Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Following the late Neoproterozoic - early Cambrian breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia, Gondwana evolved as one of the principal continental masses on Earth, embracing most of South America, Africa, Australasia, Antarctica, much of western Europe and parts of Asia. Around its margins were various other terranes that had varying tectonic and biogeographical affinities with the main continental block. This book incorporates a series of reviews and multidisciplinary research papers that together explore the tectonic, palaeogeographical and palaeobiogeographical evolution of the elements that made up the peri-Gondwanan collage. The stratigraphical scope of the coverage embraces the late Precambrian through early Devonian, providing a comprehensive overview of structural, stratigraphical and biological evolution through this significant interval of Earth history. Integration of these various processes throughout the volume will be of broad-based interest to a wide range of geoscientists.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Accretionary orogens form at convergent plate boundaries and include the supra-subduction zone forearc, magmatic arc and backarc components. They can be broken into retreating and advancing types, based on their kinematic framework and resulting geological character.Accretionary systems have been active throughout Earth history, extending back until at least 3.2 Ga, and provide an important constraint on the initiation of horizontal motion of lithospheric plates on Earth.Accretionary orogens have been responsible for major growth of the continental lithosphere, through the addition of juvenile magmatic products, but are also major sites of consumption and reworking of continental crust through time.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This book considers the geology between North and South America. It contributes to debate about the area's evolution, particularly that of the Caribbean. Prevailing understanding is that the Caribbean formed inthe Pacific and was engulfed between the Americas as the latter drifted west. Accordingly, the CaribbeanPlate comprises internal, Jurassic-Cretaceous oceanic rocks, thickened into a Cretaceous hotspot/plumeplateau, with obducted ophiolites and Cretaceous-Palaeogene, subduction-related, intra-oceanic volcanicarc and metamorphosed arc/continental rocks exposed on its margins. An alternative interpretation is thatthe Caribbean evolved in place. It consists largely of continental crust, extended in the Triassic-Jurassic,which subsided below thick Jurassic-Cretaceous carbonate rocks and flood basalts, and Cenozoic carbonateand clastic rocks. After uplift of 'oceanic' and volcanic arc rocks onto (continental) margins, the interiorfoundered in the Middle Eocene. Papers range from regional overviews and discussions of Caribbeanorigins to aspects of local geology arranged in a circum-Caribbean tour and ending in the interior. They address tectonics, structure, geochronology, seismicity, igneous and metamorphic petrology, metamorphism, geochemistry, stratigraphy and palaeontology.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Plate tectonics provide a unifying conceptual framework for the understanding of Phanerozoic orogens.More controversially, recent syntheses apply these principles as far back as the Early Archaean. Manyancient orogens are, however, poorly preserved and the processes responsible for them are not well understood. The effects of processes such as delamination, subduction of oceanic and aseismic ridges, overridingof plumes and subduction erosion are rarely identified in ancient orogens, although they have a profoundeffect on Cenozoic orogens. However, deeply eroded ancient orogens provide insights into the hiddenroots of modern orogens. Recent advances in analytical techniques, as well as in fields such as geodynamics, have provided fresh insights into ancient orogenic belts, so that realistic modern analogies can nowbe applied. This Special Publication offers up-to-date reviews and models for some of the most importantorogenic belts developed over the past 2.5 billion years of Earth history.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The Eastern Mediterranean region is a classic area for the study of tectonic processes and settings related to the development of the Tethyan orogenic belt. The present set of research and synthesis papers by Earth scientists from countries in this region and others provides an up-to-date, interdisciplinary overview of the tectonic development of the Eastern Mediterranean region from Precambrian to Recent. Key topics include continental rifting, ophiolite genesis and emplacement, continental collision, extensional tectonics, crustal exhumation and intra-plate deformation (e.g. active faulting). Alternative tectonic reconstructions of the Tethyan orogen are presented and discussed, with important implications for other regions of the world. The book will be an essential source of information and interpretation for academic researchers (geologists and geophysicists), advanced undergraduates and also for industry professionals, including those concerned with hydrocarbons, minerals and geological hazards (e.g. earthquakes).

