    Description: Vulcano, Sicily 1964. After a meeting with him in Cortona, Helle Busacca, a poet and writer from Messina, began drafting an epistolary diary dedicated to Corrado Pavolini, a well-known intellectual and film director of Tuscan origins with whom she had been in love for over twenty years. Through the so far unpublished pages she dedicated to “una storia senza storia” (“a story without history"), the writer brings to life an incandescent theatre of the self, in which the dramatization of personal experience, the self-representative elaboration and the expression of a living and restless inner self combine in a mixture of strongly hybrid characters, which is conveyed by a disruptive communicative force. As the desperately pursued interlocutor becomes increasingly evanescent and unreachable, the voice of a modern tragic heroine emerges unmistakably between claim and confession.

    Description: In light of the dramatic events which have been shocking Ukraine since November 2013, this work’s itinerary aims at functioning as a basis for the formulation of new contact points, for a dialogue between traditions and cultures which nowadays are again being shaken by the events of history. The author examines the self-identification paths of the literary phenomenon of Russian language in Ukraine. With the help of interviews with important representatives of the Ukrainian Russian-speaking literary scene, made on the eve of the so-called 'Ukrainian crisis', the author shall closely observe the origins of the marginal nature of these 'post-Soviet hybrid narratives'.

    Description: Consciously repressed by the current dominating culture, in Italy and Europe in the late mediaeval and early modern age death was addressed with greater confidence and awareness, and sometimes even with serenity. The modes of dying and of conceiving death – and the varied and rich religious and civil rituals that accompanied it – reflected the values and the choices of rich and poor, of kings and peasants, merchants and soldiers, nobles and churchmen, men and women.     Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: This book, the result of a lengthy labour of cataloguing and research, continues the indexing and recording of the unpublished epistolary material conserved in the Dessí fond, launched in 2003 by Chiara Andrei with the edition of the family correspondence (Firenze, FUP). Now, through 1,900 letters from friends and readers, Francesca Nencioni offers a different and more ample overview of the fundamental stages in the life and works of the writer, focusing above all on the years of his university training in Pisa. Of particular interest is the appendix of carefully annotated unpublished texts, which offers 19 letters from Dessí to friends and scholars, the complete two-way correspondence with Walter Binni, and the letters sent to the friend and disciple of the great historian, Delio Cantimori.     Description: Ancient linguistic reflection in India was able to combine the analysis of Sanskrit with the awareness that the language through which this analysis is conducted (Sanskrit) is different from the object it examines. Although this language-tool finds its dimension in the artificial Sanskrit of the sütras - the aphorisms of Påñini's grammar - metalinguistic discourse is not restricted to specialized discourse: common speech abounds in metalinguistic notations. The present work focuses on the testimonies of the grammatical school of Pâininian origin, by trying to retrace the course by which metalanguage left the field of naive linguistics to become an object of the school.

    Description: The exhibition: “La Fisica ad Arcetri. Dalla nascita della Regia Università alle leggi raziali” was organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence and by the Florence Section of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics, in collaboration with the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Florence, the Physical Science and Natural Mathematics Library of the University of Florence, the Science and Technology Foundation, and the “Galileo” Museum of Florence. It was held from May to September 2016 in the Exhibition Hall of the Municipal Historical Archive in via dell'Oriuolo, Florence. The time covered by the exhibition ranges from the birth of the Royal University of Florence (1924) to the enactment of racial laws in Italy by Benito Mussolini’s government (1938). The exhibited material comes from the Municipality's Historical Archive, the Garbasso Archive, the Della Corte Fund, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Science and Technology Foundation and from private collections. The catalogue is published as the third volume of the series of publications associated with the magazine «Il Colle di Galileo».

    Description: War is an event, theme, topos that induces fiction more than any other – stimulating, one might say, superego-like instances of historical fidelity – to press on its own boundaries, inhibit the space of the invention and merge with non-fictional forms of writing (memorial, diary, reportage ...). But in what way and to what extent its literary (as well as theatrical, cinematographical, comic book...) representation has changed – in terms of tone and strategies, in the degree of deformation of the known and shared reality – in the space of a Century that has seen the transformation of war strategies, media coverage and consequently the collective imagination linked to conflicts? Pero cuando se cumplen 500 años, esto es el medio milenio, el aniversario ya entra en un territorio aparte, casi de la leyenda. Conmemorarlo es algo especial. En la historia de la literatura el poder recordarlo está restringido a pocas obras, aquellas que se consideran clásicas y monumentos culturales. En el caso de Amadís de Gaula hay un detalle más que hace notable la permanencia en el tiempo, pues también hay que tomar en cuenta que esta obra fue el paradigma de libros tildados de ociosos cuando no de locos o dañinos.

