Notizen: A finite strip method is presented for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of prismatic structures under arbitrary loading. The method employs an iterative finite element approach but replaces numerical integration by an explicit formulation. A computer program has been developed and is described in the paper; a numerical example is given.

Notizen: A stabilization procedure is developed for controlling the kinematic modes of the four-node, bilinear quadrilateral element when single-point quadrature is used. These kinematic modes manifest themselves by spatial oscillations or singularity of the total stiffness. In this stabilization procedure, additional generalized strains are defined which are activated by the kinematic modes; these generalized modes are furthermore not activated by rigid body motions regardless of the shape of the quadrilateral. By using a scaling law developed in an earlier paper, the stabilization parameters are defined so they do not adversely affect the element's performance. Several problems which are subject to kinematic modes are presented to illustrate the performance of this stabilization procedure for linear problems.

Notizen: A method is developed which basically concerns how to reduce the necessary storage and cost of solving a set of algebraic equations arising from applying the initial stress technique to the analysis of a uniformly layered elastic-plastic soil. Advantage is taken of the geometrical symmetry of the problem and the consequent symmetry of the stiffness matrix. The nodal values are expanded in a discrete Fourier series so that a two-dimensional problem is reduced to a number of one-dimensional problems.

Notizen: We consider numerical methods for initial value problems for second-order systems of ordinary differential equations, analysing them by applying them to the test equation We discuss conditions which ensure an oscillatory numerical solution and the desirability of such a property. We also use a slightly more general test equation to derive conditions which ensure that the numerical forced oscillation is in phase with the true forced oscillation. To illustrate the theory, we consider the damping and phase properties of some frequently used methods.

Notizen: An elasto-plastic analysis of anisotropic plates and shells is undertaken by means of the finite element displacement method. A thick shell formulation accounting for shear deformation is considered, which is based on a degenerate three-dimensional continuum element. The accommodation of variable material properties, not only along the surface of the structure but also through the thickness, is made possible by a discrete layered approach. Although isoparametric elements of the Serendipity family give satisfactory solutions for thick and moderately thin shells the results exhibit ‘locking’ for an increasing ratio of span to thickness. To develop a numerical model which is applicable to thick or thin plates and shells, the nine-node Lagrangian element and the Heterosis element are also introduced into the present model. Plastic yielding is based on the Huber-Mises yield surface extended by Hill for anisotropic materials. The yield function is generalized by introducing anisotropic parameters of plasticity which are updated during the material strain hardening history. Numerical examples are presented and compared with available solutions. The effects of anisotropy on these solutions are also discussed.

Notizen: When a homogeneous elastic continuum is modelled by a non-uniform finite element grid, the differences in the size of adjacent finite elements can cause a spurious wave reflection which does not exist in the continuum. Extending previous studies in which the spurious wave reflection was investigated for the case of two uniform grids with a sudden element size change from one grid to the other, the present study deals with the case when the two uniform grids of different element sizes are separated by a transition zone through which the element size varies gradually, either by a geometric progression or by an arithmetic progression. The solution is carried out in complex variables and numerical plots of the results are given. When the ratio of wavelength to the largest element size is as low as 4 : 1, the spurious wave reflection is very significant, while for the ratios over 10 : 1 it is insignificant. Inserting a transition zone with gradually varying element size between the two uniform parts of the grid somewhat mitigates the phenomenon of spurious reflection, but this is significant only when the ratio of element sizes in the uniform grids is small (less than about 1·5 : 1). Varying the element size throughout the transition zone in an arithmetic progression seems slightly better than in a geometric progression. The spurious wave reflection is less pronounced for higher-order elements, in particular for linear strain elements as compared to constant strain elements. The spurious reflection is also less severe for consistent mass than for lumped mass.

