Notizen: Abstract— Impact fatigue tests were carried out using a rotating-disk type impact fatigue testing machine. The influence of prior austenite grain size, ductile-brittle transition temperature and test temperature on impact fatigue crack growth rate was investigated by means of fracture mechanics and fractography in quenched and tempered Cr-Mo alloy steel in which the prior austenite grain size was varied from 8–3 to 25-4 μm. The results in impact fatigue tests were compared to those under non-impact conditions. The crack growth rates associated with striation formation were insensitive to the change in prior austenite grain size, ductile-brittle transition temperature and test temperature regardless of impact and non-impact fatigue. When the material was in the brittle condition, impact fatigue gave rise to a transition from striation formation to intergranular and cleavage cracking. Such a transition will result in the acceleration of crack growth rate. The Paris Law exponent values in impact fatigue were reasonably expressed by the ratio of test temperature to ductile-brittle transition temperature.

Notizen: Abstract—The detection and measurement of surface microcracks in unnotched specimens are becoming more important, both from the point of view of description of crack growth by linear elastic fracture mechanics and from the classical endurance limit approach. Theoretical analyses of the current distribution in a cylindrical test specimen show promise that the a.c. potential drop method will become more sensitive for surface microcracks when higher current frequencies are applied. This effect was experimentally affirmed during fatigue tests on unnotched cylindrical specimens. With a 40 kHz current frequency semicircular surface microcracks with an area of 0.0066 mm2 (0.05% of the specimen cross-section) were detected. For accurate and reproducible crack growth measurements, a 5 kHz current frequency is preferable.

Notizen: Abstract—A fully age hardened Al-4%Cu-1%Mg alloy has been subjected to plain-fatigue and fretting-fatigue and the resulting fracture surfaces compared. Crack initiation in the plain-fatigue sample occurred at cracked inter-metallic inclusions and subsequent crack growth was at 90° to the surface. Crack initiation in the fretting-fatigue sample occurred at the edge of wear scar and subsequent crack growth was at 45° to the surface. Measurement of fatigue striation spacing on the fracture surfaces showed that, for the same applied stress, the initial crack propagation rate was an order of magnitude higher in the fretting-fatigue sample. This accelerated crack propagation rate was maintained until the crack reached a depth of 0.5–1.0 mm; thereafter the growth rate was the same as that in the plain-fatigue sample.

Notizen: Abstract—Ultrasonic bulk measurement technique was used to measure crack closure and a clip-on gage surface measurement technique was used to measure residual displacement at the crack tip of a propagating fatigue crack in 2219 and 7075 aluminum alloys. Experiments were carried out in vacuum, humid air, dry O2 gas, N2 gas, and deuteriated water vapor environments to evaluate effects of environments on residual strain and crack closure loads. It was observed that the closure load detected by ultrasonics decreased with introduction of humidity while the residual strain parameter dincreased with the humidity. The results are modeled as a build-up of oxide layer in addition to strengthening of asperities on the fracture surface. In the light of these observations, the effectiveness of surface and bulk measurements is evaluated. The results demonstrate that surface measurements are not always representative of the bulk behavior and use of such measurements in predictive analysis for fatigue can be misleading.

Notizen: Abstract— Optical and scanning electron microscopy have revealed the existence of grain boundary cavities in a series of specimens which had been cyclically deformed in the strain range ±0.25% with hold times ranging from 0 to 1000 min. The way in which these defects increase in size and number has been measured and found to correlate with the creep strain accumulated during the hold periods.A further observation is that a critical amount of deformation is required before either fatigue or creep type damage is nucleated. These observations lead to an alternative method to the currently accepted linear damage summation rule for estimating a lower bound of the creep-fatigue endurance.

Notizen: Abstract— The influence of age-hardening on the middle and low crack growth rates of a 7075 Al alloy is studied in vacuum. A transition in fracture surfaces morphology and crack growth curves is observed with the T 651 and T 7351 treatments in the near-threshold regime. Measurements of crack closure show its dependance on surfaces roughness and explain the lack of dependance of ΔKth with load ratio, except for the T 7351 alloy. An equation of crack growth rate to the fourth power of ΔKeff is in good agreement only with the crack propagation curves obtained for microstructure with an homogeneous deformation mode.