    Description: The present study analyzes the historical framework of contemporary Ethiopia. Particular attention is given to the economic and political events from the regime change in 1991 to the death of TPLF leader Meles Zenawi in 2012. In line with the Braudelian historical analysis three aspects will be taken into consideration: the Ethiopian Empire under Haile Selassie’s rule, the Ethiopian Revolution of 1974, with the rise to power of the Soviet-aligned Derg, and the ensuing civil war with the Maoist guerillas of the TPLF. In addition, the TPLF regime will be examined according to its three underlying concepts – revolutionary democracy, ethnic federalism, and developmental state – and defining theories – neo-patrimonialism, vanguard capitalism, and political marketplace.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Recent years have seen the publication of a great deal of the work of Ruggero Jacobbi, a legendary figure of Italian twentieth-century culture, thanks to a praiseworthy retrieval of unpublished material conserved in the «A. Bonsanti» contemporary archive of the Gabinetto «G.P. Vieusseux». However, despite so many new pages of poetry and translation, what was still lacking was the writer's voice. The voice which, thanks to the painstaking work of Eleonora Pancani, we can now read (if not hear), as with characteristic dexterity it intermingles verses and music, literature and theatre, politics and entertainment. Ruggero Jacobbi alla radio presents the transcription of several radio programmes of the 70s featuring the genial culture of this multi-faceted intellectual. Jacobbi entertains his audience, discorsing on literary history, the figurative arts and opera, quoting poetry, discussing plays, mingling observations on Goldoni, Pirandello, Bontempelli, Savinio, Pessoa and García Lorca in an engaging anecdotal style that involves the cinema, the theatre and literature, while the great figures of tradition and recent history are interwoven with reminiscences of private life.

    Description: Karel Teige was one of the leading theorists of the Czech avant-garde, and his activity is bound up with the most enriching cultural contributions made to the Czech Republic in the first half of the twentieth century. Proclaiming himself a Marxist, he was frequently at odds with Czech liberal-pragmatic thought. The emergence of European totalitarianism coincided with a major turning-point in his life when, towards the end of the 1930s, he had to come to terms with the Nazi invasion of his country and with the local version of Stalinism. After the War he was marginalised from cultural life and he died of a heart attack while being persecuted in a ferocious campaign of defamation by the Communist Party. The book offers a portrait of this protagonist of European culture and of the process of rediscovery that in the 1960s reintegrated his work and his thought into the extraordinary cultural revival that blossomed in the Prague Spring of 1968.

    Description: This book is an analysis of the literary censorship that Acción Cató?lica (AC) implemented in Spain, through the Secretariat of Bibliographic Orientation (SOB) during the 1940s. The text delves into this system of trial and cultural control to demonstrate that AC imposed its own ideology on its members, redefining literature until turning it into another tool of its social indoctrination. As a consequence, it is demonstrated that AC questioned? the discursive authoritarianism of the Franco regime and, based on the work of literary criticism and the analyzed censor reports, a new perspective is provided from which to reconsider the relationship between Catholicism and the dictatorship. The study of the disagreements and ideological conflicts that arose within the regime reveals the existence of differentiated discourses in both institutions, thus breaking the illusion of homogeneity and apparent harmony. The work is presented as a novel approach to the strategies of cultural repression adopted by the dictatorship and the Church in the postwar period that opens an alternative door for the analysis of the mechanisms of intellectual and social control in that period and, in addition, it connects the existing bibliography about the changing and complex nature of Francoism with cultural studies.

    Description: The fifteenth century is the century of hospital reforms, started in numerous Italian cities in order to overcome the inadequacies of traditional charitable practices of the Middle Ages and to face the social and health emergencies of that period with the help of different tools. Vicenza also participated in the reform process, restructuring the organisation of its care network, especially thanks to the intervention of the urban patriciate, which ruled the government of the major hospitals according to "managerial" criteria. In the fifteenth century the search for the bonum commune (common good) thus found expression in a new and rational way of understanding, financing and dispensing charity, conversing with public and private actors of the urban scene: a new but not so revolutionary way, in which ancient and recent feelings converged, such as Christian pietas, civic religiosity and protection of the social class’ status quo.

    Description: This research offers an integral analysis of the aesthetic thought of the director, playwright and art theorist Nikolaj Nikolaevic Evreinov. The work focuses on the analysis of the treaty The revelation of art, written in Paris in the 1930s, which represents the greatest testimony of the author's research in the aesthetic field. Henceforth, a connection is offered between the known aspects of Evreinov's theatrical thought, relating to the period of the avant-garde in Russia, and others, of a broader nature, which have long been precluded from being known. Through insights on the Russian theatrical history of the early 20th century, reflections touching textual criticism, the history of aesthetic thought and Russian criticism, the complex figure of an artist emerges against the background of the culture expressed by post-revolutionary Russian emigration. An artist who, as an intellectual, begins a dialogue with the Western European cultural tradition. This book thus intends to restore the visibility, as well as an exegetical and historiographic completeness, of Evreinov’s rich legacy as a writer, a philosopher and a critic.

