Notizen: Smoke-obscuration of monochromatic (0.632μm) light helium-neon lasers and of broad-band continuum light a hot tungsten filament is reported. The effect of forward-scattered light is evaluated for the monochromatic source, and the degree to which the Bouguer law is obeyed for a non-monochromatic source is discussed. Practical experience with both small-scall and fire experiments is described.

Notizen: A review is presented of the gaseous combustion and pyrolysis products evolved from coal, wood and PVC. Information has been collated on the range of products evolved, the temperatures of evolution and the effect of different ambient conditions (e.g. oxidizing of inert conditions). The data for coal have been subdivided into those from which rates of gas evolution have been or can be derived and those from which this is not possible. Probable decomposition routes for PVC and for wood are discussed. Although all three materials have been widely studied, the correlation between the work of different authors in not always good. The data obtained are dependent on the form of the experiment, and there are gaps in the information available, especially information on the rates of evolution of products of products as a function of temperature.

Notizen: The performance of zine oxide gas large-scale experiments in an experimental underground mine roadway has been investigated. The sensors were in a simple prototype instrument and the response to products evolved from heated coal wood and PVC conveyor belt was determined. The response was measured as a function of sensor distancef from the combustion products, the ventilation rate in the roadway and the mass of coal dust used. Limited analuysis of the roadway air was also carried out. The results are compared with those obtained in laboratory studies1 and suggest that the sensors respond mainly to inorganic gases, e.g. CO, H2, H2S, HCl, and in the case of wood, acetic vapour at concentrations of about 1ppm. The experiments confirm the potential of the sensors as a means of detecting heating involving coal, wood and PVC conveyor belt.

Notizen: An analysis, using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-linked mass spectroscopy, of the major products evolved as a function of temperature from coal, wood and PVC conveyor belting is described. The effect of these products, both collectively and as individual species, on the electrical properties of zinc oxide gas sensors has been investigated: the conductance of the sensors was measured in air containing either the total products evolved from the heated materials or the individual products eluted from a gas chromatographic column. Thus, the products from the different materials which make up the total zinc oxide gas sensor response at different material temperatures were identified. For coal dust heated in air the sensors responded to aromatic hydrocarbons H2 and CO, which were evolved between 100° and 200°C. For coal heated in nitrogen the sensors responded to the aromatic hydrocarbons evolved between 100° and 170°C. For PVC conveyor belt heated in air, the low temperature response was to the low levels of HCl evolved below 200°C. Finally, for hardwood dust heated in air the sensors responded primarily to the acid vapour evolved between 170° and 200°C.

Notizen: The feasibility of oxygen-consumption calorimetry to testing of non-combustibility of building materials is studied. The reasons for the ambiguities of the traditional test method are qualitatively discussed. The construction of the gas collecting system added to the conventional test apparatus is described and the necessary formulae for calculating the oxygen consumption and the simultaneously measured conventional test variables are compared. The results clearly suggest that oxygen-consumption calorimetry is a consistent and powerful method for determining the non-combustibility of building materials.

Notizen: Experimental thermal conditions conducive to the production of high levels of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) from flexible polyurethane foam were determined. In these experiments the material was exposed to relatively low-temperature non-flaming oxidative conditions for a short time period, during which a char was formed. Further heating of the char to temperature above 500°C generated the increased HCN levels. Upon exposure to this same two-step decomposition process, a fire-retarded flexible polyurethane foam produced twice as much char and twice as much HCN. Elemental analyses indicated that the HCN concentration was directly related to the amount of char formed and its nitrogen content. Room burns of slabs of flexible polyurethane foam and chairs containing flexible polyurethane foam indicated that this same phenomenon occurs in large-scale experiments. In these NBS tests, increased concentrations of HCN were produced when the material underwent flaming combustion following a period of smoldering, presumably from heating the char that was formed during smoldering. Investigation of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the increased HCN concentrations was attempted using ion chromatography, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), pyrolysis/mass spectrometry and 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. While the molecular structures of the nitrogen-containing compounds in the char were not elucidated, these analyses provided evidence of multiple compounds containing amine, amide, imine and nitrile functional groups as the most likely sources of the observed HCN.

Notizen: The study of char residues after thermal degradation of synthetic polymers, especially the identification of their morphology, structure and chemical composition is presented in this paper. Special attention was focused on the polystyrene, PVC and polyamide char residues. By means of microscopy in reflected light and reflected polarized light the manifestations of optical anisotropy were observed. X-ray analysis was used for the examination of the microstructure of PVC char residues carbonized at temperatures above 1000°C. For PVC char residues the electric resistivity was determined. The results have proved the close connection between the structure and properties of char residues and the intensity and course of thermal degradation of polymers.

