    Description: This article presents the third and last part of the problem of diagnosing the fatigue of marine propulsion shafts in terms of energy with the use of the action function, undertaken by the authors. Even the most perfect physical models of real objects, observed under laboratory conditions and developed based on the results of their research, cannot be useful in diagnostics without properly transferring the obtained results to the scale of the real object. This paper presents the method of using dimensional analyses and the Buckingham theorem (the so-called π theorem) to determine the dimensionless numbers of the dynamic similarity of the physical model of the propulsion shaft and its real ship counterpart, which enable the transfer of the results of the research on the energy processes accompanying the ship propulsion shaft fatigue from the physical model to the real object.

    Description: In order to improve the accuracy and robustness of path following control for an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) suffering from unknown and complex disturbances, a variable speed curve path following a control method based on an extended state observer was proposed. Firstly, the effect of the environmental disturbances on the USV is equivalent to an unknown and time-varying sideslip angle, and the sideslip angle is estimated by using the extended state observer (ESO) and compensated in the Line of Sight (LOS) guidance law. Secondly, based on the traditional LOS guidance law, the design of the surge velocity guidance law is added to enable the USV to self-adjust the surge velocity according to the curvature of the curve path, thus further improving the tracking accuracy. Finally, the heading and speed controller of the USV is designed by using a sliding mode control to track the desired heading and speed accurately, and then the path following control of the USV’s curve path is realised. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    Description: Underwater gliders are winged, autonomous underwater vehicles that are broadly applied in physical and biological oceanography. The position of the wing has an important effect on the movement performance of the underwater glider. In this paper, the dynamic motion of a series of underwater glider models with different longitudinal wing positions are simulated, which provides guidance for the design of underwater gliders. The results show that when the net buoyancy is constant, the wing position affects the gliding angle, but does not affect the relationship between the gliding angle and the gliding speed. In addition, the farther the wing position of the glider is from the buoyancy centre, the longer it takes for the attitude of a glider to change, whether the wing is in front of, or behind, the buoyancy centre.

    Description: Marine propulsion shafting systems are exposed to torsional vibrations originating from excitations in their prime movers and propellers. It is essential to analyse their steady state response in the earliest stage of ship design. The paper describes the implementation of SimulationX software based upon simulation modelling for these calculations. This software can be used either by the design office of the shipyard or by the classification society for verification within the plan approval phase. Some specifics of the input data preparation are briefly discussed. In addition, the simulation results depend on the modelling approach chosen. For these reasons, the real two-stroke Diesel engine ship propulsion system was chosen and several different models were implemented for system modelling. SimulationX calculation results are compared with those of two well-known and field-proven programs that use an analytical approach. Finally, the results are compared with the measurements performed on the actual newly built ship. Discussion reviews the selected SimulationX model, and its verification and validation in the case of engine cylinders with normal ignition.

    Description: In this paper, we examine the problem of optimising the process of topping up lubricating oil in medium-speed marine engines. This process is one of the methods that can be applied to improve the properties of lubricating oil. The amount of fresh oil added to lubricating oil system always balances its consumption, but the method used to top up depends on the marine engineer. Small amounts of fresh oil can be added at short intervals, or large ones at long intervals, and the element of randomness often plays a significant role here. It would therefore be valuable to find a method that can help the mechanical engineer to choose the right strategy. We apply a multi-criteria optimisation method for this purpose, and assume that the criterion functions depend on the concentration of solid impurities and the alkalinity, which are among the most important aspects of the quality and properties of lubricating oil. These criterion functions form the basis for multi-objective optimisation carried out with the use of the MATLAB computer program.

    Description: Steel sandwich structures are perceived as alternatives to single-skin welded structures in the shipbuilding industry due its advantages like significant reduction of mass in relation to typical single skin structure. However, beside problems with their strength properties itself, applications in real structures requires of solving the problem of joining, both for connection sandwich to sandwich as well as sandwiches to single-shell structures. Proper design of joints is connected with some factors like lack of attempt to interior of panel, introduction of additional parts and welds with completely different stiffness. In the paper the results of laboratory fatigue tests of selected joints as well as numerical calculation of stressed for different kind of joints of sandwich structures are presented. As result of calculations optimisation of geometry for selected joints is performed.

    Description: Prediction of the maneuvering characteristics of a ship at the design stage can be done by means of model tests, computational simulations or a combination of both. The model tests can be realized as a direct simulation of the standard maneuvers with the free running model, which gives the most accurate results but is also the least affordable, as it requires a very large tank or natural lake, as well as the complex equipment of the model. Alternatively, a captive model test can be used to identify the hydrodynamic characteristics of the hull, which can be used to simulate the standard maneuvers with the use of dedicated software. Two types of captive model tests are distinguished: circular motion tests (CMT) and planar motion mechanism tests (PMM). The paper presents an attempt to develop a computational method for ship maneuverability prediction in which the hydrodynamic characteristics of the hull are identified by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The CFD analyses presented here directly simulate the circular motion test. The resulting hull characteristics are verified against the available literature data, and the results of the simulations are verified against the results of free running model tests. Reasonable agreement shows the large potential of the proposed method.

    Description: This study is dedicated to investigations of the working process in a dual-fuel low-emission combustion chamber for a floating vessel’s gas turbine. As the object of the research, a low-emission gas turbine combustion chamber with partial premixing of fuel and air inside the outer and inner radial-axial swirls was chosen. The method of the research is based on the numerical solution of the system of differential equations which represent the physical process of mass and energy conservation and transformations and species transport for a multi-component chemically reactive turbulent system, considering nitrogen oxides formation and a discrete ordinates model of radiation. The chemistry kinetics is presented by the 6-step mechanism of combustion. Seven fuel supply operating modes, varying from 100% gaseous fuel to 100% liquid fuel, have been analysed. This analysis has revealed the possibility of the application of computational fluid dynamics for problems of dual-fuel combustion chambers for the design of a floating vessel’s gas turbine. Moreover, the study has shown the possibility of working in different transitional gaseous and liquid fuel supply modes, as they satisfy modern ecological requirements. The dependencies of the averaged temperature, NO, and CO concentrations along the length of the low-emission gas turbine combustion chamber for different cases of fuel supply are presented. Depending on the different operating modes, the calculated emission of nitrogen oxides NO and carbon monoxide CO at the outlet cross-section of a flame tube are different, but, they lie in the ranges of 31‒50 and 23‒24 mg/nm3 on the peak of 100% liquid fuel supply mode. At operating modes where a gaseous fuel supply prevails, nitrogen oxide NO and carbon monoxide CO emissions lie in the ranges of 1.2‒4.0 and 0.04‒18 mg/nm3 respectively.

    Description: Container ship length was estimated using artificial neural networks (ANN), as well as a random search based on Multiple Nonlinear Regression (MNLR). Two alternative equations were developed to estimate the length between perpendiculars based on container number and ship velocity using the aforementioned methods and an up-to-date container ship database. These equations could have practical applications during the preliminary design stage of a container ship. The application of heuristic techniques for the development of a MNLR model by variable and function randomisation leads to the automatic discovery of equation sets. It has been shown that an equation elaborated using this method, based on a random search, is more accurate and has a simpler mathematical form than an equation derived using ANN.

    Description: This article describes a method for planning the assembly of ship hulls that focuses on a welding sequence, takes into account subassembly processes and makes use of a previously built database of structures. Different degrees of similarity between structures are taken into account. The described research led to the development of an intelligent hybrid sequencing method for structure assembly that uses fuzzy clustering, case-based reasoning and evolutionary optimization. The method is called ‘Multi-case-Based Assembly Planning (MBAP)’. The method is developed to provide satisfactory solutions with low user effort. The analyses carried out show that the calculations are highly time-efficient. The developed evolutionary algorithm converges on sub-optimal solutions. The MBAP method can be directly implemented by any shipbuilder that assembles hulls. Apart from this, fuzzy clustering integrated with case-based reasoning can be applied in practice. The integration of fuzzy clustering and case-based reasoning has been taken to a level higher than previously described in the literature.

    Description: Energy efficiency has become more important in every industry and daily life. Designing and building a more efficient marine vehicle can lead to lower fuel consumption and a longer lifetime for the components of the vehicle. Erosion caused by cavitation reduces the service life of the propeller and the related components in the propulsion and maneuvering system. Reducing cavitation leads to a longer life for these components. This paper aims to explain and investigate propeller blade cup as a cavitation reduction method for marine propellers. A cavitating no-cup propeller is created and analyzed then the cupped version of this propeller is generated and analyzed to compare with the no-cup propeller. Cavitation results of these propellers are investigated. In addition, the thrust, torque, and efficiency of the propellers are compared.

    Description: Fatigue is one of the main failure modes in marine structures, and it is caused by the strong cyclic characteristics of the loads they support. This failure mode is amplified in areas of high stress concentration, such as at the intersection of primary and secondary elements. In this paper, a two-phase study is proposed that compares numerical and experimental results using a digital image correlation technique. The described procedure establishes selection, design, and scantling criteria and provides recommendations for the design of the transverse structure using specimens with different geometries. These geometries correspond to different designs for the transverse primary structure that use a longitudinal secondary stiffener with variable thickness and longitudinal spacing to transverse in a dynamic and quasi-static regime. The stress state for this regime is calculated based on the biaxiality indication concept, which uses the fatigue phenomenon (safety factor and sensitivity curves) and fracture mechanics (parameters of the Paris crack propagation law, correlation value, and law of variation of the stress intensity factor).

    Description: To confront climate change, decarbonization strategies must change the global economy. According to statements made as part of the European Green Deal, maritime transport should also become drastically less polluting. As a result, the price of transport must reflect the impact it has on the environment and on health. In such a framework, the purpose of this paper is to suggest a novel method for minimizing emissions from ships, based on so-called Pareto multi-objective optimization. For a given voyage by a ship, the problem is to minimize emissions on the one hand and minimize fuel consumption or passage time on the other. Minimizing emissions is considered as the preferred objective. Therefore, the objective of minimizing fuel consumption or passage time needs to be reformulated as a constraint. Solving such a problem consists of finding most favourable path and speed for the ship and satisfying the optimization criteria. Relatively new systems such as hybrid diesel–electric systems have the potential to offer significant emissions benefits. A hybrid power supply utilizes the maximum efficiency of the direct mechanical drive and the flexibility of a combination of combustion power from the prime mover and stored power from energy storage from an electrical supply, at part load and overload. A new report by the American Bureau of Shipping suggests that maritime transport is likely to meet the International Maritime Organization’s target by 2030, solely by using current technology and operational measures. However, this would not be enough to attain the target of reducing CO2 emissions by 2050 by at least 50% compared to 2008. New technologies and operational methods must be applied.

