Description / Table of Contents: Very Long Baseline Inferometry (VLBI) can be divided into two main areas of application. The first is geodesy which is covered in detail in this work, and astrometry, or radio astronomy, which receives briefer treatment.VLBI is an acronym for Very Long Baseline Inferometry, and can be roughly divided into two areas of application. The first area is in geodesy, which is covered in considerable detail in this book. The second area is in astrometry, or radio astronomy, which is only briefly treated in the book. Many people probably relate geodesy and land surveying more with geology and geography than with space-based measuring techniques; and at least through the first half of the 20th century, geodesy was largely based on knowledge in these fields. Surveyors were generally considered as technicians or craftsmen. Modern GPS (global positioning systems) is probably best known for its use in automobile navigation, but such space-based measuring systems have made tremendous advances in the field of geodesy as well. The most notable results obtained by VLBI so far has been the global-scale measuring of the movements of the tectonic plates which cover the surface of the earth. Details of this achievement are discussed in the book, but the primary focus of the material covered here remains an investigation of how VLBI can conduct these measurements with such high level of precision. The book also explains how various aspects of system hardware, software and data analysis techniques can be effectively combined to yield a measurement accuracy that is four orders in magnitude better than conventional surveying techniques. VLBI requires knowledge in many areas of science and engineering.

Description / Table of Contents: On June 23, 2001, the region of southern Peru and northern Chile was shaken by a Mw 8.4 earthquake, arguably the largest worldwide since 1965. Approximately 80 people were killed and 70 missing and presumed dead. In all, the earthquake affected more than 200,000 people. It was the result of thrust faulting on the boundary between the Nazca and South American plates. Structural damage was concentrated on adobe houses and historical constructions, but a significant number of engineered structures were damaged, mostly attributable to short–column effects. There was widespread damage to the highway system, and a destructive tsunami caused significant damage. This issue is a product of the combined efforts of several reconnaissance teams. Other topics covered include seismicity, ground motion and site response, ground failure, geotechnical effects; lifelines, and societal impacts.

Description / Table of Contents: An analysis is made of the time required to build up an ice-age ice sheet and of the time required to destroy such an ice sheet. The calculations are based on the approximation that the theory of perfect plasticity is valid. It is concluded that the time required to eliminate it. If it is assumed that the accumulation rate of an ice-age ice sheet lies of a large ic sheet is of the order of 15.000 to 30.00 years. Ablation rates of 1 to 2 meters/year lead to shrinkage times of the order of 2000 to 4000 years, provided ablation occurs over an appreciable area of the ice sheet.

Washington, D.C. : George Washington University
Description / Table of Contents: This handbook is for any educator teaching a topic that includes data analysis or computation in order to support learning. It is not just for educators teaching courses in engineering or science, but also data journalism, business and quantitative economics, data-based decision sciences and policy, quantitative health sciences, and digital humanities. It aims to provide an entry point, and a broad overview of Jupyter in education. Whether you are already using Jupyter to teach, you have found learning materials built on Jupyter that piqued your curiosity, or have never heard of Jupyter, the material in this open book can empower you to use this technology in your teaching. Project Jupyter is a broad collaboration that develops open-source tools for interactive and exploratory computing. The tools include: over 100 computer languages (with a focus on Python), the Jupyter Notebook, JupyterHub, and an ecosystem of extensions contributed by a large community. The Jupyter Notebook has exploded in popularity since late 2014, fueled by its adoption as the favorite environment for doing data science. It has also grown as a platform to use in the classroom, to develop teaching materials, to share lessons and tutorials, and to create computational stories. Notebooks are documents containing text narratives with images and math, combined with executable code (many languages are supported) and the output of that code. This marriage of content and code makes for a powerful new form of data-based communication. Educators everywhere are adopting Jupyter for teaching. Educators newly adopting Jupyter can be overwhelmed by having to navigate the ecosystem of tools and content. They could study many examples, or consume a myriad of blog posts and videos of talks to distill the patterns of good practices and technical solutions to serve their students best. Several early adopters, having much experience to share, decided to begin collecting this know-how, and share open documentation about using Jupyter for teaching and learning. The result is this open book: a living document that captures the experiences of community members using Jupyter in education. The Jupyter Community Workshop in Washington, DC (November 2018) began that process, with a book sprint aimed at producing the first version of this handbook. The collaboratively written book consolidates explanations and examples covering key topics, including: what is Jupyter, how to try Jupyter, sharing notebooks with students, locally installing Jupyter, cloud offerings, finding example notebooks, writing lessons in Jupyter, making collections for a course, exporting to other formats with nbconvert, writing textbooks with Jupyter, using Binder and JupyterHub, making assignments and auto-grading, making online courses, teaching with Jupyter in the classroom, active learning and flipped learning pedagogies with Jupyter, and guiding learners to create their own content in Jupyter. This open handbook will grow to encompass all you need to know about Jupyter in teaching and learning.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: The law of sliding of ice over bedrock is generalized to include the effect of the presence of a longitudinal stress. The sliding velocity thus depends on both the shear stress acting at the bottom of an ice mass and the longitudinal stress. With this generalized law, it is still possible to make a one-dimensional analysis of the problem of calculating the profile of an ice cap or glacier, such as was carried out by Nye, and yet introduce the effect of large longitudinal stresses. As a result a profile can be calculated with two equations. One equation is applicable to the central region of an ice cap and the other equation (which was found by Nye) is valid elsewhere. By an appropriate joining of the profiles derived from these two equations, the complete profile of an ice cap can be obtained. From two sample calculations it is shown that, for a large ice cap, Nye's theory is valid practically everywhere, and there is no real need to bring in the modification. For a small ice cap, the modification to the profile is valid over an appreciable fraction of the total width of the ice cap. A very simple extension of the analysis of the ice cap profile allows for the effect of isostatic sinking of the bedrock surface under a large ice cap. (An initially flat bedrock surface was assumed. The analysis can be extended easily to allow for an arbitrarily shaped initial bedrock surface.)

