    Description: Among Alpine ice core drilling sites, the Colle Gnifetti glacier saddle situated in the Monte Rosa summit range is the only one whose net snow accumulation rate is low enough to offer climate records back to some 1000 yr. It is demonstrated that the strong snow erosion at this site particularly hampers the interpretation of stable water isotope records d18O, dD in terms of atmospheric temperature changes. We evaluate the d18O records from four Colle Gnifetti cores for their common variability to extract a composite isotope record that may be compared with the instrumental temperature evidence. Time series analyses over the last 120 yr reveal that the common d18O signal is mainly reflected in the low frequency variability, starting at the decadal scale. Comparing the correspondingly smoothed composite record to the high-elevation temperature time series (specifically adjusted to the seasonality of the net snow accumulation) reveals the following findings: On the decadal scale, the isotope variability correlates with the temperature record at around R=0.65 but is interrupted by three, ca. 10-yr long mismatch periods. The multidecadal isotope signal closely reflects the strong overall 20th century temperature increase, thereby showing an up to three-fold higher isotope temperature sensitivity than commonly assumed. Over the entire instrumental period back to 1760, five more such mismatch periods are embedded in the generally coherent pattern of the d18O and instrumental temperature records (including the strong overestimate of the temperature around 1850 by the isotope temperature proxy). For the early instrumental period (1890-1760) characterized by a comparably weak long-term temperature trend, the isotope signal generally suggests warmer conditions of about 0.4°C compared to instrumental data.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary With the help of modifications of the formulas which deal with the energy gains and losses by direct and scattered radiation, evaporation condensation and convective heat exchange with the air, it is made possible to solve the heat balance equation for a river analytically. Special attention is directed to the influence of the real horizon and to the modification of the long wave radiation term which is caused by the temperature differences between the river and its surroundings. The calculation is made in one case for the river Kamp in Lower Austria and the error which is caused by neglecting the influence of the true horizon on the river temperatures is shown.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Durch Vereinfachungen in den Formeln für den Strahlungsgenuß von Sonne und Himmel, für die Energieumsätze bei Verdunstung, Kondensation und beim konvektiven Wärmeaustausch mit der Luft ist es möglich, die zunächst nur numerisch integrierbare Wärmehaushaltsgleichung eines Flusses analytisch zu lösen. Besondere Beachtung wird dem Einfluß des natürlichen Horizontverlaufs gewidmet, und auch die Tatsache, daß bei einem Fluß infolge seiner Temperaturdifferez zur Umgebung die Ausstrahlungsverhältnisse kompliziert werden, wird berücksichtigt. Es wird die Berechnung für einen sommerlichen Schönwettertag durchgeführt und der Fehler, der durch die Nichtberücksichtigung des natürlichen Horizontverlaufs entsteht, am Beispiel des Kamp-Flusses in Niederösterreich aufgezeigt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The calculation method described by Rudel [10] and controlled by field measurements is used for riverwatertemperature calculations. The daily temperature variations of thermally charged and of uncharged rivers of different size are shown for mean climatological conditions in the months of January, April, July and October. The difference between the temperature of the artificially warmed and the uncharged river under the same meteorological conditions signifies the thermal charge. The decrease of the high temperatures downstream the warming spot (the still existing overtemperature in parts of the initial temperature-increase) is shown for four different river models.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Das von Rudel [10] beschriebene und durch Messungen überprüfte Rechenverfahren wird zur Berechnung der Temperatur von Flüssen verwendet. Es werden Tagesgänge der Wassertemperatur von ungestörten sowie von künstlich erwärmten Flüssen verschiedener Größe unter den durchschnittlichen klimatischen Bedingungen der Monate Jänner, April, Juli und Oktober berechnet. Durch Differenzbildung zwischen der Temperatur des künstlich erwärmten und des thermisch unbelasteten Flusses bei gleichen meteorologischen Bedingungen erhält man die Größe der thermischen Belastung. Der Abbau dieser Übertemperatur stromabwärts der thermischen Störstelle wird für vier verschiedene Flußmodelle gezeigt.
