Description / Table of Contents: Twenty-six species of podocopid ostracods are present in a high Antarctic fauna obtained from Halley Bay. Diagnoses are given of the two new genera Antarcticythere and Myrena, and the new species Cativella bensoni, Loxocythere frigida and Robertsonites antarcticus are described. Comparisons are made with other faunas described from the Antarctic. As in other high Antarctic faunas, the species Antarcticythere laevior, Myrena meridionalis, Cytheroppteron gaussi, Xestoleberis rigusa, Cativella bensoni, Robertsonites antarcticus and Australicythere polylyca are characteristic species. In Pseudocythere caudata, and southern forms which cannot be satisfactorily differentiated from this species, size is shown to increase with latitude. It is suggested that the distribution of this fauna is controlled by temperature in conjunction with the East Wind Drift, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Scotia Ride preventing its spread towards South America.

In: The geology of the South Orkney Islands
Description / Table of Contents: Signy Island has been mapped on a scale of 1 : 12,500. The island is composed of schists of almandine grade, representing regionally metamorphosed sediments now largely quartz-mica-schists with subordinate amphibolites and marbles. A three-fold succession has been established through about 2,500 ft. of strata. There is no evidence of igneous activity before or after metamorphism. The foliation and schistosity generally follow the bedding. A study of the macro-fabric indicates that the rocks are homo-axially folded with an almost north-south trend. Overfolds with a similar trend are visible on scales ranging from that of a hand specimen to that of a cliff face, but major fold nappes are not believed to be present. The fold direction is perpendicular to the trend of the Scotia Ridge and faults strike both north-south and east-west. The rocks of Signy Island are similar to those of nearby Coronation Island, and Elephant and Clarence Islands (South Shetland Islands).

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: A deep rotary core drilling project in 1957 at Site 2 on the Greenland ice sheet (76°59'N, 56°04'W provided ice core to a depth of 411 m. The vertical variation in bulk density, macroscopic structure, oxygen isotope ratios, ionic constituents, and extraterrestrial dust (black spherules) were analyzed using both field and laboratory techniques . These data permit the direct estimate of annual accumulation layers in the core. Continuous stratigraphic measurements and observations were made over the upper 110 m of the profile and detailed physical and chemical analyses were made on continuous lo 3 to 3.9-m core increments at 100, 200, 300 and 411-m depths. The average total ionic concentration in the ice sheet ranges between 0.65 and 1.35 mg/liter. The annual global mass deposit of black spherules as calculated from these studies varies from 2.10 x 10^5 metric tons in 700 year old ice to 6.57 x 10^5 metric tons in 12 year old firn. The oxygen isotope ratio variation provides the best means of estimating accumulation at depth. Results of the investigations indicate rates of net snow accumulation of 42.3, 34.2, 37.4, 41.1 and 41.6 g/cm^2 -yr at the surface, A.D. c. 1773, c. 1513, c. 1233 and c. 934 respectively. Accumulation data and other physical and chemical evidence allow climatological inferences to be made over the 10-century profile. The ice core record shows that snow accumulation and temperature in A. D. 934 were similar to today, followed by a gradual decrease in accumulation to a minimum around the late 18th century and an increase in both accumulation and temperature from A. D. 1773 to 1957 and following.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: Pendulum steering, a new concept of attitude stabilization for thermal probes or coring drills in ice, eliminates instability. The center of support is placed above the center of gravity. A lower and upper hot point produce melt penetration. The ratio of their power levels is the basis for stabilization, which is provided by the automatic control of the heater in the upper hot point. This feature makes possible a single thermal probe design that is suitable for all ice cap temperatures and a wide range of penetration rates (i.e., applied power levels). The simplicity of a thermal probe with pendulum steering suggests availability at modest cost and versatility as a widely applicable tool.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract: The report is divided into four parts: Parts I and II cover investigations of the reliability of shear stress measurements in soils subjected to vibratory loads for biaxial and triaxial systems, respectively. Part I is a summary only (see USA CRREL Technical Report 90 for detailed treatment). Part III is a study of three-dimensional "principal" stress patterns produced in soil subjected to vibratory loads. Part IV is a theoretical analysis of some aspects of soil wave propagation in stratified soil. From the measurements of five shear stresses and one normal stress, the stress distribution of a triaxial system can be determined. In noncohesive soils triaxial stress fields due to vibratory loads can be determined by recording six independent stress components. Sinusoidal force excitation and impact excitation yield time-distance graphs which can be used to determine reflection and refraction techniques in stratified soils.

Description / Table of Contents: In March 1966 at the Tuto ice tunnel, Greenland, a team from USA CRREL and the University of Bern tested a new down-borehole device which would allow gas to be extracted from within shallow or deep boreholes. The tunnel ice was unfractured and its temperature was constant at -10°C. A location where, in 1964, C-14 age dates had been obtained was used as a check point for the down-borehole tests. Comparative samples show good agreement and indicate a mean value of 5120 years B. P. for the age of ice at this location. The simplicity of the downborehole gas extraction system enables application of the carbon dating method to any natural, undisturbed glacier ice mass which can be sampled by boring. The gas extraction apparatus and field experiments are described.

Description / Table of Contents: Pavel Gordijenko hat sein Leben der Polarforschung gewidmet.

Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Translation of the abstract: The monograph is devoted to identifying the relationship in time and space of the Siberian Platform and the Sayan-Baikal fold system. The main attention is paid to the analysis of the structure and development of marginal platform structures of the first order, represented here by the marginal suture, Riphean mioreosynclines, Riphean volcanic belts, Lower Paleozoic foredeeps and post-Paleozoic foredeeps. It is shown that the Riphean miogeosynclines of Siberia and the edge troughs of the Angarolena type, together with the troughs of the Ural and Carpathian types, constitute a historical series of edge structures of platforms, reflecting the direction and stage of development of the Earth.
