Site 545 (Cretaceous) have been analyzed. A strong terrestrial contribution of organic matter was found, and significant autochthonous inputs were also present, especially at Site 545. Both strongly reduced and highly oxidized sediments have been found in the Cenozoic and Jurassic samples of Site 547. On the contrary, all the Cretaceous sections of Sites 547 and 545 are anoxic. Sediments from anoxic paleoenvironments are immature and have a high content of sterenes, diasterenes, steradienes, hopenes, and ßß hopanes. Samples from oxic paleoenvironments are mainly mature and their content of hopenes and steriod structures is below the detection level. Nevertheless, their hopane distributions have the immature ßß homologs as the predominant molecular markers. For Site 545 the most abundant molecular markers are ring A monoaromatic steranes, and their presence is attributed to microbial and chemical transformations during early diagenesis.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-11
Description: Results of petrographic, chemical and X-ray studies of zeolites in sediments in the Transpacific lithological profile from the coast of Japan to the coast of Mexico are reported. For ocean phillipsites constancy of Si/Al ratio (2.44-2.87) and unstable cation composition in quantitative predominance of potassium over sodium are characteristic. Two groups of ocean phillipsites are distinguished: of deep-water basins and of submarine rises. The first spread over broad areas of the pelagic zone, and are formed by diagenetic transformation of fine dispersed pyroclastic material in minimum sedimentation rates, the latter occur locally - in areas of basaltic volcanism manifestations.

Description: Manganese nodules occurring within marine sediments of presumably Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene age from cores obtained by the Argentine oceanographic vessel ARA Islas Orcadas in 1977 on the Malvinas (Falkland) Plateau and neighbouring Scotia Sea were studied with the aim of comparing them with other fossil nodules found on the mainland of Argentina that were also ascribed to the marine environment. After optical mineralogical, chemical, X-ray and trace element analysis, the studied "nodules" proved to be actually wacke clasts cemented by manganese oxides with a high Fe/Mn ratio corresponding to a continental environment. The studied "nodules" thus differ from the Argentine mainland nodules and are supposed to have been transported from continental environments and then deposited in the marine realms. The wacke clasts became then nuclei for the deposition of the marine manganese oxides of the coatings. The proportion of trace elements, which is high, suggests the growth of the nodules in the marine environment.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Manganese oxide crusts similar to those reported from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rift valley by Scott et al., 1974 (https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.848726) were dredged at two sites near the Galapagos spreading axis on ocean floor estimated from magnetic anomalies to be 2.4 and 0.3 m.y. old. Compared to the typical ocean-floor manganese deposits attributed to precipitation from seawater, the 2-6 cm thick manganese crusts reported here exhibit very low Fe/Mn and low 232Th/238U ratios, as well as lower transition metal and higher manganese concentrations. The manganese crusts were deposited several orders of magnitude faster than the more common hydrogenous nodules; this fact together with other geochemical characteristics and the geophysical environment suggests the manganese deposits reported here are of hydrothermal origin.

Description: Morphological, mineralogical and chemical analysis are reported for a metalliferous encrustation from a seamount in the Gulf of Guinea, South Atlantic. The results are compared with published data on encrustation from similar environments. The morphology and mineralogy indicate a crust formed on the exposed rock surface with some agglutination of foram debris. Comparison of the abundance patterns for transition elements with that of known data suggests that some enrichment had resulted from the high primary productivity at this site.

Description: During U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public hearings held in 1973, 1974 and 1975 prior to Texas Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) oil and gas lease sales, concern was expressed by the National Marine Fisheries Service, scientists from Texas A&M and the University of Texas and private citizens over the possible environmental impact of oil and gas drilling and production operations on coral reefs and fishing banks in or adjacent to lease blocks to be sold. As a result, certain restrictive regulations concerning drilling operations in the vicinity of the well documented coral reefs and biostromal communities at the East and West Flower Gardens were established by BLM, and Signal Oil Company was required to provide a biological and geological baseline study of the less well known Stetson Bank before a drilling permit could be issued. Considering the almost total lack of knowledge of the geology and biotic communities associated with the South Texas OCS banks lying in or near lease blocks to be offered for sale in 1975, BLM contracted with Texas A&M University to provide the biological and geological baseline information required to facilitate judgments as to the extent and nature of restrictive regulations on drilling near these banks which might be required to insure their protection. In pursuit of this, scientists from Texas A&M University were to direct their attention toward assessments of ground fish populations, unique biological and geological features, substratum type and distribution, and the biotic and geologic relationships between these banks and those farther north.

