    Notes: Abstract This study examines the hypothesis that the winter deep-dwelling and spring surface-dwelling female Neocalanus tonsus in waters off the east New Zealand coast are genetically distinct, reproductively isolated species. This is done by comparing sequences of two variable regions of DNA (16S and ITS) from winter and spring N. tonsus collected in 1996, using N. plumchrus (a northern hemisphere congener) as an outgroup. Analysis of sequence data, indicated clear genetic differences between N. tonsus and the outgroup N. plumchrus, with an average of 12% of the 16S sequence and 5.5% of the ITS sequence representing nucleotide substitutions between the two taxa. Low levels of intra-specific genetic differentiation were recorded (〈1% nucleotide differences among individuals); however there were no sequence differences between the N. tonsus females caught in deep water in August (winter) and in shallow water in October (spring). The morphology of these two types of females did not reveal any obvious differences. It is therefore likely that the two types do not represent different species but are ecological variants of a single species. The implications of N. tonsus being able to fuel reproduction in two different ways are discussed.

    Notes: Stress intensity factors were calculated, based on Bueckner's principle for cracks in both infinite and finite plates with notches subjected to biaxial loading. Approximate Green's functions have been obtained by modifying two existing Green's functions, originally for unnotched plates. Values of stress intensity factors calculated using Bueckner's principle with the approximate Green's functions are in good agreement with published stress intensity factors for cracks in both infinite and finite plates containing a circular notch or an elliptical notch, previously found by the method of boundary collocation.

    Notes: Crack initiation and early growth of fatigue cracks in a fully annealed 0.4% carbon steel was investigated using plastic replicas and torsion loading.In a structure consisting of a 70/30 mixture of pearlite and ferrite the cracks are seen to develop and grow initially along slip bands in the ferrite phase. Energetic considerations lead to the formulation of a model which, while characterizing short crack growth rate, also considers those microstructural variables relevant to fatigue crack initiation and early crack growth. The driving force for crack growth is provided by the energy of the slip band; correspondingly crack growth per cycle is proportional to the strength of the slip band.In the short fatigue crack region, cracks grow initially at a fast rate but deceleration occurs quickly and, depending on the stress level, they either arrest or are temporarily halted at a critical length. This critical length is shown to coincide with the value of the threshold length for crack growth under LEFM conditions.

    Notes: The initiation stage and short crack behaviour in torsional fatigue of a 0.4% C steel was investigated by a replication technique.The fatigue cracks initiated and propagated in the ferrite phase which is located at the prior austenite grain boundaries in the form of long allotriomorphs. At this stage of crack development it is proposed that crack growth rate depends on the extent and intensity of plasticity at the tip of the crack. Crack growth per cycle is correspondingly proportional to the strength of the slip band. The ferrite-pearlite boundaries are strong barriers to crack propagation, which is manifested by a deceleration of growth and possible arrest. On raising the stress level the previously non-propagating cracks may continue to grow by branching or joining with other cracks in the ferrite phase. This process is repeated until the stress fields of one or more dominant cracks attain a critical value to sustain continued growth that leads to failure.

    Notes: Abstract— The problem associated with short crack growth, defined as situations in which the intensity of the crack tip field is underestimated by linear elastic fracture mechanics analyses, is briefly reviewed.Two cases are identified, cracks growing in plastically strained materials, such as occurs in high strain fatigue studies and at notch roots, and small cracks growing in single grains as occurs close to the fatigue limit in plain specimens.Important mechanical and metallurgical features of short cracks are discussed with particular reference to the upper and lower bound definition of a short crack.