Notizen: The International Conference Interflam'85 was held at the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK, on 26-8 March 1985. This third conference in the Interflam series was set up with the specific aim to bring together the 1985 state of the art of fire science and to show particularly how this information can be put to practical use in the saving of lives. Over 45 speakers, each specialists in their own field of work, some 15 different countries contributed papers. Dr Peter Allender, formerly of Metro-Cammell and now with John Allen Associates, has seen the Conference both from the lecturing platform and from the audience. He has been invited to give his views about Interflam'85.

Notizen: The use of differential thermal analysis has enabled spontaneous ignition behaviour of cotton cellulose to be investigate. The temperature. Ti, at which the onset of spontaneous ignition occurs is recorded as a function of the oxygen concentration of the flowing oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere to which the cellulose sample is exposed in the DTA furnace, when heated at a defined heating rate. The dependence of Ti, on heating rate has enabled the activation energy, Ep, of the rate-determining flammable pyrolysis product reaction to the determined using both a previously derived simple kinetic model and the technique of Ozawa. Ep, increases from a lower limiting value of 112 kJ mol-1 at zero oxygen concentration to an asymptote value of 169 kJ mol-1 at oxygen volume concentrations above 30%. This effect is described in terms of oxygen catalysis of competing pyrolysis routes. At a given heating rate, increased oxygen concentration reduces Ti. A plot of 1/Ti versus In [O2] gives two liner regions which intersect at an oxygen concentration of about 20%, suggesting that two combustion mechanisms exist, one above and the other below this value. Below this concentration, which is similar to the conventional limiting oxygen for cellulose, significant char remains, suggesting that ignition of gaseous products only occurs. If the difference in slopes is sttributed to the variations in Ep with oxygen concentration, then a value for the activation energy of gaseous product oxidation, Eox = 215 kJ mol-1 is derived.

Notizen: Traditional material-flammability tests are discussed in terms of their empirical foundation and oversimplified interpretation of fire phenomena. More recent rate of heat-release tests overcome some of these problems by measuring a material's response to different levels of fire exposure. However, no existing small-scale tests are sensitive to the radiant emission from the material's own flames. This radiant emission controls large-scale fire hazards. As a result, existing flammability tests canot be xpected to adequately characterize large-scale hazards. Some new approaches to this problem are discussed and a specific bench-scale test method is suggested which may overcome the identified problems of existing test methods.

Notizen: The Harvard Computer Fire Code Mark V has been used to simulate full-scale furniture fires. Simulations were run with one sofa burning in the open and another burning in a small room. To obtain better agreement between experiment and simulation, changes were made in the code to include heating of the lower surfaces in the room. A simulation of a mattress test, conducted at NBS, is included. Comparison with a zone model using a different plume equation is also presented.

Notizen: No standard method has been developed for measureing the evolution of specific toxic gases from building lings when involved in fire. The British Fire Propagation test (BS 476 Part 6) operated in an instrumented room has been proposed for this purpose previously but has not found general acceptance. It is considered further in this report, which investigates the movement and measurement of smoke and specific fire gases under different conditions of room stirring and the effect of the latter on fire propagation indexes. Stiring has been found to have no statistically significant effect on fire propagation indexes provided that the effects of this on calibration of the apparatus are taken into account. Stirring also had little effect upon smoke production per se. Under unstire conditions smoke and toxic gases stratify in the same layer early in the test, and measurement of their production at any single room location will be subject to the location, the way the room influences stratification and how the room is instrumentee, as well as by the prpduct performance. Under stirred room conditions smoke and toxic gases are evenly distributed and product performance can be assessed more simply from concurrent measurements of fire, smoke and toxic gas parameters. The latter procedure is proposed for obtaining relative data on building linings and for examination in further studies for correlation to room and corridor burns.

Notizen: Extension of the British Standard Fire Propagation test (BS 476 Part 6) as a combustion mode for measuring smoke and toxic gas production from small panels of UPVC building products has been investigated. Hydrogen chloride gas concenatrations in the test room have been measured continuously with a method developed to ensure high collection efficiency from the fire gases. Using this method, the influences of test conditions (room temperature and humidity, room surface finish, reactivity of fire box interior) on HCl gas concentrations were examined to explain the fate of HCl gas after its evolution. The relative humidity (RH) in the room was the most critical factor influencing HCl gas concentrations during tests. Although HCl evolution early in the test was influenced little by RH and closely matched smoke production, maximum HCl gas concentrations in the room attained later varied markedly with RH. Generally, no more than one-third of the HCl expected theoretically remained airborne under any test condition. Further investigations suggested that this loss and the effect of RH are associated with HCl plate-out on room surfaces. Using test conditions set to minimize the influence of RH, HCl evolution from a series of UPVC building products was investigated. HCl concentrations in the test room did not exceed incapacitating levels for those products where less than a certain quantity of UPVC was combusted. This observation is discussed in relation to French regulations, which limit the total quantity of chlorine in some synthetic materials within building compartments.