Description: The Manihiki Plateau is an elevated area of shallow oceanic crust in the South Pacific; it was formed during Early Cretaceous time by profuse outpourings of basalt. DSDP Holes 317, 317A, and 317B, on which this account is based, are situated in a basinal area on the so called High Plateau, the shallowest part of the volcanic edifice, where depths range between 2000 and 3000 meters. The oldest sediments cored are Lower Cretaceous greenish-black volcaniclastics traversed by reddish-purple clay seams; these deposits commonly show evidence of redeposition, but the only possible shallow-water remains found are very rare bryozoan and echinoderm fragments.

Description: Dredging in the Danger Island Troughs, which divide the High and Western parts of the Manihiki Plateau, recovered several fresh pebbles of olivine tholeiite and tholeiite, a single pebble of highly altered gabbroic cumulate, and several dozen pebbles of altered variolitic basalt. Troughs suggests that at one time the troughs were the site of active faulting. A tectonic model for the evolution of the plateau, consistent with a fracture zone origin for the Danger Island Troughs, requires the formation of the Manihiki Plateau at a triple junction of the Pacific, Farallon, and Antarctic plates.

Description: The Bauer Deep is the depression between the active East Pacific Rise on the west and the extinct Galapagos Rise on the east. The selection of Site 319 was based on a detailed survey of the Bauer Basin during Yaloc-13, Leg 3. Leg 3. It is in a basin about 8 km wide (east-west) at 13°OO.8'S, which is part of a broadly faulted zone on the low western flank of the Galapagos Rise. Site 320 and 321 where located in order to survey the Nazca plate. The objectives for Site 320 were (1) to core basalt continuously as deep as possible, with one and possibly two re-entries; (2) to determine the history of the eastern Nazca plate for the last 30 to 40 m.y., (3) to determine the effectiveness of the Peru-Chile Trench as a barrier to turbidity current dispersal. Site 321 is located on the eastern edge of the Nazca plate immediately south of the Mendafia Fracture Zone. The objectives for Site 321 were similar as those for Site 320.

Description: Because of its position between the North Atlantic and the Arctic oceans, its young age, small size, and diversity of geological structures, the Norwegian-Greenland Sea provided a unique target for deep drilling on Leg 38 of the Glomar Challenger. From studies of the sediments and basement rocks it was expected to gain insight particularly as to the following: 1) The tectonic framework and evolution of this area with special emphasis on the continental margins and on questions concerned with shifts of spreading axis and existence of foundered continental areas. 2) The youngest times of existence of land bridges between Eurasia and North America and the effect these land bridges had on water circulation and paleoclimates. 3) The date of the initiation of glaciation and dates of glacial advances and retreats. 4) Description of the Tertiary marine microfauna and microflora of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, which are essentially unknown at present, and investigation of their similarity with microfauna and microflora from other areas.

Description: The sites drilled on Leg 35 were selected to study the tectonic relationships and interactions between the Antarctic plate and the Antarctic Peninsula, the Scotia Arc, the southern Andes, and the Chile Ridge. Site 322 was drilled on the eastern end of the Bellingshausen Abyssal Plain where it is bounded by the Hero Fracture Zone to the northeast and the continental rise of Antarctica to the south. Site 323 was centrally located on the abyssal plain, about 30 miles west of the Eltanin Fracture Zone and about 150 miles north of the Antarctic continental rise. Site 324 was located on the gently sloping lower continental rise of Antarctica about 160 miles north of Thurston Island, the closest exposed land.