Notizen: Abstract— Fatigue crack growth measurements are usually made on standard specimens containing long cracks (∼10 mm) although in most practical situations, a large part of the fatigue life is spent with much shorter dimensions. The purpose of the present study is a comparison of crack growth behaviour for long cracks (∼13–16 mm) in CT specimens and smaller ones (∼0.3–0.5 mm) in four point bend specimens. Large effects are noticed indicating that, at a given stress intensity factor amplitude, the crack growth rate is significantly higher in specimens with short cracks. Mouth displacement measurements for both specimen configurations show that the crack closure phenomenon accounts for the observed effect. Crack closure is likely to be associated with fracture surface roughness as shown by partly machining the material left behind the crack tip in CT specimens.

Notizen: Abstract— The fatigue crack closure response was investigated for a surface crack in BS4360 50B structural steel, subjected to (1) constant amplitude loading and (2) constant amplitude loading interrupted by a single peak overload. A variety of compliance techniques was employed to determine closure behaviour. The crack mouth gauge measured the bulk, plane strain closure load, while the near tip strain gauge indicated the surface, plane stress closure response. For constant amplitude loading it was found that the surface regions of a surface crack are closed for a greater portion of the load cycle than the maximum depth point. A single peak overload caused different closure and growth rate transients at the surface of the thumbnail crack and at the maximum depth point. For growth rates above 10-6 mm/cycle, such behaviour agrees with the response of a through crack when subjected to constant amplitude loading, and a single peak overload.

Notizen: Abstract— Fatigue cracking of complex structure often involves several interacting cracks developing in a sequence of crack growth, arrest and reinitiation. A “combined” method of damage tolerance analysis is presented which employs fracture mechanics concepts to calculate crack growth and fatigue data from notched coupons with the appropriate notch radius for the crack initiation phase. The notched coupon data, plotted as peak elastic notch stress vs cycles to crack initiation, are shown to be applicable even when limited yielding occurs at the notch root. For several practical reasons it is recommended to select the initial crack size, ai, for the crack growth phase to be as large as possible, but in accord with two selection criteria. First, ai, must be within a notch-root region wherein the elastic stress distributions near a variety of notches are virtually identical. Secondly, ai must be small enough not to significantly influence the stress distributions for other cracks. The Combined Method is illustrated by means of an example involving fatigue crack growth along a widthwise row of holes in 305 mm wide test panels.

Notizen: Abstract—The application of dimensional analysis and similarity methods to the study of the speed of fatigue crack growth is considered. It is shown that the Paris range of the crack propagation diagram is an intermediate-asymptotic stage of the crack growth process. Over this stage the influence of the initial conditions on the process of fatigue crack growth has disappeared but the influence of the instability has not yet intruded. So-called incomplete self-similarity prevails at this stage with respect to a basic similarity parameter, equal to the ratio of the stress intensity factor amplitude to the fracture toughness. It is shown that for a certain material under fixed external loading conditions the exponent in the Paris power law is a universal function of the ratio of specimen thickness to the ultimate size of the cyclic plastic zone. Processing of available experimental data confirmed the results obtained by this approach.

Notizen: Abstract— Fracture surfaces of both service and laboratory fatigue fractures frequently show dark tongue-shaped marks. In fatigue tests on 7075–T6 specimens such tongues were produced by high peak loads. Measurements indicated that a tongue is not formed during a single burst of crack extension but is the result of a number of successive pop-ins requiring an increasing load. Therefore tongue formation is a quasi-stable phenomenon. The tunnelling fracture in the centre of plate thickness is accompanied by unfailed ligaments at the plate surfaces which reduce the stress intensity at the crack tip. The effect of different material conditions and loading direction on tongue forming was studied. A new model was developed to describe the growth of a tongue. The model was in good agreement with the various test results. The analysis of the problem has some relevance to validity requirements for K1c. A formula pertaining to tongues proposed by Forsyth was slightly modified and found to be approximately correct for the present results.

Notizen: Abstract— A theoretical development based on a simple physical model is proposed to help the designer predict high strain multi-axial fatigue behaviour. This approach hypothesises that the maximum shear strain γ*, on planes driving the crack through the thickness, controls the fatigue crack propagation rate and hence the life. The direct strain δ*n acting normal to the plane of γ* can exert a secondary modifying influence. Experimental results from several research laboratories have been analysed in this manner with some success.

Notizen: Abstract— Strain controlled continuous cycling fatigue tests are reported on three casts of Type 316 steel; the results obtained are shown to be consistent with published data.Strain controlled creep/fatigue tests are reported involving a hold period per cycle of between 0·2 and 168 h on one batch of Type 316 steel. An empirical extrapolation of the data and one involving a linear damage summation suggest that the existing Code Case N47 creep/fatigue design curve and rules are over-conservative. A stress relaxation/fatigue endurance correlation shows some promise for predictive purposes. Although many of the mechanical test and metallurgical features observed are consistent with a fundamental crack growth extrapolation approach, further consideration of detailed aspects are necessary before it can be used with confidence. It is concluded that there are no entirely reliable methods of extrapolation currently available for Type 316 steel and longer term tests are therefore essential to reduce the extrapolation uncertainties.

