    In: Reviews in mineralogy
Description / Table of Contents: Oxygen and silicon are the two most common elements in the earth's crust, together constituting an estimated 74.32 weight % and 83.77 atom % of crustal rocks (Mason and Moore, 1982). Thus, it is not surprising that SiO2 or silica, is the most abundant oxide on the earth's surface. In his widely cited survey, Clarke (1904) calculated that quartz alone comprises 12.0% of the crust by volume, ranking behind the mineral groups that include feldspar (59.5%) and amphibole/pyroxene (16.8%). Consequently, research into the silica system is motivated foremost by the prevalence of silica in man's immediate environment. The ubiquity of silica in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks has led earth scientists to seek its uses as an indicator of large-scale geological processes, ranging from mountain-building to meteorite impacts. In industry, quartz has long played a prosaic but essential role as an inexpensive and relatively inert constituent of concrete aggregates, and modern electronics technology still relies on quartz oscillators. Silica phases also have played a prominent role in our understanding of the solid state. Physicists first discovered optical activity in crystals and the existence of soft modes during their investigations of quartz. Many scientists have written substantial reviews documenting the importance of silica in the earth, materials, and physical sciences. Notable among these are Robert Sosman, who followed his Properties of Silica (1927) with The Phases of Silica (1965), and Clifford Frondel, who devoted the third volume of Dana's System of Mineralogy (1962) exclusively to the silica minerals. These treatises continue to serve as encyclopedic resources for those interested in silica, and their historical analyses and descriptions of mineral varieties, morphologies, and localities will remain forever useful. Nevertheless, the past three decades have witnessed a first-order expansion of our knowledge of the silica system, and it is time to provide an updated silica review. The present volume focuses on the most recent developments, and it is intended to supplement rather than replace the earlier works of Sosman and Frondel. The contributions to this volume cover silica chemistry in the following fashion: Chapters 1 through 3 describe the crystal structures and phase transitions of silica and its stuffed derivatives. Recent studies of the low-pressure polymorphs quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite have demonstrated unusual superperiodic phases and other anomalies associated with structural transformations (Chapter 1). Spectacular progress in multianvil and diamond cell technologies has made the high-pressure regime accessible, revealing new transitions in the coesite and stishovite systems as well as the phenomenon of pressureinduced amorphization (Chapter 2). Stoichiometric substitution of cations within the frameworks of both low- and high-pressure polymorphs produces a dizzying variety of derivative compounds that are of geological and industrial importance (Chapter 3). Chapters 4 through 9 bridge the relationship between the microstructural character of real silica minerals and the behavior of silica in the geological environment. Incorporation of small amounts of H dramatically weakens quartz exposed to stress (Chapter 4). Consequently, tectonic pressures may lead not to brittle fracture but to the production of high densities of dislocations and preferred orientation in polycrystalline quartz (Chapter 5). The low pressures and temperatures in sedimentary settings may promote the crystallization of highly defective silica phases that are frequently metastable (Chapter 6); through diagenetic processes, these minerals anneal to macrocrystalline quartz (Chapter 7). The nature of the surface structure of quartz strongly influences the mechanisms and kinetics of silica dissolution in aqueous fluids (Chapter 8). Chapters 9 through 13 treat the basic physical properties of the phases of silica. Recent calorimetric studies of some of the more unusual silica compounds have added insight into the stability of the silica framework (Chapter 9). Quantum mechanical considerations of the Si-O bond have yielded a fundamental understanding of the bond lengths and angles within the polymorphous silica system (Chapter 10). Calculations based upon first-principles theory have achieved significant success in explaining and predicting silica transitions at high temperatures and pressures (Chapter 11). Spectroscopic analyses of silica (Chapters 12 and 13) have revealed vibrational behaviors in response to variations in temperature, pressure, and composition that have deepened our understanding of the dynamic interactions within the silica structure. Chapters 14 through 16 detail the uses of silica for industrial purposes. For instance, doping silica with other cations produces ceramics with low expansion on heating (Chapter 14), and high-silica zeolites are being explored for their properties as catalysts and molecular sieves (Chapter 15). High concentrations of silica dust in the workplace long have been linked with the incidence of respiratory diseases, such as silicosis, and recent evidence suggests that crystalline silica may be carcinogenic (Chapter 16).

