    Description: This open access book as one of the fastest-growing areas of research in machine learning, metalearning studies principled methods to obtain efficient models and solutions by adapting machine learning and data mining processes. This adaptation usually exploits information from past experience on other tasks and the adaptive processes can involve machine learning approaches. As a related area to metalearning and a hot topic currently, automated machine learning (AutoML) is concerned with automating the machine learning processes. Metalearning and AutoML can help AI learn to control the application of different learning methods and acquire new solutions faster without unnecessary interventions from the user. This book offers a comprehensive and thorough introduction to almost all aspects of metalearning and AutoML, covering the basic concepts and architecture, evaluation, datasets, hyperparameter optimization, ensembles and workflows, and also how this knowledge can be used to select, combine, compose, adapt and configure both algorithms and models to yield faster and better solutions to data mining and data science problems. It can thus help developers to develop systems that can improve themselves through experience. This book is a substantial update of the first edition published in 2009. It includes 18 chapters, more than twice as much as the previous version. This enabled the authors to cover the most relevant topics in more depth and incorporate the overview of recent research in the respective area. The book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in the areas of machine learning, data mining, data science and artificial intelligence. ; Metalearning is the study of principled methods that exploit metaknowledge to obtain efficient models and solutions by adapting machine learning and data mining processes.     Description: This open access book introduces Vector semantics, which links the formal theory of word vectors to the cognitive theory of linguistics. The computational linguists and deep learning researchers who developed word vectors have relied primarily on the ever-increasing availability of large corpora and of computers with highly parallel GPU and TPU compute engines, and their focus is with endowing computers with natural language capabilities for practical applications such as machine translation or question answering. Cognitive linguists investigate natural language from the perspective of human cognition, the relation between language and thought, and questions about conceptual universals, relying primarily on in-depth investigation of language in use. In spite of the fact that these two schools both have ‘linguistics’ in their name, so far there has been very limited communication between them, as their historical origins, data collection methods, and conceptual apparatuses are quite different. Vector semantics bridges the gap by presenting a formal theory, cast in terms of linear polytopes, that generalizes both word vectors and conceptual structures, by treating each dictionary definition as an equation, and the entire lexicon as a set of equations mutually constraining all meanings.

    Description: This open access book discusses the statistical modeling of insurance problems, a process which comprises data collection, data analysis and statistical model building to forecast insured events that may happen in the future. It presents the mathematical foundations behind these fundamental statistical concepts and how they can be applied in daily actuarial practice. Statistical modeling has a wide range of applications, and, depending on the application, the theoretical aspects may be weighted differently: here the main focus is on prediction rather than explanation. Starting with a presentation of state-of-the-art actuarial models, such as generalized linear models, the book then dives into modern machine learning tools such as neural networks and text recognition to improve predictive modeling with complex features. Providing practitioners with detailed guidance on how to apply machine learning methods to real-world data sets, and how to interpret the results without losing sight of the mathematical assumptions on which these methods are based, the book can serve as a modern basis for an actuarial education syllabus.

The Person-Centered Care (PCC) positions a person in the center of a healthcare system, instead of defining a patient as a set of diagnoses and treatment episodes.     Description: From fundamental concepts and results to recent advances in computational social choice, this open access book provides a thorough and in-depth look at multi-winner voting based on approval preferences. The main focus is on axiomatic analysis, algorithmic results and several applications that are relevant in artificial intelligence, computer science and elections of any kind. What is the best way to select a set of candidates for a shortlist, for an executive committee, or for product recommendations? Multi-winner voting is the process of selecting a fixed-size set of candidates based on the preferences expressed by the voters. A wide variety of decision processes in settings ranging from politics (parliamentary elections) to the design of modern computer applications (collaborative filtering, dynamic Q&A platforms, diversity in search results, etc.) share the problem of identifying a representative subset of alternatives. The study of multi-winner voting provides the principled analysis of this task. Approval-based committee voting rules (in short: ABC rules) are multi-winner voting rules particularly suitable for practical use. Their usability is founded on the straightforward form in which the voters can express preferences: voters simply have to differentiate between approved and disapproved candidates. Proposals for ABC rules are numerous, some dating back to the late 19th century while others have been introduced only very recently. This book explains and discusses these rules, highlighting their individual strengths and weaknesses. With the help of this book, the reader will be able to choose a suitable ABC voting rule in a principled fashion, participate in, and be up to date with the ongoing research on this topic.

