In: Thiede, J; Vallier, TL; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 62, 945-953, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.62.149.1981
    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: Igneous rocks were recovered from three sites on Hess Rise during Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 62: altered basalt at Site 464, at the northern end of Hess Rise; and altered trachyte from Site 465, and rounded basalt pebbles in upper Albian to middle Miocene sediments from Site 466, both at the southern end of Hess Rise. Major-, minor-, and trace-element data for basalt from Hole 464 are consistent with these rocks being transitional tholeiites that have undergone low-temperature alteration by reaction with sea water. Trachyte from Hole 465A exhibits as many as three generations of plagioclase along with potash feldspar that are flow aligned in groundmasses alterted to smectites and random mixed-layer clays. Textural evidence indicates that these rocks were eruped subaerially. Chemical data show a range of values when plotted on two- and three-component variation diagrams. The observed variations may result in part from differentiation, but they also reflect the high degree of alteration. Several oxides and elements show strong correlation with H2O+: K2O, SiO2, Rb and Lu decrease and MgO increases with increasing H2O+. These trends, except for that of Lu, are consistent with experimentally determined changes in chemistry that accompany alteration. The trend for Lu has not been previously reported; it may result from a more-intense alteration of the HREE-rich mafic minerals than of the LREE-rich feldspars. Despite their alteration, the trachytes compare favorably with alkalic differentiates from oceanic islands. We interpret Hess Rise as a volcanic platform formed by eruption of off-ridge volcanic rocks onto MORB oceanic crust during the Aptian and Albian stages, after the basement had migrated away from the spreading center. By analogy with present oceanic islands, we propose that early tholeiitic basalts were followed by alkalic basalts and their differentiation products (trachytes), producing a volcanic archipelago of islands and seamounts. Subsequent tectonism and subsidence led to the present state of Hess Rise.

(eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 61, 705-708, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.61.129.1981
    Publication Date: 2023-07-10
Description: Atomic-absorption spectrophotometry and instrumental neutron activation analysis were used to determine concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3, FeOt, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O, MnO, La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Lu, Sc, Co, Cr, Th, Hf, and Ta for 14 basalt samples from the lower portion of Hole 462A in the Nauru Basin. The basalts are similar to normal midocean ridge basalt (MORB) for the elements analyzed, and light rare-earth elements (LREE) are depleted relative to heavy rare-earth elements (HREE). Two samples are extensively altered to smectites and show significant reductions in Al2O3, CaO, MnO, Na2O, REE, Sc, Co, and Hf and gains in MgO and FeOt relative to unaltered samples. The increase in MgO and decrease in CaO indicate that alteration was caused by hydrothermal solutions.

In:  Supplement to: Vinogradov, Mikhail E; Shushkina, Elvira A; Kukina, Irina N (1976): Functional characteristics of a planktonic community in an equatorial upwelling region. Oceanology, 16, 67-76
    Publication Date: 2023-07-09
Description: An analysis was made of composition and content of nutrients, salts, particulate and dissolved organic matter, and various plankton groups in a series of samples collected by a 140-liter sampling bottle to depth up to 150 m at 4 equatorial stations between 97° and 154°W. Large and small phytoplankton, bacteria (aggregated and dispersed), heterotrophic flagellates, infusorians, radiolarians, foraminifers, fine filter-feeders, small and large, mostly herbivorous copepods, cyclopoids, predatory calanoids, and other predators were investigated separately. Trophic relations between these elements are established from personal and published data, and rate of their metabolism and some other physiological parameters are determined. Such functional characteristics as extent of satisfaction of food requirements of organisms belonging to various trophic groups, intensity of trophic relations, balance between production and consumption by individual elements of the community, ecological efficiency, and net and specific production of the groups distinguished, of individual trophic levels, of total zooplankton, and of the community as a whole are calculated. Variations of these characteristics along the equator with decreasing upwelling intensity are examined and their possible causes and mechanisms are discussed.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-20
Description: The lipids and kerogens of 15 sediment samples from Site 547 (ranging from Pleistocene to Early Jurassic/Triassic) and 4 from Site 545 (Cretaceous) have been analyzed. A strong terrestrial contribution of organic matter was found, and significant autochthonous inputs were also present, especially at Site 545. Both strongly reduced and highly oxidized sediments have been found in the Cenozoic and Jurassic samples of Site 547. On the contrary, all the Cretaceous sections of Sites 547 and 545 are anoxic. Sediments from anoxic paleoenvironments are immature and have a high content of sterenes, diasterenes, steradienes, hopenes, and ßß hopanes. Samples from oxic paleoenvironments are mainly mature and their content of hopenes and steriod structures is below the detection level. Nevertheless, their hopane distributions have the immature ßß homologs as the predominant molecular markers. For Site 545 the most abundant molecular markers are ring A monoaromatic steranes, and their presence is attributed to microbial and chemical transformations during early diagenesis.