Notizen: We have assessed the accuracy of a commercially available computer software package for finite element method calculations of magnetostatic fields. The computer program, MSC/NASTRAN,Available from the MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation, Los Angeles, CA 90041, U.S.A. is well known for its wide applicability in structural analysis and heat transfer problems. We exploit the fact that the differential equations of magnetostatics are identical to those for heat transfer if the magnetic field problem is formulated with the reduced scalar potential.1 Consequently, the powerful, optimized numerical routines of NASTRAN can immediately be applied to two- and three-dimensional linear magneto-statics problems. Application of the NASTRAN reduced scalar potential approach to a ‘worst case’ two-dimensional problem for which an analytic solution is available has yielded much better accuracy than was recently reported2 for a reduced scalar potential calculation using a different finite element program. Furthermore, our method exhibits completely satisfactory performance with regard to computational expense and accuracy for a linear electromagnet with an air gap. Our analysis opens the way for large three-dimensional magnetostatics calculations at far greater economy than is possible with the more commonly used vector potential and boundary integral methods.

Notizen: This paper presents an algorithm which determines the invertibility of any planar, triangular quadratic isoparametric finite element transformation. Extensions of the algorithm to three-dimensional isoparametric finite element transformations yield conditions which guarantee invertibility of 10-node tetrahedra and 8-node bricks. The mathematical basis for the algorithm focuses on the Jacobian as a continuous function defined over a compact set where the Jacobian attains a maximum and a minimum value. The algorithm then determines whether these values are of opposite sign.

Notizen: The pulse-spectrum technique (PST), an iterative numerical algorithm, is presented and extended to solve the inverse problems arising from the dynamic structural identification and structural design problems. A simple one-dimensional shear beam model is used to demonstrate the applicability of PST. Numerical simulations are carried out to test the feasibility and to study the general characteristics of this technique without the real measurement and design data. It is found that the PST is not only quite robust in providing accurate results but also an excellent numerical method according to the four practical criteria for evaluating numerical methods.

Notizen: A two-step approach to finite element ordering is introduced. The scheme involves ordering of the finite elements first, based on their adjacency, followed by a local numbering of the nodal variables. The ordering of the elements is performed by the Cuthill-McKee algorithm. This approach takes into consideration the underlying structure of the finite element mesh, and may be regarded as a ‘natural’ finite element ordering scheme. The experimental results show that this two-step scheme is more efficient than the reverse Cuthill-McKee algorithm applied directly to the nodes, in terms of both execution time and the number of fill-in entries, particularly when higher order finite elements are used. In addition to its efficiency, the two-step approach increases modularity and flexibility in finite element programs, and possesses potential application to a number of finite element solution methods.

Notizen: The matrix N(λ) whose elements are functions of a parameter λ is called the λ-matrix. Those values of λ that make the matrix singular are of great interest in many applied fields. An efficient method for those eigenvalues of a λ-matrix is presented. A simple explicit convergence criterion is given, as well as the algorithm and two numerical examples.

Notizen: A new boundary element technique based on Green's formula is applied to the analysis of nonlinear water wave problems. The problems are formulated mathematically as two-dimensional nonlinear initial-boundary value problems in terms of a velocity potential, assuming the fluid to be inviscid and incompressible, and the flow to be irrotational. In the present paper, two kinds of wave-making problems are analysed: (1) a tsunami generated by sea bed elevation; (2) generation, propagation and run-up on a vertical wall of a solitary wave. Numerical results obtained by the present method are compared with available experimental data and analytical solutions. Excellent agreements are obtained.

Notizen: In Reference 1 a series of general formulae for evaluating the total number of non-zero blocks in the stiffness matrix, both of two-dimensional and three-dimensional (arbitrary polygonal/polyhedral) finite element networks, was presented. In this paper, an alternative, more direct and efficient method for deriving such formulae is presented. In addition, this new method can be used for more complex situations. In fact, it may be used for almost all kinds of finite element networks.

Notizen: A technique is developed for the numerical analysis of wave motion in layered strata. Semidiscrete particular solutions satisfying inhomogeneous boundary conditions are calculated by the finite element method. These solutions are combined with semidiscrete modes of an appropriate eigenvalue problem. The boundary conditions corresponding to rigid and rough footings on a layered stratum are treated in detail. Applications are considered which demonstrate the validity of the technique.