    Description: This open access book proposes a novel approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethics. AI offers many advantages: better and faster medical diagnoses, improved business processes and efficiency, and the automation of boring work. But undesirable and ethically problematic consequences are possible too: biases and discrimination, breaches of privacy and security, and societal distortions such as unemployment, economic exploitation and weakened democratic processes. There is even a prospect, ultimately, of super-intelligent machines replacing humans. The key question, then, is: how can we benefit from AI while addressing its ethical problems? This book presents an innovative answer to the question by presenting a different perspective on AI and its ethical consequences. Instead of looking at individual AI techniques, applications or ethical issues, we can understand AI as a system of ecosystems, consisting of numerous interdependent technologies, applications and stakeholders. Developing this idea, the book explores how AI ecosystems can be shaped to foster human flourishing. Drawing on rich empirical insights and detailed conceptual analysis, it suggests practical measures to ensure that AI is used to make the world a better place.

    Description: This edited open access book presents the comprehensive outcome of The European DataBio Project, which examined new data-driven methods to shape a bioeconomy. These methods are used to develop new and sustainable ways to use forest, farm and fishery resources. As a European initiative, the goal is to use these new findings to support decision-makers and producers – meaning farmers, land and forest owners and fishermen. With their 27 pilot projects from 17 countries, the authors examine important sectors and highlight examples where modern data-driven methods were used to increase sustainability. How can farmers, foresters or fishermen use these insights in their daily lives? The authors answer this and other questions for our readers. The first four parts of this book give an overview of the big data technologies relevant for optimal raw material gathering. The next three parts put these technologies into perspective, by showing useable applications from farming, forestry and fishery. The final part of this book gives a summary and a view on the future. With its broad outlook and variety of topics, this book is an enrichment for students and scientists in bioeconomy, biodiversity and renewable resources.

    Description: This open access book mainly focuses on the safe control of robot manipulators. The control schemes are mainly developed based on dynamic neural network, which is an important theoretical branch of deep reinforcement learning. In order to enhance the safety performance of robot systems, the control strategies include adaptive tracking control for robots with model uncertainties, compliance control in uncertain environments, obstacle avoidance in dynamic workspace. The idea for this book on solving safe control of robot arms was conceived during the industrial applications and the research discussion in the laboratory. Most of the materials in this book are derived from the authors’ papers published in journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, neurocomputing, etc. This book can be used as a reference book for researcher and designer of the robotic systems and AI based controllers, and can also be used as a reference book for senior undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities.

    Description: This open access book provides an overview of the recent advances in representation learning theory, algorithms and applications for natural language processing (NLP).     Notes: Abstract Motivated by the success of implementing expert systems (ESs) based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) to improved classical rule-based expert systems (RBESs), this paper reports on the development of a neuro-based expert system (NBES) for facility layout construction in a manufacturing system. In an artificial intelligence (AI) technique such as the NBES, the semantic structure of If-Then rules is preserved, while incorporating the learning capability of ANNs into the inference mechanism. Unlike implementing a popular back propagation network (BPN) as an ES, the proposed BAMFLO (Bidirectional Associative Memories for Facility LayOut) system is an intelligent layout consultant system consisting of pipeline BAM neural networks with simple, fast incremental learning and multiple bidirectional generalization characteristics. This incrementability makes BAMFLO effective at acquiring, adding or adapting learned layout knowledge; thus it is possible to memorize newly extended If-Then layout rules without retraining old ones. The multi-bidirectionality gives BAMFLO the ability to quickly and reliably generalize a layout solution, and to further infer unknown facts from known facts through a complex knowledge base (memorization) without losing information. The solution process of BAMFLO contains three essential steps: training example generation, incremental learning and solution generalization. The examples (layout knowledge) can be generated from practical experience and/or classical layout software solutions for incrementally training BAMFLO; the process then derives multiply bidirectionally generalized construction layout solutions. The experimental results show that the BAMFLO scheme outperforms five classical layout methods used to generate training examples.

