Notes: A two-dimensional high-bypass ratio turbofan performance model was developed in order to predict accurately gas turbine transient performance. In the present model, the fan of high bypass engines has strong radial profiles of all thermodynamic variables. It is common to average these profiles so that the fan can be represented by one or two one-dimensional characteristics. The present paper describes how the radial profiles can be used to make an estimation of turbofan transient performance. The results are somewhat different to those produced using two one-dimensional compressor performance maps.

Notes: Abstract— The effect of stress state on the time and strain to failure has been considered in terms of currently accepted models of cavity growth. It is shown that the increasing contributions of compressive stress cause changes in cavity growth mechanisms which lead to increases in ductility. A tensile component of stress is necessary to provide the driving force for cavity growth by diffusion of vacancies and hence only strains in the presence of a tensile stress can lead to creep-dominated failure in creep-fatigue.Equivalent stress functions for isochronous stress rupture have been derived in terms of the cavity growth models and their corresponding relationships for calculating damage in terms of strain fractions developed. It is shown that it is difficult to discriminate between the various models on the basis of available experimental data. However, the analysis allows data to be assessed within the framework of physically based mechanisms and suggests methods which lead to conservative lower bound estimates of endurance. It is concluded that the shape of the isochronous creep rupture locus depends on the controlling process of cavity growth and that a detailed analysis of uniaxial creep ductility is necessary to obtain a complete description of the multiaxial behaviour. In many instances such an analysis will prove more valuable than simply performing creep tests over a limited range of stress states. Increasing contribution of principal stress to the failure process leads to a greater value for the equivalent stress in the presence of a compressive component compared with the von Mises equivalent value. However, the equivalent stress is reduced in the tensile quadrant of bi-axial stress. Hence the degree of conservatism arising from using the von Mises equivalent stress will vary with stress and may become slightly non-conservative. The relationship between equivalent stress functions for application in a time fraction assessment of creep and the calculation of creep damage by a strain fraction method has been demonstrated. Finally, guidance is given on how a limited data base of uniaxial rupture properties can be used to obtain a conservative estimate of behaviour under multiaxial loading.

Notes: Abstract— A method of combining long term creep data with relatively short term mechanical behaviour to provide an estimate of creep-fatigue endurance is presented. It is proposed that the creep-fatigue effect in high temperature cyclic deformation is governed by a difference in strain rate around the cycle and the associated variation in ductility with strain rate.

Notes: Abstract— This paper comprises the text of a code of testing practice prepared under the auspices of a British High Temperature Mechanical Testing Committee. The code makes recommendations concerning equipment, test specimens and procedures; it includes several explanatory and cautionary notes and references to related standards and publications. It was considered that the American National Standard ASTM E606–80 [1] contained much of the required material and in order to avoid unnecessary divergence of practice the recommendations therein have been used as far as possible but with specific modifications and additions to account for current UK needs and practice. It is anticipated that this document may form the basis of a future BSI publication and consequently, the general format is similar to that recommended by BSI in BS O 1981 [2]. Currently a programme of intercomparative Low Cycle Fatigue testing is being carried out under the auspices of and with support from the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) of the Commission of European Communities. This programme will shortly be widened to include non-European countries as part of a broader initiative in the field of Materials and Standards (VAMAS). In consequence it is intended to consider and, if necessary, revise the Code of Practice in the light of results from this programme and of other on-going work in the field.

Notes: Abstract A previous model of duplex scale growth on 18/8 stainless steels based on the formation of an impervious barrier at hemispherical alloy grain boundaries has been extended to consider the influence of a finite healing layer growth rate. The analysis shows that true primary and secondary or healing layer parabolic rate constants can best be calculated from weight gain vs. the square root of time plots. Accurate determinations of the secondary rate constant requires oxidation exposures a factor of 3 or 4 times greater than the time to form a complete healing layer at the oxide-metal grain boundary interface. Good agreement is found between the present theory and expeimental data and the model gives a simple extrapolation method for the evaluation of long-term metal losses or oxide thicknesses.

Notes: Abstract The depletion of an alloy by the selective removal of one element is considered when various rate laws apply. Duhamel's technique has been employed to obtain analytical solutions for the change in alloy composition with time. The effect of the depletion of the matrix by selective oxidation on the subsequent oxidation behavior of the alloy is discussed in terms of operating temperature of the alloy.
