Description / Table of Contents: Palaeohydrology is the study of changes in the waters of the Earth prior to continuous monitoring. Knowledge of these changes is important for the understanding of past and present environmental changes and of the form of the present-day environment. The evolution of the hydrological cycle in response to climatic change produces a chain of environmental and human consequences — factors that are becoming more relevant as climate change is predicted. Evidence of past environmental changes may be used to validate models with which to predict future change — thus the study of rates, mechanisms and processes of Late Quaternary hydrological changes is of critical importance. This volume is designed for all who are interested in the hydrological impacts of climatic change and the contribution that palaeohydrology can make to the study of these changes. It details recent achievements in this important field, and provides for prioritizing and guiding future studies.

Description / Table of Contents: Polar motion data is available from the mid-19th century to the present. Based on time series with a variety of sampling intervals (monthly, 0.05-year, 5-day and daily), we have separated the low-frequency terms by low-pass filtering and the Chandler and annual terms by recursive band-pass filtering of the pole coordinates. Using a simple unweighted least-squares fit to the filtered low-frequency terms, the linear trends of the rotation pole were estimated. Assessing the estimates based on intercomparisons, the most reliable trend estimate was found. Using a Fast Fourier Transform, we have computed the prograde, retrograde and total amplitude spectra of the low-frequency part of polar motion in order to reveal the long-periodic signals. The characteristics and time evolution of the Chandler and annual wobbles are described by changes in their parameters (radii, directions and period lengths) over one century.

Description / Table of Contents: After a gap of nearly two decades since the Magsat mission in 1980, the dedicated low-orbit potential field mission CHAMP is now in the third of its seven year mission. Already, the new magnetic total intensity and vector data have yielded maps of the global crustal field of unprecedented accuracy and resolution. Here, we assess the value of these maps to infer deep crustal structure of regions overlain by younger cover. A GIS based modelling technique has been developed to model the various geological units of the continents starting from the geological map of the world. Depending upon the known rock types of the region, they are assigned a standard susceptibility value and using the global seismic crustal structure, a vertically integrated susceptibility (VIS) model is computed at each point of the region. Starting with this initial VIS model, the vertical field anomaly is computed at a satellite altitude of 400 km and compared with the corresponding CHAMP vertical field anomaly map. The first comparison is carried out against a model using the lateral extent of a cratonic region as given by published tectonic maps. In the subsequent modelling step, depending upon the extent of the observed anomaly pattern of that region, the surface geology is extended beneath the sediments until the recomputed map fits the observed magnetic anomaly map. Here, we focus on modelling results for the selected few provinces of the world where the initial model does not agree with the observed anomaly map. Similar modelling of CHAMP satellite magnetic anomalies can constrain the subsurface structure hidden by Phanerozoic cover in many parts of the world.

Description / Table of Contents: Since the publication of Geological Applications of Wireline Logs in 1990, there have been many new developments in the technology of wireline logging tools and in the correlation and interpretation of downhole measurements. This volume provides extensive documentation of the diversity of geological and geophysical problems which can be addressed by wireline log data. High-density/high-resolution log measurements now appear to be an integral part of the characterization of petroleum reservoirs; there is increasing interest in the use of logs for quantitative determinations of the physical properties of rocks; there is also abundant evidence for the importance of integrating geological and geophysical data are different scales and the potential benefits of multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving. The editors hope that Geological Applications of Wireline Logs II will, in common with the earlier volume, act as a milestone in its field.

Description / Table of Contents: Muds and mudstones are the prime control on fluid flow in sedimentary basins and near-surface environments. As the world's commonest sediment type, they act as aquitards in sedimentary basins, restricting water flow and influencing the development of overpressure. In petroleum systems they act as source rocks for nearly all oil and much gas, determine migration directions between source and trap in most settings, and act as seals to many reservoirs. In near surface environments they not only control natural flow, but have been commonly used to restrict leakage from waste disposal sites. This volume focuses on the previously poorly described physical properties of muds and mudstones in both near-surface and deep basinal settings. Amongst its contents are reviews of the compaction, permeability, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of mudstones, experimental studies of transport properties, and case studies of the importance of fluid flow in both hydrogeological and petroleum systems.

