Description / Table of Contents: Fracture in structural materials remains a vital consideration in engineering systems, affecting the reliability of machines throughout their lives. Impressive advances in both the theoretical understanding of fracture mechanisms and practical developments that offer possibilities of control have re-shaped the subject over the past four decades. The contributors to this volume, including some of the most prominent researchers in the field, give their long-range perspectives of the research on the fracture of solids and its achievements. The subjects covered in this volume include: statistics of brittle fracture, transition of fracture from brittle to ductile, mechanics and mechanisms of ductile separation of heterogenous solids, the crack tip environment in ductile fracture, and mechanisms and mechanics of fatigue. Materials considered range from the usual structural solids to composites. The chapters include both theoretical points of view and discussions of key experiments. Contributors include: from MIT, A.S. Argon, D.M. Parks; from Cambridge, M.F. Ashby; from U.C. Santa Barbara, A.G. Evans, R. McMeeking; from Glasgow, J. Hancock; from Harvard, J.W. Hutchinson, J.R. Rice; from Sheffield, K.J. Miller; from Brown, A. Needleman; from the Ecole des Mines, A. Pineau; from U.C. Berkeley, R. O. Ritchie; and from Copenhagen, V. Tvergaard

Description / Table of Contents: Results are presented of a study to determine appropriate methods of flow modification for mitigating ice jam formation in navigable rivers. Based on a review of alternative methods for flow modification, it is concluded that for many rivers, especially large ones, the most appropriate method involves controlled ice-cover formation through the regulation of river flow. Flow discharge and stages would be regulated by controlling the flow releases from reservoirs and flow stages at river dams, such that optimal flow conditions prevail for rapid formation, and subsequent maintenance, of an accumulation ice cover over river reaches in which potentially large amounts of frazil ice may grow. Accumulation covers would be formed of frazil ice pans and floes and, if appropriate, broken ice conveyed from upstream. Existing dams, augmented where needed by navigable ice booms, could serve as retention structures for the development of accumulation covers. A preliminary indication of the feasibility of this method for controlling ice-cover formation on stage-regulated pools of the Ohio River is assessed through the use of a numerical model that simulates ice-cover formation from frazil ice. It is found that this approach holds promise for mitigating jam occurrence, although its implementation necessarily entails management of flow through major portions of the Ohio River. The results of the study are, to a limited extent, generalized to other rivers.

Description / Table of Contents: A laboratory study of the behavior of snow under shock wave loading and unloading conditions was conducted using a 200-mm-diameter gas gun to generate loading waves in snow samples with initial densities of 100 to 520 kg m-3 at temperatures of -2 to -23 deg C. Stress levels were 2 to 40 MPa. The response of snow to shock wave loading was measured as a function of distance from the impact plane using embedded stress gauges. Large impedance differences between snow and the stress gauges produced complex stress histories. A finite element model, along with a simple analytical model of the experiment, was used to interpret the stress histories. Snow deformation was not affected by initial temperature, but was found to be rate dependent. The initial density of the snow determined its pressure-deformation path. The pressure needed to compact snow to a specific final density increases with decreasing initial density. The release moduli increased nonlinearly from 50 MPa at a snow pressure of about 15 MPa to 2700 MPa at a snow pressure of about 40 MPa.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: A deep rotary core drilling project in 1957 at Site 2 on the Greenland ice sheet (76°59'N, 56°04'W provided ice core to a depth of 411 m. The vertical variation in bulk density, macroscopic structure, oxygen isotope ratios, ionic constituents, and extraterrestrial dust (black spherules) were analyzed using both field and laboratory techniques . These data permit the direct estimate of annual accumulation layers in the core. Continuous stratigraphic measurements and observations were made over the upper 110 m of the profile and detailed physical and chemical analyses were made on continuous lo 3 to 3.9-m core increments at 100, 200, 300 and 411-m depths. The average total ionic concentration in the ice sheet ranges between 0.65 and 1.35 mg/liter. The annual global mass deposit of black spherules as calculated from these studies varies from 2.10 x 10^5 metric tons in 700 year old ice to 6.57 x 10^5 metric tons in 12 year old firn. The oxygen isotope ratio variation provides the best means of estimating accumulation at depth. Results of the investigations indicate rates of net snow accumulation of 42.3, 34.2, 37.4, 41.1 and 41.6 g/cm^2 -yr at the surface, A.D. c. 1773, c. 1513, c. 1233 and c. 934 respectively. Accumulation data and other physical and chemical evidence allow climatological inferences to be made over the 10-century profile. The ice core record shows that snow accumulation and temperature in A. D. 934 were similar to today, followed by a gradual decrease in accumulation to a minimum around the late 18th century and an increase in both accumulation and temperature from A. D. 1773 to 1957 and following.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Translation of the abstract: This work is a continuation of the monograph "Tectonic Structure of the Yakutek ASSR" written by the same group of authors and published in 1964. In contrast to this work, the main attention is paid to the deep structure of the earth's crust, which is inaccessible in most cases for studies by conventional geological methods. The monograph presents a relief scheme of the crystalline base covering the eastern part of the Siberian Platform and the southern half of the Verkhoyansk-Chukotka folded region. For the same territory, the relief schemes of the Konrad and Mohorovichic surfaces are given. The technique for constructing the indicated interfaces of the earth's crust is described in detail. The structure of the main structural elements of the cover and their relationship with the deep structure are considered. For the first time in the territory under consideration, deep faults are systematized by age and depth of occurrence, and their detailed description is given. Taking into account new geological and geophysical data, the history of the tectonic development of the territory of Yakutia in the Precambrian, Lower and Middle Paleozoic is considered.