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: An interdisciplinary collection of papers related to long-term landscape development, integrating landscape and tectonic processes. The presentations demonstrate that studies of present-day processes can be successfully placed within an evolutionary framework and geological setting, the necessity for which increases as appreciation of the antiquity of many landscapes grows. Coverage includes: British Isles, NW Europe, Mediterranean Basin, Middle East, Himalaya, Andes and Antarctica. The papers highlight the significance of recent advances in analytical technology for improving interpretation of both geologically ‘ancient’ and ‘young’ landscapes. It is hoped that, by demonstrating the benefits of interdisciplinary discourse, a widening of interest in landscape studies will be encouraged.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The evolution of oceanic plates is very well described by plate tectonic theory, but the study of continental tectonics is more complicated. Continental plates have a different rheology, a greater mean age, a higher heat productivity, and are more heterogeneous in composition. An understanding of continental tectonics requires, therefore, that these effects upon rigid plate behaviour be taken into account. This book brings together a series of papers which explore various aspects of the deformation of continental lithosphere, covering different tectonic settings from the Palaeozoic to the present day. These include the processes of terrane accretion and juxtaposition, the exhumation of high-pressure terrains, and mechanisms of crustal extension and rifting. The book will be of general interest to a broad audience of earth scientists concerned with global tectonics, continental growth processes, and the deformation of the continents during collision, exhumation and extension.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Faulting and fracturing play an important role in enhancing permeability, facilitating flow and controlling hydrothermal mineralization in rocks. This is the main theme of this volume and the papers included are intended to provide an overview of current ideas at the interfaces of structural geology, fluid flow and mineralization research. Included are speculative, but provocative ideas that should stimulate a re-examination of existing concepts regarding fluid flow in fractures systems and the formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits. Also highlighted are recent advances showing the significance of the development of fracture connectivity in focusing fluid flow. The collection concludes with a thermatic set of papaers presenting new research results on the genesis of the world-famous Carboniferous base metal deposits of Ireland. The volume is intended for geoscientists studying the floe of fluids through fault, vien and fracture systems or the genesis of mineral deposits and will be of interest principally to those involved in the minerals industry and in academia.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Although it has long been recognized that what ultimately drives metamorphism and metamorphic reactions is heat, what was less certain is the distribution of heat within the crust, the type and location of major heat sources and the rates of heat flux through crustal rocks. This book explores the factors that control metamorphism and rates of metamorphic processes.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This book presents a series of review articles on nine important ancient orogens on Earth. Comparison of these mountain belts provides a wealth of information for the debate on whether there has been a change in mountain-building processes through the history of the Earth. As a precursor to these papers, the rheology of the Earth’s lithosphere through time is reviewed. Theoretical analysis and insight into the behaviour of the lithosphere of other planets constrain mechanical considerations of the Earth’s lithosphere. It is clear from these overviews that geodynamic concepts and modelling, and new techniques such as deep seismic profiling and geochronology are having a profound impact on orogenic studies. It is also clear that orogenesis must not be equated with the Wilson cycle, culminating in continent-continent collision. Subduction-related orogens and intraplate orogens are also significant.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Salt produces some of the most complex and beautiful deformation features on the Earth's surface, although few of these surface exposures have been examined in detail, as they are usually situated in remote hostile regions. However, salt diapirs have become a recent focus of attention because of their strategic importance in controlling hydrocarbon reserves, while their unique physical properties enable storage of hydrocarbons and toxic waste. The volume commences with analyses of outcrop, cave, mine and borehole information which add to our general understanding of internal diapir deformation patterns and overburden tectonics. Seismic imaging has also increased our knowledge of halokinesis, and several papers are presented on regional case studies. Numerical and physical modelling have provided a broader knowledge of geometry and processes. Such studies have led to new insights into what is physically possible. This volume draws on all these different approaches and should be a useful source of reference for both academic and industrial geologists.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The role and importance of structural geology in exploration and production of hydrocarbons is increasing with the tendency towards the development of smaller, more complex structural prospects and satellite fields. The availability of high-powered computer hardware and sophisticated software has facilitated a quantum leap in the accessibility of structural restoration, modelling and visualization techniques and made the rapid and accurate manipulation of large data sets possible. Many papers in this volume fully reflect use of this latest technology and demonstrate a broad range of capabilities. The book provides anyone wishing to undertake structural interpretation in complex areas with a comprehensive review of the latest techniques available. ... I certainly learned a great deal reading through it. Structural geologists working in or with industry will want a copy for their bookshelves. Basin Research, 9, 88-89. The volume is an excellent mixture of review and research papers that underscore the importance of multidisciplinary approaches to improve interpretations of complex structures. There is a good trade off between academic research and industrial applications, and I recommend this book as a library reference. AAPG Bulletin November 1997. ... I am certain that this Special Publication will be regarded as a valuable source of techniques for structural interpretation and validation of fault geometries. I can certainly recommend this volume as an essential, and indeed, a worthwhile purchase, for academic and industry structural geologists alike. Geological Magazine.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Permo-Triassic rifting in Northwest Europe was part of the tectonism which caused Pangaea to disintegrate virtually as soon as it had formed. This rifting, together with associated events elsewhere in Europe, controlled much of the predominantly terrestrial sedimentation which occurred as the continent moved from the equatorial rainbelt in Carboniferous times, through the trade wind desert zone in the Permian to somewhat less arid conditions in the Triassic. To what extent Permo-Triassic rifting influenced sedimentation in the petroleum provinces of the Central and Viking Grabens of the North Sea is still debated. Elsewhere on and around the present-day continental shelf of Northwest Europe the influence of the rifting on Permo-Triassic sedimentation is becoming clearer. The twelve chapters of this volume introduce and discuss the emerging evidence for the differing styles of Permo-Triassic rifting around Northwest Europe. A number go on to discuss how this rifting influenced sedimentation and how it related to igneous activity in some areas.
