Notes: Studies the methods used to ensure that new product development inan industrial and technical environment is market led. Begins with thecustomer active paradigm of Eric Von Hippel, and then develops aproactive approach to new product development. Reports on a three-yearaction programme applied to a UK division of a multinationalcorporation. Although the study is concentrated on one in-depthlongitudinal example, the authors are confident that the results can beapplied more widely.

Notes: Intellectual capital creation is theorised in this conceptual paper as a dynamic process of collective knowing that is capable of being leveraged into market value. The tacit, intangible and socially unconscious nature of substantive parts of this dynamic process presents some daunting theoretical challenges. Adopting a broadly social constructionist epistemology and a pluralist ontology, the point of departure introduced here is the set of symmetric and reciprocal relations presupposed in Jürgen Habermas' theory of communicative action. In this worldview, interaction, as distinct from individual action, becomes the germ-cell or basic unit of theoretical analysis. The relations and validity claims built into the medium of communicative action, viewed here as the nexus of intellectual capital creation, are substantive and real phenomena; they are thus open to empirical investigation.

Notes: Reports that performance appraisal (PA) has become an important tool in "controlling" employees in modern public industries. Little work, however, has focused on its mediation or actual practice in relation to different groups, such as women and ethnic groups. Examines the changing nature of employee management under PA in relation to how it affects the role of women in organizations. Illustrates with research, gathered from a case study in the midlands. Moves analysis beyond the individual-collectivist tradition towards assessing the subtle control strategies now employed in the contemporary form of 1990s management. More specifically, illustrates the requirement for women to make the correct self-presentation as a means of "getting on" and, from a managerial stance, of subordinating them. The use of a hospital case study highlights some of these issues in relation to the changes taking place in the public service sector, which faces fundamental transformations to its concept of service. Concludes that PA has seriously affected the role of women in public health organizations and that PA has seriously failed to meet the needs of women.

Notes: Compares two approaches for designing production line cellular manufacturing systems, or "focused factories". Production line manufacturing cells are dedicated to producing a set of similar products with machines that are arranged in a serial production line within the cell. Approach A requires the processing of batches of products in only one manufacturing cell, while approach B allows batches of product to be split and made simultaneously in different cells. Both design approaches consist of three stages. The first stage determines the best part routings among alternate routings to minimize the operating cost. At the second stage, a specific number of cells is obtained by using an ART1 neural network-based cell formation module in approach A and a fuzzy rank order clustering (fuzzy ROC) module in approach B. At the third stage, production sequence is considered to find the best layout with lowest material handling cost. An example demonstrates that both approaches are effective in designing production line cellular manufacturing systems. Approach B gives a lower operating cost but a higher material handling cost than approach A. Both approaches should be analysed and compared, since the best approach depends on the operating and material handling costs for the application.

Notes: Four decades ago, Whyte (1956) described how a new human expression had become universally evident. This was the notion of the "Organisation Man", an early corporate culture characterised by the middle ranks of - male - managers in large organisations, who were subject to a "social ethic". Gender was not an issue. However, in a contemporary view of corporate culture, it has become crucial to understanding both notions of competitive advantage, and the thesis and influence of individual commitment to the organisation. This article deals with the issue of gender and the corporate culture thesis. Unlike many studies there is a need to make a distinction between women and men concerning their organisational perceptions and roles in relation to the corporate culture thesis. The paper is an initial analysis of research material, dealing with the above issues in relation to gender in contemporary organisations. It examines a changing notion of corporate culture to one where both men and women are implicated in the project at a full emotional level.

Notes: Multi-source (360-degree) feedback is a powerful new performance diagnostic tool, and organizations everywhere are evaluating whether to adopt it. However, the technology is evolving at a breathtaking pace, and regrettable consequences can follow if users are not knowledgeable and the tool is not used properly. Recognizes there are a number of potential problem areas, but focuses on the issues that usually have the biggest impact. The explanation of each issue will help managers get information, resolve issues, evaluate options, prepare carefully and increase the probability of success. Presents seven recommendations for successful use of 360-degree feedback.

Notes: There is a dearth of published research on the assessment of idea generation techniques. Helps to rectify this and examines idea generation techniques within the new product development process by an in-depth study of the measuring, checking and precision instruments industry (SIC 3710). Data were collected from 47 companies using telephone interviews. Over 80 per cent of manufacturing respondents claimed to use some form of idea generation technique in their new product development process for new product idea generation or problem solving purposes, with larger companies using more techniques than smaller ones. However, none of the companies' last new product was initiated by the use of an idea generation technique. It is therefore difficult to justify the resources that idea generation techniques presently consume. The origin of most new product ideas was the customer.

Notes: Looks at performance appraisal (PA), which has become an important tool in the overseeing of employees in contemporary society. Notes, however, that little work, has focused on its mediation or actual practice, beyond simple descriptions informing its implementation. First examines the changing nature of employee management under PA, before investigating the contemporary usage of PA regarding its emphasis on the issue of managing and controlling the "images" of performance. Illustrates this with research, gathered from a case study in the Midlands. More specifically, focuses on the requirement on individuals to present the right image/self-presentation as a means of subordination. Highlights, with the use of a hospital case study, some of these issues in relation to the changes taking place in the public service sector, which faces fundamental transformations to its concept of service. Concludes that, whatever the original intentions of PA were, they have seriously failed, and are superseded by the management of the subjectification of performance.

Notes: The essayist contends that American academia is rife with a "dog-eat-dog" version of Social Darwinism, or survival of the fittest through brutal competition. Offered as evidence are the training of too many students for limited career opportunities, prolongation of graduate training to provide professors with cheap assistants, conversion of 40 per cent of faculty to adjunct status, crushing student debt. Higher education is becoming a bloated, inefficient, non-innovative, and marginally productive process.