In: Larson, RL; Schlanger, SO; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 61, 743-761, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.61.133.1981
    Publication Date: 2023-07-12
Description: At Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 462, from mudline to 447 meters below the sea floor, Cenozoic nannofossil oozes and chalks have acoustic anisotropies such that horizontal sonic velocities are 0 to 2.5% faster than those in the vertical direction. In laminated chalk, anisotropy of 5% is typical, and in limestones, radiolarian oozes, porcellanites, and cherts, the anisotropies range from 4 to 13%. Middle Maestrichtian volcaniclastics from 447 meters to 560 meters below the sea floor have an acoustic anisotropy of 2 to 32%; 4 to 13% is typical. Basalt flows and sills occur between 560 meters and 1068 meters, and have no apparent anisotropy, but minor interbedded volcaniclastics have anisotropies from 0 to 20% (5% is typical). These volcaniclastics frequently have very small anisotropies, however, compared with the volcaniclastic sequence above the basalt section. Data in cross-plots of the laboratory-measured compressional sound velocity versus wet-bulk density, wet-water content, and porosity of sediments and sedimentary rock typically lie between the equations derived by Wyllie et al. (1956) and Wood (1941); the Wyllie et al. (1956) equation has a fair fit with similar basalt velocity cross-plots. Crossplots of thermal conductivity and sound velocity indicate only a fair correlation. Cross-plots of thermal conductivity versus porosity, wet-water content, and wet-bulk density correlate well with equations derived by Maxwell (1904), Ratcliff (1960), Parasnis (1960), and Bullard and Day (1961). Electrical formation factor versus porosity for sediments and sedimentary rock agrees with the Archie (1942) equation, with m values of 2.6; for basalt, an m of about 2.1 is typical. Basalt pore-water resistivities do not appear to be greatly different from sea water. Formation factors are greater than those derived from equations in Maxwell (1904), Winsauer et al. (1952), Boyce (1968), and Kermabon et al. (1969). An "apparent interstitial water resistivity" (Rwa) curve was derived from the density and induction logs. This Rwa curve indicated an anomaly, at 393.5 to 396.5 meters, which could be interpreted as (1) 76% hydrocarbons, (2) relatively fresh pore water (1.8 per mil salinity), or (3) low-grain-density (2.2 g/cm**3) semi-lithified porcellanite-chert. Porcellanite-chert is the most plausible interpretation. In situ temperatures measured by the Uyeda temperature probe were about 2 to 5°C (50%) higher than the equilibrium temperature (Lachenbruch and Brewer, 1959) extrapolated from two Gearhart-Owen continuous temperature logs; this discrepancy probably arises because the hole was washed out in this depth interval, so these extrapolated temperatures are probably not reliable. If one ignores all precautions as to temperature artifacts, then the equilibrium temperatures of the Gearhart-Owen temperature logs suggest that hydrothermal circulation is occurring in at least the upper 40 meters of the basalt section and heat is transferred by convection and not conduction. Hydrothermal circulation is probably not indicated, however, and the temperature anomalies probably result from excessive artificial cooling of the fractured basalt zones by circulation of water during drilling.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-11
Description: Results of petrographic, chemical and X-ray studies of zeolites in sediments in the Transpacific lithological profile from the coast of Japan to the coast of Mexico are reported. For ocean phillipsites constancy of Si/Al ratio (2.44-2.87) and unstable cation composition in quantitative predominance of potassium over sodium are characteristic. Two groups of ocean phillipsites are distinguished: of deep-water basins and of submarine rises. The first spread over broad areas of the pelagic zone, and are formed by diagenetic transformation of fine dispersed pyroclastic material in minimum sedimentation rates, the latter occur locally - in areas of basaltic volcanism manifestations.