Against this background, the book’s proposal consists in rethinking key confluences related to this problem in order to provide coordinates for a collective understanding and dialogue. The aim of this volume, however, is not to offer abstract methodological considerations, but rather to rely both on concrete studies, out of which a reflection on this conjunction emerges, as well as on the reconstruction of certain research lines featuring a spatiotemporal component. This analytical approach makes a contribution by providing some suggestions for the employment of space and time as coordinates for legal history. Indeed, contrary to those historiographical attitudes reflecting a monistic conception of space and time (as well as a Eurocentric approach), the book emphasises the need for a delocalized global perspective. In general terms, the essays collected in this book intend to take into account the multiplicity of the spatiotemporal confines, the flexibility of those instruments that serve to create chronologies and scenarios, as well as certain processes of adaptation of law to different times and into different spaces. The spatiotemporal dynamism enables historians not only to detect new perspectives and dimensions in foregone themes, but also to achieve new and compelling interpretations of legal history. As far as the relationship between space and law is concerned, the book analyses experiences in which space operates as a determining factor of law, e.g. in terms of a field of action for law. Moreover, it outlines the attempted scales of spatiality in order to develop legal historical research. With reference to the connection between time and law, the volume sketches the possibility of considering the factor of time, not just as a descriptive tool, but as an ascriptive moment (quasi an inner feature) of a legal problem, thus making it possible to appreciate the synchronic aspects of the ‘juridical experience’. As a whole, the volume aims to present spatiotemporality as a challenge for legal history. Indeed, reassessing the value of the spatiotemporal coordinates for legal history implies thinking through both the thematic and methodological boundaries of the discipline."

    Description: Vasyl’ Stus's (1938-1985) poetry is one of the richest and most complex chapters in the literary history of late Soviet Ukraine. His poems are not only born of the author’s talent, but also of his erudition and deep cultural awareness; Stus’s poetry eloquently shows the presence of a significant Modernist trend in the literature of the Ukrainian underground during the Age of Economic stagnation. Stus's Modernism is the ideal evolution of the Ukrainian poetic culture of the first decades of the century, and develops thanks to an intense intertextual dialogue with the European literature. Stus’s reception of Russian and German poetry, in addition to becoming the model for nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century Ukrainian poetry, proves fundamental to fully understand his work’s literary palimpsest, which this volume offers a comprehensive reading of, from the early stages to the maturity’s collections.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: The Spanish civil war is considered a key point of analysis of the first half of the 1900s because of the peculiar context in which it developed, the ideologies that provoked it and for the controversies that still accompany it. An event of this magnitude has had and continues to have a great resonance in literature; this essay compares two authors at the antipodes, which well summarize the socio-political debate that accompanies the theme: José María Gironella, author close to the regime, and Juan Benet, hermetic writer. The contrast between the motivations and objectives of the two writers is accompanied by incompatible narrative choices. With memory as both a judge and a defendant, the authors open two different paths of communication with the reader: from history to man, from man to history.

    Description: This volume contains Italian contributions to the XV Slavists’ International Congress (Minsk, 20-27 August 2013). In the wake of the best Italian Slavic tradition, the lecturers present a wide range of themes in different languages, ranging from the Cyril-Methodian question to the critical reflection on contemporary authors. Despite the diversity of disciplinary and methodological approaches - from paleography to textual analysis, from literary comparative studies to sociolinguistics - these contributions show that Italian Slavistic studies maintains their roots, critically developing previous studies and opening up new perspectives for research, while a new generation of scholars is born. As in the past, Italian studies on Slavistics are playing a significant role not only in Italy's cultural relations with the Slavic countries, but more generally on the perspective of a vast and complex process of integration of the various European cultures, which goes further beyond the borders of the European Union; a process in which the Slavic world, with its variety of languages and cultures, is one of the main actors.

    Description: This volume presents the recovery, cataloging, and valorization project of the collection donated by the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) to the Mineralogical Cabinet of the Collegio Nazareno in Rome in 1785. This donation represents, so far, the only geo-mineralogical collection belonging to Joseph II with certainty. The specimen cataloging records, drawn according to the ICCD national catalographic standards for the mineralogical (BNM) and petrographic (BNPE) heritage, are freely available on the Catalogo Generale dei Beni Culturali website. The collection is open to visitors in its permanent exhibition at the Istituto San Giuseppe Calasanzio in Rome. This volume has been realized within the project PANN20.00605 “Dono imperiale.     Description: Let's try to imagine a world where scientific illiteracy is the exception rather than the rule. That is a world of subjects who are, in the vast majority, informed and aware of the main ongoing scientific debates, and who are capable of critically and independently thinking about them. A world in which everyone could dispose of the resources to develop a thoughtful opinion on cloning techniques, genetically modified organisms, new anti-cancer therapies or even on the origin of life on Earth and the final destiny of the universe. If this world were possible, what would it look like? The scepticism about the feasibility of such a scenario is justified, however it is equally undeniable that during the twentieth century there have been such profound transformations in the relationship between science and public opinion as to make the question at least legitimate and worthy of an answer.