Notizen: Abstract— Fatigue crack propagation tests were carried out in different environments on 7075–T6 and 2024–T3 centre-cracked sheet specimens. Observations were made on the macroscopic transition from tensile mode to shear mode. The transition is suppressed by an aggressive environment, whereas it is promoted by an inert environment. As a consequence there is no unique correlation between the state of stress and the mode of cracking. Both the state of stress and the environment have a significant effect on the mode of cracking. A simple model for the effect of environment on fatigue crack growth is presented. The implications for crack growth under corrosion fatigue conditions are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract— Sharply notched specimens of a structural low-carbon steel were fatigued under several ratios of the maximum to minimum loads. The growth behavior of a short fatigue crack near the notch tip was analyzed based on crack closure measurements. A fatigue crack first decelerates with increasing crack length, and then accelerates or becomes non-propagating depending on the applied stress. A similar deceleration is seen when the rate is correlated to the stress intensity range. The effective stress intensity range is a unique parameter in correlating the growth rate of a short crack for all the stress levels examined, and the relation is identical to that obtained for a long crack. By considering the increase in crack closure with crack length, a quantitative method is proposed for predicting the non-propagating crack length and the fatigue limit of notched specimens as a function of the applied stress and the notch geometry.

Notizen: Abstract— Segmented fitting of fatigue crack growth rate data is shown to give a more accurate prediction of fatigue life with less statistical scatter than by a single fitting using the straight line of a Paris-type plot. Changes in the slope of the log (da/dN) vs log ΔK data are seen to correlate well with changes in the mode and mechanism of fracture.

Notizen: Abstract— Strains very near a growing fatigue crack have been computed from measured material displacements, both for a very dry environment and for humid air. Significant differences in crack tip strains arid crack tip opening displacements occur in these environments, with crack tip deformation in water vapor evidencing less plasticity than the dry environment. These quantitative results are incorporated into a previously developed mathematical model which is based, in part, on dynamic observations of intermittent crack growth. Fractography is shown to support the concepts of intermittent crack advance and decreased crack tip plasticity due to environmental water vapor.

Notizen: Abstract— A model for fatigue threshold has been proposed based on the dislocation subgrain cell structure that evolves at the crack tip in steels during the fatigue deformation process. The stabilized subgrain cells that develop in the material act as impenetrable barriers to dislocations in slip band pile-ups that emanate from the fatigue crack tip. The blocking of these dislocations tends to limit crack growth that occurs by crack tip emission of dislocations, thereby leading ultimately to the fatigue threshold condition. The grain size effect on threshold is deduced to be an indirect effect as it is proposed that the subgrain cell size is the controlling substructural parameter at the threshold stress intensity level. The subgrain cell size is shown to be proportional to the one-third power of the initial grain size.

Notizen: Abstract— The fatigue strength of notched specimens of a rotor steel was examined under variable torsional loading which simulates turbine-generator oscillations resulting from the high speed reclosing of transmission-line circuit breakers. The local stress-strain response at a notch root was analysed using Neuber's rule and the resulting complex strain sequences applied to smooth specimens. Using the rain flow analysis and the linear summation rule, fatigue lives of the smooth specimens were successfully predicted from constant amplitude fatigue life data in association with the cyclic stress-strain curve obtained by the incremental step method. Experimental crack initiation lives for notched specimens subjected to variable torsional loading were in excellent agreement with the theoretical curves derived from results on smooth specimens. According to the view that fatigue damage is equated to crack length, the propagation life of a mode II crack along the notch root was predicted to be actually coincident with the life to crack initiation at the notch root denned in this study, i.e. the life at the stage of finding a continuous circumferential crack.

Notizen: Abstract— Fatigue crack propagation behaviour in a cast Mg-Al-Zn alloy was examined. The fatigue crack growth rate of the alloy under constant amplitude loading and the threshold resulting from a number of tests are given. Delayed retardation after the application of a single tension overload is explored in detail and described by using the model proposed by Matsuoka and Tanaka. From these observations, it may be seen that the Matsuoka model can be applied to the cast magnesium alloy as well as steels and aluminium alloys. Changes in the extent of retadation and the overload affected zone size with respect to the ratio of peak-to-baseline stress intensity factor range are discussed. Two phenomena, delayed arrest and acceleration in the later stages of retardation are reported.