Notizen: A range of basic fillers has been incorporated into UPVC formulations and assessed for effectiveness in suppressing HCl evolution and influence on other fire properties. Investigations were carried out with the British Fire Propagation test (BS 476 Part 6) in a room previously used for assessing the fire behaviour of UPVC building products. HCl evolution was also studied following degradation in a pyrolysis tube furnace. Despite notable differences in these methods of assessment, good correlation was found between them. Varying degrees of HCl suppression were obtained and for formulations containing stronger bases effectiveness was found between them. Varying degrees of HCl suppression were obtained and for formulations containing stronger bases effectiveness was approximately stoichiometric to the amount of base present. Lithium hydroxide was thus the most effective HCl absorber on a weight basis. A formulation with 40 parts per hundred resin of this filler evolved only 2% of its theoretical HCl, although at the expense of increased fire propagation indexes. Smoke properties were not greatly influenced by the formulations. Precipitated calcite was considered the most promising acid-absorbing filler for practical use. At 40 parts per hundred resin it reduced HCl evolution to 34% of theoretical and markedly delayed the onset of incapacitating HCl concentrations in the room, with little influence on fire propagation properties of the UPVC.

Notizen: A method is presented for evaluating the toxic hazard resulting from the thermal decomposition of materials used in buildings or other closed structures. It was developed in conjunction with the current revision of Israel Standards pertaining to the behavior in fire of building materials. The method is based on the measurement and evaluation of those gases recognized as hazardous in fire situations. A ‘toxicity ratio’ of the materials is defined in terms of the sum of concentration ratios of all toxic gases monitored to the corresponding lethal threshold limit concentration levels. The ‘toxicity index’, a material property, relates the toxicity ration to the material quantity and the plenum volume. The toxicity index is found by experiment for specimens heated to their smoldering and flaming temperatures in a closed system. Fire hazard levels due to toxic gases emitted from different materials can then be compared using the toxicity ratio computed for the specified situation. The proposed method is compatible with Israel Standards IS 921, where allowable levels for buildings and compartments are defined.

Notizen: Previous work on the emission of smoke and fumes from overheated aircraft interior materials has included simple monitoring of acids and alkalies by means of a glass electrode in a water-bubbler. In order to put these measurements on a quantitative basis and as part of an attempt to assess the significance of acidic or alkaline fumes in terms of irritant effects, a two-way pH-stat automatic titration apparatus is now used. A small sample of material is heated at a controlled rate to 500°C in a stream of flowing air. The effluent is bubbled through water and automatically titrated for acids or alkalies. The temperatures at which these emissions occur and their amounts can be measured. Good recoveries of acids, alkalies and of both evolved consecutively have been achieved. To assess the utility of the apparatus for actual materials, the acid evolved from various types of PVC was compared. The emissions from three different nylons and from a composite cable were also investigated. Reference materials with various known additives are now being examined by the method and comparisons with irritancy measurements are being made. Ion-chromatography will be used to study the individual acid evolved.

Notizen: The load-bearing capacity and deformation response of structural members in fire are mainly influenced by non-steady temperature distributions in heated bodies. The determination of the temperature fields in these members is therefore the primary assumption for the further computational treatment of fire problems. In this study a new practical calculation method is presented by which the determination of the temperature fields in solid bodies in the case of non-steady heating becomes easy, and even a simple calculator can solve the problem with sufficient accuracy for practical use. The calculation method is based on the principles of conformal transformations from applied mathematics whereby the Gauss error law is used for the description of unidimensional temperature fields. The efficiency of the method is shown by means of an example.

Notizen: The Center for Fire Research Fire (Toxic) Hazard-Assessment computer model was used to evaluate the potential for hazard reduction by the modification of the combustion properties of upholstered furniture items in a residential occupancy. The potential benefits of these modifications are compared with the effects of variations in room size and construction to determine if they would be realized across a range of housing sizes and types. The results demonstrate the greatest benefit by the reduction of the mass loss (burning) rate of the item regardless of room size and even if the means used to reduce the burning rate results in an increase in smoke production and material toxicity. These results are intended as an indicator of potentially beneficial directions for further research and should not be taken as conclusive evidence of fact without experimental verification.

Notizen: Smoke and toxic gases (STG) are the main cause of fire deaths. They combine to make escape difficult and to retard rescue work and fire-fighting. The paper reviews advances in the characterization of the STG hazard, and discusses improved materials of construction to meet the new, more stringent safety criteria used by responsible architects and design engineers. Because of the wide choice of safer materials now available at reasonable cost in a number of product areas such as furniture foams and cable insulation, the time is approaching when such materials can be introduced without harming the economics of these industries. Indeed, a convincing demonstration of intrinsic safety could without harming the economics of these industries. Indeed, a convincing demonstration of intrinsic safety could encourage the introduction of improved plastics and other organic materials into a wide range of market applications.