    Description: This study deals with the first works by Don DeLillo, from Americana (1971) to Running Dog (1978), but it also extends its investigation horizon to his following works. The work deals specifically with the conception of time, and the way it is represented in the texts of the American author. By integrating the philosophy of time with narratology, the volume offers critical reflections aimed at identifying the type of poetics through which DeLillo articulates time in his work. In particular, the centrality of the perception of time in his novels and, more specifically, the concentration of the plots in certain moments, the oblique presence of the influence of Samuel Beckett's work in the representation of duration and the attention of the author to the double temporality of the cinematographic image and its hidden aesthetic potential are highlighted. Therefore, time becomes the conceptual context in which the textures of these texts, and the themes characterising them, find a resolution. In the representation of time, in the microscopic analysis and in the slow motion of some specific time segments, DeLillo's narrative traces the possibilities of an indefinable and mysterious perception of reality and history.

    Description: This work outlines the phenomenon of conversions to Catholicism which took place in Florence between the 17th and 18th century, and starts by reconstructing the history of the House of Catechumens. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to a noblewoman from Florence’s bequest, the Institute offered hospitality to "infidels" of all origins, and the number of conversions increased considerably. Such liberality ended up causing a serious economic crisis, which the Lorraine Grand Dukes tried to solve in the 18th century by restricting the field of action to Tuscan subjects only. However, there was no lack of abuse and interference by clergymen, especially towards Jews.

    Description: This book on Slavic matriarchy is the result of the studies and researches that Evel Gasparini carried out over the span of his lifetime. Intrigued by the possibility of a close link between the collective ownership of the land and the ancient agricultural-matriarchal substrate of Slav culture, Gasparini launched on the titanic enterprise of analysing the archaeological and historical sources of early Slavic civilisation. Basing himself on a concept of culture elaborated in the ethnological field, he brought to light certain contradictions in the application of the Indo-European paradigm to Slavic culture and identified a series of elements illustrating the matriarchal substrate. Exploiting an uncommon knowledge of cultural anthropology and profound linguistic competencies, in this book Gasparini maps out a complex panorama ranging from the economy to the social structure and from the religious traditions to music and dance. Out of print for some time, the book is now proposed in a new, more convenient form, complete with an appendix on Finns and Slavs – which was originally intended as another chapter in the book but was then left out – a detailed preface by Gasparini's disciple Remo Faccani, and a bibliography of the scholar's oeuvre edited by Donatella Possamai.

    Description: 1938 in Italy is marked by the introduction of the racial laws which ejected Jews from schools and universities, preceding similar measures in Germany. The aim of the author is to illustrate the debates in parliament around the Day of Memory and on holocaust denial before dealing with the events of 1938, in order to underline their contemporary significance and to interpret them as linked and not separable. After showing the progress that has been made in terms of historical research and the difficulties that the political world has experienced in taking this work into account, the volume examines the losses in qualitative terms in Italian university teaching and the huge difficulties encountered by professors who had lost their posts and struggled to return to their former positions. The case of Florence is studied closely within the framework of the transformations to university institutions which took place during the Fascist period. The indifference or the silence of the intellectuals, including Gentile, is underlined.

    Description: This volume reconstructs the birth and evolution of the Italian literary history in France and England during the 19th century. In the French context, a comparative reading of the works by Pierre-Louis Ginguené and Jean Charles Léonard Simonde de Sismondi confirms that the subject had already reached its maturity at the beginning of the century. On the other hand, in England, the path leading from Ugo Foscolo to John Addington Symonds passes through multiple genres and sources, including collections of biographies, anthologies of translations, travel books, histories of individual literary genres, histories from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. At the end of this path, a software pipeline is tested and developed with the aim of expanding the analysis through the computational tools of the Digital Humanities.

    Description: Drawing on different disciplinary and historiographic traditions, the volume offers a series of summaries and thematic insights, functional to contextualising the peculiar case of the episcopate of Bobbio, founded in 1014 in the Piacenza Apennines as a development of the famous monastery of San Colombano. The considerable documentary source available thanks to the recent reorganization of the diocesan archives, which made it possible to illustrate the cathedral library as well, required an overall presentation and specific attention to the constitutive acts of the new institution. The deepening of the historical context, within which the subsequent diocesan story unfolds, was conducted in relationship with the monastery and with a selection of the nearby cities. The analysis of the settlement dynamics of the Bobbian center and of the structural developments of the church and of the episcopal complex are counterpointed by both in-depth analyses aimed at the organization of the territory, captured in its civil, religious, welfare articulations, and treatments of cultural and liturgical components that animate this Church.