    Description: Ensuring the safety of ship crews at sea is of the utmost importance. Life rafts are one of the basic components of any seagoing vessel and ensuring their stability is an important component of maritime research. This study concerns the determination of the aerodynamic drag coefficients of pneumatic life rafts in a full range of wind speed and directions. The drag coefficients are based on full-scale experimental studies and numerical calculations (computational fluid dynamics) carried out with Flow-3D software. Two types of life rafts are analysed in the numerical simulations, namely, a non-deformed raft and a raft deformed under the influence of wind pressure at a given flow velocity. The shape of the deformed pneumatic life raft is recreated on the basis of photographic documentation from experimental studies. The results of the numerical calculations are verified on the basis of full-scale flow experiments carried out at the Low Speed Wind Tunnel T-3 Laboratory at the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw. This study shows that there is a dependence of aerodynamic drag on the degree of deformation of the above-water part of the life raft, as well as the angle of the raft setting to the wind. In real water conditions, this angle depends mainly on the anchor point of the drift anchor and therefore should be considered at the design stage, which will directly reduce the wind leeway of the raft.

    Description: A bulbous bow is a typical ship structure. Due to the influence of the bulbous bow, complex flow separation and gas capture phenomena may appear during the water entry of ship-like sections. In this paper, experimental and numerical studies on the water entry of a ship-like section with an obvious bulbous bow are carried out. Two thin plates are installed at both ends of the test model to ensure that the flow field during the impact process is approximately two-dimensional. The free-fall drop test is carried out in the test rig equipped with guide rails. By changing drop heights, impact pressure on the model surface with different initial impact velocities is measured. A numerical model for simulating the water entry of the ship-like section is established by using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method, based on the Navier-Stokes equations. Reasonable time steps and mesh size are determined by convergence analysis. Four different flow models are used in the numerical analysis. It is found that the K-Epsilon turbulence model can present the most reasonable numerical prediction by comparing numerical results with the experimental data. Furthermore, the influence of the bulbous bow on the impact loads is numerically studied by using the validated numerical model. It suggests that the bulbous bow has little effect on the impact force acting on the bow-flared area but, in the position near the bulbous bow, the pressure will be affected by the second slamming and the air cushion.

    Description: Navigational safety necessitates careful route monitoring, which includes staying on the planned course. For a ship to achieve effective route monitoring while changing course, a wheel over point (WOP) must be precisely calculated and marked on a charted course. The reason is to warn the watchkeeping officer that the ship must make a course alteration to prevent overshooting the intended route. One of the techniques for appraising the WOP is the advance transfer technique (ATT). During a practical review by means of an electronic and paper chart work exercise of the ATT, this study discovered two research gaps related to the technique. Following that, this study created an improved advance transfer mathematical model (ATMM) by restructuring the use of the ship’s turning circle to overcome the limitations discovered. To validate the improvement of the ATMM over the ATT, data were collected by evaluating both methods using a ship simulator and performing a manoeuvring analysis. The data, specifically the reduction in the cross-track distance (XTD), was validated in three verification stages: compliance with XTL, percentage change, and Mann‒Whitney U test using IBM SPSS. In comparison to the ATT, the ATMM produces better results in terms of the course-keeping capability and it can be implemented as an algorithm in an integrated bridge navigation system for autonomous ship navigation safety.

    Description: The article briefly describes the problem of air pollution caused by sea-going ships and the resulting restrictions on the emission of toxic and harmful chemical compounds in the exhaust of marine engines, introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under the International Convention for the Prevention of Sea Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78). Such emissions provide a significant metrological problem, not only for the owners of operating sea-going ships, but also for shipyards, maritime administration offices and environmental protection inspectors. For this reason, the article’s author is developing research issues related to the diagnosing the exhaust emissions of marine engines under operating conditions, i.e. with limited control (measurement) susceptibility. This is particularly important in the period of intensive implementation of a new category of marine fuel, so-called modified fuels with low sulphur content. As part of the problem, a computational model of the parameters characterising the exhaust emissions of a marine engine in operation is presented in this article. This model is based on the measurement of the engine’s control parameters, using a standard (stationary) measurement system and a portable diagnostic system, configured for the purpose of this research. Presented here are representative measurements and calculation results (both obtained by the author and provided by the manufacturer) from the chemical exhaust gas emissivity of one of the ship engines operated. These confirm the adequacy of the calculation model developed and the diagnostic effectiveness of the measuring equipment applied. The methodology developed for experimental testing may also be implemented for the operation of other types of marine engines, provided that the basic chemical composition of the fuel supply and the engine load characteristics and hourly fuel consumption are known. Moreover, there is the possibility of indicating the cylinders and measuring the chemical composition of exhaust gases in the high-temperature part of the exhaust duct.

    Description: The work presented here investigates the structural response of cleaned corroded plates, subjected to compressive load in the presence of a locked crack, where the change of mechanical properties as a result of corrosion development and the cleaning process is also accounted for. A Finite Element model for assessing the compressive strength, considering geometric and material nonlinearities, is developed, and the analysed plates are compared with the available experimental data. An experimental design plan is generated using the Design of Experiments techniques, which quantifies the influence of the governing variables and their interactions with respect to the plate’s ultimate compressive strength. With a limited number of observations, the most significant effects are identified. The corrosion degradation is revealed to be the most crucial effect leading to an effective strength reduction. It was found that, in the case of a corroded plate with a locked crack subjected to a compressive load, the most severe case is when the crack is transversely oriented. The strength reduction is slightly lower than when the corrosion degradation and the presence of a crack are considered to be a simple summation of these two effects but acting separately. The outcome of the analysis is the development of several empirical formulations that allow a fast estimation of the ultimate strength of a corroded plate, subjected to compressive load in the presence of a locked crack, accounting for different cleaning.

    Description: The design of lifting blade shapes is a key engineering application, especially in domains such as those of marine propellers, hydrofoils, and tidal energy converters. In particular, the excitation frequency must be different from that of the structure to avoid resonance. The natural frequency in the cases where the fluid–structure interaction (FSI) is considerably different if considering the coupling added mass (AM) of the water. In this study, vibration experiments were performed using a real propeller in air and water. The modal parameters, natural frequencies, and mode shapes were determined. Validations were performed using 3D solid and acoustic elements in a direct coupling finite element format. The modal results and AM ratios were in agreement with the experimental results. Convenient application and high efficiency are basic requirements for an engineering application. Therefore, an empirical formula was established for the first-order FSI natural frequency to enable rapid estimation, thereby satisfying this requirement.

    Description: This paper presents the general principles of building a sailing yacht designed for people with multiple disabilities. Specific requirements for the crew on such vessels have been stressed. A lot of attention has been given to the possible disabilities of the design subjects and accessibility of the new yacht. The universal design method has been adopted to enable meeting ergonomic and rehabilitation requirements. We discuss selected stages of the design process: problem analysis, yacht construction and equipment. We discuss the influence of the type of disability on yacht use, in detail. Two tasks have been combined, that of a sailor with disabilities and that of a yacht. Both of them need to be taken into account in the socio-technical ‘sailor with disabilities - yacht’ system. A set of required yacht adaptations has been developed to meet the relationships in this system. Typical dangers in sailing on the Empatia 60 FD yacht are further enumerated. We provide a set of design rules for constructing dedicated yachts for the disabled and their practical use.

    Description: The paper described the experimental findings of underwater wet welding of E40 steel using self-shielded flux-cored wire with a TiO2-FeO-MnO slag system. The arc stability, weld quality and corrosion resistance with different heat inputs were studied. The results showed that the wet welding process of the designed wire displayed good operability in the range of investigated parameters. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld metal depended on the heat input. Due to the high fraction of acicular ferrite in the weld metal, the mechanical properties of the weld metal under low heat input had better tensile strength and impact toughness. Fracture morphologies at low heat input had uniform and small dimples, which exhibited a ductile characteristic. The diffusible hydrogen content in the deposited metal obtained at a heat input of 26 kJ/cm significantly reduced to 14.6 ml/100g due to the combined effects of Fe2O3 addition and the slow solidification rate of molten metal. The microstructure also had a significant effect on the corrosion resistance of the weld metal. The weld metal with high proportions of acicular ferrite at low heat input exhibited the lowest corrosion rate, while the base metal possessed a reduced corrosion resistance. These results were helpful to promote the application of low alloy high strength steel in the marine fields.

    Description: The ENDURUNS project is a European Research project of the Horizon 2020 framework, which has as its main objective to achieve the optimum and intelligent use of green hydrogen energy for long-term ocean surveys. The ENDURUNS system comprises an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) and an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) with gliding capability. The power pack of the USV integrates Li-ion batteries with photovoltaic panels, whilst the AUV employs Li-ion batteries and a hydrogen fuel cell. It is essential to develop a continuous monitoring ca-pability for the different systems of the vehicles. Data transmission between the devices onboard presents challenges due to the volume and structure of the different datasets. A telecommunications network has been designed to manage the operational components considered in the project. The autonomous vehicles perform measurements, providing their position and other data wirelessly. The system will generate a great volume of various signals during the survey. The Remote Control Centre needs to be interfaced with the vehicles in order to receive, manage and store the acquired data. An Underwater Internet of Things (IoT) platform is designed to establish efficient and smart data management. This study presents an exhaustive survey to analyse the telecommunication systems employed in the autonomous vehicles, including the back-end, user interface and mobile units. This paper presents the novel design of the hardware and software structure of the ENDURUNS project with regard to the literature, where its components and their in-terconnection layers are detailed, which is a novel scientific and technological approach for autonomous seabed surveying in deep oceans or in coastal areas.

    Description: Recently, there has been a significant development of ecological propulsion systems, which is in line with the general trend of environmentally friendly “green shipping”. The main aim is to build a safe, low-energy passenger ship with a highly efficient, emission-free propulsion system. This can be achieved in a variety of ways. The article presents the main problems encountered by designers and constructors already at the stage of designing the unit. The research conducted made it possible to create a design with an effective shape of the hull, with the prospect of an energy-efficient and safe propulsion system with good manoeuvrability. The scope of the research included towing tank tests, recalculation of the results in full-scale objects and a prediction of the energy demand of the propulsion system. The results obtained were compared to indicate power supply variants depending on the hull shape.

