Description / Table of Contents: Glaciers & Glaciation is the classic textbook for all students of glaciation. Stimulating and accessible, it has established a reputation as a comprehensive and essential resource. In this new edition, the text, references and illustrations have been thoroughly updated to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the nature, origin and behaviour of glaciers and the geological and geomorphological evidence for their past history on earth. The first part of the book investigates the processes involved in forming glacier ice, the natureof glacier-climate relationships, the mechanisms of glacier flow and the interactions of glaciers with other natural systems such as rivers, lakes and oceans. In the second part, the emphasis moves to landforms and sediment, the interpretation of the earth's glacial legacy and the reconstruction of glacial depositional environments and palaeoglaciology.

Description / Table of Contents: The atmosphere is critical to climate change. It can amplify shifts in the climate system, and also mitigate them. This primer offers a short, reader-friendly introduction to these atmospheric processes and how they work, written by a leading expert on the subject. Giving readers an overview of key atmospheric processes, David Randall looks at how our climate system receives energy from the sun and sheds it by emitting infrared radiation back into space. The atmosphere regulates these radiative energy flows and transports energy through weather systems such as thunderstorms, monsoons, hurricanes, and winter storms. Randall explains how these processes work, and also how precipitation, cloud formation, and other phase changes of water strongly influence weather and climate. He discusses how atmospheric feedbacks affect climate change, how the the large-scale atmospheric circulation works, how predicting the weather and the climate are fundamentally different challenges, and much more. This is the ideal introduction for students and nonspecialists. No prior experience in atmospheric science is needed, only basic college physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Antarctica is the coldest and driest continent on earth - a place for adventure and a key area for global science. Research conducted in this extreme environment has received increasing international attention in recent years due to concerns over destruction of the ozone layer above it and the problems of global warming and rising sea levels. Data collected in the Antarctic now informs a wide range of scientific fields. A record of the globe's climate is locked up in its deep snow and ice while, as part of the early supercontinent Gondwana, its rocks have much to teach us about the geological history of the earth. Adiversity of unique plants and animals abound in Antarctic waters and the clear skies overhead allow astronomers to probe the outer reaches of the universe. Governed internationally since 1959, the Antarctic is also an object lesson in collaboration between nations. This dramatically illustrated new book brings together an international group of leading Antarctic scientists to explain why the Antarctic is so central to understanding the history and potential fate of our planet. It introduces the beauty of the world's greatest wilderness, its remarkable attributes, and the global importance of the international science done there. Spanning topics from marine biology to space science, this book is an accessible overview for anyone interested in the Antarctic and its science and governance. It provides a valuable summary for those involved in polar management and development of new research programmes, and is an inspiration for the next generation of Antarctic researchers.

Description / Table of Contents: Early warning for geologic disasters is a subject of intensive research. Opening up the path for students and lecturers alike, this book presents innovative trends in geoscientific research in this subject. The book successfully fills a gap in this field. The past years have seen new technologies that could be utilized for early warning and real-time loss estimation. They include self-organizing sensor networks, new satellite imagery with high resolution, multi-sensor observational capacities, and crowd sourcing. From this and improved physical models, data processing and communication methodologies a significant step towards better early warning technologies has been achieved by research. At the same time, early warning systems became part of the disaster management practice for instance in Japan and Indonesia. This book marks the important point where:* Research activities continue to improve early warning * Experience with applications is expandingAt this critical point in development of early warning for geological disasters it is timely to provide a volume that documents the state-of-the-art, provides an overview on recent developments and serves as knowledge resource for researcher and practitioners.

Description / Table of Contents: The historical links between geology and medicine are surprisingly numerous and diverse. This, the first ever volume dedicated to the subject, contains contributions from an international authorship of geologists, historians and medical professionals.Rocks, minerals, fossils and earths have been used therapeutically since earliest times and details recorded on ancient papyri, clay tablets, medieval manuscripts and early published sources. Pumice was used to clean teeth, antimony to heal wounds, clays as antidotes to poison, gold to cure haemorrhoids and warts, and gem pastes to treat syphilis and the plague, while mineral springs preserved health. Geology was crucial in the development of public health. Medical men who made important contributions to geology include Steno, Worm, Parkinson, Bigsby, William Hunter, Jenner, John Hulke, Conan Doyle, Gorini and various Antarctic explorers.

