In:  Supplement to: Prescott, D M (1988): The geochemistry and palaeoenvironmental significance of iron pisoliths and ferromanganese crusts from the Jurassic of Mallorca, Spain. Eclogae Geologicae Helvetiae, 81(2), 387-414, https://doi.org/10.5169/seals-166185

Description: The geochemistry of ferromanganese crusts and iron pisoliths from the Jurassic of Mallorca is investigated. The deposits are associated with Toarcian condensed sequences and hardgrounds which overlie Lower Lias platform limestones. Goethite is the principal mineral in the crusts and the pisoliths. which are both rich in iron; ramsdellite is the manganese phase in the ferromanganese crusts which contain 3-5% Mn. Inter-element relationships established by electron microprobe analysis show that P, V and perhaps Cr are sorbed with Fe, while Ni, Ti, Si and perhaps Ba and Co correlate positively with Mn. Submarine hydrothermal exhalations were the likely source of much of the material, though continental run-off waters probably contributed elements towards the growth of the ferromanganese crusts. Composition-depth curves suggest a gradual deepening of the drowned margin, though appear to over-estimate the depth of formation of the deposits. Deposition occurred on a limestone seamount on subsiding continental crust during the early rifting phase which preceded the opening of the Ligurian Tethys.

Notes: [Auszug] Neutral red (0-005 per cent solution) and methylene blue (0*010 per cent solution) appeared first in the tail of streaming A. proteus ; but in each case the dye was soon distributed throughout the cytoplasm in small vacuoles which eventually became coloured intensely red or blue. Notes: SYNOPSIS. Short sections of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the elongated macronucleus of Euplotes eurystomus were labeled by means of a short exposure to tritiated (H3-) thymidine to follow by autoradiography the fate of the labeled DNA during amitotic reorganization of the macronucleus. During amitosis the radioactive DNA that was restricted during interphase to short sections of the nucleus is dispersed and becomes evenly distributed throughout each daughter macronucleus.Although the reorganization bands normally originate only at the ends of the macronucleus, additional bands can start at other places on the macronuclear surface. Bands of the same macronucleus originate with a high degree of synchrony. DNA synthesis is a constant feature of the rear zone of every reorganization band.

Notes: Abstract DNA was isolated from macronuclei and micronuclei of the ciliated protozoan, Stylonychia mytilus under conditions that minimize the possibility of DNA degradation. Macronuclear DNA has an S value of 10 to 11 in sucrose gradients. Macronuclear DNA has an average molecular weight of 1.15×106 daltons and a range of molecular weights of 1.0×106 to 1.95×106 daltons. The average length of macronuclear DNA, measured by electron microscopy, is 0.80 microns and the range is 0.2 to 2.2 microns. Almost all micronuclear DNA pieces are too long to be measured by electron microscopy. The shortest piece of micronuclear DNA found was 15.0 microns in length.

Notes: Abstract The location of satellite DNA sequences in metaphase chromosomes has been studied in the kangaroo rat by the in situ hybridization technique, staining techniques and phase contrast microscopy. The HS-β satellite DNA is located at the kinetochores of all but three chromosome pairs. The HD satellite is located predominantly in the short arms of the chromosomes containing HS-β and in the kinetochores of chromosome pairs that lack HS-β. The regions that contain the satellite DNA sequences can also be identified by the Giemsa staining technique, and can be visualized with phase contrast microscopy or following Feulgen staining of fixed chromosome preparations.
