Description: Calving of iceberg at ice shelves and floating glacier tongues is a poorly understood process, hence a physically motivated calving law is not yet existing. The demands on developing appropriate models for calving is large, as calving rates are needed for large scale ice sheet models that simulate the evolution of ice sheets. Here, we present a new approach for simulating fracture in ice. Our model is based on a finite strain theory for a viscoelastic Maxwell material, as the large simulation time leads to high strains. The fracturing process is simulated using a fracture phase field model that takes into account the elastic strain energy. We conduct simulations for a typical calving front geometry, with ice rises governing the formation of cracks. To represent the stress state adequately, we first conduct a spin-up to allow the viscous contribution to develop before the fracture phase field is computed. The analysis comprises the assessment of the crack path in comparison to observations, the influence of the spin-up, as well as elastic versus viscous strain contributions based on Hencky strain. Additionally, an estimate of released energy based on high resolution optical imagery of a Greenlandic calving front is presented.

Description: The ability to use data produced by different sources (social networks, governments, weather sensors etc.) is widely recognized as a key to capitalize the value of data. In the scientific field, such usage may incredibly boost the innovation and foster new discoveries. However, one of the main hurdles is currently represented by the difficulties in achieving the required interoperability to provide integrated access to multi-disciplinary data. The current work presents a metadata-driven approach that uses in a combined way metadata, semantics, and services as key components for providing integrated access to heterogeneous data sources. The integration occurs within a central data integration system, which is driven by a rich metadata catalogue and that can present the data provided by the different data sources in a harmonised way to the end user, by means of RESTful APIs. A real application demonstrating metadata-driven semantic and service interoperability for achieving homogeneous access to multi-disciplinary heterogeneous data sources is illustrated in the case of EPOS, a Research Infrastructure for Solid Earth Science. The advantages in terms of ease of maintenance, of flexibility in plugging different standard without perturbating communities’ long-lasting technical practices, and of ability to track provenance are discussed. Future work for providing open-source implementation of a system built following the proposed approach is also envisaged.

Description: The Shapes Constraint Language (SHACL) has been recently introduced as a W3C recommendation to define constraints for validating RDF graphs. In this paper a novel SHACL-driven multi-view editor is presented: SHAPEness. It empowers users by offering them a rich interface for assessing and improving the quality of metadata represented as RDF graphs. SHAPEness has been developed and tested in the framework of the European Plate Observing System (EPOS). In this context, the SHAPEness features have proven to be a valuable solution to easily create and maintain valid graphs according to the EPOS data model. The SHACL-driven approach underpinning SHAPEness, makes this tool suitable for a broad range of domains, or use cases, which structure their knowledge by means of SHACL constraints.

Description: We have provided the first estimate of scat- tering and intrinsic attenuation for the Gargano Prom- ontory (Southern Italy) analyzing 190 local earthquakes with M L ranging from 1.0 to 2.8. To separate the intrin- sic Q i and scattering Q s quality factors with the Wen- nerberg approach (1993), we have measured the direct S waves and coda quality factors ( Q 𝛽 , Q c ) in the same volume of crust. Q 𝛽 parameter is derived with the coda normalization method (Aki 1980) and Q c factor is derived with the coda envelope decay method (Sato 1977). We selected the coda envelope by performing an automatic picking procedure from T start = 1.5T S up to 30 s after origin time (lapse time T L ). All the obtained quality factors clearly increase with frequency. The Q c values correspond to those recently obtained for the area. The estimated Q i are comparable to the Q c at all frequencies and range between 100 and 1000. The Q s parameter shows higher values than Q i , except for 8 Hz, where the two estimates are closer. This implies a pre- dominance of intrinsic attenuation over the scattering attenuation. Furthermore, the similarity between Q i and Q c allows us to interpret the high Q c anomaly previ- ously found in the northern Gargano Promontory up to a depth of 24 km, as a volume of crust characterized by very low seismic dumping produced by conversion of seismic energy into heat. Moreover, most of the earth- quake foci fall in high Q i areas, indicating lower level of anelastic dumping and a brittle behavior of rocks.