His correspondence with one of the most eminent Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century, as transcribed and lavishly annotated here by Monica Graceffa, reveals him not only as a committed intellectual devoted to the study of ancient and modern art, but also as a caustic and playful friend. His dialogue with Giuseppe Dessí commenced in their youth, when Dessí was an amateur painter on the way to maturity, who instead rapidly developed into a mature writer and attentive connoisseur of all forms of art. In addition to their studies and mutual friends (including Claudio Varese and Maria Lai), they also shared an interest in painting and in what Dessí was experiencing (his moves, his political passion) and what he was writing (fiction, drama, essays); important in this regard are the letters touching on the collaboration of both on the Sardinian issue of Pietro Calamandrei's «Il Ponte».

Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Studying the dialogue between literature and philosophy in the Spanish exile in Latin America requires a historiographical effort, since the exile is framed in a historical before and after: in the "before" of its traditional context, that of the ideas belonging to the place of origin prior to exile. These ideas, capable of developing or changing in the "after" of the post-exile world (in this case, the Spanish-American world), give life to the poetic and philosophical works gestated in the land where the exiles found the protection and shelter of a new homeland: Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela. This book offers interdisciplinary elements to map the paths in which a group of authors whose life and work was marked, directly or indirectly, by the experience of exile cross: Max Aub, Luis Cernuda, José Gaos, Manuel García Morente, Juan Larrea , Eduardo Nicol, Alfonso Reyes, Josep Solanes and María Zambrano. The texts thematize the work, context, and influences of writers, poets, and philosophers who arrived in Latin America fleeing political persecution and the Civil War in Spain. Many of the exiles saw in the nation that welcomed them the opportunity for a new beginning, others, on the other hand, the place of eternal nostalgia and permanent mourning for their lost home. In all cases, this circumstance was reflected in the work of the exile authors discussed here, in their efforts to reinvent literature, philosophy or the relationship between the two, as well as in their contributions to the dissemination of these two disciplines in organs cultural institutions such as educational institutions, publishing houses and magazines.

    Description: With the additional help of archival material, the first part of this volume reconstructs the history of the Institute for Eastern Europe (Ipeo), founded in Rome in 1921, whose activity was characterized by a remarkable editorial production closely connected to the birth and development of Italian Slavic Studies. Despite the inevitable coexistence with fascism and the submission, somehow, to a line of conduct which especially in the 1930s accompanied the regime’s policy, the Ipeo’s activity was marked above all by a sincere desire to spread knowledge of a world which was still quite unknown in the Italian context under many aspects. The Ipeo operated until the end of World War II, when the government funding and even the political and cultural assumptions which had favoured its birth ceased because of the changed geopolitical context, determined by the end of the conflict. The second part of the volume covers the General alphabetical catalogue of all Ipeo’s publications, accompanied by a Chronological catalogue and by an Index of authors, editors, translators and preface writers.

    Description: Las ciudades del deseo explores the representations of gender, sexuality, and urban space in contemporary narratives from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. By examining a corpus of novels published since 2000, this book shows how the changes in urban landscape create a new image of the city that destroys traditional gender roles and produces different discourses on sexuality. At moments of crisis in political agendas that took place between 1990 and 2000, queer subjects became spokespeople outlining new national projects on each island, while claiming space in the national imaginary. The nation is no longer built on blood ties, patriarchal norms, or biological procreation, but rather starts incorporating previously excluded racial identities and sexual practices. By juxtaposing the narratives of the three countries and putting into dialogue the topics of nationality, sexuality, urban space, and sex tourism, Las ciudades del deseo breaks away from a tradition that tends to study them separately. The book contributes new perspectives on an emerging culture of resistance to heteronormative dynamics and power structures that is developing simultaneously in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. It sheds light on larger connections between literature and LGBTQ activism in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.Las ciudades del deseo explora las representaciones del género, la sexualidad y el espacio urbano en la narrativa contemporánea de Cuba, la República Dominicana y Puerto Rico. La familia como metáfora de la nación deja de basarse en los lazos de sangre, normas patriarcales y procreación biológica. En cambio, empieza a incorporar identidades raciales y prácticas sexuales. Yuxtaponiendo las narrativas de los tres países y poniendo en diálogos los temas de la nación, la sexualidad, el espacio urbano y el turismo sexual, Las ciudades del deseo rompe con una tradición que tiende a explorarlos por separado. L’incunabolo, che si conserva presso la Biblioteca Estense di Modena con segnatura α. J. 7. 9 (1), rappresenta uno dei rari esemplari superstiti della tiratura del 1495. L’opera si configura come la più ampia attestazione narrativa in volgare di un interesse verso la storia e il culto di san Geminiano, vescovo di Modena nel IV secolo. Analizzandone il contesto storico-letterio, culturale e linguistico, si riconosce nella Gloriosissimi Geminiani Vita del Parente un testo di produzione locale a carattere popolare, che attinge alle forme e ai generi letterari della tradizione del Trecento e del Quattrocento, uno strumento di devozione rivolto in particolare agli illitterati, anche per l’alternarsi delle immagini alla prosa e ai versi.