Notizen: An intumescnt material has been developed, based on alkali silicates, which can be used in fire protection in the form of sheets or boards which can be joined to various materials, ranging from wood and wood products to metal. The swelling of the material on heating to over 100°C or on contact with a flame is due to and endothermic process and is associated with the emission of water vapour. The solid foam formed is rigid and consists of hydrated silica. The phenomena observed during the preparation of the boards and their behaviour on heating can be explained in terms of silicate chemistry.

Notizen: Three test methods for measuring the rate of heat release, RHR, have been compared on the same building materials. The test methods are the OSU-box modified for O2-consumption, the STFI open arrangement and the NBS cone calorimeter. All methods are based on the oxygen-consumption technique. Radiation intensities up to 50 k Wm-2 have been applied. Thirteen different materials were tested. The results obtained using the three methods seem to be quite similar in spite of the different equipment used. The minor deviations observed in the results seem to be systematic and may be due to the different testing arrangements. There is a good correlation between results, e.g. total heat release up to 1min after ignition, obtained by the different methods. Additional information about the time to ignition is obtained simultaneously. Heat-release rates in the vertical and horizontal orientations are also compared in the NBS cone calorimeter.

Notizen: A technique for estimating fire-buildup in rooms with combustible interior finish is discussed. Use of the technique resulted in good agreement between fires conducted in one-quarter-scale rooms with a doorway opening and those performed in full-scale rooms. The effects of burner location and heating rate on flashover in a well-insulated room were also studied to help select a suitable ignition source size and placement for testing of interior-finish materials.

Notizen: On the basis of the two-dimensional theory of elasticity, the theoretical analysis of a vertical, fluid-filled crack intersecting and oblique joint has been made for the extraction of geothermal heat from hot, dry rock masses, where the opening of the joint near a point of intersection and the frictional resistance against slips along the joint are taken into account. The stress intensity factors are evaluated for discussing crack kinking at the upper joint tip, and the sufficient conditions on theinclination of the joint and on the length between the upper joint tip and the point of intersection are obtained for keeping a fluid-filled crack stable just beneath a joint. It is also shown that the volume of the stable reservoir created by using a joint is much larger than that of a fluidfilled crack in a jointless rock mass, even if the joint is oblique and is opened up by the fluid pressure.

Notizen: The plate loading test is performed in order to determine the deformation modulus of a rock mass in situ. In the standard execution of this test the loading is applied perpendicular to the rock surface. The displacements are measured on the axis of symmetry, since for an isotropic material with linear deformation characteristics exact formulae are known which are valid at this location. For horizontal strata this presents no problem as it is easy to provide loading in a vertical direction. When the rock strata are dipping it is imprectical to use nonvertical load and it is then necessary to calculate the modulus from the displacements in a non-axisymmetrical arrangement. Using the well-known method of the Taylor series approximate formulae are derved which are sufficiently accurate for all practical cases of sloping rock.

Notizen: In this paper, a general variational principle for the initial boundary value problem of quasi-static thermoelastic consolidation is developed by assuming infinitesimal deformation and an incompressible fluid flowing through a linearly elastic solid. By manipulating the coupling operators, an extended form of the variational pronciple is derved. The associated finite element formulation based on this principle is presented and numerical applications for plane strain thermo-elastic consolidation are revealed.

Notizen: In this paper the settlement of a rigid foundation supported by a layer of clay which has been stabilized with stone columns is considered. The results of an analytic solution for the settlement, assuming no yield occurs in the clay or columns, have been presented in a previous publication. This solution is now used to develop an interaction analysis which takes account of yielding within the stone columns. This interaction analysis is based on a number of plausible assumptions regarding the behaviour of the clay and columns. In order to check the validity of these assumptions elasto-plastic finite element analyses have been performed and the agreement between the two methods is very good. However, the computational effort required for the finite element analyses is many orders of magnitude greater than that for the interaction analysis. This analysis has been used to generate a number of parametric solutions which provide a basis for estimating the reduction in settlement of the foundation due to the stabilization of the clay.

Notizen: Stability and bifurcation of plane-strain, undrained, rectilinear deformations on water-saturated granular soil specimens are discussed. The soil, sand or normally consolidated clay, is described by a 2D-flow theory of plasticity for frictional material with non-associated flow rule. Contractant material become unstable (liquefies) at the state of maximum deviatoric stress. For dilatant material the dominant failure mode is shear banding that occurs close to the state of maximum principal effectivestress ratio. The theoretical findings are supported by and are used to explain existing experimental results.

