Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Gullies on Mars resemble terrestrial gullies involved in the transport of abundant material down steep slopes by liquid water. However, liquid water should not be stable at the Martian surface. The articles in this volume present the two main opposing theories for Martian gully formation: climate-driven melting of surficial water-ice deposits and seasonal dry-ice sublimation. The evidence presented ranges from remote-sensing observations, to experimental simulations, to comparison with Earth analogues. The opposing hypotheses imply either that Mars has been unusually wet in the last few million years or that it has remained a cold dry desert – both with profound implications for understanding the water budget of Mars and its habitability. The debate questions the limits of remote-sensing data and how we interpret active processes on extra-terrestrial planetary surfaces, even beyond those on Mars, as summarized by the review paper at the beginning of the book.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Winner of the 2006 Giovanni Sartori Book Award, given by the American Political Science Association's Qualitative Methods Section. The use of case studies to build and test theories in political science and the other social sciences has increased in recent years. Many scholars have argued that the social sciences rely too heavily on quantitative research and formal models and thus have attempted to develop and refine rigorous methods for using case studies. This text presents a comprehensive analysis of research methods using case studies and examines the place of case studies in social science methodology. It argues that case studies, statistical methods, and formal models are complementary rather than competitive. The book explains how to design case study research that will produce results useful to policymakers and it emphasizes the importance of developing policy-relevant theories. It offers three major contributions to case study methodology: an emphasis on the importance of within-case analysis, a detailed discussion of process tracing, and development of the concept of typological theories. Case Studies and Theory Development in the Social Sciences will be particularly useful to graduate students and scholars in social science methodology and the philosophy of science, as well as to those designing new research projects, and will contribute greatly to the broader debate about scientific methods.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract: A deep rotary core drilling project in 1957 at Site 2 on the Greenland ice sheet (76°59'N, 56°04'W provided ice core to a depth of 411 m. The vertical variation in bulk density, macroscopic structure, oxygen isotope ratios, ionic constituents, and extraterrestrial dust (black spherules) were analyzed using both field and laboratory techniques . These data permit the direct estimate of annual accumulation layers in the core. Continuous stratigraphic measurements and observations were made over the upper 110 m of the profile and detailed physical and chemical analyses were made on continuous lo 3 to 3.9-m core increments at 100, 200, 300 and 411-m depths. The average total ionic concentration in the ice sheet ranges between 0.65 and 1.35 mg/liter. The annual global mass deposit of black spherules as calculated from these studies varies from 2.10 x 10^5 metric tons in 700 year old ice to 6.57 x 10^5 metric tons in 12 year old firn. The oxygen isotope ratio variation provides the best means of estimating accumulation at depth. Results of the investigations indicate rates of net snow accumulation of 42.3, 34.2, 37.4, 41.1 and 41.6 g/cm^2 -yr at the surface, A.D. c. 1773, c. 1513, c. 1233 and c. 934 respectively. Accumulation data and other physical and chemical evidence allow climatological inferences to be made over the 10-century profile. The ice core record shows that snow accumulation and temperature in A. D. 934 were similar to today, followed by a gradual decrease in accumulation to a minimum around the late 18th century and an increase in both accumulation and temperature from A. D. 1773 to 1957 and following.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This book complements the Geological Society's Special Publication 362: Military Aspects of Hydrogeology. Generated under the auspices of the Society's History of Geology and Engineering Groups, it contains papers from authors in the UK, USA, Germany and Austria. Substantial papers describe some innovative engineering activities, influenced by geology, undertaken by the armed forces of the opposing nations in World War I. These activities were reactivated and developed in World War II. Examples include trenching from World War I, tunnelling and quarrying from both wars, and the use of geologists to aid German coastal fortification and Allied aerial photographic interpretation in World War II. The extensive introduction and other chapters reveal that ‘military geology’ has a longer history. These chapters relate to pre-twentieth century coastal fortification in the UK and the USA; conflict in the American Civil War; long-term ‘going’ assessments for German forces; tunnel repair after wartime route denial in Hong Kong; and tunnel detection after recent insurgent improvisation in Iraq.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Techniques were established by which quantitative data can be obtained from patterned ground features. The field work was carried out during the summers of 1954 and 1955 near Camp Tuto, Greenland. The investigation site is described, and extensive data are presented. The soil materials composing the patterned ground features were found to be of common mineralogy, grain size distribution, and plasticity. The chemical nature of the soils does not contribute to feature formation; it is the mechanical processes acting on these materials that are important. A sharp rise in the soil water content in the form of ice was consistently noted when passing through the base of the active layer into the present permafrost. A net heave occurred at both feature center and border locations, The magnitude of the heave is about 0.05 ft for the centers and 0.03 ft for the borders. Feature age was estimated to be about 150 yr. Vertical sorting occurs over the entire depth of the active layer but radial sorting is confined to the upper 2 ft. Groundwater flow occurs mostly through the feature borders, and incoming radiation has an important effect on the progression of the frost line. The progression of thaw is very rapid and, by the end of summer, the thaw penetration is greatest under the feature centers.