Description / Table of Contents: The South Atlantic continues to be a globally important focus for the oil and gas industry. This book is, therefore, a timely reference work that provides both the geological background needed to understand the habitats of the discoveries of Nigeria, Angola and Brazil, and the background data required for preparing work programmes. The book presents five thematic sections: ‘The geological and geophysical framework of the South Atlantic’, ‘Oil and gas habitats’, ‘Organic geochemistry studies’, ‘Biostratigraphic appllications’ and ‘Exploration studies and issues’. Extensive use is made of colour and, for the time in this series, a CD-ROM is included that provides a tectonic map of the South Atlantic as well as play maps of both Brazil and West Africa.

Description / Table of Contents: A Databank was created using data from 25 local catalogues and 30 special studiesof earthquakes in central, northern and northwestern Europe. Event types werediscriminated, fake events and duplets eliminated, and different magnitudes andintensities converted to Mw. The conversions require the establishment of regressionequations. The Catalogue contains tectonic events from the Databank within the area44°N-72°N, 25°W-32°E and the time period 1300-1993 which have Mw magnitudesof 3.50 and larger. The area is covered by different polygons. Within each polygononly data from one or a small number of the local catalogues, supplemented by datafrom special studies, enter the Catalogue. If there are two or more such catalogues orstudies providing a solution for an event, a priority algorithm selects one entry forthe Catalogue. Then Mw is calculated from one of the magnitude types, or frommacroseismic data, given by the selected entry according to another priority scheme. The origin time, location, Mw magnitude and reference are specified for each entryof the Catalogue. So is the epicentral intensity, I0, if provided by the original source.Following these criteria, a total of about 5,000 earthquakes constitute the Catalogue.Although originally derived for the purpose of seismic hazard calculation withinGSHAP, the Catalogue provides a data base for many types of seismicity andseismic hazard studies.

Description / Table of Contents: Sedimentary basins with a marine connection show significant stratigraphic variations that result from eustatic sea-level fluctuation. Other key factors that control stratigraphy include the availability of sediment and the role of tectonically induced subsidence and uplift. Tectonic activity is important in most sedimentary basins as it is a causal mechanism for the production of certain regionaland local-scale sequence boundaries, generating accommodation space, altering base levels and controlling source areas. This collection of academic and industrial studies addresses the relative roles of tectonics, eustasy and sediment supply in generating stratigraphy. This volume will be of interest to petroleum geologists and researchers in sequence stratigraphy.

Description / Table of Contents: The volume provides a modern synthesis of foreland basin stratigraphy and structural geology. It covers the foothills and foreland basins of the northwestern Alps, the Pyrenees and the Betic thrust belt. The multidisciplinary approach includes both sedimentological and structural studies, plus numerical modelling as a tool to quantify and integrate the geological data. This book reults from the Integrated Basin Studies Project, which was funded by the European Commission. More than 200 researchers from 38 institutions in 15 countries have collaborated in the IBS project. Several papers from outside the project have also been included to provide the reader with a more comprehensive overview of Western Europe's Cenozoic foreland basins. This volume concentrates on scientific research, but many oil companies are actively exploring the foothills of thrust belts throughout the world, and this book will be an invaluable reference work for exploration geologists as well as for academics.

Description / Table of Contents: The evolution of oceanic plates is very well described by plate tectonic theory, but the study of continental tectonics is more complicated. Continental plates have a different rheology, a greater mean age, a higher heat productivity, and are more heterogeneous in composition. An understanding of continental tectonics requires, therefore, that these effects upon rigid plate behaviour be taken into account. This book brings together a series of papers which explore various aspects of the deformation of continental lithosphere, covering different tectonic settings from the Palaeozoic to the present day. These include the processes of terrane accretion and juxtaposition, the exhumation of high-pressure terrains, and mechanisms of crustal extension and rifting. The book will be of general interest to a broad audience of earth scientists concerned with global tectonics, continental growth processes, and the deformation of the continents during collision, exhumation and extension.

Description / Table of Contents: Field geology is, by definition, the geology of exhumed rocks. This book provides a broad range of examples of deep exhumation and emphasizes the competition between the various exhumation processes: normal faulting, ductile thinning and erosion. The papers include examples from all parts of the world and from a variety of tectonic settings, including oceanic subduction zones, continental collision zones and continental rifts. The volume explores the relationship between climate, erosion and tectonics. It provides innovative applications of thermochronology to understanding the rates and geometry of normal faulting, and the interaction between erosion and tectonics. The book will be of broad interest to any student of mountain belts and orogenesis, including those in tectonics, structural geology, geodynamics, metamorphic petrology, sedimentology and geomorphology.