Roberto Blancarte muestra cómo el Islam se convierte en un elemento de identidad supranacional y civilizacional que a su vez genera el islamismo; una ideología con múltiples manifestaciones, desde las más abiertas a la modernidad, hasta las más cerradas a ella. El fundamentalismo es sólo una de las muy variadas expresiones del Islam y del islamismo. En este estudio se recontruye, a partir de la experiencia histórica de Afganistán y su región circundante (Golfo Pérsico-Asia Central-Asia del Sur) la formación del pensamiento revolucionario islámico, a través de las distintas respuestas ideológicas a la penetración occidental, evidente desde el siglo XVIII. El autor demuestra también que un factor esencial de las recientes intervenciones de Occidente en Afganistán, cuyos últimos ejemplos son los de la Unión Soviética y los Estados Unidos de América, ha sido el temor a la expansión de la revolución islámica.

    Description: Ivan Aksenov is one of the most neglected figures of early 20th Century Russian literature. The few scholars who have noticed his great originality interpret his verses above all as an application of the principles of Cubist painting in poetry, in the light of the experiences of Mayakovsky &Co.; these investigations denote a poor knowledge of the author, who did not fail to declare the incompatibility between the two artistic media. This book is therefore the first systematic study of Aksenov's poetry, starting from a reflection on the philological state of the texts, to move on to the reconstruction of his aesthetic thought and to integral analyzes of poetic compositions. An unprecedented theory of art emerges from this - which develops ideas of Tolstoy, Vjaceslav Ivanov and Freud - and a production in verses characterized by daring metric innovations and a flow-of-consciousness poetics of the with a subtly humorous urbanism that recalls authors such as Apollinaire and Cendrars. It is thus intended to highlight the peculiarity of Aksenov, the only Russian poet from the Futurist area to have participated, even for a few months, in the cultural life of Paris in the 1910s and an advocate at home of themes and stylistic elements partly related to the French esprit nouveau.

    Description: The concept of the literary canon is one of the most debated and controversial in the western intellectual tradition. This book offers ten contributions by Italian scholars of Anglo-American culture addressing the way in which the concept of the literary canon holds out against areas traditionally considered as external or extraneous to it. The essays range over different topics: the etymological analysis of the term "canon"; the relations between canon and performativity; paraliterature – a universe populated by non-hierarchic genres; the relations between post-colonial literature and the canon; postmodern biofiction; studies on translation and finally gay and lesbian literature. The book ends with a meditation on the innovations wrought on the Anglo-American canon by the virtual world of Internet and with a reading proposal originating from a different area of literary studies. Taken as a whole, the intention of the book is to pave the way to democratisation and pluralism in literary studies, going beyond the limitations set by the traditional scale of values of the "western canon". It proposes a frequentation of the geographical and cultural borderlines and hence of the areas of resistance that such borderlines pose to the dominant conceptual hierarchies within and around us, enabling us to glimpse an original future for literature and for western culture in a broader sense.

    Description: “A humanity that forgets Buchenwald, Auschwitz, Mauthausen, I cannot accept it. I write for us to remember”: this was Giorgio Bassani’s answer to anyone who asked him about the origin of his writing. Guided by these words, Anna Dolfi has woven a fabric of suggestions that have pushed Italian and foreign scholars and even some protagonists to reflect on narrators, poets, essayists, historians, philosophers, publishers, artists, who have been induced by the history of a difficult affiliation to a sort of fatal, testimonial moral duty. The result was a book of great novelty for style and reading proposals which, starting from the ancient Jewish tradition, from legends relived in a political and libertarian key, after the Romanticism and the German 19th Century, brings to the fore the modern voices of European and North American literature/culture, and of the Yiddish and Eastern tradition. The names of the great Jewish intellectuals of Central Europe are recurring: Canetti, Schulz, Döblin, Antelme, Wiesel, Sebald, Oz, Grossman, Nelly Sachs, Irène Némirovsky..., among the Italians those of Loria, Natalia Ginzburg, Giacomo Debenedetti, Cesare Segre..., but especially Giorgio Bassani and Primo Levi who, in order to keep the memory of the tragedy of persecution and the Shoah, have chosen to place their entire work “entre la vie et la mort”. Eventually, all this leads to remembering how the duty to testify is linked to the affection and work of mourning, to the lasting effect of an immediate wound that nourishes the connection between the truth of what happened and what one might call the “truth of creation”, le vrai du roman.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: The volume, originating from the 5th Slavic Linguistics Meeting (Rome, 25-27 September 2014), reflects the state of the most recent research carried out in Italy in this discipline. It aims to continue the tradition already started at the end of the 1980s from the series Morphosyntactic problems of Slavic languages (Bologna 1988, 1990, 1991; Padua 1994, 1995), which has been recently renewed in the volumes published after the Meetings of Bergamo (2007), Padua (2008), Forlì (2010) and Milan (2014). This contribution testifies an expansion of interest beyond the boundaries of morphosyntax, towards other areas of theoretical and applied linguistics, such as pragmatics, semantics, language acquisition and sociolinguistics. Due to the variety of topics and methodologies used, the publication could interest not only those who carry out both theoretical and applied research in the field of Slavic languages, but also scholars in General linguistics.