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The editors present a state-of-the-art overview on the Physics of Space Weather and its effects on technological and biological systems on the ground and in space. It opens with a general introduction on the subject, followed by a historical review on the major developments in the field of solar terrestrial relationships leading to its development into the up-to-date field of space weather. Specific emphasis is placed on the technological effects that have impacted society in the past century at times of major solar activity. Chapter 2 summarizes key milestones, starting from the base of solar observations with classic telescopes up to recent space observations and new mission developments with EUV and X-ray telescopes (e.g., STEREO), yielding an unprecedented view of the sun-earth system. Chapter 3 provides a scientific summary of the present understanding of the physics of the sun-earth system based on the latest results from spacecraft designed to observe the Sun, the interplanetary medium and geospace. Chapter 4 describes how the plasma and magnetic field structure of the earth`s magnetosphere is impacted by the variation of the solar and interplanetary conditions, providing the necessary science and technology background for missions in low and near earth`s orbit. Chapter 5 elaborates the physics of the layer of the earth`s upper atmosphere that is the cause of disruptions in radio-wave communications and GPS (Global Positioning System) errors, which is of crucial importance for projects like Galileo. In Chapters 6-10, the impacts of technology used up to now in space, on earth and on life are reviewed.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract: A consistent theory of plane plastic deformation of soil is formulated by assuming soil as an ideal material that has constant cohesion and friction angle. Such an ideal soil is an extension of the ideal metal that has, in the terminology of soil mechanics, cohesion only. After a review of the existing theories from which the present theory has emerged, the mathematical expression referred to as the "compression characteristic" is developed. Then the system of differential equations is shown by the theory of characteristic lines. Many mathematical and physical problems remain to be solved before the perfect explanation of the plasticity of ideal soil will be attained.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Uranium Deposits of the World, in three volumes, comprises an unprecedented compilation of data and descriptions of the uranium regions in Asia, USA, Latin America and Europe. With the first, the Asia volume Prof. Dahlkamp presents a complete uranium-resource reference based on the latest research and also gives access to previously unavailable data. The basic purpose, the presentation of an overview and data of uranium geology, is completed by a typological classification of uranium deposits using additional data from deposits worldwide. This classification forms the base for deposit descriptions throughout the three volumes, structured by countries. Each country and region receives an analytical overview followed by the geologically- and economically-relevant synopsis of the individual regions and fields. The presentations are structured in three major sections: (a) location and magnitude of uranium regions, districts, and deposits, (b) principal features of regions and districts, and (c) detailed characteristics of selected ore fields and deposits. This includes sections on geology, alteration, mineralization, shape and dimensions of deposits, isotopes data, ore control and recognition criteria, and metallogenesis. The volume also provides readers access to the voluminous literature via the comprehensive bibliography of uranium-related publications. Abundantly illustrated with information-laden maps and charts throughout, this reference work is an indispensable tool for geologists, mining companies, government agencies, and others with interest in key natural resources. The three volumes of Uranium Deposits of the World are available as a set or individually. Also accessible (as a set and separate volumes) as a e-ref on springerlink.com. The originally planned fourth volume with Australia, Oceania, and Africa will not be published after the author suddenly deceased.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: If dangerous climate change is still to be avoided, a reversal of current trends must be achieved within the next ten years, and greenhouse gas emissions worldwide must be halved by 2050 compared with a 1990 baseline. However, there is a widening gap between the action that is urgently needed and current climate policy. The German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) is therefore convinced that a new climate policy dynamic is required worldwide. Currently, all eyes are on Germany: its Presidency of the Council of the European Union and Presidency of G8 offer a dual opportunity to drive climate protection forward. The Council‘s core messages are as follows: Climate protection is both worthwhile and feasible: Investing in climate protection is economically efficient, as the costs of effective climate protection are far lower than the costs of inaction. The longer we delay, the more expensive climate protection will become. For successful climate protection, a transformation of the world‘s energy systems is key. Such a transformation is technologically feasible, marking a shift away from fossil towards renewable energy sources, and requires rapid utilization of the high efficiency potentials. Further development of the UN climate convention: A consensus on the mitigation target must be forged and enshrined in the convention. To this end, the Council recommends the adoption of a global temperature guard rail limiting the rise in near-surface air temperature to a maximum of 2 °C relative to the pre-industrial value – equivalent to stabilizing the concentration of greenhouse gases below 450 ppm CO2eq. The Kyoto Protocol must be developed further and offer effective incentives for the transformation of energy systems. The industrialized countries should commit to ambitious