    Beschreibung: We document aggregations of an undescribed benthic solitary tunicate of the family Pyuridae from the Arabian Sea. This new genus was found forming dense thickets in shallow rocky substrates around Masirah Island and the Dhofar area in Oman. Such aggregations of tunicates have not been reported before from coral reefs in the Indo-West Pacific region and the Atlantic. This observation contributes to our understanding of the ecology and biogeography of ascidians, setting the stage for a comprehensive species description and in-depth analysis of this species.

    Beschreibung: Horizontal kinematic properties, such as vorticity, divergence, and lateral strain rate, are estimated from drifter clusters using three approaches. At submesoscale horizontal length scales O(1–10)km, kinematic properties become as large as planetary vorticity f, but challenging to observe because they evolve on short time scales O(hourstodays). By simulating surface drifters in a model flow field, we quantify the sources of uncertainty in the kinematic property calculations due to the deformation of cluster shape. Uncertainties arise primarily due to (i) violation of the linear estimation methods and (ii) aliasing of unresolved scales. Systematic uncertainties (iii) due to GPS errors, are secondary but can become as large as (i) and (ii) when aspect ratios are small. Ideal cluster parameters (number of drifters, length scale, and aspect ratio) are determined and error functions estimated empirically and theoretically. The most robust method—a two-dimensional, linear least squares fit—is applied to the first few days of a drifter dataset from the Bay of Bengal. Application of the length scale and aspect-ratio criteria minimizes errors (i) and (ii), and reduces the total number of clusters and so computational cost. The drifter-estimated kinematic properties map out a cyclonic mesoscale eddy with a surface, submesoscale fronts at its perimeter. Our analyses suggest methodological guidance for computing the two-dimensional kinematic properties in submesoscale flows, given the recently increasing quantity and quality of drifter observations, while also highlighting challenges and limitations.

    Beschreibung: With an impressively wide distribution, Gehyra mutilata is present on almost all Indian and Pacific Ocean islands and in large regions of Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Mitochondrial sequence data (~500 bp) from individuals covering large parts of its (mainly insular) distribution reveals deep cryptic variation and strong geographic structure, with two well differentiated lineages. Molecular data also reveals that the wide Indian and Pacific insular distribution of Gehyra is very recent and, at least across the Indian Ocean islands, most probably the result of human-aided dispersal, as no variation within this lineage was found. Further research is needed to determine geographic patterns of variation across Southeast Asia, the level of genetic variation, and possible mechanisms of speciation. If recognized as distinct taxa, the binomen Gehyra insulensis should be resurrected, and applied to the \xe2\x80\x98Pacific lineage\xe2\x80\x99.

