Description / Table of Contents: Very Long Baseline Inferometry (VLBI) can be divided into two main areas of application. The first is geodesy which is covered in detail in this work, and astrometry, or radio astronomy, which receives briefer treatment.VLBI is an acronym for Very Long Baseline Inferometry, and can be roughly divided into two areas of application. The first area is in geodesy, which is covered in considerable detail in this book. The second area is in astrometry, or radio astronomy, which is only briefly treated in the book. Many people probably relate geodesy and land surveying more with geology and geography than with space-based measuring techniques; and at least through the first half of the 20th century, geodesy was largely based on knowledge in these fields. Surveyors were generally considered as technicians or craftsmen. Modern GPS (global positioning systems) is probably best known for its use in automobile navigation, but such space-based measuring systems have made tremendous advances in the field of geodesy as well. The most notable results obtained by VLBI so far has been the global-scale measuring of the movements of the tectonic plates which cover the surface of the earth. Details of this achievement are discussed in the book, but the primary focus of the material covered here remains an investigation of how VLBI can conduct these measurements with such high level of precision. The book also explains how various aspects of system hardware, software and data analysis techniques can be effectively combined to yield a measurement accuracy that is four orders in magnitude better than conventional surveying techniques. VLBI requires knowledge in many areas of science and engineering.

Notes: Summary This paper deals with the stablec-server queue with renewal input. The service time distributions may be different for the various servers. They are however all probability distributions of phase type. It is shown that the stationary distribution of the queue length at arrivals has an exact geometric tail of rate η, 0〈η〈1. It is further shown that the stationary waiting time distribution at arrivals has an exact exponential tail of decay parameter ξ〉0. The quantities η and ξ may be evaluated together by an elementary algorithm. For both distributions, the multiplicative constants which arise in the asymptotic forms may be fully characterized. These constants are however difficult to compute in general.

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses reliability problems for local public communication networks such as cable television networks and the subscriber‐loops of telecommunication networks. They have tree‐shapes and expand continuously as new customers join. By introducing a simple model, it is shown that most principal reliability measures and cost measures for such networks can be described through the networks' graphical characteristic quantities. Extensive simulations show that the prior provision of trunk pipes and a suitable choice of the route selecting rule for new customers are effective in constructing a highly reliable network with low cost.

Notes: Summary Two unrelated cases with a paracentric inversion involving the long arm of a chromosome 3 were described. One case was a 29-year-old female with habitual spontaneous abortions. The karyotype was 46,XX,inv(3)(q25q27). The other case was a two year one month-old girl with growth and psychomotor retardation and multiple minor anomalies. She was found to have a recombinant chromosome 3 resulting from a paternal paracentric inversion. The karyotype of the patient was 46,XX, rec(3),dup(q26.3),inv(3)(q12q29)pat. The review of previously reported cases showed a considerable risk for live-born recombinants derived from parental paracentric inversions and the analysis of reproductive histories of inversion carriers suggested a possible contribution of this type of chromosome abnormalities to the cause of spontaneous abortions.

Notes: Summary A girl with mental retardation and multiple anomalies was shown to have ade novo interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 2(2q23.3→q24.2) by the use of high resolution banding technique. Review of the literature revealed that her clinical features resembled those of the previously reported cases with monosomy for the middle portion of 2q.

Notes: Summary A family in which an intrachromosomal shift, dir ins(9) (q22.1q31.3;q34.3), was segregating is described. A meiotic crossing over in the noninsertional loop of the carrier mother appeared to have resulted in the proband with a recombinant chromosome 9 duplicating the interstitial segment 9q22.1→q31.3. The study of ABO and AK1 phenotypes in the family showed that the proband was also a recombinant for the ABO locus. These results allowed us to assign the ABO locus to 9q31.3→qter on the cytogenetic basis.

Notes: Summary To provide a rationale for gene dosage study of esterase D (EsD) in a case with trisomy 13 where the determination of gene dosage effects is complicated owing to the dimeric structure of EsD and the diversity in catalytic activity between different EsD phenotypes, we assayed red cell EsD activities and analyzed its isozyme patterns using starch gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing in five cases with partial trisomy 13 (Cases 1, 2 and 3) and full trisomy 13 (Cases 4 and 5). From mean EsD activities of three common EsD phenotypes (1, 2-1 and 2) in a total of 197 normal individuals, theoretical values of the total EsD activity and activity ratios of respective EsD isozymes were calculated for each genotype expected in a trisomy case. The observed total EsD activities and activity ratios of respective EsD isozymes, which were measured on starch gel zymograms by a spectrophotometric scanner, in the five cases led us to assume that Case 1 had EsD genotype 1-1-1, Case 2 genotype 2-2-1 and the remaining three cases genotype 2-1-1. The interpretations in three cases (Cases 1, 2 and 4) were further justified by the study of EsD phenotype in their parents. Isoelectric focusing, on the other hand, was insufficient to distinguish between genotypes 2-2-1 and 2-2 or between genotypes 2-1-1 and 2-1. These results suggested that the assay of EsD activity along with analysis of EsD isozyme pattern by starch gel electrophoresis is practically the best procedure to identify EsD genotype in a trisomy individual. Furthermore, this procedure proved to be useful to ascertain the parental origin of nondisjunction in some cases with trisomy 13.

