Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events. The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

Description: Narratives of Violence is a contribution to the ethical turn in literary studies. In the current context of systemic political violence unleashed in the wake of 9/11 and the global advance of capitalism and neoliberalism, literature constitutes a particularly timely device to raise awareness about injustice, the abuse of power, and the violation of human rights. Literature may also be helpful in order to face social challenges such as peaceful coexistence with immigrants and displaced people, and the settling of refugees. This book is an invitation to read a selection of narratives of violence anchored in different geopolitical realities, and located in historical contexts ranging from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. By adopting ethical criticism in order to tackle the dilemmas posed by these stories, we aim to contribute to the configuration of global imaginaries based on respect, recognition, and empathy, especially towards those who are most vulnerable. This collection offers critical readings of works of various genres, originally written in different languages. Authors discussed comprise Mrīrīda nʾait ʿAtiq (Morocco), Janina Hescheles (Poland), Eva Koch (Denmark), María Galindo (Bolivia) and Sonia Sánchez (Argentina), Najat El Hachmi (Morocco-Catalonia), Arundhati Roy (India), Leila Abdelrazaq (Palestine), and Yū Miri, Murata Sayaka, and Kawakami Mieko (Japan). The corpus includes biographical, autobiographical, testimonial, and fictional narratives, sometimes very close to documentary or life history. The works analysed in this collection portray experiences of violence and oppression caused by social, political, economic, and military conflicts. The novelty of this book lies in the challenge it poses to the Western-centric and patriarchal bias often found in similar collections of scholarly essays. Thus, the book focuses on female authors, seeking to give visibility and voice to women victims, generally forgotten in hegemonic cultural discourses.

Description: At the beginning of the 21st century, the role that the history of law should play in the training of jurists cannot be the same as the discipline played in the last century, hence the importance of reflecting on the scope that from now on the subjects of historical content should have in the different curricula in which the knowledge of law in its historical dimension has a place. The delimitation of the role to be played by historical education requires reflection on the three traditional dimensions of knowledge, the material, spatial and temporal dimensions. This is the reasoning that justified the first symposium of the Spanish Society of Law Historians.
    Description: Published

    Publication Date: 2024-03-29

Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events. The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

Description: The research that resulted in this book aimed to characterize the use of media in three elementary and secondary educational institutions in the cities of Cartago (Valle del Cauca), La Union (Nariño), Dosquebradas (Pereira), and Cartagena (Bolivar) through the construction of a knowledge map that would promote the exchange and articulated management of experiences and developments. The methodology used, integrated different ways of approaching the reality of educational dynamics and actors that generate educational-communicative and social processes to strengthen their training practices. In this line, each experience is consolidated in what are called Media Biographies, product of the experiences, events, times, and efforts each actor has deposited in these processes and that are articulated from different voices; the actors, the researcher when conducted the field work, and later the authors of this document. The research also illustrates a crucial period for educational history at the global level; the health emergency of COVID-19, which was integrated into the dynamics and expanded the ranges of analysis and personal and professional reflection, insofar two experiences were developed in this period, and managed to collect the emotions, the complexity, but also the dynamics to overcome the difficulties. The results show a map that presents different evolving coordinates of routes already established to qualify future inquiry exercises that become beacons on which educational institutions, teachers, and students can replicate, retake, or streamline these experiences and from there, contribute to the quality of education in the country.

Description: The Faculty of Philosophy and Letters in Madrid commissioned Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo and Nicolás Salmerón to write a report on the royal decrees that reduced university staffing levels, given by virtue of the authorisations granted by the Budget Law of 30 June 1892. The text of the opinion is reproduced together with some extracts from a well-known book by the professor from the Central University (Historia de los heterodoxos españoles) which help to understand the context of the message. It thus serves to document the extent of an opinion, which is not confined to a single group - the Krausist group - but is shared by other sectors that conceive of the university as something more than an administrative office. The key ideas are: the immobility of the teaching staff; an ideal of family life geared towards scientific research; the demand for autonomy - freedom of action - for the university body; the conception of the university as the representative of national culture; the promotion of scientific and not only professional faculties; the intervention of the university in the choice of its staff; the elimination of course exams... In short, it rejected "the trampling importation of the French centralist regime" and called for emancipation from excessive official tutelage.