Notizen: The finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) are two well established numerical methods used for the analysis of underground openings. The advantages of both the methods are utilized by adopting FEBEM in which finite elements are coupled with boundary elements. A coupling procedure is presented in this paper. In using FEBEM, the effect of the location of interface boundary between finite element and boundary element regions, effect of Poisson's ratio and effect of stress ratio are discussed. It is shown that Poisson's ratio and stress ratio have significant effect on the accuracy of the results. Different discretization schemes are discussed to study their effect on accuracy and computation time. The use of different material properties in the FE region is presented. A comparative study is made with FEM for all the cases. It is shown that use of FEBEM is more advantageous than FEM.

Notizen: The current work uses Baiocchi's transformation to obtain heuristically a formulation of the inhomogeneous dam problem. When finite element methods are applied the finite dimensional problem is a variational inequality which may be solved to obtain approximate solutions. The main advantage of the method is that it uses a fixed mesh. The finite dimensional problem is solved by means of succesive overrelaxation with projection. Although the standard convergence theory1 for this method does not apply in this case, because the stiffness matrix is not symmetric, satisfactory and rapid convergence was obtained in all of our examples.Numerical results are given for some examples.

The ocean floor soil is treated as a saturated porous elastic medium and Biot's theory is used to formulate the coupled flow and deformation. The waves are treated as a random process which is described by Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum. The derived statistical properties of the response are used to evaluate the probability of failure in ocean bed.

Notizen: This paper examines the torsional response of a rigid pier type foundation, with a non-uniform or hollow cross-section which is embedded in bonded contact with a layered elastic half space. The tractions which act at the axisymmetric boundary surface between the pier and the surrounding elastic medium are represented by discretized regions of uniform traction. The compatibility of deformation at the boundary is used to determine the interface stress distribution. The torque-rotation response for the, rigid pier foundation is obtained for different choices of the pier geometry and shear modulus mistnatch between the layer and the underlying half space.

Notizen: A theoretical model is presented to predict simultaneous transient coupled heat and moisture transfer in partly saturated soils. The formulation is in terms of volumetric moisture content, is two dimensional, includes gravitational flow and takes into account latent heat of vaporization effects. The numerical solution of the problem is accomplished by means of a finite element solution algorithm. Predictions from the numerical model are used to investigate the importance of gravitational flow, for the case of a soil stratum subjected to evaporation losses at the surface. The results achieved show good qualitative agreement with expected behaviour.

Notizen: The calculus of variations is an attractive tool for the determination of critical slip surfaces, but there are unresoived difficulties in its application to plane strain problems. Here we consider the simpler problem of rectilinear flow under gravity or other constant body force. In particular we investigate the stability of an infinitely long slope of finite width for material with cohesion and internal friction. From a variational formulation, the differential equation of the critical slip surface is formulated. An explict solution of this equation is obtained, and hence we determine the critical slope angle in terms of the width of the slope and the material properties. The results are compared with those of an earlier limit analysis treatment.

Notizen: When soils are considered as elastoplastic materials the elastic moduli are much higher than the plastic one(s). However the amount of elastic strain cannot be disregarded as it appears when undrained loading occurs. Based on experimental or theoretical observations, a number of elastic models with stress dependent moduli have been proposed. Attention is focused here on the consequences of this stress dependency on the recoverability of strain and work done after a closed stress path. A necessary and sufficient condition for an elastic material to be hyperelastic is given and the way to obtain practical solutions is shown on examples. The study is restricted to isotropic material undergoing small strains.

Notizen: In the first part of this paper solutions are developed for the response of a non-homogeneous half-space subjected to either a surface point load or a surface line load. The non-homogeneity considered is a variation in Young's modulus (E) with depth (z) which takes the form E=mEZα where mE is a constant and α is referred to as the non-homogeneity parameter. The variation of these solutions as the non-homogeneity parameter α varies between the limits of zero (homogeneous soil) to unity (Gibson soil) gives some fresh insight into both these limiting cases.

Notizen: A quasi-explicit modification of well-known two time level implicit schemes for first-order, non-linear initial value problems is presented. Stable and accurate quadratic families for the quasi-explicit generalized trapezoidal method (GTM) and the generalized midpoint method (GMM) are derived. Accuracy, stability and oscillatory behaviour of the proposed algorithms are studied. Much higher stability and oscillatory levels are obtained for quasi-explicit modification of the generalized trapezoidal method than those of the generalized midpoint method.

Notizen: This paper explains a novel ‘back-analysis’ shceme to determine rock mass behaviour modes from an array of deformational measurements. The input will be the locations of data points and the set of measured displacements, as well as description of the locations and orientations of planes of discontinuity, and the blocks they determine. The output, drawn by the computer, will be the set of block displacements, rotations, and strains that determine the behavioural mode of the mass.