    Description: Scarti, tracce e frammenti: controarchivio e memoria dell’umano. Literature and art, increasingly interested in the dark side of production, now appear as a reservoir of fragments and waste of all sorts. The attraction towards scraps, conceived as anti-goods, testifies the existence of a parallel world where the myths of growth and productivity show their tragic face. Through different textualities and media, waste emerges as a testimony of a subversive marginality from which unexpected perspectives, which can undermine the established order, arise. The volume, using the image of waste, offers a hidden or marginalized counter history, which however 'returns' overbearingly in order to give contemporaneity its shapeless substance.

    Description: «The good comic novel». La narrativa comica di Henry Fielding e l’importanza dell’esempio cervantino analyses the influence of Don Quixote on Henry Fielding’s fiction, starting with a survey of the reception of the Spanish novel in England. Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones are analyzed and compared with the Spanish novel, from which Fielding overtly borrowed some characters, episodes, and Cervantes’ parodic strategies. Fielding’s and Cervantes’s narrative proceeded from the parodic deconstruction and subsequent innovation of previous literature, with the main purpose of teaching and amusing the reader at the same time. Finally, the volume examines the role of Fielding and Cervantes in the rise of the fictional and the self-conscious novel.

    Description: In April 1957, a social revolt of unprecedented magnitudes in the history of Chile occurred. The proportion of the population involved was immense, and important parts of the city were seen for hours and even days, outside the control of the State. The dawn of metropolitan Santiago was illuminated with burning barricades, which were nothing more than the signs of street fighting, looting, fires, and finally the flashes of police and military carbines, rifles and machine guns. Six months later, in the southern part of the city, where Santiago was gradually dissolving beyond the Zanjón de La Aguada, thousands of poor homeless families occupied and took over the former La Feria farm, and from there they founded the current town. The victory. Both events are precipitations of complex processes of radicalization and popular politicization. Taken together, the events of 1957 constitute a milestone of rupture and strategic leap in the historical composition of the proletarian universe of Santiago.

    Description: How are the words and bodies arranged in the poem? How do they come into contact from their latitude, longitude and depth, from the verbal substance that defines them? Fragile matter: poetics for the 21st century in Latin America and Spain aspires to answer these questions through various approaches to current poetry, taking into account the limits, conflicts and new conditions of possibility of our being in common. To do so, several studies are proposed on the dissident aesthetics that are making their way on both sides of the Atlantic, on the latest performative drifts of lyrical discourse and the implications of our growing transmediality. Added to them is a series of inquiries about the poets of the 21st century and their intervention of the word through proposals that disturb the structure of the intimate and the collective, sexual identity or the family, provoking alternative forms of subjectivity. Starting from different national, cultural and historical horizons, these essays analyze the politics of the common, understood as a symbolic and material practice that runs through poetic discourse. They explore their space for emancipation and their work with the new articulations of violence. They think of poetry and its fragility as a condition for resistance.

    Description: The book analyses the history of the Jesuat congregation, highlighting the elements of connection and comparison with the social contexts, then describing the origin and the most ancient events of the female branch of the congregation, and the memory of the meeting between the "founder" of the Jesuats and the "foundress" of the Gesuate. The iconographic memory of the initiator of the congregation, Giovani Colombini, the collection of the lauds of the Jesuat Bianco da Siena, and the fortune of the 15th-century Life of Giovanni Colombini, written by Feo Belcari, are also investigated. Then the research reconstructs the constellation of groups, religious experiments and bearers of ideas and devotions that were linked to the Jesuats and, in particular, to the convents of Milan, Siena, Lucca, Venice and Rome and the sanctuaries managed by the congregation. The congregational sociability is analysed along its lines: the practice of work as pharmacists and the cultivation of spiritual friendships with prominent people such as the Countess of Guastalla, Lodovica Torelli. Finally, the erudite use of Colombini's Epistolario as a language text is studied. The volume closes with a documentary appendix on the Jesuat convent of Chiusi.

    Description: This volume brings together 474 letters that Luciano Anceschi and Oreste Macrí wrote each other for 50 years. The strong point of the deep (and maybe unexpected) friendship between the two critics – based on the shared and fierce activism, on the common outlook of an «uncompromising humanism» – is curiously a dialectical progression that almost always excludes the perspective of a total agreement. It is a dialogue that springs from differences, and that exhorts to think about them. After the Second World War, the protagonists of the correspondence started to relaxedly discuss about the present and future of the European cultural civilization, the meaning of a literature that seems to illustrate a permanent state of crisis, and the events that gave life to the literary debate until the threshold of the new millennium, between post-hermetic tendencies and new experimentalisms.