Description: Mesozoic benthic foraminifers, recovered from five single-bit holes drilled in the southern Gulf of Mexico on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 77 are rare, poorly preserved, and scattered throughout the dominantly redeposited sediments. The Mesozoic sequence at basin Sites 535 and 540 consists largely of laminated limestone with smaller amounts of skeletal limestone and pure pelagic limestone, whereas the Mesozoic sediments at basement Sites 536, 537, and 538 (Hole 538A) consist largely of oolitic-oncolitic limestone.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The abyssal circulation of the Pacific Ocean east of the East Pacific Rise is deduced from hydrographic data, supported by a few direct current measurements. Two main flow paths are recognized: across the Chile Rise into the Chile Basin, and thence northward into the Peru Basin and Panama Basin; and eastward across the East Pacific Rise into the Guatemala Basin and into Bauer Basin. Transform fault troughs are important passages allowing flow across the rises, and the Peru-Chile Trench is the principal channel for inflow to the Peru and Panama basins. The deep water that flows across the East Pacific Rise near the equator has a similar temperature structure to that in the southern Chile Basin, but it is less saline and has lower oxygen concentrations. Along both flow paths the bottom waters become warmer, less saline, and less oxygenated as a result of vertical mixing (intensified near sills), geothermal heating (concentrated at active spreading centers) and in situ decay of organic matter (especially beneath productive surface waters). The regional pattern of abyssal circulation may partly control the distribution of metalliferous pelagic sediments (including both fine-grained precipitates and manganese nodules) and the rates of dissolution of calcareous sediments. Where the deep thermohaline flow is accelerated in narrow passages between basins it has deeply eroded the sea floor and transports sediment as bed load. Steady currents measured in one of these passages exceeded 30 cm/s.

Description: The drilling plan for Leg 74 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project was designed to address three main scientific topics: (1) the history of the deep-water circulation in the southeastern Atlantic, (2) the nature and geologic evolution of the Walvis Ridge, and (3) the biostratigraphy and magnetic stratigraphy of this region. In order to study these subjects, a suite of five sites was drilled on the Walvis Ridge that extended from its crest (near 1000 m water depth) down its northwest flank into the Angola Basin to a depth of 4400 m.

Description: Leg 73 was the middle of five legs on South Atlantic paleoenvironments planned by the JOIDES Ocean Paleoenvironment (OP) Panel during the years from 1975 to 1980. The idea of drilling a transect of holes across the 30°S parallel was entertained soon after the drilling on Leg 3, during the first phase of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (1968/69), when the surprising discovery was made that the middle Miocene sediments of the South Atlantic were largely marls and red clays. The deposition of the red clays was obviously related to the intense dissolution of calcite during the middle Miocene, when the calcite-compensation level was elevated. The objectives and tactical planning for a transect across the east flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge just north of 30°S were outlined by the OP Panel more fully to the Planning Committee in July of 1978. After a piston core containing Paleocene sediments was taken in 1979 at the site in the Cape Basin at the foot of the Walvis Ridge this area was designated for DSDP Leg 73 and 74.

Description: The drilling of Leg 77 is part of an overall program by the JOIDES Passive Margin Panel to study the evolution of the western North Atlantic passive margin. The history of the central North Atlantic is probably the best known of all ocean basins, but the origin and history of the neighboring Gulf of Mexico are very much uncertain. Some geologists consider it the oldest ocean basin still in existence (Paleozoic), but others doubt the existence of "true" oceanic crust under the central Gulf. The nature and origin of the transitional crust and the overlying Mesozoic sedimentary sequences in the southeastern Gulf, therefore, was the main objective of Leg 77.

Description: Submarine photography and box cores described in this report were taken during the R/V Oceanographer Cruise RP-6-OC-75 in June 1975 over Area C of the DOMES project (Deep Ocean Mining Environmental Study). This Phase I of the DOMES project was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey under the auspices of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The purpose of DOMES project was to acquire the information necessary to provide both a timely and an independent assessment of the impact of deep ocean manganese nodule mining on the marine ecosystem before commercial mining operations begin. It was formulated in cooperation with the academic community and the mining industry. It consisted of a two-phase study, first to obtain basic information on the deep ocean environment and then to assess the impact of prototype mining operations on that environment.

Description: DOMES area C sediment is quite heterogeneous, but most commonly is classified as mud (clay minerals, quartz, and feldspar) or siliceous ooze. However, in several samples Fe-Mn micronodules, globules and aggreqates are the major sediment components. Calcareous nannofossil ooze characterized only one sample, core 18A-1-8 and calcite (reworked limestone?) is present in several other cores, but never as a major compoment. Volcanic ash (glassy mud) is the major sediment type in several cores.

