Description / Table of Contents: Adhesive substances and materials of construcitonWith a view to the practical usage of adhesive substances in industry and handicraft the most essential physical and chemical powers active in the coming about of an adhesive coupling are discussed. It is found that for the achievement of the maximum effect a certain proportion between adhesion and cohesion is the preliminary condition both with the wet and the dry adherence. The adhesive powers arising with one and the same adhesive substance are dependent on the surface-nature of the construction material used, whereas the cohesive powers vary with the nature of the adhesive substance itself. Furthermore, several in special cases arising secondary powers are described which support for hamper these processes. After an enumeration and short definition of practically important types of adhesive substances and their field of usage it is examined which aspects should be decisive for the technic of processing in the plant. On the one side different construction materials can be coupled by oen and the same adhesive substance and on the other side the same fundamental type can be available in several forms ach of which is only suiable or one kind of working up.

Description / Table of Contents: Remarks on the determination of oxygen according to the tolidine-rhodanide-tolidine- and Winkler methodIt has been observed that the determination of oxygen in the water of condensation of high-pressure Power stations after the tolidine method- introduced by Crumb and Konny-yields too low values, if divalent iron is present in the water of condensation. This error is avoided by the tolidine-rhodanide method by converting into oxygen equivalents the quantity of bivalent iron, which during the execution of the tolidine method is passed into trivalent iron by the oxygen present, and by adding these quantities of oxygen to that found All quantities of oxygen brought into the water by addition of any chemicals are also taken into consideration. The presrnce of hydracine up to 150 y/l does not have any troublesome effects. The winkler Method may only be used with oxygen contents of at least 60 y/l. It then yields theoretical values. The tolidine-rhodanide method has lately also been used for calibration of the apparatus for the testing of oxygen which has been developped by Tödt (manufactures Hartmann & Braun Frankfurt/Main) and which continnously indicates the oxygen. This apparatus has been practically tested in the Berlin Power Station West. It indicated the oxygen within a range of 5 to 50 y/l with a deviation of ±1 y/l
Freier, F. Tödt, K. Description / Table of Contents: Not-destructing crack-testing method, by means of radio-active indicatorsThe necessity of proving defects on installed equipments in a quick and easily evaluable manner revealed experiments on a test method by means of radioactiv isotopes. Supposition hereto is that the defects are lyig on a nearly plane surfac and easily within reach to hands. Particular advantages are the practicability of the method at not magnetic materials, e.g. austenic steels, and the distinct reproduction of the defects. By infiltrating the defects with alcoholic solutions of radioisotopes with small intensity by means of capillary action evaluable reproductions are obtained on apt radiant-sensible material in short times of exposure.Corrosion effects as destruciton of grain boundaries, tension crakcs by corrosion and finest cracks by corrosion fatigue have so been demonstrated graphically. Improvement of this method fo gaining larger application is possible.