    Beschreibung: Ice cores extracted from the Antarctic ice sheet suggest that glacial conditions, and the relationship between isotopically derived temperatures and atmospheric PCO(2) have been constant over the last 800,000 years of the Late Pleistocene epoch. But independent lines of evidence, such as the extent of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets, sea level and other temperature records, point towards a fluctuating severity of glacial periods, particularly during the more extreme glacial stadials centred around 340,000 and 420,000 years ago (marine isotope stages 10 and 12). Previously unidentified mechanisms therefore appear to have mediated the relationship between insolation, CO(2) and climate. Here we test whether northward migration of the subtropical front (STF) off the southeastern coast of South Africa acts as a gatekeeper for the Agulhas current, which controls the transport of heat and salt from the Indo-Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Using a new 800,000-year record of sea surface temperature and ocean productivity from ocean sediment core MD962077, we demonstrate that during cold stadials (particularly marine isotope stages 10 and 12), productivity peaked and sea surface temperature was up to 6 degrees C cooler than modern temperatures. This suggests that during these cooler stadials, the STF moved northward by up to 7 degrees latitude, nearly shutting off the Agulhas current. Our results, combined with faunal assemblages from the south Atlantic show that variable northwards migration of the Southern Hemisphere STF can modulate the severity of each glacial period by altering the strength of the Agulhas current carrying heat and salt to the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation.     Beschreibung: The transport of warm and salty Indian Ocean waters into the Atlantic Ocean-the Agulhas leakage-has a crucial role in the global oceanic circulation and thus the evolution of future climate. At present these waters provide the main source of heat and salt for the surface branch of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC). There is evidence from past glacial-to-interglacial variations in foraminiferal assemblages and model studies that the amount of Agulhas leakage and its corresponding effect on the MOC has been subject to substantial change, potentially linked to latitudinal shifts in the Southern Hemisphere westerlies. A progressive poleward migration of the westerlies has been observed during the past two to three decades and linked to anthropogenic forcing, but because of the sparse observational records it has not been possible to determine whether there has been a concomitant response of Agulhas leakage. Here we present the results of a high-resolution ocean general circulation model to show that the transport of Indian Ocean waters into the South Atlantic via the Agulhas leakage has increased during the past decades in response to the change in wind forcing. The increased leakage has contributed to the observed salinification of South Atlantic thermocline waters.     Beschreibung: Phytoplankton--the microalgae that populate the upper lit layers of the ocean--fuel the oceanic food web and affect oceanic and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels through photosynthetic carbon fixation. Here, we show that multidecadal changes in global phytoplankton abundances are related to basin-scale oscillations of the physical ocean, specifically the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. This relationship is revealed in approximately 20 years of satellite observations of chlorophyll and sea surface temperature. Interaction between the main pycnocline and the upper ocean seasonal mixed layer is one mechanism behind this correlation.     Beschreibung: Operational Oceanography (OO) emerged to a stage of development that allows the design and development of services such as the routine production of environmental and climate indicators for specific users. Indicators are synthetic indices of environmental changes at various time scales. The indicators are often used by international environmental agencies and national directorates like the European Environment Agency (EEA web page on indicators: http://themes.eea.europa.eu/indicators/) and by the regional Conventions (i.e. Helcom webpage on indicators: http://www.helcom.fi/environment2/ifs/en_GB/cover/ ). In this paper we have carried out an analysis on the possible improvements of existing indicator reporting in use by EEA and on the development of new indicators based on OO products. The list of indicators includes: Temperature, Chlorophyll-a (from ocean colour), Ocean Currents and Transport, Salinity, Transparency, Sea Level, Sea Ice and Density. A critical analysis has been carried out to identify the relevance of the above mentioned indicators for EU policies, their spatial and temporal coverage, their accuracy and their availability. The Temperature and Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) products are the most suitable for an indicator development test phase. In particular the OO Chl-a product, deduced from satellite data, will be able to contribute to the further development of the EEA Chl-a indicator that is based on in-situ measurements (CSI023). Sea Level and Sea Ice products are also robust quantities for climate indicators. For the above mentioned indicators a development test phase has been undertaken in 2008 within the European Topic Center for Water (ETC-W) and BOSS4GMES (http://www.mersea.eu.org/Indicators-with-B4G.html) projects. Ocean Currents and Transports and Salinity products appear less mature for the development of new indicators at pan-European level because their connection with environmental aspects are less recognised in all European marine areas, to be noted that Transport derived indicators are available in the Norwegian Sea and in the North Sea where correlation with ecosystem components have been shown. Transparency product appears suitable for indicator production, but more effort should be put to relate the indicator to in-situ measurements. In addition to the products mentioned above, we have also identified a Density indicator that appears relevant for the eutrophication problems and ecosystem health.

    Beschreibung: Five non-eddy-resolving oceanic general circulation models driven by atmospheric fluxes derived from the NCEP reanalysis are used to investigate the link between the Gulf Stream (GS) variability, the atmospheric circulation, and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Despite the limited model resolution, the temperature at the 200-m depth along the mean GS axis behaves similarly in most models to that observed, and it is also well correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), indicating that a northward (southward) GS shift lags a positive (negative) NAO phase by 0–2 yr. The northward shift is accompanied by an increase in the GS transport, and conversely the southward shift with a decrease in the GS transport. Two dominant time scales appear in the response of the GS transport to the NAO forcing: a fast time scale (less than 1 month) for the barotropic component, and a slower one (about 2 yr) for the baroclinic component. In addition, the two components are weakly coupled. The GS response seems broadly consistent with a linear adjustment to the changes in the wind stress curl, and evidence for baroclinic Rossby wave propagation is found in the southern part of the subtropical gyre. However, the GS shifts are also affected by basin-scale changes in the oceanic conditions, and they are well correlated in most models with the changes in the AMOC. A larger AMOC is found when the GS is stronger and displaced northward, and a higher correlation is found when the observed changes of the GS position are used in the comparison. The relation between the GS and the AMOC could be explained by the inherent coupling between the thermohaline and the wind-driven circulation, or by the NAO variability driving them on similar time scales in the models.