Notizen: The nonlinear diffusion equation as applied to two-dimensional time-dependent magnetic fields is solved with a finite element algorithm. This algorithm permits the analysis of problems possessing complex geometries, induced eddy currents, permanent magnets, and nonperiodic excitation currents. The numerical procedure utilizes implicit time stepping with an iterative scheme to solve the resulting set of equations. Two examples of applications of this program are presented.

Notizen: This paper describes a new contouring algorithm for isoparametric elements which can be used to map three-dimensional scalar fields. The contours are generated on arbitrary planes intersecting finite element structures. Tracing element contour lines is accomplished by an accurate predictor-corrector technique. A method of finding starting points for the algorithm on the boundary of the elements is also given.

Notizen: Finite element models for linear elastic plane stress problems which provide, alternatively, a completely compatible displacement field or a precisely equilibrated stress field are developed. The basis for both models is a biquintic interpolation polynomial representing Airy's stress function over a triangular region. The polynomial coefficients are modified and grouped to establish compatibility while retaining equilibrium within each element. Nodal kinematic parameters are selected and matched to the stress function for the compatible (modified stiffness) model, while nodal stress function parameters are chosen for the equilibrium (modified flexibility) model. Constraints on the global freedoms, enforced by Lagrange multipliers, are introduced to augment nodal connectivity in establishing interelement compatibility in the ‘stiffness’ model and uniform stress transmission in the ‘flexibility’ model. Appropriate boundary conditions are formed for each model. Numerical solutions are obtained and assessed.

Notizen: Earlier formulations of the finite element approach to cylindrical (rz) field problems led initially to variational expressions containing a simple term in 1/r and consequent attempts to remove it by appropriate choice of interpolation functions. The present paper uses new interpolation functions which ensure that the field behaviour near the axis is correctly modelled. High-order finite elements up to order four are derived and tested on a special cylindrical geometry to confirm, in a practical case, the theoretical claims of improved rates of convergence in solving problems of engineering significance.

Notizen: An improved bisection strategy is presented to determine the eigenvalues of a real symmetric tridiagonal matrix which occurs in a simple column buckling problem. The new strategy, which involves only a minor modification, utilizes incomplete Sturm sequences only as long as relevant information on the next and following eigenvalues is obtained resulting in a minimization of the computational work. The strategy is particularly effective if only a few eigenvalues are required. The technique can be used for a wider class of eigenvalue problems than the illustrative one presented here.

Notizen: A general method is presented for the isothermal mechanical analysis of incompressible material solids in which a small-amplitude time harmonic oscillation is superposed on a static finite deformation field. Material behaviour is assumed to be of the ‘fading memory’ type describable by the finite linear viscoelasticity theory of Coleman and Noll.4 Existing finite element codes, that treat finite elasticity material behaviour, can be extended with minor modifications to treat the subject problem. A specialized form of the finite linear viscoelasticity constitutive equations proposed by Morman8 has been implemented in the MARC nonlinear finite element program for predicting the response of statically deformed elastomeric components to small amplitude vibrations. Numerical results obtained with MARC for the static force-deflection behaviour and dynamic (complex) stiffness for a viscoelastic cylinder subject to combined axial and twisting pre-loads, are in excellent agreement with corresponding analytical results.

Notizen: An automatic algorithm is presented for reducing the bandwidth of symmetric interconnectivity matrices. The technique takes an arbitrary input scheme and reorders the nodes so as to reduce the bandwidth. Notizen: A new method for solving structural dynamics problems has been proposed by the author in a separate paper.1 This method of solution produces a high order real symmetric eigenvalue problem of the form (A - λ B - λ2C - λ3D…)U = 0. An algorithm for solving such an eigenvalue problem using simultaneous iteration is presented in this paper. Methods of accelerating the convergence and reducing the amount of computation are also described. A numerical example is given in which the algorithm is used to calculate the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a framed structure.