Description: The major and minor element composition of ferromanganese nodules from DOMES Site A has been determined by X-ray fluorescence methods. Three phases appear to control the bulk compositions: Mn and Fe oxyhydroxides and aluminosilicates. Relatively wide compositional variations are evident throughout the area. Nodules with high Mn/Fe ratios, high Cu, Mg, Mo, Ni and Zn concentrations and high todorokite/-MnO2 ratios have gritty surface textures and are confined to an east-west trending depression with thin Quaternary sediment cover. Nodules with low Mn/Fe ratios, high concentrations of As, Ca, Ce, Co, La, P, Sr, Ti, V, Y and Zr and low todorokite/-MnO2 ratios have smooth surfaces and are confined to shallower areas with relatively thick Quaternary sediment to the north and south of the depression. All nodules in the area have compositions which are influenced by diagenesis, but those with the most marked diagenetic signature (high Mn/Fe and Cu/Ni ratios, low Ce/La ratios and more todorokite) are found in areas of very slow or non-existent sedimentation; many of these nodules are actually in contact with outcropping Tertiary sediment. This paradox may be resolved by postulating, by analogy with some shallow-water occurrences, that the nodules accrete from bottom waters which have enhanced particulate and dissolved metal contents derived from diagenetic reaction in areas remote from the site of nodule formation. The metals are supplied in a bottom flow (probably Antarctic Bottom Water) which also erodes, or prevents modern sedimentation in, the depression. Nodules on the flanks of the depression are not evidently affected by this flow and derive at least pan of their constituent metals from diagenetic reaction in the underlying Quaternary sediment. Apparently, abyssal diagenetic nodules can have an immediate and a remote diagenetic metal source. Metal fluxes derived from pore water dissolved metal gradients may not be relevant to particular accreting nodules if a significant fraction of their metals is derived from outside the area in which they form.

Description: The uptake of Ni and Co in the hydrous Mn oxide or the amorphous Fe-oxide phases of ferromanganese deposits in the oceans was studied by electron-microprobe analyses of 17 natural manganese nodules and by experiments on desorption-dissolution of these metals from synthetic Fe oxide or Mn oxides and natural nodule material. Ni was found to occur nearly always in the Mn-oxide phases of natural nodules, while Co occurs both in the Mn-oxide and Fe-oxide phases, with a slight preference for the latter. The solubility of Ni and Co (from coprecipitates of these metals with Fe hydroxides after aging) in seawater was found to depend strongly on the crystallinity of the host phase. The adsorption of Co by the synthetic Mn oxides from seawater was higher than that of Ni. The experimentally determined solubility of Ni and Co in seawater from natural nodule material is extremely low and matches the concentration range of these metals in ocean water.

Description: Volcanic rocks, dredged from depths greater than 1000 m on the Galapagos spreading center, show extreme chemical diversity, including rhyodacites, andesite, ferro-basalts, and low-K oceanic tholeiite. All samples have fresh glassy margins. The ferro-basalts contain up to 18.5% total iron as FeO and up to 3.75% TiO2, while the oceanic tholeiites are as low as 0.02% K2O. The ferro-basalts correlate with the previously proposed zone of high magnetic anomaly amplitudes which flank the Galapagos hot spot, and are consistent with a genesis by shallow fractional crystallization.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Measurements of Pb-210 activities, in conjunction with micropaleontological, geotechnical and sedimentological observations, on sediment cores have been used to characterize two distinctive bioturbation regimes on the continental slope and rise east of Newfoundland. On the rise (2600 m), excess Pb-210 is confined to the upper few centimeters of the coarser-grained sediments underlying the axis of the Western Boundary Undercurrent. The geological and geochemical evidence for a low rate of bioturbation in this high bottom current regime is consistent with a reduced population of deeper burrowing macrofauna, particularly the species Maldane sarsi. In contrast, a higher flux of organic-rich, fine-grained particulate material to the middle slope (1500 m water depth), and the comparatively stable sedimentological conditions that prevail in this low bottom current regime, have led to the active colonization of the sediment substrate by bioturbating organisms. Enhanced mixing of middle slope deposits is reflected by comparatively lower shear strengths within the upper 30 cm of the sediment column, and by the reduced variability of the sediment-depth distribution of the most abundant species of foraminifera. Excess Pb-210 has been transported downward from the sediment-water interface to depths greater than 12 cm. Some Pb-210 profiles from the middle slope can be interpreted in terms of a diffusion mixing model for which the biological mixing coefficients are of the order of 0.10-1.0 cm2/yr.Measurements of the two and three dimensional distribution of excess Pb-210 in one middle slope box core indicate that the mixing process in these sediments has a pronounced heterogeneous component on time scales of the same order as the half life of Pb-210 (22.3 yr). Spatial correlations between Pb-210 anomalies and artifacts of bioturbation observed in x-radiographs of the core suggest that Pb-210 maxima observed at depth may be the result of an inclined orientation of burrow structures which have introduced a significant lateral component to the downward transport of surficial sediments.

