    Notes: More than a decade has passed since the International Panel on Climatic Change began to study (in depth) the possibility that the global climate was changing. Increasing attention is also being paid to the impact of such changes on society in general, and on the planning and management of water resources. Not least among the water resources planning problems is the estimation of the changes which might occur in public water-supply demands. Such changes are notoriously difficult to evaluate, particularly in the UK where most domestic premises remain un-metered. Elsewhere, econometric models involving climatic parameters as independent variables have had some success, but a recent application of this approach in the UK was unable to identify particular parameters which had a consistent influence over the summer period. This lack of success might be partly caused by the public reaction to summer conditions being a complex function of several parameters, such as duration of sunshine, temperature and rainfall. This complexity has already been recognised by climatologists, who have devised forms of summer indices involving weighted combinations of climatic variables to determine how ‘good’ or ‘bad’ a particular period might be perceived by the general public. The use of one such summer index to explain the variations in an index of demand for public water supply in the London supply area has shown that simple and consistent relationships can be derived. Application of these relationships to scenarios of changes in temperature, sunshine duration and rainfall totals for the year 2050 shows an increase of 0.6- 2.9 index points in water-supply demand over the 1950-1990 period average.

    Notes: We report the observation of a giant magnetothermopower (GMT), giant magnetoresistance (GMR), and on magnetization measurements in Co/Cu[111] superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The maximum value of the GMT (at room temperature) was 14% for a Cu thickness of 9 A(ring) and the maximum GMR (at 4.2 K) was −26% at 7 A(ring) of Cu. Oscillations in the remnant magnetization and the saturation field as a function of Cu thickness with a period of about 10 A(ring) were observed. However, there were no oscillations in the GMT or the GMR. The maximum values of both the GMT and GMR are associated with saturation fields in excess of 40 kOe and with small remnant magnetizations. These results are consistent with the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling.

    Notes: This paper presents laser velocimetry measurements of the streamwise component of mean velocities and turbulence intensities measured downstream from the exit plane of porous ceramic foams through which air is flowed. The recent development and commercial availability of porous ceramic foams has lead to their application in many fields. Their uses have extended to combustion, high-temperature fluid filtering, biotechnology, and as support matrix for catalysts. These applications have created an interest in their pore scale fluid mechanics, both within the porous matrix and along surfaces open to flow. One emerging application is porous ceramic burners which combust liquid or gaseous fuels within the pore matrix or along the surface of the ceramic. The ceramic foams have pore sizes ranging from 4 to 12 pores per cm (ppcm) and porosities of 85%. Mean velocities between 0.3 and 1.5 m/s were examined. Radial distributions of mean velocities show a jet-like structure through the pores, with local mean velocities reaching maximum values over two times the area mean velocity. Negative mean velocities were often observed between pores, suggesting that recirculation zones are present above the web-like struts surrounding the pores. Levels of turbulence intensities normalized by the area mean velocity ranged from 0.05 to 0.6 for the various flow rates and pore sizes. Turbulence intensities were found to increase with increasing pore size for a given flow rate.

    Notes: The Government's intention to abolish the rateable value system has made it urgent for the water industry to develop an alternative method of charging for its domestic customers. Metering is one option, and a description is given of the national programme of metering trials. These trials will provide better information on which to base future charging and metering decisions.One area of 53 000 properties and eleven smaller areas of 1000 properties will be included in the trials. The paper covers their design and objectives and the location of the selected sites. The various metering systems are described including the meters, the installation location, the reading and billing systems and the metered tariffs to be used.

    Notes: WHEN THE Component Method is applied to produce a forecast of future water demand, particular attention must be paid to the unmeasured consumption. This component consists largely of domestic water demand and takes into account the major water uses within the home. A knowledge is therefore required of the ownership of water-using appliances, the volumes of water involved and the frequency of use. These data are best obtained by the metering of individual households, supplemented by questionnaire surveys and the completion of diaries for each major element of water use.Such a survey was carried out by South West Water over a 13-month period during 1977-78. Subsequent updating, which has included further surveys of appliance ownership in the original sample of households and of the capacities of individual appliances, has shown that domestic per capita consumption has increased from 113.4 1/hd/d in 1977 to 131.6 1/hd/d in 1985.

    Notes: Abstract The plasma plume generated by a new type of high energy igniter known as the railplug is examined. The railplug is a miniaturized railgun that has the potential for improving ignition characteristics of combustible mixtures in engines. The objective of the study is to gain an understanding of the characteristics of the plasma created by a transparent railplug and to validate a multidimensional computer simulation of the plasma and shock fronts. The nature of the plume emitted by the railplug was examined for three levels of electrical energy while firing into air at a pressure of 1 atm. The computer model is to be used to predict trends in railplug performance for various railplug designs, energies, and ambient conditions. The velocity of the plasma movement inside a transparent railplug was measured, as well as the velocity of the plume ejected from the cavity. A shock is produced at the initiation point of the arc and propagates down the cavity, eventually exiting the plug. The velocity of the shock was both measured experimentally and simulated by the model. The computer simulation produces a mushroom-shaped plasma plume at the railplug exit similar to that observed in the shadowgraph photos. The simulation also reproduced the toroidal circulation observed at the plug exit in the shadowgraphs, the radial expansion, and the penetration depth of the plume. The trend of linearly increasing plasma kinetic energy with stored electrical energy predicted by the simulation was verified by shadowgraph photos. The agreement between the experiments and the simulations suggests that the multidimensional model holds promise as a predictive design tool.

    Notes: Abstract Transverse dispersion is examined in short ceramic foams for a variety of pore sizes and flow rates. Experiments were performed with a localized smoke source as a tracer and a coflow of air. Digital images were taken of the resulting dispersion patterns, and an approximate transverse dispersion coefficient was determined. A precise dispersion coefficient cannot be defined at these high Peclet numbers (106–108) because the dispersion becomes non-Fickian. Nevertheless, the approximate coefficients are shown to be consistent with the values obtained by other researchers for lower Peclet numbers and longer porous media.