    Description: A measurement system includes all components in a chain of hardware and software that leads from a measured variable to processed data. In that context, the type and quality of the sensors or measuring devices are critical to any measurement system. MEMS/IMU sensors lag behind leading technologies in this respect, but the MEMS/IMU performance rapidly changes while is relatively inexpensive. For this reason, the paper proposes some investigations of currently available MEMS/IMUs, but in an array configuration. The article presents the results of research undertaken on this type of IMU sensor configuration under quasi-stationary and dynamic conditions and answers the question of whether the precision of current MEMS technologies for acceleration and angular velocity sensors is still improved using this kind of approach.

    Description: There are special cases in the marine industry, where additional material tests, such as the fracture toughness test, must be performed. Additional fracture toughness tests, such as CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement), are typically performed on three-point bend specimens. The dimension that defines all the specimen dimensions is the thickness of the material to be tested. It is recommended by classification societies (e.g. DNVGL) to test specimens that are twice as high as the material thickness. The width determines the length and, therefore, the weight of the specimen which, for a 100 mm plate is over 140 kg. Current ASTM E1820, BS7448-1 and ISO 12135 testing standards also allow for proportions other than those recommended. This results in a much smaller test piece. Reducing the specimen size allows the testing machine to achieve lower forces than a specimen with a width to thickness ratio of two. This paper presents the effect of changing the specimen geometry on CTOD test results. Research was performed for specimens with a height to thickness ratio of one and two. Abaqus software was used for numerical calculations. The numerical results were, at selected points, verified experimentally.

    Description: Journal and thrust bearings utilise hydrodynamic lubrication to reduce friction and wear between the shaft and the bearing. The process to determine the lubricant film thickness or the actual applied load is vital to ensure proper and trouble-free operation. However, taking accurate measurements of the oil film thickness or load in bearings of operating engines is very difficult and requires specialised equipment and extensive experience. In the present work, the performance parameters of journal bearings of the same principal dimensions are measured experimentally, aiming at training a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm capable of predicting the loading condition of any similar bearing. To this end, an experimental procedure using the Bently Nevada Rotor Kit 4 is set up, combined with sound and vibration measurements in the vicinity of the journal bearing structure. First, sound and acceleration measurements for different values of bearing load and rotational speed are collected and post-processed utilising 1/3 octave band analysis techniques, for parametrisation of the input datasets of the ML algorithms. Next, several ML algorithms are trained and tested. Comparison of the results produced by each algorithm determines the fittest one for each application. The results of this work demonstrate that, in a laboratory environment, the operational parameters of journal bearings can be efficiently identified utilising non-intrusive sound and vibration measurements. The presented approach may substantially improve bearing condition identification and monitoring, which is an imperative step to prevent journal bearing failures and conduct condition-based maintenance.

    Description: In this paper, two analysis models for tension leg platform (TLP) are proposed based on different simulation methods of the tendons for studying the TLP motion responses in waves. In the uncoupled analysis model, the tendon is simplified as a spring, and the restoring forces matrix is derived with the consideration of the influence of the coupled effect of horizontal offset and vertical setdown of the platform. In the coupled model, the axial and transverse vibration’s coupled effect has been considered for the establishment of the vibration equations for the tendons, and the finite difference method is used to solve the vibration equations. The time-domain coupled motion model of the platform and the mooring system is established based on the interaction forces between the tendons and the platform. The coupled and uncoupled TLP models are compared and analysed to determine their applicability. Compared with the uncoupled TLP model, the coupled TLP model has greater accuracy and a wider application range, and the effects of second-order wave force on the platform responses, horizontal offset, and vertical subsidence are analysed.

    Description: Ship maintenance is regulated by both the state and the classification society. The scope of maintenance works depends on the age of the ship and includes a dock, intermediate and special inspection. The problem is to estimate the reliable time of the ship maintenance and the downtime at the shipyard. The purpose of this article is to develop a more accurate model to predict a ship’s overall maintenance time. A multiple linear regression model is developed to describe the impact of historical data on hull repair, painting time, piping, age, structural and hull plate replacement for ship maintenance. In the literature, the least squares method is used to estimate unknown regression coefficients. The original value of the article is the use of a genetic algorithm to estimate coefficient values of the multiple linear regression model. Necessary analysis and simulations are performed on the data collected for oil and chemical or product tankers. As a result, a significant improvement in the adequacy of the presented model was identified.

    Description: The aim of the paper is to outline a project focussing on the development of a new type of ship weather routing solution with improved uncertainty handling, through better estimation of ship performance and responses to sea conditions. Ensemble forecasting is considered to take into account the uncertainty levels that are typical of operations in a stochastic environment. Increased accuracy of weather prediction is achieved through the assimilation of real-time data, measured by an on-board monitoring system. The proposed system will allow smooth integration of short-term Decision Support Systems for ship handling in dangerous or peculiar situations with long-term Decision Support Systems for weather routing. An appropriate user interface is also a critical part of the project and it will be implemented in a commercial Electronic Nautical Chart environment. A prototype of the full system will be installed and tested on a commercial vessel in regular operations and under real environmental conditions.

    Description: The purpose and scope of this article is to present the best marine practices used to determine the ship’s domain depth (compared to the safety depth parameter in ECDIS) and the safest and best possible speed (also known as optimal speed) of the ship in restricted sea areas limited by the depth of navigation waters. The author also presents a method that can be used to estimate the safe speed of a ship in shallow waters and the so-called navigational risk factor (specified in the range from 0 to 1), using the safety depth parameter specified in ECDIS based on the analysis of a three-dimensional model of the ship’s domain. The essence of the method proposed in this paper is a systematic approach to the operation of a seagoing ship in the aspect of assessing its navigation safety (navigational risk factor) when manoeuvring in restricted sea areas, in particular in shallow waters including navigable canals and fairways.

    Description: The objective of this work is to investigate the structural compressive response of plates with locked cracks accounting for all relevant factors and correlation between them. The nonlinear FE model considering both geometric and material nonlinearities is employed herein, and the FE model of the structural response of intact plates is validated with the available experimental data. In the common studies, based on One Factor at a Time analysis, some of the parameters and interactions between them are excluded. In the present study, the numerical investigations are conducted with the use of the Design of Experiments techniques, where all essential parameters and their interactions are adequately considered. With a total of 32 numerical analyses, the most influential factors and their interactions are identified. As a study outcome, empirical formulations, which allow for a fast estimation of the ultimate compressive strength of intact plates, plates with locked cracks, and repaired cracked plates, are derived. The developed formulations represent a fast and practical tool for estimating the ultimate compressive strength of intact, cracked, and repaired plates, which can be easily employed in the reliability analysis.results followed by their discussion.

    Description: Some problems of the foundations of offshore wind turbines are considered in this paper. A short review is presented on the two basic types of foundations, i.e. monopiles and gravity foundations, including their basic features and applications as well as general design considerations. Also, some issues regarding analysis are discussed, including geotechnical problems and modelling techniques. A numerical model of offshores turbine and some preliminary computations are presented. Finite element analysis was carried out for wind turbines supported on both gravity and monopile foundations. The wind turbine tower, blades (simplified model), gravity foundation and part of the surrounding soil are included in the model. The turbine was loaded by wind and loads induced by waves, inertia and gravity. Both non-linear static and dynamic analysis of the wind turbine was performed. The displacements and stresses under the tower foundations were calculated and a comparison analysis carried out.

    Description: The paper presents a mathematical model of a positional game of the safe control of a vessel in collision situations at sea, containing a description of control, state variables and state constraints as well as sets of acceptable ship strategies, as a multi-criteria optimisation task. The three possible tasks of multi-criteria optimisation were formulated in the form of non-cooperative and cooperative multi-stage positional games as well as optimal non-game controls. The multi-criteria control algorithms corresponding to these tasks were subjected to computer simulation in Matlab/Simulink software based on the example of the real navigational situation of the passing of one’s own vessel with eighteen objects encountered in the North Sea.

    Description: Dynamic properties are vital for the working reliability of aft stern tube bearings. However, the determination of such properties currently involves several simplifications and assumptions. To obtain its dynamic characteristics accurately, the aft stern tube bearing was divided into several bearing segments. The oil film reaction force was considered in the calculation of shaft alignment, and the journal deflection and actual oil film thickness were obtained accordingly. Subsequently, the perturbed Reynolds equation was solved using the finite difference method when the dynamic characteristics of journal bearings with finite width were evaluated. Then, a calculation program was developed and verified by comparing with the results of other studies. Finally, the dynamic characteristics were calculated under different revolutions. The results showed that the stiffness at the vertical direction of the aft stern tube bearing was several times that of the horizontal direction and varied with the revolutions of the shafting system. These findings can provide the foundation for the precise calculation of the journal trajectory under dynamic conditions, as well as for the evaluation of the oil film thickness. Moreover, the results led to favorable conditions for the accurate calculation of the shafting whirling vibration.

    Description: A new acoustic navigation system was developed to determine the position and speed of moving underwater objects such as divers and underwater vehicles. The path of an object and its speed were determined by the Doppler shifts of acoustic signals emitted by a transmitter placed on the object and received by four hydrophones installed at the periphery of the monitored body of water. The position and speed measurements were affected by errors mainly caused by acoustic reflections (returns) from the water body boundaries and surface reverberations. This paper discusses the source of the disturbances with the results of a simulation test and experimental measurements. It was demonstrated that the magnitude of the errors could be acceptable in most of the potential applications of the acoustic navigation system.

    Description: Propellers may encounter oblique flow during operation in off-design conditions. Study of this issue is important from the design and ship performance points of view. On the other hand, a propeller operating in oblique flow may sometimes result in a better propulsion efficiency. The main goal of the present study is to provide an insight on the propeller characteristics in the oblique flow condition. In this research, the performance of the DTMB 4419 propeller is studied by the numerical method based on solving Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations in several inflow angles. The sliding mesh approach is used to model the rotary motion of the propeller. Initially, the numerical method is verified by grid and time step dependency analysis at various inflow angles. Additionally, computed results at zero inflow angle are compared with the available experimental data and good agreement is achieved. Finally, the forces and moments acting on the propeller are obtained for 0° to 30° inflow angles. It is concluded that the inflow angle up to 10° has no significant influence on the thrust and torque coefficients as well as the propeller efficiency. However, at high angles up to 30°, the thrust and torque coefficients increase as the inflow angle increases, which may result in a significant improvement of propeller efficiency.

