Description: During his stay in Java Mr. Edward Jacobson collected from 1909 to 1911 a small number of terrestrial Amphipoda which he has been good enough to hand over to me for identification. They all prove to belong to Orchestia parvispinosa, a species described from Java by Max Weber in 1892; Weber however had only female specimens and the male has remained unknown all these years. Mr. Jacobson’s collection consists nearly all of females, as is usually the case with collections of terrestrial Amphipoda, but fortunately it contains one male which, though apparently not fully mature, is sufficiently developed to give a general idea of its chief characteristics. I therefore give a brief description of its gnathopoda and add one or two items of additional information about the species and its relationship to allied species.

Description: As to the increase of the collection of birds observed in the Netherlands, the past twelve months have been important; during that lapse of time the collection is augmented with 594 skins and 335 eggs in clutches. I have to mention the following gentlemen, who presented us with indigenous birds, in the first place H. R. H. Prince Hendrik, and further: D. Bakker, N. Balt, W. H. de Beaufort, F. E. Blaauw, J. Boonstra, F. K. Baron van Dedem, R. van Eecke, L. Baron van Heeckeren tot Walien, Jhr. W. C. van Heurn, P. J. van Houten, C. J. van der Klaauw, A. Kohlbeck, E. Loeb, Mr. H. A. Lorentz, A. A fine example of Dendrocopos medius (L.), a female, shot at Heino, province Overijssel, 5 September 1908, was given to us in free loan by Mr. F. K. Baron van Dedem; this species was not yet represented in our collection of native birds. Of another species, also not yet represented in the collection, the aquatic warbler, Calamodus aquatica (Gmelin), we received a fine series of 30 examples from one of our lighthouses.

Since then I received from him another collection from the same locality (preserved in the Leyden Museum), containing also a few specimens collected by Mr. MAC GILLAVRY at Baujuwangi (East-Java) and by Mr. de BUSSY at Deli (Sumatra). Description: In 1907 Mr. Caesar R. Boettger 1) called attention to the fact that this species, an inhabitant of the North-American seas, since the last decennium of past century is spreading on the European coast. In Europe it was found first in England at Cricksea on the river Crouch, in July 1890 2), and on the Lincolnshire coast 3). The following years brought further references about the occurrence of Petricola pholadiformis on the English coast 4). At present the localities where it is found, stretch from Shellness, near Sandwich, Kent, in the south, to Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, in the north. Mr. Loppens 5) was the first to notice this species on the continent; he found it near Nieuwpoort on the coast of Belgium, in 1899. Very soon afterwards other localities were known where Petricola pholadiformis occurred on the Belgian coast 1), and also at Dunkerque 2) in France. In June 1906 Miss H. Icke (presently Mrs. Martin—Icke) found this species on the Dutch coast near Noordwijk 3). In the same year it was noticed by Mr. Caesar R. Boettger 4), by Mr. E. Wolf 4) and by the Rev. Ricklefs 5) on different points near the German coast, from the Dutch till the Danish frontier. Mr. Julius Pfeffer 6) mentioned the occurrence near Hooge, a small North Frisian island, south of Föhr, and stated the fact that this species never occurred there before 1906. Finally Mr. H. Schlesch 7) obtained it in 1907 from Fanö and Manö, two Danish islands. Seeing thus, that Petricola pholadiformis has a rather wide distribution on the North-Sea-coast, and that it is found rather abundantly near our frontiers, I expected a priori that Mrs. Martin’s statement should not remain the only one. When examining the collections of shells from our country, acquired by the „Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie” during the last years, I actually found several specimens of Petricola pholadiformis from various localities along the coast. They are the following: Domburg, isle of Walcheren, 1905, Mr. W. C. van Heurn; 1912, Mr. J. H. Vernhout. Renesse, isle of Schouwen, 1911, Mrs. H. Martin—Icke.

Description: Le genre Aphanocephalus Woll. (Ent. Monthl. Mag.

Description: The Stagbeetle described in the following lines and belonging to the genus Metopodontus of the subfamily Cladognathinae is very interesting by having five pubescent leaflets in the clava of the antennae. In all other known species of this subfamily the number of these leaflets is three. This is, as far as I know, the second example of an inconstant number of leaflets in the species of one and the same genus of the Lucanidae Lucanus and Metopodontus). In coloration as well as in general form the new species, for which I propose the specific title spectabilis, resembles Metopodontus cinctus Montr.

Description: The differences between these two subspecies of the genus Brassolis are well indicated as to the males, but the females are insufficiently distinguished. In „Das Tierreich”, 25ste Lieferung, Brassolidae, pag. 11, the author, Stichel, has said that the females of both subspecies are identical. With the aid of the material in the Leyden Museum I yet will try to separate the females also. At the „International Colonial Exposition” of 1883 at Amsterdam were five males and two females of Brassolis sophorae lurida, captured in Surinam at the same place and at the same date, which specimens are now in the Leyden Museum. The Entomological Collection of this Museum contains moreover four males and three females of the other subspecies, sophorae sophorae, likewise from Surinam, partly from the collection Rave, partly collected by VerHuell.

Description: JUNGHUHN was among the first to name foreign species of fungi. He made large collections in Java and published a paper that was finely illustrated, in 1839. If all of his types were destroyed many of his species would still live, for he gave good accounts of them and good figures of many of them. All of the figures that he cites were not published as it was his intention to continue the work, and he numbered his paper „Fasc. 1,” but no further paper were issued by him on the subject. Dr. GOETHART assures me that the originals of JUNGHUHN’S figures are not preserved in the museum at Leiden. However, there are at Leiden colored drawings of a large number of Javanese fungi, and they are the best I have ever seen of tropical fungi. The name of the author of these icones has been lost, but I think I have found evidence to trace them to ZIPPELIUS. Most of them are named as new species and it was evidently the intention to publish them, and it is unfortunate that they were not published as they were mostly „new species” at that time. Many of them have been named since. I hope to have more to say as to these icones in a future letter.