Notizen: A computational procedure is developed for solving the problem of a circular hydraulic fracture propagating under the action of frac-0fluid being pumped in at a central wellbore. The crack is modelled as continuous distributions of ring dislocations and the resulting elasticity singular integral equation is solved numerically. The fluid flow equations are approximated by local and global interpolation finite difference schemes. The coupling between elasticity and fluid flow is handled numerically, by, two different algorithms: one iterates on crack tip velocity whereas the other varies the time step size until it agrees with the chosen increment in crack length. Sample results are given; it is found that the velocity algorithm is computationally more, efficient and more stable. The model allows detailed tracing of pressure distribution and fluid flow in the fracture, even under complex conditions of cyclic injection and fluid rheology. It may serve as a stand-alone model of (horizontal) hydrafracs-especially at shallow depths-or it may be used as a reference frame to test the various numerical formulation/algorithms required for the ongoing development of a fully 3-D hydrafrac simulator.

Notizen: A one-dimensional wave propagation method for earthquake response analysis of horizontally-layered sites of infinite lateral extent is adapted to account for the finite cross-sectional dimensions of an embankment dam overlying a foundation deposit which may be considered infinite in its lateral extent. The procedure is used to study the response of an existing embankment dam for an actual earthquake record. A two-dimensional dynamic finite element analysis is also performed for this case. The records of ground acceleration at an outcropping base rock and at the crest of the dam are available for the site. The comparisons of computed and observed responses support the modified use of the simple numerical procedure.

Notizen: When a heat source such as a canister of radioactive waste is buried in a saturated soil the temperature changes that occur will cause the pore water to expand a greater amount than the voids of the soil. The temperature change will thus usually be accompanied by an increase in pore pressure. If the soil is sufficiently permeable these pore pressures will dissipate. This paper develops an analytic solution for the fundamental problem of a point heat source buried deep in a saturated soil.

Notizen: A 3-D mathematical approach to slope stability, which is based on limiting equilibrium and variational analysis, is presented. In the initial formulation there are three unknown functions: the slip surface, the normal stress and the shear stress direction over this surface. The minimum factor of safety is sought through variational extremization. The analysis indicates that the factor of safety is independent of the normal stress distribution over the critical slip surface. It also indicates that the direction of the elementary shear force over the slip surface depends on the slip surface function, but not on the normal stress function. The analysis yields a non-linear first order partial differential equation, relating the slip surface and its first partial derivatives. By limiting the analysis to symmetrical problems an ordinary differential equation, governing the slip surface path on the plane of symmetry, is derived. This equation enables the development of a numerical procedure to determine the minimal factor of safety of symmetrical 3-D slopes. Two possible failure modes are determined for homogeneous slopes. One mode consists of finite 3-D sliding body and the second represents cylindrical failure. Numerical analyses for some simple cases, of homogencous slopes are presented.

Notizen: Solutions developed in the first part of this paper (i.e. describing the response of a non-homogeneous half-space subjected to surface point and line loads) are used in this part to obtain solutions for a variety of surface loadings. Consideration is given to a distributed load acting over a circular area or strip and a rigid disk or strip subjected to applied normal load and moment. It is established that the profiles of surface settlement due to uniformly distributed loads acting over a strip or circular area are strongly dependent on the degree of non-homogeneity. This dependency is reduced when the footing is rigid. When α = 1 the moduli variation is identical to the Gibson soil and the equivalence with the Winkler soil model is established.

Notizen: The influence of pore-fluid compressibility on failure loads in certain soil mechanics problems is investigated. The results are tested using a finite element approach treating the soil as an elasto-plastic material. A limiting value for the pore-fluid compressibility to give satisfactory solutions and numerical stability is suggested.

Notizen: The application of finite element methods (FEM) is often restricted by the available computer capacity and the computing costs. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is, to present test results and to discuss possible ways of achieving a substantial reduction in computing times. Dividing the numerical analysis into the five levels-hardware, software, element-mesh and element-type, iteration technique (approximation of non-linearity) and constitutive model-one can show that the computing time can be reduced by about 20 per cent at every level. In particular, the use of the modified Newton-Raphson method for approximation of non-linearity and the constitutive model-apart from the theoretical concept (elastoplastic, hypoelastic etc.) - must be formulated in a manner which does not produce substantial changes in the coefficients of the material matrix caused by small stress changes. On the whole, computing time can be reduced to about 10 per cent of present computing costs. Thus, it would even be economically viable to solve three-dimensional non-linear problems by FEM.

Notizen: Two constitutive models for the simulation of fracture and fragmentation processes in rapidly loaded rocks are studied. The models were included in a wave propagation finite element code. The results obtained from the two models were compared by a study of the intensity and extent of fracturing obtained from two different configurations of explosive charge and reflecting surfaces in a plane strain problem. The evolution of the time dependent fracture pattern and fragmentation process is also presented.

Notizen: A modified version of the bore hole sheat device (BHSD) was used to obtain field consolidation curves in a soft sensitive clay. The Porewater pressure dissipation was monitored at the centre of one of the shear plates. This paper describes briefly the in situ device employed and demonstrates the basic features of the linearelastic F. E. program ‘SOL’. A detailed study is made to simulate the field behaviour with the finite element approach. Comparisons are made between the field and analytical consolidation behaviour. Difficulties in predicting the value of the coefficient of consolidation of a sensitive clay using the BHSD consolidation curves are discussed.

