    Notes: Er-doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-SiEr:H) thin films were deposited by cosputtering. After deposition, the samples were submitted to annealing treatments employing Ar+ and Nd-YAG lasers. Thermal anneals in a temperature-controlled furnace were also performed for comparison purposes. Photoluminescence, optical absorption in the infrared energy region, and Raman spectroscopies were carried out after each annealing treatment. Based on the experimental data, some mechanisms associated with the different annealing procedures and Er3+ ion excitation are proposed and discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this work, two sets of lead fluoroindogallate glasses were studied with the aim of using them as active media for laser devices at the mid infrared (∼2.8 μm) and visible (∼0.54 μm) regions. The infrared and upconverted emissions of Er3+ in single and Er3+:Yb3+ codoped samples were analyzed, and it was observed that the best set of samples for 2.8 μm emission was the single doped one, and that as the upconversion (anti-Stokes luminescence) increased as a function of Yb3+ concentration, the infrared emission decreased in the same manner. The results suggest that the codoping with Yb3+ favors only the upconversion processes which depopulate the 4I11/2 level, reducing the 2.8 μm emission intensity. On the other hand, the Yb3+ codoping will certainly increase the efficiency of an upconversion based device. Quantum efficiencies of infrared emissions and radiative lifetimes were calculated by using the Judd–Ofelt approximation. Er3+–Er3+ and Er3+–Yb3+ energy transfer efficiencies were calculated using the measured lifetimes of the levels involved in the energy transfer processes. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this work we report a room temperature green upconversion in Er-doped fluoroindogallate glasses, pumped at 833 nm. The rise time and stationary intensity of the 4S3/2+2H11/2→4I15/2 Er3+ transition as a function of laser intensity were monitored. Some possible pumping mechanisms are discussed in detail, and it is concluded that the main pumping route may be described in terms of the looping mechanism. It is also shown that cross relaxation among neighboring pairs of Er3+ ions is near the threshold value to achieve the photon avalanche region. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy was carried out on the 4I13/2→4I15/2 transition from Er-doped amorphous silicon–nitrogen thin film alloys (a-SiN). The sample was prepared by cosputtering of a Si target partially covered with Er pellets. It is demonstrated that Er3+ ions may be excited by direct sharp-line intra-4f-shell absorption as well as by energy transfer from the a-SiN matrix. The effects of temperature and possible energy transfer mechanisms to Er ions are presented and discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this letter, we investigate the midinfrared photoluminescence of a series of diode-pumped Er3+-doped and Er3+, Yb3+-codoped low-silica content aluminosilicate glasses. Emission at 2.8 μm was observed in both single doped and codoped samples. The effect of Yb3+ codoping of the Er3+-doped samples was such that, for example, for a 2 wt % Er3+-doped, the photoluminescence yield at 2.8 μm was found to be roughly three times larger than that of the single 2 wt % Er3+-doped sample. This behavior was attributed to the efficient sensitization of Er3+ by Yb3+ in our oxide based host glasses. The results reported in this letter, together with the outstanding mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties of these glasses, suggest that rare-earth doped calcium aluminate glasses may become an attractive host for the development of solid state lasers operating in the midinfrared. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Peanut plants (cv. Shulamit) were grown in an Oxisol soil in pots in the glasshouse to assess effects of soil sterilization and inoculation with spores of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) on the response to five rates of phosphorus (0 to 240 kg P ha−1) and two rates of zinc (0 and 10 kg Zn ha−1) fertilizers. Both P and Zn nutrition were affected by VAMF activity but the dominant role of VAMF in this soil type was in uptake of P. In the absence of VAMF there was a clear threshold level of P application (60 kg P ha−1) below which plants grew poorly, which resulted in a sigmoidal response of dry matter to applied P. The maximum response was not fully defined because dry matter production continued to increase up to 240 kg P ha−1. Tissue P concentration of non-mycorrhizal plants increased linearly with P rate and was always significantly less than that in mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal plants responded without threshold to increasing P rate, attaining maximum dry matter at 120 kg P ha−1 in inoculated sterilized soil and at 30 kg P ha−1 in nonsterile soil. These differences in maximal P rates and in the greater dry matter produced in sterile soil at high P rates were attributed to the negative effects of the root-knot nematodeMeloidogyne hapla in nonsterile soil. Plant weight did not respond to zinc fertilizer but tissue Zn concentration increased with applied Zn. Tissue Zn concentration and uptake were increased by VAMF.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of soil sterilization and inoculation with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) on VAMF colonization, nutrition and growth of peanut plants (cv. Virginia Bunch) were investigated in an Oxisol soil in pots in the glasshouse. Sterilization, nutrient and inoculation treatments were applied to soil with a history of either continuous summer cropping (〉50 years) or continuous grass pasture. Root colonization by VAMF was strongly affected by sterilization of soil from both cropping histories. Irradiation and aerated steam treatments virtually eliminated VAMF colonization; methyl bromide+chloropicrin caused an early reduction in colonization which was no longer visible twenty-one days after flowering; and DD+methyl isothiocyanate caused no significant reduction. Despite earlier differences in VAMF colonization of roots, plant growth responses were not recorded until after flowering. Plant growth 21 days after flowering was strongly correlated with VAMF colonization at first flower and at 21 days after first flower. Effective soil sterilization caused significant reductions in plant growth which were eliminated by addition of VAMF inoculum. Growth reductions in the absence of VAMF could be directly related to severe P deficiency, which was reflected in P uptake as early as first flower; Zn uptake was also reduced. Although VAMF colonization was slightly higher in grassland than in continuously cropped soil, growth responses to VAMF inoculation were not observed in unsterilized soil regardless of cropping history, indicating a general adequacy of resident VAMF populations. Plants grew better in untreated cropped soil than in grassland soil although growth was poor in both after effective soil sterilization. These differences could be related to the higher level of available P in the cropped soil and the inability of plants to access this P in the absence of VAMF. Regular applications of N-free nutrient solution had no effect on plant growth even in effectively sterilized soil, suggesting a threshold response to P in the absence of VAMF in this soil.

    Notes: Methylmercuration of cytidine-3′-monophosphate is shown to occur at the N-3 site, resulting in a substantial upfield shift in the 15N resonance of this nitrogen. For guanosine-5′-monophosphate the 15N NMR data show N-1 to be the site of complexation of CH3Hg+ at pH 8. The large downfield shift observed for N-1 as a result of this binding is explained in terms of a concomitant deprotonation phenomenon. Changes in 13C NMR chemical shifts on methylmercuration are less pronounced, but consistent with these binding sites.
