    Description: Groundwater is a vital resource for humans, non-human species, and ecosystems. It has allowed the development of human evolution and civilizations throughout history (e.g., Wittfogel 1956, Tempelhoff et al. 2009, Cuthbert and Ashley 2014, Roberts 2014). However, it faces multiple potential threats that make it vulnerable and fragile. Climate change and human activities are the primary causes that have led to water cycle disruptions, particularly a decline in groundwater quality and quantity (e.g., Gleeson et al. 2020, Chaminé et al. 2022, Richardson et al. 2023). Climate variability has induced droughts, floods, and other extreme weather conditions, significantly impacting groundwater in many regions. Meanwhile, human activities such as over-abstraction, ground contamination, deforestation, land-use change, and other anthropogenic pressures have further compromised groundwater status. Nonetheless, groundwater continues to fulfill water demands in many regions or during specific periods. Therefore, concerted efforts are imperative to ensure its sustainability. So, conservation practices and nature-based solutions must be adopted to efficiently manage groundwater and shield it from additional potential hazards or risks (e.g., contamination, pollution, or over-abstraction). Failure to act quickly can result in the loss of this critical resource, with severe consequences for the economy, society, and ecosystems. From this perspective, it is imperative to prioritize actions underscored by technical-scientific integrity, environmental responsibility, societal sensitivity, and ethical practices.

    Description: La geoetica (Peppoloni et al. 2019; Peppoloni e Di Capua 2021a,b,c) è una disciplina all’intersezione tra geoscienze (o scienze della Terra), filosofia, economia e sociologia. La geoetica si è sviluppata inizialmente come ambito di riflessione e prassi intra-disciplinare delle geoscienze, focalizzandosi sul significato culturale, sul valore sociale e sulle implicazioni etiche della conoscenza e della pratica geoscientifica. La geoetica si è da subito interrogata sul ruolo che gli operatori delle geoscienze (i geoscienziati) svolgono nella società e quali sono i loro doveri etici quando producono conoscenza, quando comunicano il loro sapere alla popolazione e ai decisori politici, quando contribuiscono alla difesa dai rischi naturali e si adoperano per l’uso prudente delle risorse minerarie ed energetiche del pianeta. Le discussioni intra-disciplinari si sono quindi concentrate inizialmente sulle questioni deontologiche, su come svolgere al meglio le proprie attività di studio e ricerca nel rispetto del metodo scientifico, su come interagire con colleghi e committenti per assicurare alti standard scientifici e tecnologici, su come rendere la comunità scientifica e professionale più inclusiva e rispettosa verso i suoi membri (Peppoloni e Di Capua 2012, 2020a, 2021a; Lollino et al. 2014; Wyss and Peppoloni 2015; Gundersen 2017; Mogk e Bruckner 2020). Tuttavia, è apparso subito evidente che le riflessioni all’interno delle geoscienze fossero solo una prima forma di approccio a questioni non strettamente tecniche della ricerca e della professione geoscientifica. Le analisi e le riflessioni della geoetica hanno cominciato a guardare fuori dell’ambito intra-disciplinare per addentrarsi all’interno di problemi più complessi che riguardano l’intera società, la sua organizzazione e i suoi riferimenti etici (Bohle e Preiser 2019; Peppoloni et al. 2017, 2019; Peppoloni e Di Capua 2020a,b; 2021a,b,c,d; Peppoloni 2020; Bohle e Marone 2021; Di Capua et al. 2021).

