Description / Table of Contents: PREFACE The papers contained in the present volume were prepared from the contributions presented during an international Advanced Workshop held in Santander, Cantabria, Spain between 1-5 November 1989. The workshop was a joint activity of the Working Group on Geology and Land-Use Planning (program "Geology and Environment", UNESCO), the Commission on Applied Quaternary Research (INQUA), the Sub-Commission on Maps of Environmental Geology (Commission of the Geological Map of the World) and the Grupo Españiol de Geología Ambiental y Ordenación del Territorio (Spanish Association for Environmental Geology and Land-Use Planning). The aims of the meeting were to discuss a series of topics in which the four participating scientific bodies share an interest, to analyze the existing problems and trends and to identify certain lines along which work and/or actions will be particularly necessary in the near future. It was expected that the discussions and the conclusions of the meeting would provide useful guidelines for earth scientists working on environmental problems and for other professionals and officials who deal with environmental analysis, planning and management, either on a scientific basis or in a decision-making capacity...

Description / Table of Contents: This volume contains the proceedings of a symposium held at Freiburg im Breisgau, October 7-11, 1990. The symposium was sponsored mainly by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), by the Geological Institute of the University of Freiburg, and by the International Association of Mathematical Geology. We thank these and all other sponsors of the meeting. The symposium whose participants came from more then twenty countries was the first international meeting dedicated entirely to geological applications of threedimensional computer graphics, a rapidly growing field of scientific visualization in geology. The selection of papers in this volume covers a wide range of methods developed in the last decade.

Description / Table of Contents: The Varanger Peninsula is underlain by weakly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of Late Proterozoic to Early Cambrian age. The rocks occur in two regions: the Tanafjorden-Varangerfjorden Region (TVR) (southwestern half of the penin- sula) and the Barents Sea Region (BSR) (northeastern half), juxtaposed along a complex NW-SE-trending fault zone, The Trollfjorden-Komagelva Fault Zone (TKFZ). The BSR is considered to have been brought to its present position largely by dextral strike-slip translation along the TKFZ.

Description / Table of Contents: The CRREL Instrumented Vehicle (CIV), shear annulus, direct shear, andtriaxial compression devices were used to characterize the strength ofthawed and thawing soil. These strength values can be used in simpletraction models to predict the tractive performance of vehicles. Strength was evaluated in terms of the parameters c' and Φ' based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. It is proposed here that an instrumented vehicle is best suited for terrain characterization for mobility studies because the conditions created by a tire slipping on a soil surface are exactly duplicated. The c' and Φ' values from the shear annulus were found to overpredict traction because of the low normal stress applied by the annulus and the curved nature of the failure envelope. Of all the tests, the direct shear test yielded the highest Φ' value, most likely because the test was run at a slow deformation rate under drained conditions. The triaxial test results were the most similar to those from the vehicle. All test methods show Φ' increasingwith soil moisture up to the liquid limit of the soil and then decreasing. As measured with the vehicle, was also found to be strongly influenced by the thaw depth.

Description / Table of Contents: Large ice jams on the Salmon River have reached Salmon, Idaho, and resulted in major flood damage during 16 winters since the winter of 1936-37. Two recent ice jams, in February 1982 and January 1984, caused flooding that resulted in damages of $1 million and $1.8 million respectively. A detailed analysis of the winter air temperature records from 1936-37 through 1991-92 revealed a strong relationship between the duration and intensity of severe cold periods, the air temperature record prior to the severe cold periods, and the occurrence of ice jams reaching the city of Salmon that result in flooding. A threshold condition is identified from which the probability of icejams reaching the city can be determined from inspection of forecasted air temperatures. It was found that once an icejam reaches the city, average daily air temperatures of approximately 18 deg F are necessary to keep the jam in place. The effects of discharge on ice thickness, and therefore ice jam length, are shown to be minor and no relation could be found in this study. An ice control structure located upstream of the city of Salmon appears to be helping to alleviate ice-jam flooding.

Description / Table of Contents: The Atlas of the energy balance of the Northern Polar area has been made for the first time. It is compiled by a group of scientists of the Arctic and Antarctic research institute and its affiliation in Murmansk. The Atlas includes monthly and annual maps of solar radiation and resulting radiation fluxes at the top of the atmosphere and the earth's surface, all energy fluxes at the earth's surface, annual maps of full energy influxes in the atmosphere and the ocean due to horizontal energy exchange - all components of the energy balance of the Northern Polar area up to 65°N, calculated for mean climatic conditions. In total there are 72 maps in the atlas. The explanatory text of the atlas contains energy balance equations, methods for the calculation of balance components and their brief characteristic. The atlas is intended for scientific and prospecting work and educational purposes. It can be used by a wide range of specialists in the field of natural sciences (meteorologists, climatologists, oceanologists, hydrologists etc), students and post-graduate students of universities, hydrometeorological and teachers training institutes and by those, who are interested in tansformation of the energy in the Northern Polar area.

Description / Table of Contents: The papers in this collection were presented at the Tenth National Congress of the Australian Institute of Physics held at Melbourne University, Victoria between 10 and 14 February 1992. This antology consists of papers the authors considered relevant to Australian Antarctic research which were presented in sessions on Solar-Terrestrial and Space Physics (South Pacific STEP Workshop), papers 1 - 21, and Astrophysics, papers 22 - 32. The majority of the papers are preliminary and are intended as an indication of some of the current directions of Australian upper Atmospheric and space research in Antarctica. It is anticipated that final results will appear in appropriate journals.