    Publication Date: 2023-07-11
Description: The stratigraphic position of the glacially transported 'Scholle' (large-size erratic block) at Schobüll near Husum (Schleswig-Holstein) is now considered to be Devonian rather than 'Rotliegendes'. The 'Scholle', consisting of red clay and dolomite, is overlain by red-colored till without any flint but with up to 90% carbonate clasts (containing 15% dolomite), which indicates an eastern Baltic origin. The relationship of the 'Scholle' with the glacial till also points to an eastern Baltic origin for it, with up to 1 000 km transport distance.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Constants of calcium, magnesium, zinc, cobalt, copper, and nickel exchange for sodium in iron-manganese nodules taken from different parts of the Pacific Ocean were determined under static conditions at constant ionic strength (?=0.05). These determinations revealed high capacity of nodules for sorbing the referred ions (their exchange constants range from 1.93 to 20.85). Obtained data demonstrate the major role of MnO and Fe2O3 in sorption processes in iron-manganese nodules.

Description: Ferromanganese nodules in the deep-sea and in freshwater lakes usually accrete layers rich in manganese oxides alternating with layers rich in iron oxides. The mechanism producing these alternating layers is unknown; indeed, the mechanism producing the nodules themselves is unknown. In Oneida Lake, New York, precipitants from the lake water and the surfaces of nodules at the sediment-water interface are enriched in Mn, whereas nodules buried in lake sediments have surface layers enriched in Fe. It is hypothesized here, using field and laboratory evidence, that reduction and mobilization of Mn from the nodule surface during periods of anoxic sediment cover produce the high Fe layers observed in the nodules.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Manganese nodules occurring within marine sediments of presumably Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene age from cores obtained by the Argentine oceanographic vessel ARA Islas Orcadas in 1977 on the Malvinas (Falkland) Plateau and neighbouring Scotia Sea were studied with the aim of comparing them with other fossil nodules found on the mainland of Argentina that were also ascribed to the marine environment. After optical mineralogical, chemical, X-ray and trace element analysis, the studied "nodules" proved to be actually wacke clasts cemented by manganese oxides with a high Fe/Mn ratio corresponding to a continental environment. The studied "nodules" thus differ from the Argentine mainland nodules and are supposed to have been transported from continental environments and then deposited in the marine realms. The wacke clasts became then nuclei for the deposition of the marine manganese oxides of the coatings. The proportion of trace elements, which is high, suggests the growth of the nodules in the marine environment.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: The major and some of the minor constituents and the rate of accumulation of manganese nodules in the western North Pacific were determined. Manganese concentration in the nodules ranged from 20 to 30 per cent in the acid soluble fraction. As to the rare earth concentration, enrichment of cerium was observed in the manganese nodule as compared with that in shales or sea water. Thorium to uranium ratio in the nodule ranged from 9.4 to 14.3, which was very much higher than that in sea water. From the distribution of excess ionium, excess protactinium and Io/Th ratio, a rate of accumulation of 7 mm per million years was obtained with the surface layer of several mm in thickness of the JEDS-4-E4 nodule.

    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Manganese oxide crusts similar to those reported from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rift valley by Scott et al., 1974 (https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.848726) were dredged at two sites near the Galapagos spreading axis on ocean floor estimated from magnetic anomalies to be 2.4 and 0.3 m.y. old. Compared to the typical ocean-floor manganese deposits attributed to precipitation from seawater, the 2-6 cm thick manganese crusts reported here exhibit very low Fe/Mn and low 232Th/238U ratios, as well as lower transition metal and higher manganese concentrations. The manganese crusts were deposited several orders of magnitude faster than the more common hydrogenous nodules; this fact together with other geochemical characteristics and the geophysical environment suggests the manganese deposits reported here are of hydrothermal origin.

Description: The cores described in this report were taken on AMPHITRITE Expedition in Decenber 1963 - February 1964 by Scripps Institution of Oceanography from, the R/V Argo. A total of 148 cores were recovered and are available at Scripps for sampling and study. The coring sites, all in the tropical central Pacific. The AMPHITRITE cores are here briefly described to identify visually distinct units based on lithology, color, texture, or other characteristic unique to an interval of sediment. For determination of lithology, the slides prepared from samples of the cores were examined microscopically in conjuction with the visual examination.