Description: The present volume collects most of the contributions to the plenary sessions held at the 24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies, and incisively reflects the ever increasing broadening of the very concept of ‘Byzantine Studies’. Indeed, a particularly salient characteristic of the papers presented here is their strong focus on interdisciplinarity and their breadth of scope, both in terms of methodology and content. The cross-pollination between different fields of Byzantine Studies is also a major point of the volume. Archaeology and art history have pride of place; it is especially in archaeological papers that one can grasp the vital importance of the interaction with the so-called hard sciences and with new technologies for contemporary research. This relevance of science and technology for archaeology, however, also applies to, and have significant repercussions in, historical studies, where – for example – the study of climate change or the application of specific software to network studies are producing a major renewal of knowledge. In more traditional subject fields, like literary, political, and intellectual history, the contributions to the present volume offer some important reflections on the connection between Byzantium and other cultures and peoples through the intermediary of texts, stories, diplomacy, trade, and war.

Description: This work by Sebastián Carreño is part of the collective effort that accounts for the emergence of a new generation of professionals who, under the guidance of the institutional efforts developed, for example, by the Universidad Austral and the University of Santiago de Chile, have sought to enhance the deployment of academic research inserted into the demands and urgencies of civil society. I cannot fail to point out this differentiating element as one of the main features of this task, since the work carried out by Carreño was a fundamental contribution for the State to protect, as a National Monument, the premises of the Investigative Police barracks. located at Egaña N°60, in the city of Puerto Montt

Description: Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels by human activity, reinforce the greenhouse effect and cause climate disruption. While public awareness of this global problem is growing, ocean acidification, described as "the other CO2 problem", is still largely unknown. This book answers ten key questions on the biogeochemical foundations of acidification, past, current and future trends, the impact on marine organisms and on humans, and finally, ways to remedy the situation. It draws its answers from fields as diverse as biogeochemistry, ecology, physiology, evolution, aquaculture and fisheries, economics and sociology.

Description: A 16th Century French Version of Virgil’s Aeneid In 1541, the author and translator known under the name Hélisenne de Crenne published her fourth and last work, a prose adaptation of the first four books of Virgil’s epos the Aeneid. The work was printed by Denys Janot and dedicated to king Francis I. The themes of Crenne’s Aeneid are in many ways similar to the themes present in her earlier works, works of which she was the original author. Crenne shows a vivid interest in love and its consequences in all her works ; moreover, she has a sharp focus on feelings. All this becomes crystal clear in her adaptation of Virgil ; a work which we consider as the keystone to her whole production. It seems that Crenne tried to make Virgil's work accessible and interesting to a broad audience through her adaptations of Virgil. Nonetheless, in contrast to her earlier works, her version of the Aeneid did not meet with any success among its contemporaries. The present volume is the first edition of the whole text since the first edition appeared. Besides Crenne’s Aeneid, this volume contains an extensive introduction where the work is presented : Crenne’s authorship ; translation in the 16th century ; Crenne’s technique and style ; the three extant copies of the printed edition ; her purposes with the edition. Moreover, our volume contains a commentary where each chapter is compared with the texts of Virgil and of Octovien de Saint-Gelais, the earlier French translator who inspired Crenne the most. Finally, there is a glossary. We have also reproduced the woodcuts from the original edition and tried to recreate a similar layout.

Description: Thinking about violence is the philosophical reason expressed in the research condensed in this book. Violence, as the establishment of evil in history, is the unsolvable expression of the inertia and chaos crossing societies, particularly those of today. From which philosophical horizon do we seek to frame the present analysis of violence? It is not easy to determine a single view of the problem because from the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes to the Martinique thinker Frantz Fanon referred to the political power and social segregation exercised by violence. We will go to the mimetic theory proposed by the French thinker, René Girard (1923-2005) in the interest of delimitation. We believe that this philosophical approach allows us to think about violence in the dynamic terms of difference and sameness. The mimetic theory explains the origin of violence in direct relation to the human desire for another (otherness) that seeks to be imitated to the point of its ontological appropriation. Desire mimics another way of desiring, which explains the chain reaction of a violent appropriation that goes through gestures, ways of being, objects, persons, etc. Difference, therefore, is one of the elements integrating the analysis of violence from the mimetic desire, since it is a way of perceiving that human life in social terms exists due to the existence of the other, who is the referent of imitation and at the same time of rivalry. In this order of ideas, the study of violence proposed in this research intertwines the concepts of difference, imitation, otherness, and rivalry.