    Notes: Abstract After briefly discussing the relevance of the notions ‘computation’ and ‘implementation’ for cognitive science, I summarize some of the problems that have been found in their most common interpretations. In particular, I argue that standard notions of computation together with a ‘state-to-state correspondence view of implementation’ cannot overcome difficulties posed by Putnam's Realization Theorem and that, therefore, a different approach to implementation is required. The notion ‘realization of a function’, developed out of physical theories, is then introduced as a replacement for the notional pair ‘computation-implementation’. After gradual refinement, taking practical constraints into account, this notion gives rise to the notion ‘digital system’ which singles out physical systems that could be actually used, and possibly even built.

    Notes: Abstract A market-based algorithm is presented which autonomously apportions complex tasks to multiple cooperating agents giving each agent the motivation of improving performance of the whole system. A specific model, called “The Hayek Machine” is proposed and tested on a simulated Blocks World (BW) planning problem. Hayek learns to solve more complex BW problems than any previous learning algorithm. Given intermediate reward and simple features, it has learned to efficiently solve arbitrary BW problems. The Hayek Machine can also be seen as a model of evolutionary economics.

    Notes: Abstract A novel neural model made up of two self-organizing maps nets – one on top of the other – is introduced and analysed experimentally. The model makes effective use of context information, and that enables it to perform sequence classification and discrimination efficiently. It was successfully applied to real sequences, taken from the third voice of the sixteenth four-part fugue in G minor of the Well-Tempered Clavier (vol. I) of J.S. Bach. The model has an application in domains which require pattern recognition, or more specifically, which demand the recognition of either a set of sequences of vectors in time or sub-sequences into a unique and large sequence of vectors in time.

    Notes: Abstract Resistance to chemicals is a common current problem in many pests and pathogens that formerly were controlled by chemicals. An extreme case occurs in rapidly mutating viruses such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), where the emergence of selective drug resistance within an individual patient may become an important factor in treatment choice. The HIV patient subpopulation that already has experienced at least one treatment failure due to drug resistance is considered more challenging to treat because the treatment options have been reduced. A triply nested combinatorial optimization problem occurs in computational attempts to optimize HIV patient treatment protocol (drug regimen) with respect to drug resistance, given a set of HIV genetic sequences from the patient. In this paper the optimization problem is characterized, and the objects involved are represented computationally. An implemented branch-and-bound algorithm that computes a solution to the problem is described and proved correct. Data shown includes empirical timing results on representative patient data, example clinical output, and summary statistics from an initial small-scale human clinical trial.

Specifically, we show how assembly trees can be coded into operators for machine planners and how machine planners can represent flow-lines, assembly and job-shop choices.     Notes: Abstract The paper examines the nature of the behavioral evidence underlying attributions of intelligence in the case of human beings, and how this might be extended to other kinds of cognitive system, in the spirit of the original Turing Test (TT). I consider Harnad's Total Turing Test (TTT), which involves successful performance of both linguistic and robotic behavior, and which is often thought to incorporate the very same range of empirical data that is available in the human case. However, I argue that the TTT is still too weak, because it only tests the capabilities of particular tokens within a preexisting context of intelligent behavior. What is needed is a test of the cognitive type, as manifested through a number of exemplary tokens, in order to confirm that the cognitive type is able to produce the context of intelligent behavior presupposed by tests such as the TT and TTT.