Description / Table of Contents: Flame-Spraying of plastics and its possibilities of usageThis article gives a survey on the present state of the technique of flame-sprayig and its possibilities of development. The capacity of the flame-spray apparatus and its working method are explained. Furthermore its difficulties and failures are discussed as well as means and ways of avoiding them. The most important facts are: To avoid too high flame temperatures by employig air instead of oxygen; to avoid recristalization and its disadvantages of a biazial charge by using highpolimere ethylene; to avoid a later formation of pores by addition of chemically equivalent plastics e. g. Oppanol, which is amorphous even at room temperature; to avoid the overheating in spraying by temperature control, a slow cooling of sprayed objects, a thorough sheet preparation by sand-blasting and by selectig such sheet which have not yet been in touch with any chemicals before. Furthermore, the method of pulverizing plastics by deep freezing is discussed. The plastic mostly used in the flame spray technique is polyethylene. For this reason the chemical and mechanical properties of this plastic and the consequences resulting there from are described. The article closes with a short outlook on th epossible development with regard to a future selection of plastics.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion protection in light constructions of steelLight structural members of steel are tobe used for the inside of closed buildings with normal conditions of corrosion, for constructions in open air at atmospheric stressing, and for the inside of closed buildings at especially unfavorable conditions of corrosion.Preliminary condition for this structure, however, is an extensive protection against corrosion of the thin-walled steel members.According to to-days-state of science and technic the members may be protected against corrosion by means of metallic or organic coatings, hereby the kind and the thickness of the coatings being adapted to the chemical stressings in question.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion by fume of smelting plantsIn the smelting hall of a copper smeltery, where chiefly brass scrap is blown in converter furnaces on stone, portions of the fume, consisting mainly in zinc-oxyde, some lead- and tin-oxyde or such as, are gathering in the roof construction. The dirtiness is strong, but the corrosion, - notwithstanding especially favourred by contemporarily evolved parts of sulphurdioxyde and ev. carbonic acid,  -  takes place in a smaller degree but to be expected. The cause will be, that the surplus of fine-grained oxyde-dust partly keeps the surface of the iron construction neutral resp. Weakly alkaline, partly protects iron from infiltrating of the sulphurous gases.

Description / Table of Contents: Rust protectionThe enormous supplementary wants of rust-protecting coatings since 1945 seem to be satisfied only slowly. Constructions totally rusted still are to be seen, for which the necessity of time, without that considerable, for the inevitable removal obrust will reach at the least the limit of wearable. It is known that the offer of  -  coating materials is excessive,  -  however, the long approved substances, as minium and linseed oil coatings on white lead-basis (ev. still improved with wood-oil) have kept their position; among the new substances practically only zinc- resp. combinations of (potassium-barium)-chromates can be considered as supplement in pigment matter. As vehicles are appearing as valuable innovations dryig oils (especially linseed oil) varied by introducing CrO3 into the molecule, wood oil-fat acid by dehydration structural approached to castor oil varnishes, and, finally, derivates of linseed oil- or other fatty acids altered in their molecule by styrole and other more.Quite new ways were taken by the investors in U.S.A. by developping the silicones. These are derivates of the silanes etc., with carbon-substituents in the molecule, these derivates, as it were, joining the resistance and the temperature - stability of glasses (silicium!) with the film-forming capacity and te flexibility of the carbon-derivates. The outmost in this direction seem to be the high-fluorided olefines, evolved in U.S.A. too, which are naturally kept polymeric to a high degree and are in trade there as fluorothene.

Description / Table of Contents: Problems of acceptance and supervision of chemical apparatus with regard to the materials of constructionThe endeavor to raise the durability and the reliability of service of apparatus in the chemical industry supports the explanation of a series of problems concerning the materials of construction. Some characteristic examples hereto are given.Caused by repeated annealing operation the elastic limit of cast iron in cast-iron enameled pressure vessels can decrease so far that working conditions effect an increased deformation of the vessel and herewith lead to passing over the stength limit dependent on time and to get cracky the enamel coating. Therefore the decrease of strength of cast iron has to be regarded in sizing the vessels. For acid-resisting chrome-nickel-steels a rapid test method is referred, that makes possible the testing of single pieces, whereby mistakes and errors in materials easily may be found out. Besides, the question of the lengthy test of resistance aginst intergranular destruction is discussed, this test requiring urgently a standardization. In plant supervision it is to pay attention to sources of danger appearing at chemical, chemical-mechanical and thermic-mechanical and thermic-mechanical apply; hereby especially those damages are to be searched for that at first rest hidden. As examples are discussed appearances as decreasing of impact value, strength and ultimate strength, embrittleness, separation of graphite and softning, observed on heat-proof steels after long times of operating; consequences for plant control are given.

