In:  P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow | Supplement to: Vinogradov, Mikhail E (1973): New data on the quantitative distribution of plankton in the deep layers of the Sea of Japan. Oceanology, 13, 904-907
    Publikationsdatum: 2023-07-10
Beschreibung: Vertical distribution of zooplankton biomass from the surface to bottom layers (3400 m) is examined. Material was collected layer by layer by a BR 113/140 net at 41°59' N and 133°37' E on July 2 and 3, 1970. Quantity of plankton below 1000 m was found to be much less than at corresponding depths in the adjacent regions of the ocean. This impoverishment is due to absence of oceanic bathypelagic animals in deep layers of the Sea of Japan. Absence of specialized predators (plankton-feeders) deep in the Sea of Japan results in underconsumption of interzonal animals that sink to great depths. Upon dying they should reach the floor in larger quantities than in the ocean.

In:  Supplement to: Noakes, T D; Longton, R E (1988): 2.4 Pathways of water movement in relation to structure and micromorphology in Antarctic Mosses. Polarforschung, 58(2/3), 125-138, hdl:10013/epic.29608.d001
    Publikationsdatum: 2023-07-10
Beschreibung: Experimental observations on pathways of water movement are discussed in relation to anatomical and micromorphological features of five moss species from Signy Island, South Orkney Islands. Significant internal uptake of water was recorded only in the mesic species Polytrichum alpinum (internal=〉60% of total) and Bartramia patens (internal=c.30% of total), in experiments in which uptake by cut shoots was compared in individuals with the external pathway blocked, and others with both external and internal pathways open. Internal uptake maintained shoot water content close to full turgor in P. alpinun and at 30% of full tugor in B. patens, whereas water content fell to 12-15% dry wt. in the lithophytes Andreaea gainii and Schistidium antarctici and in the mesic/hydric species Drepanocladus uncinatus, with the external pathway blocked. Where both pathways were open water uptake from below maintained water content at or above full turgor in shoots of all five species. External water uptake by capillarity occurred most rapidly in the lithophytes, and was slower in initially air-dry than in hydrated shoots of the other species. The spreading limbs of leaves in B. patens and P. alpinum are water-repellent, as are the bright green leaves in the apical 1-2 mm of dry shoots of the lithophytes. A central strand of hydroids is well-developed only in B. patens and P. alpinum. These two species have deposits of surface wax on parts of the leaves, and surface wax also occurs on the green apical leaves in some specimens of S. antarcticum and other lithophytes from Signy Island.

    Publikationsdatum: 2023-07-10
Beschreibung: Laboratory experiments show that undercooling to about -5°C occurs in colonized Beacon sandstones of the Ross Desert, Antarctica. High-frequency temperature oscillations between 5°C and -5°C or -10°C (which occur in nature on the rock surface) did not damage Hemichloris antarctica. In a cryomicroscope, H. antarctica appeared to be undamaged after slow or rapid cooling to -50°C. l4CO2 incorporation after freezing to -20°C was unaffected in H. antarctica or in Trebouxia sp. but slightly depressed in Stichococcus sp. (isolated from a less extreme Antarctic habitat). These results suggest that the freezing regime in the Antarctic desert is not injurious to endolithic algae. It is likely that the freezing-point depression inside the rock makes available liquid water for metabolic activity at subzero temperatures. Freezing may occur more frequently on the rock surface and contribute to the abiotic nature of the surface.

Beschreibung: The origin of the Campeche Escarpment in the Gulf of Mexico has been attributed to several causes. Some suggest that the scarp represents a fault scarp, others suggest that its origin is a function of upbuilding and outbuilding likened, in some cases, to that of delta building. Still others suggest that the scarp represents the detrital accumulation seaward of a barrier or reef complex. In order to clarify these possible interpretations, Site 86 was located on a bench at a depth of 780 fathoms in the vicinity of the Campeche Escarpment.

Beschreibung: The western margin of Sardinia (had been explored in the Spring of 1970 by the R/V Jean Charcot of CNEXO. It showed that the basement ridge west of Sardinia lies at the very distal edge of the continental slope and has effectively dammed an upslope sedimentary basin which is presently isolated from the Balearic Abyssal Plain. Consequently a series of holes was contemplated along an east to west transverse of the Charcot profile.