Notizen: A boundary element method for the solution of problems of elastic and elasto-plastic torsion of solids of revolution is proposed. The displacement and stress field produced by a circumferential ring load in an infinite elastic body are derived and used as the fundamental solution to establish the governing integral equations. For the elasto-plastic case, linear boundary elements and bilinear quadrilateral internal cells are used for discretization of these equations. In order to carry out Gaussian integrations along boundary elements and over internal cells, a method ensuring sufficient accuracy for the calculation of singular integrals is proposed. Numerical results for several problems are given.

Notizen: The dynamic analysis of structures by the standard finite element method introduces additional inaccuracies into the solution which are not present when the method is used for static analyses. These inaccuracies can arise from two sources: (i) the element formulation and (ii) the reduction of the size of the matrices by a static condensation (i.e. using the Guyan method1,2). The errors in both cases are caused by neglecting frequency-dependent terms in the functions relating the displacements at any point in the structure to the displacements at certain fixed points (i.e. nodes in the element formulation and ‘masters’ in the condensation). A new method of solution is proposed in this paper in which the frequency-dependent terms are retained implicitly by using dynamic stiffness matrices defined at a number of fixed frequencies. The dynamic stiffness matrices may be condensed efficiently to a relatively small number of master degrees-of-freedom using a front solution algorithm. The final stage in the solution uses these matrices to synthesize a high-order eigenvalue problem. A method of solving such an eigenvalue problem, of arbitrary order, is described in a separate paper.3 Numerical examples are given to show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method compared with conventional methods of solution.

Notizen: This paper describes an element reordering algorithm which is suitable for use with a frontal solution package. The procedure is shown to generate efficient element numberings for a wide variety of test examples. In an effort to obtain an optimum elimination order, the algorithm first renumbers the nodes, and then uses this result to resequence the elements. This intermediate step is necessary because of the nature of the frontal solution procedure, which assembles variables on an element-by-element basis but eliminates them node by node. To renumber the nodes, a modified version of the King1 algorithm is used. In order to minimize the number of nodal numbering schemes that need to be considered, the starting nodes are selected automatically by using some concepts from graph theory. Once the optimum numbering sequence has been ascertained, the elements are then reordered in an ascending sequence of their lowest-numbered nodes. This ensures that the new elimination order is preserved as closely as possible. For meshes that are composed of a single type of high-order element, it is only necessary to consider the vertex nodes in the renumbering process. This follows from the fact that mesh numberings which are optimal for low-order elements are also optimal for high-order elements. Significant economies in the reordering strategy may thus be achieved. A computer implementation of the algorithm, written in FORTRAN IV, is given.

Notizen: A general approach for using infinite elements within the context of the finite element method is presented. Based upon Gauss-Laguerre quadrature, a scheme for numerically computing the infinite element characteristic matrices is proposed. The general formulation of the element shape functions is outlined, including that for infinite elements that model the far field of hyperbolic systems. The technique is illustrated with a classical example in elasticity: a vertically loaded circular rigid plate.

Notizen: A general expression for finite difference approximations for all derivatives up to the (N - 1)th order on a finite difference mesh with N-nodes is established. The mesh may be non-uniform and the derivative evaluated at any of the N-nodes. An estimate for the truncation error is obtained and shown to depend on the nonlinearity of the mesh as well as on the mesh diameter. Specific formulae for first- and second-order derivatives are given as examples.

Notizen: This paper shows that the ‘streamline upwinding’ proposed by Hughes and Brooks1 is particularly simple to implement with the coupled nonlinear equations of the problem of salt water intrusion in a coastal aquifer. Because the mechanical dispersion effect is far larger than the molecular diffusion, the notorious spurious oscillations can be controlled by limiting the ratio of grid size to the streamline mixing length. The method is demonstrated on an example of a typical aquifer by giving the diagnostic variation of concentration and various salt profiles for different values of the key parameter.