Description / Table of Contents: During the 1980s the increasing availability of seismic reflection data prompted an upsurge of interest in extensional tectonics, early work concentrating on ‘listric’ thrust-belt type models and the concepts of section balancing. However, earthquake seismology and detailed fault studies have shown recently that faults involved in crustal extension may be essentially planar. This volume concerns the geological setting and interpretation of both listric and planar normal faults. Normal faults are of particular importance in UK hydrocarbon exploration as they are directly or indirectly responsible for the majority of the pre-Tertiary oil and gas accumulations in the North Sea. As the economic size of fields reduces, the modern geologist will require an improved understanding of the origins, geometry and sealing capabilities of these faults. The volume is divided into four sections, dealing with: the geometry and kinematics of large-scale, crustal-stretching faults which typically delimit major hydrocarbon accumulations; case studies ranging from the small-scale fractures associated with the movement of salt to the large-scale intra-plate kinematics of whole fault arrays; studies of detailed displacement patterns shown by individual faults and small fault arrays; and modelling studies of normal fault geometry. The editors believe that this volume will clarify the circumstances in which the diverse models of normal fault geometry might be applicable and thus provide a useful source of reference for both industry- and academia-based research workers. Another volume on extensional tectonics? Yes, but not only is this one very nicely put together, it is also very timely … The editors have wisely placed the emphasis on observations and data … Roberts et al. deserve a great deal of credit for the very high standard of presentation. Most of the contributions contain sensible stuff that is clearly written. Illustrations are excellent … and there are hardly any typos … Ican thoroughly recommend this book to both libraries and individuals.

Description / Table of Contents: The Physics of Explosive Volcanic Eruptions includes seven review papers that outline our current understanding of several aspects of the physical processes affecting magma during volcanic eruptions. An introductory chapter highlights research areas where our understanding is incomplete, or even completely lacking, and where work needs advancing if our knowledge of volcanic processes is to be substantially improved. The book covers topics on the physical properties of silicic magma, vesiculation processes, conduit flow and fragmentation, gas loss from magmas during eruption, models of volcanic eruption columns, tephra dispersal and pyroclastic density currents.

Description / Table of Contents: It has long been suggested that there is a causal link between volcanic activity and Quaternary environmental change. Earlier work pointed to the volcanic activity driving large-scale Quaternary glacial fluctuations. However, a growing body of evidence lends weight to the converse view that Quaternary environmental changes resulted in increased volcanic activity. Using tephra layers as chronological horizons, researchers have begun to suggest that these volcanic events may have produced not only short-term climate changes but also variations in regional vegetation patterns and in the distribution of society. A full understanding of the complex interaction between volcanic activity and Quaternary environmental change requires the collaboration of both volcanologists and Quaternary scientists. Volcanoes in the Quaternary brings together papers from workers in both fields and reflects the diversity of current research. The papers are grouped geographically and focus on New Zealand’s North Island, the East African Rift Valley, the Mediterranean and Iceland. They cover the determination of eruptive chronologies, discuss the impacts on local vegetation and society, outline the importance of tephrostratigraphic records and provide detailed studies of hazard assessment.

Description / Table of Contents: Conventional studies of oceanic structure and evolution are inevitably hampered by the difficulties with sampling the crust in the third dimension. Subsurface studies with deep seismic techniques provide some measure of understanding below the seafloor. Ophiolite studies, however, can provide a vast body of knowledge with regard to the deeper structure and crustal compositions, which is unattainable in the deep sea. In turn, many of the recent regional and detailed structures identified at mid-ocean spreading systems such as ridge segmentation patterns and ridge axis discontinuities, now form a significant contribution to recent studies of ophiolite complexes. The book will be of interest to academics from undergraduates upwards and also to industrial researchers concerned with metal sulphide and platinum group element deposits. Cover illustration: Deep-tow sidescan sonograph of the axial floor of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge around 24°N. Data were recorded using the IOSDL Towed Ocean Bottom Instrument. View is 6×8 km in a water depth of around 3500 m. Cratered seamounts, freshly mounded pillow constructs and linear fault scarps are clearly imaged. These currently active ridge processes compare directly with their ancient analogues discussed in this publication.