Notizen: A simple rate-dependent tension model, tailored primarily for rocks in ground-shock calculations, has been constructed. It is formulated as an internal state variable theory with spherical void development taken to approximate the underlying dissipative micromechanism. This simplifying assumption of ductile, rather than brittle, damage growth has been made to enhance the practicality of the model for large-scale problems. The model has been restated within the fromework of (strain-softening) viscoplastcity to associate it with the desirable mathematical properties of the latter theory. The tension option, extended to include healing in the post-damage compressive phase, has been implemented in a standard cap constitutive routine and is referred to as the visco-damage tension model. Model parameters are selected for a shale-like material. Results of uniaxial shock-loading strain-rate calculations exhibit desired characteristics in tension. Damage-related hysteretic effects are illustrated through cyclic loading calculations. It is planned to develop more effecient computational procedures to facilitate adoption of the model into large-scale ground shock calculations. Anisotropic extensions of the model will then be considered.

Notizen: The analysis of elasto-plastic boundary value problems using the finite element method involves many discretizations. These lead to the problem of yield surface drift in which the stress state predicted at the end of an elasto-plastic increment of loading does not lie on the current yield surface. As such discrepancies are comulative it is important to ensure that the stresses are corrected back to the yield surface during each increment of loading. In this paper five methods of accounting for this drift are examined. These involve correcting the stresses by projecting back along the plastic flow, the total strain increment and the accumulated effective stress direction. In addition a ‘correct’, method which accounts for the changes in elastic strains which accompany any stress correction is considered. This method is theoretically more sound than the other approximate approaches. All five methods have been used in finite element analyses of the stress changes that occur adjacent to a single pile installed in a uniform deposit of soil on pile loading. The soil was assumed to be normally consolidated and was modelled using a form of modified Cam Clay. Comparison of these results with an analysis, in which yield surface drift was negligible indicated that only the ‘correct’ method and the method involving projecting back along the plastic flow direction give accurate predictions. Substantiai errors occur if the other methods of correcting for yield surface drift are employed. It is recommended that the ‘correct’ method be adopted for finite element calculations.

Notizen: The axial and lateral load-displacement response of single piles and pile groups during the secondary consolidation (creep) phase of deformation is obtained by idealizing the soil as a linear viscoelastic material. The boundary element method is used to model the soil halfspace and the piles, which are assumed to behave elastically, are idealized as beam-columns. By using the correspondence principle, the problem is solved in the Laplace transform domain and the final solution is obtained by numerical inversion of the transformed data. The salient features of the viscoelastic response are identified in several non-dimensional plots which encompass the spectrum of geometrical and material parameters commonly encountered in practice. The results of the analysis compare favourably with the limited data available in the literature.

Notizen: The vibrating wire stress gauge is a borehole device for measuring stress changes in situ. Three gauge arrays are required for determining changes in the secondary principal stresses. Standard data reduction formulae that use the principal axes for reference are in error because of possible changes in the principal directions. Data reduction formulae that allow for such changes and for arbitrary gauge orientations within an array are presented here. This is of considerable practical importance when installing gauges because of scheduling restrictions and hole irregularities that may preclude installation at the planned angles for which data reduction formulae exist. Linearization and thus direct inversion of the resulting system of equations, is achieved in a fixed but otherwise arbitrarily oriented Cartesian system of reference.

Notizen: A transfer matrix method is applied for the analysis of non-linear pile group responses. The expression for the transfer matrix is obtained by idealizing the non-linear pile group as a group of piles attached to a piecewise linear “Winkler model for a pile group”. This Winkler idealization is essential to apply a transfer matrix method for the pile group response analysis. The parameters of this Winkler model can be defined from unit load transfer curves obtained for a single pile. In the limited studies carried out, it is found that the present approach predicts the response of pile groups reasonably well.

Notizen: The finite element formulation for deriving the soil stiffness matrix by idealizing the foundation as an elastic half space is presented. The procedure for condensation of the soil stiffness matrix taking symmetry into consideration is discussed. Computation time is considerable reduced when a condensed soil stiffness matrix is used for the finite element analysis of rafts resting on an elastic half space.

Notizen: Several models describing soil response under cyclic loading and the ‘liquefaction’ potential have been introduced in recent years with limited success. Most of these are over-complex for realistic parameter identification and have not been widely adopted for practical use. In this paper we introduce a relatively simple modification of the well-known critical state model which accounts reasonably well for the phenomena observed under cyclic tests and indeed improves the performance of critical state, models in monotonic loading. This model is compared with experimental results and with the ‘densification model’ introduced earlier by the authors and shows good predicitive capacity. The model is of a generalized plasticity-bounding surface type. In its simplest form, suitable for clay-like materials, it requires the identifications of a single parameter additional to those required for a standard, critical state model.