Description: Groundwater is a vital resource for humans, non-human species, and ecosystems. It has allowed the development of human evolution and civilizations throughout history (e.g., Wittfogel 1956, Tempelhoff et al. 2009, Cuthbert and Ashley 2014, Roberts 2014). However, it faces multiple potential threats that make it vulnerable and fragile. Climate change and human activities are the primary causes that have led to water cycle disruptions, particularly a decline in groundwater quality and quantity (e.g., Gleeson et al. 2020, Chaminé et al. 2022, Richardson et al. 2023). Climate variability has induced droughts, floods, and other extreme weather conditions, significantly impacting groundwater in many regions. Meanwhile, human activities such as over-abstraction, ground contamination, deforestation, land-use change, and other anthropogenic pressures have further compromised groundwater status. Nonetheless, groundwater continues to fulfill water demands in many regions or during specific periods. Therefore, concerted efforts are imperative to ensure its sustainability. So, conservation practices and nature-based solutions must be adopted to efficiently manage groundwater and shield it from additional potential hazards or risks (e.g., contamination, pollution, or over-abstraction). Failure to act quickly can result in the loss of this critical resource, with severe consequences for the economy, society, and ecosystems. From this perspective, it is imperative to prioritize actions underscored by technical-scientific integrity, environmental responsibility, societal sensitivity, and ethical practices.

Description: This review summarizes what the volcanology community has learned thus far from studying the deposits of pyroclastic currents (PCs) from the 1980 eruption sequence at Mount St. Helens. The review includes mass flow events during the May 18 eruption, including the lateral blast, the afternoon column collapse and boil-over PC activity, and some aspects of the debris avalanche. We also include a summary of PCs generated in the smaller eruptions following the climactic May 18 event. Our objective is to summarize the state of our understanding of PC transport and emplacement mechanisms from the combination of field and laboratory observations, granular flow experiments, and numerical modeling techniques. Specifically, we couple deposit characteristics, experiments, and numerical modeling techniques to critically address the problems of (1) constraining conditions in the flow boundary zone at the time of deposition; (2) the influence of substrate roughness and topography on PC behavior; (3) the prevalence, causes, and consequences of substrate erosion by PCs; and (4) the reconstruction of PC transportation and sedimentation processes from a combination of geophysical and sedimentological observations. We conclude by providing opportunities for future research as our field, experimental, and numerical research techniques advance.

Description: When a lava flow enters a body of water, either a lake, sea, river or ocean, explosive interaction may arise. However, when it is an 'a'ā lava flow entering water, a more complex interaction occurs, that is very poorly described and documented in literature. In this paper, we analysed the 2–4 ka San Bartolo lava flow field emplaced on the north flank of Stromboli volcano, Italy. The lava flow field extends from ~ 650 m a.s.l. where the eruptive fissure is located, with two lava channels being apparent on the steep down to the coast. Along the coast the lava flow field expands to form a lava delta ~ 1 km wide characterised by 16 lava ‘Flow’ units. We performed a field survey to characterise the features of lava entering the sea and the associated formation of different components and magnetic measurements to infer the flow fabrics and emplacement process of the lava flow system. We measured the density, porosity and connectivity of several specimens to analyse the effect of lava-water interaction on the content in vesicles and their connectivity and conducted a macroscopic componentry analysis (clast count) at selected sites to infer the character of the eroded offshore segment of the lava flow field and its component flow units. The collected data allowed us to define the main components of a lava delta fed by 'a'ā lava flows, with its channels, littoral units, ramps, lava tubes, and inflated pāhoehoe flows controlled by the arterial 'a'ā flow fronts. The spatial organisation of these components allowed us to build a three-step descriptive model for 'a'ā entering a water. The initial stage corresponds to the entry of channel-fed 'a'ā lava flow into the sea which fragments to form metric blocks of 'a'ā lava. Continued lava supply to the foreshore causes flow units to stall while spreading over this substrate. Subsequent 'a'ā lava flow units ramp up behind the stalled flow front barrier. Lava tubes extending through the stalled flow barrier feed the seaward extension of a bench made of several pāhoehoe flow units.

