Description / Table of Contents: Summary: The results of investigations on the structural changes of Greenland snow during age-hardening in the first 49 hr after ejection by a Peter snow miller from a trench 4.7 ft deep are reported, and the method of study is described. The samples of snow were taken at various distances from the trench 1, 3, 14, 25, and 49 hr after deposition, and their changes were studied as a function of time and distance from the trench. The porosity remained constant at an average of 50 ± 3%. The number of grains/cm^2 decreased with time and increased with distance from the trench because of the different speeds of sedimentation and wind sifting. The mean grain cross-section showed a similar dependence. The relative length of grain boundaries increased with time and slightly with distance from the trench, while the mean length of new grain-to-grain boundaries increased with age and decreased with distance from the trench. The mean number of adjacent grains per grain vs. relative length of grain boundaries showed a linear relation. A slight increase of new boundaries with increasing number of neighbors was also observed. Suggestions for a precise study of the age-hardening process of snow are made.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: Experiments have been carried out on the plastic deformation of thick-walled snow-ice cylinders under hydrostatic pressure as a function of pressure and temperature. At constant circumferential stress and temperature the natural strain rate of closure is a constant. This constant varies with the circumferential stress according to a sine function and is exponentially dependent on temperature with an energy of activation of 14.1 kcal/mole at an average circumferential stress of 3.1 kg/cm^2. The mechanism of the plastic flow is in agreement with a mechanism proposed previously, that is, flow between grain boundaries takes place.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: The distribution of temperature throughout an idealized ice cap is studied. The idealized ice cap is considered as one with a constant growth rate, without internal movement, subject to a linear climatic change and to a constant geothermal influx. The problem is treated as a Stefan-type problem and the solution is obtained by the principle of superposition. The results indicate that the temperature at the base of the ice cap rises with time and eventually would reach the melting point of the ice. Under such conditions, it is concluded that the ice cap is not resting on a permafrost base as suggested by previous investigation.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: The temperature distribution in snow subjected to gamma radiation from an operating nuclear reactor is analyzed mathematically, assuming that the effect of radiation is equivalent to a continuous heat source, the intensity of which is a function of the radial distance from the reactor. Steady-state solutions are derived for two cases: when the radial distance is 13 ft and when it is 19.1 ft. The results indicate that the temperature of the snow in certain regions in the several feet immediately below the foundation will exceed the design limit of 20°F. Increasing the shielding of the reactor will reduce the intensity of the radiation and snow temperature. Other possible ways to reduce the snow temperature include the use of refrigeration coils and the forcing of the atmospheric air through the snow.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: The relations between rate of snow accumulation, snow density, snow age, and depth below the surface are formulated in terms of a compactive viscosity factor, which is assumed to be a function of only density and temperature, with parameters which will vary with the snow-type sequences of different climatic areas of high polar glaciers. The theory could be useful in an analysis of the data obtained from the large number of snow pits in Greenland, Ellesmere Island, and Antarctica.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: A simple theory is proposed for crack formation and development by soil desiccation on the basis of laboratory experiments utilizing soil samples (Bloomington till) with max particle size of 1 mm diam. held in flat wooden containers. The crack pattern is more dependent on the thickness of the soil sample than on temperature or humidity. Some effect is caused also by differences in the bottom material of the containers. The area of cells made by crack patterns has a log normal size distribution. Total length of cracks decreases with increase in sample thickness. The number of sides of cells also depends on the thickness. Cracking was found to begin from the center of the soil layer and to propagate to the surface or bottom with non-uniform speed.

Description / Table of Contents: Rezension: Die Zukunft gestalten" (ID 5/06) hatte die Schaffung eines "Weltzukunftsrats" (WFC) und seiner Agenda zum Inhalt, einer NGO auf höchster Ebene. (2)

Description / Table of Contents: In the monograph results of long-term ground and remote sensing experimental and theoretical investigations of heat-water exchange of typical permafrost landscapes and small river basins of Eastern Siberia and its factors situated in subarctic tundra, plain taiga and southern mountain taiga are generalized. Detailed maps of landscape structure of range grounds as well as results of analysis of wide range of parameters and variables of permafrost landscapes characterizing spatial and temporal variability of their state in daily, seasonal and long-term scales are presented. Zonal-landscape features of heat and water exchange as well as water regime of small river basins have been revealed. Spatial distribution of vertical turbulent heat and moisture flows in the boundary layer of the atmosphere above heterogeneous surface by measurements from board a plane has been investigated. Spatial and temporal analysis of thermo- and water-physical properties of perennially frozen grounds, which are applied as parameters in hydro-climatic models, has been fulfilled. Processes of interaction of surface and underground waters on plain and in the mountains have been considered, as well as cryogenic phenomena, which have considerable impact upon water regime of rivers and permafrost landscapes.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: The results of experiments on the bonding of polished and microtomed surfaces of bubble-free ice samples at -5°C with various loads are reported. Only a small part of the available surface area appeared to be bonded, this area increasing with the bonding load. Surfaces apposed immediately after preparation showed an appreciably higher force of separation than those joined after a time interval. The force of separation for surfaces placed together at 0% relative humidity was higher than that at 100% relative humidity. A simplified theory of bonding of irregular ice surfaces is formulated in the appendix. The calculations are based on the assumption of a distribution of small ice cylinders of equal cross sections but different heights located on a non-deformable plate. The cylinders are deformed by a constant force which is applied by another completely non-deformable flat plate. The deformation as a function of force and time and the force of separation as a function of load are derived, assuming that the distribution of heights is given by a box distribution (i.e., frequency of heights is constant).