    Beschreibung: In this paper results from the application of an ocean data assimilation (ODA) system, combining a multivariate reduced-order optimal interpolator (OI) scheme with a global ocean general circulation model (OGCM), are described. The present ODA system, designed to assimilate in situ temperature and salinity observations, has been used to produce ocean reanalyses for the 1962–2001 period. The impact of assimilating observed hydrographic data on the ocean mean state and temporal variability is evaluated. A special focus of this work is on the ODA system skill in reproducing a realistic ocean salinity state. Results from a hierarchy of different salinity reanalyses, using varying combinations of assimilated data and background error covariance structures, are described. The impact of the space and time resolution of the background error covariance parameterization on salinity is addressed.

    Beschreibung: The Mediterranean Forecasting System (MFS) is operationally working since year 2000 and it is continuously improved in the frame of international projects. The system is part of the Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network-MOON and MFS is coordinated and operated by the Italian Group of Operational Oceanography (GNOO). The latest upgrades and integration to MFS has been undertaken in the EU-MERSEA and BOSS4GMES Projects. Since October 2005 ten days forecasts are produced daily as well as 15 days of analyses once a week. The daily forecast and weekly analysis data are available in real time to the users through a dedicated ftp service and every day a web bulletin is published on the web site (http://gnoo.bo.ingv.it/mfs). A continuous evaluation in near real time of the forecasts and analyses produced by MFS has been developed in order to continuously verify the system and to provide useful information to the users. The R&D is focused on different aspects of the system. A new basin scale ocean model nested with operational MERCATOR global model has been developed and run in real time operationally for a test period together with a new assimilation scheme based on the 3DVAR. This system is now under evaluation. Important activities have been carried out to: implement and test a Bayesian methodologies of Ensemble and Super-Ensemble for the Mediterranean sea; produce 20 years of re-analysis; re-formulate the air-sea fluxes bulk formulae; develop dedicated products to support particular request of end users such as: indicators, real time oil spill forecasting, search & rescue.

    Beschreibung: The impact of ARGO trajectory assimilation on the quality of ocean analyses is studied by means of an operational oceanographic model implemented in the Mediterranean Sea and a 3D-var assimilation scheme. For the first time, both ARGO trajectories and vertical profiles together with satellite data are assimilated to produce analyses for short term forecasts. The study period covers three months during winter 2005 when four ARGO trajectories were present in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. It is shown that their integration is consistent with the other components of the assimilation system, and it contributes to refine the model error structure with new information on horizontal pressure gradients. So the analysis benefits of a more accurate description of the boundary currents and their instabilities that drive the mesoscale activity of regional circulations. As a consequence, the trajectory assimilation remotely and significantly influences the basin scale circulation. Changes can be depicted by intermediate water mass redistributions, mesoscale eddy relocations or net transports modulations. These impacts are detailed and assessed considering historical and contemporary datasets. The obtained qualitative and quantitative agreements motivate the integration of ARGO trajectories in the operational Mediterranean Forecasting System.

    Beschreibung: A new gridded climatology for the Mediterranean Sea has to be computed in the frame of the EU-Project SEADATANET. This work describes the data used and the optimal interpolation technics adopted in order to set up the work strategy for the computation of new climatology on regular grid. The horizontal resolution is of 1/8x1/8 of degree and 32 unevenly spaced vertical levels. The work will point out the data spatial and temporal distribution, the problems encountered and the preliminary results of the gridded climatology for the physical parameters.

    Beschreibung: The Turkish cargo ship “Und Adriyatik” took fire in the early morning of the 6th of February 2008 (see figure 1) due to unknown reasons, only some 13 miles offshore the coasts of Rovinj, in Northern Croatia. The ship was sailing from Istanbul to Trieste. Such an accident was a real threat to the Adriatic Sea, as the ship tanks were full of engine fuel and many trucks were on board: the risk of explosion was high at any time. At mid-morning of the same day, on behalf of the Slovenian Authorities the University of Port Rose (Slovenia) contacted the “Gruppo Nazionale di Oceanografia Operativa” of the “Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia” (GNOO-INGV) to get information on the hypothetical dispersion and fate of the oil in case of spillage from the ship. From several years, GNOO-INGV is running a daily marine forecast system of the Mediterranean Sea (MFS) and of a nested higher resolution Adriatic Sea Forecasting Systeml (AFS) with an off-line coupled oil spill model (Medslik). INGV receives atmospheric forecast from the Ufficio Generale Spazio Aereo e Meteorologia (USAM) of the Italian Air Force and it is establishing an agreement with REMPEC (Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for Mediterranean Sea) to help for management of oil spill emergencies.

