Description: Environmental consequences of economic growth and development became an area of major national concern primarily in industrialized countries during the nineteen-sixties. Undesirable side-effects of development became highly visible in terms of air, water, land, and noise, pollution, and people in such countries became concerned with the continuing environmental degradation and impacts on their health and life-style. The emphasis, however, was primarily on the physical environment. Two problems received much attention: the constantly increasing resource-use in the developed countries, and population explosion in the less-developed countries. Many doomsday scenarios were put forward, and there was a clamour for ‘no-growth’ in the West. This created much apprehension in the less-developed countries, because development was urgently needed to improve the living-standards of their citizens. Thus, ‘pollution of poverty’ became an important issue at the UN Conference on the Human Environment, which was held at Stockholm in 1972.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, Poiseuille flow of a polar fluid (model of a red blood cell suspension) under various boundary conditions at the wall, viz., slip or no-slip in the axial velocity and couple stresses zero or non-zero at the boundary, is considered from the point of view of its applications to blood flow. Analytic expressions for axial and rotational velocities, flow rate, effective viscosity and stresses are obtained. The magnitudes of the length ratioL and the coupling number N are determined in accordance with concentration and tube radius (in the existing literature, values ofL andN are chosen arbitrarily). Velocity profiles (both axial and rotational) and the variation of the effective viscosity with concentration, tube radius and for various values of the boundary condition parameters are shown graphically. The analytic results obtained are compared with experimental results (for blood flow). It is found that they are in a reasonably good agreement. The effective viscosity exhibits the Inverse Fahraeus-Lindquist Effect in all the cases (including the slip or no-slip in the velocity fields). A method is given for determining the non-zero couple stress boundary condition for a given concentration. Applications of this theory to blood flow are briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of semicrystalline polymers are very much dependent on the molecular orientation. The orientation function to deal with the elastic moduli data of Hadley et al. (1969) are treated under new aspects. To determine the nature of orientation function from empirical data a relation of the form Sinθ=f (n) Sinθ′ is assumed to describe the change in the orientation angle of a unit from θ′ to θ for the draw ration. Birefringence experimental data are used to find the orientation functionf (n) which is then used to calculate elastic properties. The agreement of the experimental values ofE 0 andE 90 over the entire draw ratio range is found to be satisfactory for Nylon, low density polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate. This furnishes strong empirical evidence for the validity of the orientational model for the above substances.

Notes: Abstract The quantity-intensity (Q/I) relationships of labile K in soils of two long-term experiments receiving contrasting K fertilizer treatments were determined for surface and sub-surface soils. The Q/I curves were visually superimposable, their shape being unaffected by K treatment. Buffering capacity for K and quantity of K fertizer applied were negatively correlated.

Notes: Summary Decomposition studies with humic acids (HAs) present in HA-clay complexes revealed that such decomposition decreases at higher clay concentrations. At high clay concentration, moreover, it has also been observed that smaller and more flexible humic molecules are less susceptible to the said decomposition as compared to larger and more rigid structures.