    Description: This paper investigates the use of neural networks (NNs) for the problem of assigning push boats to barge convoys in inland waterway transportation (IWT). The aim of this paper is to develop a Neural Network Ensemble (NNE) model that will be able to assist in push boat–barge convoy assignments based on the push boat power.The primary objective of this paper is to derive an NNE model for calculation of push boat Shaft Powers (SHPs) by using less than 100% of the experimental data available. The NNE model is applied to a real-world case of more than one shipping company from the Republic of Serbia, which is encountered on the Danube River. The solution obtained from the NNE model is compared toreal-world full-scale speed/power measurements carried out on Serbian push boats, as well as with the results obtained from the previous NNE model. It is found that the model is highly accurate, with scope for further improvements.

    Description: The aim of the study is to analyse shape memory alloy (SMA) pipeline joints in limited space applications for all kinds of ships. Generally, the space available in various areas on ships is strictly limited and service works usually meet many obstacles. If we consider a pipeline, the flange joints always require a larger free space around the pipe than the pipe alone. A simultaneous problem can occur with the propeller shaft line coupling between bearings. SMA couplings require less space around the pipe and service should be easier, e.g., insulation fixing, painting and so on. SMA couplings last for a lifetime and there is no need for periodical seal replacement. Herein, some proposals among other unpublished data are discussed. There is a significant technological interest in the use of SMAs for applications not widely used yet. A wide variety of alloys present the shape memory effect and many generate an expressive restitution force considerable for commercial interests.

    Description: This investigation is devoted to an analysis of the working process in a dual-fuel low-emission combustion chamber for a floating vessel’s gas turbine. The low-emission gas turbine combustion chamber with partial pre-mixing of fuel and air inside the outer and inner radial-axial swirlers was chosen as the object of research. When modelling processes in a dual-flow low-emission gas turbine combustion chamber, a generalized method is used, based on the numerical solution of the system of conservation and transport equations for a multi-component chemically reactive turbulent system, taking into consideration nitrogen oxides formation. The Eddy-Dissipation-Concept model, which incorporates Arrhenius chemical kinetics in a turbulent flame, and the Discrete Phase Model describing the interfacial interaction are used in the investigation. The obtained results confirmed the possibility of organizing efficient combustion of distillate liquid fuel in a low-emission gas turbine combustion chamber operating on the principle of partial preliminary formation of a fuel-air mixture. Comparison of four methods of liquid fuel supply to the channels of radial-axial swirlers (centrifugal, axial, combined, and radial) revealed the advantages of the radial supply method, which are manifested in a decrease in the overall temperature field non-uniformity at the outlet and a decrease in nitrogen oxides emissions. The calculated concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide at the flame tube outlet for the radial method of fuel supply are 32 and 9.1 ppm, respectively. The results can be useful for further modification and improvement of the characteristics of dual-fuel gas turbine combustion chambers operating with both gaseous and liquid fuels.

    Description: In order to study the dynamic response of a drill pipe under the motion of the float platform, current and waves during the installation of a subsea production tree (SPT), a numerical model was established to analyse the mechanical properties of the drill pipe. The effects of the float platform motion on the mechanical behaviours of the drill pipe are carried out as well as the operation depth, submerged weight of the SPT, current velocity and drill pipe specification. At the same time, the evolution mechanism of the dynamic response of the drill pipe was also explored. The results show that the bending stress of the drill pipe approaches the maximum value when the platform moves to about one fourth of its period. Based on the research, the deeper the operation depth, the smaller the range of motion of the bottom of the drill pipe; the current velocity and the size of drill pipe have the greatest influence on the lateral displacement and bending stress.

    Description: Stiffened plates are the main structural building block in ship and offshore hulls and their structural response subject to loads is a topic of significant practical interest in ship and offshore structural design. To investigate the structural capacity for design and evaluation purposes, it is becoming an efficient and reliable practice to carry out non-linear finite element (FE) analysis. The present study is to assess the buckling strength of a stiffened deck panel on an FPSO vessel using the nonlinear finite element code ADVANCE ABAQUS, where imperfection sensitivity work is also accounted for. The cases studied correspond to in-plane bi-axial compression in the two orthogonal directions. The findings are compared with the DNVGL PULS (Panel Ultimate Limit State) buckling code for the stiffened panels. It is found that the strength values from the ADVANCE ABAQUS and DNVGL PULS code are very close. The results and insights developed from the present work are discussed in detail.

    Description: All-electric ships (AES) are considered an effective solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions as they are a platform to use clean energy sources such as lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells and solar cells instead of fossil fuel. Even though these batteries are a promising alternative, the accuracy of the battery state of charge (SOC) estimation is a critical factor for their safe and reliable operation. The SOC is a key indicator of battery residual capacity. Its estimation can effectively prevent battery over-discharge and over-charge. Next, this enables reliable estimation of the operation time of fully electric ferries, where little time is spent at the harbour, with limited time available for charging. Thus, battery management systems are essential. This paper presents a neural network model of battery SOC estimation, using a long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network (RNN) as a method for accurate estimation of the SOC in lithium-ion batteries. The current, voltage and surface temperature of the batteries are used as the inputs of the neural network. The influence of different numbers of neurons in the neural network’s hidden layer on the estimation error is analysed, and the estimation error of the neural network under different training times is compared. In addition, the hidden layer is varied from 1 to 3 layers of the LSTM nucleus and the SOC estimation error is analysed. The results show that the maximum absolute SOC estimation error of the LSTM RNN is 1.96% and the root mean square error is 0.986%, which validates the feasibility of the method.

    Description: The decision to build a new waterway (strait) in the Polish part of the Vistula Spit was made in 2017. The new connection between the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Vistula Lagoon is planned as an artificial navigable channel with a lock and a small port. During storm surges and wind tides in the gulf or in the lagoon, sluicing will be required for vessels to tackle the Vistula Spit. This procedure does not require significant water flow through the channel in normal conditions. However, in the case of a lock failure or in the case of controlled opening of the gate to increase water exchange in the lagoon or to reduce flood risk in the Vistula Lagoon, high flow rates may occur in the navigable channel and in the neighboring port basin. In order to inves-tigate the hydraulic conditions in such extraordinary situations, numerical modeling of the hydrodynamics during water damming in the gulf or in the lagoon is performed. To analyze the hydrodynamics of the artificial connection between the sea and the lagoon during periods of high water stages, mathematical modeling is required. This paper presents the shallow water equations (SWE) model adapted to simulate the flow through the port basin and the navigable channel. The calcula-tions allowed the relation between the water head and the capacity of the navigable channel to be found, as well as to analyze circulations which may occur in the port basin.

    Description: A ship moving over the surface of water generates disturbances that are perceived as noise, both in the air and under water. Due to its density, water is an excellent medium for transmitting acoustic waves over long distances.This article describes the impact of the settings of a ship’s machinery on the nature of the generated noise. Our analysis includes the frequency characteristics of the noise generated by the moving ship. Data were obtained using an underwater measurement system, and the measured objects were two ships moving on specific trajectories with certain machinery settings. The acquired data were analysed in the frequency domain to explore the possibilities of the acoustic classification of ships and diagnostics of source mechanisms.

    Description: Adequately designed natural ventilation is the cheapest and easiest way to effectively remove indoor pollutants and keep the air inside a building fresh. A prediction of the performance and effectiveness of ventilation in order to determine the design of a ventilation system can provide real and long-term cost savings. The worst time in terms of the efficiency of natural ventilation is the spring-autumn transition period [7]. In order to improve the efficiency of natural ventilation, chimney caps are used, among others. They are designed to improve the chimney effect described in colloquial language as a chimney draft. The chimney effect is a physical phenomenon of the formation of a spontaneous flow of a warmer gas, e.g. air, from the bottom up in stem channels [12]. The article analyses the influence of the chimney cowl on the improvement of the chimney effect in an apartment of a multi-family building with natural ventilation. Long-term tests of the chimney draft were carried out for the case without and with a chimney cap. The paper presents the results of the performance (air change rate, ACH) of natural ventilation for a building with an inlet gap measured for the transitional season (between the heating and the summer season). The measurements were performed during a windy period.

    Description: There are two categories of gas-liquid mixers: conventional and special-purpose. In theory, any conventional mixer can be applied to aerate a liquid, but fast-rotating devices are generally preferred. Special-purpose mixers (tubular, prismatic, cylindrical) have a hollow shaft, and operate by drawing gas from above the surface of the liquid and dispersing it inside the liquid. This process is referred to as aspirated aeration. In contrast, conventional mixers increase the pressure of the aspirated gas. Gas drawn from above the surface of the liquid flows through channels bored inside the shaft and the impeller, and is introduced to the liquid in this way. This article presents the results of an experiment investigating the aeration efficiency of a six-tube self-aspirating mixer at different rotational speeds. The experiment was conducted in a flow tank. The results indicate that self-aspirating mixers are effective devices for water aeration and mixing.

    Description: Implant treatment is a proven method in dentistry for partial and complete missing teeth reconstruction. In some clinical situations it is advisable to limit the number of implants, which can be obtained by making a bridge connecting the patient’s own tooth with the implant. So far, the possibility of using safe and permanent connections of natural teeth with implants has been examined to a small extent due to the dangers resulting from the different mobility of dental implants and teeth.An attempt was made to use vibro-acoustic techniques to evaluate various combinations of teeth and implants. Pilot studies were carried out on cadavers-pig mandibles with implants. There were recorded sounds in the immediate vicinity of the mandible formed in response to impulse excitations carried out with a point hit against a tooth or implant before and after their joining with a bridge. The comparison of spectra allows to see features indicating a high probability of being able to distinguish between the examined configurations.The results of the research should contribute to a better understanding of the mutual relations between the dental implant and the tooth, which are included in bridge. In the perspective, it will enable to assess the level of safety and to identify clinical situations that allow to obtain dental bridges based on teeth and implants.