Description: In 1970 a large deposit of ferromanganese nodules was discovered on the floor of the Indian Ocean southwest of Cape Leeuwin by the research vessel USNS Eltanin. This discovery, which was based largely on bottom photographs from about 20 stations, was discussed by Frakes (1975) and Kennett and Watkins (1975, 1976). The photographs suggest that the deposit spreads, nearly continuously, over 900 000km^2, and cores showed that the nodules are essentially confined to the sediment surface. Kennett and Watkins (op. cit.) pointed to the abundance of ripple and scour marks and current-formed lineations on the present surface, and of extensive disconformities in the cores, as evidence of strong present and past bottom currents in the region. They suggested that the current action had resulted in very low sedimentation rates, which had allowed the nodule field, named by them (1976) the 'Southeast Indian Ocean Manganese Pavement', to develop. In early 1976 the authors used the research vessel HMAS Diamantina for a 10-day cruise in the region to sample the nodules in order to study their chemistry and mineralogy. During the cruise 9 stations were occupied, 8 of them successfully (Figure 1), and about 2000 nodules were recovered from the sea bed. The apparatus used was a light box dredge on the ships hydrowire, which had a breaking strain of about one tonne. Although an attempt was made to reoccupy Eltanin photographic stations, it should be noted that positioning was by celestial navigation, so errors of up to 10 km are possible.

Description: The major and minor element compositions of a suite of abyssal sea-floor ferromanganese nodules and associated sediments from the eastern central Pacific have been used to examine inter-element relationships and the mineralogy of the nodules, the relationship between the composition of nodules, and their associated sediments and regional variations in composition with respect to likely modes for formation of such deposits. Apart from Mn and Fe, significant proportions of the total Ti, Ca, Mg, K, Ba, Sr, Th and Y and almost all the P, As, Ce, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Zn and Zr are present in the oxide fractions of the nodules. The Mg, Ba, Cu, Mo, Ni and Zn contents are significantly correlated with the total Fe content. Nodules from the northeastern tropical Pacific have Mn/Fe ratios highter than those in the oxide fractions of their associated sediments, todorokite as the principal Mn phase and relatively high concns of minor elements associated with Mn. Nodules from the south central Pacific have Mn/Fe ratios similar to those in the oxide fractions of the associated sediments, {delta}-MnO Sub(2) as the only Mn-phase, and relatively high concns of minor elements associated with Fe. There appears to be a smooth gradation in composition in the tropical Pacific between these 2 end members. The retional compositional variation is interpreted as a reflection of different sources of metals for, and different growth mechanisms of, sea-floor nodules. The oxide precipitate from sea water consists of {delta}-MnO Sub(2), has a relatively low Mn/Fe ratio and minor element contents related to the total Fe and Mn({delta}-MnO Sub(2)) content. The oxide precipitate forming in areas of very low sedimentation as a result of diagenetic remobilisation in the surface sediment consists of todorokite, and has a high Mn/Fe ratio and enhanced metal content in the Mn-(todorokite) phase. Available information on the morphology and compositional variation of individual nodules from the tropical Pacific corroborates these contrasting metal sources and suggests that they can be resolved on the scale of an individual oxide concretion.

Description: Considerable regional variations in the chemical composition of manganese nodules from a wide range of the Pacific Ocean have been observed. These variations can be more exactly expressed in terms of inter-element relationships. In particular, Cu-Mn and Cu-Ni associations reveal that Cu content in pelagic nodules increases rapidly in proportion to those of Mn or Ni. In nodules from continental borderland and hemipelagic areas, even if Mn or Ni contents increase, that of Cu increases only slightly. It is suggested that the considerable chemical differences within individual nodules and between nodules from the same site, at a limited pelagic area where there is no marked change in depositional conditions of nodules, are due to the role of hydrolyzable trace elements in the formation of nodules.

Description: Bulk composition of ferromanganese nodules from the pelagic environment of the Pacific Ocean is apparently related to nodule-growth rate, sediment-accumulation rate, and biologic productivity in the overlying seawater. Nodules with a high Mn/Fe ratio and high Ni and Cu concns tend to occur in areas where primary productivity in the surface layer of the ocean is high and the sediment accumulation rate low. They may have a Mn/Fe ratio as low as one and accrete at rates as low as 1 mm/10 M yrs. Nodules with a larger Mn/Fe ratio apparently have growth rates that are greater by as much as a factor of 10.