Description: Invasive alien species represent one of the main environmental threats to native biodiversity and can also strongly alter the biogeochemical cycles within an ecosystem. This study aims to define the distribution of the invasive alien species Cotula cor-onopifolia L. within the protected wetland "Variconi" (Campania region, southern Italy) and evaluate the potential role of water geochemical features as interpretation tools for pattern distribution. The presence of C. coronopifolia was assessed in the field, and a distribution map was drawn; concomitantly thirty-nine water samples were collected from groundwater and surface water bodies for chemical analyses. The results showed that C. coronopifolia preferentially colonized the sector of the wetland characterized by high halinity, while it is totally absent in retrodunal and sandy coastal area with very high halinity. The cartography presented can be used as a tool to help target future management interventions. Through our multidisciplinary approach, new evidence has been provided on the ecology of this invasive alien plant that occupies several wetlands worldwide. The replicability of this method may be useful to assess the level of invasion of an alien species but also to predict its evolution as a function of environmental parameters.

Description: Active volcanoes show many mild thermal anomalies, because the ground surface is sensible to changes in the advective processes, occurring through the network of fissures. This data report shows the temperatures, recorded from January 2020 to February 2023, by a remote-controlled monitoring station. The VCS station is located on the summit of La Fossa cone (Vulcano, Aeolian Islands), in a zone of intense diffuse degassing. The temperature data, hourly registered at VCS, are available in the supplementary Excel file. The thermal data are part of the comprehensive network, performed by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, for volcanic surveillance. On the Island of Vulcano, the active volcanic system under la Fossa caldera has been affected by multiple exhaling crises, interpreted as unrest of volcanic activity. The temperature time series provided reference data showing the thermal transition of the volcanic ground surface from a background degassing condition, through unrest, to the new thermal condition that followed the unrest period.

Description: The ability to predict the mobility of rock avalanches is necessary when designing strategies to mitigate the risks they pose. A popular mobility indicator of the flow front is the Heim’s apparent friction coefficient muH. In the field, muH shows a decrease in value as flow volume V increases. But this correlation has been a mystery as to whether it is due to a causal relationship between V and mobility since: (1) field data of muH do not collapse onto a single curve because typically widely scattered and (2) laboratory experiments have shown an opposite volume effect on the center of mass mobility of miniature flows. My numerical simulations confirm for the first time the existence of a functional relationship of scaling parameters where muH decreases as V increases in unsteady and nonuniform 3D flows. Data scatter is caused by muH that is affected by numerous other variables besides V. The interplay of these variables produces different granular regimes with opposite volume effects. In particular, muH decreases as V increases in the regime characterized by a relatively rough subsurface. The relationship holds for large-scale flows that, like rock avalanches, consist of a very large number of fine clasts traveling in wide channels. In these dense flows, flow front mobility increases as flow volume increases, as channel width increases, as grain size decreases, as basal friction decreases and as flow scale increases. Larger-scale flows are more mobile because they have larger Froude number values.

Notes: Abstract The paper demonstrates that it is possible to construct memory models where the information inserted is stored in disseminated form, using sequential coding, the changes in the units forming the models being determined by their geometrical connections and by the incoming stream of information. The models are shown to have large storage capacity and their efficiency can be made insensitive to loss of or damage to a large fraction of their units. The satisfactory verification by computer simulation of the analysis and results described in the present paper will be the subject of a future paper.