    Description: A three-dimensional (3D) time-domain method is developed to predict ship motions in waves. To evaluate the Froude-Krylov (F-K) forces and hydrostatic forces under the instantaneous incident wave profile, an adaptive mesh technique based on a quad-tree subdivision is adopted to generate instantaneous wet meshes for ship. For quadrilateral panels under both mean free surface and instantaneous incident wave profiles, Froude-Krylov forces and hydrostatic forces are computed by analytical exact pressure integration expressions, allowing for considerably coarse meshes without loss of accuracy. And for quadrilateral panels interacting with the wave profile, F-K and hydrostatic forces are evaluated following a quad-tree subdivision. The transient free surface Green function (TFSGF) is essential to evaluate radiation and diffraction forces based on linear theory. To reduce the numerical error due to unclear partition, a precise integration method is applied to solve the TFSGF in the partition computation time domain. Computations are carried out for a Wigley hull form and S175 container ship, and the results show good agreement with both experimental results and published results.

    Description: Tsunami disasters have frequently occurred in recent years. More and more researchers are focusing on this topic. To investi-gate the tsunami bore impact mechanism on a container model, a multi-functional slope-changing tsunami flume is built in this study. To simulate a tsunami bore, a dam-break wave was generated by a free-falling gate in a reservoir. A needle water level gauge and a high-speed camera were used to measure the tsunami wave heights and velocities for different storage water levels in the test flume, and the corresponding Froude numbers of tsunami waves were also calculated. The factors af-fecting the movement distance of the tsunami wave impacting the container model are explored in this experiment, and the results show that the movement distance is positively correlated with the storage water level, and negatively correlated with the container density and the coast slope.

    Description: Hydrotechnical constructions are mostly objects functioning in extreme conditions and requiring a custom-made construction project. In the case of using prefabricated elements, it is required to develop production, transport, assembly, conservation and repair technology. Concerning the problem of concrete cracks, modern repair systems allow positive effects to be achieved in many cases of concrete elements repair. In this work an attempt has been made to assess the properties of concrete, situated in the Baltic Sea environment, in which traditional rebar was partly replaced by dispersed fibre-phase. Fibre-reinforced concrete belongs to the group of composite materials. The presence of fibres helps to increase the tensile strength, flexural strength and resilience and also prevents the appearance of cracks. In the given paper we will also discuss basic parameters of steel and polymer fibres and the influence of both types of fibres on the maturing and hardened concrete. In this work special attention has been paid to the advantages of polypropylene and polymer fibres with regard to commonly-known steel fibres. The use of synthetic fibres will be advantageous in constructions where the reduction of shrinkage cracks and high resilience are essential. On top of that, the use of synthetic fibres is highly recommended when constructing objects that will be exposed to the impact of an aggressive environment. Undoubtedly, polymer fibres are resistant to the majority of corrosive environments. Fibre-reinforced concretes are a frequently implemented construction solution. The possibility of concrete modification allows the emergence of new construction materials with improved physical-mechanical properties, under the condition of being applied relevantly.

    Description: At present, LNG vessels without reliquefaction plants consume the BOG (boil-off gas) in their engines and the excess is burned in the gas combustion unit without recovering any of its energy content. Excess BOG energy could be captured to produce H2, a fuel with high energy density and zero emissions, through the installation of a reforming plant. Such H2 production would, in turn, require on-board storage for its subsequent consumption in the propulsion plant when navigating in areas with stringent anti-pollution regulations, thus reducing CO2 and SOX emissions. This paper presents a review of the different H2 storage systems and the methods of burning it in propulsion engines, to demonstrate the energetic viability thereof on board LNG vessels. Following the analysis, it is identified that a pressurised and cooled H2 storage system is the best suited to an LNG vessel due to its simplicity and the fact that it does not pose a safety hazard. There are a number of methods for consuming the H2 generated in the DF engines that comprise the propulsion plant, but the use of a mixture of 70% CH4-30% H2 is the most suitable as it does not require any modifications to the injection system. Installation of an on-board reforming plant and H2 storage system generates sufficient H2 to allow for almost 3 days’ autonomy with a mixture of 70%CH4-30%H2. This reduces the engine consumption of CH4 by 11.38%, thus demonstrating that the system is not only energy-efficient, but lends greater versatility to the vessel.

    Description: In order to quickly obtain practical ship forms with good resistance performance, based on the linear wave-making resistance theory, the optimal design method of ship forms with minimum total resistance is discussed by using the non-linear programming (NLP) method. Taking the total resistance as the objective function (the Michell integral is used to calculate the wave-making resistance and the equivalent plate friction resistance formula is used to calculate the frictional resistance), the hull surface offset as the design variable and appropriate displacement as the basic constraints, and considering the additional constraints, the hull bow shape and the whole ship are optimised, and an improved hull form is obtained. The resistance of the ship before and after optimisation is calculated by the CFD method to further evaluate the resistance reduction effect and performance after optimisation. Finally, an example of optimisation calculation of an actual high-speed ship is given. The obvious resistance reduction results confirm the reliability of the optimisation design method.

    Description: The paper presents the results of experimental studies on distortion of the fixed plate edge due to formation of a butt joint. This is a hidden form of weld distortion present in structural nodes and identified at the ship hull pre-fabrication stages. The investigations were performed according to a design of experiment (DoE) approach in laboratory conditions resembling those encountered in the shipbuilding industry. The presented analysis includes the technological–construction parameters influencing the evaluated distortion shape. The implemented method of experimental results evaluation allows the utilisation of the approximation dependence to predict the fixed plate edge distortion in large-scale steel structures.

    Description: To solve the nonlinear control problems of the unknown time-varying environmental disturbances and parametric uncertainties for ship course-keeping control, this paper presents an adaptive self-regulation PID (APID) scheme which can ensure the boundedness of all signals in the ship course-keeping control system by using the Lyapunov direct method. Compared with the traditional PID control scheme, the APID control scheme not only is independent of the model parameters and the unknown input, but also can regulate the gain of PID adaptively and resist time-varying disturbances well. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness and the robustness of the proposed control scheme.

    Description: Usually, the concept of sufficient stability of a floating structure is connected with the capacity to keep a small heel angle despite the moment of heeling. The variable responsible for these characteristics is the initial metacentric height, which is the relation between the hydrostatic features of the pontoon and the mass properties of the entire object. This article answers the questions of how heavy the floating system should be, what the minimum acceptable draft is, and whether it is beneficial to use internal fixed ballast. To cover various technologies, a theoretical model of a cuboid float with average density representing different construction materials was analysed. The results indicate that the common practice of using heavy and deep floating systems is not always reasonable. In the case of floating buildings, which, unlike ships, can be exploited only under small heel angles, the shape and width of the submerged part of the object may influence the stability more than the weight or draft.

    Description: The article describes the methodology related to determining the multi-criteria routes for sailing ships. Details of sea area discretisation and discretisation of the description of the sailing vessel properties and manoeuvring principles are shown. User requirements were specified (for five different categories of users) and on this basis the criteria for selecting the most suitable shipping route were formulated. The presented algorithm recommends a route for a given user category by means of defined restrictions and configuration parameters. The applied multi-criteria approach proves the universality and usability of the sailing ship route planning method.

    Description: In order to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients that can save cost and meet the accuracy requirements, a new hydrodynamic test platform based on a 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) parallel mechanism is proposed in this paper. The test platform can drive the ship to move in six degrees of freedom. By using this experimental platform, the corresponding hydrodynamic coefficients can be measured. Firstly, the structure of the new device is introduced. The working principle of the model is deduced based on the mathematical model. Then the hydrodynamic coefficients of a test ship model of a KELC tank ship with a scale of 1:150 are measured and 8 typical hydrodynamic coefficients are obtained. Finally, the measured data are compared with the value of a real ship. The deviation is less than 10% which meets the technical requirements of the practical project. The efficiency of measuring the hydrodynamic coefficients of physical models of ships and offshore structures is improved by the device. The method of measuring the hydrodynamic coefficients by using the proposed platform provides a certain reference for predicting the hydrodynamic performance of ships and offshore structures.

    Description: The dynamic development of additive manufacturing technologies, especially over the last few years, has increased the range of possible industrial applications of 3D printed elements. This is a consequence of the distinct advantages of additive techniques, which include the possibility of improving the mechanical strength of products and shortening lead times. Offshore industry is one of these promising areas for the application of additive manufacturing. This paper presents a decision support method for the manufacturing of offshore equipment components, and compares a standard subtractive method with an additive manufacturing approach. An analytic hierarchy process was applied to select the most effective and efficient production method, considering CNC milling and direct metal laser sintering. A final set of decision criteria that take into account the specifics of the offshore industry sector are provided.

    Description: The article specifies the dependence of defects occurring in the lamination process in the production of yachts. Despite great knowledge about their genesis, they cannot be completely eliminated. Authentic data obtained through cooperation with one of the Polish yacht shipyards during the years 2013–2017 were used for the analysis. To perform a simulation, the sample size was observed in 1450 samples, consisting of 6 models of yachts with closed and open deck. Finding the dependence of the occurrence of specific defects will allow for faster procedures and more effective quality control, which will contribute to lower costs. The use of new methods based on artificial intelligence related to Big Data allows for easier observation of dependencies in the complex structure of data from yacht production. The association rules were defined using the algorithm Apriori and define interdependent defects. A number of dependencies were found for the occurrence of production defects not obvious to technologists, but occurring with a high probability of coexistence. The presented research results may allow the planning process of production tasks to be improved.

    Description: Simulation of the hydrodynamic performance of a floating current turbine in a combined wave and flow environment is important. In this paper, ANSYS-CFX software is used to analyse the hydrodynamic performance of a vertical-axis turbine with various influence factors such as tip speed ratio, pitching frequency and amplitude. Time-varying curves for thrust and lateral forces are fitted with the least squares method; the added mass and damping coefficients are refined to analyse the influence of the former factors. The simulation results demonstrate that, compared with non-pitching and rotating turbines under constant inflow, the time-varying load of rotating turbines with pitching exhibits an additional fluctuation. The pitching motion of the turbine has a positive effect on the power output. The fluctuation amplitudes of thrust and lateral force envelope curves have a positive correlation with the frequency and amplitude of the pitching motion and tip speed ratio, which is harmful to the turbine’s structural strength. The mean values of the forces are slightly affected by pitching frequencies and amplitudes, but positively proportional to the tip speed ratio of the turbine. Based upon the least squares method, the thrust and lateral force coefficients can be divided into three components, uniform load coefficient, added mass and damping coefficients, the middle one being significantly smaller than the other two. Damping force plays a more important role in the fluctuation of loads induced by pitching motion. These results can facilitate study of the motion response of floating vertical-axis tidal current turbine systems in waves.