Description: Since antiquity, knowledge has often been juxtaposed with opinion. Whereas opinion commonly refers to subjective perceptions and viewpoints, knowledge is typically intended to represent objective and verifiable propositions. On this view, knowledge per se claims a universal dimension in that it pretends to be approvable through the reason of everyone, everywhere. This universal aspect of the concept of knowledge stands in marked contrast to cultures of local knowledge, where the generation of knowledge is dependent on specific times and places. These divergent aspects came into conflict when Indigenous knowledge was contested by Europeans and likewise, Indigenous challenges to European knowledge occurred. Based on religious, linguistic, demographic, and cultural disparities, knowledge operative in one context was adapted, manipulated, reframed, or dismissed as spurious or heretical in another framework. This book focuses on historical examples of Indigenous knowledge from 1492 until circa 1800, with contributions from the fields of history, art history, geography, anthropology, and archaeology.

Description: Engativá is one of the 21 political-administrative divisions of the Capital District of Bogotá (Colombia), and is distinguished by its urban composition, a high population density and its soils dedicated mainly to residential, commercial and industrial use. However, this territory is also characterized by the presence of ecosystems rich in biodiversity that are threatened by factors associated with urbanization and the effects of climate change. In this locality there are three urban wetlands of RAMSAR category: Juan Amarillo, Jaboque and Santa María del Lago, in addition, in terms of water management, by the administrative jurisdiction of Engativá is a portion of land of the basins of the Bogotá River and the Salitre River. On the other hand, among the green areas that make up the urban fabric, such as neighborhood parks, complementary conservation areas such as the botanical garden and La Florida Regional Park stand out. In relation to these urban ecosystems, which are part of the Main Ecological Structure of the Capital District and its environmental region, this book contains an analysis of each of these components, highlighting elements of their historical trajectory, specialized legal regulations and a description of specific challenges. One of the purposes of the systematization of information collected here is to make evident the nuances of the environmental urban planning managed in the administrative jurisdiction of Engativá: a place where urban vitality and nature converge in a fragile balance, marked by a complex trajectory of environmental degradation and adoption of the inhabitants to the territory.

The book “Water Geopolitics and Heartland Blue” seeks to answer some doubts that have arisen about how this vital element will be addressed by states that, in one way or another, share surface, underground and even frozen water basins. For this purpose, two specific cases were selected, the Guaraní Aquifer and Patagonia, which within the southern cone of America correspond to two of the largest reserves that currently exist and for this, the author seeks to analyze the actions of the countries involved. in them: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay in the Guaraní Aquifer; Chile and Argentina in Patagonia, between the years 1990 – 2012.

Description: This volume gathers Alessandro De Francesco’s essays and theoretical writings produced from 2015 to 2022. It follows the first volume Continuum: Writings on Poetry as Artistic Practice, reuniting essays written between 2007 and 2015. The title of this new volume could only be Continuum 2, given that the underlying concept remains the same: to testify to the seamless continuity of the author’s commitment to poetry and art over the years, and to reaffirm at the same time, on a theoretical level, a model of creation and thinking as a continuous flow, not discretized, not quantized, but organic, liquid, without end or beginning; a kind of linguistic translation of the space-time in which every text, like every other object, is necessarily immersed. Continuum 2 is a trilingual book, containing writings in English, French, and Italian, and it is particularly focused on two lines of inquiry: the author’s ongoing meditation on the poetic practice, and the first steps of his new investigation into seventeenth-century art, poetry, and forms of thought.

Description: Travel experienced a high point in the interwar period with the beginning of mass tourism in Spain. While Spanish intellectuals visited Europe or America to define their identity and their position in the cultural field, the Spain of the Second Republic attracted many writers, scientists and artists from other countries, who found here one of the great cultural epicenters, but also a country where traditions and ways of life that resisted the push of modern life survived. The Civil War confirmed the idea that the Spanish landscape was the stage where the future of the world was beginning to be decided, and many European and American intellectuals came here in those years, while Renau began the evacuation of the Spanish artistic treasure to protect it from fascist barbarism. This book analyzes the vision of Spain and the world derived from the travels of Walter Benjamin, Nancy Cunard, Walter Starkie, Ortiz Echagüe, Mª Teresa León, Concha Méndez, Mijail Koltsov or the collaborators of the travel magazine Oasis -directed by the engineers Vicente Olmo and Silverio de la Torre-, but also the experience of the inner journey of many of them and the influence of those cultural experiences.