Notizen: Abstract— Fatigue crack growth in the intermediate range can be described by the Paris law of linear elastic fracture mechanics. However, if gross plastic deformation is involved, the crack growth rate is often underestimated by LEFM. In the present study the increased crack growth rate due to plastic deformation is determined by using the J–R curve. This model was found to give very good results over a wide range of high crack growth rates for three different geometries of two different steels. A way to predict instability under controlled cyclic load is discussed and is proved to work well in practice. Instability under displacement control is also discussed.

Notizen: Abstract— On the basis of fatigue data derived from a large number of experiments, the load progression methods of Locati and Prot as well as a method operating on a thermometric basis have been comparatively evaluated in an experimental and analytical (statistical) study. The last-named thermo-method can provide useful estimates for a fatigue limit corresponding with ca. 0 to 5% probability of fracture with only 1 to 3 experiments. The Prot-method, set up and evaluated in a certain way, provides a useful estimate of the fatigue limit and, additionally, an approximate indication of the width of the transition range of the corresponding Wöhler-type tests after experiments on not less than about ten specimens. The load progression, contrary to the original Prot-concept, must not necessarily be applied in a continuous mode, but can occur stepwise with increments Δσ smaller than ca. 15 Nm-2.

Notizen: Abstract— Linear-elastic fracture mechanics techniques were used to characterize the effect of temperature on the fatigue-crack propagation behaviour of precipitation heat-treated. Inconel X-750 in an air environment over the temperature range 24 to 649°C. In general, crack growth rates were found to increase with increasing temperature, particularly at the highest test temperature (649°C). The effect of stress ratio on the fatigue-crack growth behaviour of Inconel X-750 was examined at 538°C, and results indicated that the elevated temperature fatigue response of this nickel-base superalloy was relatively insensitive to stress ratio level at the growth rate levels studied. Metallographic and electron fractographic examination of Inconel X-750 fatigue fracture surfaces revealed operative crack growth mechanisms to be a function of temperature and prevailing stress intensity factor. Under room temperature and intermediate temperature conditions (up to 538°C), all fatigue fracture surfaces exhibited a faceted crystallographic morphology at low crack growth rates followed by striations in the higher growth rate regime. At the highest test temperature (649°C), the fatigue crack was found to propagate by an intergranular mechanism.

Notizen: Abstract— In this paper the strain distribution and the plastic zone size at a fatigue crack tip are discussed. From this analysis and considering the critical condition for plastic-blunting, a simple analytical formula for calculating the threshold stress intensity range for fatigue crack propagation at R= 0 is proposed. It is found that calculated values are in good agreement with existing experimental results.

Notizen: Abstract— The plastic work to propagate a fatigue crack by a unit area, U, measured by the foil strain gage technique requires an extrapolation to estimate the contribution closer than 100 μm to the crack tip. This is due to the size of the strain-gages used, 200 × 210 μm. Conversely, the electron channeling technique for determining U is useful mainly close to the crack tip where subgrains form. In the present work U was measured by both techniques in the same low carbon steel at ΔK= 8 MN/m3/2. The contribution to U from closer than 100 μm of the crack tip was determined to be 1·7 × 106 J/m2 using electron channeling and 2·0 × 106 J/m2 by extrapolation. The measured contribution to U from further than 100 μm from the crack tip was 3·6 × 106 J/m2 giving 5·3 × 106 J/m2 for U. Thus, a large amount of energy is absorbed outside the region where sub-grains form. The non-hysteretic plastic work was found to be about four orders of magnitude smaller than the hysteretic plastic work, and may be neglected. A map of the plastic zone results from the strain-gage measurement. Rice's theory predicts the measured plastic zone sizeif the proper material's strength is employed in the formula.

Notizen: Abstract— A method of combining long term creep data with relatively short term mechanical behaviour to provide an estimate of creep-fatigue endurance is presented. It is proposed that the creep-fatigue effect in high temperature cyclic deformation is governed by a difference in strain rate around the cycle and the associated variation in ductility with strain rate.

Notizen: Abstract— This paper deals with the effect of accumulated (oriented) plastic deformation (cyclic creep) on the life of metals under conditions of cyclic loading typically in the range of low-cycle fatigue. Specific features of cyclic creep of aluminium, titanium alloys and structural steels were investigated for the lives ranging from 05 to 2 × 105 cycles to rupture as well as specific features of transition from quasistatic to fatigue fracture associated with the variation in the mode of deformation of metals. It is shown that under conditions of repeated stress-controlled loading in a wide range of low temperatures, the cyclic creep processes are the predominant ones determining life of metals over a wide range of cycles, and when calculating life under these conditions it is necessary to take into account the rate of these processes irrespective of the type of fracture: quasistatic or fatigue. An equation was obtained for calculating life under low-cycle loading conditions which takes into account the interrelationship between the life, the accumulated plastic strain, steady-state cyclic creep rate and the resistance of the material to cyclic creep.