Description / Table of Contents: An interdisciplinary collection of papers related to long-term landscape development, integrating landscape and tectonic processes. The presentations demonstrate that studies of present-day processes can be successfully placed within an evolutionary framework and geological setting, the necessity for which increases as appreciation of the antiquity of many landscapes grows. Coverage includes: British Isles, NW Europe, Mediterranean Basin, Middle East, Himalaya, Andes and Antarctica. The papers highlight the significance of recent advances in analytical technology for improving interpretation of both geologically ‘ancient’ and ‘young’ landscapes. It is hoped that, by demonstrating the benefits of interdisciplinary discourse, a widening of interest in landscape studies will be encouraged.

Description / Table of Contents: Borehole images now form a major part of the interpretation strategy for subsurface geological interpretation in a wide variety of scenarios. This volume documents some case histories together with image acquisition and analysis techniques, and includes three major reviews of recent applications and technical developments. The contributions begin with an introduction and review on the technology and applications of the subject, which also includes a sustantial bibliography detailing many of the relevant research papers. A timely and necessary appraisal of the fundamentals of electrical and ultrasonic borehole imaging tools and processing methods forms a second review in this collection. Anyone utilizing borehole images will benefit from studying the third review paper on the recognition of artefacts in these images. The wealth of case histories of borehole imaging in the remainder of this volume provides an up to date glimpse of the wide range of applications and uses. This text is of benefit to geologist and engineers alike, from both academia and industry. It is suitable for newcomers to the field as well as being essential reading for experienced borehole analysts wanting to keep abreast of the latest technological developments and methods.

Description / Table of Contents: The Cadomian orogeny was first defined over 60 years ago to describe the earth movements which resulted in an unconformity between an Upper Proterozoic supracrustal sequence, namely the Brioverian, and Cambrian molasse in the north Armorican region. Since that time the terminology has been extended to encompass an extensive orogenic cycle lasting from approximately 700 - 450 Ma recorded in a belt running from the northern Appalachians to Armorica and the Southern British Isles. This volume is the first to collect together the views of workers from a variety of geological disciplines working on a range of aspects of Cadomian geological evolution. The 27 contributions contained provide both reviews and detailed studies of such topics as basement/cover relationships, nature of supracrustal sequences, deformation, metamorphism and magmatism. Lithological, geochemical, geochronological and palaeomagnetic data presented allow petrogenetic and evolutionary models to be erected and assessed and correlations to be considered within the Cadomian belt so that global geodynamic evolutionary models may be postulated. The Volume thus provides an essential reference to current thinking on the Cadomian orogeny and the date to guide future research. Part 1 is concerned with the Cadomian orogeny in the Armorican Massif Starting with a review of the Cadomian orogeny, the contributors discuss Cadomian magmatism and tectonics of northern France and the Channel Islands. Part 2 examines the Cadomian orogeny in other parts of the world, including the UK, Ireland, Iberia and Canada.

Description / Table of Contents: Although it has long been recognized that what ultimately drives metamorphism and metamorphic reactions is heat, what was less certain is the distribution of heat within the crust, the type and location of major heat sources and the rates of heat flux through crustal rocks. This book explores the factors that control metamorphism and rates of metamorphic processes.

Description / Table of Contents: The metronomic variations of the Earth-Moon system and of the Earth-Sun orbital patterns produce gravitational and temperature effects that alter the physical environment on the Earth’s surface. These give an interpenetrating effect of forcing cycles ranging from twice-daily tides, day-night alternations, various tidal patterns and the annual solar pattern. All of these have been used palaeontologically to give precision to short-term age determination in the past. It is cycles of the Milankovitch band that are showing promise of enabling new practical timescales to be established for parts of the geological record. These depend on changes in the Earth-Sun distance and changes in the tilt of the Earth’s axis with respect to the Earth’s orbit round the Sun. There is increasing evidence that small-scale sedimentary rhythmic couplets may represent the effect of such changes. The disentangling of the interpenetrating cycles to produce an orbital forcing timescale is an exciting problem and challenge for palaeobiology and sedimentology. These should enable numerical dates to be given to bio- and chronostratigraphical timescales and eventually enable many Earth processes to be analysed in real time. The papers in this volume represent major new developments in sedimentological, paIaeontological, geochemical and stratigraphical research being undertaken in this field.