    Description: The “Giornata ONT 2023” arises from the will to let know within INGV how many activities do people from the Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti (ONT), and how strong is their contribution to the INGV missions: Research, Services, Education, Communication. In the nearly seven years of the current management the ONT has experienced a continuous evolutionary, sometimes complex, path. But it is always a straight path to pursue the objective of a continuous growth of the ONT. During these years the ONT has changed its name (from Centro Nazionale Terremoti – CNT, to ONT); it has experienced the coming out of some employees that moved to create the Irpinia new Section; it has lived the novelty of incoming people (example from the Centro Allerta Tsunami). It has also faced the need to overcome the limitations due to the worldwide pandemic emergency COVID19, either for the h24 services or for the research activities. Therefore in 2020 and 2021 we have only remotely attended the ONT days. The drive to be “in presenza” comes from this latter issue. We strongly want to meet, to talk face to face, to “Welcome” the young colleagues who are the injection of new ideas and perspectives, that are the necessary fuel to evolve the knowledge. As a matter of fact it emerges from the DNA of the ONT, i.e. the inclusiveness and the multidisciplinarity. This latter is widely testified by the ONT activities that are shared among the three Departments and their strategic objectives. The agenda of the “Giornata ONT 2023” has specifically emphasized the variety of the technical and scientific contents, that for sake of simplicity have been collected in the following themes: • Infrastructures, Data­Sharing and Laboratories • Analysis, Modelling, Interpretation of Geophysical Phenomena • National and International Projects (Research Results and Products from Completed Projects; Ongoing Projects) • Society ­ Communication, Dissemination, Emergency Management • Seismic Surveillance And Tsunami Warning Overall, the contributions have been 100, most of which are posters (77) and the remaining (23) in different exhibit formats. The wide interest about the proposed contents and the positive feedback from the attendance, pushed the decision to collect and publish the contributions in a Miscellanea INGV, where the documents can be easily found. And we are finally ready to make the Miscellanea available to the reader. I would warmly thank the Authors for their enthusiastic acceptance to contribute, the Conveners of the “Giornata ONT 2023” Sessions for their availability to organise and manage the submitted poster/exhibits, the Editorial Board members for their hidden work that led to this Miscellanea. In conclusion, let me spend a few words about my personal journey as Director of the ONT. After 2504 days it has come to an end and the “Giornata ONT 2023” and the Miscellanea are, somehow, the cherry on top. It is really difficult to say “Thanks” one by one to the people who helped me along this complex and long path. So, please, let me simply say Grazie a tutti voi!     Description: Climate change affects human activities, including tourism across various sectors and time frames. The winter tourism industry, dependent on low temperatures, faces significant impacts. This paper reviews the implications of climate change on winter tourism, emphasising challenges for activities like skiing and snowboarding, which rely on consistent snowfall and low temperatures. As the climate changes, these once taken-for-granted conditions are no longer as commonplace. Through a comprehensive review supported by up-to-date satellite imagery, this paper presents evidence suggesting that the reliability of winter snow is decreasing, with findings revealing a progressive reduction in snow levels associated with temperature and precipitation changes in some regions. The analysis underscores the need for concerted efforts by stakeholders who must recognize the reality of diminishing snow availability and work towards understanding the specific changes in snow patterns. This should involve multi-risk and multi-instrument assessments, including ongoing satellite data monitoring to track snow cover changes. The practical implications for sports activities and the tourism industry reliant on snow involve addressing challenges by diversifying offerings. This includes developing alternative winter tourism activities less dependent on snow, such as winter hiking, nature walks, or cultural experiences.

