In:  Supplement to: Zhang, Yi Ge; Ji, Jungfeng; Liu, Lianwen; Chen, Jun (2007): High resolution hematite and goethite records from ODP 1143, South China Sea: Co-evolution of monsoonal precipitation and El Niño over the past 600,000 years. Description: Precipitation has a larger variability than temperature in tropical monsoon regions, thus it is an important climate variable. However, reconstructions of long-term rainfall histories are scarce because of the lack of reliable proxies. Here we document that iron oxide minerals, specifically the ratio of hematite to goethite (Hm/Gt), is a reasonable precipitation proxy. Using diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry, we measured samples from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) 1143 drilling site (9°21.72'N, 113°17.11'E, 2777 m water depth) for hematite and goethite, whose formation processes are favored by opposing climate conditions. In order to determine the content of hematite and goethite we produced a set of calibration samples by removing the iron oxides to generate the natural matrix to which hematite and goethite in known percentages were added. From these calibration samples we developed a transfer function for determining hematite and goethite concentration from a sample's spectral reflectance. Applying this method to ODP 1143 sediments (top 34 m of a 510 m core with sampling interval of 10 cm) we were able to reconstruct a continuous precipitation history for SE Asia of the past 600 kyr using the Hm/Gt ratio as a proxy of the precipitation variability of Asian monsoon. The reliability of this Hm/Gt proxy is corroborated by its consistency with the stalagmite delta18O data from South China. Comparing long-term Hm/Gt records with the surface temperature gradient of equatorial Pacific Ocean, we found that monsoon precipitation and El Niño are correlated for the last 600 kyr. The development of El Niño-like conditions decreased SE Asia precipitation, whereas precipitation increases in response to La Niña intensification

Description: Two types of microvillar photoreceptors in the neural tube of amphioxus, an early chordate, sense light via melanopsin, the same photopigment as in “circadian” light detectors of higher vertebrates. Because in amphioxus melanopsin activates a Gq/phospholipase C cascade, like phototransduction in arthropods and mollusks, possible commonalities in the photoconductance were investigated. Unlike other microvillar photoreceptors, reversal of the photocurrent can only be attained upon replacement of extracellular Na+. In addition to Na+, Ca2+ is also permeant, as indicated by the fact that (a) in normal ionic conditions the photocurrent remains inward at Vm 〉 ENa; (b) in Na-free solution a small residual inward photocurrent persists at Vm near resting level, provided that Ca is present; and (c) Vrev exhibits a modest shift with [Ca]o manipulations. The unusual reversal is accounted for by an uncommonly low permeability of the light-dependent channels to K+, as [K]o only marginally affects the photocurrent amplitude and its reversal. Lanthanum and ruthenium red (RuR), two TRP channel antagonists, reversibly suppress the response to photostimulation of moderate intensity; therefore, the melanopsin-initiated cascade may recruit ion channels of the same family as those of rhabdomeric photoreceptors. With brighter lights, blockage declines, so that both La3+ and RuR induce a right shift in the sensitivity curve without a reduction of its asymptote. Nonetheless, an effect on the transduction cascade, rather than the channels, was ruled out on the basis of the voltage dependency of the blockade and the lack of effects of intracellular application of the same substances. The mechanisms of action of these antagonists thus entail a state-dependent blockade, with a higher affinity for the channel in the closed conformation. Collectively, the results indicate a kinship of the light-sensitive channels of amphioxus with those of invertebrate rhabdomeric visual cells and support the representation of this lineage of photoreceptors among chordates.

Notes: Self-pumped phase conjugate in trapezoid-cut Ce-doped KNa(Sr0.61Ba0.39)0.9Nb2O6 crystal was demonstrated without external reflection mirrors and applied field, phase conjugation reflectivities as high as 25% were measured. The threshold power was lower than 0.03 W/cm2. The device operated by one-region four-wave mixing using the photorefractive effect.

Notes: Nano-crystalline PbSnO3 was synthesized by a sol–gel route. It was an anion-deficient pyrochlore (a=b=c= 1.0677 nm) with space group Fd3m. TEM images confirmed the nano-size of particles as ∼10 nm, aggregated into larger clusters up to 1 μm. DSC-TGA investigation revealed that the PbSnO3 was unstable 〉800°C with 2.95% weight loss. The products of the reactions, Pb2SnO4 and SnO2, were identified by in situ high-temperature XRD. The complex decomposition reactions were deduced as (2 +x)PbSnO3= Pb2SnO4+ (1 +x)SnO2+xPbO (x= 0.104). The lattice parameters of PbSnO3 were determined by high-temperature XRD. The cell volume of PbSnO3 increased with increasing temperatures. The average volumetric thermal expansion of PbSnO3 was calculated as (β= 3.35 × 10−5/°C).

Notes: A novel method for the preparation of bonded and etch-back silicon-on-insulator is presented and demonstrated in which the surface of the to be thinned silicon wafer near the oxide is biased to inversion, so the bulk of this silicon wafer can be removed by anodic etching using the depletion layer as an etch stop. The high etching selectivity between the bulk silicon wafer and the depletion layer makes it possible to produce a micron/submicron-thick active silicon layer with good thickness uniformity across a 3 in. silicon-on-insulator wafer. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this letter, a new type of self-pumped phase conjugation (SPPC) is demonstrated and a phase conjugate reflectivity as high as 83.8% is measured in an unusually cut Fe-doped KTa1−xNbxO3 (KTN:Fe) crystal with a He-Ne laser. Some novel characteristics of this type of device are found, which may reduce the need for special crystal qualities to obtain SPPC. Finally, a possible mechanism is postulated to reasonably explain this type of SPPC. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nanodiamond powder was annealed at each of the following temperatures: 300, 600, 800, 1000, and 1150 °C, for an hour in flowing argon ambient. The variations of x-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra of the powder with different annealing temperatures were studied. While being annealed at temperatures higher than 800 °C, the powder can undergo a phase-transition process from cubic diamond to graphite. In addition, the size of nanodiamond crystallites decreased from ∼50 to ∼25 Å. The physical mechanism responsible for the variation in Raman spectra is discussed using a phonon-confinement model. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nonlinearity is observed in Fowler–Nordheim (FN) plots of field emission from nondoped and nitrogen-doped amorphous diamond films. Based on a unified electron emission equation a detailed analysis is carried out. The results from numerical calculation of the unified equation are consistent with the experimental data. It is shown that the nonlinearity in the FN plot originates from a transition from thermionic emission to field emission as the applied field increases. The electrical field ranges are derived in which the field emission and thermionic emission approximation applies. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