Beschreibung: The single "raison d'être" for selecting Site 126 was to explore the pre-evaporite history of the eastern Mediterranean and hopefully to establish the paleoenvironment which preceded the Late Miocene salinity crisis. The selcetd site is in a deep cleft in the Mediterranean Ridge in the central Ionian Sea, a cleft that cuts more than 250 meters below the level of Horizon M and at the same time is floored by flat-lying sediments. A secondary objective of the cleft site-selection was to ascertain what kind of sediment makes up the horizontal fill and hopefully to determine some details of the history and mechanics of the depression-filling process.

Beschreibung: Site 172 was continuously cored to a depth of 24 meters in a sediment pond 140 kilometers south of the Murray fracture zone. The upper 9 meters consist of a moderate brown pelagic clay which changes to a zeolite-rich brown clay, brown clay zeolitite and zeolitite in the lower 9 to 24 meters. An Early Oligocene (35 to 38 my) nannofossil horizon occurs near an extrusive basalt encountered at 24 meters. These sediments are older than the 29 my age indicated by a recent identification of magnetic anomaly 8 in the "disturbed" zone. The age discrepancy suggests that the magnetic anomalies in the "disturbed" zone are still not identified correctly.

Beschreibung: The oceanic region between the Tonga-Kermadec Trench and New Zealand to the east and Australia to the west (see map at the back of this volume) has long been regarded as an anomalous region. Prior to development of the plate tectonic theory, it was known that the eastern boundary of the region was tectonically active, the western relatively passive. The DSDP Leg 21 overall objective was to provide initial coring data which would aid in reconstructing the tectonic history and relative plate movements of the Pacific and Indian crustal plates and determining the age of the tectonic features contained within the Tasman Sea region. In particular, the age and biostratigraphy of the oldest Pacific crustal section now being subducted into the Tonga-Kermadec Trench (Site 204) and the age and composition of the South Fiji Basin and of the basement rock (Site 205).

Beschreibung: The sea floor of the western Pacific is covered by five stratigraphic units: (l)an eastward thinning wedge of late Tertiary silty clay, primarily of volcanic origin, (2) a Cretaceous to Tertiary zeolitic red clay, (3) a Late Cretaceous to Tertiary chalk/chert sequence, (4) a Cretaceous clay, and (5) a basal chalk/chert sequence. The basal chalk was deposited on the young crust at the crest of the mid-oceanic ridge, while the upper chalk was deposited beneath the equator, and the abyssal clays were deposited in abyssal depths in mid latitudes. A kinematic model has been constructed that outlines the deposition of these units on growing crust, which not only was displaced westward away from the accretion center of the mid-oceanic ridge, but northward under the equator. The average northward component of motion for the Pacific plate has been 2 cm per year from 0 to 30 m.y. and 4.4 cm per year from 30 to 100 m.y. The deep-sea deposits of the Pacific are basically and systematically time transgressive. Claims of general synchroneity for either lithostratigraphy or acoustostratigraphy are rejected as inconsistent with both the drilling data and the kinematic model of Pacific pelagic stratigraphy. A few more well sampled holes in the ancient Pacific plate combined with an appropriately refined kinematic model should yield a 'rather detailed history of the Pacific plate since the Jurassic.

Beschreibung: Quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses were performed on fourteen manganese nodules and crusts from the Waho Shelf. The analyses showed that submarine weathering has leached several elements, notably Si02, A1203, Na20, CaO and MnO from the hydrated glass surrounding the basaltic seeds of the nodules. The altered glass was enriched in Ti02, MgO, K2O and total Fe. The manganese bands formed on the altered glass were further depleted in Si02, Al203, and similar to the hydrated glass in Na2O and CaO content. The manganese-enriched zones also showed higher TiO2 and NiO than the basaltic seeds, and higher total Fe than pelagic nodules from the North Pacific. Qualitative measurement of Cu, Ni, and Co, showed relative enrichment in the manganese bands. A proposed model for manganese accretion in the Waho Shelf incorporates local submarine weathering of basalts, redistribution of Mn in marine sediments, and an influx of Mn "rain" on the sea floor.

Beschreibung: The technique of accelerator mass spectrometry (A.H.S.) has opened up a number of new potential geochronological applications of long lived cosmogenic nuclei- However the absence of any obvious stage leading to equilibrium between the radioactive and corresponding stable isotope(s) in the geochemical cycle of many of these species, complicates considerably their potential dating applications. The radioisotope 10Be (half-life 1.5 My) is formed by spallation reactions between cosmic rays and 14N, 16O in the atmosphere. It is transferred to the oceans in soluble form by precipitation and dry deposition. The 10Be et 16Al having similar chemical behaviours and being influenced by the same geophysical and geochemical phenomena before being incorporated into the marine sediments, their ratio is tested in order to date those sediments. This approach is also applied to manganese nodules and ferromanganese crusts.