reduction targets, while mechanisms must be established for the progressive, but differentiated integration of the newly industrializing and developing countries into commitment regimes. The issue of adaptation must also be given appropriate priority. This must include firm pledges from the industrialized countries on technological cooperation and financing. Making the most of the G8 Summit at Heiligendamm: Fresh initiatives from the heads of state and government are required to inject new life into the faltering climate process. The G8 countries and the five major newly industrializing countries, as the world‘s leading political and economic nations, should now send out clear signals and agree an ‚innovation pact on decarbonization‘. By adopting joint parameters for efficiency and CO2 emissions standards, developing a Road Atlas for the decarbonization of energy systems, and promoting technological cooperation, the G8+5 countries have the potential to become the driving force in international climate policy. Reaffirming the European Union‘s leading role: The European Union should expand its leading role in international climate protection. To maintain its credibility, it must achieve its agreed emissions reduction targets. The EU must demonstrate the viability of climate protection and provide fresh impetus for energy efficiency and renewables worldwide. The European Union‘s Emissions Trading Scheme should be developed further and improved as a matter of urgency.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract: Pendulum steering, a new concept of attitude stabilization for thermal probes or coring drills in ice, eliminates instability. The center of support is placed above the center of gravity. A lower and upper hot point produce melt penetration. The ratio of their power levels is the basis for stabilization, which is provided by the automatic control of the heater in the upper hot point. This feature makes possible a single thermal probe design that is suitable for all ice cap temperatures and a wide range of penetration rates (i.e., applied power levels). The simplicity of a thermal probe with pendulum steering suggests availability at modest cost and versatility as a widely applicable tool.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Although it is generally accepted that the Arctic Ocean is a very sensitive and important region for changes in the global climate, this region is the last major physiographic province of the earth whose short-and long-term geological history is much less known in comparison to other ocean regions. This lack of knowledge is mainly caused by the major technological/logistic problems in reaching this harsh, ice-covered region with normal research vessels and in retrieving long and undisturbed sediment cores. During the the last about 20 years, however, several international and multidisciplinary ship expeditions, including the first scientific drilling on Lomonosov Ridge in 2004, a break-through in Arctic research, were carried out into the central Artic and its surrounding shelf seas. Results from these expeditions have greatly advanced our knowledge on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironments. Published syntheses about the knowledge on Arctic Ocean geology, on the other hand, are based on data available prior to 1990. A comprehensive compilation of data on Arctic Ocean paleoenvironment and its short-and long-term variability based on the huge amount of new data including the ACEX drilling data, has not been available yet. With this book, presenting (1) detailed information on glacio-marine sedimentary processes and geological proxies used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and (2) detailed geological data on modern environments, Quaternary variability on different time scales as well as the long-term climate history during Mesozoic-Tertiary times, this gap in knowledge will be filled.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary: The present paper contains a critical study of a number of foundation models suggested by various investigators, as well as a further development of some of the ideas involved. It is found that the model by Pasternak is the most natural extension of the Winkler foundation. It is also shown that the "non-solvability" of the problem of a finite bean or plate resting on a continuous foundation as posed by Wieghardt and further elaborated by Pflanz is not correct, and that problems of this type are solvable for any load distribution permissible in classical plate theory. The paper concludes with derivations of differential equations for plates resting on viscous and viscoelastic foundations, which may be used for solving problems involving compacted snow and permafrost bases.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract: Specimens of snow from the South Pole were tested to investigate air permeability K (cm/sec), ultimate compressive strength σc (g/cm^2 ) and dynamic Young's modulus E (g/cm^2 ) as a function of density. Anisotropy in a single layer of snow (snow between two summer crusts) was found in all three properties. Comparison with data for snow from Site II, Greenland, showed an empirical relation for both areas: σc = 10.42 x 10^-4 E for 0.43 g/cm^3 〈 ρ 〈 0.51 g/cm^3. σc = 5.68 x 10^-4 E for 8.63 x 10^3 g/cm^2 for 0.51 g/cm^3 〈 ρ 〈 0.90 g/cm^3. Air permeabilities are different for the two sites because of time and meteorological effects.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract: The report is divided into four parts: Parts I and II cover investigations of the reliability of shear stress measurements in soils subjected to vibratory loads for biaxial and triaxial systems, respectively. Part I is a summary only (see USA CRREL Technical Report 90 for detailed treatment). Part III is a study of three-dimensional "principal" stress patterns produced in soil subjected to vibratory loads. Part IV is a theoretical analysis of some aspects of soil wave propagation in stratified soil. From the measurements of five shear stresses and one normal stress, the stress distribution of a triaxial system can be determined. In noncohesive soils triaxial stress fields due to vibratory loads can be determined by recording six independent stress components. Sinusoidal force excitation and impact excitation yield time-distance graphs which can be used to determine reflection and refraction techniques in stratified soils.