Notizen: This paper extends the bounding surface, generalized plasticity, model of Part I to reproduce the behaviour of sands under both static and transient loading. The essential features of the first model are preserved but the following changes are introduced: (i)The shape of the yield surface is modified.(ii)A non-associative flow rule is introduced.(iii)The hardening parameter of the bounding surface includes not only volumetric but also deviatoric plastic strain.(iv)Plastic volumetric and deviatoric strains are introduced during unloading. Each of these modifications can be introduced separately in a hierarchical manner to model in an improved way the behaviour of sands. Good comparison with experimental observations is recorded. The simplicity of the original model is preserved with modifications being introduced progressively to model rising complexity of the phenomena.

Notizen: A hybrid boundary element formulation for the steady state analysis of piles and pile groups embedded in a soil stratum in which the modulus increases linearly with depth is presented. The piles are represented by compressible columns or flexible beams and the soil as a hysteretic, layered medium. The explicit Green's function corresponding to dynamic loads in the interior of a layered stratum, developed earlier by Kausel is used in the study. The governing differential equations for the pile domain are solved for a distributed periodic loading intensity and those for the soil domain by a system of boundary elements at the pile-soil interface. These are then assembled into a system of algebraic equations by satisfying interface equilibrium and compatibility. The results of the analysis have been compared against those from alternative formulations, e.g. finite elements, and confirm the accuracy of the proposed formulation. Representative results for single piles and pile groups are presented.

Notizen: Remedial measures were required for a gold tailings dam in South Africa which had undergone a minor slope failure. Information from laboratory and field measurements was used for evaluation of the present and future stability as the height of the dam increased. To aid the design process, numerical methods were used for prediction of in situ conditions. Stability analyses by computer were then used to optimize the type of remedial measure.

Notizen: Use of “singularity” elements to model pore pressures in the vicinity of free-draining loaded surfaces, immediately after application of loads at these surfaces is discussed. One-dimensional consolidation is considered. Comparison of numerical results with the exact solution shows that use of specially designed elements approaching “singularity” may succeed in reducing the error in pore pressures.

Notizen: A series of experiments for studies of flammability characteristics of upholstered furniture is presented. The series comprises 53 experiments on a reduced scale and 11 full-scale experiments in an extensively instrumented room. Results are presented from measurements of rate of heat release and smoke production. The experiments indicate that ignitability can be considerably decreased by careful choice of the upholstery materials.

Notizen: A theoretical and experimental study of ceiling flows induced by both impinging fires and weak plumes on a horizontal ceiling is presented. Measurements along a ceiling radius were made of impinging diffusion flames with heat-release rates of 1.67 and 8.51 kW, resulting in convective and radiative ceiling-heat fluxes, radiant heat flux to the surroundings and profiles of mean velocity, mean temperature and mean concentrations of major species. However, only ceiling heat fluxes were obtained for weak plumes of pre-mixed flames of 0.24, 0.385 and 0.709kW. The predicted ceiling convective heat fluxes by an integral model are in good agreement with the measured values. In general, the present model also provides satisfactory predictions of flow thickness, bulk velocity, temperature and gas concentrations for both impinging fires and weak plumes.

Notizen: Some early stages of compartment fires were explored experimentally using small-scale model fires. In particuylar, the flame spread on the compartment floor was investigated with various ventilation openings. The average flame-spread rate was higher than that for the free-burning condition (without a compartment),namely, 3.2 times at the maximum, and seems to depend only on the ventilation opening height and not on its width. Therefore it appears that the driving wind of the inflow air from the ventilation opening to the flame increase-spread rate. These data were compared with the flame angle data by Quintiere. The gas temperature within the compartment and the ceiling surface temperature was also measured to assess the radiation effect on flame spread. However, the radiation heat flux was unexpectedly small.

Notizen: An examination of the correlative relationship between room fire intensity (temperature) and flammability data for materials, ASTM E-84 flame ratings and energy release rate from calorimertry devices is presented for fire spread on lings. The results of the analysis show the significance of two modes of flame spread - wind-aided and opposed-flow spread. The factors important in these spread modes are considered from approximate solutions developed for turbulent flow. As the importance of energy release rate to flame spread in the tunnel test (E-84) and in upward or wind-aided spread is illustrated. The results suggest a possible reason why the ASTM E-84 and in upward or wind-aided spread is illustrated. The results suggest a possible reason why the ASTM E-84 ratings may not be applicable to the performance of low-density combustible linings in wall fires. In the analyses, flame radiation has not been considered. Also the interpretation of energy release rate data for difference scale and orientation effects has been ignored. These two factors must ultimately be addressed.