Selected authors present their reflections, findings and insights regarding the vision of geoethics (ethics of responsibility towards the Earth) as global ethics from philosophical, humanities and social sciences perspectives. In addition, they discuss ethical frameworks from diverse cultural traditions, searching for points of intersection with geoethics. The goal: for global environmental problems to be managed via multi-perspective approaches that can more effectively accommodate complexity.     Description: The globalized society is held together by an intricate system of human relationships. This system constitutes a planetary architecture characterized by (a) a complex technological structure, (b) the homogenization of cultural forms and economic systems, (c) growing social, political and economic inequalities. Faced with planetary systemic perturbations (such as pandemics and wars), the globalized society shows criticalities, but also strengths, despite it is still too vulnerable to anthropogenic environmental changes. These changes modify the physical–chemical-biological characteristics of the Earth system and therefore represent a great threat to human communities, more serious than the pandemic threat from SARS-CoV-2, perhaps equal to the threat of a nuclear war, since it is the habitability of the planet by humanity and many other living species to be in danger. In order to promptly address the dangers of the anthropogenic changes underway, a closer and more structured international cooperation between states is needed. There are no alternatives. But this goal today appears increasingly difficult and distant due to the international geopolitical instability triggered by the war in Ukraine. In fact, only, human communities that share ethical principles and values on which to base new forms of relationship between human beings and the Earth system are able to face the planetary ecological crisis and build a possible future on Earth. In this perspective, geoethics is proposed as global ethics of a complex world, founded on the principles of dignity, freedom and responsibility and aimed at the renewal of the human-Earth System nexus and the realization of an ecological humanism.

    Description: Volatiles transported from the Earth’s interior to the surface through permeable faults provide insights on the gas composition of deep reservoirs, mixing and migration processes, and can also be applied as gas-geothermometer. Here, we present carbon (δ13C), hydrogen (δ2H) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic data of CO2, CH4, and N2 from gas samples collected from the Kızıldere and Tekke Hamam geothermal fields, located along the eastern segment of the Büyük Menderes Graben, Turkey. The stable isotopic composition of carbon (δ13C) ranges from +0.30 to +0.99‰ (PDB) for CO2 from Kızıldere and is slightly more variable (−0.95 to +1.3‰) in samples from Tekke Hamam. Carbon isotope data in combination with CO2/3He data reveal that ~97% (Tekke Hamam) to ~99% (Kızıldere) of CO2 derives from limestone sources, with the residual CO2 being magmatic in origin with no evidence for CO2 from organic sources. The slightly higher contribution of limestone- derived CO2 in Kızıldere, compared to Tekke Hamam can be attributed to the higher temperatures of the Kızıldere reservoir and resulting amplified fluid–limestone interaction, as well as helium depletion during phase separation for Kızıldere samples. In contrast to the carbon isotopic composition of CO2, the δ13C values of methane from Kızıldere and Tekke Hamam are clearly distinct and vary between −23.6 and −20.8‰ for Kızıldere and −34.4 and −31.7‰ for Tekke Hamam, respectively. The δ2H-CH4 composition is also distinct, measured as −126.7‰ for Kızıldere and −143.3‰ for Tekke Hamam. CO2-CH4 carbon isotope geothermometry calculations based on the isotopic fractionation of δ13C between the dominant component CO2 and the minor component CH4 reveals temperatures 20–40 °C and 100–160 °C higher than the bottom–hole temperatures measured for Tekke Hamam and Kızıldere, respectively. Based on the CO2-CH4 carbon isotope disequilibrium, unusual high methane concentrations of ~0.3 to 0.4 vol.-% and CH4/3He-δ13C-CH4 relationships we suggest thermal decomposition of late (Tekke Hamam) to over-mature (Kızıldere) organic matter and, to some extent, also abiogenic processes as principal source of methane. The N2/36Ar ratios of most samples reveal the existence of a non–atmospheric nitrogen component within the gas mixture issuing from both fields, in addition to a constant contribution of atmospheric derived nitrogen accompanied into the system via the meteoric recharge of the geothermal system. Based on the δ15N isotopic ratios (varying between −4.44‰ and 4.54‰), the non–atmospheric component seems to be a mixture of both sedimentary (crustal organic) and mantle nitrogen. The thick Pliocene sedimentary sequence covering the metamorphic basement is the likely major source for the thermogenic content of CH4 and crustal N2 gas content in the samples.