Beschreibung: Detailed mapping of manganese deposits in the Kauai Channel and on the Waho Shelf adjacent to the northwest corner of Oahu is near completion. Manganese crusts and nodules are concentrated on submarine terraces between 800 and 2400 meters deep. Similarities In the geomorphology and sedimentary conditions where extensive manganese deposits are present suggest that these are primary factors controlling manganese distribution in the Hawaiian Archipelago. This information may be useful for guiding future surveys, and the technology developed for studiesiIn the Hawaiian Archipelago may have application to other areas of high topographic relief and low sediment thickness (i.e., seamounts, fracture zones, fault scarps, ridges, etc.).

Beschreibung: he proposed mining of ferromanganese deposits from the deep sea will affect benthic and pelagic environments depending to a great extent on the method of nodule retrieval and separation. Three basic deep-ocean mining systems have been proposed, each of which will effect the removal under varying conditions of water, sediment and nodules from the ocean floor. This report summarizes existing oceanographhic information on potential manganese nodule mining areas at the date of publication and presents the results of field observations in a manganese nodule area of the North Atlantic Ocean surveyed during Cruise 15 of the R/V Robert Conrad.

Beschreibung: In addition to the large nodules of manganese dioxide that pave some regions of the ocean floor, much finely divided (〈1 mm) manganese dioxide occurs within the sediment column. The fine material is a good deal more widely distributed than the large nodules, but because of the almost microscopic size of the finely divided manganese oxide, it is easily overlooked. However, the micronodules and specks of manganese oxide on the tests of forarainifera are conspicuous when the washed course fractions (〉74 micron) of sediment samples prepared for the study of foraminifera are examined with a microscope. As a byproduct of our study of the foraminifera in many deep-sea sediment cores, thousands of washed samples have accumulated in our laboratory together with notes on the occurrence of manganese oxide in cores. The objective of our study has been to search for clues regarding the conditions most favorable for precipitation of manganese oxide, by reviewing our notes and re-examining some of the washed samples, and particularly to look for a possible connection between vertical variations in abundance of manganese oxide and the climatically induced layering of the cored sediments.

Beschreibung: A seabed nuclear probe which was designed to measure up to 30 elements at parts per thousand to parts per hundred levels has been tested for the analysis of simulated manganese nodule fields. The probe contains a neutron source, californium-252, which activates the elements in the nodules. The resulting radioelements which emit characteristic gamma radiation are analyzed in situ during 2 to 200 second counting intervals with Ge{(Li) or NaI(Tl) detector systems. The spectra taken in situ in a marine environment show excellent resolution and indicated the feasibility of mapping the density and economic value of manganese nodules. The study demonstrated the feasibility of in situ analysis to map the Mn, Al, Co, V, and Cu concentrations in manganese nodule fields, and this information together with correlations between Ni, Co, Cu, and Mn obtained from a related study indicates that Ni concentrations can also be rather precisely estimated.

Beschreibung: Internal growth features of manganese nodules reveal that many nodules are structurally, chemically, and mineralogically non-uniform, largely as a result of a complex growth history. If numerous investigators are to study the mineralogical and textural features of manganese nodules, the laboratories concerned must standardize procedures to some extent so that work is not duplicated and so that results can be compared fairly. In particular, we suggest that all investigators, for example, geochemists, mineralogists, and biologists who work with individual nodules, should pay due attention to the internal complexity of nodules while pursuing their individual specialized research. Detailed investigation of the relationships between the internal structure of manganese nodules and the mineralogy and chemical composition is essential to an understanding of nodule origin and of possible problems in economic use of nodules. Research of this kind is best controlled by use of good polished sections of whole manganese nodules.