    Notes: Abstract I analyze the frame problem and its relation to other epistemological problems for artificial intelligence, such as the problem of induction, the qualification problem and the "general" AI problem. I dispute the claim that extensions to logic (default logic and circumscriptive logic) will ever offer a viable way out of the problem. In the discussion it will become clear that the original frame problem is really a fairy tale: as originally presented, and as tools for its solution are circumscribed by Pat Hayes, the problem is entertaining, but incapable of resolution. The solution to the frame problem becomes available, and even apparent, when we remove artificial restrictions on its treatment and understand the interrelation between the frame problem and the many other problems for artificial epistemology. I present the solution to the frame problem: an adequate theory and method for the machine induction of causal structure. Whereas this solution is clearly satisfactory in principle, and in practice real progress has been made in recent years in its application, its ultimate implementation is in prospect only for future generations of AI researchers.

    Notes: Abstract The excavation of foundations, general earthworks and earth removal tasks are activities which involve the machine operator in a series of repetitive operations, suggesting opportunities for the automation through the introduction of robotic technologies with subsequent improvements in machine utilisation and throughput. The automation of the earth removal process is also likely to provide a number of other benefits such as a reduced dependence on operator skills and a lower operator work load, both of which might be expected to contribute to improvements in quality and, in particular, the removal of the need for a local operator when working in hazardous environments. The Lancaster University Computerised Intelligent Excavator or LUCIE has demonstrated the achievement of automated and robotic excavation through the implementation of an integrated, real-time, artificial intelligence based control system utilising a novel form of motion control strategy for movement of the excavator bucket through ground. Having its origins in the systematic observation of a range of machine operators of differing levels of expertise, the control strategy as evolved enables the autonomous excavation of a high quality rectangular trench in a wide variety of types and conditions of ground and the autonomous removal of obstacles such as boulders along the line of that trench. The paper considers the development of the LUCIE programme since its inception and sets out in terms of the machine kinematics the evolution and development of the real-time control strategy from an implementation on a one-fifth scale model of a back-hoe arm to a full working system on a JCB801 360° tracked excavator.

    Notes: Abstract Computers have become the main tool used in Ground Water Quality Management (GWQM). Computer software has been developed to encapsulate, process and present information on groundwater pollution problems. Continuing demands for more efficient handling of information have resulted in increasing integration of the software into Decision Support Systems (DSSs). Encapsulation and integration of both quantitative (numerical) and qualitative (knowledge) information are required to support decision-making processes. A review of current achievements in the software integration and especially in knowledge encapsulation reveals no clear developing directions (research lines) in these fields. Attention must be therefore directed to: (1) the main GWQM tasks, seen in the light of knowledge encapsulation, and (2) postulates and techniques of Artificial Intelligence (AI) related to knowledge encapsulation and DSS development. The case-specific nature of groundwater pollution problems and a lack of formalised expertise in GWQM are the main difficulties in development of knowledge-containing systems. Work on the taxonomy of GWQM tasks and related knowledge is recommended to enable broader application of AI in knowledge encapsulation, as well as in development of DSSs for GWQM as a whole.

    Notes: Abstract Juris-Data is one of the largest case-study base in France. The case studies are indexed by legal classification elaborated by the Juris-Data Group. Knowledge engineering was used to design an intelligent interface for information retrieval based on this classification. The aim of the system is to help users find the case-study which is the most relevant to their own. The approach is potentially very useful, but for standardising it for other legal document bases it is necessary to extract a legal classification of the primary documents. Thus, a methodology for the construction of these classifications was designed together with a framework for index construction. The project led to the implementation of a Legal Case Studies Engineering Framework based on the accumulated experimentation and the methodologies designed. It consists of a set of computerised tools which support the life-cycle of the legal document from their processing by legal experts to their consultation by clients.