Description / Table of Contents: The book by M. S. Krass and V. G. Merzlikin "The Radiative Thermophysics of Snow and Ice"- the new point of view with usage of methods of light-scattering media theory is realized as working of theory of radiative thermophysics of snow and ice. The statements of new class of thermophysics problems are presented, snow and ice are supposed as light-scattering media with volume reflection and absorption. For the first time this method have helped to explain some noted effects of metamorphic evolution in upper active layer of snow-ice medium and to correct lows of their mass-energy exchange. Optical and physical models for different kinds of snow and ice were studied. The models take into account snow and ice-atmosphere interaction by means of convective heat transfer, solar flux and long-wavelength reradiation, and also phase transitions in medium and at boundaries. The model realizations of various native cases of forming heat regime within snow-ice covers are considered. For all that the way of practical use of theoretical results is shown. The range of the problems makes the book to be interesting for experts in glaciology and planetology, physicists, mathematicians, geographers, climatologists.

Description / Table of Contents: A three-dimensional theory is derived to describe the temporal behavior of gravity currents of cohesionless granular media, in an attempt to model the motion of dense, flow-type snow avalanches, ice and rock slides. A mohr-Coulomb yield criterion is assumed to describe the constitutive behavior of the material, and the basal bed friction is described similarly by a Coulomb type of friction. A drag term is included in order to model the occurrence of flow regimes where boundary drag becomes non-negligible. Data from laboratory simulations are compared to a series of numerical studies based on the aforementioned theory. A nondimensional, depth and width averaged form of the theory is considered. A Lagrangian finite difference scheme is then applied to numerically model some limiting cases of the governing equations. Two different numerical models are developed, tested and compared to experimental values. The results indicate that the model can account for flow transitions by inclusion of the drag term when the initial inclination angle is large enough to affect boundary drag. Furthermore, the temporal and spatial evolution of the granulate and final runout position can be predicted to values well within the experimental error.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: Pendulum steering, a new concept of attitude stabilization for thermal probes or coring drills in ice, eliminates instability. The center of support is placed above the center of gravity. A lower and upper hot point produce melt penetration. The ratio of their power levels is the basis for stabilization, which is provided by the automatic control of the heater in the upper hot point. This feature makes possible a single thermal probe design that is suitable for all ice cap temperatures and a wide range of penetration rates (i.e., applied power levels). The simplicity of a thermal probe with pendulum steering suggests availability at modest cost and versatility as a widely applicable tool.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: The report is divided into four parts: Parts I and II cover investigations of the reliability of shear stress measurements in soils subjected to vibratory loads for biaxial and triaxial systems, respectively. Part I is a summary only (see USA CRREL Technical Report 90 for detailed treatment). Part III is a study of three-dimensional "principal" stress patterns produced in soil subjected to vibratory loads. Part IV is a theoretical analysis of some aspects of soil wave propagation in stratified soil. From the measurements of five shear stresses and one normal stress, the stress distribution of a triaxial system can be determined. In noncohesive soils triaxial stress fields due to vibratory loads can be determined by recording six independent stress components. Sinusoidal force excitation and impact excitation yield time-distance graphs which can be used to determine reflection and refraction techniques in stratified soils.
