    Description / Table of Contents: Atlas contains photographic images of 91 plant species and pollen which are found in Lena River Delta as well as information about current conditions of their growth. This is a major advantage of this atlas as compared to other publications of this kind. All information is presented in Russian and English. All materials were collected in framework of the Russian-German expeditions "Lena-2009", "Lena-2010", "Lena-2011" and "Lena-2012". Photographs illustrate the general view of the plant, inflorescence and pollen grains in different positions and from high to low focus. Plants are grouped into families, where each family has its own color. Atlas is addressed not only to specialists in palynology, but to all who are interested in the flora and vegetation of the Arctic region, including students of geographical, biological and environmental fields.

    Description / Table of Contents: This book presents the basic principles of soil dynamics, and a variety of solutions of practical interest for geotechnical engineering, geophysics and earthquake engineering. Emphasis is on analytical solutions, often including the full derivation of the solution, and giving the main parts of computer programs that can be used to calculate numerical data. Reference is also made to a website from which complete computer programs can be downloaded. Soil behaviour is usually assumed to be linear elastic, but in many cases the effect of viscous damping or hysteretic damping, due to plastic deformations, is also considered. Special features are: the analysis of wave propagation in saturated compressible porous media, approximate analysis of the generation of Rayleigh waves, the analysis of the response of soil layers to earthquakes in the deep rock, with a theoretical foundation of such problems by the propagation of Love waves, and the solution of such basic problems as the response of an elastic half space to point loads, line loads, strip loads and moving loads.

    Description / Table of Contents: "The geochemistry and chemistry of sulfur, iron and iron sulfides in sedimentary systems is reviewed. Sulfur microbiology is described and the microbial ecology of sulfidic sediments is discussed. Sulfur and iron stable isotope biochemistry is addressed against the background of recent advances in this field with respect to sedimentary and microbial systems. Environmental aspects of the present sedimentary sulfur cycle are considered with special references to the development of euxinia and global anoxic events. The biogeochemistry of ancient sulphur-rich sediments is considered and the evolution of the sedimentary sulfur system is discussed against the background of the evolution of the Earth surface environment. Treibhausklima, Klimaschwankungen, Klimamodelle, Meeresspiegel, Meeresversauerung). Dabei nimmt er immer wieder Bezug auf Methoden und Weiterentwicklung der (interdisziplinären) Klimawissenschaft. Als hilfreich erweisen sich seine unter "Fazit" jeweils fett gedruckten zusammenfassenden Aussagen am Ende jeden Kapitels sowie die gut integrierten schematischen Darstellungen. Sehr empfohlen, neben L. Spandau: "Klima" (BA 8/08), für Leser, die solide, grundlegende Informationen suchen, um die komplexen Zusammenhänge des Klimas im Wandel, speziell die Bedingungen für die Erderwärmung besser zu verstehen.     Description / Table of Contents: The Arctic is considered as a focal region in the ongoing climate change debate. The currently observed and predicted climate warming is particularly pronounced in the high northern latitudes. Rising temperatures in the Arctic cause progressive deepening and duration of permafrost thawing during the arctic summer, creating an ‘active layer’ with high bioavailability of nutrients and labile carbon for microbial consumption. The microbial mineralization of permafrost carbon creates large amounts of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, which can be released to the atmosphere, creating a positive feedback to global warming. Er informiert über die naive Euphorie der 1950er-Jahre, die hochfliegenden Pläne der 1960er-Jahre, Sicherheitsprobleme, das Aufkommen von Protestbewegungen und den Abstieg, der durch die Unglücke von Tschernobyl und Fukushima beschleunigt wurde. Es wirkt erstaunlich, wie zufällig die von falschen Prognosen, zu optimistischen Expertenmeinungen, schlampigen Gutachten und politischen Querelen geprägte Entwicklung verlief. Die Autoren gehen auch auf die alternativen Energien ein, denen sie eine geordnetere Zukunft wünschen. Eine erhellende Lektüre, die aber einen langen Atem und intensives Interesse am Thema erfordert. With a sweeping look at the European expansionism and racism of the last five hundred years, Charles W. Mills demonstrates how this peculiar and unacknowledged "contract" has shaped a system of global European domination: how it brings into existence "whites" and "non-whites," full persons and sub-persons, how it influences white moral theory and moral psychology; and how this system is imposed on non-whites through ideological conditioning and violence. The Racial Contract argues that the society we live in is a continuing white supremacist state. Holding up a mirror to mainstream philosophy, this provocative book explains the evolving outline of the racial contract from the time of the New World conquest and subsequent colonialism to the written slavery contract, to the "separate but equal" system of segregation in the twentieth-century United States. According to Mills, the contract has provided the theoretical architecture justifying an entire history of European atrocity against non-whites, from David Hume's and Immanuel Kant's claims that blacks had inferior cognitive power, to the Holocaust, to the kind of imperialism in Asia that was demonstrated by the Vietnam War. Mills suggests that the ghettoization of philosophical work on race is no accident. This work challenges the assumption that mainstream theory is itself raceless.     Description / Table of Contents: The Arctic tundra, covering approx. 5.5 % of the Earth’s land surface, is one of the last ecosystems remaining closest to its untouched condition. Remote sensing is able to provide information at regular time intervals and large spatial scales on the structure and function of Arctic ecosystems. But almost all natural surfaces reveal individual anisotropic reflectance behaviors, which can be described by the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). This effect can cause significant changes in the measured surface reflectance depending on solar illumination and sensor viewing geometries. The aim of this thesis is the hyperspectral and spectro-directional reflectance characterization of important Arctic tundra vegetation communities at representative Siberian and Alaskan tundra sites as basis for the extraction of vegetation parameters, and the normalization of BRDF effects in off-nadir and multi-temporal remote sensing data.     Description / Table of Contents: Resilienz als Indikator für die Robustheit von gesellschaftlichen Prozessen ist allgemein positiv besetzt. Erfolgreiche gesellschaftliche Veränderungen scheinen heute hingegen eher durch Prozesse des Experimentierens unter Bedingungen von Nichtwissen gekennzeichnet zu sein. Matthias Groß untersucht solche Prozesse am Beispiel ökologischer Praxisfelder, in denen zwar Sicherheitserwartungen hoch sind, erkannte Wissenslücken jedoch unüberwindbar scheinen. Er zeigt: Der Erfolg für den Umgang mit diesem für die Gegenwartsgesellschaft typischen Spannungsverhältnis liegt nicht in hoher Resilienz begründet, sondern fußt eher in experimentellen Kulturen, die mit Nichtwissen und unvermeidbaren Unsicherheiten konstruktiv umzugehen gelernt haben.