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: Adhesive strength of ice for the systems ice/stainless steel and ice/optically flat fused quartz has been investigated as a function of surface roughness of steel surfaces and rates of shear for steel and quartz. The adhesive strength decreases with decreasing roughness of steel surfaces and the force vs time curves for smooth steel plates resemble those of two solids sliding over each other with a liquid layer sandwiched between them. This is particularly so in the case of quartz. The adhesive strength as a function of rate of shear is linear both for ice/stainless steel and ice/quartz; however, there are indications of yield values. The experimental results are in agreement with the assumption of a liquidlike layer on ice. Ratios of viscosity coefficient to the thickness of the layer have been evaluated for both systems and viscosity coefficients are estimated. The importance of interfacial free energy considerations is pointed out.

Description / Table of Contents: Recent collections of decapod crustaceans and serpulid worms from the Upper Cretaceous of James Ross Island have facilitated the re-description of three species previously recorded from the area and have contributed four new species. The decapods include Hoploparia stokesi (Weller), Meyeria crofti sp. nov. and Callianassa meridionalis sp. nov., and the serpluids Rotularia callosa (Stoliczka), Rotularia shackletoni (Wilckens), Rotularia dorsolaevis sp. nov. and Ditrupa varicosa sp. nov. The diagnosis of the subfamily Homarinae Mertin, 1941 is amended and observations are made on the taxonomic position and stratigraphical range of the genus Meyeria. In addition, the structure of the tube-wall of the genera Rotularia Defrance, 1827 and Ditrupa Berkeley, 1832-34, and their stratigraphical range are discussed. The age of the fauna is shown by associated ammonites to be of Lower to Middle Campanian age.

Description / Table of Contents: The editors present a state-of-the-art overview on the Physics of Space Weather and its effects on technological and biological systems on the ground and in space. It opens with a general introduction on the subject, followed by a historical review on the major developments in the field of solar terrestrial relationships leading to its development into the up-to-date field of space weather. Specific emphasis is placed on the technological effects that have impacted society in the past century at times of major solar activity. Chapter 2 summarizes key milestones, starting from the base of solar observations with classic telescopes up to recent space observations and new mission developments with EUV and X-ray telescopes (e.g., STEREO), yielding an unprecedented view of the sun-earth system. Chapter 3 provides a scientific summary of the present understanding of the physics of the sun-earth system based on the latest results from spacecraft designed to observe the Sun, the interplanetary medium and geospace. Chapter 4 describes how the plasma and magnetic field structure of the earth`s magnetosphere is impacted by the variation of the solar and interplanetary conditions, providing the necessary science and technology background for missions in low and near earth`s orbit. Chapter 5 elaborates the physics of the layer of the earth`s upper atmosphere that is the cause of disruptions in radio-wave communications and GPS (Global Positioning System) errors, which is of crucial importance for projects like Galileo. In Chapters 6-10, the impacts of technology used up to now in space, on earth and on life are reviewed.

Description / Table of Contents: If dangerous climate change is still to be avoided, a reversal of current trends must be achieved within the next ten years, and greenhouse gas emissions worldwide must be halved by 2050 compared with a 1990 baseline. However, there is a widening gap between the action that is urgently needed and current climate policy. The German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) is therefore convinced that a new climate policy dynamic is required worldwide. Currently, all eyes are on Germany: its Presidency of the Council of the European Union and Presidency of G8 offer a dual opportunity to drive climate protection forward. The Council‘s core messages are as follows: Climate protection is both worthwhile and feasible: Investing in climate protection is economically efficient, as the costs of effective climate protection are far lower than the costs of inaction. The longer we delay, the more expensive climate protection will become. For successful climate protection, a transformation of the world‘s energy systems is key. Such a transformation is technologically feasible, marking a shift away from fossil towards renewable energy sources, and requires rapid utilization of the high efficiency potentials. Further development of the UN climate convention: A consensus on the mitigation target must be forged and enshrined in the convention. To this end, the Council recommends the adoption of a global temperature guard rail limiting the rise in near-surface air temperature to a maximum of 2 °C relative to the pre-industrial value – equivalent to stabilizing the concentration of greenhouse gases below 450 ppm CO2eq. The Kyoto Protocol must be developed further and offer effective incentives for the transformation of energy systems. The industrialized countries should commit to ambitious reduction targets, while mechanisms must be established for the progressive, but differentiated integration of the newly industrializing and developing countries into commitment regimes. The issue of adaptation must also be given appropriate priority. This must include firm pledges from the industrialized countries on technological cooperation and financing. Making the most of the G8 Summit at Heiligendamm: Fresh initiatives from the heads of state and government are required to inject new life into the faltering climate process. The G8 countries and the five major newly industrializing countries, as the world‘s leading political and economic nations, should now send out clear signals and agree an ‚innovation pact on decarbonization‘. By adopting joint parameters for efficiency and CO2 emissions standards, developing a Road Atlas for the decarbonization of energy systems, and promoting technological cooperation, the G8+5 countries have the potential to become the driving force in international climate policy. Reaffirming the European Union‘s leading role: The European Union should expand its leading role in international climate protection. To maintain its credibility, it must achieve its agreed emissions reduction targets. The EU must demonstrate the viability of climate protection and provide fresh impetus for energy efficiency and renewables worldwide. The European Union‘s Emissions Trading Scheme should be developed further and improved as a matter of urgency.