Notizen: Abstract— Stress gradients at the root of a notch are significant for the notch effect and the size effect of fatigue properties. Usually the gradient of the stress distribution in the minimum section is considered. In the present paper the variation of the tensile stress along the edge of the notch is considered. Calculations are made for a variety of notches. The results indicate a remarkable conformity of stress distributions at the notch root if the same peak stress and notch root radius (ρ) apply. Consequently K1and ρare highly characteristic for the stress distribution around the notch. Along the edge of the notch the stress decreases at a much slower rate than in the minimum section going away from the material surface. For the stress along the edge of the notch a stress gradient coefficient is defined. The variation of this coefficient is fairly small for several notches and K1, values. A 5% lower stress as compared to the peak stress at the notch root is obtained at about 0.02 ρbelow the material surface and at a distance of about 0.18 ρalong the material surface.

Notizen: Abstract— –The rate of propagation of macrofatigue cracks down to near threshold was measured in air in three tempered martensitic steels; HY80, HY130 and 4140 (650°C temper). The value of ΔKth was determined by the load-shedding technique in center notched panel specimens. Of the three steels, 4140 tempered at 650°C had the lowest ΔKth, 3–5 MN/m3/2, while HY80 had the highest, 4.2 MN/m3/2. The 4140 (650°C temper) is intermediate in strength between HY80 and HY130. The results are discussed in terms of a recent theory of one of the authors. The fatigue crack propagation rates in the mid-ΔKrange in HY80 and HY130 in argon were also studied by measuring, with foil strain gages, the cyclic plastic work to propagate a fatigue crack by a unit area, U.HY80 has a lower crack propagation rate and correspondingly higher U.This was attributed in part to the higher yield strength of HY130 but the dislocation structure and carbide composition and morphology also play roles. Microstructural changes due to cyclic plastic deformation inside the plastic zone in HY80 and HY130 were observed by TEM of thin foils. SEM studies of the fracture surfaces at ΔK= 20 MN/m3/2 indicate a more ductile fracture mode for HY80 than for HY130. The fatigue crack propagation rate of HY130 is substantially higher in laboratory air (47% relative humidity) than in dry argon. This is not the case for HY80.

Notizen: Abstract— The threshold value for fatigue crack growth of a medium carbon steel was increased when the test-environment was changed from air to an aggressive H2S-containing brine. This increase in fatique threshold was shown to be caused by corrosion product-induced crack closure. Further, the fatigue threshold and crack closure level were shown to be dependent on the growth rate history in approaching threshold. The differences in fatigue crack growth rate and fatigue threshold resulting from test procedure and growth rate history were significantly reduced by employing the effective stress intensity concept.

Notizen: Abstract— Four particularly pronounced beachmarks have been identified on the fracture surface of a cracked rotor. A correlation has been made between these beachmarks and events in the operational record. Fatigue crack growth calculations have been performed for a chordally cracked shaft subject to alternating self-weight bend stresses. The shaft dimensions and loading used correspond to the position of the crack in the rotor and growth rates were calculated over a range of crack depths spanning the positions of the major beachmarks. The results of the calculations agree with the beachmark correlation if allowance is made for the effect of the torsional loading of the shaft.

Notizen: Abstract— Crack closure in the near-crack-tip region has been considered to be an important contribution to the development of a crack-growth threshold for macroscopic cracks. Recent analytical work, however, has suggested that closure well back of the tip may be the controlling factor. In order to check on this possibility, material has been machined away far behind the crack tip in order to eliminate long-range closure. Removal of this material did not eliminate the threshold, but did lower the threshold level by approx. 10% for tests conducted on 6.3 mm-thick X7090-T6 powder metallurgy aluminum alloy.

Notizen: Abstract— Experimental studies aimed at understanding the fatigue process in metals and polymers have usually been performed under uniaxial stress. Only in the last two decades or so has much experimentation been carried out on fatigue crack propagation under biaxial stress. This paper reviews the available published data. Crack propagation behaviour under biaxial stress is dictated by 3 parameters: stress biaxiality itself, which is defined here as the ratio of the in-plane principal stresses, crack angle with respect to the applied principal stress directions and stress intensity factor range. Depending on the first two parameters, cracks may grow in Mode I, Mode II or Mixed-Mode. Crack growth data have been presented using these three divisions. Two short sections have been included on initiation and cyclic stress/strain behaviour under biaxial stress to emphasise the fact that crack growth cannot be fully understood without knowing something of them. The accumulated data do not lead to adequate conclusions on either the qualitative or quantitative behaviour of cracks subject to cyclic in-plane biaxial stress. Reasons for the confusion and even contradiction of independent results are put forward and some discussion given to the possible directions of future experimental work.