    Beschreibung: Dal 2000 il gruppo di oceanografia operativa dell’INGV ha sviluppato e mantenuto un sistema di previsioni marine per il Mar Mediterraneo (Mediterranean Forecasting System - MFS). Il sistema èstato sviluppato grazie a differenti progetti europei che si sono succeduti a partire dal 1999 ad oggi quali MFSPP (Mediterranan ocen Forecasting System Pilot Project), MFSTEP (Mediterranan ocen Forecasting System Toward Environmental Predictions), MERSEA (Marine EnviRonmnet and Security for the European Area) and BOSS4GMES (Building Operational Sustainable services for GMES). Il sistema produce previsioni oceanografiche a breve termine (dieci giorni) per i campi di temperatura, salinità, corrente ed elevazione della superficie libera del mare. Nella fase iniziale di sviluppo del sistema di previsione il ciclo di produzione era settimanale (Pinardi et al. 2003), da settembre 2005 invece il sistema è giornaliero, cioè ogni giorno vengono prodotte le previsioni per i successivi dieci giorni. L’intero sistema previsionale MFS sfrutta come risorse di calcolo i 2 super calcolatori vettoriali NEC in dotazione al Gruppo di Oceanografia Operativa dell’INGV di Bologna. Le procedure girano in parallelo sulle due macchine, una in modalità operativa e l’altra in modalità backup in modo da garantire la produzione anche in caso di eventuali malfunzionamenti di uno dei due calcolatori. Tutte le procedure funzionano in maniera completamente automatica e l’intervento dell’operatore è necessario solo in caso di problemi e/o malfunzionamenti. Scopo di questo manuale è quello di fornire un’utile guida alla comprensione dei vari anelli che costituiscono la catena di produzione della previsioni giornaliere a scala di bacino del Mar Mediterraneo.

    Beschreibung: Questo lavoro di tesi può essere diviso in due parti. La prima parte si colloca all’interno della fase pilota del progetto di Mediterranean Forecasting System e consta nell’implementazione del sistema di raccolta, controllo di qualità e preparazione dei dati necessari per poter fare le previsioni utilizzando il modello numerico e lo schema di assimilazione. In particolare ci si è dedicati all’implementazione di un sistema per il controllo di qualità automatico dei dati di temperatura raccolti in situ tramite eXpandable BathyTermograph, XBT. Procedura delicata e complessa visti i differenti problemi legati alla raccolta, trasmissione e controllo di qualità di questi dati. Ci si è poi occupati, sempre all’interno di questa prima fase della gestione in maniera operativa di tutto il sistema previsionale, dall’acquisizione dei dati, alla previsone e alla pubblicazione dei risultati sul sito web dedicato, come verrà in dettaglio spiegato nel capitolo secondo. Dalla valutazione dei risultati ottenuti durante la fase pilota è emerso che un importante miglioramento al sistema di previsioni era l’implementazione di un modello di circolazione generale a scala di bacino ad alta risoluzione, in modo da poter cogliere le variazioni alla mesoscala. Ci si è quindi occupati nella seconda fase della tesi dell’implementazione del modello ad alta risoluzione, come descritto in dettaglio nei capitoli tre e quattro. L’analisi delle simulazioni effettuate col modello ad alta risoluzione ha messo in luce che la mesoscala è molto meglio risolta e ciò permette quindi di risolvere le variazioni stagionali in modo più accurato che non con il precedente modello. Il modello ad alta risoluzione ha bisogno di essere ulteriormente calibrato e modficato prima di poter essere utilizzato per fare le previsioni.     Beschreibung: The Adriatic Basin Forecasting System implemented within the framework of the ADRICOSM Partnership (ADRIatic sea integrated COstal areaS and river basin Management system), nested to the operational general circulation model of the Mediterranean Sea, has recently been upgraded both in terms of system design and model parameterizations. The operational forecast is now daily, producing 9 days forecast, and a new near real time quality control has been introduced. From the modeling point of view the system has been upgraded in resolution (vertically from 21 to 31 sigma levels, and horizontally from approximately 1/22° to approximately 1/45°). Realistic fresh water fluxes have been introduced through the surface boundary condition taking into account evaporation, precipitation and river runoff, and the Smolarckiwicz advection scheme has been changed to the MUSCL scheme. The details of these developments will be presented, together with the model validation in delayed and real time mode