Notes: Abstract An analysis of countercurrent exchange in a U-tube is presented for a single-solute, constant-volume flow rate system with spatially varying source fluxes and permeabilities. Analytical solutions are given for the steady-state equations and numerical solutions for the unsteady-state equations. The solutions indicate that an external source of solute delivered to the stream flowing away from the U-tube bend can be distributed by the exchanger so that the concentration in both limbs increases toward the bend. In particular, there exist source fluxes whose magnitude decreases monotonically toward the bend for which the maximum solute concentration occurs at the bend. The point at which a concentration maximum occurs is governed principally by the solute permeability of the barrier separating the two limbs and by the volume flow rate through the exchanger. The system dynamics depend strongly on the relative cross-sectional areas of the two limbs or, equivalently, on the flow velocities within them. The model is used as a basis for discussion of various functional aspects of the renal vasa recta system.

Notes: Abstract The circulatory mixing process was analyzed as the time course of the dispersion of indicator after its injection into the heart. In simplified models, which had one or two lumped mixing chambers and circulatory pathways connected with them, it was suggested that the extent of dispersion could be evaluated by the variance of indicator distribution in the total circulating blood when the circulation time distributions between the chambers and the concentration curves in the chambers were known. The method of determining the circulation time distributions through the pulmonary, systemic and total circulations was derived and the actual distributions were obtained in dogs by indicator dilution techniques. With the use of these distributions, the time course of the circulatory mixing process was numerically calculated. The results showed that there was considerable difference in velocities of the process between the case of the right heart injection and the left heart injection of the indicator.

Notes: Abstract An investigation is made as to whether or not the existence of a band-pass filter function, analogous to that in electronics, can be proved from the fundamental laws of chemical kinetics. The problem is important for better understanding of the preference of certain biological rhythms to others. It is shown with simple examples that such behavior is possible for a number of systems of coupled chemical reactions far enough from the thermodynamic equilibrium. It is of interest to generalize this behavior since it could conceivably play a role in the transmission of “usable information” in biology.

Notes: Abstract The phenomenon of mental creativity is considered from the standpoint of the theory of organismic sets, developed by the author in a series of previous publications. It is shown how the differences in creativity between different individuals may be interpreted on this basis, and why extreme creativity is rare. A parallel interpretation for facility in observation is given, and it is shown why facility in creativity and observation is much rarer than either individual facility. A further conclusion is drawn regarding the deducibility of the laws of nature by purely logical means.

Notes: Abstract The equation for the quantum transitions (spontaneous and stimulated) of membrane dipoles is solved for the various forms of time-varying stimulation in nerve. From the condition of ever-increasing dipole population in the upper state, the threshold for excitation is determined in each case. The results obtained are in agreement with the established facts. The optimum frequency for stimulation is given asv 0=0.0615/T 2 whereT 2 is the dipole relaxation time. The feature of the theory is that the mathematical formulation is based upon a physical mechanism and the results can thus provide some understanding in the observed phenomena.

Notes: Abstract Evaluation of the Van der Waals energy per filament suggests that molecular dispersion forces should not be very important in determining the stability of the myofilament lattice in resting muscle. In order to explain the lattice stability and other important properties of the striated muscle, it is suggested that a balance between electrostatic forces and forces developed by some interfibrillar structures is mainly responsible.

Part I of the paper deals with the analysis of ann compartment (organ) vascular system model. The data, employed in the analysis, consists of continuous monitoring of the amounts of indicatorM i in the organs (or compartments). An analysis for determination of the cardiac output and the absolute flows to the organs is presented. Since it is difficult to isolate certain organ systems and measure the amounts of indicator in them exclusively, a more realistic model of then compartment vascular system is presented in Part II. Herein, the analysis has accounted for the finite transit time, of the indicator, from one organ system to another. Further, estimation theory is employed to make estimates of blood flow to different organs by taking note of (i) the measurement errors due to the detectors' monitoring (for an organ system) some combination ofM i 's instead of theM i for the particulari th organ and (ii) noise uncertainties introduced by the measuring instruments.