    Description: Due to the complexity of the marine environment, in deep-sea drilling, all kinds of strings are corroded by different deep-sea conditions for a long time, accompanied by high temperature and high pressure, which lead to the continuous change of mechanical properties of materials. In order to solve the problem that the material mechanical parameters cannot be accurately described in the performance analysis of the casing, deep-sea simulated corrosion and material damage experiments of P110 material were carried out in this paper. Mass loss and tensile experiments on corrosion-damaged test pieces were conducted under different corrosion experimental periods. The changes in mechanical properties of the material were analyzed. Equations of the variation of the equivalent yield strength and the equivalent tensile strength were obtained. The results show that the equivalent yield strength and the equivalent tensile strength decrease with the increase of the weight loss rate. Based on the experimental results and finite element analysis, a method for establishing the material corrosion model was proposed in this paper. The deep-sea drilling corrosion performance model of P110 material was established, which greatly reduced the error caused by the material uniformity assumption in finite element analysis. This paper provides a theoretical basis for the analysis of reliability and life of P110 materials in wells.

    Description: The paper presents a multi-objective method, which optimises the route of a sailboat. The presented method makes use of an evolutionary multi-objective (EMO) algorithm, which performs the optimisation according to three objective functions: total passage time, a sum of all course alterations made during the voyage and the average angle of heel. The last two of the objective functions reflect the navigator’s and passenger’s comfort, which may decrease with multiple turns or when experiencing an excessive heel angle for a long time. The optimisation process takes into account static bathymetry-related constraints as well as dynamic constraints related to the sailboat’s safety in changing wind and wave conditions. The method makes use of all of the above and finally returns an approximated Pareto set containing non-dominated solutions to the optimisation problem. The developed method has been implemented as a simulation application. The paper includes selected simulation results followed by their discussion.

    Description: This article is Part II of the paper containing a description and results of the experimental studies of the deformations, friction processes and structural damping that occur in the foundation bolted joints of propulsion plant components and auxiliary machinery installed on sea-going ships. Part I of this research work presents an analysis of the rigid mountings of machines and devices to the foundations on steel or resin chocks, and explains the need to carry out relevant research in this area. It also presents the description and results of experimental studies carried out for a foundation bolted joint with a conventionally used steel chock. Part II (this article) contains a description and results of similar studies carried out for a foundation bolted joint with a modern chock – cast from epoxy resin compound (EPY), specially developed for this purpose. Then, a comparative analysis of the results obtained for both bolted joints in question was made and the foundation chocks of the poured-in-place resin compound were demonstrated to better fulfill their technical tasks than the steel chocks traditionally used for this purpose.

    Description: A spectrum of low-frequency (20–30 Hz) amplitude fluctuations of the ultrasonic (10 MHz) signal specularly scattered from water surfaces covered with monomolecular and thicker crude oil origin films of well-defined, oceanographically relevant viscoelastic properties was examined in laboratory and at-sea conditions. The relationship between the surface water wave (30 Hz) damping coefficient and the oil layer thickness was established, and compared to the one predicted by the classical Stokes theory. The depression of the spectral energy density of wind-driven waves by surface films was inferred from the ratio of acoustic signal fluctuations spectra with/without films, and compared to that resulting from the Marangoni damping theory applicable to monolayers of particular surface viscoelasticity. The agreement between the theory and experimental data was satisfactory. As shown in at-sea experiments performed with a free-floating, buoy-like acoustic system, and an artificial oil slick spread over the Baltic Sea surface, the film’s rheological surface properties can be recovered from acoustic surface probing, as well as oil spill edge detection. Simultaneous statistical analyses of the scattered signal amplitude distribution parameters turned out to be unequivocally related to the oil substance fraction weight, oil layer thickness, and the form of oil contamination.

First key elements are converted by a systematic planning method that is often applied in factory layout, and a preliminary cabin placement layout model is established according to these key elements. Then the circulation strength and adjacency strength are taken as sub-objectives to establish a mathematical model, and an improved genetic algorithm is used to optimise the model. The result of the optimisation is compared with the initial schemes to verify the validity of the algorithm. Finally, the human factors are introduced according to the actual situation. The AHP method is used to select the layout scheme of the cabin that is most likely to be applied in the actual cabin layout.

    Description: The Stirling engine is a device in which thermal energy is transformed into mechanical energy without any contact between the heat carrier and the working gas enclosed in the engine. The mentioned feature makes this type of engine very attractive for the use of the recovery energy taken from other heat devices. One of the potential applications of Stirling engines is the use of thermal energy generated in the ship’s engine room for producing electricity. The work presents the concept of the Stirling engine type alpha powered by the recovery energy. The model of Stirling engine developed in this work allows a quantitative assessment of the impact of the design features of the engine, primarily the heat exchange surfaces and the volume of control spaces, on the achieved efficiency and power of the engine. Using an iterative procedure, Stirling engine simulation tests were carried out taking into account the variable structural features of the system. The influence of the size of the heater and the cooler, as well as the effectiveness of the regenerator and the temperature of the heat source on the efficiency and power produced by the Stirling engine have been presented.

    Description: Pollution of the marine environment by ship garbage is an urgent problem to be solved at home and abroad. The ship kitchen garbage vacuum collection system is a new environmental protection scheme for garbage disposal. It has many advantages, such as using a pipeline instead of manual operation, creating high-level sanitary conditions, realising completely closed garbage collection and transportation, eliminating cross-pollution, saving space and so on. In this paper, the system is modelled, and the calculation of pipeline pressure loss, the vacuum degree of the vacuum tank and the energy consumption of the system are briefly introduced. In order to reduce the energy consumption, an algorithm for the emptying and discharging port is presented. In order to solve the problem of optimising relevant parameters, the vacuum transport mechanism of garbage is studied based on an optimisation model of the pipe network, and the experimental platform of a simulation device is set up. In engineering, this is of great significance to the design of cruise ship garbage collection and treatment systems and the development of supporting technology.

    Description: The article presents a continuation of research carried out concerning identification of energy consequences of mechanical fatigue within a propeller shaft in a rotating mechanical system, while working under conditions of the loss of the required alignment of shaft lines. Experimental research was carried out on a physical model reflecting a full-sized real object: i.e., the propulsion system of the ship. It is proven, by means of an active experiment, that changes in propeller shaft deflection are reflected in the amount of dissipated kinetic energy of masses in rotational motion and the accumulated internal energy in its construction material. Adoption of a high-cycle fatigue syndrome, consisting of diagnostic symptoms determined from the action of the propeller shaft associated with the transformation of mechanical energy into work and heat, as well as with the generation of mechanical vibrations and elastic waves of acoustic emission, is proposed. To assess the diagnostic information quantity brought about by the defined features of propeller shaft fatigue, an experimental research program was developed and implemented, in which two statistical hypotheses are verified: the significance of the impact of the values enforcing the fatigue process, presented in the first part of the article, and the adequacy of the regression equation describing the fatigue durability of the propeller shaft in the energy aspect, constituting the second part of the article. This finally gives us the opportunity, after the appropriate translation of the model test results into full-sized real objects, to develop a methodology to diagnose marine propeller shaft fatigue in operating conditions.     Description: Recently a new type of autonomous underwater vehicle uses artificial fins to imitate the movements of marine animals, e.g. fish. These vehicles are biomimetic and their driving system is an undulating propulsion. There are two main methods of reproducing undulating motion. The first method uses a flexible tail fin, which is connected to a rigid hull by a movable axis. The second method is based on the synchronised operation of several mechanical joints to imitate the tail movement that can be observed among real marine animals such as fish. This paper will examine the first method of reproducing tail fin movement. The goal of the research presented in the paper is to identify the parameters of the one-piece flexible fin kinematics model. The model needs further analysis, e.g. using it with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in order to select the most suitable prototype for a Biomimetic Underwater Vehicle (BUV). The background of the work is explained in the first section of the paper and the kinematic model for the flexible fin is described in the next section. The following section is entitled Materials and Methods, and includes a description of a laboratory test of a water tunnel, a description of a Vision Algorithm (VA)which was used to determine the positions of the fin, and a Genetic Algorithm (GA) which was used to find the parameters of the kinematic fin. In the next section, the results of the research are presented and discussed. At the end of the paper, the summary including main conclusions and a schedule of the future research is inserted.

    Description: The classification of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) underwater acoustic signals in complex acoustic environments and increasingly small target radiation noise is a hot research topic.. This paper proposes a new method for signal processing—low SNR underwater acoustic signal classification method (LSUASC)—based on intrinsic modal features maintaining dimensionality reduction. Using the LSUASC method, the underwater acoustic signal was first transformed with the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) and the intrinsic mode was extracted. the intrinsic mode was then transformed into a corresponding Mel-frequency cepstrum coefficient (MFCC) to form a multidimensional feature vector of the low SNR acoustic signal. Next, a semi-supervised fuzzy rough Laplacian Eigenmap (SSFRLE) method was proposed to perform manifold dimension reduction (local sparse and discrete features of underwater acoustic signals can be maintained in the dimension reduction process) and principal component analysis (PCA) was adopted in the process of dimension reduction to define the reduced dimension adaptively. Finally, Fuzzy C-Means (FCMs), which are able to classify data with weak features was adopted to cluster the signal features after dimensionality reduction. The experimental results presented here show that the LSUASC method is able to classify low SNR underwater acoustic signals with high accuracy.

    Description: The combustion and emission characteristics of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) fuelled by methyl decanoate (MD) with different engine speeds and dimethyl ether (DME) mixing ratios are investigated in this work. Engine data of a MAN B&W 6S70MC low-speed two-stroke marine diesel engine were used for the reactor. The results show that a decrease of engine speed has little effect on the in-cylinder temperature and pressure of the engine at constant excess air coefficient of 1.5. Meanwhile, NOx emissions decrease with a decrease of engine speed in pure MD HCCI combustion. The results also indicate that NOx and CO2 emissions decrease significantly with an increase in the percentage of DME in MD and DME mixing combustion at a constant total mole fraction and engine speed of 85 revolutions per minute (r/min).

    Description: Propeller cavitation is a main source of fluctuating pressure and noise induced by propellers, and the tip vortex cavitation is the principal source. The present study measures the flow fields near the blade tip using the 2D-PIV technique. The experimental setup and scheme are introduced. We monitor the process of generation and shedding of the propeller tip vortex in real time and analyse the dynamic structure of the tip vortex by testing the propeller wake field under different phases of the axial plane. The distribution characteristics of radial and axial velocity are also analysed. The influence range and the vorticity of the tip vortex and trailing vortex are obtained. All of the measured quantitative data are useful for future propeller design.