Beschreibung: Pelagic sediment recovered at DOMES Site A in the equatorial North Pacific (151°W, 9° 15?N) consists of a surface homogeneous layer, approximately 10 cm thick, overlying a strongly mottled layer that is lighter in color. The radiolarian composition of both units is Quaternary. In areas where this sediment was only a few centimeters thick, the underlying sediment was early Tertiary. Clay mineralogy and major oxide composition of the two Quaternary sediments are uniform. Their similarity to continental shale suggests that the sediment has a terrigenous source. Clay mineralogy and major oxide composition of the Tertiary sediment also are uniform, although they differ markedly from the Quarternary sediment. In contrast to the major oxides, concentrations of Mn, Co, Cu, and Ni soluble in hydroxylamine hydrochloride-acetic acid are strongly different in the surface and subsurface Quaternary sediment. Mn and Ni exhibit pronounced depletions in the subsurface sediment, Ni slightly more than Mn. Cu is also depleted in the subsurface sediment, but less than Mn. It is also depleted in the subsurface Tertiary sediment, whereas the Mn concentration remains high. Concentration of Co relative to Mn increases into the subsurface Quaternary sediment to a constant Co:Mn ratio of 3 %. The trivalent REE (the REE exclusive of Ce) and Fe exhibit little down-core variation. Distribution of elements in these sediments is closely related to their concentration in associated surface ferromanganese nodules. The nodules are of two distinct types: those from the area where the Quaternary sediment is relatively thick have delta-MnO2 as the dominant manganese mineral. The ratios of Ni:Mn, Cu:Mn, and Fe:Mn in these nodules approximate the corresponding ratios of the soluble fraction of surface sediment. Todorokite is the dominant mineral of nodules recovered from areas where the Quaternary sediment is thin. Relatively high Cu/Mn, Ni/Mn, and low Fe/Mn ratios of these nodules mirror differences between the soluble fraction of surface and subsurface Quaternary sediment. These compositional trends of sediment and nodules at DOMES Site A reflect a diagenetic origin for the todorokite nodules and a predominantly hydrogenous origin for the delta-MnO2 nodules.

The nodules were lower in manganese, iron and associated elements than the average grade of manganese nodules from other localities. A number of chemical relationships have been observed. Nickel, copper, cobalt, barium, zinc, molybdenum, strontium, sulphur and phosphorus are associated with the manganese rich phases and titanium with the iron rich phases. X-ray diffraction analysis and electron probe microanalysis results indicate that the manganese phases are similar to the disordered delta-MnO2 and "manganite" phases reported by other workers.

Beschreibung: Manganese nodules have been observed over wide areas of both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, however, deposits in the Pacific Ocean are generally much richer in elements of economic interest such as nickel, copper and cobalt. In understanding the genesis and the geochemistry involved in their formation and growth, it is important to know the total chemical composition of these nodules and how they vary within a given deposit and between deposits in the oceans of the world. The concentrations of elements: nickel, copper, cobalt, iron, manganese, silicon, and calcium, in all of the manganese nodules which have been analyzed were recently summarized by Horn et al. (1972). These observations indicate certain correlations, both positive and negative, between Mn and the associated elements within the nodules. Their data suggest similarities in chemical composition for nodules from a given area; however, the analyses of Mn nodules, like that of the ocean water, itself, has large errors associated with some of the measurements. This is understandable, since many of these measurements were intended to provide an approximate indication of elemental content. Where one is interested in carefully preparing a description of Mn nodule chemical composition which can serve as a basis for formulating theories regarding their genesis and subsequent geochemical changes in the ocean environment, then very precise and accurate analyses are essential. The purpose of this study has been to measure the concentrations of 18 elements in Mn nodules with a high degree of accuracy and determine what correlations exist between element concentrations. The scope of this study was seriously limited and therefore was confined to one area of the Pacific Ocean at approximately 22 N latitude, 114 W longitude, at an ocean depth of approximately 11,000 feet.

Beschreibung: The distribution of several metals in East Pacific Rise sediments, when normalized to Al2O3, exhibit stronger maxima near the rise crest than when simply plotted on a carbonate-free basis. The similarity (1) between the distribution of metals in ridge sediments and previously measured mean heat flow values and (2) between the composition of crestal sediments and terrestrial ore bodies associated with greenstone belts, strongly supports a hydrothermal origin for rise crest sediments.

Beschreibung: Ferromanganese nodules (equivalent to Recent manganese nodules) are described from the Upper Devonian griotte (red pelagic limestone) of the Montagne Noire (S. France) and the Cephalopodenkalk of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge, West Germany. They occur as encrustations, commonly exhibiting colloform structures, around skeletal material and limestone clasts. The nodules are associated with encrusting foraminifera and a development in the sublittoral environment is envisaged. Chemically, the ferromanganese nodules are depleted in manganese relative to iron, compared with Recent nodules, a loss which is attributed to diagenetic migration of manganese. Electron probe studies show that manganese covaries positively with calcium, but negatively with iron and silicon. Diagenetic enrichment of hematite occurs in the griotte at hardground horizons where two periods of mineralization can be established. The Devonian ferromanganese nodules show that solution of nodules has not occurred on burial.