Notizen: An analysis is presented for the stability of an initial and boundary value difference scheme arising from the solution of a two-dimensional hyperbolic equation by the Lax-Wendroff method. The positive and negative characteristic speeds of the linear equation are not necessarily equal in magnitude. Supplementary boundary conditions required for the finite difference solution are obtained using extrapolation for a linear combination of the dependent variables. The analysis produces stability intervals for the parameter which describes this linear combination of variables. Numerical experiments are described which support the theoretical analysis.

Notizen: The authors' aim was the development of a suitable procedure for the structural design of railway vehicles within an existing general purpose finite element package. A previous application to railway vehicles was based on the use of a sequence of linear programming steps incorporating move limits on the design variables. This approach was slow and in other fields mathematical programming techniques tended to give way to methods based on optimality criteria.Nevertheless because of its simplicity of concept, and because some apparently successful alternatives to the move limit idea were available, the use of linear programming was returned to and the method is now incorporated in the British Rail finite element program NEWPAC. Couched in terms of inverse variables and using linearized forms of the stress constraints, the linear programming approach converges with the optimality criteria method. Details of the implementation and of some standard examples are given.

Notizen: A family of high-order, conforming triangles for the finite element analysis of plate bending problems is developed, using the displacement method of formulation. The development proceeds in two steps. A family of non-conforming triangles, based on polynomial expansions of order 〉4 is first generated, and its performance found to be unacceptable. Nodal variables for the non-conforming family are selected from the set w, wx, wy, wn. The elements are then made to conform, by adding a twist nodal variable wnt at the mid-side nodes. Rational functions define the three additional degrees-of-freedom. Simple and very accurate procedures solve the problems associated with the use of such functions.Numerical results are presented for the conforming triangles of order 4 and 7, following a brief description of the two elements. A listing of the explicit shape functions for the quartic triangle is included. The numerical results are very good. In particular, they are superior per degree-of-freedom to the results predicted by the various non-conforming and conforming, cubic and related elements at present used in computer packages. Together with a similar performance by the quintic member10 of the family, they validate the proposed theoretical solution.

Notizen: This paper describes a method for introducing line searches into the arc-length solution procedure. Such line searches may be used at each iteration to calculate an optimum scalar step-length which scales the normal iterative vector. In practice, a loose tolerance is provided so that on many iterations the line searches are avoided. However on ‘difficult iterations’, the line searches are shown to lead to a substantial improvement in the convergence characteristics. A simple single-parameter acceleration is also developed using line search concepts. The new arc-length method is applied to both the geometrically nonlinear analysis of shallow shells and the materially nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete beams and slabs. Significant improvements are demonstrated in relation to the standard arc-length method.

Notizen: This paper presents boundary integral equation procedures for calculating the added mass matrix required to determine hydroelastic vibrational modes of tanks or immersed structures. The liquid is assumed inviscid and incompressible and no surface waves are admitted. Two symmetric variational formulations of the boundary integral equation are derived, including the free surface condition and possible conditions of symmetry. These are approximated by a curved finite element method and numerical results are presented for an axisymmetric tank, immersed cantilever plates and a three-dimensional fuel storage container.

Notizen: This convergence criterion is proved for any ‘legalizable’ finite element formulation, i.e. any model for which a conforming displacement version is possible, using the same nodal variables. Engineers may therefore take control of (and responsibility for) convergence, for most of the elements in service today. Stummel's counter-example is explained as a technical misunderstanding, due to inadequate documentation of the patch test. It is suggested, without proof, that the test (properly applied) is universal, provided that it is always combined with an adequate test of stability.

Notizen: A recursive, shape controlling triangulation method is described. The method is designed to produce a labelling which implies reduced fill in the solution of (finite element) equations assembled from such a triangulation and allows simple implementation of a nested disection algorithm for irregular domains. This approach saves a substantial amount of time usually spent on discovering a suitable relabelling of the triangulation. In addition, the matrix of the resulting system is then endowed with a recursive doubly bordered block diagonal form. This allows us to develop a recursive parallel bisection method for the solution of the system of equations.