Description: Analyses of small samples extracted from different parts of a single manganese nodule have been reported by several investigators, clearly documenting the belief that a nodule is not homogeneous chemically, as a rule. The same sort of evidence has been gathered by use of the X-ray macroprobe and electron microprobe analyses. The X-ray probe work has shown clearly that chemical variations within a nodule can be correlated with optically recognizable mineral, and therefore optical study can tell much about chemical variations and obviate much probe analysis. As we have reported many times, optically anisotropic crystalline todorokite and birnessite contain the bulk of the Mn, Ni, and Cu in any nodule whereas optically isotropic and X-ray amorphous oxides contain most of the Fe and Co in the same nodule.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Manganese nodules from the Scotia Sea and Pacific Ocean sectors of the Southern Ocean display regional differences in chemical and mineralogical composition. Mn/Fe and todorokite/delta-MnO2 ratios decrease southeasterly from the Southwestern Pacific Basin to the Drake passage-Scotia Sea. Relative to Mn, the greatest enrichments of Co, Ti, V, Zn, Mo and Sn occur in Drake Passage-Scotia Sea nodules, while Ni and Cu are most enriched in the Southwestern Pacific Basin. Manganese mineralogy is directly related to the Mn/Fe ratio, so that todorokite rather than delta-MnO2 predominates when high manganese vs iron contents are found. Trace metal contents are also related to mineralogy, with high values of Ni, Cu, Zn and Sn, and low values of Co, Ti, V and Mo associated with high todorokite contents. Nodules having indistinct zeolitits/vesiculite nuclei tend to have Mn/Fe and todorokite/delta-MnO2 ratios significantly higher than average for the region in which they are found, whereas ferromanganese oxide fragments dredged from submarine rock surfaces usually have Mn/Fe and todorokite/delta-MnO2 ratios lower than regional average.

Description: Two Pacific Ocean manganese nodules, one from the ocean basin and one from a sea-mount, were examined in transmission electron microscopes at 100 and 650 kV. Of the many specimens examined, ten electron diffraction crystal spot patterns were identified. Sodium birnessite was observed six times and todorokite, Giavanoli's synthetic birnessite, hydrohausmanite and -Fe2O3 one time each. Ferric hydroxide was synthesized in the laboratory and shown to be the same as the primary iron mineral observed in the manganese nodules. The ferric hydroxide had a particle size range from 30 to around 450. Manganese oxide particles were frequently embedded in a mass of smaller ferric hydroxide particles.

Description: Metallic spherules from Central Pacific Ocean sediments (“Valdivia” expedition VA-05/1, 1973) were studied by means of microscopy and by electron microprobe analysis. The data suggest that most of the spherules are of meteoritic origin, i.e. ablation drops from meteorites as suggested in former studies on spherules from marine environment by Schmidt and Keil (1966), Finkelmann (1970, 1972) and others. The metallic spherules contain up to about 60% Ni, 37% Fe and 3% Co. Unusually high contents of Cr (up to 12%) were noted in some spherules. Some specimen being coated with Fe oxide could be mistaken for manganese micronodules always abundant in the sediments of the Central Pacific Ocean.

Description: Relationships among Th and Ra isotopes in nodule, sediment and water phases at MANOP Site S establish the most likely source for Th in the nodules, the frequency of nodule turning, and the similarity of micro and macro nodules. Manganese nodules and bottom waters have 230Th/232Th activity ratios considerably higher than other phases at this site suggesting that sea water is the likely source of Th for the nodules. Similar 230Th/232Th activity ratios in nodule tops and bottoms and in certain cases departure from expected 226Ra/230Th activity ratios in nodule tops and bottoms indicate that the nodules rotate every one to ten thousand years. The micro nodules have diffusion coefficients of Ra similar to macro nodule bottoms. I suggest that they may act as a carrier phase for transporting metals through oxic sediments to nodules.