Beschreibung: The sediments of Leg 15 included several noteworthy occurrences of authigenic, volcanic and continentally derived minerals. Of these, the occurrence of native copper in pelagic clays, the relatively well developed crystals of clinoptilolite in several older volcanic clays, the widespread authigenic K-feldspar, and the occurrences of garnet (one of which appears to be authigenic; the other, not positively identified, may be volcanic) are especially interesting. At Site 150 of Leg 15 several nodules were found in Cores 4 and 5 at subbottom depths of about 100 to 115 meters. It is not certain from the occurrence whether these nodules were a) buried, having grown elsewhere, or b) were found in their present position as a result of drilling disturbance. The depth of the occurrence appears to preclude the last possibility.

Beschreibung: The properties of ferromanganese concretions reflect in many ways the marine environment in which they were formed, and points to a variety of probable genetic mechanisms in different environments. There are also chemical and probably mineralogical variations which follow the various growth habits, and are a function of the environment. This report presents morphologic descriptions of the HIG manganese collection. Material described here was collected by the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Department of Oceanography during cruises of the R/V MAHI (1968-70), R/V KANA KEOKI (1971-72), and R/V TERITU (1971-72) and during the experimental test of a Continuous Line Bucket nodule retrieval experiment with the Japanese R/V Koyukoyu_Maru_II in 1972.

Beschreibung: Accumulation rates of 1-2 mm/million years are reported for manganese crusts on deep-sea rocks. These rates are the same as most reported accretion rates for manganese nodules suggesting a similar mechanism for this formation. Manganese crusts on large deep-sea rocks provide convincing evidence that net sediment accumulation in these areas has been zero for many millions of years.

Beschreibung: Pelagic clay and Mn nodules from DOMES sites in the North Pacific and a varved glacial lake deposit from Connecticut were analysed for Os concentration and isotopic composition by isotope-dilution secondary ion mass spectrometry after treatment by NiS fusion or oxalic acid leaching. Bulk pelagic clay from DOMES site C has 187Os/186Os = 6.5 and Os = 0.14 ng/g. Oxalic acid leaches of this same sediment and of Mn nodules from DOMES sites A and C have more radiogenic 187Os/186Os ratios which average 8.3. Bulk glacial Lake Hitchcock sediment has 187Os/186Os = 12.5 and Os = 0.06 ng/g. The total Os flux to North Pacific pelagic clay is 7 to 10 ng Os/cm**2/10**6 y. Lake Hitchcock sediment provides an integrated value for the local crustal 187Os/186Os ratio. The oxalic acid leaches are assumed to attack hydrogenous phases selectively. A simple model in which the only sources of Os to the ocean are continental crust with the isotopic composition of Lake Hitchcock (187Os/186Os = 12.5) and extraterrestrial particles with 187Os/186Os = 1.1 results in a cosmic flux of osmium to the sediment of 4.9 ng Os/cm**2/10**6 y of which 20% is hydrogenous. A model in which the sources of Os to the ocean are continental crust with an 187Os/186Os ratio of 30 (from the model of Palmer and Turekian, 1986), oceanic mantle or crust with 187Os/186Os = 1.04 and extraterrestrial particles with 187Os/186Os = 1.1 results in a cosmic flux of Os to the sediment of 5.7 ng Os/cm**2/10**6 y of which none is hydrogenous. These extraterrestrial Os fluxes correspond to maximum C-1 chondrite accretion rates of between 4.9 × 104 and 5.6 × 104 tonnes/y.

Beschreibung: Late Cretaceous and younger sediments dredged from the upper continental slope and canyon walls in the Great Australian Bight Basin between 126° and 136°E broadly confirm the stratigraphy which had been established previously from scattered exploration wells. Late Cretaceous to Early Eocene marine and marginal marine terrigenous sediments are overlain by Middle Eocene and younger pelagic carbonate (fine limestone and calcareous ooze). The samples provide the first evidence of truly marine Maastrichtian sedimentation, with abundant calcareous nannoplankton, on the southern margin of the continent. Other samples of interest include Precambrian sheared granodiorite on the upper slope south of Eyre Terrace, Paleocene phosphatic sediment in 'Eucla' Canyon at 128° 30'E, and terrigenous Early Miocene mudstone at 133° 20' and 134° 50'E. The mudstone is of note as an exception to the uniform pelagic carbonate wackestone and ooze which characterise Middle Eocene and younger sedimentation at all other sites. Fragments of alkali basalt lava of unknown age were recovered in 'Eucla' Canyon. Cores are mostly pelagic calcareous ooze, but those from submarine canyons include terrigenous turbidites.