Description / Table of Contents: Geoscientists need to familiarize themselves with the characteristics of actual plate motions. A popular, current thesis relates the state of stress to the degree of coupling of the two convergent plates. Recent two-dimentional, finite element modelling has demonstrated how the stress in the overriding plate is critically dependent on wether the subduction zone is locked (i.e. high degree of coupling) or unlocked. Thus the compressional stress regime occurs in locked systems, and extensional strees in unlocked systems; a gradient from compression in the fore-arc to extension in the back-arc is said to characterize partially locked system. However, studies of the strain field in real cases (modern arc regions) clearly indicate the prevalence of subhorizontal extension orientated nearly perpendicular to the arc. Implicit in these real observations is the suggestion that stresses resulting from plate coupling are either not transmitted to the volcanic arc, or else locked subduction zones are uncommon and extension may be the normal mode of behaviour. The rationale and evidence for extension and coeval volcanism at consuming plate margins is presented. Using mainly Cenozoic case histories for oceanic and continental margin arcs, structural evidence is presented, which demonstrates that volcanism in most arc systems is contemporaneous with normal faulting and subsidence as a general case. Representive, modern geochemical data sets are provided and integrated in a petrological discussion for each case history. The western Pacific, now widely regard as a type region for the study of convergent plate margin processes, is particularly well represented. Also included is evidence from less commonly insvestigated regions, where subduction has ceased or is no longer obvious but an association with an arc is unequivocal. By these means, it is hoped that this volume contains a representative cross-section of current research on extension-related arc volcanism in broadest sense, and that it will stimulate further discussion and research into the complex tectonics and petrology of covergent plate margins.

Description / Table of Contents: Frozen Ground Engineering first introduces the reader to the frozen environment and the behavior of frozen soil as an engineering material. In subsequent chapters this information is used in the analysis and design of ground support systems, foundations, and embankments. These and other topics make this book suitable for use by civil engineering students in a one-semester course on frozen ground engineering at the senior or first-year-graduate level. Students are assumed to have a working knowledge of undergraduate mechanics (statics and mechanics of materials) and geotechnical engineering (usual two-course sequence). A knowledge of basic geology would be helpful but is not essential. This book will also be useful to advanced students in other disciplines and to engineers who desire an introduction to frozen ground engineering or references to selected technical publications in the field. BACKGROUND Frozen ground engineering has developed rapidly in the past several decades under the pressure of necessity. As practical problems involving frozen soils broadened in scope, the inadequacy of earlier methods for coping became increasingly apparent. The application of ground freezing to geotechnical projects throughout the world continues to grow as significant advances have been made in ground freezing technology. Freezing is a useful and versatile technique for temporary earth support, groundwater control in difficult soil or rock strata, and the formation of subsurface containment barriers suitable for use in groundwater remediation projects.

Description / Table of Contents: A three-dimensional theory is derived to describe the temporal behavior of gravity currents of cohesionless granular media, in an attempt to model the motion of dense, flow-type snow avalanches, ice and rock slides. A mohr-Coulomb yield criterion is assumed to describe the constitutive behavior of the material, and the basal bed friction is described similarly by a Coulomb type of friction. A drag term is included in order to model the occurrence of flow regimes where boundary drag becomes non-negligible. Data from laboratory simulations are compared to a series of numerical studies based on the aforementioned theory. A nondimensional, depth and width averaged form of the theory is considered. A Lagrangian finite difference scheme is then applied to numerically model some limiting cases of the governing equations. Two different numerical models are developed, tested and compared to experimental values. The results indicate that the model can account for flow transitions by inclusion of the drag term when the initial inclination angle is large enough to affect boundary drag. Furthermore, the temporal and spatial evolution of the granulate and final runout position can be predicted to values well within the experimental error.

Description / Table of Contents: Subsurface radar was used to profile ice and snow conditions on the Ross Ice Shelf at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, during mid-January 1993. Deconvolution and migration were often used to improve vertical resolution and spatial imaging. Profiles at a pulse center frequency of 400 MHz along the 3.2-km-long Pegasus ice runway show many low-density horizons above 9 m depth that are up to 30 m long. They are associated with air bubbles included during refreezing of meltwater and are interpreted as layers between a few and tens of centimeters thick. There is a strong reflecting horizon at about 9 m depth that is probably from brine intrusion as it is continuous with the intrusion into the snow to the east. Diffraction asymptotes give a dielectric constant near 3.2 for material above the brine level, a value that implies near-solid ice. Profiles at 100 MHz along the road between Pegasus runway and Williams Field in the accumulation zone show snow features such as layer deformation and intrusive brine layers that both abruptly and gradually change in depth. A single profile at a relic solid waste dump at Williams Field detected buried debris and ice within the upper 7 m. A survey of a suspected fuel spill shows some local disturbances near the center, but no excavation was done to verify the findings. Profiles traversing the sewage sumps at Williams Field outline the extent of the sewage deposition, and give depths to contaminated snow that closely agree with observation. Despite variability in dielectric properties, single-layer migration effectively improves the resolution of subsurface conditions. Recommendations are made for future surveys.

Description / Table of Contents: This book gives an account of the modern view of the global circulation of the atmosphere. It brings the observed nature of the circulation together with theories and simple models of the mechanisms which drive it. Early chapters concentrate on the classical view of the global circulation, on the processes which generate atmospheric motions and on the dynamical constraints which modify them. Later chapters develop more recent themes including low frequency variability and the circulations of other planetary atmospheres. The book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers who wish for an introduction to the subject before engaging with the original scientific literature. The book is copiously illustrated, and includes many results of diagnostic and modelling studies. Each chapter includes a set of problems and bibliographical notes.
