Notizen: We report measurements of photoluminescence decay time in a reverse biased GaAs/AlGaAs graded index separate confined heterostructure single quantum well (GRINSCH-SQW) laser, as a function of bias voltage at temperatures of 20, 70, and 150 K. For certain bias voltages and temperatures, we observe extremely fast escape times of optically generated carriers. We propose a simple model based on photogenerated electron recombination in the quantum well, and escape via direct tunneling out of the lower bound electronic level, thermally assisted tunneling out of the upper weakly bound state, or thermionic emission over the barrier. We have performed a theoretical calculation of each of these processes and show that the data agrees well with the direct and thermally assisted tunneling times and that the thermionic emission term underestimates the times.

Notizen: [Auszug] We studied seven normal fed adult men aged 22-65 yr and five boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, aged 12-1 Syr. Three of the patients were wheelchair bound and the two youngest were on the verge of becoming so. Investigations of these subjects using radioactive isotopes would not have been ...

Notizen: [Auszug] HART1 has referred to the potential uses of radar in geodesy and photogrammetry. The War Office has now granted permission to publish details of geodetic observations made in Italy by radar during May–June 1945. The general principle of these observations was that an aircraft, a ...

Notizen: Abstract. Mutations in the gene encoding extracellular glycoprotein fibrillin-1 (FBN1) cause Marfan syndrome (MFS) and other related connective tissue disorders. In this study, eight mutations have been detected in MFS patients by heteroduplex analysis. These comprise two missense mutations, C1835Y and C2258Y in calcium-binding epidermal growth factor-like domains, two nonsense mutations, R1541X and R2394X in transforming growth factor β1-binding protein-like domains, one splice site mutation, which has been detected previously, and three small insertions or deletions resulting in a frameshift. Fibroblast cells have been established from seven of the MFS patients and the biochemical effects of the mutations on fibrillin-1 synthesis and secretion assessed by pulse-chase analysis. Each cysteine mutation resulted in the delayed secretion of fibrillin-1 and both nonsense and frameshift mutations caused reduced levels of synthesis and/or deposition of fibrillin-1. Indirect immunofluorescence and rotary shadowing electron microscopy analysis of fibrillin microfibrils revealed no major differences between normal and patient samples. We discuss the relative merits of the biochemical techniques used in this study.

Notizen: Abstract We have used low temperature photoluminescence (PL) to study thin film CdTe/CdS solar cell structures. The devices were produced by close space sublimation (CSS) and have undergone a post-growth treatment, a vital step in increasing device efficiency. The treatment consisted of evaporating a thin layer of CdCl2 onto the back CdTe surface and heat treating in air at 400 °C for between 10 and 120 min. This produced a range of device efficiencies from 2% to 9%. The efficiency improvements are the result of a complex interaction between the CdCl2, impurities and sulfur interdiffusion. The structures were prepared for PL by a chemical bevel etching technique which allows the luminescence emission to be studied as a function of depth throughout the sample. The main features in the PL spectra have been identified as being due to the Cl-A center and the Te-dislocation-related Y luminescence band. Using PL we have quantified the S diffusion into the CdTe which has a maximum of 20% at the interface in the most efficient samples. We have also obtained the profiles of recombination and non-radiative recombination centers in the device. We observe correlations between impurity centers and device efficiency which can help explain the effects of the CdCl2 treatment on the optoelectronic properties of the CdTe/CdS junction.

Notizen: Increasingly widespread usage of stable isotope tracers to aid clinical diagnosis and support basic research has stemmed from both advances in mass spectrometry and the availability of competitively priced labelled compounds. Stable isotopes have been used generally to investigate normal and abnormal metabolic pathways, to estimate energy expenditure and body composition and to quantitate substrate flux and oxidation rates. Despite the fact that the underlying principles relating to the use of stable isotopes for in vivo studies are straightforward, careful consideration must be given to all aspects of human studies. This review highlights some of these, including choice of label and tracer molecule, mode of tracer administration and sampling site, analytical instrumentation, interpretation of data and ethical constraints.

Notizen: The methods used for the determination of the concentration and isotope enrichment of (1-13C)leucine and its metabolite (13C)α-ketoisocaproic acid (KIC) in plasma for the study of whole-body protein turnover are described. Leucine was analysed as its N-heptafluorobutyryl isobutyl ester and KIC as its quinoxalinol-TMS derivative, both by chemical ionization selected ion monitoring gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The sensitivity of the leucine assay was improved 30 times by monitoring the negative ions under the conditions described. The coefficient of variation for enrichment and concentration measurements were 0.5% and 2%, respectively, with a minimum detectable enrichment of 0.1at% excess for both assays.