Description: Ferromanganese micronodules have been found on Georges Bank, off the U.S. northeast coast, distributed throughout the surficial sediments within an area about 125 km long and at least 12 km wide. These coarse, sand-sized concretions have precipitated from metal-rich interstitial waters and contain many of the textural and structural features common to other neritic nodules. Most of the nodules have accreted around detrital grains, and X-ray powder diffraction analyses indicate the presence of geothite and vernadite ( delta -MnO sub(2)) in the ferromanganese layers. Chemical analyses of the micronodules, when compared with similar data on deep-sea manganese nodules, reveal lower Mn/Fe ratios, significantly higher concentrations of V and As, comparable values of Mo, and an order of magnitude less of Co, Ni, Ce and most other, metals.

Description: Petrological, mineralogical and chemical investigations of marine manganese nodules from the West Pacific revealed the intimate relation between the chemical and mineral compositions and the remarkable preferential partitioning of metal elements in the ferromanganese minerals. The microscopic observations of textures of manganese nodules tell the growth history of manganese nodules and the formation conditions of ferromanganese minerals. Chemical compositions of nodules from Komahashi-Daini Seamount are very similar to those of the nodules from marginal banks and seamounts. Compositional variations in the bulk composition of nodules collected from the same dredge haul are considerably small, suggesting the similarity of the growth history of individual nodules, although the contents of metal elements vary remarkably from layer to layer in a single nodule.

Description: In 1974, the Geological Survey of Japan began its systematic investigation of manganese nodules in the Central Pacific Basin on the new geological research vessel Hakurei Maru. The first cruise (GH 74-5) was carried out over an eastern part area of the Basin (6°-10°30'N, 164°30'-171°30'W), and the authors report here the preliminary results on the occurrence of manganese nodule deposits, paying particular consideration to their relationship to submarine topography and surficial and sub-bottom sedimentary facies. The surveyed area comprises a deep-sea basin at 5,000-5,400 m, defined to the north and east by the chain of seamounts and guyots of the Christmas Ridge. The deep-sea basin is divided roughly into 2 contrasting topographic features. The eastern part is characterised by flattened topography resulting from continuous deposition of turbidities; the meridian and western parts are characterised by gently rolling topography and the existence of a large number of deep-sea hills. Manganese nodules are almost lacking in the former flattened eastern area, whereas they are widely distributed in the latter rolling meridian and western parts. The population density of nodules varies from less than 1 Kg/m² to 26 kg/m² and the higher density is found in the siliceous-calcareous ooze zone of rather small, flat basins surrounded by deep-sea hills. The density is closely related to the thickness of the transparent layer obtained by 3.5 kHz PDR profiling over the whole area. Considering the various data of grab sampling, 3.5 kHz PDR profiling and to a lesser extent of deep-sea television and camera observations, the most promising manganese field in the present area seems to be confined to the north of the western sector of the area.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-24
Description: We analyzed the oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of planktonic and benthic foraminifers picked from 13 late Eocene to late Oligocene samples from DSDP Site 540 (23°49.73'N, 84°22.25'W, 2926 m water depth) from the Gulf of Mexico. An enrichment occurs in 18O of about 0.5 to 0.8 per mil in both benthic foraminifers and surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifers between the latest Eocene and early Oligocene. This early Oligocene maximum is followed by lower 18O values. A 1.2 per mil d13C decrease in both benthic and planktonic foraminiferal data occurs from the late Eocene to the late Oligocene. There is a correspondence of the 13C signal to deep-sea records; however, the amplitude of this change is greater than previously seen in deep-sea cores, possibly as a result of proximity to terrestrial sources of carbon. The covarying isotopic changes in both benthic and planktonic foraminifers suggest global causes, such as ice volume increases and increased terrestrial carbon input to the ocean. However, during the latter part of the record (early-late Oligocene), the increases in the benthic 18O without accompanying increases observed with planktonic foraminifers suggest that changes in only one part of the system occurred; one potential explanation being a decrease in bottom-water temperatures without concomitant changes in the surface waters. The 18O differences between species of planktonic foraminifers and the difference between planktonic and benthic 18O data indicate that diagenesis problems are minimal. These preliminary results are encouraging given that these cores are partially lithified.