    Description: In a perspective of local history that combines problem analysis with a reconstruction accessible even to non-specialists, this book addresses the economy, society and institutions of a rural community of the Tuscan Apennines. The community of Raggiolo is portrayed over a long span of time ranging from the late centuries of the Middle Ages up to the end of the eighteenth century. We are thus offered a picture of the Casentino mountains which reveals - in the centuries-old intertwining of mountain economy, social equality, sharing of the management of the local administration and the goods belonging to the collectivity - one of the main reasons for the resistance to change which was to mark the end of the ancien regime.
    Description: In una prospettiva di storia locale che intreccia l'analisi problematica alla ricostruzione accessibile anche ai non specialisti, il volume studia economia, società, istituzioni di una comunità rurale dell'Appennino toscano. La comunità di Raggiolo viene colta in una lunga durata che dai secoli finali del Medioevo si protrae fino alla fine del Settecento. In tal modo viene offerto un quadro della montagna casentinese che coglie nel secolare intreccio fra economia montana, eguaglianza sociale, condivisione della gestione dell'ammistrazione locale e dei beni appartenenti alla collettività, uno dei principali motivi della resistenza al cambiamento che segnerà la fine dell'antico regime.

    Description: The volume reconstructs the role of the "art objects" in the renewal of identity (social, political and cultural) of the Mannelli family, among the oldest families of the Florentine patriciate. During the 17th Century the main exponents adopted a lifestyle inspired by the Medici court, gradually dismantling, but at different times, the dress of the merchant. The analysis of the main town and countryside residences and of the displaying of the objects of art, conducted on a documentary basis and with the “display of art” critical tools, returns the fundamental stages of the renewal process and, together with numerous autonomous episodes of unpublished patronage and collecting, the emergence of common narrative strategies of historical and political identity through art objects.

    Description: Poetry as a "philosophical frontier" is the concept focused in this book on the poetry of Paul Celan. It is not precipitate to consider that the peculiarity of Celan's poetry and its reception lies in the persistent and ongoing interest displayed by philosophical criticism. Adopting an inclusive formula that goes beyond the mere notion of a "philosophical space", Massimo Baldi and Fabrizio Desideri aim to bring together readings and interpretative theories that are significantly diverse, albeit marked by the common intention of focusing the radical singularity of Celan's writing. All the essays presented here effectively reveal an attention to that engagement inherent in the letter of the poetic dictate, in the pungency of its inscription, which we must respect and listen to if we wish to understand Celan.

L’idea di dedicare alla produzione artistico-artigianale un Progetto di ricerca è scaturita da anni di lavoro sul campo sia nel settore delle discipline archeologiche sia storico-artistiche, che hanno evidenziato sempre più quanto la lunga tradizione artigianale di cui la Sardegna va fiera, che si esprime in manufatti in ceramica, vetro, metallo, pietra, legno e tessuto, anche solo ad un primo sguardo riveli una trasmissione di ‘saperi’ tecnici e artistici che si mantiene viva attraverso i secoli.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

The book deals with the analysis of the religious landscape marked by the communities of the Poor Clares and Dominicans nuns. The investigation of the territorial structure of the various kingdoms takes place through five paths: knowledge of poorly studied areas in female monastic topography; understanding of foundational dynamics and the role of communities of religious mulieres; the dynamics of the urban layout and the processes of communication and action that created the monastic landscape; the importance of patronage and female sponsorship in foundational models and cultural promotion; the analysis of devotional practices and the material culture of communities in a functional, spatial and performative context. El presente volumen es el resultado de la investigación del proyecto Claustra. Atlas de espiritualidad femenina. El libro se ocupa del análisis del paisaje religioso marcado por las comunidades de clarisas y dominicas.     Description: Wackenroder's conception of music is strongly influenced by the musical thought of the composer Johann Friedrich Reichardt, who was a romantic music teacher, friend and mentor of Wackenroder, whom he introduced to the 'realm of sounds'. Reichardt was the author of numerous essays on music and of the unique Musikerroman from the Enlightenment period (Leben des berühmten Tonkünstlers Heinrich Wilhelm Gulden nachher genannt Guglielmo Enrico Fiorino, 1779). Wackenroder e Reichardt: musica e letteratura nel primo Romanticismo tedesco (“Wackenroder and Reichardt: music and literature in the first German Romanticism”) compares the literary works of the two authors and investigates the results of their influence. The work retraces the transition from the conception of music during the Enlightenment, linked to the social function of art, to the idea of an 'absolute' music of the Romantic era, determining the artist's problematic existence.