    Beschreibung: During the last 15 years, operational oceanography systems have emerged in several countries around the world. This emergence has been largely fostered by the GODAE experiment, during which each nation engaged in this activity have organised partnership and constructive competition. This trans-national coordination was very beneficial for the development of operational oceanography, leading to economies of scales and more targeted actions. Today, several systems provide routine real-time ocean analysis and forecast and/or reanalysis products. They are all based on (i) state-of-the-art primitive equation baroclinic Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) configurations, either global or regional (basin-scale), with resolutions that range from coarse to eddy resolving and (ii) data assimilation techniques whose complexity ranges from simple analysis correction to advanced 4D variational schemes. They assimilate altimeter sea level anomalies, remotely sensed SST such as GHRSST products and in situ profiles of T and S, including ARGO. Some systems have implemented downscaling capacities in specific regions of interest including shelf/coastal seas. Some also have implemented coupling with the atmosphere and/or the prognostic sea ice in polar regions. They are the GODAE system in operation. They are reviewed in this paper. The GODAE system discussed here include: (1) BLUElink OceanMAPS, (2) C-NOOFS, , (3) ECCO, (4) FOAM, (5) HYCOM/NCODA, (6) MERCATOR, (7) MFS, (8) MOVE/MRI.COM, (9) NLOM/NCOM, (10) NMEFC, (11) RTOFS and (12) TOPAZ.

    Beschreibung: The conservation status of 845 zooxanthellate reef-building coral species was assessed by using International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List Criteria. Of the 704 species that could be assigned conservation status, 32.8% are in categories with elevated risk of extinction. Declines in abundance are associated with bleaching and diseases driven by elevated sea surface temperatures, with extinction risk further exacerbated by local-scale anthropogenic disturbances. The proportion of corals threatened with extinction has increased dramatically in recent decades and exceeds that of most terrestrial groups. The Caribbean has the largest proportion of corals in high extinction risk categories, whereas the Coral Triangle (western Pacific) has the highest proportion of species in all categories of elevated extinction risk.     Beschreibung: The role of mesoscales on the formation and spreading of water masses in the Western Mediterranean Sea (WMED) is studied with an ocean general circulation model (OGCM). The model is forced with inter- annually variable surface forcing for the years from 1979 to 1999. The simulations are compared with some recent observational studies of the mesoscale processes in the WMED. It is found that the model reproduces the major features of the observed mesoscale variability during the preconditioning of the deep convection in the Gulf of Lions and also the large mesoscale eddies evolution in the Algerian Basin. Thus the model is used to study the deep convection in the Gulf of Lions and the processes of spreading of deep waters after the convection period. The simulations suggest that the flow structure during the preconditioning period is dominated by the Ligurian- Provencal Current in the surface and intermediate layers, which intensifies, meanders and forms a mesoscale vortex over the Rhone fan. In the deep layers the density structures due to the old deep waters tend to organise in (deep) mesoscale cyclonic eddies. The instability of the transition zone between old and newly formed deep waters, which takes place after the violent mixing stages of the deep convection, leads to collapse of the mixed patch and formation of mesoscale eddies. Some of these eddies propagate out of the Gulf of Lions transporting deep waters into the Algerian Basin. The rest of the mesoscale eddies filled with newly formed deep waters remain in the Gulf of Lions, and tend to merge, enlarge and reorganise in an area with two or three large cyclonic eddies. After the cyclonic eddies reach the Algerian Basin they interact with the intense mesoscale field existing there. The model data together with the available satellite SLA data reveal a regular westward propagation of mesoscale eddies in the Northern Algerian Basin. This transport together with southward propagation of mesoscale eddies out of the Gulf of Lions is suggesting that the intermediate and deep waters of the WMED are transported westward by mesoscale eddies. Equivalently we can argue the intermediate and deep waters conveyor belt of the WMED is eddy driven.

