Notizen: 1. Many studies have addressed either community models (e.g. Clementsian versus Gleasonian gradients) or assembly rules (e.g. nestedness, checkerboards) for higher plant and animal communities, but very few studies have examined different non-random distribution patterns simultaneously with the same data set. Even fewer studies have addressed generalities in the distribution patterns of unicellular organisms, such as diatoms.2. We studied non-randomness in the spatial distribution and community composition of stream diatoms. Our data consisted of diatom surveys from 47 boreal headwater streams and small rivers in northern Finland. Our analytical approaches included ordinations, cluster analysis, null model analyses, and associated randomisation tests.3. Stream diatom communities did not follow discrete Clementsian community types, where multiple species occur exclusively in a single community type. Rather, diatom species showed rather individualistic responses, leading to continuous Gleasonian variability in community composition.4. Although continuous variability was the dominating pattern in the data, diatoms also showed significant nestedness and less overlap in species distribution than expected by chance. However, these patterns were probably only secondary signals from species’ individualistic responses to the environment.5. Although unicellular organisms, such as diatoms, differ from multicellular organisms in several biological characteristics, they nevertheless appear to show largely similar non-random distribution patterns previously found for higher plants and metazoans.

Notizen: 1. The concepts of community assembly and succession are closely related, yet their foci differ slightly. Succession describes the trajectory of species replacements during the temporal development of the community, while assembly also allows that a locality can harbour different communities depending on the events in the near past of community development.2. The aims of this study were (i) to examine the year-to-year variation in phytoplankton community assembly among basins of different trophy and disturbance in the large boreal Lake Hiidenvesi and (ii) to assess community persistence and diversity among basins in relation to prevailing environmental factors.3. The results showed that the assembly did not follow similar trajectories each year. According to mean similarity analyses, there was a large degree of variability especially among the groups of samples collected in the same months of different years. Similarity between pairs of consecutive samples was highest in a cold year (1998) in all basins. Community assembly was most unpredictable in the basin of highest productivity, perhaps implying that the number of alternative stable states increased towards higher productivity. Our data also showed a strong unimodal relationship between phytoplankton species richness and grazing by cladoceran zooplankton in the basin of highest trophy.4. This study showed that phytoplankton community assembly exhibited large variability among the years. This implies that different environmental conditions might be the strongest mechanism behind this pattern, given that the degree of community similarity paralleled the year-to-year variation in mean temperature. Unravelling the patterns in community assembly has a number of important implications, especially for the monitoring of ecological impacts based only on snapshots of biological assemblages.

Notizen: Laboratory measurements of soil samples are necessary to assess the effect of mineralogy, grain size distribution, moisture content, and electrolyte composition on the resistivity spectrum of soil material. Laboratory results are also required for the interpretation of field data. Induced polarization phenomena in glacial soils are poorly understood and so far no convenient laboratory techniques are available for its measurement. Coarse grain size and the need to measure unsaturated samples and to monitor the homogeneity of the sample require a sample holder–electrode construction that differs from those presented in Clay mineral Studies. This study presents a spectral induced polarization laboratory system that is suitable for measuring fine- and coarse-grained and both saturated and unsaturated soil samples. The noise caused by the electrode–electrolyte interface is studied in detail. It is shown that easy-to-use platinum or acid-free steel potential electrodes are convenient over a broad frequency band ranging from 0.016Hz up to more than 1000 Hz. The laboratory experiments and comparisons between laboratory and field results also indicate that sampling and sample packing procedures have only a minor influence on the phase spectrum of glacial soils.

Notizen: Magnetic methods are used in detection of environmental, engineering and military objects fabricated of thin ferromagnetic sheets having volume susceptibilities higher than 100 SI units. Magnetic modelling of such objects would be advantageous, but it requires knowledge of the susceptibility and remanence values of sheet materials, which is scarce. We introduce a magnetometer method for the determination of susceptibility and remanence on thin steel samples. The area of the sample must be so large that its within-sheet magnetization remains below the saturation state. The measurements are made in normal office surroundings in the Earth's magnetic field with an ordinary fluxgate magnetometer. The square-shaped sheet samples measured in this work have an edge length of 17.5 cm and a thickness in the range 0.5–1.0 mm. During the measuring procedure the sample is placed in four positions on a subvertical measurement board. For each position, the magnetic field in the dip direction of the board plane is measured on the opposite sides of the sample. The secondary field values are averaged for each sample position in order to reduce the effect of sample inhomogeneities. With these data, the susceptibility and remanence of the sample in its edge directions are then determined, based on a model curve which is calculated numerically using thin-sheet integral equations. The susceptibilities measured for different steel types (cold rolled and hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheets) varied in the range 200–500 SI units, and the remanence varied in the range 1000–20 000 A/m. No systematic differences were observed between the magnetic properties of various steel types. The repeatability of the susceptibility measurements was good (variations 〈 5%) but the remanence could be changed by 50% between repeated determinations. The measured susceptibility range signifies that pieces of steel with a typical thickness of 0.5 mm remain below magnetic saturation when their edge dimension is larger than 5 cm. Therefore magnetic modelling of larger steel pieces must be made using the thin-sheet theory with known magnetic properties, whereas smaller saturated pieces can be alternatively modelled as an equipotential system.

Notizen: The X-ray intensities of almost-forbidden reflections 301 and 303 in a single crystal of magnesium have been measured at 293 K. Effective monochromatization by appropriate electronics was utilized to increase the observability of these weak reflections. The data are interpreted in terms of atomic vibrations by application of a quantum-statistical one-particle formalism that allows anharmonic contributions to the atomic temperature factor. A value of -0.43 (3) eV Å-3 is obtained for the third-order anharmonic parameter, the negative sign being deduced from the coordination. This outcome is in accordance with earlier results concerning anharmonic vibrations.