Description: Morphological, mineralogical and chemical analysis are reported for a metalliferous encrustation from a seamount in the Gulf of Guinea, South Atlantic. The results are compared with published data on encrustation from similar environments. The morphology and mineralogy indicate a crust formed on the exposed rock surface with some agglutination of foram debris. Comparison of the abundance patterns for transition elements with that of known data suggests that some enrichment had resulted from the high primary productivity at this site.

Description: The minor-element composition of concentric layers within a single ferromanganese nodule from the eastern North Pacific exhibits strong correlations with Fe and Mn contents but appears to be independent of pronounced mineralogic variations. On the basis of these correlations, the elemental composition of individual layers apparently is controlled by the relative contribution of two sources: seawater, and interstitial water of associated sediment. In contrast, the mineralogy of the nodule, consisting of birnessite in the outer few layers and todorokite in the inner layers, is considered to be a function of nodule diagenesis.

Description: This chapter discusses the formation and distribution of some metals in ocean-floor manganese nodules in the light of the observed data in the literature and thermodynamic and kinetic considerations of the oxidation of metal ions in the oceanic environment. There are, in general, two major schools of thought on the mechanism of incorporation of the minor elements such as nickel, copper, and cobalt with the major elements such as manganese and iron. One is the lattice substitution mechanism and the other the adsorption mechanism. If the mechanism is lattice substitution, extraction of the metal ions is not possible unless the lattice of the major elements is first broken and exchanged with other ions from the bulk solution. Consequently, the leaching behavior of minor elements should display a very close relationship with that of major elements.

Description: Compositional data for coexisting manganese nodules, micronodules, sediments and pore waters from five areas in the equatorial and S.W. Pacific have been obtained. This represents the largest study of its type ever undertaken to establish the distribution of elements between the various phases within the sediment column. The composition of manganese nodules, micronodules and sediments (on a carbonate-free basis) shows marked differences between the equatorial high productivity zone and the low productivity region of the S.W. Pacific. In the case of the nodules, th is reflects an increased supply of transition elements (notably Ni, Cu and Zn) to the nodules as a result of the in situ dissolution of siliceous tests within the sediment column in the equatorial Pacific high productivity zone. Micronodules display similar, but somewhat different, compositions to those of the associated nodules in each area. Micronodule composition is therefore influenced by the same basic factors that control nodule composition, but is modified by dissolution of the micronodules in situ within the sediment column. Locally, as in the area immediately south of the Marquesas Fracture Zone, the micronodule population is contaminated by small, angular volcanic rock fragments; this leads to apparently anomalous micronodule compositions. Micronodules appear to be a transient feature in the sediment column, especially in the equatorial Pacific. Dissolution of micronodules in the sediment column therefore represents an important source of elements for the growth of manganese nodules in the equatorial Pacific. Sediment composition is markedly influenced by the carbonate content. On a carbonate-free basis, the sediments from the equatorial high productivity zone are quite distinct in composition from those in the S.W. Pacific. This reflects differences in the lithology of the sediments. In the Aitutaki Passage, the local influence of volcanoclastic material in sediment composition has been established. The major cations and anions in pore waters measured here show no major differences between equatorial and S.W. Pacific sediments. Silica is, however, higher in equatorial Pacific pore waters reflecting the dissolution of siliceous tests in these sediments.

Description: During U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public hearings held in 1973, 1974 and 1975 prior to Texas Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) oil and gas lease sales, concern was expressed by the National Marine Fisheries Service, scientists from Texas A&M and the University of Texas and private citizens over the possible environmental impact of oil and gas drilling and production operations on coral reefs and fishing banks in or adjacent to lease blocks to be sold. As a result, certain restrictive regulations concerning drilling operations in the vicinity of the well documented coral reefs and biostromal communities at the East and West Flower Gardens were established by BLM, and Signal Oil Company was required to provide a biological and geological baseline study of the less well known Stetson Bank before a drilling permit could be issued. Considering the almost total lack of knowledge of the geology and biotic communities associated with the South Texas OCS banks lying in or near lease blocks to be offered for sale in 1975, BLM contracted with Texas A&M University to provide the biological and geological baseline information required to facilitate judgments as to the extent and nature of restrictive regulations on drilling near these banks which might be required to insure their protection. In pursuit of this, scientists from Texas A&M University were to direct their attention toward assessments of ground fish populations, unique biological and geological features, substratum type and distribution, and the biotic and geologic relationships between these banks and those farther north.