    Beschreibung: The Benthic Boundary Layer (BBL) is considered a quite homogeneous environment where a wide variety of processes (chemical, physical, geological and biological) occur often producing front structures or inducing turbulence phenomena. The typical stratification of these zones can be interrupted by episodic events which effects can diffuse to the ocean interior exploiting by local current and mixing processes. According to hydrodynamic definition, the BBL thickness may vary from few millimetres up to 100 metres depending on the friction intensity with the sea bed and the stability of water column above it. Generally in deep-sea condition, the BBL thickness is defined by the ratio between the friction velocity and the Coriolis parameter according to the Ekman scale. In the latest years several experiments have been carried out in the deep water of Mediterranean Sea, focusing on the survey and study of benthic processes following a multidisciplinary approach. Benthic observatories, such as SN-1 and GEOSTAR, allow to record long time-series of geochemical, seismological, geomagnetic, geodetic and oceanographic data and allow to understand the dynamics and evolution of the processes though comparison and interpolation of different types of signals. From a oceanographic point of view, the technology of these benthic observatories brings the possibility to observe and measure directly the hydrological properties at the seafloor collecting data for long-time series and with high sampling rate. The observatories deployed in Mediterranean Sea, have provided good information about variations and oscillations of hydrological parameters in deep water where the monitoring is almost lacking. In some cases it has been possible to link these deep-sea datasets with upper data collected by ship-handled system during the same period or during different cruises. This allows to have a more complete idea of the linkage between surface, intermediate and bottom sea. Hence the multidisciplinary approach represents a very important aspect for this kind of study, because it allows not only a cross check of functionality among all the instruments but also an important tool to recognise and better understand possible nonphysical- oceanographic phenomena.

    Beschreibung: Temperature and salinity data collected during the October 2002- October 2003 period have been assimilated into a version of the Princeton Ocean Model implemented over the entire Adriatic Sea. The scheme used is SOFA (System for Ocean Analysis and Forecast, DE MEY & BENKIRAN, 2002) and this is the first coastal application of this scheme. The CTD data were collected in 4 coastal areas (Emilia – Romagna Coastal strip, the Gulf of Trieste, the Rovinj and Pelješac-Vis-Drvenik coastal strips) while temperature profiles were acquired with XBT in the southern Adriatic Sea deep ocean areas. The analysis skill scores are examined in order to evaluate the assimilation performance. The results of the assimilation are first compared with independent analyses of satellite Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and it is found that assimilation of profiles improves the SST model estimate. Furthermore, the Root Mean Square (RMS) difference between model and temperature and salinity profiles before data insertion is analysed. The range of RMS temperature error is less than 1 0C for the entire area and decreases with time, indicating a positive impact of the assimilation. The RMS of salinity is less than 1 psu and it also shows a decreasing trend during the assimilation period.

    Beschreibung: The investigation of the Benthic Boundary Layer (BBL) involves the study of a wide spectrum of different, but connected, processes. In order to study the evolution of physical, geochemical, geological and biological phenomena, and to comprehend their possible relationships, a long-term monitoring with the seafloor observatory support is necessary. Unlike mooring approach, the sea bottom observatories represent a more stable platform wherein a wide variety of instrument can be mounted, giving several advantages on power autonomy and higher sampling rate. In addition, the shortest distance to the bottom of observatory instruments, permits to appreciate even phenomena that can happen close to the sea bottom. The stable localisation of all the instruments at the same bottom depth and their accurate unit time reference allow a relatively easier and efficient comparison of different kind of signals recorded in situ, offering a new and interesting possibility to better understand and describe possible benthic processes. Although to collect long-time series often can give some instrumental drifting problems (especially for the electrode sensors or, in shallow environment, due to bigger befouling activity), an efficient instrumental pre and post-calibration, as well as the possibility to collect water samples during the long period of measurements, guarantee to restore the signals recorded during the data processing phases. The versatility of these observatories then offers a good opportunity to investigate, in the same time, different natural fields and with different instrumental approaches. In addition, it permit to discover that the BBL is not at all a stable environment but, as all the interface layers, it is dominated by strong dynamics processes.