Notes: Abstract Analytic expressions for the velocity profile and particle distribution of a dilute suspension in flow were obtained as functions of radial distance. Einstein's linear viscosity model and the hypothesis of “minimum energy dissipation” were used. The methods of variational calculus were applied during the mathematical development. A parabolic velocity profile, which is a modified form of that for Hagen-Poiseuille flow, and a uniform particle distribution were obtained. An attempt is made to explain the results in light of some of the widely held theories on suspension flow and the rather severe limitations of Einstein's viscosity model. A suggestion for future work is made for improving the results of the present.

Notes: Abstract A possible mechanism for microwave-neuron interaction, when the nerve is irradiated by a thermally insignificant electromagnetic field, is described. The radiation field is treated classically, but the atomic system which interacts with this field is treated quantum mechanically using the density matrix approach. Attention is given to both homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening effects, and the degrading influence of inhomogeneous broadening upon the neural membrane's ability to interact with the electromagnetic field is shown.

Notes: Abstract Mathematical models of neurons are studied which exhibit spontaneous and repetitive firings in the absence of normally occurring substances. The activity of such neurons could result in the symptoms of epilepsy. The identification of such substances would be important in the treatment of the disease as well as in the understanding of their mode of action. The importance of the geometrical and physical parameters for the generation of spontaneous repetitive discharges is brought out.

Notes: Abstract A period of morphogenesis is operationally defined as a system. This period precedes cell differentiation and is axially expressed. Six interacting elements of structure are defined utilizing Spemann and Mangold's heteroplastic transplantation experiments. The system generates thirty-six interactions, given a rule of composition and specific premises. The element set and operation is matched to the symmetric group S3.

Notes: Abstract The effects of a periodic contact rate and of carriers are considered for a generalization of Bailey's simple epidemic model. In this model it is assumed that individuals become susceptible again as soon as they recover from the infection so that a fixed population can be divided into a class of infectives and a class of susceptibles which vary with time. If the contact rate is periodic, then the number of infectives as time approaches infinity either tends to zero or is asymptotically periodic depending on whether the total population size is less than or greater than a threshold value. The behavior for large time of the number of infectives is determined for three modifications of the model which involve carriers.

Notes: Abstract This paper develops quantitatively for the kinetics of mitochondrial oxidation the implications of the hypothesis that phosphorylation is accomplished by phonons in the mitochondrial solid. The concept is used that the phonon acts like a trapped photon to produce a reverse photocurrent, which inhibits oxidation, in the absence of phonon dissipation due to phosphorylation or uncoupling. The same conceft in reverse is shown to explain qualitatively the generation or membrane potentials in nerve axon. Infrared optical phonons generated in the above processes are expected to have limited mibility, but it is shown that the structure and geometry of the lipid bilayer membrane are well adapted to the rapid and efficient dissemination of this energy throughout the mitochondrion or nerve axoni n the form of infrared electromagnetic waves by a coaxial transmission line mechanism. The mitochondrion may act like an infrared coaxial resonant cavity.

Notes: Abstract LetL be a Leslie population matrix. Leslie (1945) and others have shown that the matrixL has a leading positive eigenvalueλ 0 and that in general: (1) $$\mathop {\lim }\limits_{t \to \infty } \frac{{L^t X}}{{\lambda _0^t }} = \gamma X_{\lambda _0 } $$ whereX λ 0 is an eigenvector corresponding toλ 0,X is any initial population vector, and γ is a scalar quantity detormined byX. In this article we generalize (1) exhaustively by removing the mild restrictions on the fertility rates which most writers impose. The result is an oscillatory limit of a kind first noted by Bernardelli (1941) and Lewis (1942) and described by Bernardelli as “population waves”. We calculate in terms ofλ 0 and the entries of the matrixL the values of this oscillatory limit as well as its time-independent average over one period. This calculation includes as its leading special case the result of (1), confirming incidentally that γ is nonzero. To stabilize a population, the matrixL must be adjusted so thatλ 0=1. The limits calculated for the oscillatory and non-oscillatory cases then have maximum significance since they represent the limiting population vectors. We discuss a simple scheme for accomplishing stanbilization which yields as a byproduct an easily accessible scalar measure ofL's tendency to promote population growth. The reciprocal of this measure is the familiar net reproduction rate.