    Description: A new T-type connection structure consisting of composite sandwich plates, reinforced cores and adhesive was proposed for the construction of lightweight ships to resolve connection problems between bulkheads and decks of composite lightweight ship superstructures. Based on the design principles and mechanical properties of composite structures, the mechanical behaviour of the structure under a dangerous loading condition was investigated. In addition, the ultimate bearing capacities and damage modes were examined, the results of which demonstrated that the strength of the structure is weak, and that the adhesive and reinforced core between the face plate and the web plate is the primary weakness of the structure. A numerical simulation method was verified using the results of the mechanical tests, and five characteristic paths at the connection area were established. The stresses and displacements along the five paths were calculated using the numerical method. Then, variations in the geometric parameter and the strength and weight of the connection were summarised. The optimal angle of the adhesive bonding area is approximately 60°, which supports the optimal design and practical application of the lightweight ship adhesive-bonded connection structure.

The possibilities of supporting navigation systems with underwater observation systems are explored here. The research was carried out using an underwater measurement system. Local disturbances of the hydroacoustic and hydrodynamic field from the moving vessels were analysed. The potential for identifying a moving vessel, for example for offshore infrastructure security purposes, is demonstrated.

    Description: A low-pressure gas supply system for dual fuel engines was designed to transport liquid natural gas from a storage tank to a dual fuel engine and gasify it during transportation. The heat exchange area and pressure drop in the spiral- wound heat exchanger, the volume of the buffer tank and the pressure drop in the pipeline of the gas supply system were calculated by programming using Python. Experiments were carried out during the process of starting and running the dual fuel engine using this gas supply system. Experimental data show that the gas supply system can supply gas stably during the process and ensure the stable operation of the dual fuel engine. The effects of the parameters of natural gas and ethylene glycol solution on the heat exchange area of the spiral-wound heat exchanger and the volume of the buffer tank in the gas supply system were studied. The results show that the heat exchange area calculated according to pure methane can adapt to the case of non-pure methane. The temperature difference between natural gas and ethylene glycol solution should be increased in order to reduce the heat exchange area. The heat exchange area selected according to the high pressure of natural gas can adapt to the low pressure of natural gas. The volume of the buffer tank should be selected according to the situation of the minimum methane content to adapt to the situation of high methane content. The main influencing factor in selecting the volume of the buffer tank is the natural gas flow. The results can provide guidance for the design of the gas supply system for dual fuel engines.

    Description: It is widely accepted that vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is a major concern in the design of deep sea top-tensioned risers, especially when the riser is subjected to axial parametric excitations. An improved time domain prediction model was proposed in this paper. The prediction model was based on classical van der Pol wake oscillator models, and the impacts of the riser in-line vibration and vessel heave motion were considered. The finite element, Newmark-β and Newton‒Raphson methods were adopted to solve the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. The entire numerical solution process was realised by a self-developed program based on MATLAB. Comparisons between the numerical calculation and the published experimental test were conducted in this paper. The in-line and cross-flow VIV responses of a real size top-tensioned riser in linear sheared flow were analysed. The effects of the vessel heave amplitude and frequency on the riser VIV were also studied. The results show that the vibration displacements of the riser are larger than the case without vessel heave motion. The vibration modes and frequencies of the riser are also changed due to the vessel heave motion

    Description: Experimental tests and numerical simulations of a full-scale segment of a foot and cycle bridge made of polymer composites are presented in the paper. The analysed structure is made of sandwich panels, which consist of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) multi-layered laminate faces and a PET foam (obtained from recycling) core. The dimensions of the segment cross-section are the same as for the target footbridge; however, span length was reduced to 3 m.The experimental tests were conducted in a laboratory of the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology at Gdansk University of Technology. A single vertical force was generated by a hydraulic cylinder and was applied to the platform of the structure. The experimental tests were supported by numerical analyses performed in Femap with NX Nastran software by means of the finite element method (FEM). Results obtained in the computational model were compared with results from experiments. Thus, the numerical model was validated and the obtained conclusions were used in the next step of the design process of a composite footbridge with a span length of 14.5 m.

    Description: The article presents a unique atypical application of the sonography technique and a methodological description of the introduction of this technique to research. The Bayesian approach applied to validation of the Doppler method for intravascular detection of the free gas phase instead of typical statistical inference has been demonstrated in the article. It describes the place of this method in the diving research work conducted in the Polish Naval Academy without any detailed analysis of the results achieved in the studies on decompression supported by ultrasonic detection of the free gas phase in venous vessels. It is a commonly held opinion that Doppler ultrasonic detection of the intravascular free gas phase is not a procedure that can be particularly useful in decompression research. The main objection is that detection of the free gas phase in venous vessels is a weak function to predict the presence of the free gas phase in tissues and arterial blood, so this method is not suitable for assessing the risk of decompression. Only a few countries disagree with this commonly held view and use this method to assess the risk of decompression in decompression studies. France has introduced detection of the free gas phase in venous vessels for diving research and then, together with Canada, improved this method, and developed it to a standard form. Based on the published results of the Canadian research, the technique was evaluated at the Naval Academy using statistical methods. The Academy accepted and adopted the results of this research and started to use this method in its own research on decompression over 25 years ago and continues to use it to great effect.

    Description: The paper concerns the design analysis of a hybrid gas turbine power plant with a fuel cell (stack). The aim of this work was to find the most favourable variant of the medium capacity (approximately 10 MW) hybrid system. In the article, computational analysis of two variants of such a system was carried out. The analysis made it possible to calculate the capacity, efficiency of both variants and other parameters like the flue gas temperature. The paper shows that such hybrid cycles can theoretically achieve extremely high efficiency over 60%. The most favourable one was selected for further detailed thermodynamic and flow calculations. As part of this calculation, a multi-stage axial compressor, axial turbine, fuel cell (stack) and regenerative heat exchanger were designed. Then an analysis of the profitability of the installation was carried out, which showed that the current state of development of this technology and its cost make the project unprofitable. For several years, however, tendencies of decreasing prices of fuel cells have been observed, which allows the conclusion that hybrid systems will start to be created. This may apply to both stationary and marine applications. Hybrid solutions related to electrical power transmission, including fuel cells, are real and very promising for smaller car ferries and shorter ferry routes.

    Description: The self-propulsion test of underwater vehicles is the key technique for predicting and evaluating the navigation performance of these submersibles. In this study, the numerical simulation of a standard propeller JD7704+Ka4-70 is first presented and the results are compared with experiments to validate the numerical approaches. The reason why the propulsion efficiency of the ducted propeller is higher than that of the conventional propeller is explored. Then, the paper proposes a series of numerical simulations conducted to test the performance of the ducted propeller designed according to the JD7704+Ka4-70 in order to match with the unmanned semi-submerged vehicle (USSV), and the propeller’s open water characteristic curves are obtained. The results show a reasonable agreement with the regression analysis. Afterwards, the numerical simulations focus on a self-propulsion test of the USSV with the designed ducted propeller and the self-propulsion point is obtained. The streamlines through the hull as well as the ducted propellers are clearly obtained, together with the velocity distributions of the propeller plane. The results vividly demonstrate the hydrodynamic performance of the USSV with the designed propellers. In this paper, all the CFD simulations are based on the numerical software, Star-CCM+, and use the Reynolds-averaged Navier‒Stokes (RANS) equations with the shear stress transport (SST) k-omega turbulence model.

    Description: In this paper, mechanical losses in a hydraulic motor supplied with water and mineral oil (two liquids having significantly different viscosity and lubricating properties) are described and compared. The experimental tests were conducted using a special design (prototype) of a hydraulic satellite motor. The design of the satellite motor is presented. This motor was developed to supply both with water and mineral oil and features a non-circular tooth working mechanism. The paper also characterizes sources of mechanical losses in this motor. On this basis, a mathematical model of these losses has been developed and presented. The results of calculation of mechanical losses according to the model are compared with the experimental results. Experimental studies have shown that the mechanical losses in the motor supplied with water are 2.8 times greater than those in the motor supplied with oil. The work demonstrates that the mechanical losses in both the motor supplied with water and the one supplied with oil are described well by the mathematical model. It has been found that for the loaded motor working at high speed, the simulation results differ from experimental ones by no more than 3% for oil and 4% for water.

    Description: The article presents a parametric method applicable in assessing the suction force of a slender body to the seabed, and prognosing the body extrication time. Along with the body weight in water, the information on the suction force is essential for assessing the force needed to lift the object from the seabed. Based on the Foda theory and the resulting integral equation, which relates the maximum suction force with basic parameters of the issue of concern, the parametric method has been developed which can be widely applied in engineering practice of lifting objects. A set of discrete values of parameters selected from the range of typical values for engineering practice was the basis for developing algebraic formulas approximating the integral Foda equation for slender bodies. The included results of tests present the variability of suction force characteristics and the envelopes of maximum forces needed to extricate the body from the seabed.

    Description: A cylinder liner and piston ring running under starved lubrication near the top dead centre (TDC) and bottom dead centre (BDC) cause abnormal friction and wear during operation of a marine diesel engine. The method of laser texturing is proposed to improve the surface friction property under this condition. Spherical crown pits with different parameters were formed on the surface of samples by femtosecond laser processing. The BDC and TDC conditions of oil starvation were simulated in a reciprocating friction and wear experiment, and a numerical model of surface texture lubrication based on the Reynolds equation was established. The influence of the distribution density, diameter, and depth parameters of the texture on the surface properties was studied. In the BDC condition, compared with the untextured surface, the average coefficient of friction (COF) can be reduced by up to 24% and the average friction force can be reduced by up to 18%. In the TDC condition, the COF can be reduced by up to 19%, and the average friction force can be reduced by up to 18%. Therefore, the textures with various parameters should be arranged in different positions on the cylinder liner; more attention should be paid to the optimisation of diameter in the texture of the cylinder liner near the BDC, whereas more attention should be paid to the optimisation of distribution density in the texture of the cylinder liner near the TDC

    Description: Hydraulic cylinders play a vital role in the energy output (PTO) system of an oscillating float-type wave energy converter, whose function is to convert the mechanical energy captured by the float from the waves into hydraulic energy. The performance of the hydraulic cylinder determines the conversion efficiency of mechanical energy to hydraulic energy in the system; therefore, it is necessary to study the working mechanism of the hydraulic cylinder. This paper takes a self-developed oscillating float-type wave energy converter as the research object, and studies the working mechanism of its hydraulic cylinder, and uses the linear analysis method to derive the critical self-excited vibration curve of the hydraulic cylinder. In addition, the effects of the external load, hydraulic cylinder load mass, stroke length, spring stiffness and piston area on the performance of the hydraulic cylinder were studied by AMESim simulation software. According to the simulation results, a physical model of the hydraulic cylinder is established. Finally, the physical model is tested in a hydrodynamic pool. The test results show that the hydraulic cylinder can stably and efficiently convert mechanical energy into hydraulic energy even under small waves, thus verifying the rationality of the hydraulic cylinder design.