    Beschreibung: The Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) is one of the main components of the Asian summer monsoon. It is well known that one of the starting mechanisms of a summer monsoon is the thermal contrast between land and ocean and that sea surface temperature (SST) and moisture are crucial factors for its evolution and intensity. The Indian Ocean, therefore, may play a very important role in the generation and evolution of the ISM itself. A coupled general circulation model, implemented with a high resolution atmospheric component, appears to be able to simulate the Indian summer monsoon in a realistic way. In particular, the features of the simulated ISM variability are similar to the observations. In this study, the relationships between ISM and Tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) SST anomalies are investigated, as well as the ability of the coupled model to capture those connections. The recent discovery of the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (IODM) may suggest new perspectives in the relationship between ISM and TIO SST. A new statistical technique, the Coupled Manifold, is used to investigate the TIO SST variability and its relation with the Tropical Pacific Ocean (TPO). The analysis shows that the SST variability in the TIO contains a significant portion that is independent from the TPO variability.     Beschreibung: The Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) is one of the main components of the Asian summer monsoon. It is well known that one of the starting mechanisms of a summer monsoon is the thermal contrast between land and ocean and that sea surface temperature (SST) and moisture are crucial factors for its evolution and intensity. The Indian Ocean, therefore, may play a very important role in the generation and evolution of the ISM itself. A coupled general circulation model, implemented with a high resolution atmospheric component, appears to be able to simulate the Indian summer monsoon in a realistic way. In particular, the features of the simulated ISM variability are similar to the observations. In this study, the relationships between ISM and Tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) SST anomalies are investigated, as well as the ability of the coupled model to capture those connections. The recent discovery of the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (IODM) may suggest new perspectives in the relationship between ISM and TIO SST. A new statistical technique, the Coupled Manifold, is used to investigate the TIO SST variability and its relation with the Tropical Pacific Ocean (TPO). The analysis shows that the SST variability in the TIO contains a significant portion that is independent from the TPO variability. The same technique is used to estimate the amount of Indian rainfall variability that can be explained by the Tropical Indian Ocean SST.     Beschreibung: Objectives: The Project aims at the further development of an operational forecasting system for the Mediterranean Sea based upon three main components: a) a Real Time-RT Observing system; b) a numerical forecasting system at the basin scale and for the sub-regional/shelf areas; c) the forecast products dissemination/exploitation system. The Observing system component consists of: • a SOOP-VOS system with RT data dissemination and test of new sensors that collect multidisciplinary data; • a moored buoy network (M3A) designed to serve the RT validation of the basin scale models and the calibration of the ecosystem models; • a satellite RT data analysis system using several satellites for sea surface elevation, sea surface temperature and sea surface winds; • a high space-time resolution network of autonomous subsurface profiling floats (Array for Real-Time Geostrophic Oceanography-ARGO); • a basin scale glider autonomous vehicle experiment; The sampling strategy is continuously assessed by the Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) activities and a RT data management and delayed mode archiving system has been organized.

    Beschreibung: This study presents the upgrade of the Optimal Interpolation scheme used in the basin scale assimilation scheme of the Mediterranean Forecasting System. The modifications include a daily analysis cycle, the assimilation of ARGO float profiles, the implementation of the geostrophic balance in the background error covariance matrix and the initialisation of the analyses. A series of numerical experiments showed that each modification had a positive impact on the accuracy of the analyses: The daily cycle improved the representation of the processes with the temporal variability shorter than a week, the assimilation of ARGO floats profiles significantly improved the salinity analyses quality, the geostrophically balanced background error covariances improved the accuracy of the surface elevation analyses, and the initialisation removed the barotropic adjustment in the forecast first time steps starting from the analysis.

    Colombo : Indo-Pacific Tuna Development and Management Programme

    Beschreibung: Since 1983, tuna purse seine fishery has increased rapidly in the Indian Ocean. This fishery, being mostly based in Seychelles, represents an excellent opportunity to this country. However, it is essential that a good management strategy be adopted in order to ensure the rational exploitation of the resources. Since this fishery is in its early stage of development, it is not yet possible to obtain an accurate assessment of the stocks based on usual stock assessment methods. Nevertheless, from existing knowledge on the Indian and Atlantic oceans, a preliminary analysis of the resources is attempted. Of the two stocks studied, the skipjack, known as an opportunist species, can support a higher exploitation rate than the yellowfin. It would seem that catches of Indian Ocean yellowfin can be increased, but in view of the lack of knowledge, it would be more reasonable to maintain the actual level of effort in the purse seine fishery.

    Beschreibung: Net northward transport below γn 〉 28.1 kgm−3 (≈3200 m) into the Perth Basin of between 4.4 and 5.8 Sv is estimated from a year-long current meter mooring array between the Broken and Naturaliste Plateaus. Northward transport of between 2.0 and 2.5 Sv of Antarctic Bottom Water (γn 〉28.2 kgm−3), that must upwell within the southern region of the Perth Basin, results in an area-averaged diapycnal velocity and diffusivity of w*=2.5− 3.1× 10−6 ms−1 and κ = 13−15×10−4 m2s−1, respectively. Diffusivity estimates for the Perth Basin are several times larger than area averaged mixing estimates for the abyssal subtropical South Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy required to maintain the abyssal mixing in the Perth basin, ε=O(10−9 Wkg−1), is similar to that required in the South Atlantic Ocean. The area-averaged diffusivity in the Perth Basin does not require unreasonable energy dissipation rates as this ocean basin is only weakly stratified. The abyssal diffuvisity of the Perth Basin results from intense mixing at the basin boundary and in the basin interior over rough topography. The complex bathymetry and low abyssal stratification suggests that the Indian Ocean, for a given energy dissipation, may support a larger meridional overturning circulation than other subtropical basins.