Description: In the early days the old Dutch botanists made many collections of fungi in Java and other Dutch colonies in the East. With the exception of JUNGHUHN, they were not published by the collectors, but were vaguely named and preserved in the museum at Leiden. In this museum are many old collections by KORTHALS, BLUME, ZIPPELIUS and JUNGHUHN in the East, and MIQUEL in Surinam, but very few of them have the collector’s name stated on the label. LÉVEILLÉ visited the museum about 1844 and when he went back to Paris he published forty-five “new species” that he had noted in the museum at Leiden. He did not endorse his names on any of the labels, but he cited the collectors, often inaccurately I believe, and the names or numbers that the specimens bore. I have worked the collection over and by means of these citations have been able to identify the larger part of the types. It is possible that another search might produce others that I have overlooked, but I went carefully into the matter and believe that very few of those I did not find will ever be found or at least will ever be identified. In my opinion LÉVEILLÉ did about the poorest work in naming species of any of the old namers, always excepting KALCHBRENNER. At that time but few foreign species had been named, but LÉVEILLÉ did not seem to know even these few. In addition he often based species on very inadequate material, little abortive or undeveloped specimens that should not have been named at all. Recently all the Javanese specimens have been sent to BRESADOLA and have been named by him. A number of LÉVEILLÉ’S “types” were thus correctly named, but in the renaming they lost their historical value, if LÉVEILLÉ’S work had any value.

Martin\xe2\x80\x94Icke) found this species on the Dutch coast near Noordwijk 3). In the same year it was noticed by Mr. Caesar R. Boettger 4), by Mr. E. Wolf 4) and by the Rev. Ricklefs 5) on different points near the German coast, from the Dutch till the Danish frontier. Mr. Julius Pfeffer 6) mentioned the occurrence near Hooge, a small North Frisian island, south of F\xc3\xb6hr, and stated the fact that this species never occurred there before 1906. Finally Mr. H. Schlesch 7) obtained it in 1907 from Fan\xc3\xb6 and Man\xc3\xb6, two Danish islands. Seeing thus, that Petricola pholadiformis has a rather wide distribution on the North-Sea-coast, and that it is found rather abundantly near our frontiers, I expected a priori that Mrs. Martin\xe2\x80\x99s statement should not remain the only one. When examining the collections of shells from our country, acquired by the \xe2\x80\x9eRijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie\xe2\x80\x9d during the last years, I actually found several specimens of Petricola pholadiformis from various localities along the coast. They are the following: Domburg, isle of Walcheren, 1905, Mr. W. C. van Heurn; 1912, Mr. J. H. Vernhout.\nRenesse, isle of Schouwen, 1911, Mrs. H. Martin\xe2\x80\x94Icke.

The Entomological Collection of this Museum contains moreover four males and three females of the other subspecies, sophorae sophorae, likewise from Surinam, partly from the collection Rave, partly collected by VerHuell.

Description: The work of the steamship \xc2\xbbSiboga\xe2\x80\x9d among the islands of the East Indian Archipelago resulted in the discovery of many new species of unstalked crinoids. In view of the large amount of work necessary in assembling and digesting the data accumulated on these, and especially on the species already known, it has seemed advisable to publish in advance preliminary diagnoses of the new forms in order to guard against possible anticipation.\nIn the present paper the new species belonging to the families ANTEDONIDAE and ATELECRINIDAE, including among them the most striking of those collected by the \xc2\xbbSiboga\xe2\x80\x9d, are considered. All of the new species will be described in greater detail and figured in the final memoir on these animals in the \xc2\xbbSiboga\xe2\x80\x9d series 1).

Description: Last year Mr. P. Buitendijk had the good fortune to obtain again an example of Aestrelata aterrima (Bonaparte), caught aboard ship at night in the Indian Ocean (lat. 10\xc2\xb052\'N., long 60\xc2\xb08\' E.) at December 11th 1911. This is the second example presented by him to our collection (cf. Notes Leyden Mus. XXXIII, 1910\xe2\x80\x94\xe2\x80\x9911, p. 113). It is a female in worn plumage, moulting wing- and tailfeathers, and having no whitish feathers on the lores and on the head like the first specimen. Mr. Buitendijk has noted the colour of the light parts of the feet in the live bird dull white; that of iris and bill black. I received the bird in rather fresh condition, as it had been preserved in the refrigerating-room of the steamer; the colour of the light parts of the feet was then whitish, with a faint rosy tinge near the heel-joint. Now the feet are dried and have changed colour; they are at present of a dark brownish flesh-colour, and somewhat resemble the feet of the bird, figured in Du Cane Godman\xe2\x80\x99s Monograph, in which plate the feet seem to have been coloured after the faded feet of the specimen in the Cambridge Museum.\nAs this is already the second specimen accidentally caught, this species likely is in our wintermonths of regular occurrence in the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean.

Description: Some time ago Mr. W. C. van Heurn, student at the Leyden University, presented a very large collection of shells, all of them found by himself in various localities of our country, to the Leyden Museum. Among them I discovered specimens of three species, not recorded as belonging to the Dutch fauna. 1. Lacuna divaricata Fabr. A few specimens, collected June 1909 on the coast of Texel. Mr. M. M. Schepman, the well-known conchologist, wrote to me this being only the second time he saw Dutch specimens.