Notes: Abstract A field theoretical approach to the problem of continuously distributed and simultaneously active nerve cells is presented, starting with a differential-integral field equation of the form $$\frac{\partial }{{\partial t}}\psi (r,t) = H\psi (r,t) + F(r,t)$$ which relates the field ψ to its inhibitory and excitatory sourcesF by means of the field operatorH. General solutions are represented with the aid of Green's functions. The Green's function, giving the response of the system to a very short point stimulation, is calculated in the absence of interaction between neurons and for a special case of non-local interaction. Possible applications of the theory are demonstrated for receptive fields and neuronal mechanisms in the vertebrate retina.

Notes: Abstract Based on A. V. Hill's three-component model, mechanical properties of the contractile element (CE), such as velocity and tension, were determined as muscle shortening and loads in quick-release or afterloaded isotonic contraction. The method is applicable for studying cardiac mechanics, to obtain force-velocity data of the same CE length at varous afterloads. Analysis of the energetics of cardiac muscle was based on simulation studies of cardiac mechanics (Wong 1971, 1972). By proper derivation, the conventional contractile element work (CEW) was found to be a minor energy determinant. The tension-time integral and tension-independent heat (Ricchiuti and Gibbs, 1965) represent energy utilization for activation and maintenance of tension, the primary energy determinant.

Notes: Abstract This paper shows that the linear programming formulation of the two-commodity network flow problem leads to a direct derivation of the known results concerning this problem. An algorithm for solving the problem is given which essentially consists of two applications of the Ford—Fulkerson max flow computation. Moreover, the algorithm provides constructive proofs for the results. Some new facts concerning feasible integer flows are also given.

Notes: Abstract The solution of the Chinese postman problem using matching theory is given. The convex hull of integer solutions is described as a linear programming polyhedron. Algorithms for finding Euler tours and related problems are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Pivot column and row selection methods used by the Devex code since 1965 are published here for the first time. After a fresh look at the iteration process, the author introduces dynamic column weighting factors as a means of estimating gradients for the purpose of selecting a maximum gradient column. The consequent effect of this column selection on rounding error is observed. By allowing that a constraint may not be positioned so exactly as its precise representation in the computer would imply, a wider choice of pivot row is made available, so making room for a further selection criterion based on pivot size. Three examples are given of problems having between 2500 and 5000 rows, illustrating the overall time and iteration advantages over the standard simplex methods used today. The final illustration highlights why these standard methods take so many iterations. These algorithms were originally coded for the Atlas computer and were re-coded in 1969 for the Univac 1108.

Notes: Abstract This paper studies how the solution of the problem of minimizingQ(x) = 1/2x T Kx − k T x subject toGx ≦ g andDx = d behaves whenK, k, G, g, D andd are perturbed, say by terms of size∈, assuming thatK is positive definite. It is shown that in general the solution moves by roughly∈ ifG, g, D andd are not perturbed; whenG, g, D andd are in fact perturbed, much stronger hypotheses allow one to show that the solution moves by roughly∈. Many of these results can be extended to more general, nonquadratic, functionals.