Notes: Summary In an attempt to determine the critical monosomic segment involved in 4p- syndrome, we studied the precise breakpoints of five inherited cases with the syndrome using a high-resolution banding technique. The 5 patients ranged in age at diagnosis from newborn to 15 months, 4 of whom could be clinically diagnosed as having 4p- syndrome. Common clinical features included mental retardation, low birth weight, growth failure, hypotonia, microcephaly, peculiar facial dysmorphia and ear malformations. Karyotypes of the 5 were 46,XX,−4,+der(4),t(4;21) (p16.1;q22.3)pat; 46,XX,−4,+der(4), inv ins(4;9)(p15.32p16.3;q34.3)pat; 46,XX,rec(4),del p,inv(4)(p15.2q35)pat; and 46,XX,−4,+der(4),t(4;18) (p15.2;p11.21)mat (two cases, related). The results suggested that monosomy for the proximal half of the 4p16 band is sufficient to express 4p-syndrome.

Notes: Three series of block copolymers, namely, polystyrenecaproamide (I), polystyrenehexamethyleneadipamide (II), and poly(styreneethylene terephthalate) (III), were prepared, and the properties of the copolymers in relation to the block sequence lengths and the compositions were studied. Styrene was polymerized in the presence of aluminum chloride and thionyl chloride to give ω,ω′-dichloropolystyrenes of various degrees of polymerization from 12.0 to 51.0, which were either ammonolyzed to ω,ω′-diaminopolystyrene or hydrolyzed to ω,ω′-dihydroxypolystyrene. ω,ω′-Diaminopolystyre was treated with adipic acid to give the corresponding salts, namely, ω,ω′-diammoniumpolystyrene adipate, which was melt-polymerized either with ε-amino-n-caproic acid to give polystyrenecaproamide (I) or with hexamethylenediammonium adipate to give polystyrenehexamethyleneadipamide (II). ω,ω′-Dihydroxypolystyrene was melt-polymerized with dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol to give poly(styreneethylene terephthalate) (III). All the block copolymers were of high enough molecular weight to be cast or spun into films or filaments. Upon polymerization, the increase of the block sequence of PSt units increased the amide content but decreased the ester content of the resulting copolymers. Also, an increase in n decreased the inherent viscosities of the copolymers at a constant monomer feed fc counted by the polymer equivalent of PSt but increased the inherent viscosities at a constant monomer feed rc counted by the monomer equivalent of PSt. The melting points of the copolymers decreased with increasing n values. Also, an increase in n decreased the densities of I and III but increased the density of II at a constant amide or ester composition Fc counted by polymer units but increased the densities of I, II, and III at a constant amide or ester composition Rc counted by the monomer unit.

Notes: Alternating polyamide esters of structures A and B were obtained by melt polymerization of dimethyl adipate and terephthalate or by solution polymerization of adipoyl and terephthaloyl chlorides, with N,N′-di(6-hydroxycaproyl)diamines and an N-6-hydroxycaproyl aminoalcohol: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {\rlap{--} [{\rm O(CH}_2 )_5 {\rm CONHR}_{\rm 1} {\rm NHCO(CH}_{\rm 2} {\rm )}_{\rm 5} {\rm OCOR}_{\rm 2} {\rm CO}\rlap{--} ]_n } \\ {\mathop {{\rm \rlap{--} [O(CH}_{\rm 2} {\rm )}_{\rm 5} {\rm CONHR}_{\rm 1} {\rm OCOR}_{\rm 2} {\rm CO\rlap{--} ]}_{\rm 2} }\limits_{\rm B}^{\rm A} } \\ \end{array} $\end{document} where R1 is selected from dimethylene, hexamethylene, and p-phenylene radicals, and R2 is selected from tetramethylene or p-phenyl radical. Polyamide esters of structure A′ were also prepared: Average values of melting points of the resulting polyamide esters were dependent on the starting diacid derivatives, amide diols, and methods of polymerizations as follows: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \begin{array}{l} {\rm CPZ 〈 ECA 〈 CHD 〈 CED 〈 CPPD} \\ {\rm DMA 〈 ADC 〈 DMT 〈 TPC} \\ {\rm melt polymerization 〈 solution polymerization} \\ \end{array} $\end{document} where CPZ, CHD, CED, and CPPD are N,N′-di(6-hydroxycaproy1)-, each in this order: piperazine, hexamethylenediamine, ethylenediamine, and p-phenylenediamine. ECA is N-(2-hydroxyethyl)6-hydroxycaproamide. For a given polyamide ester obtained from the same starting materials and by the same method of polymerization, the melting points increased with inherent viscosities. Polyamide esters of high molecular weight were obtained from CHD with both adipic and terepbthalic derivatives both by melt and solution polymerizations. Polymerizations of the other amide diols gave lower molecular weights. Solution polymerization gave colorless or light-colored polymers, while melt polymerization gave deeper-colored polymers.