Description: Manganese nodules, micronodules, and crusts were encountered in surface sediments, and at depth, in 6 of the 10 sites drilled during DSDP Leg 29 south of New Zealand and Tasmania. Major concentrations of surface nodule pavements occur on and adjacent to the Campbell Plateau south of New Zealand, south of the Tasman Rise, and in the South Tasman Sea. These deposits are found on top of erosional unconformities, which span tens of millions of years and reflect scouring by strong bottom currents. Micronodules were also found at depth throughout most of these cores. Their occurrence apparently is dependent upon a number of environmental factors.

Description: The major purpose of Leg 31 was the scrutiny of tectonic, sedimentologic, volcanic, paleontologic, and paleooceanographic processes operative in arc-marginal basin complexes along with a deciphering of basin history. The 12 sites ultimately occupied during Leg 31 all yielded significant new data bearing on the nature and evolution of the West Philippine Basin, Shikoku Basin, and Sea of Japan. The major objective at sites 290 through 292 was to test the mode and age of origin of the West Philippine Sea with emphasis on the nature of the Central Basin Fault. Sites 294/295 were drilled far to the east of the Central Basin Fault zone in the thin sediment blanket covering deeper portions of the northeastern West Philippine Basin. The other sites were situated in the Sea of Japan.

Description: The northwestern Pacific Ocean is the largest expanse of old oceanic lithosphere, and so the principal theme of Leg 32 set by the Pacific Advisory Panel was the late Mesozoic history of the Pacific Ocean. The main scientific goals originally set for the leg were to: 1) Determine the development of the very deep sea floor of the western Pacific, including the nature of its basement rocks and the age, lithology, and fossil content of the sedimentary rocks overlying acoustic basement. 2) Establish standard mid-Mesozoic to Recent paleontological-biostratigraphic reference sections for the (present-day) northwest Pacific. 3) Determine the paleolatitude for a specific period of volcanicity on Koko Guyot of the Emperor Seamount Chain.

Description: The Manihiki Plateau is an elevated area of shallow oceanic crust in the South Pacific; it was formed during Early Cretaceous time by profuse outpourings of basalt. DSDP Holes 317, 317A, and 317B, on which this account is based, are situated in a basinal area on the so called High Plateau, the shallowest part of the volcanic edifice, where depths range between 2000 and 3000 meters. The oldest sediments cored are Lower Cretaceous greenish-black volcaniclastics traversed by reddish-purple clay seams; these deposits commonly show evidence of redeposition, but the only possible shallow-water remains found are very rare bryozoan and echinoderm fragments.

Description: Dredging in the Danger Island Troughs, which divide the High and Western parts of the Manihiki Plateau, recovered several fresh pebbles of olivine tholeiite and tholeiite, a single pebble of highly altered gabbroic cumulate, and several dozen pebbles of altered variolitic basalt. Troughs suggests that at one time the troughs were the site of active faulting. A tectonic model for the evolution of the plateau, consistent with a fracture zone origin for the Danger Island Troughs, requires the formation of the Manihiki Plateau at a triple junction of the Pacific, Farallon, and Antarctic plates.

Description: This DSDP leg was originally conceived by the Antarctic Advisory Panel in order to investigate the geologic histories of the Scotia Arc and of the Argentine Basin. Site 326 (Drake Passage) was drilled in 3812 meters of water about 150 km southeast of Cape Horn. The main objective was to check the magnetic-reversal dating of the opening of Drake Passage by determining basement age. Site 327 is in 2400 meters of water on the western nose of the elevated eastern part of the Falkland Plateau, the Maurice Ewing Bank and was chosen to examine Southern Ocean shallow-water pre-Neogene biostratigraphy. Site 328, in 5103 meters of water in the Malvinas Outer Basin immediately to the east of the Falkland Plateau and to the south of the Falkland Fracture Zone, was chosen to examine correlatives of Argentine Basin acoustic reflectors, to obtain a deep-water southerly biostratigraphic section, and if possible, to date the underlying oceanic basement. Site 330, in 2626 meters of water at the western end of the elongate rise forming the eastern end of the Falkland Plateau, the Maurice Ewing Bank, was selected to elucidate the pre-Aptian history of the Falkland Plateau and to obtain a biostratigraphic section older than that cored at Sites 327 and 329.