Notes: Abstract Jack Edmonds developed a new way of looking at extremal combinatorial problems and applied his technique with a great success to the problems of the maximal-weight degreeconstrained subgraphs. Professor C. St. J.A. Nash-Williams suggested to use Edmonds' approach in the context of hamiltonian graphs. In the present paper, we determine a new set of inequalities (the “comb inequalities”) which are satisfied by the characteristic functions of hamiltonian circuits but are not explicit in the straightforward integer programming formulation. A direct application of the linear programming duality theorem then leads to a new necessary condition for the existence of hamiltonian circuits; this condition appears to be stronger than the ones previously known. Relating linear programming to hamiltonian circuits, the present paper can also be seen as a continuation of the work of Dantzig, Fulkerson and Johnson on the traveling salesman problem.

Notes: Abstract The problem considered here is that of fitting a linear function to a set of points. The criterion normally used for this is least squares. We consider two alternatives, viz., least sum of absolute deviations (called the L1 criterion) and the least maximum absolute deviation (called the Chebyshev criterion). Each of these criteria give rise to a linear program. We develop some theoretical properties of the solutions and in the light of these, examine the suitability of these criteria for linear estimation. Some of the estimates obtained by using them are shown to be counter-intuitive.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Choosing an internal floating-point representation for a binary computer with given word-length is influenced by two factors: the size of the range of admissible numbers and the precision of the respective floating-point arithmetic. In this paper “precision” is defined by a statistical model of rounding errors. According to this definition base 4 floating-point arithmetic on an average produces smaller rounding errors than all other floating-point arithmetics with a base 2k, provided that the ranges of numbers have equal size.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In this paper we consider finite difference operators which approximate the dirichlet problem of general nonlinear elliptic equations. For such nonlinear operators we give several criteria which insure the validity of an discrete monotonicity and maximum principle. In the case of linear difference operators one of these criteria is known as a necessary and sufficient condition.

Notes: Summary Sequences of hemispheric five day mean minimum brightness mosaics are used to plot the variation in the Antarctic pack ice edge for three summer seasons and to locate extremes at particular dates. Average and extreme areas of sea ice over the hemisphere are measured as a function of time. The geographical distribution of major polynyas is shown and the decay pattern of sea ice in the main continental embayments is described and found to show considerable similarity in each season. Some evidence is shown that apparent substantial differences in ice extent between October 1st, 1969 and the corresponding date in 1970 are qualitatively consistent with observed variations in the strength of the southern westerlies in October of both years.

Notes: Summary Quantitative radiance measurements from NASA's ATS-3 geosynchronous satellite have been used to develop and test a statistical forecst method to predict air terminal weather over the very short range (0–6 hours) time period. Results from more than 800 hourly weather situations at a wide range of U. S. weather stations show that the parameters of ceiling and total opaque cloud cover can be specified or predicted with skill, exceeding peristence forecasts for time periods greater than two hours. Statistical predictions based on satellite data alone are much better than those based on some 500mb upper air parameters tested. The potential global applications of the satellite data-based forecasts can apparently be improved by the use of certain criteria, such as region of interest, in developing and applying the multiple regression equation. Considering the present status of objective short range weather forecasting, these first results using geosynchronous satellite data demonstrate a new potential for improved forecasts at this scale.

Notes: Summary The results of thunderstorm observations made with local lightning flash counters at Poona during 1967–1969 are presented. A positive correlation between the average total count when the count exceeds 20 per hour on a 5V/m counter, and the number of days per month when thunder is heard has been established. The diurnal and seasonal variations in thunderstorm activity are described. It is seen that although a single isolated storm can vitiate the normal pattern of thunderstorm activity in a month or season, a long term statistical average can be taken with a greater degree of confidence as a better index of electrical activity than the current aural method of observation of thunderstorms.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The importance of each term of the vorticity equation in (x, y, p, t)-coordinates (advection-, divergence and curlterm) for the production and reduction of vorticity is examined. In two synoptic situations the values of these terms are calculated for large areas. Except in the divergence term, calculations are made geostrophically. It is shown that in a stationary Ω-situation mainly the advection-and divergence term are responsible for vorticity changes. By contrast, strong cyclonic development can be appreciably influenced by the curl term, whose contribution to vorticity creation rises considerably in such a case.