Notizen: The design of nuclear facilities requires dynamic analysis to evaluate their performance during an earthquake. In modal analysis, a method recommended for dynamic analysis by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure are commonly calculated using a stiffness matrix computed using the finite element method.A primary goal of this study was to design a finite element mesh, capable of modelling a reactor structure, with a minimum number of nodes and elements. This is necessary since analysis using a mesh fine enough to include all of the structural elements is not feasible because of exorbitant computer time and storage requirements. It was found that for lateral motion, a representative reactor structure could be accurately modelled using a simplified mesh with only one isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral element per floor. In this mesh essentially infinite springs must be placed between the masses at each floor level to prevent internal movements of the lumped masses within the quadratic quadrilateral elements. It was also found that a structure with rigid heavy bottom floors and a light top floor can be subjected to large displacements in the top floor during earthquakes. It was concluded that the properties of that light top floor (especially shear area) controls the value of the fundamental frequency of the building.

Notizen: This paper addresses the problem of thermo-elastic deflection in beams using a two-dimensional finite elemement idealization of the cross-section. Bending effects are introduced in a gerneralized plane strain formulation assuming that constant curvature dominates the flexural deformation. The method leads to a plane strain calculation which is very interesting from the computational point of view; thermal deendence of the physical properties can be taken into account, which would be inconceivable in a three-dimensional problem.

Notizen: A numerical technique is developed using an implicit time-marching scheme to study the deformation history of steel building frames in fire, by considering the change in the material properties due to rise of temperature, effect of creep and large deformations. A computer program has been developed for the analysis of plane frames based on the above algorithm using incremental and iterative procedures. Based on such a study, the length of time for which the structure can perform its function without either local or overall failure can be predicted.

Notizen: The Petrov-Galerkin method is applied to transient convective diffusion problems with convection dominance. Weighting functions are used which differ from the shape functions by both symmetric and non-symmetric modifications. It is proved that the symmetric modifications largely influence the accuracy. By a one-dimensional and a two-dimensional example it is shown how to choose this modification to maximize accuracy.

Notizen: Regardless of their simplicity, all structures have an infinite number of degrees-of-freedom (d.o.f.) when subjected to dynamic loading. The usual finite element method reduces the infinite d.o.f. system to a model with a limited d.o.f. while capturing the significant physical behaviour. The modal analysis reduces the number of d.o.f. further to a limited number of modal co-ordinates. However, accurate results comparable to the original finite element model may not be possible unless higher modes are included. The present paper is to recommend a response analysis which makes use of both the natural modes and the mass and stiffness matrices of the system to improve the convergence with respect to the number of modes. While the effects of lower modes are analysed similar to the modal analysis, the effects of higher modes are included in the system matrices and the information for higher modes is not needed.

Notizen: In this paper the use of strongly stretched finite difference grids is examined in detail for a simple model equation. Numerical solutions of this equation demonstrate the overall second-order accuracy of the difference approximations. The behaviour of two simple iterative methods, S.O.R. and stationary A.D.I. is discussed for several cases with strong grid stretching and with variable diffusion coefficients. The results show that grid compression near to boundaries can greatly enhance the rates of convergence of these iterative methods, whereas with grid compression in the centre the rate of convergence can be extremely slow. The case of a diffusion coefficient which increases away from the boundaries of a region is analogous to grid compression in the centre and again the convergence rates can degrade considerably.

Notizen: A special matrix is introduced, the elements of which are zero or first-order differential operators. This matrix is used to define a boundary value problem which covers a wide class of engineering applications. An equivalent variational formulation is found using an extension of the Gauss theorem. From this variational principle the equations of the elements are derived. The unified formulae presented here can be useful for educational purposes and for the design of a finite element system for total analysis.