    Notes: Abstract The first phase of the Intelligent Labelling Explorer project has built the ILEX-1.1 system, which uses artificial intelligence technology to generate descriptions of objects displayed in a museum gallery. Each description appears on a World Wide Web page, and the user can move from page to page, viewing the objects in any order, mimicking the experience of someone walking through the museum. Crucially, these descriptions aren't simply retrieved from a storage space, but are generated on demand by combining canned text with fully generated text in a coherent way. This use of dynamic hypertext allows ILEX-1.1 to generate descriptions appropriate to the expertise level of the user and to refer back to objects the user has already seen or to suggest objects the user might be interested in based on what objects they've chosen to look at so far. This paper discusses the advantages of dynamic hypertext and issues related to generating a text that hangs together well.

    Notes: Abstract Although Berman and Hafner [Berman 1989, pp. 928–938] presented the possibility to adapt the model of reasoning of development of an expert system for medical diagnosis to the reasoning of a judge when he/she sentences criminals does not resemble the reasoning found in the decisions of physicians, mathematicians or statisticians. When a lawyer reasons, he/she not only looks for the solution of a case; he/she simultaneously looks for the bases on which his/her reasoning can rest [Galindo 1992, pp. 363–367]. That is to say, he/she not only needs to find the solution but moreover he/she has to find the references (laws, jurisprudence and bibliography) that allow him/her to argue the solution. In many cases, computer solutions to these reasoning processes have been made in a separated way: the solution to the cases using expert systems, and the search of documentation using information retrieval systems. This paper presents the ARPO-2 prototype, a solution integrating the two aspects of legal reasoning: an expert system which is able to simultaneously find the solution to a problem and to give the necessary references so that the lawyer argues the solution. The subject on which the prototype solves problems is the breach of building contracts. In this paper, we describe the process of development of an expert system for solving, justification and documentation of ‘breach of contracts’, giving details on the way how the objects that intervene in the case were defined as well as on the reasoning followed.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we study the problem of finding a collision-free path for a mobile robot which possesses manipulators. The task of the robot is to carry a polygonal object from a starting point to a destination point in a possibly culttered environment. In most of the existing research on robot path planning, a mobile robot is approximated by a fixed shape, i.e., a circle or a polygon. In our task planner, the robot is allowed to change configurations for avoiding collision. This path planner operates using two algorithms: the collision-free feasible configuration finding algorithm and the collision-free path finding algorithm. The collision-free feasible configuration finding algorithm finds all collision-free feasible configurations for the robot when the position of the carried object is given. The collision-free path finding algorithm generates some candidate paths first and then uses a graph search method to find a collision-free path from all the collision-free feasible configurations along the candidate paths. The proposed algorithms can deal with a cluttered environment and is guaranteed to find a solution if one exists.

    Notes: Abstract Two of the most difficult problems in Artificial Intelligence are processing visual scenes and processing natural languages. There has been a large amount of research in each of these fields but little on their integration. This is surprising given the potential importance of integrated systems, not only for understanding human cognition but also for the range of practical applications that will be enabled. We review previous work and provide an overview of our own work. We focus upon the medical application of reconstructing complicated cerebral blood vessel structures and associated pathologies from images and medical reports. This gives our work a clear and significant practical aim. We show how the ostensibly disparate technologies can be married using a single knowledge representation. Previous attempts at reconstruction have used images alone and no satisfactory solution exists.     Notes: Abstract Gendlin proposes experiential concepts as bridges between phenomenology and logical formulation. His method moves back and forth, aiming to increase both natural understanding and logical formulation. On thesubjective side, the concepts requiredirect reference tofelt orimplicit meaning. There is no equivalence between this and the logical side. Rather, in logical “explication”, the implicit iscarried forward, a relation shown by many functions. The subjective is no inner parallel. It performsspecific functions in language. Once these are located, they also lead to developments on the formulated side. To show some of this, Gendlin modifies Lakoff and Johnson's theory of metaphor, and expands it into a theory of all language use. He denies that a metaphor consists of a pattern or image, shared by two situations. There is only one situation — the metaphoric one. The original situation is actually a family of many uses (in the Wittgensteinian sense). As in all speech, a word makes sense only as its use-family “crosses” with an actual situation in the actual spot in a sentence. Subjectively, a metaphor means this crossing. From it, long chains of new similarities and differences can be generated. Ways to study the functions and features of thiscrossing are proposed.