At present, scientists can predict, though with a certain degree of uncertainty, the onset and the evolution over time of most natural events. Scientific progress provides societies with advanced tools and methods to defend people, such as predictive models, monitoring instruments, early warning systems, and safe building standards. Nevertheless, the defence against natural risks should consider the ethical and social aspects involved in a risk scenario: this is fundamental to help the human community recover after a disaster and support science to identify possible solutions for an acceptable living with natural phenomena. Geoethics promotes the reflection on values that should guide human interaction with the territory and the associated and interlinked individual and collective responsibilities. Geoethics discusses issues and practices in natural risk management and fosters geoeducation and risk communication as a means to improve societal resilience.

    Description: After the pandemic period due to the spread of COVID-19, staff of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) with diversified skills and coming from different geographical areas has planned and organized the participation of the Institute in the XXXVI edition of the Futuro Remoto popular scientific event occurred in Naples from 22 to 27 November 2022, finally back in presence. Starting from the theme indicated by the organizers - called “Equilibrium” - the working group has developed a proposal entitled “Earth: in constant search for equilibrium”. The proposal has been articulated so as to start from the observation of the internal disequilibria that make the Earth a planet in continuous movement, up to the manifestations of the earth’s dynamics producing a significant impact on human life, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and climate changes. These themes have been illustrated with models, demonstrations with scientific instruments, interactive exhibits and videos. Thanks to the activities carried out, the visitors have been able to exchange their points of view with the INGV staff, developing reflections on the proposed topics. Very important for the successful interaction between the INGV personnel involved and the public was the climate of collaboration and harmony created thanks to proactive attitudes, professionalism and skills of the staff who have planned, organized and participated in the event.

The first lockdown occurred in Italy in the spring of 2020, drastically disrupting people’s daily schedules, work schedules, socialisation, and relationships with co-workers, family and friends. To overcome physical isolation, collect impressions and keep a record of the period, the “How are you?” online questionnaire has been designed as a potential conversation among friends during home confinement for all but essential reasons. What impact this situation had on people? The study investigates some of the social and relational consequences the first lockdown in Italy had on a group of professionals in terms of similarities and differences regarding changes and limitations on their work and daily routines, primarily focusing on the emotions felt at that time.

    Description: Communication is not only through words. Man has used any medium to memorize places and describe the area around him through cartography for over 4000 years. By means of new technologies we have passed from computer-drawn maps to georeferenced digital maps, up to georeferenced data shared via webgis. The Osservatorio Vesuviano is the Sezione di Napoli of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, a research institution whose main purpose is the monitoring of Campania volcanic areas by means of different types of networks (consisting of fixed and mobile stations), each of which records different parameters. The Osservatorio Vesuviano has built a constantly evolving GIS environment database to manage geographic data in order to remember and understand the distribution of these networks. This paper presents the open access database “moNitoring mAps of camPania voLcanoES” (NAPLES), which provides monitoring networks maps. You can access NAPLES database and download the maps you need both from Osservatorio Vesuviano website or from Zenodo open database.

    Description: In a volcanic crisis, authorized decision-makers must balance the social and economic costs of mitigating actions, such as evacuation, against the potential human losses if such actions are insufficient. In making their decisions, advice is needed from volcanologists on the eruption probability. Therefore, there should be a clear separation in the roles of volcanologists and decision-makers; the volcanologists should advise on the volcano hazard and alternative potential scenarios but refrain from involvement in making decisions. Currently, volcanologists are responsible for setting volcano alert levels. Given the small handful of distinct alert levels, there is inherent ambiguity and substantial uncertainty in the interpretation of individual levels. Furthermore, changing an alert level may automatically trigger actions by decision-makers. This would violate the principle of separation of responsibility and may result in unwelcome pressure being applied to volcanologists. Just as physicians can invoke medical ethics in resisting pressure to alter their advice, so volcanologists can invoke geoethics. Freedom to abide by their scientific beliefs is a basic tenet of geoethics.