Notizen: Correlation is a measure of similarity between two functions. When two functions are exactly similar and equal, the correlation between them is maximum. The correlation concept can be used for system design, e.g. the four-bar mechanism, the slider crank mechanism, etc. The motion generated by four-bar linkage can be expressed as a function of link dimensions, input and output angles. The product of generated function and desired function gives correlation. The best possible design would be when the deviation of actual correlation from its maximum value (i.e. 100 per cent correlation) is least. This concept, in fact, leads to a modified least squares approach and based on this an objective function is formulated and minimized to give link dimensions. The results obtained are better than the least squares technique, and this is illustrated through different numerical examples.

Notizen: The Gauss-Jordan inversion algorithm requires 0(n3) arithmetic operations. In some practical applications, like state estimation or short-circuit calculation in power systems, the given matrix is sparse and only part of the inverse is needed. Most frequently in the diagonal dominant case this is the diagonal. There are two ways to exploit sparsity to determine elements of the inverse: 1Columnwise inversion via the solution of sparse linear systems with columns of the unit matrix as right-hand sides.2Application of the algorithm of Takahashi et al6.The latter algorithm arises very naturally from multiplying the left- and right-hand factors of the Zollenkopf bifactorization in reverse order. We indicate how computing time can be gained in the important symmetric diagonal dominant case if only part of the diagonal is needed and compare computing times of the method of Takahasi et al.6 with several variants of columnwise inversion. Whereas most of the theory holds for general matrices, experiments are performed on the symmetric diagonal dominant case. For band matrices the operation count is 0(n) both for computing a column of the inverse by columnwise inversion and the diagonal by the algorithm of Takahashi et al6.

Notizen: In this work the problem of indentation of a half-space by a spherical rigid indentor is investigated using the finite element method.A system of constitutive equations applicable to elasto-plastic materials subjected to large deformations is used to determine the deformations and stresses for the contact problems. These equations represent the simplest generalization for the large-deformation conditions of the classical theory of plasticity of metals based on the von Mises yield condition and the associated flow rule. The material formulation of the kinematical and dynamical relations will be used. These equations combine the kinematic and the isotropic strain-hardening models. The results obtained from this work are compared with existing solutions for this problem that are confined to small strains and elastic, ideal-plastic materials.

Notizen: This is a paper presented in two parts dealing respectively with error analysis and adaptive processes applied to finite element calculations. Part I contains the basic theory and methods of deriving error estimates for second-order problems. Part II of the paper deals with the strategy for adaptive refinement and concentrates again on the p-convergent methods. It is shown that an extremely high rate of convergence is reached in practical problems using such procedures. Applications to realistic stress analysis and potential problems are presented.

Notizen: A test problem is presented which provides a realistic challenge for computational techniques designed for the prediction of temperature distributions in melting/freezing processes. It is shown that a suitably modified finite difference implementation of the enthalpy method produces results that are perhaps adequate for practical purposes. However, the best approach to problems typified by the test problem remains to be found.

Notizen: The conventional staggered solution of pore fluid-soil interaction problems is shown to suffer from stability restriction. This paper presents a stabilized form of the staggered solution procedure of the problem. Computational overhead for this stabilization is shown to be modest and hence this stabilized procedure is recommended for production implementation for pore fluid-soil interaction analysis.

Notizen: Several new finite elements are presented for the idealization of two- and three-dimensional coupled fluid-solid systems subjected to static and dynamic loading. The elements are based on a displacement formulation in terms of the displacement degrees-of-freedom at the nodes of the element. The formulation includes the effects of compressible wave propagation and surface sloshing motion. The use of reduced integration techniques and the introduction of rotational constraints in the formulation of the element stiffness eliminates all unnecessary zero-energy modes. A simple method is given which allows the stability of a finite element mesh of fluid elements to be investigated prior to analysis. Hence, the previously encountered problems of ‘element locking’ and ‘hour glass’ modes have been eliminated and a condition of optimum constraint is obtained.Numerical examples are presented which illustrate the accuracy of the element. It is shown that the element behaves very well for non-rectangular geometry. The optimum constraint condition is clearly illustrated by the static solution of a rigid block floating on a mesh of fluid elements.

