Description / Table of Contents: Atmospheric Tidal and Planetary Waves is written for workers in the fields of meteorology, climatology, aeronomy and space physics, and deals in a unified way with global scale dynamical processes within the lower, middle, and upper atmosphere. lrregular ultralong planetary waves with periods ranging from a few days to a few years are considered, as well as regular large-scale waves with basic periods of one (solar or lunar) day and one year, and the climatic mean flow (lumped together as tidal waves). The basic concept is the separation of the atmospheric flow into eigenmodes on a sphere (Hough functions). The sources and the meridional and vertical structure of these modes are discussed in detail, and Observations of tidal and planetary waves within the lower, middle, and upper atmosphere are interpreted in terms of Hough modes. The effects of nonlinear wave-wave interactions are outlined.

Description / Table of Contents: This is a book exclusively devoted to three minerals: the Al2SiO5 polymorphs - andalusite, sillimanite, and kyanite. This may seem to be narrowly focused and esoteric. However, as discussed in Chapter 1, the aluminum silicate polymorphs are perhaps the most important mineral group to metamorphic petrologists. Because these minerals occur in anatectic migmatites and peraluminous granitoids, they are also important in igneous petrology. In spite of their geologic significance, there are a variety of experimental, theoretical, and field problems involving the aluminum silicates. Theoretical problems include the nature and energetics of lattice defects, order/disorder, crystalline (solid) solution, and interfacial energy. The aluminum silicates epitomize the importance of understanding the mechanisms and kinetics of heterogeneous metamorphic reactions. The difficulties in calibration of the pressure-temperature (P- T) phase equilibrium diagram illustrate the pitfalls of hydrothermal experimentation and the need to understand the methodology and uncertainties of calorimetric measurements of thermodynamic data of minerals. Thus, this book covers a wide variety of topics that must be considered in the analysis of metamorphic systems. In so doing, this volume illustrates the fact that modern metamorphic petrology demands an awareness of a wide spectrum of geologic variables and processes. In concert with the tenor of the Mineralogical Society of America Reviews in Mineralogy series, this volume is intended to provide a comprehensive review, summarizing the methods, theories and pitfalls of the various contributions on the aluminum silicates. Hopefully, this book will provide readers with a reasonably in-depth overview, and thus avoid the need for extensive, independent literature reviews. Although a concerted effort was made to give a balanced coverage of divergent theories regarding various problems involving the aluminum silicates, this critique nevertheless includes some of the author's biases. Several sections of this book present the chronological development of research on various topics, giving readers historical perspectives on the development of theories, models and biases on various problems regarding the aluminum silicates. As in all fields, several landmark studies have set the tone for the strategy of approach to problems. Although such studies have provided important steps forward in our understanding of natural phenomena, they have had the undesirable effect of entrenching biases and methodology. In this volume I have attempted to point out the deleterious effects of certain parochial approaches, an example being the aluminum immobility concept discussed in Chapter 10. In addition to their primary importance in metamorphic petrology, the aluminum silicates illustrate a wide variety of experimental, theoretical, and experimental problems. Because the Al2SiO5 polymorphs alone offer a pedagogic illustration of many important principles of modern metamorphic petrology.

Description / Table of Contents: Volatile components, by which we mean those magma constituents which typically prefer to occur in the gaseous or super-critical fluid state, may influence virtually every aspect of igneous petrology. The study of volatile-bearing systems, both in nature and in the laboratory, has far exceeded the relative abundances of these components in igneous rocks, yet in many ways the words of Bowen (1928) are still broadly applicable: " ... to many petrologists a volatile component is exactly like a Maxwell demon; it does just what one may wish it to do." (Bowen, 1928, p. 282) What we hope to show in this volume are some areas of progress in understanding the behavior of magmatic volatiles and their influence on a wide variety of geological phenomena; in doing this it also becomes apparent that there remain many questions outstanding. The range of topics we have tried to cover is broad, going from atomisticscale aspects of volatile solubility mechanisms and attendant effects on melt physical properties, to the chemistry of volcanic gases and the concentrations of volatiles in magmas, to the global geochemical cycles of volatiles. The reader should quickly see that much progress has been made since Bowen voiced his concerns about Maxwell demons, but like much scientific progress, answers to old questions have prompted even greater numbers of new questions. The Voltiles in Magmas course was organized and transpired at the Napa Valley Sheraton Hotel in California, December 2-4, 1994, just prior to the Fall Meetings of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