Description / Table of Contents: Antarctic Geoscience is the proceedings volume of the Third Symposium on Antarctic Geology and Geophysics, held in Madison, Wisconsin. The 151 chapters in the book, which include both review papers and original contributions, range over all major fields of geoscience. At a time when interest in Antarctica, its geologic history, and its mineral resource potential is increasing, this book provides the most current and comprehensive overview of the subject. These papers, representing the recent work of many scientists from fifteen nations, offer a balanced assessment of current thought and knowledge concerning the geology and geoscience of Antarctica and the surrounding oceanic regions. Together, they constitute the most up-to-date reference work on Antarctic earth sciences. The book is divided into twelce sections: Gondwanaland (11 chapters), Scotia Arc Region (39, East Antarctica Shield (14), Upper Precambrian-Paleozoic Rocks (11), Paleontology (8), Igneous Rocks (14), Structural Geology and Tectonics (9), Mineral Deposits (4), Crustal Structure (13), Subglacial Morphology (4), Marine Geology (8), and Cenozoic History (16). The volume is generously illustrated with photographs and line drawings and includes a large color geologic map of the continent.

Description / Table of Contents: The essays in this volume cover: the materials which may be recognizably preserved for varying periods of time or whose presence in certain deposits may be inferred from characteristic products of their diagenesis; how and to what extent these materials or diagenetic products may be used to reconstruct the flora of a lake basin, its catchment area or regions further away; the reliability or fallibility of chemical, physical or biological methods of analysis, where materials come from, to what extent they are homogeneously or heterogeneously deposited after arrival in a lake basin and whether the latter situation arises ab initio or is the result of later perturbations; the various direct or indirect methods of dating deposits, even on a global scale, and stress, strain and stability in lacustrine environments. Some chapters are devoted to reconstruction of the past during certain periods of time in given localities but in all the chapters the matters considered and views expressed are related to previous work done in various parts of the world. The book will be of value to all concerned with the past and present environment, botany, ecology, hydrology, and geography. The reference sections provide a comprehensive bibliography of palaeolimnological and related literature.

Description / Table of Contents: Ecotones are dynamic over-lapping boundary areas where major terrestrial biomes meet.  As past studies have shown, and as the chapters in this book will illustrate, their structure, size, and scope have changed considerably over the millennia, expanding and shrinking as climate and/or other driving conditions, also changed.  Today, however, many of them are changing at a rate not seen for a long time, perhaps largely due to climate change and other human-induced factors.  Indeed ecotones are more sensitive to climate change than the biomes on either side, and thus may serve as critical early indicators of future climate change.  As ecotones change, they also redefine the limits of the biomes on either side by altering their distributions of species because, in addition to their own endemic species, any ecotone will also have species from both adjoining biomes.  Consequently, they may also be places of high levels of species interaction, serving as active evolutionary laboratories, which generate new species that then migrate back into adjacent biomes.Ecotones Between Forest and Grassland explores how these ecotones have changed in the past, how they are changing today, and how they are likely to change in the future. The book includes chapters from around the world with a special focus on South American and Neotropical ecotones.

Description / Table of Contents: Agent-based modeling is a new technique for understanding how the dynamics of biological, social, and other complex systems arise from the characteristics and behaviors of the agents making up these systems. This innovative textbook gives students and scientists the skills to design, implement, and analyze agent-based models. It starts with the fundamentals of modeling and provides an introduction to NetLogo, an easy-to-use, free, and powerful software platform. Nine chapters then each introduce an important modeling concept and show how to implement it using NetLogo. The book goes on to present strategies for finding the right level of model complexity and developing theory for agent behavior, and for analyzing and learning from models. Agent-Based and Individual-Based Modeling features concise and accessible text, numerous examples, and exercises using small but scientific models. The emphasis throughout is on analysis--such as software testing, theory development, robustness analysis, and understanding full models--and on design issues like optimizing model structure and finding good parameter values. The first hands-on introduction to agent-based modeling, from conceptual design to computer implementation to parameterization and analysis Filled with examples and exercises, with updates and supplementary materials at www.railsback-grimm-abm-book.com Designed for students and researchers across the biological and social sciences Written by leading practitioners.