Notizen: Abstract— Evidence is presented that the cyclic stress intensity threshold for fatigue crack growth in A1 2219-T851 is associated with a critical maximum value of stress intensity, Kc. This relationship is discovered by measuring the local value of stress intensity at the crack tip which is less than the applied stress intensity because of fatigue induced compressive residual stresses in the plastic zone. Crack growth rates and values of the crack tip residual stress are measured as functions of load ratio. For local stress intensities greater than Kc, the growth rate follows a power-law relationship, increasing monotonically with δK. For local stress intensities below Kc, growth rates are also sensitive to the cyclic stress range, δσ. If the stress range is small, a threshold to growth, typical of long cracks, is seen. When the cracks are short and δσ exceeds a critical value, growth rates are a complex function of both δσ and δK. This behavior is attributed to the effect of δσ on the propagation of the crack front past obstacles such as grain boundaries.

Notizen: Abstract— Crack growth under cyclic loading has been studied by the finite element method. The calculation was made for plane stress conditions. The crack tip zone was modelled as a cohesive zone. The displacement of the free crack surface during unloading was found to be governed by the surrounding continuum and was independent of the details in the fracture zone. This means that crack closure upon unloading is directly related to the ultimate separation, of the cohesive zone, which in turn controls the residual plastic deformation left in the wake of the growing crack. If the distance over which closure takes place is rather small, closure may be very difficult to detect by the compliance technique.

Notizen: Abstract— Fatigue data required for estimates of cracked component lifetimes are conventionally obtained by cyclic loading of specimens manufactured to a specific geometry. Crack growth in the specimen results in an increase in the stress intensity factor range and crack growth curves are calculated from the variation of crack length with time. An environmental fatigue study of the effect of high pressure hydrogen on the low cycle fatigue of a medium strength steel has shown that, due to effects of elapsed time in the environment and effects of specimen size, in certain circumstances this procedure may not yield geometry-independent results which can be applied with confidence to cracked components. It is concluded that to obtain useful crack growth data in cases where fracture is influenced by diffusion or other strongly time dependent processes might require a modified approach to fracture mechanics testing procedures.

Notizen: Abstract— This study is concerned with the influence of a single-peak overload and the overload ratio on the subsequent rate of growth of a fatigue crack in steels. Retardation increases with increasing overload ratio. The crack opening load was also measured during all tests. It is shown that the Elber's crack closure concept is not able to explain the effect of overloads. The importance of the material yield stress was evaluated by testing steels of different strength. It seems that the residual stress state induced by the overload is the major factor causing retardation. Two models are analyzed.

Notizen: Abstract— The fatigue growth of short cracks in coarse grained IMI 685, having an aligned a microstructure, has been monitored using a two stage replication technique. Crack growth rates are presented in terms of the failure mechanism and compared with standard data obtained from through cracked, compact tension specimens. The maximum difference, of up to four orders of magnitude, between long and short crack growth rates is associated with separation along specific crystallographic planes resulting in a cleavage-like fracture appearance. The rate of short crack growth is also shown to be dependent on applied stress and a dwell at maximum load during the fatigue cycle.

Notizen: Abstract— Computer optimization techniques were applied to the strain range partitioning method for lifetime prediction under high temperature low cycle fatigue loading. The experimental data were evaluated using a simultaneous parameter fit determination of the baseline coefficients. This approach gave good predictions whereas a more conventional method did not work. The significance of the linear damage rule and the interaction damage rule is discussed on the basis of a generalised rule containing both as special cases. This formalism was applied to a ferritic steel and a cast nickelbase-super-alloy. In both cases a very good agreement between calculated and measured lifetimes was found.

Notizen: Abstract— An anisotropic form of the Von Mises yield criteria is presented which includes linear terms and therefore enables Bauschinger effects to be considered when constructing yield or loading surfaces. The coefficients representing the state of anisotropy are expressed in terms of the uni-axial and shear yield stress of the material. It is suggested that this form of the yield or loading surface can be used to determine the plastic strains for a range of multi-axial and cyclic plasticity problems and results are presented for the particular case of a tube subjected to cyclic plastic torsion with an axial stress.