    Description: The paper deals with issues connected with the behaviour of a streamer cable towed by a survey seismic vessel when the cable undergoes a strike triggered by collision with an underwater moving object. The consequences of such collisions may be both threat to the life of marine animals or damage to underwater units and large economic losses suffered by vessel owners. The risk of such collisions has increased over the last years as a result of increased offshore seismic survey operations. Therefore, a towed streamer should be very robust. To assure its robustness, we should know the deformation mechanism of a single streamer cable. This in turn requires the development of an appropriate mathematical model of such a phenomenon.In particular, the paper presents the characteristics of seismic survey vessels and streamers; an analysis of collisions that have occurred in the past; a statement of the problem, and a computer-aided system supporting simulation of the cable behaviour. To obtain all the necessary design parameters regarding the deformation mechanism of a streamer cable, we set up a dedicated computer-aided system that supports their calculation.

    Description: The ricochet behaviour of the air–water trans-media vehicle (AWTMV) during water-entry crossing was experimentally investigated. Three types of small-scale AWTMV including cone, ogive, and flat nose were used in the test. The underwater trajectory, velocity, and inclination angle of projectiles during the ricochet process were obtained using a high-speed camera. The angle change of the AWTMV and the ratio of the residual velocity are introduced. Based on this result, the relationship between the ricochet responses and initial conditions was derived. The results of this study show that (1) a small incident angle and great velocity make the occurrence of ricochet behaviour easier, (2) the stability of the trajectory of projectiles with cone, ogive, and flat nose weakened in turn at the same initial conditions, (3) the angle change and the ratio of the residual velocity are linear functions of the incident angle and velocity.

    Description: The article presents the three-state semi-Markov model of the process {W(t): t ≥ 0} of state transitions of a ship power plant machine, with the following interpretation of these states: s1 – state of full serviceability, s2 – state of partial serviceability, and s3 – state of unserviceability. These states are precisely defined for the ship main engine (ME). A hypothesis is proposed which explains the possibility of application of this model to examine models of real state transitions of ship power plant machines. Empirical data concerning ME were used for calculating limiting probabilities for the process {W(t): t ≥ 0}. The applicability of these probabilities in decision making with the assistance of the Bayesian statistical theory is demonstrated. The probabilities were calculated using a procedure included in the computational software MATHEMATICA, taking into consideration the fact that the random variables representing state transition times of the process {W(t): t ≥ 0} have gamma distributions. The usefulness of the Bayesian statistical theory in operational decision-making concerning ship power plants is shown using a decision dendrite which maps ME states and consequences of particular decisions, thus making it possible to choose between the following two decisions: d1 – first perform a relevant preventive service of the engine to restore its state and then perform the commissioned task within the time limit determined by the customer, and d2 – omit the preventive service and start performing the commissioned task.

    Description: The longitudinal motion characteristics of a slender trimaran equipped with and without a T-foil near the bow are investigated by experimental and numerical methods. Computational fluid dynamics ( CFD) method is used in this study. The seakeeping characteristics such as heave, pitch and vertical acceleration in head regular waves are analyzed in various wave conditions. Numerical simulations have been validated by comparisons with experimental tests. The influence of large wave amplitudes and size of T-foil on the longitudinal motion of trimaran are analyzed. The present systematic study demonstrates that the numerical results are in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The research implied that the longitudinal motion response values are greatly reduced with the use of T-foil.

    Description: The paper presents design, structure and architecture of the Universal Autonomous Control and Management System (UACAMS) for multipurpose unmanned surface vessel. The system was designed, installed and implemented on the multipurpose platform - unmanned surface vessel named HydroDron. The platform is designed to execute hydrographic survey missions with multi-variant configuration of the survey system (payload?) including multi-beam echo sounder, sonar, LiDAR, automotive radar, photographic and spectral camera systems. The UACAMS designed to provide flexibility that enables to operate on the different kind of surface platform and different type of functional payload. The full system configuration provides all four level of autonomy starting from remotely controlled to full autonomous mission. Each level can be implemented and run depending on user specific requirements. The paper explains the differences between autonomous and automatic mission and shows how the autonomy is implemented into the presented system. The full hardware structural design as well as the software architecture are described. In order to confirm initial assumptions the applied system was tested during four- week sea trials and tuned for a selected vessel to confirm assumptions. In the project, also the original shore control station was designed, produced and tested for the vessel, including specific user controls and radio communication system. Conclusions sum up all crucial points of the design and system implementation process.

    Description: This paper proposes an improved Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach including a fuzzy compensator in order to track desired trajectories of autonomous Underwater Vehicle Manipulator Systems (UVMS). The tracking performance can be affected by robot dynamical model uncertainties and applied external disturbances. Nevertheless, the MPC as a known proficient nonlinear control approach should be improved by the uncertainty estimator and disturbance compensator particularly in high nonlinear circumstances such as underwater environment in which operation of the UVMS is extremely impressed by added nonlinear terms to its model. In this research, a new methodology is proposed to promote robustness virtue of MPC that is done by designing a fuzzy compensator based on the uncertainty and disturbance estimation in order to reduce or even omit undesired effects of these perturbations. The proposed control design is compared with conventional MPC control approach to confirm the superiority of the proposed approach in terms of robustness against uncertainties, guaranteed stability and precision.

    Description: To obtain a reasonable evaluation of the performance of waterjet propulsion at the design stage, a semi-theoretical and semi-empirical method is used to calculate the fundamental parameters of waterjet propulsion performance using an iterative approach. To calculate the ship’s resistance, a boundary element method based on three-dimensional potential flow theory is used to solve the wave-making resistance, and an empirical approach is used to evaluate the viscous resistance. Finally, the velocity and pressure of the capture area of the waterjet propulsion control volume are solved based on turbulent boundary layer theory. The iteration equation is established based on the waterjet-hull force-balance equation, and the change in the ship’s attitude and the local loss of the intake duct are considered. The performance parameters of waterjet propulsion, such as resistance, waterjet thrust, thrust deduction, and the physical quantity of the control volume, are solved by iteration. In addition, a PID-controlled free-running ship model is simulated using the RANS CFD method as a comparison. We apply the proposed approach and the RANS CFD method to a waterjet-propelled trimaran model, and the simulation process and the results are presented and discussed. Although there are some differences between the two methods in terms of the local pressure distribution and thrust deduction, the relative error in the evaluation results for the waterjet propulsion performance is generally reasonable and acceptable. This indicates that the present method can be used at the early stages of ship design without partial information about the waterjet propulsion system, and especially in the absence of a physical model of the pump.

    Description: In recent years, there has been a significant development in “green” and energy efficient propulsion systems, which fits into the general trend of environmentally friendly “green shipping”. The pursued goal is to construct a safe passenger ship that is low in energy demand and equipped with a highly energy efficient, emission-free propulsion system. The paper presents main problems encountered by designers of a small, hybrid-powered ferry powered lithium batteries. The conducted research allowed to create a design of an energy efficient hull shape, which decreases the demand for energy. Completed remote control model tests resulted in a proposal of an energy efficient and safe propulsion system with good manoeuvring capabilities. Measurements completed on an existing ferry permitted completing energy balance and forming an energy management policy. The paper contains the emission calculations computed for the existing ferry that are necessary for the environmental impact analysis. The soon to be constructed, newly designed vessel will provide a valuable contribution to hybrid-propulsion, energy management and unmanned technologies research.

    Description: It is clear that the advantages of fibre glass-reinforced plastics surpass those of steel, but the failure analysis of composite structures is much more complex than that of isotropic materials as composite materials may fail in a variety of ways. In order to simulate the damage and fracture of bolted joints of fibre reinforced composite, the bond-based peridynamic method suitable for elastic, brittle and anisotropic characteristics of composite material is used. The peridynamic model for composite laminate is validated by the finite element method. Then a peridynamic program of composite damage is applied to calculating the damage of bolted joint structure and the damage propagation process and failure mode of the structure is obtained.

    Description: The article presents the development of author’s concept of a diesel/hydraulic propulsion system for inland watercraft. Due to specific nature of vessel navigation on rivers, classical propulsion systems with shaft lines can be effectively replaced by systems with hydraulic power transmission. A solution is also presented of a hybrid design with extra electric port having the form of a pumping system driven from a battery of accumulators.     Description: The article aims at defining and analysing the energy loss coefficients in design solutions of rotating displacement machines, with a piston machine as an example. The energy losses observed in these machines include mechanical loss, volumetric loss, and pressure loss. The scale and relations between these losses in different machines depend on machine design and manufacturing quality, and on operating parameters. The operating parameters, in turn, which affect directly or indirectly the above losses depend on whether the machine works in pump or hydraulic motor regime. The article is also a contribution to the development of a library of ki coefficients which define the losses in displacement machines, as the knowledge about these coefficients makes it possible to assess fast and easily the energy efficiency of a machine or drive system at each point of its working area.

    Description: This paper presents a new robust Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm for trajectory tracking of an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) in presence of the time-varying external disturbances including winds, waves and ocean currents as well as dynamical uncertainties. For fulfilling the robustness property, a sliding mode control-based procedure for designing of MPC and a super-twisting term are adopted. The MPC algorithm has been known as an effective approach for the implementation simplicity and its fast dynamic response. The proposed hybrid controller has been implemented in MATLAB / Simulink environment. The results for the combined Model Predictive Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control (MP-STSMC) algorithm have shown that it significantly outperforms conventional MPC algorithm in terms of the transient response, robustness and steady state response and presents an effective chattering attenuation in comparison with the Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control (STSMC) algorithm.