Notizen: Formulation of a four-node isoparametric element suitable for modelling cracks in reinforced concrete structures is presented. The standard isoparametric element is known to give spurious shear stresses. The conventional remedy of selective integration breaks down in a ‘cracked’ element. It is shown that the proposed formulation gives superior results as compared to both the standard isoparametric element and the conventional selectively integrated element.

Notizen: A theory for free surface flow using variable geometry finite elements is numerically modelled using isoparametric finite elements, for the first time. The resulting nonlinear equations are solved using the Newton-Raphson method. Because a functional is used as the basis of the formulation, the resulting equations are symmetrical. The realistic problem of flow over a Crump weir is solved for a large range of discharges.

Notizen: This paper demonstrates that the classical inclusion principle is in general not valid for the h-version of the finite element method. Whereas the inclusion principle is valid for second-order systems discretized by the h-version of the finite element method, provided linear interpolation functions are used as admissible functions, the principle is not valid for fourth-order systems. To characterize the computed eigenvalues for fourth-order systems discretized by the h-version of the finite element method, this paper formulates two bracketing theorems.

Notizen: The virtual crack extension method (VCE) is a very effective tool with finite elements for the accurate evaluation of stress intensity factors in two- or three-dimensional structures. The method utilizes the concept of extending any node on the crack profile in any required direction and by any required amount. A new facility stores a relevant substructure of crack tip stiffnesses so that any number of restarts, each with a new set of extensions, can be performed. Different nodes around three-dimensional crack profiles can be considered, either at vertex or midside node positions. The extension of the vertex nodes, in particular, also involves moving adjacent midside nodes along the profile, and different ways of effecting this, together with the calculation of the relevant area change, have been introduced and are described along with illustrative examples.

Notizen: Based on the Hellinger-Reissner principle and the deformation energy due to assumed stresses and displacements, the problem of the kinematic deformation modes in assumed stress hybrid/mixed finite elements has been examined. Basic schemes are developed for the choice of assumed stress terms that will suppress all kinematic deformation modes. Quadrilateral membrane and axisymmetric elements, and three-dimensional hexahedral elements, are used to illustrate the suggested procedure.

Notizen: A multiple-parameter reduced basis technique and a problem-adaptive computational algorithm are presented for the bifurcation and post-buckling analyses of composite plates subjected to combined loadings. The computational algorithm can be conveniently divided into three distinct stages. The first stage is that of determining the stability boundary. The plate is discretized by using displacement finite element models and the analysis region is reduced by exploiting the special symmetries exhibited by the response of the plate. The vector of unknown nodal displacements is expressed as a linear combination of a small number of path derivatives (derivatives of the nodal displacements with respect to path parameters), and a Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to approximate the finite element equations by a small system of algebraic equations. The reduced equations are used to determine the stability boundary of the plate. In the second stage, a nonllnear solution in the vicinity of the stability boundary is obtained by using a bifurcation buckling mode as a predictor, and a set of reduced equations is generated. In the third stage, the reduced equations are used to trace post-buckling paths corresponding to various combinations of the load parameters. The potential of the proposed approach is discussed and its effectiveness is demonstrated by means of a numerical example of laminated composite plate subjected to combined compressive and shear loadings.

Notizen: In transient analysis it is generally thought that small time steps can only improve the accuracy, because standard stability theorems limit the maximum time step for a given mesh size. In finite element approximations, however, small time steps may cause stability problems which lead to physically unreasonable results. It is shown that this is due to the violation of a discrete maximum principle. The influence of lumped and consistent mass matrices on a stable discretization of time and space is presented.

Notizen: A triangular cylindrical shell element based on discrete Kirchhoff theory is developed. It is a three-node, 27-degrees-of-freedom element using cubic polynomials for the tangential and normal displacement interpolations. The normal rotations are independently interpolated by quadratic polynomials. The formulation is capable of modelling general anisotropy representative of multi-layered, multi-directionally oriented composite construction. The numerical results indicate that the solution for displacements and stresses of cylindrical shells converge monotonically and rapidly to those based on deep shell theory.