    Notes: Abstract The introduction of electronic anaesthesia documentation systems was attempted as early as in 1979, although their efficient application has become reality only in the past few years. Today, documentation technology is offered by most of the monitor manufacturers and new systems are being developed by various working groups. The advantages of the electronic protocol are apparent: Continuous high quality documentation, comparability of data due to the availability of a anaesthesia data bank, reduction of the workload of the anaesthesia staff and availability of new additional information. Disadvantages of the electronic protocol have also been discussed. Typically, by going through the process of entering data on the course of the anaesthetic procedure on the protocol sheet, the information is mentally absorbed and evaluated by the anaesthetist. This mental processing of information may, however, be missing when the data are recorded fully automatically — without active involvement on the part of the anaesthetist. It seems that electronic anaesthesia protocols will be required in the near future. The advantages of accurate documentation and quality control in the presence of careful planning will outweigh cost considerations. However, at this time, almost none of the commercially available systems have matured to a point where their purchase can be recommended without reservation. There is still a lack of standards for the subsequent exchange of data and a solution to a number of ergonomic problems still remains to be found.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a method of representing planning domains in the Boyer-Moore logic so that we can prove mechanically whether a strategy solves a problem. Current approaches require explicit frame axioms and state constraints to be included as part of a domain specification and use a programming language for expressing strategies. These make it difficult to specify domains and verify plans efficiently. Our method avoids explicit frame axioms, since domains are specified by programming an interpreter for sequences of actions in the Boyer-Moore logic. Strategies are represented as ‘planners’, Lisp programs that take an initial state and other arguments as input and return a sequence of actions that, when executed in the given initial state, will bring about a goal state. Mechanical verification of a strategy is accomplished by proving that the corresponding planner solves all instances of the given problem. We illustrate our approach by verifying strategies in some variations of the blocks world.

    Notes: Abstract One of the most difficult issues in many real-life decisionmaking problems is how to estimate the pertinent data. An approach which uses pairwise comparisons was proposed by Saaty and is widely accepted as an effective way of determining these data. Suppose that two matrices with pairwise comparisons are available. Furthermore, suppose that there is an overlapping of the elements compared in these two matrices. The problem examined in this paper is how to combine the comparisons of the two matrices in order to derive the priorities of the elements considered in both matrices. A simple approach and a linear programming approach are formulated and analyzed in solving this problem. Computational results suggest that the LP approach, under certain conditions, is an effective way for dealing with this problem. The proposed approach is of critical importance because it can also result in a reduction of the total required number of comparisons.

    Notes: Abstract An intelligent tutoring system customizes its presentation of knowledge to the individual needs of each student based on a model of the student. Student models are more complex than other user models because the student is likely to have misconceptions. We have addressed several difficult issues in reasoning about a student's knowledge and skills within a real-time simulation-based training system. Our conceptual framework enables important aspects of the tutor's reasoning to be based upon simple, comprehensible representations that are the basis for a Student Centered Curriculum. We have built a system for teaching cardiac resuscitation techniques in which the decisions abouthow to teach are separated from the decisions aboutwhat to teach. The training context (i.e., choice of topics) is changed based on a tight interaction between student modeling techniques and simulation management. Although complex student models are still required to support detailed reasoning about how to teach, we argue that the decision about what to teach can be adequately supported by qualitatively simpler techniques, such as overlay models. This system was evaluated in formative studies involving medical school faculty and students. Construction of the student model involves monitoring student actions during a simulation and evaluating these actions in comparison with an expert model encoded as a multi-agent plan. The plan recognition techniques used in this system are novel and allow the expert knowledge to be expressed in a form that is natural for domain experts.

These primitives identify necessary domain knowledge and guide users to propose significant components, constraints, and fix methods into the dependency model.mwKAT also invokes knowledge verification and validation primitives to verify the completeness, consistency, compilability, and correctness of the intermediate knowledge base.