    Description: Greece belongs to the most geodynamically active regions of the world and as such, it has to be considered an area of intense geogenic degassing. In terms of carbon, the territory is characterized by the high hydrothermal and volcanic activity of the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc (SAAVA), and by widespread geological seeps of buried carbon dioxide and methane. In the present work, we investigate the island of Gyali located in the volcanic system Kos-Gyali-Nisyros. Nine gas samples have been collected on the island of Gyali in areas found both on land, in a small lake (~2000 m2) along its beach, and in the sea close to the shore at shallow depths (〈20 m). Results show that CO2 is the prevailing gas species with concentrations above 833,000 μmol/mol, whilst minor enrichments in N2 are noticed in some of the samples. Helium isotope ratio suggests an up to 70% mantle origin (considering a MOR type source) with the contribution of the atmospheric component being negligible, whereas C presents a mixed mantle-limestone origin with organic sediment being unimportant. Such isotope values fall in the range that characterizes the Kos-Gyali-Nisyros Volcanic Field. First estimations on the CO2 release suggest an output in the range from 18 to 28 t/d for Gyali Island, which is much lower than the total output of Kos ~75 t/d and Nisyros ~100 t/d. However, such results highlight that Gyali is an active system and, despite its small size, its degassing is not trivial.

    Description: In academic institutions, there is frequently the need to provide new services, in a cloud model, to be used either in teaching or research activities. One of the main decisions to be addressed is related to the cloud model to adopt (private, public or hybrid), and what the mixing of functionalities to use for the hybrid one. In this paper two different methodologies (Cost/features and Semantic-based) are been experimented in order to identify the best suited cloud model to adopt for a specific problem. The long-term perspective is to build a methodology to serve as a tool to be used as decision support for the ICT manager in order to help him in this decision. The comparison between the two different methodologies show the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches.

    Description: The Cerro Blanco Caldera (CBC) is the youngest collapse caldera system in the Southern Central Andes (Southern Puna, Argentina). The CBC is subsiding with at an average velocity of 0.87 cm/year and hosts an active geothermal system. A geochemical characterization of emitted fluids was carried out based on the chemical and isotopic compositions of fumaroles, and thermal and cold springs discharged in this volcanic area with the aim of constructing the first hydrogeochemical conceptual model and preliminary estimate the geothermal potential. The main hydrothermal reservoir, likely hosted within the pre-caldera basement rocks, has a Na+-Clˉ(HCO3)ˉ composition with estimated temperatures ≥135 °C. The unconsolidated, fine-grained Cerro Blanco ignimbrite likely acts as the cap-rock of the hydrothermal system. The presence of phreatic eruption breccias in the surrounding area of the geothermal fumaroles supports the effectiveness of the pyroclastic deposit as sealing rocks. The isotopic data of water (δ18O and δD) indicate a meteoric recharge of the hydrothermal reservoir, suggesting as recharge areas the sectors surrounding the CBC, mainly towards the W and NW where large outcrops of the pre-caldera basement exist. A fault-controlled hydraulic connection between the hot springs and the hydrothermal reservoir is proposed for the Los Hornitos area. The fumaroles show the typical compositional features of hydrothermal fluids, being dominated by water vapor with significant concentrations of H2S, CH4 and H2. Considering the high geothermal gradient of this area (∼104 °C/km) and the relatively high fraction of mantle He (∼39%) calculated on the basis of the measured R/Ra values, the hydrothermal aquifer likely receives inputs of magmatic fluids from the degassing magma chamber. The preliminary geothermal potential at CBC was evaluated with the Volume Method, calculating up to E = 11.4*1018 J. Both the scarce presence of superficial thermal manifestations and the occurrence of an efficient cap-rock likely contribute to minimize the loss of thermal energy from the reservoir. The results here presented constitute the necessary base of knowledge for further accurate assessment of the geothermal potential and ultimately the implementation of the geothermal resource as a viable energy alternative for small localities or mining facilities isolated from the National Interconnected System due to their remote localization.