Description / Table of Contents: Wetting of metals by waterIn the following own experiments and such of other authors are discussed concerning the balances of wetting of air, water and metal,  -  the explanation of which has hardly been tried so far  - , as they appear to be of importance for the basic research of the corrosion of metals. In view of the fact that their methodic has haidty been used in corrosion research, only the basic trials are demonstrated.Prior to the careful measurings of Bartell and Cardwell only more informative researches on the wetting of metals by water were made by older authors. This article, therefore, starts from the experiments on gold and silver made by Bartell and Cardwell. Own observations on mercury follow, which admit certain qualitative statements on account of the knowledge of the respective surface tension of liquid mercury. As regards other metals, among which platinum shows particularly remarkable results, only preliminary qualitative results can be discussed. They lead to some consequences concerning the question of the sort of combining power of oxygen of air to the surfaces of metals.A survey is given on the indirectly gained values of the surface tension of solid metals. These values yield together with the heats of adsorption obtained on metal catalysers a comparative measure for the different adsorption power on metal surfaces. The conclusions from the observed rivalry between the wetting by water and the adsorption of air are compared with the results of various authors on the adsorption of gases or aequous mediums on metal surfaces. Finally a hypothesis is proposed for the traceadhesion of water (Wasscr-Haftspur-Erscheinung).

Description / Table of Contents: Phase boundary-lines, especially in their impotance for corrosionTwo phases have a common cleavageplane, whilst three phases touch one another along a boundary line only. Corroesponding to an adsorption in the first case in an adlineation in the second case. Both processes diminish the free energy and herewith the activity of the boundary, so inhibiting the possibilities of corrosion.Local elements, glow cathodes and catalysts consisting of several components are typical systems acting at microscopic boundary-lines. Cavitation is the inverse phenomenon.Macroscopic boundary-lines in partially filled containers, formed by wall, liquor and gaseous phase, are about this especially active, as being mixed with a four-phases-point-system, that results from the heterogeneity of the container wall. Gravity potentials, and electrokinetic potentials have their maximum value in the boundary-lines too.

Description / Table of Contents: High heat resisting Steels and Alloys for Gas TurbinesThe development of gas turbines has considerably advanced since the last war. Steadily growing attention is paid to its, in such cases where fuels are to be gasified before burning which on account of their high ash contents or for other reasons are not very suitable for this purpose. Quite a number of problems arise when the temperature is to be increased and cheap fuels are to be employed. These problems are of decisive importance for the further development as well as the rentability of gas turbines. Basing on reports made in London at a meeting of the Institute for Iron and Steel the following questions are discussed.1The experiments which have been made in England with a view to overcoming these difficulties and which have resulted in the development of high heat resisting steels and alloys.2The present state of knowledge in England concernig the influence exerted on these steels and alloys by the free oxygen and sulphur contained in the mediums.3The sort of residues on combustion and their influence on the corrosion of the materials of construction.

Description / Table of Contents: Measurement of the oxyde-film on platinum. IIThe difficulty is accented to prepare solutions of electrolytes totally free of oxygen. The appearing of impulses of current, arriving in consequence of interruption and re-circuiting of a cell Pt/electrolyte / saturated CdSO4/Cd, is attributed to accumulating of oxygen or other depolarisators at the cathode. The current-flow in such a cell was tested anew at an oxygen-concentration of 0,3 mg/litre in its dependance on the time of switching off. The Coulomb-values are followig up to times of interruption for 1 minute to the formula of Tödt Cb = i0 · t, whereat i0 represents the steady current value and t the time of interrupting. At interruptions of current for 3 or 10 minutes this formula is failing, against that the formula of Grubitsch Cb = K· √t describes the relation of current-flow to the time of interrupting in the whole time interval tested. Therefore it is assumed that the formula of Tödt is to be considered as a limit case of the general formulation. The taking-up of oxygen on the surface of platinum is tried to be explained by adsorption by means of initiating atoms and a succeedig surface-diffusion of the oxygen which is deteminating the rapidity. By ths mechanism the formula √t could be explained.
