Notes: Generalized depletion curves for desorption (and breakthrough curves for adsorption) were calculated for a system characterized by the Langmuirtype equilibria and controlled by a film type rate model. The depletion points generally appear sooner than the corresponding breakthrough points, and the desorption profiles are significantly broader than the corresponding adsorption curves. These phenomena may be best explained in terms of the prevailing driving forces. The effects of adsorbate properties and operating variables (inlet composition and flow rate) were established and experimentally substantiated.

Notes: The angular light intensity distribution (ALID) at the surface of several elliptical reflector-photoreactors was determined experimentally using the optically dense potassium ferrioxalate actinometer. The distributions were well correlated by the model \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$I_w (\theta) = \overline {I_w } [1 + \beta \cos \theta]$$\end{document} The correlating parameter β was a function of the ratio of the light source and photoreactor tube diameters. The theoretical effect of ALID on reactor performance was determined for a reaction which proceeded via direct absorption by the reactant. The ALID effect on performance was most pronounced under conditions of high optical densities and low radial mixing rates of reactant.

Description / Table of Contents: Cycloacylation of 1-(Cyanoamino)adamantane with Bifunctional Acyl Chlorides and some Subsequent ReactionsAddition of oxalyl chloride to 1-(cyanoamino)adamantane (1) gave the dichloro compound 2. Hydrolysis of 2 yielded 1-(1-adamantyl)parabanic acid (3), and reaction of 2 with bifunctional nucleophilic agents afforded the spiro-compounds 6-9. Elimination of HCl from 2 followed by treatment with sec. amines gave 1-(1-adamantyl)-2-amino-2-imidazoline-4.5-diones 11a-e. Reaction of 1.1-cyclobutanedicarboxylic acid dichloride with 1 and subsequent hydrolysis led to the formation of the barbituric acid derivative 13.

Description / Table of Contents: Hydroxylamine Derivatives, IL. Preparation and Cyclization of Substituted 1- and 2-HydroxyguanidinesAddition of substituted hydroxylamines to carbodiimides yields substituted 2- or 1-hydroxy-guanidines (1 or 4). In some cases C-(aminooxy)formamidines (7) and an alkoxybiguanide (9) are obtained. 1 and 4 react with chloroformic acid esters to give substituted 3-amino-δ2-1.2.4-oxadiazolin-5-ones (2) and 3-imino-1.2.4-oxadiazolidin-5-ones (5), respectively. Reaction of 1 and 4 with carbonimidoyl dichlorides leads to derivatives of 3-amino-5-imino-δ2-1.2.4-oxadiazoline (3) and of 3.5-diimino-1.2.4-oxadiazolidine (6), respectively.
3.5-Diimino-Derivate (3 bzw. 6) übergeführt.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Mechanism of the Wolff RearrangementThe thermal and electron impact induced Wolff rearrangement of [carbonyl-13C]azibenzil (6) occurs without migration of the labelling. In contrast in the photochemically performed reaction a part of the label is found in the tertiary carbon atom of the resulting diphenylacetic acid, which proves the formation of an oxirene intermediate. The amount of the oxirene is smaller when the water concentration is increased. The participation of the oxirene intermediate is discussed on the basis of two alternative reaction mechanisms.

Description / Table of Contents: Fragmentation Reactions of Carbonyl Compounds with Electronegative β-Substituents, XXI Cyanocyclobutanes from TosyloxyolefinsTosyloxyolefins 6-10 are prepared from the β-tosyloxyaldehydes 1-3 by Knoevenagel condensation with malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate. Reaction with potassium alkoxide produces 2-alkoxy-1.1-dicyano and -1-cyano-1-alkoxycarbonylcyclobutanes (11-17). Reduction with boron hydrides leads to 1.1-dicyano, 1-cyano-1-alkoxycarbonyl and 1-carbamoyl-1-cyanocyclobutanes (19-25) in good yields.

Notes: Secondary nucleation at low supersaturation for the ammonium sulfate-water system was studied using a seeded continuous crystallizer. Counter size distribution measurements in the subsieve size range indicated that nuclei are formed by microattrition of seed crystals and that the growth rate of the nuclei is very small. Nucleaion rate was correlated with the characteristics of the secondary environment. The results of this correlation, which shows strong dependence on stirring rate and essentially linear dependence on solids concentration, indicate that secondary nuclei are generated by collisions of the seed crystals with the impeller blades.
