Description / Table of Contents: The book "Radiation in cloudy atmosphere" is devoted to description of the radiative peculiarities of the cloudy atmosphere which depends on the large-scale and microphysical properties of clouds. The data of micro- and macrophysical and optical characteristics of clouds are widely presented. The various methods for calculations of shortwave and longwave radiative fluxes in cloudy and clear atmosphere are described. There are shown some regularities of variations of albedo, absorbability and heat fluxes of clouds and cloudy atmosphere in dependence on their properties. The empirical radiation models of atmosphere in dependence on their properties. The empirical radiation models of atmosphere are presented. The results of measurements and calculations are compared. The book may be of interest for specialists in atmospheric physics, oceanology and some adjacent sciences. It has a reference character and so may be useful to scientists who take interest in radiation and cloudiness structure of the atmosphere. It may be used also by students, post-graduate students and lectureres of corresponding specialities.

Description / Table of Contents: Finally, the generalized model is scrutinized in terms of its normal, adjoint, optimal and singular modes. It is found that the modes of the empirically modified model are more stable than the ones of the barotropic model. Also the modified barotropic optimal modes are more difficult to excite than their barotropic counterparts. These results are in accordance with previous studies that found that barotropic dynamics may not quantitatively describe LFV. The singular modes of the modified operator have very similar patterns but explain less variance than the barotropic ones. This is consistent with the difficulty in detecting optimal patterns in observations. Finally, we find that the modified barotropic operator is more normal than the classic barotropic one, and thus less variable.

Description / Table of Contents: To understand the global oceanic carbon budget and related climate change, exact measurements of organic carbon flux in all oceans environments, especially the continental margins, are crucial. In fact, data have been available for some time on organic carbon sources, pathways, and burial for most of the world's oceans, with the notable exception of the Arctic. With this book, the editors remedy this gap in knowledge, presenting an overview of organic-carbon sources, pathways, and burial of the circum-Arctic continental margin and deep-sea areas. Data from each Arctic shelf and basin are collates, presented in common and parallel formats, and related to the global carbon cycle. The book is suitable for lecturers, graduate students as well as scientists interested in the organic-carbon-cycle and Arctic Ocean (paleo-)environment.

Description / Table of Contents: This monograph presents a comprehensive synthesis of our current state of knowledge concerning the climate of the Arctic, using the latest meteorological data. All meteorological elements are described in detail for the first time and an up-to-date review of the available literature for each element is given. Climatic regions are distinguished and described. The monograph also provides an account of the present state of research on climate change and variability in the Arctic for three time scales: the Holocene, the last Millennium, and the 20th century. The book concludes with a presentation of the scenarios of the Arctic climate in the 21st century. This monograph is intended for all those with a general interest in the fields of meteorology, climatology, and with a knowledge of the application of statistics in these areas.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: Marine biota show latitudinal gradients in distribution, composition and diversity. Most studies of latitudinal gradients in organism biology and ecology are based on between-species comparisons and hence are hampered by taxon-related variability in the parameters under investigation. To reduce taxonomic noise and to minimize the risk of otherwise misleading generalisations I used species from one single bivalve family (Pectinidae, scallops.Ecological (e.g. age, growth, productivity) and physiological (standard metabolic rate, enzyme kinetics) parameters of three scallop species (Adamussium colbecki, Aequipecten opercularis and Zygochlamys patagonica) were measured and combined with data extracted from literature. The resulting database comprised 226 studies of 26 species living over a temperature range of 28°C. The overall growth performance of scallops increases with decreasing latitude, i.e. it is strongly coupled to annual solar energy input but weakly coupled to average annual water temperature. Mean annual water temperatures and annual solar energy input by themselves can explain only a small part of the variability observed in growth performance. An analysis of 82 published studies on standard metabolism provided no evidence for metabolic cold adaptation at the organism level. In contrast, mitochondrial proliferation caused a rise in oxygen demand in the Antarctic scallop indicating that metabolic cold adaptation does occur on the cellular level. It must be assumed that energy savings occur to counterbalance the cost of cellular MCA. At which organisational level such savings may occur remains unanswered so far.The present study indicates that many scallop species have developed strong life-history adaptations to the particular conditions of both alimentation and temperature they experience. In addition, the established pectinid database (ScallopBASE) provides a good basis for the evaluation of evolutionary adaptations and constraints.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: The book of the historian-journalist S.F. Vinogradov is dedicated to the famous Soviet polar explorer G.A.Ushakov. The creation of the first settlement on Wrangel Island and a three-year winter stay there would have been enough for Ushakov's name to remain forever in the history of Arctic exploration. But he was also the organizer of the Severozemelskaya expedition, which in a short time in the most difficult conditions explored and mapped the vast archipelago - Severnaya Zemlya. Ushakov participated in the rescue of the Chelyuskinites and in the first high-latitude expedition on the icebreaker 'Sadko'. He also did a lot to turn the Northern Sea Route into a functioning waterway. The book is intended for the general reader.

Description / Table of Contents: Iwan Papnin.

Description / Table of Contents: This book descibes numerical methods for partial differential equations (PDEs) coupling advection, diffusion and reaction terms, encompassing methods for hyperbolic, parabolic and stiff and nonstiff ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The emphasis lies on time-dependent transport-chemistry problems, describing e.g. the evolution of concentrations in environmental and biological applications. Along with the common topics of stability and convergence, much attention is paid on how to prevent spurious, negative concentrations and oscillations, both in space and time. Many of the theoretical aspects are illustrated by numerical experiments on models from biology, chemistry and physics. A unified approach is followed by emphasizing the method of lines or semi-discretization. In this regard this book differs substantially from more specialized textbooks which deal exclusively with either PDEs or ODEs. This book treats integration methods suitable for both classes of problems and thus is of interest to PDE researchers unfamiliar with advanced numerical ODE methods, as well as to ODE researchers unaware of the vast amount of interesting results on numerical PDEs.