Plastic zone size is found to correlate with the work done in creating a unit of new crack surface and the yield stress, rather than with the stress intensity factor and yield stress. Plastic strain distribution is found to be a logarithmic function of distance from the crack tip, in agreement with the mathematical analysis for a moving crack in plane strain.

Notizen: Abstract— –The da/dNvsΔKrelation for Torbar Steel is obtained by testing specimens cut from 32 mm bar. This relation is compared with available data for Unisteel 410 and with medium strength steels. Also, the pattern of fatigue cracking in Torbar is studied by inspecting bars retrieved from reinforced concrete beams which were subjected to repeated loading. It has been observed that fatigue crack locations in the bars coincided with the locations of concrete cracks traversing the bars. Tension tests on the fatigue cracked bars show that the cracks considerably reduce the ductility of the bars.

Notizen: Abstract—Conventionally, fatigue growth rate data are correlated in terms of the range ΔKof the applied stress intensity factor. It is argued that a correlation involving both ΔKand the constant stress Tclose to the tip of the equivalent elastic crack should be adequate for moderate stress, biaxial fatigue data. Practical application of these ideas would involve the preparation of “T -term” compendia similar to those already available for K -calibrations. “T -term” data are presented for the case of an edge-cracked strip in tension.

Notizen: Abstract— This work is concerned with the determination of the fatigue threshold ΔKth for an aluminium alloy. No dependency of ΔKth with grain size was observed. Crack closure concepts were applied in order to explain the effect of mean stress and environment. The opening load Pop was determined by the compliance method. Results show no significant variation of Pop with environment (air or vacuum) but partially explain the influence of mean stress on crack growth rates. Fractographic analysis (SEM) of fracture surfaces and evolution of compliance diagrams suggest that a change of mechanism in crack propagation occurs when stage I changes to stage II growth.

Notizen: Abstract— High strain fatigue tests of Type 316 stainless steel have been carried out at room temperature and 600°C. Cold work reduces the life relative to the annealed condition when considered in terms of plastic strain per cycle but not when the total strain range is used. It also renders the material far more resistant to cyclically induced changes in strength than the annealed state in which the strength is more than doubled at 600°C. Strain ageing causes further instability and enhances the hardening and loss of ductility in the annealed material. Because of the large number of variables involved, comparison with other work is unable to identify the parameters most influential in determining endurance. It is argued that where a fatigue–creep interaction occurs, then cyclic hardening will promote a higher creep resistance in a sequential interaction and favour a fatigue dominated failure in a simultaneous interaction.

Notizen: Abstract— A test facility has been developed in which a thin walled tube can be subjected to fully reversed fatigue cycles for all biaxial stress or strain ratios. Twin loop servo-control allied to high resolution gauge length extensometry, load and pressure transducers permits stress or strain controlled testing. The rig is unique in that cyclic stress-strain hysteresis loops can be obtained for both axial and circumferential directions during a test. Results from a strain controlled series of low cycle fatigue tests on a ferritic 1Cr-Mo-V steel obeyed the Manson-Coffin relationship with the exponent being sensibly constant for all strain ratios. For a given maximum principal biaxial strain, the damaging effect increased as the strain ratio φ increased from –1 to +1. By comparing results from solid and hollow cylindrical specimens, geometry effects on fatigue life were revealed. Data on shakedown and cyclic softening under biaxial strain conditions were also obtained.

Notizen: Abstract— Cyclic deformation behaviour of medium carbon steel, armco iron and copper has been investigated. A model based on the energy absorbed for the fracture process at the crack tip, given in the form (Δw*p)y where Δw*p is the hysteresis energy at the crack front and the exponent y decides the energy spent for the fracture process, is proposed for the crack growth in low cycle fatigue. The value of the exponent y has been found to be around 0·26 to 0·28 for medium carbon steel and armco iron and around 0·52 for copper. These values of y give good prediction of the relations between the total fracture energy and the stress amplitude and the total fracture energy versus the fatigue life. The energy based approach has been extended to predict the cumulative damage in a single step stress variation. Good correlation has been obtained between the experimental data and the theoretical prediction.

Notizen: Abstract— The stress intensity factors at the tip of an edge crack in a round bar embedded in the tension zone of a concrete beam are found for several conditions of bond failure between the steel reinforcing bar and the concrete. A two-dimensional finite element technique is modified to represent the third dimension, the steel-concrete interface and debonding. The integrated form of the Paris crack growth law is used with the calculated stress intensity factors to compute the propagating fatigue lives for embedded bar and bar in air. The results indicate that embedded bars appear to have shorter fatigue propagation lives than bars in air if the crack initiators are less than 0.05 of the bar diameter, while for deeper crack initiators, the opposite is true. It has also been shown that the propagating fatigue life of the bar increases with the degree of bond.