Description / Table of Contents: The two main aims of this Special Publication are to capture the wide range of rapidly expanding research in this area, which reflects the increasing importance of comprehensive ‘structural characterization’ in static reservoir descriptions, and to help promote synergy between the geosciences and petroleum engineering disciplines. The first aim is addressed by the sixteen papers of the volume, the majority of which cover a range of structural geological features, particularly faulted and fractured reservoirs, fault gouge properties, fault seal potential and fluid flow/simulation modelling in faulted and fractured reservoirs. The papers draw heavily on experience obtained in the North Sea. This volume is for geologists, geophysicists and reservoir simulation/petroleum engineers studying faulted and fractured reservoirs, particularly those interested in studying petroleum traps, predicting fluid flow or modelling structurally heterogeneous reservoirs.

Description / Table of Contents: The early Paleogene of northwest Europe has been the subject of intense investigation over the last 25 years, with important stimuli being provided by the search for oil and gas in the offshore basins and by lUGS-sponsored investigations of the onshore historical stage and stratotype sections. The book includes three categories of papers on the Paleocene and Eocene of NW Europe: detailed aspects of local stratigraphy in the North Sea, Denmark, Belgium, SE England and offshore NW Scotland; regional syntheses of the biostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy in NW Europe; and papers placing the successions of NW Europe in a global context, primarily through correlation with oceanic sections of the eastern Atlantic. Topics covered include: biostratigraphy (foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils, dinoflagellate cysts, diatoms, mammals), isotope stratigraphy, tephrostratigraphy, igneous history, tectonic evolution, and sequence stratigraphy. The reader will have access to substantial amounts of new stratigraphic data and to compilations of existing data that are based on greatly improved regional and global stratigraphic frameworks.

Description / Table of Contents: Fluid flow is fundamental to many geological processes, including the development of natural resources of hydrocarbons, ore deposits and water. Modelling of these processes requires information on the timing of fluid flow events and the interaction of fluids with surrounding rocks. In addition to isotopic methods, a diversity of approaches has been developed to assess the timing of events, including palaeomagnetism, fission track analysis and fluid inclusion studies. Many techniques also provide information on the duration of fluid flow events. The papers in this volume represent the range of approaches available to determine the dating and duration of fluid flow events and fluid-rock interaction: • first overview of methods of dating fluid flow • examples of commercial application of dating methods • explanations of methodology suitable for advanced teaching • extensive bibliographies This volume will be of interest to geologists in the hydrocarbon and minerals industries and in academia, and to geochemists and hydrogeologists.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume contains a series of 26 articles presenting new developments in the areas of reservoir characterization, water and gas injection, oil rim developments, chemical recovery and thermal recovery. The results of both laboratory studies and field applications are discussed. The contents of this volume demonstrate that, on the whole, improved oil recovery methods have a bright future, even though some of the more advanced processes are uneconomic at current prices. The contributions in this volume were carefully selected from recent papers on improved oil recovery methods and are written by an international field of authors from both industry and academia.

Description / Table of Contents: Resources of coalbed methane (CBM), methane trapped within the porous system of coal, are many times greater than the collective reserves of all the known conventional gas fields. Yet only in the United States has this energy source been tapped. As coal is both the source rock and the reservoir for CBM there is a major paradox whereby, in order for gas sourced by the coal not to have migrated, the coal must either be sealed or possess very low permeability. And yet for the coal bed to be an effective reservoir the gas must readily migrate into the production well. The solution to this paradox lies in a wide-ranging understanding of the geology of coal, and this volume aims to provide some of the answers. The 24 papers in the volume have been written by experts in CBM and coal geology from a range of countries in which CBM is either currently being produced commercially (USA) or in which there is active exploration (Europe and Australia). The CBM industry is relatively young and only now are exploratory wells being sunk in the UK, Europe and elsewhere in the World. There is a dearth of texts describing the geology of CBM and this volume will help to fill this gap. It will appeal to geologists involved with the CBM industry, and also to those connected with coal and conventional hydrocarbon resources, as well as to lecturers and students.
