    Notes: The Subukia Valley earthquake in East Africa, magnitude 6.9, occurred on 1928 January 6. This is a little known earthquake associated with a 38 km long surface break that showed normal faulting with a small component of left lateral motion. Maximum throw was 240 cm with an average along the rupture of less than 100 cm. The earthquake triggered rockfalls and minor landslides and exhibited long-period effects at large distances. Considering the magnitude of the earthquake, the amount of damage it caused was not as great as it could have been. This is directly attributable to the sparsity of dwellings and the inherent resistance to earthquake shaking of the local type of huts. In the process of studying this earthquake, the seismicity of the (Gregory) Kenya Rift Valley has been re-evaluated. It is shown that relatively large but infrequent earthquakes do occur in the Kenya (Gregory) Rift Valley, a slowly extending region of low apparent seismicity, and that the seismic hazard of this part of East Africa, deduced from data of the last 95 years, is significant.

    Notes: This paper presents the results of the calculation of surface-wave magnitudes of Central American earthquakes between 1898 and 1930. Some 168 events are identified for which magnitudes can be calculated either on early Milne instruments or later damped seismographs. This is about six times as many as listed in regional or global catalogues. The locations of the more important events were revised using a combination of instrumental readings and macroseismic information.

    Notes: We examined the seismicity of central Greece between 1890 and 1988, using macroseismic and instrumental data, to ask two questions: (1) does the seismicity of this period reveal all the major tectonic structures that are known to be active?; and (2) what are the likely strains associated with the seismicity over this period? Many known active structures have been effectively aseismic for the last hundred years, and even the inclusion of all known large events earlier than 1890 reveals no activity associated with the NE coast of Evia, Gulf of Argos, or graben NE of Mt Parnassos. It is clear that even 100 years’ data are inadequate for either a reasonable assessment of seismic risk or for a confident estimation of maximum magnitude. However, we are aware of no earthquakes in central Greece during the last 200 yr that were larger than Ms 7.0. It is probable that the maximum magnitude is restricted by the maximum length of fault segments, which appears to be around 15-20 km. The earthquakes of Ms≥ 5.8 during 1890-1988 can account for a N-S displacement of around 45-70 cm (with maximum and minimum estimates a factor of two greater and smaller than this) across part of a 1890-1900 triangulation network in central Greece that was resurveyed in 1988. The contribution of smaller events may increase this displacement by about 50 per cent. This cumulative seismic displacement is similar to that estimated from the geodetic work (about 100 cm), but a detailed comparison of the two sets of observations will be reported elsewhere. A re-evaluation of all the important earthquakes of 1890–1988 in central Greece is presented in the Appendix, which summarizes information of use to both earth scientists and engineers.

    Notes: We have collected and re-examined macroseismic information for large Central American earthquakes since the beginning of the period of instrumental recording about one hundred years ago, and combined this with a reassessment of early instrumental information to produce a catalogue of 51 events that, we believe includes ail those with magnitudes (Ms) greater than 7.0. We have reassessed surface-wave magnitudes by consulting station bulletins and we have derived a correction that gives an equivalent Ms for events of intermediate depth. We have also developed a regional relationship between Ms and seismic moment, which enables us to estimate the seismic slip rate across the Middle American Trench. Our best estimates give an average slip rate several times smaller than suggested convergence rates, but with the seismic slip in the central segment of the trench almost an order of magnitude smaller than that in the segments on either side. The low seismic slip rate may indicate aseismic crustal deformation