Notizen: Abstract— Near threshold, mixed mode (I and II), fatigue crack growth occurs mainly by two mechanisms, coplanar (or shear) mode and branch (or tensile) mode. For a constant ratio of ΔKI/ΔKII the shear mode growth shows a self-arrest character and it would only start again when ΔKI and ΔKII are increased. Both shear crack growth and the early stages of tensile crack growth, are of a crystallographic nature; the fatigue crack proceeds along slip planes or grain boundaries. The appearance of the fracture surfaces suggest that the mechanism of crack extension is by developing slip band microcracks which join up to form a macrocrack. This process is thought to be assisted by the nature of the plastic deformation within the reversed plastic zone where high back stresses are set up by dislocation pile-ups against grain boundaries. The interaction of the crack tip stress field with that of the dislocation pile-ups leads to the formation of slip band microcracks and subsequent crack extension. The change from shear mode to tensile mode growth probably occurs when the maximum tensile stress and the microcrack density in the maximum tensile plane direction attain critical values.

Notizen: Abstract— This paper describes results of an experimental program conducted to determine the influence of deep side-grooves on fatigue crack retardation. The results indicate that side-grooves significantly reduce the delay in fatigue crack growth caused by single peak overloads. It is suggested that the decreased retardation is due to simulation of plane strain conditions in the “thin” test sections by the stress field at the root of the side-groove.

Notizen: Abstract— The growth of “large” and “small” cracks in 7075–T6 aluminum is characterized in moist air and dry nitrogen. It is found that in both environments, the small cracks grow faster than large ones, but unlike large cracks, which grow much faster in air than in nitrogen, the small cracks extend in each environment at about the same average rate. The absence of environmental effect is found to be only apparent, a change to an inherently slower mode of growth in air offsetting the crack-accelerating influence of moisture. Subsurface grain boundaries apparently retard microcrack growth in both environments. Possible rationales for the rapid growth of small cracks are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract— Fatigue thresholds and crack growth rates up to 10−4 mm cycle −1 have been measured in β processed IMI 685. The results obtained in laboratory air for material having an aligned α microstructure and a random basketweave microstructure displayed a pronounced load ratio dependence which increased with decreasing ΔK. This sensitivity to mean load was also apparent from the threshold results determined in a vacuum of 5 ± 10−6 torr.Fractographic observations, compliance measurements, pd output and crack path replication have indicated that contacts can be made between the fracture faces at a number of points behind the crack tip during the load cycle. These contacts wedge the crack open, thus preventing the stress intensity from falling to the value associated with the minimum applied load. A critical stress intensity, Kop, has been determined which relates to the crack being fully “open” and the results are reanalysed and discussed in terms of an effective stress intensity range, ΔKeff.

Notizen: Abstract—An investigation into the applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics to very small fatigue cracks growing in a powder metallurgy nickel base superalloy is described. An unusual specimen was designed to facilitate the study of these small cracks. The stress intensity factor for the specimen was estimated and then calculated from the plastic zone size as determined by interferometry. The crack tip deformation field was also observed in the SEM and by stereoscopic viewing. These observations showed that the macroscopic deformation field was the same for both the long and short cracks, and was controlled by the stress intensity. The fatigue crack tip was found to interact strongly with the material microstructure and the localgrowth rate cannot be correlated with fracture mechanics quantities.

Notizen: Abstract—An analytical model to represent and predict the influence of frequency on the elevated temperature fatigue crack growth behavior of structural alloys is described. This model was formulated by considering the time dependence of stress and strain rate in the crack tip region due to creep deformation.Fatigue crack growth rate data were generated on ASTM grade A470 class 8 (CrMoV) steel at 538°C (1000°F) for several frequencies to evaluate the model. Based on these results and data taken from the literature on 304 stainless steel, it was concluded that the proposed model is capable of accurately representing and predicting the effect of frequency over several orders of magnitude on the fatigue crack growth rates at elevated temperature.

Notizen: Abstract— The residual stress fields at the tip of a fatigue crack have been evaluated using the Westergaard stress function. Using these values the loads at which the crack tip begins to open have been calculated to give U, Elber's effective stress range factor, as a function of stress ratio R, the ratio of applied stress range to yield stress, Δσ/σy, and the cyclic strain hardening exponent n. The computed values of U are shown to be in good agreement with measured values, and the predicted effect of prior high load cycles on the crack propagation rate at a lower cyclic load, on taking crack closure effects into account, is in excellent agreement with experimental results.