Description: The Bauer Deep is the depression between the active East Pacific Rise on the west and the extinct Galapagos Rise on the east. The selection of Site 319 was based on a detailed survey of the Bauer Basin during Yaloc-13, Leg 3. Leg 3. It is in a basin about 8 km wide (east-west) at 13°OO.8'S, which is part of a broadly faulted zone on the low western flank of the Galapagos Rise. Site 320 and 321 where located in order to survey the Nazca plate. The objectives for Site 320 were (1) to core basalt continuously as deep as possible, with one and possibly two re-entries; (2) to determine the history of the eastern Nazca plate for the last 30 to 40 m.y., (3) to determine the effectiveness of the Peru-Chile Trench as a barrier to turbidity current dispersal. Site 321 is located on the eastern edge of the Nazca plate immediately south of the Mendafia Fracture Zone. The objectives for Site 321 were similar as those for Site 320.

Description: Because of its position between the North Atlantic and the Arctic oceans, its young age, small size, and diversity of geological structures, the Norwegian-Greenland Sea provided a unique target for deep drilling on Leg 38 of the Glomar Challenger. From studies of the sediments and basement rocks it was expected to gain insight particularly as to the following: 1) The tectonic framework and evolution of this area with special emphasis on the continental margins and on questions concerned with shifts of spreading axis and existence of foundered continental areas. 2) The youngest times of existence of land bridges between Eurasia and North America and the effect these land bridges had on water circulation and paleoclimates. 3) The date of the initiation of glaciation and dates of glacial advances and retreats. 4) Description of the Tertiary marine microfauna and microflora of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, which are essentially unknown at present, and investigation of their similarity with microfauna and microflora from other areas.

The Mesozoic sequence at basin Sites 535 and 540 consists largely of laminated limestone with smaller amounts of skeletal limestone and pure pelagic limestone, whereas the Mesozoic sediments at basement Sites 536, 537, and 538 (Hole 538A) consist largely of oolitic-oncolitic limestone.

Description: Initial data on the hydrogen-isotopic compositions in hydrous Mn minerals from various occurrences fall in a wide range from -298 to -84 per mil, relative to SMOW. DeltaD-values of todorokite and cryptomelane from Tertiary deposits show -89 and -150 per mil. 10 Angström-manganite and Delta-MnO2 from deep-sea nodules have relatively restricted DeltaD-values ranging from -96 to -84 per mil. The DeltaD-values for manganese bog ores from recent hot springs show almost -105 per mil. It is recognized that the isotopic values obtained for the deep-sea nodules and recent bog ores are slightly different ranged. Manganite and groutite are unique in their hydrogen-isotopic compositions, having the most depleted DeltaD-values ranging from -298 to -236 per mil. MnO(OH) minerals are more deuterium-depleted hydrous minerals than any other hydrothermal minerals from various ore deposits. Hydrogen-isotope fractionation factors between manganite and water were experimentally determined to be 0.7894, 0.7958 and 0.8078 at 150°, 200° and 250°C, respectively. the present experimental results indicate that if manganites were formed at temperatures below 250°C, under isotopic equilibrium conditions, most of the manganite mineralization in the Tertiary manganese deposits must have precipitated from meteoric hydrothermal solutions.

Description: This report is Volume 1 in the series of reports entitled "Descriptions of W.H.O.I. rock dredge samples". This series represents a major effort to catalog and prepare initial descriptions for all rock dredge samples in the W.H.O.I. Sea Floor Samples Collection, and to distribute this information throughout the scientific community. Volume 1 contains sample descriptions from approximately 382 dredging stations executed during the period 1960 through 1977. It also represents a digitized listing of all dredge station data for the entire W.H.O.I. Dredge Collection through 1980. This data is sorted by Marsden Square and can serve as a regional index for all rock descriptions included in Volumes 1-3.