Description / Table of Contents: Antarctica has long provided scientists with a unique window for the observation of the natural world. Most recently, atmospheric and other studies have provided valuable indicators of the possible effects of humankind's activities on the global environment, promoting the continent to a key position in the study of natural global systems and our potential to affect them. This book is the first to describe the development of scientific activity in the Antarctic (as distinct from exploration) in all its aspects. Coverage spans three centuries, starting with Halley who laid the foundations of geophysics which was to be the principal driving force behind Antarctic science for most of its history. Although early researchers built up a picture of the main features of the Antarctic environment, the idea of science specific to the continent emerged only later. As the main disciplines of oceanography, earth sciences, the sciences of atmosphere and geospace, terrestrial biology, medicine, and conservation developed, the clear interactions between them within an Antarctic context led to the emergence of the holistic view of Antarctic science which we hold today. For anyone with an interest in the history, conservation or politics of this special part of the world, or in the history of the development of science, this book will provide a mine of information and will act as a rich source of reference for many years to come.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: This book is devoted to the study of relief formation and the analysis of specific landforms on the lowlying sections in the Arctic permafrost zone. Cryomorphologic features, quaternary deposits; ground ice, tectonic and other natural conditions are considered on the example of the Lena Delta. The significance of cryomorphologic processes is revealed in the evolution of both ancient and modern permafrost landscapes in the area. Cryomorphocomplexcs are identified for individual geomorphologic regions (subregions), which are suitable indicators used for different geological and geomorphological mapping purposes. The identification of these complexes is an important step in the cryomorphogenetic analysis. Readership: permafrost researchers, geomorphologists, geographers, geologists, ecologists, scientists interested in the problems of the relief formation in the Arctic and in the Arctic delta areas.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Did Robert Peary and Frederick Cook reach the North Pole? Who are they - falsifiers or deluded? Was Admiral S.O. Makarov wrong? Did Umberto Nobile fly over the North Pole or away from it? Who was the first to reach this symbolic point on a surface ship, dog sleds, hot air balloon, airship, airplane, submarine? The author of the book answers all of these questions far from the spirit of existing encyclopedias, textbooks and periodicals. The reader can learn these and other questions of the history of the centuries-old "race" to the North Pole from this book, in which the motives of Man's aspirations to the top of our planet are revealed step by step in a fascinating and unconventional form.

Description / Table of Contents: Growth and Reproductive Strategies of Freshwater Phytoplankton brings both the phycological (i.e. botanical) and limnological (i.e. ecological) literature into focus to reveal the morphological, reproductive, and physiological characteristics of these microscopic organisms. Emphasis is on adaptive strategies for survival in stressful and seasonally changing aquatic habitats. The syntheses of these literatures from an organismal and evolutionary perspective is unique. The following important groups of planktonic algae are considered: cyanobacteria, green algae, diatoms, dinoflagellates, cryptomonads, and chrysophyte flagellates. For each algal group, the importance of both growth and loss processes influencing biogeography and seasonality is emphasized. Where appropriate, the importance of sexual reproduction and benthic resting stages is considered. The final three chapters bring together data on three major ecological processes relevant to phytoplankton, i.e. resource competition, grazing by herbivorous zooplankton, and morphological and physiological "packaging plans" of algal cells.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Stone glaciers (glaciers) are widespread in many mountain systems of the world. They are formed in conditions of permafrost and deep dissection of the relief. Until now, these periglacial landforms remain extremely poorly studied in all respects, but this is especially true of their internal structure, genesis and evolution. Little attention is paid to them in Russian literature, although they are found in some mountainous regions more often than glaciers. The history of study, distribution, external appearance, internal structure, nature of movement, genesis and evolution of stone glaciers are described in an entertaining form. Their influence on various natural processes in the mountains is considered, considerations are made regarding the relationship of stone glaciers with human economic activity. The book is intended for a wide range of readers, including students and schoolchildren.

Description / Table of Contents: Subject of the monograph "Diagnostics of the climatic system structure" by I. I. Mokhov is connected with the diagnostics of the structure of climatic variable fields in the atmosphere and ocean. Structural peculiarities of the land active layer, cryosphere and biosphere are also considered. The analysis of empirical (satellite and ground-based) data is acompanied by an analysis of results of climate models, including climatic general circulation models. Diagnostics is carried out for latitude zones and for more detailed latitude - altitude and latitude - longitude (or altitude - longitude) resolution with the purpose of exhibition and confirmation of global and regional mechanisms of the earth's climatic system formation. In addition to standard methods a special method of amplitude - phase characteristics is used in the diagnosis of climatic evolution. An analysis of characteristics of climate system sensitivity is accompanied by an analysis of characteristics of its instability. The monograph is intended for specialists of gephysical thermo- and hydrodynamics.