    Beschreibung: By using data collected during a continuous circumnavigation of the Southern Hemisphere, we observed clear patterns in the population-genetic structure of Prochlorococcus, the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth, between and within the three Southern Subtropical Gyres.     Beschreibung: We explore the path between Indian Ocean observations and monsoon dynamics, the societal impacts of interannual climate variations and applications of resource predictions in southeastern Africa, the Mascarene Islands, India, southeast Asia and Australia. Recent progress in understanding ocean dynamics associated with SST variation is reviewed. The global El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) affects monsoon winds and ocean temperatures in a manner consistent with, but lagging, the Pacific. The ENSO influence often propagates across the tropical Indian Ocean from Africa to Indonesia, modulating the tropospheric moisture flux over the Indian Ocean and rainfall in surrounding continents. An east-west dipole in SST anomalies and monsoon rainfall is identified and related to the atmospheric Walker Cell. It appears partially in response to global ENSO conditions during build-up phase (July-Nov.). The eastern ‘node’ is confined near Sumatra, whilst the western centre of action extends from the Maldives to the Seychelles Islands. Correlations indicate that the strength of ENSO in the Indian Ocean region has decreased in recent decades, while large scale, spatial and temporal patterns suggest independent variations of the Indian Ocean. Apart from annual variations of the monsoon and year-to-year fluctuations of climate, short-term weather events have a dramatic impact on countries around the Indian Ocean. Recent floods in southern (2000) and eastern (1997- 98) Africa and southeast Asia (1998) are related to SST patterns and localised atmospheric responses. Predictions of the future availability of food and water resources, and short-term forecasts of storm events are some of the decision tools that can be offered through information from ocean data. The close relationship between regional SST anomalies and impacts on the food and water resources of surrounding countries provides a strong motivation for sustained observations in the Indian Ocean. A specific design plan for the observational network is proposed, linking eastern and western efforts in an efficient manner.

    Beschreibung: This is the final data report of all acoustically tracked second-generation Deep Lagrangian Drifter (DLD2) RAFOS float data collected by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 2001-2003 during the Red Sea Outflow Experiment (REDSOX). The float component of REDSOX was comprised of two deployments on the R/V Knorr and R/V Ewing: the first in February-March 2001, with 26 floats, and the second in August-September 2001, with 27 floats. The isobaric floats were ballasted for 650 decibars to target the intermediate-depth, high-salinity outflow waters from the Red Sea. The objectives of the Lagrangian float study were (1) to identify the spreading pathways of the equilibrated Red Sea outflow, and to quantify the velocities and eddy variability typical of this outflow and of the background oceanic environment in the Gulf of Aden, and (2) to identify and describe the mesoscale processes which contribute to the seaward transport of Red Sea Overflow Water properties through the Gulf of Aden and into the western Indian Ocean. In addition to floats activated and launched during the two cruises, four time-series sites were chosen for dual-release float moorings. The dual-release floats were released every two months between cruises and every two months after the second cruise, with the final release in March 2002. A pirate attack on the R/V Ewing forced some modification of the float deployment plan during the second cruise.

    Beschreibung: Zooplankton reside in a constantly flowing environment. However, information about their response to ambient flow has remained elusive, because of the difficulties of following the individual motions of these minute, nearly transparent animals in the ocean. Using a three-dimensional acoustic imaging system, we tracked 〉375,000 zooplankters at two coastal sites in the Red Sea. Resolution of their motion from that of the water showed that the animals effectively maintained their depth by swimming against upwelling and downwelling currents moving at rates of up to tens of body lengths per second, causing their accumulation at frontal zones.     Beschreibung: The large-scale spatial dynamics and population structure of marine top predators are poorly known. We present electronic tag and photographic identification data showing a complex suite of behavioral patterns in white sharks. These include coastal return migrations and the fastest known transoceanic return migration among swimming fauna, which provide direct evidence of a link between widely separated populations in South Africa and Australia. Transoceanic return migration involved a return to the original capture location, dives to depths of 980 meters, and the tolerance of water temperatures as low as 3.4 degrees C.     Beschreibung: The 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami had major effects on coastal communities and ecosystems. An assessment of coastlines after the tsunami indicates that coastal vegetation such as mangroves and beach forests helped to provide protection and reduce effects on adjacent communities. In recent years, mangroves and other coastal vegetation have been cleared or degraded along many coastlines, increasing their vulnerability to storm and tsunami damage.