Description / Table of Contents: Recent years have seen a phenomenal increase in bear attacks on humans. In Bear vs. Man, writer-photographer Brad Garfield chronicles many of these bear attacks, including dramatic photographs and stories told by victims who survived and companions of those who didn't. Along with these riveting stories, Garfield discusses bear behavior and instincts, and the various reasons for the increase in bear attacks. He instructs readers on the best advice and equipment that can protect a person. During an attack, offers tips on how to behave when traveling in bear country so as not to become a victim, and implores people to respect bears and their habitat. In the final chapter, the author imparts his knowledge of how to photograph bears in the wild while remaining safe and causing no harm to these awesome and powerful animals.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: A study of how age hardening affects the various mechanical properties of processed snow was made. A description of how the age hardening process is affected by the variables of density, temperature, grain size, and shape is given. An empirical equation relating creep rate to stress, age, and density was obtained. The study also shows that the various mechanical properties are related to age by an exponential function.

Description / Table of Contents: Translation of abstract: Using the example of the Igarsky district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the work examines the development of modern geocryological conditions of the northern taiga subzone of the Yenisei Arctic, caused by the development of the territory and climate warming in recent decades. The scale and degree of changes in geocryological conditions in areas of azonal development of permafrost rocks, as well as on the route of the high-voltage line Kureyskaya HPP - Norilsk in the section from the river, have been revealed. Bol. Kozharki to the hall. The Whitefish Khantaisk Reservoir is about 250 km long. The genesis and development of thermokarst lakes, the formation of modern permafrost on the bottom of a partially drained lake, frost cracking and accumulation of modern epigenetic re-veined underground ice on coarse peat bogs, changes in permafrost conditions along the routes of the “dead” railway and the future Vankor-Igarka oil pipeline are considered. The book is intended for permafrost scientists, geographers and civil engineers.
Description / Table of Contents:

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: A new method is presented for extracting more meaningful information from snow profile data which will simplify the study of the permeability of snow. Earlier analyses normally employed statistical methods to determine property variations with depth, with the line of mean values established by the method of least squares. The mean curves derived in this manner may not represent properly the true nature of the snow pack, or aid in understanding the dynamic processes which are in action. The new graphical methods described distinguish the separate effects of densification and thermal metamorphism on permeability, permitting future advances in the analysis. Profile data obtained in 1954 and 1960 are reanalyzed using the new techniques. For a natural polar pack under conditions when no melting occurs and the accumulation is assumed continuous, the following conclusions may be made: permeability for a given density of snow increases with depth and time except possibly near the surface or at depths below 30 m; the rate of permeability change with depth for given densities decreases in a calculable way relative to the density; and, mean permeability changes with depth in a complex manner.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: A new mechanism is described which explains the formation of moraines in the ablation areas of cold ice caps. The mechanism involves the freezing of water onto the bottom surface of an ice cap. This water comes from regions of the bottom surface where the combination of the geothermal heat and the heat produced by sliding of ice over the bed is sufficient to melt ice. A number of criticisms are made of the shear hypothesis, which has been advanced to explain moraines occurring on Baffin Island and near Thule, Greenland. It is concluded that this older hypothesis may be inadequate to account for these moraines. Although in theory the mechanism proposed here undoubtedly would lead to the formation of moraines, the existing field data are insufficient to prove conclusively that actual moraines have originated in this way.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary: Four ground patterns were investigated by means of trenches cut in the outwash near Thule, Greenland: circular and linear depressions in unsorted material, polygonal troughs in unsorted material, sorted circles, and irregular mounds and depressions of low relief formed in unsorted finer grained material. Correlation is made between surface pattern, grain size and structure of the active layer, and type and distribution of ground ice for the patterns investigated. Classification of the active layer as disturbed, slightly disturbed, and undisturbed is based on the condition of primary depositional bedding and the presence or absence of vertical sorting. Other features of the active layer, depending upon its type, are an accumulation of fines at the bottom of the active layer and on top of stones, and a siliceous calcareous evaporite on the under surface and clean washed coarser particles beneath the larger stones. Fabric analysis of four kinds of ground ice is presented: ice wedge, relict ice, ice mass, and ice lens, as well as analysis of the contact of ice wedges with relict and mass ice. Practical applications, based on the conclusions, are given for the selection of foundation sites and the location of non-frost-susceptible building materials. NOTE: This is a very large file.
